Growth on Inside of Lower Mouth
08/10/2008: Kathelee from Montclair , NJ: "Hi, I searched your site but didn't find anything. I was hoping you may help. I have a growth on the inside of lower mouth that I have had before and there was nothing there, no disease or anything. It's grown back and I wondered if there is a way to get rid of it..it doesn't hurt and it s relatively small but it's annoying. I've tried garlic and cayenne (hurt)and tried 12% h202 left then on about 15 minutes but no real change. I hate to go have it removed as its close to $500. and it grows back Appreciate any feedback. Thank you."
08/16/2008: Joyce from Joelton, Tn replies: "To Kathelee from Montclair: A question Kathelee, I am assuming from your e-mail that you have had same type growth in same spot removed in the past, have you? If so, what was the pathologist report or were you told what sort of growth it was? Several things come to mind, the first one being have you thought of trying oil pulling since this is inside the mouth where putting any poultice type or ACV or H202 soaked cotton ball on it wouldn't likely stay put. If you were told it was a cystic type growth, google SSKI (potassium iodide) and pull up reference from Tahoma Clinic whose doctor advises that SSKI will rid you of cysts. Since most every reference in natural remedies seem to agree that alkaline conditions discourage many harmful things, you might try applying 1/8 tsp (or less depending on the size of this growth) of baking soda directly on that growth and letting it dissolve before rinsing it out 2 or 3 times a day to see if it helps. I have used this recently myself without harmful effects."
Gerd, Burning Mouth and Tongue
01/19/2008: A : "Ted: I have read the website along with so many other informative websites on GERD. I am 33 year old suffering from GERD from last two years. Last March my gall bladder was removed because it had stone. However there was no relief to my GERD symptoms. Since last two years I have been regularly taking either lansprazole, in between doctors have prescribed esomoprezole. I have experienced almost all the symptoms one usually has in GERD right from low level heartburn to extreme symptoms of continuous severe cough for weeks. I have lean body, check my diet a great deal and eat healthy sleep 4 hours after taking my last meal avoid sleeping or laying down during daytime. All in all I do almost everything what is prescribed, however from last few months I came across new and irritating symptom burning tongue and mouth, it started with acid taste in mouth when I used to get up in morning and then it used to remain throughout the day and slowly it took the shape of severe tongue and mouth burning. I consulted a doctor and he confirmed that it could be bcoz of GERD though did not make any tests. He changed my medicine from Lansoprazole 30 mg per day to Nexium 20 mg twice a day with Domperidon thrice before meals and advised vitamin B tablets for 15 days. I have been taking medicine from last more than 3 weeks and I feel a good 80% relief in burning sensation, Doctor has told me that I have to take this medicine for complete one month and only then he would advise me to go for Nissen fundoplication or not?
Please advice to me what I should do to lead a normal life and without going for a surgery? However if you think surgery is the best way to avoid any further complications in future please advice, of late I have also started experiencing itching on the skin around the mouth which comes and goes. At times I feel bitter fluid reflux itching in back of my throat. My tongue is usually covered with some white thick fluid.
I would be highly thankful if you advice me on future course of action to avoid any further complications and to lead a normal life. Thanks."
Ted from Bangkok, Thailand replies: "Dear Ash: The gall bladder's major function is to provide buffering of pH (usually acid), electrolytes and emulsification of fats. Whenever the gall bladder is remove the functions of those three are generally remove. Therefore an acid reflux such as GERD can be problematic. The cause of stones of gall bladder is commonly due to excess calcium and not enough magnesium in the food, as well as low level metabolic acidosis from eating too many acid forming foods (mostly white flour, bread, fried food, meats, etc.) and not enough alkaline forming foods such as vegetables. Once the gall bladder are removed, the problems of GERD may still exist despite active lifestyle. Therefore, prevention of gall stones, or reduction in gallstones through taking lemon and baking soda would have slowly reduce the stones as the citrates from the lemon has a tendency to dissolve the stones and excess blood calcium.
Most of the symptons are indeed relieved with the vitamin B complex, especially the thiamine B1 components since they indirectly control the pH through the controlling of the glucoses in the blood by normalizing them, hence helpful with the condition. However, the if the body does not have suficient bicarbonates, especially the potassium, than an acid mouth occurs. To get the mouth in an alkaline state is to balance the electrolytes. The best remedy, that is fairly safe is the 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda plus 1/4 teaspoon of potassium citrate, in 1/2 glass of water taken about twice a day. The potassium citrate has to be taken with the sodium to prevent the sodium and potassium imbalance. However, magnesium in my opinion is considered an electrolytes also, and I may add 250-500 mg of magnesium citrate taken only for 5 days out of a week. The B vitamin is still important. It takes about 3 weeks for the acid mouth to reduce in a severe case if taking the baking soda and potassium was continued, but most mild conditions the sour acid tastes of the mouth will go away within a day or two, whenever the sodium bicarbonate and potassium citrate were taken. A quick remedy, but not really resolving the real cause, but can relieve the symptoms is 1 teaspoon of baking soda in 1/2 glass of water used as a mouthwash whenever there is a problem about the acidic mouth. In most GERD symptoms I have found people with this has three common features:
1. Lack of bicarbonates and citrates 2.
B vitamin Deficiency
3. Amino acid imbalance.
The amino acid imbalance came because of improperly digested foods which will further worsen the GERD. Therefore, I would try to take some amino acid supplements. If an amino acid supplement cannot be found, a less effective, but acceptable whey protein might be of some help also. If the nutrition complete, I have observed the GERD usually goes away, but the ones I have experiencing here may be mild, and hence the conditions quite often goes into "remissions". Most layman prefer to say cure, but authorities don't like that word.
Therefore sodium bicarbonate, potassium citrate, magnesium citrate, vitamin B complex, and amino acid supplements are the major remedies for GERD, based on my experience."
09/05/2011: Rhonda from Butner, N.c. replies: "Hi, I had the problem for 30 years and it was total misery. I was diagnosed with severe acid reflux 30 years ago also, had all the painful things that comes with it also. Severe chest pain, choking on mucous sore and dry mouth the list goes on... I had nissenfundiplication surgery 2 years ago and I am much better, however there are still times that I have problems such as sore mouth and alot of mucous that makes me constantly clear my throat, I guess we have to take the good with bad.. Good Luck in making your decision hope all is well for you!!!! Rhonda"
Gerd, Burning Mouth and Tongue
01/19/2008: A : "Dear Ted, Thanks for your quick response. All advice including yours suggests that throughout life of GERD patient he needs to be on medicine and still the quality of life does not improve. In fact there are always additional irritating and inconvenient symptoms keeps on adding to patients life, under these circumstance what is your take on going for "NISSEN FUNDOPLICATION" so that once for all the root cause is addressed. I am aware that success result are less but there are chances of improvement, please advise...
Ted from Bangkok, Thailand replies: "It is usually done only as a last resort when other remedies do not work. Most people will try to find other remedies during those time which can be anywhere from a couple of months to several months, depending upon individual preferences. My experience here is there still is a GERD, bloating, acid mouth and other problems despite surgery. Maybe it comes only from people who reported me with the problems. Apparently the surgery completely deal with all the problems.
The official line is there is "less than 1% mortality rate", but my experience has been more. People experience 89% symptom free, but again that's the official line also. Surgery practices in different countries and success rates varies greatly from country to country.
One additional remedies that can be added to GERD whenever a gallbladder is removed is 1 tablespoon of granulated lecithin is taken along with the food to help digest the food where the gall bladder function of fat emulsification is missing."
Burning Mouth and Gluten Intolerance
12/29/2007: S from OKC, OK: "A f/u to my previous message..still was having burning mouth after eliminating wheat for 3-4 wks, diarrhea subsided to twice a day but mouth/underneath tongue and sometimes palate of mouth TENDER....had a live blood cell test done..have leaky gut syndrome and yeast in system...doc says it all goes together along w/gluten intolerance..tested high for mercury, doing oxidation/chelation treatments, done about nine...since my mouth still hurts I cant tell if I feel better or not..if that makes sense..Guess I am going to have to call UNCLE and go see a GI doc which I was trying not to do..Im 41 and have never been sick, so I am just beside myself that I cant nip this in the bud. Will keep you posted as I go as there seems to be no quick fix....lots of prayer.."
11/21/2007: S from OKC, OK replies: "I wrote a few months ago about burning mouth syndrome. recently just been diagnosed "wheat gluten intolerance" or Celiac Disease... I recommend anyone w/ these symptoms to get it checked out. A good website is www.celiaccenttral.org Symptoms are frequent diarrhea, weight loss, migraines, abdominal pain, gas, constipation... Symptoms are no different then everyday complaints that this is HARD to diagnosis... I would recommend cutting wheat out for 2 weeks and see if symptoms disappear..I took a stool test at www.enterolab.com. IT is $99.00 but definatley worth showing if you have an intolerance... my burning mouth has since dissipated...what happens is your body gets inflamed... and everybody symptoms are different..google celiac and read about it.. thanks"
12/31/2007: Ted from Bangkok, Thailand replies: "A burning mouth is a sign of metabolic acidosis. I had a case of gluten intolerance along with the usual yeast infection, but it disappeared entirely once the metabolic acidosis was dealt with and the gluten intolerance just disappeared, and this had happened in some of the worse people possible who also had a lupus. By the way, white bread are acid forming, so it might not be just gluten intolerance alone. Quite often the metabolic acidosis came from hidden hydrocarbons from aspartame (in supplements and drinks), carbon monoxide from poorly ventrilated water heaters, benzene (in colas), kerosine in heating system used in apartment (Canada used this), paint thinners, and especially methanol alcohol found in a lot of foods, which leads to this condition which resulted in acid mouth, or burning mouth, but what I got also was also burning urine. In one case here in Bangkok, the burning was so extreme it teared the tongue, but eventually the simple baking soda taken internally and used as a mouthwash in this teared tongue eventually resolved itself completely after the second week. I have not recently dealt directly with the issue of metabolic acidosis, but to eventually resolved this required that I have to recognized environmental problems from carbon monoxide from gas stove, paint thinners, inadvertant kerosine used (in insecticide), heaters, furnaces, and cars be observed. Aspartame additive did lead to burning mouth, but it also burned my kidneys. At one point my urine was so acid, its pH was about 4 which is almost equal to vinegar. I had one case of a painter with a fungus skin problem, from past use of thinner, which later lead to yeast infection throughout his body and eventually disappeared completely with just baking soda. But this also is not a complete remedy, but it did work. A more complete way of dealing with acid mouth required initially for the first one week 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda (later week to reduced to 1/4) plus 1/8 teaspoon of potassium citrate (later week reduced to 1/16), in 1/2 glass of water taken 2 times to up to 3 times a day, taken usually 5 days out of a week. Baking soda 1 tablespoon in 1/2 glass of water in 1% hydrogen peroxide were used only as a mouthwash after brushing of teeth. Some even used this several times a day to reduce the acidity of the mouth. Of course everyone's blood chemistry and pH is different, but the remedies mentioned is just my general observations for most cases. The exact dose can only be determined if people just measure the pH and achieve the proper pH, which should at least be about 7 or close to it, both urinary and salivary pH. The acidity of the mouth was effectively neutralized with the potassium citrate, but to prevent any disturbance of the normal extracellular fluids, the baking soda and potassium is always added. It is very important that baking soda is added to prevent such disturbances in normal electrolytes and pH buffer of the body systems. However it should be noted that both potassium and magnesium are the fluids inside the cells and hence some magnesium citrate I should also take, at the very least, 250 mg- 500 mg of magnesium citrate I took for only 5 days out of a week for a couple of weeks. Secondly, some three times a week vitamin B complex is taken about 3 times a week usually taken along with food. The ones I prefer is the vitamin B complex, B50, where B1 (thiamine mononitrate), B2, B3 (niacinamide), B5, B6, B8, Choline are often 50 mg, and the B12 and folic acid are about 50 mcg. Most of the metabolic acidosis should be under control with the thiamine mononitrate, but I prefer a more balanced B complex to prevent other vitamin B deficiencies. Finally to deal with certain toxic chemicals, such as trace methanol, and other things, I have after months of looking for the missing x factor that was missing from getting the body from being properly alkalized or more stable pH that the use of 10% solution of sodium thiosulfate (the 10% DOES NOT have to be exact, and can be anywhere from 5% to 20% concentration) since the amount I actually used were only in drops. I will add 10 drops of sodium thiosulfate solution in 1 liter of drinking water, or I can use 2-5 drops of this solution in every glass of water I drink. In some unusual cases, the use of sodium thiosulfate alone effectively stopped the burning mouth. The reason why that is so was that the sodium thiosulfate simply neutralized whatever toxic chemical that were burning the the mouth or led to metabolic acidosis. Most of these remedies are usually the bare minimum. In certain person with high toxin load, a small amount of sodium thiosulfate might lead to diarrhea or laxative effect. But interestingly this goes away after the 2-3 days once the toxin overload was reduced and the burning mouth, if it was caused by unknown toxin this alone may resolve it. Interestingly I have found metabolic acidosis (long term) lead to diabetes, high blood sugar, and kidney problems, but then so does getting colds easily too. Metabolic acidosis may lead to pneumonia after a bad flu that doesn't go away. Of course these are all my personal observations."
11/21/2007: Jaques from Brighton, England: "I am 58, have had a lifetime of stomach problems - now diagnosed with hiatal hernia/acid reflux, taking omeprazol, 40mg a day, main problem is always have loose stools and worst very sore eosophagus/throat, had biopsy on what looked like Barrets but negative. However, dont like taking pills, tried 2 tbls acv with 1/4 tsp bicarb soda in 1/2 glass water for 5 days lst thing and last thing at night on empty stomach - also did oil pulling - immediately on drinking the remedy my eosophagus/throat hurt even with bicarb added, my mouth which has burned, esp my tongue, for 10 yrs, became even more sore and the "runs" worsened. first I thought it would improve but I couldnt sleep at all, felt agitated and as I have very high BP which medication isnt helping, I decided to go back on the stomach pills. Having read peoples positive results I felt sure acv would help me with my stomach/BP and high cholestorol - I eat a very healthy diet, dont smoke, exercise, am slim, I really dont know what to do next or why this acv works for so many and makes me worse - if anyone has any ideas Id be grateful? Thank you."
12/10/2007: Amber from Royal Oak, MI replies: "11/21/07 Sharon from OKC wrote about her burning mouth and stomach problems and that she was diagnosed with Celiac disease.' Jaques from Brighton England wrote that he also has had a burning mouth for 10 years and have stomach problems. I think Jaques should get checked for Celiac disease since it can go undiagnosed for a long time."
Loss of Taste
11/06/2007: Cheryl from Jackson, NJ: "Dear Ted, my problem started about (1) week ago. All of a sudden I began to lose taste in my mouth, everything that I eat tastes like salt even when a place a piece of chocolate in my mouth. Since I can't taste anything I beginning to put too much salt or sugar in all of my cooking. As a result of this, I don't have an appetite because I know that everything that I eat will taste salty. Do you have any idea what this could be, I am very concerned and everyone that I talk to has never heard of an incident like this. I don't want it to go on too much longer but I thought that I would ask your opinion first before seeing a doctor. I look forward to your response. Thank you,"
Ted from Bangkok, Thailand replies: "Dear Cheryl: Doing by eating sugar/salt will only worsen the condition. Reduce your sugar concentration to reserve the body ridding itself of zinc and chromium. You appear to have a long term zinc deficiency. So to get well balanced, just take zinc citrate (or zinc acetate) 50 mg. for about a week, then stop. Then decide whether to do it further, if so do it on alternate weeks. Take magnesium chloride, or magnesium citrate or magnesium acetate would be fine. Then to further restore the taste buds, just take vitamin B complex, the 100 mg. kind, with B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, B8, except for B12 at 100 mcg. Since you are taking too much sugar, you need to restore the chromium also. Just take chromium chloride, or chromium supplements to restore that and top everything with several grams of brewer's yeast. Your taste should restore itself within the beginning of the second week."
Burning Mouth, Tinnitus, Crawling Sensations
10/13/2007: Elizabeth : "Hello Ted, I have found your advice to help heal thebody very interesting, and I would like to ask you for your guidance about three symptoms that I am experiencing.
1. A condition called burning mouth, the tongue and inner lips, roof of the mouth are very sore/ burning. the tongue has a white coating, no pain when chewing.2. Tinnitus in left ear. cause of tinnitus unknown, 3. Crawling sensation on scalp, outer ears, and side of face close to the ears, tops of cheeks, sometimes I can feel it stinging on top of my head. My scalp seems to be in good condition, although my hair has started to thin. I have consulted a chiropractor and osteopath unfortunately with no joy.My digestion seems to be okay no pain, no gas, no belching, no headaches. I eat a lot of fruit and vegetables. fish twice a week, no processed foods except oatmeal bread, no alcohol, no coffee, occasional tea. I drink 2-3 glasses of water a day plus I have started to drink a superfood it's a natural form of vitamins and minerals, mainly B vitamins, with zinc, iron, and iodine. Is bicarbonate of soda the same as the baking soda in your remedies?I would be very grateful if you had any suggestions as to how I could heal these conditions using your remedies.Thank you for your time. Elizabeth."
Ted from Bangkok, Thailand replies: "Dear Elizabeth:
The burning mouth usually is from acid mouthcondition, or acid tongue and is often the conditionof acidosis, with emphasis on potassium and magnesiumthat might be lacking. A simple remedy that I used isbaking soda 1 tablespoon in 1/2 glass of water to beused was a mouthwash. However, a much more appropriatepotassium bicarbonate and sodium bicarbonate, 50/50mixture such as 1/2 tablespoon of each in 1/2 glass ofwater is a more appropriate remedy to be used as amouthwash. This is followed by 1/4 teaspoon of bakingsoda and 1/4 teaspoon of potassium bicarbonate in 1/2glass of water taken twice a day to reduce theacidosis condition. Potassium bicarbonate seems tohave more beneficial effect in reducing the acidity ofthe mouth, but to be sure, I always make sure sodiumbicarbonate is not left out. A sodium bicarbonate orbaking soda is one and the same, but NOT the bakingpowder, which is very different, chemically speaking.Further more, I might consider taking magnesiumcitrate 250 mg/day for 5 days out of a week to correctthe pH from the citrate component, as well asrestoring the magnesium that might be lacking.
A common cause of tinnitus is ear infection, long terminfection of the ear, a magnesium deficiency, highheavy metals, fungus condition and acidosis.Appropriate remedy are treated based on the cause. Earinfection are treated using 1/4 teaspoon of bakingsoda, plus 3-6 drops of 3% Hydrogen peroxide in oneglass of water had been helpful with extreme tinnitusdue. The magnesium deficiency can lead to both ringingand sound sensitivity and the appropriate remedy is250 mg of magnesium citrate are taken 5 days out of aweek. A chlorella supplements once a day 5 days out ofa week would remove the heavy metals that isresponsible for sound sensitivity. In severe cases ofheavy metal toxicity, I have noted epileptic seizurecan also occur in some cases. As in home remedies, those can all be done at the same time or separately.Of course, I don't have that luxury of trying them allat once, since for me I had to discover what works, therefore I had to try them one by one which leads tolonger recovery times and suffering, but I get theadvantage of understanding what works and whatdoesn't.
Drinking 2-3 glass a day of water doesn't sound likemuch, since I drink plenty of water when I eat foodand I usually drink between 2-3 glass of water permeal, not counting the water I drink without mealswhenever I am thirsty. So this would amount to a about2.5 glasses of water x 3 meals a day = 7.5 glasses.Since I drink about 2 glasses not related to the meal, this would amount to 9.5 glasses. The standard is 8glass a day is thus easily achieved, even if I didn'treally keep tabs. A simple way is to observe how manyglasses are drank during a meal, which is 2.5 glassesplus 2 glasses not related to meal time. Hence, to dothat the standard 8 glass recommendation can beachieved. Mind you I live in a hot tropicalenvironment, but the water I drink during meal, regardless of the weather is often quite the same. Itis the water I drink not related to the meals thatvaries depending on the temperature and sweat. Hence,2.5 x 3 = 7.5 is the bare minimum I can achievedassuming the weather is cold and I drink no glasses ofwater not between meals.
I have mixed feelings about B complex, usually its theB6 Hydrochloride and the thiamine Hydochloride, whichare acid forming. Hence, AFTER I take B complex for acouple of hours, I will need to take some baking sodamore to neutralize the acidity of those. However, aneasier way I do it is just to take vitamin B complexocassionally, or take them separately each of the Bcomplex where I feel certain B's are needed more, suchas B2, B3, B5, B8 and B12.
Some people have a mistaken belief that you should notdrink water when eating food. This is a mistakebecause it alters and damages the blood serumseverely. This can easily be proven with the followingexperiment, if you have a clinic that provides forlive blood analysis under a dark field microscope.Eating foods with water versus eating food withoutwater. The blood platelets would invariable besticking to each other, almost resembling a bloodclot. If a blood clot were to actually occur, thiswould lead to paralysis (blood clot in the brain) orheart conditions (blood clots in the heartcapillaries). Hence, circulation is neverthelessclogged and people get less energized after eating.More energy actually should occur if appropriate waterwas taken and people don't stuff too much food whenthey eat. To eat unhealthy habits often leads to lackof energy AFTER eating. So this is one way of tellingwhether bad habits occur during eating.
A crawling sensation, whether it is an insect, or afungus problem, the use of borax as a shampoo is oftenan appropriate treatment. Borax is a gentle soap sogentle that it is used in eye wash preparation. What Imight do is to prepare a solution of borax, and norinsing leave it overnight and wash it the next day.The antifungal properties as well as anti-insecticidalproperties should get rid of the crawling. It is onlyin case of a confirmed insect problems that a boraxsaturated or oversaturated is added to the hydrogenperoxide 1% that is used for a stronger remedy."
Sources for Sodium Nitrate and Potassium Citrate?
09/27/2007: Rick : "Ted, Thank you for your quick response and kind help. It is greatly appreciated. I went to a couple of dr's early on and they gave me antibiotics for staph and one gave me pennicillin and the other gave me a couple of others. Nothing helped and a culture showed nothing as did a blood test. Where does one find such items as sodium citrate and pottassium citrate? I am taking Potassium pills and ester c and e and a and kelp, alfalfa, acidophulus, and a bunch of others. Tried extract of goldenseal but that seemed to make it worse. Also tried tee tree oil, oil of oregano and on and on and on....Whew! Not giving up the battle yet. Thanks again,"
Ted from Bangkok, Thailand replies: "First off I would get the urine and saliva pH to 7 first. Second the sodium citrate and potassium citrate can be made indirectly as follows:
2 tablespoon of lime juice (or whole lime squeezed) plus 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda.
The lemon has both the sodium citrate (from the citric acid) and the potassium citrate has some too. A direct making of sodium citrate can also be made as follows (not a perfect one, but the resulting pH seems reasonable) for biological parameters needed:
1/4 teaspoon of citric acid plus 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda in 1/2 glass of water.
The citric acid will react with the sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) to get sodium citrate. Potassium citrate may be available in potassium tablets, just read the labels. Most companies will make them from potassium chloride, some from potassium citrate and yet another from potassium bicarbonate. The ones I used is the potassium citrate and the potassium bicarbonate.
For healing to commence, aloe vera juice, vitamin C 1000 mg (rose hips or sodium ascorbate), and magnesium citrate 250 mg is needed."
White Coating, Burning, and Cravings
06/07/2007: M : "Dear Ted, I came across the earth clinic web site, that I have read with great Gusto!! Your replies have got me started in a healing Journey that NO AMOUNT of medical doctors could do. I recently had a baby who will be 5 months soon. During my pregnancy I started having this awful strong metallic taste (with a thick white coating) on my tongue. This taste eventually turned into what I was told is now called Burning Tongue syndrome. My sodium is border line low, and crave SALT and beer a lot.. I am not a drinker, so I found this beer craving very ODD for me. My calcium is also border line low, and looks like I may have low B6, but every thing else looks ok. Anyway after many docs I found a pretty OK ENT who actually listened too me, and he told me I had Acid reflux, even though I did even feel like I had this issue. He prescribed pepcid for me.. the nice thing was after 13 months of not being able too scrape off this white coating, I was finally able too scrape it off (after only one day of using pepcid), and my tongue is now 90% pink again. How ever this darn burning is still there. I do have Hashimoto Thyroiditis, and a compromised immune system. I found your ACV recipe and I have too say.. OMG.. this is awesome. I do the 2tblsp of ACV, ? tsp of baking soda, and 8 ounces of water. (twice daily). this totally takes away the burning I have been feeling in my tounge. However if I stop taking it, the burning returns along with the white coating. I have only been doing this 1.5 wks, but I was wondering.. does this sound Fungal too you? I love the results I get from the ACV recipe you speak about, but not too sure how long I should do this. I really do not believe that I have too LIVE with this issue. Can you please help educate me further on this issue.. Many, Many Thanks."
Ted from Bangkok, Thailand replies: "The burning tongue syndrome or the acid tongue was first coined by me (for lack of a better word) after one person who was taking too much acidic drink burned his tongue so badly it tore his tongue. The simple remedy at the time was just to keep up the baking soda mouthwash as often as possible and take at least 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda twice a day. It took 2 weeks for the tongue to disappear. However, a lifetime of alkalization is needed but not necessarily every day, if only you know that 90% of what you eat are acid forming food. It gets much worse when you have a baby because the baby's waste product happens to be acid too. I call this an acid overload, which not yet perfected fully, but it works with fairly great consistency with me for the last 25+ years since I was way back in the early 1970s after suffering a bout of pneumonia.
Now lactic acid buildup can also be responsible and the acetate form allows the body to rid of acid substance using the apple cider vinegar and baking soda. The body needs at least a baking soda, but it is more helpful if it is added the apple cider vinegar OR the lemon/lime juice formula.
I have further gone down in to efficiently getting the pH under control looking for other avenues, such as drinking green tea (no sugar, no fructose, no milk) to as both a mouthwash AND as a drink to kill certain fungus. But this is seen as supportive and it does stimulate salivary glandular function after taking 3 bottles (500cc) for only two days. It clears up the glandular functions that was clogged due to the tannic acid actions from the green tea. However other that works well is the pomegranate fruits, which is high in tannins can also help with the white tongue.
However, the mainstay is to try to take the apple cider vinegar or lime with baking soda to neutralize excess acid toxins that gets overloaded in the body. Toxin overload are controlled by both alkalinity and certain magnesium. But in case of a stomach upset you have mentioned, a magnesium chloride 1/2 teaspoon, with 2 drops of clove oil, and 4 drops of lavender oil, in 1/2 glass of water would have stopped that kind of stomach upset within 5 minutes. That's because it is a staphylococcus like bacteria, as well as the magnesium, lavender and clove are broad antibiotics, without the side effect. Taking a bath in zinc oxide can further relieve of toxins by removing hydrogen sulfide which is seen as toxin buildup in the body which quite possibly leads to a whitish, fungus like condition of the tongue also, with long term leading to inflammation, if the toxins were not neutralized in the meantime.
My sodium is border line low, and crave SALT and beer a lot.. I am not a drinker, so I found this beer craving very ODD for me. My calcium is also border line low, and looks like I may have low B6, but every thing else looks ok.
If your sodium is borderline, just take between 1/4 or 1/2 teaspoon of sea salt in 1 liter of water. It will normalize the body's electrolytes, pH, and micromineral imbalances all at once. The low calcium can be increased by alkalization, and vitamin b complex taken twice a week can help.
Beer craving can be reduced by taking brewer's yeast, they have selenium which may be causing the craving and this can be replaced without the need for beer."
Remedies for Acid Reflux and Sour/bitter Taste in Mouth
04/10/2007: Julie : "Ted, I have been researching the site Earth Clinic in regards to acid reflux and a sour/bitter taste in the mouth. I have a few questions, because I am not sure which remedy to take. Here is my situation. About 6 months ago I started to get a sour/bitter taste in my mouth all the time no matter what, it is always there. This started after being on 2 rounds of antibiotic and a week of prednisone for an ear infection which it turned out I did not have, it was my jaw. Anyway, ever since then I have been having this awful taste in my mouth. Been to a couple of different doctors and no one knows what it is. I was on nexium for a while too and that didn't help either. I didn't have any heartburn issues in the beginning, but I do now. I have the pain in the chest and constant burping. I don't know if the sour/bitter taste is related to the acid reflux or not, but I'm willing to try anything to get rid of it. I notice that the taste gets worse after I eat sugar, dairy or spicy foods, so that is why I think it might be related to the acid reflux. My question to you is which remedy should I take? The baking soda and ACV or the one that talks about the lemon juice and baking soda? I'm a bit confused. Please let me know which remedy you think would help me the most. Also, I am taking Protonix now, 40 mg in the morning and at night but doesn't seem to be doing anything yet.
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I am going on a cruise at the end of this month and would like to enjoy it if I can. Thank you."
Ted from Bangkok, Thailand replies: "Dear Julie: Antibiotics in general are not safe because they tend to encourage growth or cause some kind of fungus growth since antibiotics were created from growing these very same fungus. Those get in the body and tend to cause a fungus like symptoms. One easy way to tell is after a round of antibiotics, you get an "acid reflux". Fungus may create toxins in the body which inevitably create the well known acid tongue, which leads obviously to the metallic taste (bitter) and acid taste (sourness).
The approach to a remedy is simple, the body must somehow get rid of this fungus like organism that is causing them.
The remedy appears that is used most often, in case the body is really sensitive to anything acid is the baking soda remedy. The dose can vary depending on the person's sensitivity, but the most common dose is 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda in 1/2 glass of water taken twice a day, a larger dose is possible if the problem is bad enough, which is 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda twice a day.
If you want to know what is the most effective remedy and the proper dose for that, it appears to be 2 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar with 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda in 1/2 glass of water taken twice a day. My latest observation, appears to be that, a 2 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar with 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda in 1/2 glass of water appears to be more effective.
After taking, antibiotics they generally create a condition where the body is susceptible of fungus like toxins found in the body, and perhaps such growth, causing acid reflux and acid tongue. The body retains more heavy metals, and all of the antibiotics that I tested causes acidosis, which leads to acid urine.
If you have no problems about eating vegetables, particularly chinese parsley (coriander) those tend to cause the body to remove free heavy metals out of the body encouraging earlier death of the fungus like organism in the body.
It requires at least 2 weeks to notice improvement. In the meantime, use baking soda (and potassium bicarbonate if you can find them) and use this as a mouthwash. One example is 1 tablespoon of baking soda and/or potassium bicarbonate in 1/2 glass of water to be used as a mouthwash whenever the metallic (bitter) acid (sour) tongue condition exists.
The metallic (bitter) feeling of the tongue is that the body is trying to tell you that the body is overloaded with heavy metals. Both coriander and oil pulling helps in this respect. Oil pulling removes heavy metals when you swish your mouth in a good oil, such as (I tend to favor) olive oil as heavy metals are oil soluble.
The acid (sour) tongue tells you generally the body is overladed with excess acid.
One more additional way to tell you that these antibiotics have live fungus spore, obviously is when your conditions get worse upon eating sweets and ice cream. They tend to grow best and cause problems.
To further the kill, I have updated a newer remedy on the "baking soda only formula" to help kill the fungus issues caused by these antibiotics and other acid forming medicine (e.g. nexium which might cause acid reflux for people who never had them before by initiating series of acidosis) The formula for this one is 3 drops of 3% H2O2 in 1 glass of water plus 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda taken in the morning, and taken again in early afternoon, then once again before bedtime. Of course you may combine this with the other therapies, but the baking soda for Aplle cider vinegar should be reduced to 1/4 instead of 1/2 teaspoon.
Using h2o2 1% as a mouthwash whenever that problem of acid metal tongue also helps reduce the problem by directly killing them.
If the problem persist, a tiny pinch of borax, 1/16 teaspoon well dissolved in 1 glass of full water taken slowly can also help further the kill of the fungus like organism. I suspect it is the spores of bacteria/fungus from the antibiotics, or that the antibiotics now has become food to many micorganism."
Problem Regarding Postnasal Drip in Back of Throat and Lips Began to Itch
12/14/2006: Marie from Houston, TX: "Hi Ted, I have a question regarding some problems I have been having for the past few months. In August, I noticed that I was having a lot of postnasal drip in the back of my throat and my lips began to itch on occasion. I didn't pay much attention to it and thought I may be allergic to something in my lip gloss so I threw it away. Then I started getting a sore throat w/swollen uvula and a white coating on my tongue that lasted for several weeks. The first doctor thought I just had a virus and told me to gargle with warm salt water several times a day. This did not help me at all. For an unrelated problem, I was prescribed Bactrim and Metronidazole. After taking it for a few days, I broke out in hives all over and went back to the doctor. She said I was probably allergic to sulfur and discontinued the meds. She also prescribed me a corticosteroid to suppress the hives until they ran their course ( 6 or 7 days, I think). Since my throat was still hurting and irritated, she prescribed me Amoxicillin and did a rapid strep test thinking I may have strep. The rapid strep test and the culture came back negative, but I had already started the Amoxicllin. After one pill, I broke out in hives again and have never been allergic to Penicillin in the past. A few weeks later, I started having symptoms of acid reflux and could literally feel my stomach move and then tiny bubbles in the back of my throat a second later. As well, I started getting hiccups more often and had more indigestion. By this time, my throat was still hurting and my tongue was constantly coated, so I asked my doctor to prescribe meds for Thrush even though she said it didn't look like Thrush. To pacify me, she prescribed Nystatin Swish and Swallow as well as Diflucan. These two products gave me no relief and the tongue coating continued. Next I went to an ENT. He put the scope through my nose and into my throat. He said my sinuses and throat looked fine, but he did prescribe me Nexium. He also stated that he did not feel the tongue coating was thrush. Due to insurance stipulations, I tried Prilosec OTC for 2 weeks, Prevacid for a month and I am now on Aciphex. I don't get a sore throat as often, but I still have the constant coating on my tongue that is usually white, but sometimes yellow. The coating will not scrape or brush off my tongue. I tried the TheraBreath products, but they did not help. It's especially bad on days when I have to talk alot at work. I constantly have thick mucus in the back of my throat and have noticed a direct relationship between the thickness of the mucus and the thickness of the tongue coating. When the coating is really thick, my tongue swells a little toward the back and my teeth irritate the sides of it when I talk. As well, my lips and tongue will become itchy and irritated as if I am experiencing a food allergy even though I haven't eaten in hours. I think my whole digestive system is out of whack right now because I have rumblings and grumblings in my stomach as well as intestines/colon on a regular basis. At times, I also experience some anal itching (even when I have just finished taking a shower). I have always had acne-prone skin, but my acne is currently worse than it has been in years despite using Retin A and Minocycline. I have scheduled to see a GI doctor, but she can't see me until January. Right now the tongue coating is my biggest concern. I am so self-conscious about it at work and I talk to people all day long. I am open to trying almost anything to get my system back on track and appreciate any feedback you can offer regarding possible remedies for my condition"
Ted from Bangkok, Thailand replies: "Dear Marie: White coating on the tongue is not a virus, it is often a fungus like organism. Table Salt or common salt will not help as it encourages fungus growth. Sea salt often works better as it is alkaline forming.
Allergic reaction or hives to sulfa drugs and antibiotics in general means the body is depleted of B1 thiamine as is often the case as antibiotics reduces the body's vitamin reserves.
If this is taken, the allergic reaction is often stopped. However, I am a bit more careful and may take vitamin B complex. Molybdenum is another important one too that helps reduce both fungus and possibly allergic reaction. When the thiamine and molybdenum are reduced, it often encourages fungus growth, along with the fact that a large majority of antibiotics are acid forming, often lacking in left sided minerals seen on the periodic table.
Often just making a simple borax mouthwash that you do every 30 minutes for about 5 times should stopped most of the problems white tongue problem. But this is just a superficial treatment. If it works, adding a pinch of borax to drinking water should prevent most of the problems.
A few weeks later, I started having symptoms of acid reflux and could literally feel my stomach move and then tiny bubbles in the back of my throat a second later.
Acid reflux is quite common after a long long course on penicillin and other antibiotics. It seems to encourage fungus growth. These create fermentation of foods in stomach. On the other hand a vitamin B deficiency initiated by antibiotics lowers stomach acidity too, causing stomach fermentation. Which is a Catch-22 situation here. The easiest way to stop it is to stop fermentation, restore the vitamin B to the body. Vitamin B, especially B6 after meal or during meal can increase some acidity. Adding plenty of spices, especially thyme, oregano and rosemary along with your foods will reduce fermentation, stopping the acid reflux.
Alkalizing the body, restoring the immune system, will reduce the fungus buildup stopping the acid reflux. A simple remedy is lemon and baking soda, or acv and baking soda. See earthclinic's alkaline page please! White flour, white bread, cakes and all sweets encourages fungus growth and fermentation. Just avoid them and take other foods instead. Drink water with sea salt 1/4 teaspoon per liter of water will also restore alkalinity. But the use of common table salt will cause the body to be very acid, encouraging fungus growth again.
always had acne-prone skin, but my acne is currently worse than it has been
Acne is often a zinc deficiency, but frequently the wrong form of zinc won't help the acne conditions. Zinc acetate, zinc chloride, zinc citrate, or zinc gluconate are the ones I would use. 25 mg/day taken for only 5 days will restore most of the zinc deficiency and after on discretion maybe a weekly basis. A clear evidence is signs of oily face. Lack of zinc puts the sebum production on hyperactivity.
I also use a 1% - 5% zinc chloride solution as a mouthwash to stop the bad breath. However, there is a brand in U.S. that does have some zinc chloride, and it is Lavoris, not much but better than nothing. Before use, just add a teaspoon of borax to the mouthwash solution to help with the fungus issue.
There are many biological terrain issues that encourages fungus growth and it is beyond this email for me to explain them all. However, this should be more than enough to deal with your problems."
Person Suffering From Acid Reflux Resulting in Acid Taste and Heartburn
12/11/2006: Lisa from Wellington, New Zealand: "Hi Ted I thought I'd discovered a gold mine, when I discovered this website and have eagerly read most of questions/answers regarding reflux & the tongue. I have despaired in the hands of conventional medicine and would really appreciate if you would answer my questions. I suffer from reflux, resulting in an acid taste in my mouth plus occasional heartburn. Treatment with Antacid pills makes no difference. Daily Gaviscon after all meals for a week seems to assist with healing the oesophagus and eliminating heartburn. I took Losec for a year which prevented acid build up & heartburn. However for the entire year I suffered weeks of bad nausea, plus bouts of diarrhoea. I was then given antibiotics to treat suspected giardia (which gave no immediate result) and underwent further investigation - biopsies, gastroscopy of the stomach, scans of liver, spleen pancreas, gallbladder & kidneys. All testing results were normal. In order to undergo this testing I had to stop Losec and the nausea disappeared and the diarrhoea stopped. So I have concluded that the Losec was making me nauseous together with lack of acid to digest food thereby causing diarrhoea. After this performance I have decided to try the apple cider vinegar remedy. However I am a little weary as I use to take 1 tablespoon ACV in a little water twice a day but my throat felt raw, also I have highly reactive tongue. Approx 1-2 minutes after eating or drinking certain foods (kiwifruit, pickled onions, raw pineapple, chilli, tomato based products, cooked tomatoes or spinach?), certain liquids (vinegar, lemon juice) separately or in combination?? my tongue can become: - Swollen (making my speech slurred), puffy & burning. - Cracked ; cracks approx 2mm deep by 5mm long or chunks missing - Patches where the top layer of the tongue has been completely stripped, & hemmed with red raw edges & burning. Covering the tongue in white sugar alleviates the burning immediately, otherwise it takes approx 1 week for the patches to recover; and months for the cracks to close up, all provided I don't consume any further aggravating foods/liquids. I have now just started some steroid cream to hopefully assist healing the tongue. Also I am a habitual cheek biter & chew the inside of my mouth, intially due to stress & anxiety but now a continual habit. My pH, taken 4 times a day over 4 days averages approx 6.7 for the urine & 6.6 for the tongue. My blood results are normal, good B12 & folate. I take 2 multivitams plus 2 iron (due to being a vegetarian) pills a week, together with acidophilus pills after every meal. Plus daily St John's wort for depression. After taking various courses of antibiotics I have been careful to then take supplements to re-establish the enzymes in the gut and mouth/throat. Following your former advice I was going to take the following:
1. For 2 weeks take ¼ teaspoon of baking soda plus juice of ½ a lemon (which seem to be double the size of a small lime) in ½ cup water, once in the morning on an empty stomach & once before bed.
2. Then add 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar to the above remedy and take as per the above. Do this for 1 week on and then 1 week off.
3. Take a B complex vitamin pill, once a day for a month. Is the above treatment correct and is there anything else required? Do I need to take the apple cider vinegar remedy through a straw to avoid passing over the tongue or will the baking soda neutralize any damaging effect to the tongue? I assume the apple cider vinegar remedy is a health tonic that can be consumed indefinitely, or is there a specific period I should take it for? Do I need to a mouth wash as well? How should this be prepared & how long should I take. Thank you so much for your time and advice. Lisa, from New Zealand"
Ted from Bangkok, Thailand replies: "Dear Lisa, I would use baking soda as a mouthwash and take baking soda 1/4 teaspoon three times a day with 1/2 glass of water on an empty stomach. This will raise the bicarbonates. Your swollen tongue appears to be that your mouth is a bit too acid since normally a saliva should exceed pH 7.0 It takes about 2 weeks to get your body to normalize the bicarbonate level it needs. To further normalize your electrolytes lemon with baking soda until there is no more fizz. It is necessary that bread, white flour, pastries are common acid forming food. Soy milk may help as it is more alkaline forming than ordinary milk."
Having Strange Taste in Back of Throat
11/28/2006: Christine from Cleveland, OH: "Hello - I have been having a strange taste in the back of my throat and sometimes tongue - my GP says it is acid reflux but I do not want to take prescription meds. (have never had a problem before with heartburn or other digestive issues.) I am 3 months postpartum, breastfeeding, and having some anxiety issues as well. Will the baking soda remedy (1/2 tsp, twice a day fore 2 weeks) be the only action necessary? I am generally a very healthy, 34 year old, who exercises regularly. Your help is so greatly appreciated."
Ted from Bangkok, Thailand replies: "Dear Christine: Just baking soda alone will not work as well.
Having an acid reflux is a side effect of something deeper going inside your body's complex chemistry.
For example eating too fast, getting too stuffed, eating too much of an oily food, for example can also contribute to acid reflux.
Sometimes having too much acid or too little acid in the stomach is a problem. Sometimes it is not having much bicarbonates in the intestines create problem.
In low stomach acid, this can also create acid reflux by fermentation in the stomach, this happens more often than people realize. Fermentation can be reduced after you eat food, you immediately add to the food before you finished spices of thyme, clove, or oregano. Then followed by some non sugared, apple cider vinegar, apple juice, grape juice, or pomegranate juice. In China, they take strong tea after every meal. In Italy they take baking soda. In one peculiar one, taking B6 (pyridoxine HCl) right after meal can also increase stomach acid.
In Bangkok at least, all the cases of acid reflux I have experienced were a very mild case of anorexia which was bought to a complete stop with one single dose either one or more of the following: magnesium chloride, vitamin B5, vitamin B6, vitamin B complex, and of course fresh frozen royal jelly.
Toxic buildup in the stomach can also cause acid reflux and for me taking peppermint oil mixed in water can reduce some toxicity.
In case of parasites, such as helicobacter pylori, streptococcus aureus, etc. that might be present can also caused it, bought about from hospital reinfection, endoscopy, food contamination etc. In these unique case, you may have to change the way you cook your food. Simply switch to either using sunflower oil and/or coconut oil, since they can kill these organisms. The active components that kill these organisms are monolaurin (lauric acid) found in coconut oil, and oleic acid and linoleic acid found in sunflower oil seems to help. I would much prefer that vegetable oils in general (except for coconut oil as it can withstand higher heat better) be cooked using lower temperatures, but enough to kill the bacteria."
Ideas for Frequent Headaches and Metal Taste in Mouth
11/07/2006: Tracey from Mesquite, TX: "I take Toprol to slightly lower my heartrate, Norivam for anxiety and occasionally Prevacid for acid reflux and a small esophageal ulcer. I was recently told to start taking Zocor to lower cholesterol but am leary about more meds. Will the acv method interfere with the current meds that I am taking? I am also waking up many mornings feeling very stiff and achy. I have noticed frequent headaches in the last month and a metal taste in my mouth but my doctors have not been able to attribute it to anything specific. Any ideas?"
Ted from Bangkok, Thailand replies: "Dear Tracey: Taking ACV is like a food, so usually it will not interfere. Taking too many doctors' meds can cause this. However, this can be helped by taking about 1000 mg of sodium ascorbate vitamin C and vitamin B complex, where B1, B2, B3, B5, B6 are about 100 mg, except for B12 at 100 mcg. Taking 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda with 1/2 glass of water and 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda before bedtime, you body should be mostly restored the next day.
in the last month and a metal taste in my mouth but my doctors have not been able to attribute it to anything specific
When the body is full of bugs (bacteria, fungus), especially if your body is acid, they tend to create free radical metals and hence, the metallic tastes. A simple way to remove that is add 1 tablespoon of sunflower oil plus 1 drop of peppermint oil to detoxify and do oil pulling, to remove the heavy metals and toxins out of the body. Also it important to keep taking baking soda for about 2 weeks to increase the alkalinity thus killing the bugs. Once the bugs are killed, the acid reflux will be gone. Taking some zinc acetate and do briefly (3 day) iodine painting on the feet 3 square inches, will also help with your acid reflux condition by raising your immune system."
Terrible Taste in Mouth
11/06/2006: Joanne from Hartland, WI: "I have a terrible taste in my mouth. It tastes like a dirty dishrag. I was to the dentist and the doctor and they cannot find any thing wrong. I have had it for 5 weeks now. I need help. I do not feel like eating or drinking anything and am becoming nauseated from the taste. Help me."
Ted from Bangkok, Thailand replies: "Dear Joanne: The dirty dish rag tastes in the mouth is either a imbalances in mineral, electrolytes, pH imbalance, or excess free radical heavy metal or any combination of it. So the best way is just to get all your body's chemical imbalances to normal.
If you can get a heavy metal tester, check your urine first. Certain heavy metals will check for presences of free radical heavy metals. Here in Thailand, more than 90% of all people are tested positive for heavy metals, either copper, zinc, or mercury and cadmium. While EDTA is quite effective in copper, zinc and lead, it does have some limitations in handling the much heavier mercury and cadmium. Assuming you don't want to buy or can't buy these tester, then just eat some fresh chinese parsley. These should help reduce the heavy metals anyway and it won't cost that much.
Correcting the imbalances body's pH and oxidation reduction potential can be done with one formula, one whole freshly squeezed lemon, add water to 1/2 glass, then keep adding baking soda at 1/4 teaspoon interval until it the reacted solution tastes like water or until the fizz is no longer apparent. This simple formula will correct both the bicarbonate deficiency, pH imbalances, and the body's antioxidant levels all at the same time. It will also correct somewhat imbalances in electrolyte as well.
Just to make sure the electrolytes are balanced, then just take some sports drink, only one per day is more than enough.
Fulvic acid should help balance out the mineral imbalance. Again if you can't find it, then try something really simple. Get sea salt. Just add 1/4 teaspoon of sea salt per liter of drinking water. Sea salt contains traces of mineral anyway.
My experience has been that lack of appetite is often a vitamin B complex deficiency. Taken at 100 mg. of B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, B8 and 100 mcg. of B12, for example, taken only once a day should do the trick.
Since I am getting increasingly conservative, my rule of thumb is if you get better after taking vitamin B complex, then you should discontinue taking them. Just take enough, but don't overdo it. In most cases the appetite should restore, if not then take some multivitamin and mineral to give the extra push. These are just the basics. "
Constant Acid in Mouth
11/05/2006: Roberta from Key West, FL: "I am having constant acid. I find that my acid does not occur in the throat area but instead (unforunately) during bowel movements. I do have a constant bad taste in my mouth and have been told by the Doctors that they felt it was GERD. Nobody can seem to answer for me why the acid is soooooo bad in the stool area and how to fix this problem. The Doctors have perscribed to me Nexium, Prilosec, Protonix and they all give me a terrible headache after two days of taking them. I have changed my whole eating plan to a Akaline Food Plan and still have no relief. I am starting to worry because this happens on a daily basis and has been going on over 6 months. Please Help!"
Ted from Bangkok, Thailand replies: "Dear Roberta; To be sure, just measure your urinary pH and your saliva pH to confirm that you are acid. Whenever your intestines appear to be overly acid, this means the body's electrolytes imbalance is bad enough that it is throwing out acid.
If the saliva is also acid, then it obvious for the bad taste. The bacteria tends to grow well in an acid medium.
Assuming you have an acid condition, you need to take a freshly squeezed lemon juice and add at 1/4 teaspoon interval baking soda until the fizz stop, then add water.
This should help the body neutralized some acid and give the body the needed phosphates, vitamin C and citrates and some bicarbonates to neutralized some bad taste in your mouth. Citrates is known to be a weak form of antibiotic and kills off the germs.
The other problem about acid is the issue of sugar and starches which you should avoid and fried food. Just eat bake, boiled, or grilled fish and some vegetables. Take some chlorophyll supplements should help detoxify something. Often an acid stool is when the body's might have some toxic buildup in the guts due to uncontrollable flora imbalance. Therefore avoid starchy, carbohydrate rich food and milk. Take some soy will help since they don't seem to disturb the intestinal flora negatively as a milk does, especially if you have lactose intolerance. The manganese in the soy should also provide the body with the antioxidants in the form of manganese superoxide dismutase, which is good and should reduce the bad mouth taste.
Therefore, taking some yogurt, might help restore this condition too. Most bad breath can also be due to a zinc deficiency and the body cannot fight off the bacteria. So taking some zinc acetate and some sodium molybdate, can both kill of the bacteria through the actions of zinc and molybdate to restore the body's pH and yet provide the copper zinc balance the body needs.
Of course yours may be unusual because from most people with an acid condition, constipation rules, but in your case there is no mention. A leaky gut syndrome is a possibility and therefore magnesium will help. Depending upon your condition of the intestines whether they are diarrhea or constipation is critical to my understanding. For example diarrhea, I will know that you have a lot of bacteria that the body cannot handle. In that case reducing this and reduce the bacteria through the use of bentonite clay taken or activated charcoal could help. But if it was one of constipation, the a sea salt 1 teaspoon plus 1 teaspoon baking soda should solve the constipation and clearing out your intestinal area.
Finally do not eat a heavy meal in the evening. Eat only light foods, such as salads or fruit drinks or something that will not disturb your intestinal tract while you sleep. That way the body will not be logged up with undigested foods. Eat slowly and chew a lot. This should help restore and reduce undigested food responsible for your unhealthy intestinal problems. If you can find it, take plenty of fulvic acid and the intestinal floral should normalized within a couple of days."
Swollen Lips, Tongue ,have Burning Sore Tongue and Lips
10/24/2006: Cynthia from Nashville, TN: "I have swollen lips, tongue, have burning sore tongue and lips. Lips cracked at creases of mouth, lips peeling. I have been having this problem since 8/22/06. It is becoming unbearable, especially at night, feel like I have alot of acid in mouth. I have a problem with salivary stone in gland under tongue. Could this be causing problem or is it acid reflux? I have been to a Surgeon that wants to surgically remove stone and possibly gland. He states mouth problems not related to salivary stone, but sounds like an allergy. After reading your comments I feel like it is acid mouth, not allergy. Stopped eating fresh tomatoes and taking supplements. I have a problem taking pills feel like I have a narrow passage way in throat. Pills sometime get stuck and choke me."
Ted from Bangkok, Thailand replies: "Cynthia: Long term acidity, too much calcium and too little magnesium often leads to high circulation of blood calcium as the body desperately seek to alkalize the body this way.
To reduce the high blood calcium you need to alkalize or give the body sufficient bicarbonates so that this will reduce. However once the stones are form it is quite difficult to remove by just normalizing it. Removal is one way, but to remove the glands along with it is in my opinion an extreme. If the stones are not large enough, normalizing it by taking bicarbonates will very slowly dissolve the stone.
It is however important to measure salivary pH and urinary pH to really determine if your body is too high in phosphates or too low in bicarbonates. If salivary pH is over 7.5, it means you have too high in phosphates. But it urinary pH is below 6, it means your bicarbonates is depleted. Long term depletion bicarbonates or excess phosphates will create stones.
If not enough bicarbonates, than taking a minimum of 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda plus 1/2 glass water before bedtime and 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda in the morning will help restore urinary pH. If this dose is too low, then you try to increase your dosage accordingly to reach that pH. If your salivary pH is also acidic, then it will be below pH 6.5, then phosphates is below normal. If salivary pH is over 7.5 then it is excess phosphates. Assuming you have acidic salivary pH, then taking only 1/8 teaspoon of disodium phosphate only once a day and 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda twice a day minimum should restore it to normal. Adjust your dose accordingly all of them are just minimum dose. You are very likely to use much more.
A much simpler way is just to take one whole freshly squeezed lemon, which will have potassium, vitamin C, citric acid, and some phosphate anyway. All you have to do is take it twice a day, but add water to 1/2 glass, and keep adding baking soda at 1/4 teaspoon intervals until the fizz reduces. The lemon should taste almost like water. The stones therefore will no longer get bigger and will very slowly get smaller, if it is tiny, but large stones will take very long time to do it.
Finally you need to consider taking magnesium supplements which is antagonistic to calcium. I remember reading some water heater where there is calcium deposits buildup and they use powerful magnets, preferably North magnets, to slowly dissolve it. So perhaps getting some very powerful magnets might help also. Taking some disodium EDTA supplements might also help dissolve stones. Of course those path often depends on your doctor's advice anyway. Generally, I am a bit pessimistic on really dissolving large stones in such a short period.
There is some medical device that uses ultrasound to breakup stones in the kidney, but I am not sure if that is applicable in your situation, you just have to ask your doctor for that. "
Combinations of Many Symptoms
10/16/2006: Diane from Somerset, England: "I found your site in desperation after all conventional methods for my problems had failed. I am oil pulling as I do this because I need to ask some questions. I have had problems for 5 months. They started with a bladder/urinary tract infection for which I was given antibiotics. Them I had all sorts of problems. Cyctitis, thrush, sore and swollen vagina, very bad wind and belching, lots of intertinal pain, fizzing in bladder/intestines, sore feeling around my anus (but no redness), blood in my urine. I had a kidney scan which showed nothing but I had a lot of back pain, blood tests which nere negative (against what I'm not sure). I went to another clinic after my doctor said I had nothing and they said I had BV and severe thrush for which I was treated. I had a couple of weeks free of anything then things started up again. I had rumblings down below againand my neck and shoulder started to hurt again (they hurt from the start). My tongue and lips tingled from the start too and they got worse and the roof of my mouth tingled too. My tongue they went yellow and thickly coated. My left arm started to go numb, like opins and needles, and sometimes my legs would go too. At this moment in time my neck and left shoulder hurt all the time. My throat is sore and I feel like I have something stuck in my throat all the time. My sides hurt and so does my back and my left arm is continually tingling. My vagina tingles and my bottom is feeling sore (again with no signs). My tongue is still coated despite some oral gel I was given by the doctor. I have also had some more antibiotics (the sixth lot since this started I think). I have tried oil pulling, acv and bicarbonate of soda but I am not sure how much and whereas your site has so much info on it. Can Ted, or anyone, help me. No one seems to have seen my combination of symptoms and the doctors I have seen are less than helpful, one told me it was all in my mind and gave me antidepressants and one told me my time was up and to leave her surgery. Can you help me to make sense of what I have? Thank You."
Ted from Bangkok, Thailand replies: "Dear Diane: It seems you have a simple case of the fungus/mycoplasma issue. Methods of detection currently in used are extremely primitive, but the symptoms are all there.
Since your conditions started after taking antibiotics, it is a well known fact that antibiotics cause heavy metal retention in the kidneys. The major food sources of most fungus/mycoplasma is indeed the heavy metals, which starts a major chain reaction of thrush and other things. The best way out given your situation is obviously to lower your heavy metals by oral EDTA chelation.
However, my methods are somewhat different based on my own tests, the most effective means of delivery is to put in about 1/4 teaspoon of disodium EDTA to the drinking water and drink this as "normal water" throughout the day.
The second issue is to find a way to treat the fungus, by raising the immune system. So taking zinc acetate 50 mg/day, manganese 50 mg/day (do not exceed over one month), and sodium molybdate (take it until conditions are gone but not over one month) at 25 mg/day. Those short lists should solve the yeast issues.
Urinary tract infection can amazingly enough be easily be cured without antibiotics. Just take heaping teaspoonful of sea salt to one full glass of water. One dose is all you will ever need. I have discovered this after suffering for months of urinary tract infection and through painful trial and error, the obvious was overlooked. Therefore on somedays when you are not taking your EDTA, just add 1/4 teaspoon of sea salt to all your drinking water. Most water in UK is both fluoridated and chlorinated, so these two have a deadly combinations of suppressing the immune systems. To diminish this problem, just add 1/8 teaspoon of borax to detox the fluoride, and 10 drops of 10% sodium thiosulfate solution to neutralize the chlorine in 1 liter of drinking water.
As to that strange yellow thick coat in your tongue, I once had that too. Just prepare a 1% zinc chloride solution and use this as a mouthwash. It's the fungus causing it. Since antibiotics tend to destroy the vitamin B complex in your body, just take them to help with the numbing conditions. Get a good brand, the ones where the most Bs have 50 or 100 mg."
08/06/2009: Rhonda from Lakewood, Ca replies: "I have suffered many of the same issues and am interested in your solutions. The problem is, where to get edta chelation and many of the ingredients mentioned. Thank you."
Bicarbonate Taste in Mouth and Dry Burning Skin
10/13/2006: Janet from Philadelphia: "Hi Ted, I wanted to thank you for your feedback. Back in July I wrote an email but didn't realize you so kindly answered it. I do think that I have a scarcity of electrolytes. My blood sodium was rather low in my last blood test. I STILL have a kind of bicarbonate taste in my mouth and rather dry burning skin. But I am currently working on the electrolyte issue. I also think that unmetabolized supplements may account for some of the strange skin sensations. I didn't succeed with Magnesium and B6 although they are probably needed. I am also currently trying a rather new product for me, Green Magma. I can let you know how it is affecting my system. It seems rather sound in that it has organic minerals, much easier to assimilate, I presume."
Ted from Bangkok, Thailand replies: "Dear Janet: It is quite common for people have an electrolyte imbalance. Most common imbalances are sodium, potassium, magnesium, phosphates, and bicarbonates, while calcium often is too much.
The second issue is pH. Sometimes litmus paper can help measure this problem, your urine pH should be around 6.5-7.3 It seems like your salivary pH is way over 7.5 since you mention of "bicarbonate" saliva. Often when pH saliva is over 7.5 it means your body have excess phosphates. Sodium is often antagonistic to phosphate and increase in this MIGHT reduce phosphate. The only way to be sure is to see if the saliva pH is reduced. However the easiest way is to stay away from phosphate rich foods. Sometimes supplements put too much phosphates as "fillers".
The third issue is mineral imbalances. Yes, organic minerals will help. Also try adding 1/4 teaspoon of sea salt per liter of water too. It will just help balance it too, since sea salt do contain traces of mineral. Just to give you some idea why sea salt can be important in some ways is go here: http://oceanplasma.org/English/frames.html
Try getting some Oral Rehydration packs, while not complete as it contains sodium, potassium and glucose, it does balance the sodium/potassium issue. They are usually sold in drug stores and most pharmacists should help you."
Acid Reflux Sapping Minerals?
09/28/2006: Linda from Barnesville, OH: "please help I have acid reflex and i've been on Nexium for a long time and I have low potassium and magnesium and they won't stay up. If I stop taking Nexium, my mouth will burn and acid comes up in my mouth, and I so sick, but i think the Nexium is taking my potassium and magnesium out of my body. please help Linda"
Ted from Bangkok, Thailand replies: "This depends on how it was consumed. Magnesium can be best absorbed in powdered form and not tablet form because they won't dissolve in your stomach. The preferred form is magnesium citrate powdered, or magnesium chloride powdered, where you mix in water and drink it. As for potassium. The body will be best absorbed if you take a powdered form of potassium citrate, or perhaps take some electrolyte salt packs they sell in drug store, commonly called oral hydration. They will often formulate using either potassium citrate or potassium chloride. I prefer the potassium citrate since it tends to regulate the body's pH. Usually the drugs, will cause the body to rid of potassium, which is true and it may also be why the body can't hold up the potassium and magnesium.
As a result, you may have to take more of it, not take less. The average dose for potassium is 250 mg and magnesium is 250 mg. Just slowly increase the dose where it does hold so you can discontinue whatever that is causing the lost of potassium and magnesium. Most diuretics tend to cause the body to loose much more and as a result you still have to compensate the loss."
Husband Suffering From Acid Reflux
09/28/2006: Myra from PA: "Hi Ted, My husband has had acid reflux problem for several years and recently he says he has a cold and dripping feeling in his upper right abdomen and a weird bitter taste in his mouth. He is taking Nexium and Mylanta currently. Could it have something to do with his electrolyte imbalance? Also in summertime he needs tremendous amount of iced tea otherwise he get splitting headaches and would sweat like crazy in the middle of the night. He says he needs the sugar and the caffeine. We tried Gatorade, Pedialyte, honey with salt water but iced tea seems to help the most. We try to help him lose weight but with the amount of sugar in the iced tea, it is hard. Please advise. Thanks!"
Ted from Bangkok, Thailand replies: "Myra: Iced tea is high in tannins and is commonly an antioxidant. My guess is to try taking either ascorbic acid vitamin C or sodium ascorbate, in the amount of 1000 mg./day twice a day. Since I have no way of knowing his urinary pH, my best guess is to try the vitamin c ascorbic acid first, which might resolve the weird bitter taste in his mouth. However, to be on the safe side, it is best taken with half and half, which means ascorbic acid and sodium ascorbate taken ltogether. I haven't seen any vitamin C formulations done that way, but I do know that you can buy them separately and taken together. The vitamin C should put his body to antioxidation level, but I have no way of knowing either his urinary sugar, ORP, or pH. However, if this suggestion is right most or all of his headache should be gone the next day."
Arm and Hammer
09/15/2006: Nancy from Houston, TX: "I bought regular baking soda. the branch is arm & hammer. I notice yesterday taht it has 150 mg of Sodium. am i using the right one? The sodium its not to much? thank you The website is wonderful"
Ted from Bangkok, Thailand replies: "Nancy: Arm & Hammer are generally o.k. If you worry about sodium, tnen take some potassium supplemnts to balance out the excess sodium. Potassium bicarbonate are relatively hard to find for most consumer, but you should find it easier to get potassium supplements from the drug store easier."
Suggestions for Acid Taste and Burning Mouth
09/15/2006: Deborah from Brooklyn, NY: "The first time I went to the doctor I was diagnosed with gastritis. He gave me nexium. That was about 5 year ago. I haven't felt any releif with the medication. my symptoms are at time bloating, gas, stomache etc. I really don't get alot of heartburn but I always have a an acid taste in my mouth. I have all day and I also wake up with the acid in my mouth also burning in the tongue. any suggestions."
Ted from Bangkok, Thailand replies: "Deborah: Yes. Take 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda twice a day for at least two weeks. Add a pinch of potassium citrate or potassium bicarbonate, if you can find it! Most of the acid taste should disappear. It is important to try to use baking soda as a mouthwash to neutralized whatever acids left in your mouth at least 3-4 times a day."
06/12/2013: Pam from Geneva, NY replies: "So you DRINK this baking soda: 1/4 tsp in 1/2 glass of water 2x's a day? Or do you use it like a mouthwash and spit it out?"
Excessive Acid in Mouth
09/15/2006: Susan from NY, NY: "I was first diagnosed with gastritis 5 years ago due to taking motring for a long period of time. I have all the common symptom like bloating, gas, regurgitation, bile reflux etc. Like 2 years after I was diagnosed I have been suffering from excessive acid in my mouth day and night. I don't know what to do it is very uncomfortable I have to be eating tums all day because of the sour tast in my mouth and tongue. any suggestions. Please help desperate."
Ted from Bangkok, Thailand replies: "Dear Susan: Nexium isn't going to help you that much. You need to solve the cause. The acid taste is excess acid buildup in your body. Take 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda plus 1/2 glass of water twice a day, once in the morning and once in the evening. Continue to do this for 2 weeks before you noticed an improvement. Always try to add a pinch of potassium citrate, or potassium bicarbonate if you can find it. Apple cider sometimes helps too, but just stick to the baking soda first. Certain supplements seem to control pH, such as molybdenum and certain foods such as watermelon. People who are acid forming, need to avoid acid forming food like milk, bread, and sugar."
Any Suggestions for Throat Pain
09/15/2006: Marc from MI: "Much like an above question- I've been suffering from mysterious sore throat for last 2 years, but never actual heartburn. ENT prescribed PPIs for acid reflux. I did ph-24 showed signs of acid reflux. I've done all the diet/habit changes and Nexim 1 then2 a day for months did nothing. Will any of these ACV or baking soda things work for me....(possible LPR not GERD patient....or are these cures just for heartburn related issues? if not ACV etc...what can I use for this throat pain, any suggesstions. Thank you"
Ted from Bangkok, Thailand replies: "Dear Marc: There are several causes of acid reflux, which of course time doesn't permit me to explain them. But baking soda obviously will buffer any acid problems you are having and when you do take it, the body will store these baking soda in the form of bicarbonate buffers to prevent acid buildup form occuring. ACV is used for acid reflux usually to remove or detoxify the body to repair itself against acid reflux as well as certain elements of alkaline forming ACV to reduce the acid problems.
Taking some molybdenum supplements might also help as molybdenum tends to control pH through indirect control of sugar. Manganese may also help too. Excess free radical from fried foods, vegetable oils may also cause acid reflux, so avoiding sugars and oils will help. If pathogen is at issue, zinc, selenium and brewer's yeast supplements will help. Pathogens for some reason seem to cause acid reflux in certain cases, so building body's immune system might help."
Rash on Upper Body
08/22/2006: E : "Today, while exercising in a thunderstorm I developed an intense rash on my upper body. It was itchy and looked like a Niacin Flush, but worse! Prior to exercise, I had taken Niacin and I have been having an acid taste in my mouth, and the boric acid I take causes a major "belch". (I wrote you previously, so this is a P.S. but the rash was pretty unbelievable!)."
Ted from Bangkok, Thailand replies: "Never use boric acid and niacin together. Taking boric acid and niacin together will cause an unbelievable flush. They are synergistics in ways that are very unfavorable to you. I make a general rule never to use boric acid in most remedies, but to use either sodium perborate or borax.
The best approach is to use sodium borate (borax) and niacinamide. I prefer to use niacinamide instead of niacin. If you insist on using niacin, then take aspirin 3 minutes before taking niacin. It will stop the flush. "
How Will ACV Help When It Is Acidic
08/06/2006: Margaret from New Zealand: "After 4yrs of medication for severe reflux I am trying natural remedies! Tried ACV to no effect and now trying the bicarbonate of soda remedy. My question is: how do I know that I am producing too much acid or not enough? If I am producing too much how will ACV help when it is acidic? My main symptoms are: burning throat, very sore right ear, occasional bloating, sensation of blocked throat and sometimes food/acid coming up into back of throat. I avoid all acidic foods and have severly restricted my diet but my symptoms have not disappeared in the four years since symptoms appeared. I am feeling very miserable as it feels that I will never eat normally again! I am already too thin! Please HELP!"
Ted from Bangkok, Thailand replies: "Margaret: Treating yourself via natural therapies are in fact rather easy but arduous in what I would call by process of elmination, but more by trying different supplements then just diet restrictions. Usually diet restrictions applies only for the obvious ones such as sugar, fried food, microwave foods, bakery products, etc.
Most diagnosis today is still just guess work as it is symptom-based, rather than cause-base.
An acid reflux could be any number of problems. Most problems I have seen is the baking soda issue, usually taken for about a week, the second issue is the potassium issue (taken along with it or later on) such as potassium citrate. Going down the lists if bicarbonate doesn't work for you is taking the obvious supplements in the following order, magnesium, zinc, copper, boron, molybdenum for example on the minerals.
Then there is the pathogen issue (helicobacter pylori), where a simple dietary intake of fulvic acid and humic acid mixed in a suitable dechlorinator of sodium thiosulfate would do. The sodium thiosulfate somehow kills this pathogen too, which is why it is usually added. Also for some reason or another, the fulvic/humic acid would relieve most of the acid reflux issue when pathogen is suspect. And yes, I have had great success using fulvic/humic acid in treating helicobacter pylori for ulcers and certain acid reflux, if you are wondering.
Getting your electrolyte status balanced is important, and most likely the "macro" electrolyte are usually the obvious target, such as sodium bicarbonate, followed closely by sea salt and magnesium. The micro components might be related, but I haven't had to go that far and cannot recommend them as you will have difficulty finding them anyway.
Finally, recent research have indicated abnormalities physical esophogeal or related functions. There are reports that surgery does improve acid reflux, but I am thinking along the lines of using at least 4 i.u. of Vitamin E to improve the muscular digestion process and sensitivity by taking vitamin B complex for at least a week. The dose is important for B complex, usually most of the vitamin Bs for each one must have at least 1-2 mg, for B1, B2, B3(niacinamide), etc. Exception is B12, which is only 1 micrograms. If you have difficulty swallowing usually a simple vitamin E can really help.
Vitamin B5 and B6 deserves special mention as this is rather high also IN Royal Jelly (a bee product). I have had my own mother with an acid reflux that just CANNOT digest any food for three days in a row and magnesium and others simply won't work.
In an emergency, I got my royal jelly I bought sometime ago in the freezer and gave her a heaping teaspoon for FRESH frozen royal jelly. Within minutes her three day acid reflux spree was completely reduced. So happy with the result, two hours later I got one more teaspoon of royal jelly and she was completely cured. It never came back.
The acid reflux, at least for my own mother that did not respond to any KNOWN natural therapies was caused by an unknown pathogen/allergy trigger when she ate a suki seafood at a well known restaurant here in Thailand several years back.
I suspect it was also caused by some kind of chemical toxins they used as preservative as I also was sick, but did not get a severe acid reflux problems and the restaurant was well known by hearsay evidence anyway that they use chemical toxins such as formalin to keep seafood fresh. In fact this is a well known issue here.
If formalin or chemical poison is at issue, usually a simple ammonia smelling salts will do, or ammonia chloride solution applied to the skin to be absorbed intradermally (safest route).
Ammonia is a common antidote for formaldehyde, but most poisoning centers don't know that. It must be understood that the knowledge based for antidotes in poisoning centers at present are totally inadequate worldwide and you must do your homework yourself. I challenge you just to find a simple antidote of formaldehyde or fluoride or dioxin and you will have great difficulty finding it. Therefore, I have taken some pains trying to post some this information everywhere on the internet, but still, I have very little impact.
Of course, sodium thiosulfate is also a common antidote for many unknown chemical poisons also, including lavender oil, sodium bicarbonate and vinegar should be in all medicine chests when such Unknown poisoning does occur. Most emergency antidote from poisoning centers and even military used are laughably inadequate. We just simply can no longer rely on the big brother to treat us for everything!"
Baking Soda and ACV
08/06/2006: Jennifer from Milwaukee, WI: "I have been reading your site with great interest - especially in regards to ACV. I have gone through everything, but I am still a bit confused regarding the whole adding baking soda to the ACV. What I have been doing is mixing 2 tsp. ACV with 1 tsp. honey in 8oz of water. I noticed yesterday that my tongue feels mildly "burned" - like when you have eaten something too hot. If I am reading your website correctly, if I am having a "burned tongue" sensation, that means I should be adding 1 - 2 tsp. of baking soda to the mixture and that after a week or so, the burning sensation should stop. Am I reading this correctly? I am terribly sorry if you have been asked this too many times before, but the sheer volume of information regarding AVC on your site has me a bit confused on this subject. Thank you for any help you can give me!"
Ted from Bangkok, Thailand replies: "Dear Jennifer: Your condition is commonly referred to as the "Acid Tongue". The acid tongue has to do with the problem of your body's imbalances of electrolytes and buffers generally. A long term acidosis could also be a problem of biotin deficiency.
If this DOES happen, your body's buffer is seriously depleted. I have seen this quite often amongst body builders and certain exercise enthusiasts who take high protein supplements.
There are two steps to deal with this fairly common condition:
1. Raise your level of buffer first. Just take baking soda 1/4 teaspoon to 1/2 glass of water x 3 times a day on an empty stomach for about 2 weeks to get it to normal levels. The tongue should be no longer acid on the first week. On the second week, the level of buffer is optimum. Adding a pinch of potassium citrate or potassium might help also. It will balance intercellular and intracellular buffer and acid conditions.
2. Treat your burning tongue by keeping enough sodium bicarbonates solution in the mouth long enough to neutralize the excess acid the body is building up. Do it often enough during the first week and your tongue should be normal by the first week.
3. Consider long term treatment for your acidosis problem by taking some vitamin B complex plus 5-1 mg. of biotin per day for at least a week or so. Just remember that one possible cause for acidosis is biotin deficiency. There are others, but I refrain from putting too much information so I won't confuse you.
On your third or fourth week you can take ACV plus baking soda if you want.
Once you are treated, then you can take on ACV plus baking soda. Pure ACV, might deplete your body's buffer stores too quickly.
For purist, you can take ACV alone, and then take baking soda at separate times. It is your choice. The point is to have enough of the body's buffer and alkaline reserves at a sufficient level. "
ACV and Honey Didnt Work
07/01/2006: Janet from Philadelphia: "Yesterday I made apple cider vinegar and honey in the morning, hoping I would feel better during the day but it seemingly didn't work. I have had chronic digestion problems for so many years I can't even count and tried so many things. I woke up yesterday with a strong taste of bicarbonate in my mouth as I have also today with a kind of mild burning skin irritation and eyes as well.
I suspect that I have a kind of compensatory alkalosis for a rather extreme acid condition but this is only conjecture. My cholesterol is also very high so I wonder if the unprocessed fatty acids are causing the problem, or even unmetabolized vitamins that I have been wont to take, hoping THEY would help as well. Anyway, thoughts or feedback would be appreciated."
Ted from Bangkok, Thailand replies: "Dear Janet: You seem to have a severe form of electrolytic imbalance. Electrolytes occur in form of salts (sodium, calcium, potassium, chloride, magnesium, phosphorus and bicarbonate) and you can get laboratory studies of the blood serum and see which of your electrolytes you have imbalance.
Where I live, I cannot afford such services, so I prepare my own electrolyte solution which often includes magnesium chloride, potassium chloride, sodium bicarbonate, calcium chloride and a small amounts of potassium phosphate. The formula is usually based on a Ringer's Solution scientist used to keep tissue alive in Petri dishes, for example.
The other possible issue could be oil imbalance, usually evening primrose and fish oil will help. The possible vitamin deficiency is perhaps vitamin B complex.
Alkalosis is usually due to electrolyte imbalance and you should find the answer when doing a blood serum tests. My wild guess appears to be a chloride deficiency whenever an alkalosis exists since most chloride are rather acidic."
NEXIUM DOESN'T FULLY RELIEVE PAIN
05/22/2006: "THE NEXIUM IS HELPING SOME, BUT NOT ENOUGH. IT TOOK AWAY MOST OF THE PAIN ON MY TONGUE, BUT THERE'S STILL A PART ON MY TONGUE THAT LOOKS LIKE A PIECE OF SKIN HAS BEEN RIPPED RAW, AND I JUST DONT KNOW WHAT TO DO ABOUT THE PAIN.IT HURTS SO BADLY THAT SOMETIMES I JUST WANT TO CRY. COULD SOMEONE PLEASE TELL ME WHAT TO DO WITH THIS SITUATION . I JUST CAN'T KEEP GOING ON WITH THE PAIN ANY LONGER. THANKS."
Ted from Bangkok, Thailand replies: "Yes Nexium doesn't necessary solve the cause. Your description of acid reflux which causes the tongue to be ripped appears clearly that your body has severe electrolyte imbalance and buffer deficiency. This is caused by the body's excess production of nitric oxide, which by the way is an effective way to get your tongue in such a s shape. The best way to deal with this problem is to take plenty of magnesium supplements (you can try magnesium chloride, or magnesium gluconate) and take some potassium (either try potassium chloride or potassium citrate). I personally much prefer magnesium citrate and potassium citrate in case the body's production of nitric oxide becomes excessive. Sports drinks do have some potassium, or electrolyte salts, read the labels, will have potassium citrate there, and this is one simple solution. Potassium bicarbonate, if you can find one will help as a support to magnesium.
However, I do have people with your conditions and found that magnesium, and potassium, in both citrate and bicarbonates to be most helpful, especially in dire emergencies as yours. One simple way to reduce that burning tongue is to rinse your mouth with some buffer solution. Try doing it with sodium bicarbonate and do it as often as you feel it is working. That helped a lot to, based on feedback. However, someone with a serious imbalance like you, might possibly use potassium bicarbonate as a mouth rinse to neutralized the excess nitric oxide (which is really nitric acid) in your tongue!
Just remember: mouthwash with potassium bicarbonate or sodium bicarbonate to neutralize the acid buildup in your mouth first. Then supplement with magnesium and potassium for a couple of days should help your recovery."
Metallic Taste in Mouth and Burning on Tongue
05/19/2006: Pat from Cambridge Ohio: "I am experiencing a metallic taste in my mouth and a burning on my tongue. I tried the 1/2 tsp of baking soda in 8 oz of distilled water upon rising and at bedtime. I have been doing this for 1 week. The metallic taste is gone but now I have a sour, poison-like taste and the burning still exists. Testing saliva with ph strips measures about 6.-6.2 now. I cut back on baking soda to once per day due to tingling lips. Am I doing something wrong since this is not working well? Should I be taking Vitamin C or something else? My doctor told me to eliminate tomatoes for one month. I really don't have heartburn or stomach problems. Please respond. Thanks."
Ted from Bangkok, Thailand replies: "There are two possibilities, first the sodium bicarbonate is not pure. Get a good quality baking soda (the purest ones you can find), I got mine from a drug store grade or USP grade is o.k.
The second is your body is still very acidic. I have this case before, and continued taking of baking soda for about 3-4 days the problems should disappear. Apparently your saliva is extremely acid the body is very depleted of bicarbonates. Lowering dosages helps for the body to tolerate it better. My guess is you get sick very easily, have allergies all the time or have skin problems. In this case you need to take some chitosan and some zinc supplements such as zinc acetate. It takes about a month for your general health to return and about 2-3 weeks for the bicarbonates in your body to be normal. If the conditions get worse on continued bicarbonate, which is unlikely. Then simply do it on alternate days and see what happens."
Night-time Acid Reflux
04/26/2006: Mike : "I have suffered slightly from acid reflux at night over the years, had a very bad session New Years day this year. Went to doctor, he prescribed prilosec. Had 2 bad sessions in the next week, 1 during the day, undigested food sitting in the back of my throat. In desperation, I went out on the net and found the Apple Cider Vinegar & honey cure. I tried it and everything seemed to be going well, plus losing weight, etc. I still sleep through the night with no acid surprises, but I am experiencing an acid taste in my throat and mouth during the day, kind-of like a vapor. Also, the front area of my tongue, just behind the tip, feels burned most of the time. ACV & or honey will momentarily reduce the symptoms, but they come back fairly soon. Any suggestions?"
Ted from Bangkok, Thailand replies: "Yes I have seen this condition before, the extreme burning of the tongue until it becomes red and swollen. Your body's condition is extremely acidic. In this case, (or generally) ideally 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda at least twice per day for at least 1 week but ideally for 2 weeks. Most people I would generally recommend 1/4 teaspoon twice per day, but whenever serious depletion is apparent, then the dosages go up twice more. Please mix this in about 1/2 glass of water. Another formula which is a variation, is to take 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda plus 1/2 teaspoon of citric acid. This newer formula works better in restoring or maintaining steady pH much longer. However, for people whose bicarbonates are seriously depleted I won't recommend this second formula. However you are free to try out and see how it works for you in case the first formula do not work.
The body's buffer condition is seriously depleted whenever apple cider doesn't work. How apple cider works is this: the apple cider enters your system and encounters excess carbonates or calcium, which is common for most people to react to form either acetates or bicarbonates. However, in some people who do not have buffers already (carbonates) there is no buffer and the body's goes into an acid condition. In this case the body's stores of bicarbonates are depleted. There is a lot of misunderstandings of ACV that I would like to clear up, but limited time on my part, I can only answer the most common problems people have experienced. At the moment you need to refrain from taking ACV for about two weeks before continuing. If and when you should continue, after two weeks,: 1/2 teaspoon of sodium bicarbonate plus apple cider vinegar. In this instances allow the fizzing to settle down before taking them. You can add water if you want. The acid tongue condition should be cleared up within a couple of days (usually 2-3 days)."
Curing Acid Reflux, Got Mouth Acid
Nancy from Augusta, GA: "Dear Ted. I know you have many emails but I don't know what to do next. Have acid reflux- was able to control it somewhat before with licorice) and probiotics. Had a bad flare up last fall -stress - started enzymes with HCL since my food just seems to ferment in stomach. Also started ACV for the terrible heartburn =wish I had know about baking soda - had no clue it was the vinegar since it helped the heartburn so much. I started getting burning in mouth and tongue -- I have had it for 4 month. finally found you site after many doctors, scope, etc. I started baking soda 2X a day 1/4 tsp. for about 3 weeks. Finally got potassium citrate to add to it on 2nd week. Helped some but I still have burning tongue and mouth. Four days ago I added back the ACV with baking soda l tbsp. ACV and 1/8 tsp. soda 2x day - take morning and night. Use the enzymes at noon and with evening meal (and DGL) Take ACV plus baking soda before bed.Really helps the nightime hearburn but still have the buring in mouth and tongue. I am so tired of doctors but need some relief. Should I try the lemon, go back to baking soda and water (doctor told me to stop because ph was 7.5. When I started checking ph it was very acidic. Should my ph be consistent between 6-7? I have been using ACV pluS BAKING SODA with the enzymes for about a week Have lost weight and I am really watching what I eat. Have high blood pressure but control it with medication. please helpe me get the burning mouth and tongue under conttrol. Do I stop the enzymes, increase the ACV, use lemon, other supplements? I just am so worn down from the burning mouth and tongue Had blood work done - B12 and folic acid ok as was the complete blood count.Still use the baking soda as mouthwash. Have white coating on tongue - had to take antibotics a couple of times last year. They really bother me. Please help. Thank you so much."
Ted from Bangkok, Thailand replies: "Dear Nancy: The enzymes are acid forming, but than are the antibiotics. The body may go into acid quite often with that. Certain supplements with the word hydrochloride also are not helping.
What I do know is in one case just taking some potassium citrate 1/8 with 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda with water taken for twice a day for instance, without the enzymes, antibiotics and taken for about 2 weeks should help. Using mouthwash 4-5 times a day with baking soda is helpful. If there is any more we can neutralize the acid, if you are desperate enough, than just take a bath with baking soda. If that is not enough, then one small pinch of borax in the drinking water. Acid forming fungus may be present in your system and the borax will usually kill that preventing the acid from eating up your system.
It must be stressed that your condition can either be a deficiency in bicarbonates, or that certain microbes are creating a real acid waste as it lives inside a human host. To kill these microbes, is two fold, apply lavender oil on the skin, or eucalyptus oils on the arms, leg and neck. The other issue taking plenty of zinc supplements, preferably, zinc acetate, 50 mg/day for every other day. Other forms are acceptable such as zinc gluconate, or zinc citrate. Selenium supplements, chromium , and molybdenum may help. The simplest way to deal with acid tongue besides the baking soda and potassium citrate, is 1/2 teaspoon of real good (gray semi moist) sea salt in one liter of water drank all day. The sea salt should kill the microbes causing the acidity issue and that should help. A higher concentration of sea salt than this recommended may speed the killing of microbes forming acid by hyperosmolarity (concentrated salt environment).
Over alkalinity is a rarity, but it does happen. But it has nothing to do with too much bicarbonates in practice. It has more to do with eating too much food rich in phosphorous, phosphates and other similar phosphorus container food and drinks. Phosphorous, too much of it anyway, tends to promote fungus growth, which by the way are acid formers. Antibiotics promote fungus growth indirectly since it is made from fungus extracts during production.
It must be stressed that you can't drink any fruit juices or protein supplements. Protein supplements are acid forming, fruit juices taken along with food causes slower stomach digestion, and may cause an acid reflux.
If all these above recommendations do not work, consider 12 drops of 3% Hydrogen peroxide taken every 2-3 hours and perhaps some vitamin C. Ozonate the room and this may reduce the fungus colonies causing the acid tongue, if the previous suggestion are not working out.
Hope this extra info will be helpful. "
Combination of Many Symptoms
Diane : "Thank you for Ted's comments. I have now moved to Nottingham and have found an holistic practicioner who agrees with a lot of info from your site. I have taken Teds remedies on board and am feeling a lot better. I am not sure where to get the disodium though as i am not sure what it is. I am on the zinc and B vitamins etc though. I am still oil pulling and have found that my face is a lot smoother. The hydrogen peroxide must be working along with the other remedies but I'm not sure which is the best method, inhalation or drinking. Can Ted help me on this? also how much do I need for prevention once I have been cured? The ACV and Bicarb seem to be giving me more energy also so all in all htings are looking up! Thank you"
Ted from Bangkok, Thailand replies: "Dear Diane:' Disodium EDTA is a chelating substance which removesfree heavy metals from the source, such as drinkingwater for example. Assuming I am tested postive forfree heavy metal in my urine, then adding 1/4-1/2teaspoon of Disodium EDTA to one liter of water willcause my urine to be free of the heavy metals. Oneexception to the EDTA is that it only chelates thefree heavy metals. I will drink this one liter ofwater over the course of a day. If I drink more thanone liter, I will add EDTA also to the second liter ofwater, for example. However oil pulling is also great for removing heavymetals from your body too, such that I sometimes referthis as oil chelation. However, most bacteria, mycoplasma and heavy metals tend to be oil solubleorganisms making oil pulling one way to reduce theproblem. Most food processor should have disodium EDTA as afood preservative so you might obtain it from thatsource, but different countries are subjected todifferent controls. Most difficult for me, to obtainany chemicals appears to be UK. I do not know whyperhaps restrictions in the sale of chemicals.Once you are cured, maintenance dose of 1/2 teaspoonof bicarbonates are needed, which can be distributedto two doses at 1/4 teaspoon in the morning and 1/4teaspoon before bedtime. Howeve,r it is becoming increasingly evident that certain people do need thisagain around 11.00 a.m. as a preventive of certainsymptoms from appearing, which often occurs around12.00 p.m. to about 4.00 p.m., when the body is most stressed."
Acid Taste and Loose Stools
E from St. Augustine, FL: "Thanks for your info! This is what the 'Net was originally intended for, free exchange of data! You helped me! Now, if I could just get rid of the GI Tract problem. I find I have loose stools with increased frequency as the day progresses. I thought it was too much flaxseed oil. Switched to meal, and my gut was OK for a day or two and then, whamo--back to diarrhea. I'm losing minerals, I realize. It's been a few months. I drink lots of green tea, with honey. Take L-Carnitine several times a day, but that's never bothered me before. No fried foods, no dairy, no meat, no wheat -- well, just reintroduced wheat germ, again--no coffee, no alcohol, no white flour products. I wonder if it IS the wheat gluten. I'm in great shape; cholesterol where it should be. Only 2 symptoms, acid taste and loose stools. Can you please e-mail me, as I may miss your answer on this site. I work almost 24/7. Praise God!"
Ted from Bangkok, Thailand replies: "Dear E: When you take baking soda, take it on an empty stomach. Wait at least 1 hour before taking food and wait at least 1 hour if you want to take it after you eat food. Baking soda don't mix well with salt. Salt is a commonly added to our food which might cause diarrhea or loose stools. In fact my remedy for constipation is baking soda plus sea salt. It works in minutes. Therefore it is necessary to take baking soda without taking on anything. It is o.k. to add baking soda with ACV. My other take is vitamin B5 (panthenol or pantothenic acid) and magnesium chloride also helps gastrointestinal distress, but it works best on an empty stomach too."
Mysterious Sore Throat for 2 Years
Bill : "Suffering from mysterious sore throat for last 2 years, but almost never actual heartburn. ENT prescribed PPIs for acid reflux. While taking PPIs, over last 2 years, have drastically changed eating habits and become generally a healthier person. Throat pain still persists, although lessened. ENT tells me to double PPIs. I finally have enough and quit taking pills. Within one week of quitting meds, end up with full blown heartburn after every meal. Turn to this website for alternative solution. After 2 days of the ACV treatment, end up with SEVERE mouth/tongue ulcers as described by another list poster. I'm nearing the end of my 2 week, twice daily, baking soda/water treatment. Ulcers now clearing up. I'm still interested in checking out the ACV remedy, but I'm a bit hesitant after the SEVERE mouth ulcers. How would I proceed? Should I try the vinegar again? HELP PLEASE."
Ted from Bangkok, Thailand replies: "Bill: Several people who use ACV do report ulcers of the mouth and tongue this is common when the body does not have sufficient bicarbonate. My own ACV therapy is much different here in Bangkok. I always add one 3% baking soda to all ACV because most people do have bicarbonate deficiency. The best way to proceed is to add baking soda 3% with each dose of ACV and ulcers should not be a problem and heartburn is also reduced. One purist here in Bangkok does not like my the idea of adding baking soda. In which case an alternative is possible. Taking baking soda from 2 weeks to 1 month. Then you can start with ACV. The catch is that you still need to take baking soda everyday. Do not try to get baking soda out of the equation. If you are a biologist or even a biochemist, like me, you will realized that when scientists try to cultivate tissue samples, or cause the heart to beat in a solution, the ideal solution is that you always need salt, and the SECOND most important element is sodium bicarbonate! Our Western diet and conventional medicine completely ignores the importance of this but this is absolutely needed in a biological system. Don't even assume that the body can create them. Our body is not a perfect chemical factory. If they were so perfect, we would NOT get sick! Here is a mammalian solution often called a Tyrode's solution we used to keep tissue samples alive. I often use this as a reference material when preparing electrolyte solutions I give to some friends who are really sick. It often works better than those sports drink. Just remember this is NOT a perfect formula because of the nuances in chemical names and other things, but I am to prove why your body NEEDS sodium bicarbonates (as well as magnesium chloride) in your diet. Salt is often the basic requirement yes, but those that is not mentioned in conventional medicine where the second largest amounts of turns out to be bicarbonates and magnesium which gets me thinking to use them quite often in all my therapy.
Here is the recipe I recently prepared (not perfect): Tyrode's Mammalian Solution
Name Grams Sea Salt 8.
Potassium Chloride .2
Calcium Chloride .3
Magnesium Chloride .21
Sodium Bicarbonate 1.
sodium dihydrogen .1
Add water to 1 liter
As you can see for a person who weighs 5 kilograms, and assuming he is 7% water, the amount of water is 5 x .7 = 35 kilogram. 35 x 1%/1 = 3.5 grams! This is roughly equal to my dose of about 1/2 teaspoon. The body tends to deplete them in a matter of about 12 hours at the longest for nonexercise it takes about 48 hours to deplete them entirely. Baking soda is the second largest amount of element we NEED in our diet that gets depleted fairly rapidly. As for glucose and calcium most of our diets are quite sufficient, with one major exception: magnesium chloride. So this is why we need Baking soda and Magnesium chloride as our basic staple of food. You can calculate your daily basic requirements for magnesium chloride using the same formula too. It comes out to 35 x .2/1 = .7 grams or 7 milligrams at about twice a day is my simple estimates.
So take your bicarbonate as a dietary requirement. I have my own Ted's RDA (Recommended Daily Allowance) not to be confused with the government's RDA - they don't have any and it is at least 3.5 grams per day. However when you have ulcers this is a sign of bicarbonate deficiency and you will have to take twice the Ted's RDA for at least 2 weeks. You will then take it at 3.5 grams a day as a dietary supplement to prevent this. Ulcers, at least for the tongue and mouth, is a sign of a bicarbonate deficiency. Who know other ulcers (e.g. stomach ulcers) might also be this issue too! So take your bicarbonate dietary intake seriously! I prefer the bicarbonate + citric acid as this buffers my body's pH much better in achieving optimal Urinary pH. If of course you bother to check your urinary pH using the electronic pocket pH meter - you will know you need it! However, without the gadgets it is about 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda plus 1/4 teaspoon of citric acid at about twice a day on an empty stomach. Besides, the reaction of citric acid and baking soda results in sodium citrate, which is a cure for dentin sensitivity and inflammations for your own body. So this formula too might also be helpful with ulcers, but probably not as good as just taking sodium bicarbonates alone."
