I've tried garlic insertion for almost a week now, but the smell got worse. The smell is so horrible! It's sour-like smell accompanied by the garlic scent. I can literally smell it when I am sitting on a frog-style. What to do? I'm so sick and tired of this. Please help!

Hydrogen Peroxide and Probiotic Douche

I cured my BV!

For the entire summer, I had a very bad case of BV. I went to the doctor, he gave me a strong antibiotic which I never used, treated it myself and here's how I did it.

At first I tried ACV soaked tampon as its my favorite natural remedy....did not work. I tried soaking a tampon in Hydrogen peroxide and that whole method, did not work. When I was at the doctor I told him of some of the natural remedies I was reading about and he suggested never wearing a tampon for any reason as every time you take out a tampon, it strips your vaginal canal of all the good bacteria in there!

Although I never douched it my life, I decided to give the hydrogen peroxide douche remedy a shot. I bought 4 generic douches (not scented, just the regular), emptied a bottle, filled it halfway with hydrogen peroxide, and cracked open a good women's probiotic, poured it right in the bottle. Topped it off with filtered water. I then used the douche in the shower, making sure to hold in the mixture as long as I could, then letting it flow out naturally. Morning and night I did this douche for several days even if the smell seemed to have faded, finally cleared it up after about 2 weeks and I mean this BV was bad for a while....every time I'd squat or open my legs I could smell it...metallic, fishy odor. Doc also recommended using condoms and having my husband "pull out" during sex as to not affect the pH balance even more.

Due to reading many posts, I was also taking folate (not folic acid, folate) and popping garlic pills. Do NOT know if this helped as I take meds/vitamins/pills very sporadically, I can't help it I'm just bad at it (its why the birth control pill never really worked for me HAHA! ).

Here I am months later and now have my husband on a good men's probiotic as I realized since the first case of BV, whenever he doesn't "pull out"....smell starts coming back. If it does, I douche once with the hydrogen peroxide/probiotic/water mix and its all cleared up.

If you are hesitant about using the hydrogen peroxide, start with filtered water + probiotic to at least help get good bacteria up there to do it's job! Douches are Not what our mothers used. The part that gets inserted has holes on the side not the top, nothing is getting pushed up further towards the cervix. Using common sense and being in tune with your body to figure out dosages. Obviously if you've never used a douche before, do not go 100% hydrogen peroxide. Dilute it and work up to higher quantities until you are at about 50/50% water/hydrogen peroxide.

My favorite probiotic, that incidentally has cleared up uti's and helped with yeast infections can be purchased online and at most organic food stores. The brand I like has 24 strains with 100 Billion CFU and prebiotic inulin.

Hope this helps someone out there! And worry not ladies....as much as we notice the smell, many times our men don't. My husband did not and I had to point it out...still he didn't care ;)

Vitamin C, Alkalizing
Posted by Anne (Dallas, Tx) on 12/30/2017
★★★★★

In my effort to find a cure for BV, I came across this website and tried many of the remedies recommended. I tried hydrogen peroxide, acidophilus capsules, folic acid, tea tree vaginal suppositories, boric acid capsules, turpentine with sugar cubes. Nothing worked.

I kept reading and researching and came across the suggestion to alkalize the body. I again researched on the process and came across apple cider vinegar and baking soda combo to make alkaline water. At the same time, I read about the benefits of inserting vitamin C tablet with rose hips. I have used both the vitamin C with rose hips and made alkaline water by mixing water with a dash of apple cider vinegar and half a teaspoon of baking soda. I add sweetener for taste. The recommended dosage for the vitamin C is 250mg tablet. I bought the 1000mg tablet and even though it has been three days and the odor seems to have subsided, I got an irritation around the vulva. I obviously did not push the vitamin C tablet far enough or the strength was too high. It is recommended to use a tampon once you insert the vitamin C tablet to prevent irritation to the vulva and also to ensure that it stays in place and does what it is supposed to do.

Fingers crossed that these two remedies work. I will continue using the alkaline water and take a break from the vitamin C regimen. I used the Vitamin C for 3 days, inserted at night. Most people experienced relief from using the Vitamin C alone and only after three days of use.

I hope this information helps someone. BV sucks.

Kefir

I've read that kefir has better staying power than yogurt, so I wanted to suggest ladies utilize kefir rather than yogurt for bv treatment. And that some strains of probiotics produce hydrogen peroxide, which strains are probably preferred.

The box of Bv cream from the store came with reusable applicator tubes that can be used for applying yogurt or kefir, etc. rather than a syringe if you don't find one.

If the Bv returns during your period you could try treating rectally those days. For example, mince fresh garlic, let stand 10 minutes to activate, add to olive oil and apply as retention enema.

Thank you for the wonderful website!

Apple Cider Vinegar, Probiotics

I have been suffering from chronic/recurrent BV for almost 10 years now but, I also have Graves/Hashimotos Thyroiditis and feel like this would be the main cause. I didn't have a "flare up" for a while until recently, as of about a month and a half ago, because some idiot Nurse Practitioner prescribed me an antibiotic for my infected tooth without prescribing me with the metronidazole that I asked for. She specifically told me to go get an OTC yeast cure and I told her they don't work (I really have a distaste for the medical field). Well, it progressed and unfortunately, BAM! Hit with BV all over again.

Just 3 days ago, I went and got a gallon of organic ACV (apple cider vinegar) with "the mother" and an 8-strain, 100 billion CFU's probiotic. (Mind, you the smell is putrid and fishy for the last month or so).

Day 1: I mixed 3 tsp. Of ACV in 16 oz of water and downed/drank it; then took 1 probiotic pill; diluted 50/50 purified water and ACV, soaked a folded paper towel, parted my labia, pressed the soaked paper towel up against the outside of my vagina for 3-5 minutes, twice this day. I see excess discharge shortly after but the smell is gone.

Repeated on Day 2: smell is gone and discharge is now clear.

Day 3 (TODAY my period begins): Have now downed (2)-16 oz bottles of water/ACV mixture, still taking 1 probiotic pill of 100 billion CFU's and making sure I change my tampon every 4 hours; smell still gone.

Will do the 50/50 ACV paper towel "press" after I shower. I will continue this process for the duration of my cycle and once my cycle is over, I will do an ACV sits bath in "cool" water and take TWO (2) probiotic pills for just one day following the sits bath. I don't like the idea of suppositories and douches because my hormones are off anyway due to having auto-immune and being thyroidless, so I've chosen this "put-together" method. So far, all is well and this is the most comfortable period I've had in a long time and my BV symptoms dissipated within 24 hours time!

Good Luck Ladies!

I've been battling BV for 3 months. I've done hydrogen peroxide douches/tampon inserts, acidophilus douches AND taking orally, ACV douches, etc. I too can get rid of the smell for a day but it always comes back. Been at it for about 3 months. HAve you finally got rid of it? I have antibiotics from the doctor, but don't want to use them unless I have to!

That would be useless since the Borax will kill the probiotic organisms. Better to wait until the BV is under control and then use a trusted probiotic.

Men and BV
Posted by Specialk (Washington Dc) on 01/31/2017

I have been a long time sufferer of BV. This time – both me and my man are getting treatment. He was prescribed Flagyl by his doctor and I will also take the pills and metro gel. I will take them both at the same time. I plan to follow instructions and keep a chart to track OUR progress. One thing I noticed – While single, I got treated after ending a 4 year relationship I didn't suffer AT ALL for two years. As soon as I had sex, unprotected with my new partner – it came back! So – theory is, men can't be tested for it, but ITS BACTERIA – they can be carriers. If a woman he dated prior to me had it, but showed no symptoms and men are constantly being told they can't get it or have it – it's obviously not true. However, again – no studies to prove it. My hope is that once we complete our treatment – we are BV free for good! He's a really gem – he's been suffering alongside with me. I will get the folic acid pills and take them too. I hope this works. Since both vaginal intercourse and oral sex can increase your risk of BV – we plan to obtain from it all until we finish – no kissing, no oral, no nothing until we are done and we plan to wait about two weeks after treatment. From that point, I'll chart our progress. Keep us in prayer.

Good to know…

Folic Acid 1000 mg (can be found at an organic market or online)

Tea Tree Oil Suppositories work – funny smell, but better than FISH! (can be found at an organic market or online)

There are two really good probiotics for BV which can be found at CVS or online/Amazon.

Vitamin B Complex

I pray for all those on this site.

BV Treatments You Must Not Try

Buttermilk

Buttermilk has worked great for me too, much better than plain yogurt. I use a plastic syringe to get it into the vagina and rub it on the vulva. I have instant relief from itching and burning...try it.

I also took antibiotics, but the BV came back within a few weeks. I got new prescription for antibiotics, but I'm not willing to keep using it and it seems it is causing more harm than good for many. Even if the BV comes back every now and then, buttermilk is an easy solution and safer than other treatment options.

Thanks my fellow Cincinnatian. Hopefully this Apple Cider Vinegar treatment will work for me as well. I'm 35 and this is my first BV outbreak although doc told me I had it before (but no symptoms or smells at all).at that time I was taking Apple Cider Vinegar religiously (trying to lose belly fat) so I think that helped my pH balance internally.

Anyway, you're right, every body is different and I will try the Apple Cider Vinegar douche temporarily to clear up symptoms only. I will follow it up with organic plain yogurt suppository to add good bacteria back down there.

Colloidal Silver

Folic acid can help those with BV, but it doesn't help for everyone. Everyone's body is different. I have recently started using COLLOIDAL SILVER. I tried so many other "cures" which were unsuccessful. Since I have started using the silver I have felt better than I have felt in several years. My main side effect of BV was excessive discharge. After taking the silver within days my discharge had became almost nonexistant. It is pricey so I would recommend other treatments first but if they fail definetely give this a try. I have purchased the micro particle generator to make my own because you end up saving a lot of money by not paying retail value. Don't buy the really cheap ones they wont work well.

Colloidal Silver
Posted by Penny (Utah) on 06/11/2017

I've been suffering with BV that started during my pregnancy in 2016 & it continues still today 2 months postpartum. I thought it was maybe just hormonal changes & related itchiness/dryness from said hormone fluctuations that were the cause but now I'm thinking it's actually an infection of sorts. I'm taking L-5-methyltetrahydrofolate (the bioactive form of folic acid) along with methyl B12,100 billion cfu probiotics x2, drinking some organic lemon juice & ACV in water, & tonight tried some 250 ppm colloidal silver (1 dropper full) mixed with a peri bottle of water in the shower & after the shower to wash my vagina with. Then after that was dry, I sprayed a bit of full strength ACV with the mother in it on my good girl & let it air dry before putting on cotton panties. I will continue this method for a few days to see if it helps relieve me of the burning & itching, luckily I've not had much of a discharge prior to this, just the occasional watery discharge & slight burning when I pee.

Omg This sounds just like what I'm going through. I've had BV off and on now for like two years. It has been ruining my life. I've been searching for different cures because the gel my doctor always prescribes doesn't work for long. I just came across this website and tried the ACV bath yesterday, it helped. I didn't have a smell anymore, or any gross discharge. But unfortunately it came back, I don't know what else to try. I guess I have to do some research about those pills.

I am a chronic bv sufferer. I have been dealing with bv off and on for at least years. The doctors will give you an antibiotic that will wipe all of your bacteria out and then tell you that there is no way to put the good bacteria back therefore resulting in another bv attack. I have decided to natural cure my bv because the doctors just want you to come back for the office visit money!! I use a combination of peroxide and I use tea tree oil. Once the smell goes away I start taking my probiotic but you need one that has more than one strand of lactobacillius. I find that the probiotics with lots of strands work more effectively and the ones that have at least 20 billion cfu. Good luck ladies!!

So I have been suffering from BV for 4 months, and I have tried EVERYTHING you can think of. Every home remedy, vH essenitals suppositories (helped a little), ph-D boric acid suppositories (didn't really do anything), Flagyl (worked until I came on my cycle). I just so happen to do a sitz bath with grapefruit essential oil, lavender oil, and 1 cup of dead sea salt, and 7 cups of very warm water ( be careful not to burn yourself), and I soaked for 20 minutes...I also douched with this combination as well. In the douche bottle I do a pinch of sea salt, 5 drops each of grapefruit and lavender with water filled to the top at morning and at night. I made the mistake of doing it the first time with 20 drops of grapefruit oil, and lets that was a big mistake lol. I'm still doing it and it is working so far for roughly 5 days now...So hopefully this helps.

I have been suffering from BV I believe for as long as I remember. Even as a young child, and I'm only 18. It's not so much about sexual reasons, but having BV makes life really uncomfortable. The constant itching, the terrible smell, just feeling dirty. Plus I have stomach/intestinal issues as well and I've tried a lot of things but I always feel like I am in pain. If you could please help me out and explain what diet/detox you went on, the types of fruits and veggies that you ate, whatever helps :-) plus any other tips. This could be life changing for me and I'd really appreciate it.

I am trying to find others in these posts who have had recurring BV without any clear reasons. I have been trying to get rid of mine with antibiotics and will try the hydrogen peroxide routine ASAP. But here's my discovery. I use a water-based lubricant, and I found a long list of ingredients that can cause BV in lubricants. That explains why I keep getting BV over and over again. One ingredient to stay away from is glycerin, for example. Another is sucralose. That makes sense, because those are sugars that can change the pH balance. I made a list of all the ingredients and will do some more research, but has anyone else found personal lubricants to be a cause of recurring BV?

Hydrogen Peroxide Variations

I'm here to let other women know they CAN treat BV while on their periods. I am 24, pretty healthy, and I take birth control pills, which is why I think my pH gets so crazy on my period. My pH seems to change when I get my period, causing the worst itch and irritation. Let me start by telling you how I got here.

A few months ago, I had the most uncomfortable, burning itch that I kept getting around/on my period. It became so unbearable, I did some research and thought it was a yeast infection. Looking back on it, I realize now it was BV. After trying to use OTC treatment for a yeast infection (monostat 1 was so painful! ), I irritated the BV (imagine your lady parts as a balloon animal) and ended up paying about $100 extra to see a doctor, who prescribed me all kinds of crap. Since then, to get rid of my itch and fix the balance of my natural pH levels, I have been mixing hydrogen peroxide with equal parts water, and adding a splash of apple cider vinegar. I insert that with a syringe (no needle, duh) and rinse with it about three times in the morning. Since tampons only irritate me more, I use a menstrual cup. I lube my cup with coconut oil and insert it after rinsing with the mixture.

Then I take two acidophilus pills orally and drink an ACV/water mixture and go about my day.

When I need to rinse my cup at night before bed, I repeat the above steps. I tried soaking the mixture in a tampon and that didn't do much for me, plus I hate how tampons irritate my vagina. I highly recommend trying the cup, especially if you have painful periods and tend to have sensitive skin. So far I have had no problems and the happiest period I've had in a while! Good luck, hope this helps!

BV cure for me:

1. Stop drinking coffee. For some reason, this has always started problems when I drink coffee for a few months, then bam! I stop drinking coffee (along with a few other things, and no BV for years). Why I never learn and eventually go back to drinking it, I'll never know.

2. Good quality, refrigerated probiotics. The room-temp probiotics on the shelves never did anything for me. You must get the expensive refrigerated (fem, vag, etc.) stuff (over $20). Locally, I go to "the vitamin shoppe" to get mine.

3. vitamin C. also try vitamin D, zinc, and folic acid. These are cheap and you should prob take them anyway. I also hear Iron, but don't know... I am often low on Iron on my blood tests, so makes sense. Take Iron with Iodine to prevent constipation. Try to cut sugar and carbs too.

4. Important event? buy "RePHresh" over the counter. No smell! But it will come back in a day or two. I hear boric acid is similar temporary effect. Just helps with PH.

5. Douching with hydrogen peroxide may work well if you catch it right away, it had for me, but if it is gone too far, or re-occurs, it won't work.

6. In regards to cleaning....The smell literally didn't wash out of me undies with reg detergent... get a natural detergent, like 7th generation, works much better. I also like to clean my bathroom with "bac-out". You can try putting a few drops of tea tree oil in your tub too, if you like to take baths like I do.

The most effective method to cure this condition is by treating the liver (and consequently kidney, since it's closely connected to liver). 100% success rate for me and I never get it again since 6 years ago. Had it 2 times in my life and used this method. What's fantastic about it is that it works immediately. (Smell is gone right after doing it, and stay gone for good unlike other methods.)
