Effective Natural UTI Remedies for Quick Relief

Baking Soda

I suffer from frequent urinary tract irritations and do not want to alway go on antibiotics. I have tried almost every remedy out there from nettle tea to probiotics. For the past two episodes, I found a recommendation on the internet to drink a teaspoon of baking soda diluted in water and miraculously the burning goes away almost instantly. It might have something to do with the acid/alkaline in my system overreacting and the baking soda acts as a soother?

I believe Adele Davis, in one of her books, recommended magnesium for bladder infections.

Uva Ursi

I have also used Uva Ursi in the past for Candida. It can affect the liver so be sure to get plenty of Vit C as well. By plenty I mean a lot. I normally take at least 6000 mg of Vit C divided into at least 2 doses. Start little w/the Vit C and work your way up to larger doses. Dr Linus Pauling recommeded 18 to 20 mg a day just for health maintainance. You will definitely get diahrrea if you try to take large amounts of Vit C if you aren't used to that large a dose.

Francisca, My mistake! Thanks for noticing so I can correct it. I meant to say 18 to 20 grams of vitamin C, not milligrams. Actually I've taken 6-9 or more grams a day for years. The only side effect I've noticed is that I look 15-20 years younger than I am. I can handle that kind of side effect just fine.

D-Mannose

I have had 7 UTI's in the 2 years, which I attribute to too much sex with younger boyfriend. I found out about D-Mannose from a friend last last year. I don't take drugs so I was more than happy to give it a try.

The moment I know I have a UTI, I take 1 teaspoon of the powder and drink 4 -25 oz bottles of water for 2-3 hours... I just keep drinking water and urinating it out. I do this from the early morning until 5 pm. Drinking the water each time I take a teaspoon. Lots and lots of water. It is gone by 8 pm. As a maintenance, I take 1 teaspoon once a week followed by 50 oz of water.

D-Mannose
Posted by Lisa (Pleasant Prairie, Wi, Us) on 01/23/2011

Will taking D-mannose when I do NOT have a bladder infection cause symptoms similar to actually having an infection? One month ago, before I had heard of mannose, I had a bladder infection diagnosed via urinalysis/lab results. I tried treating myself with cranberry, vitamin C, etc... But the pain got too intense and I resorted to antibiotics. After I finished the antibiotics (and lots of probiotics) I continued to take cranberry, then discovered mannose which I began to alternate with the cranberry for maintenance. One week later I started having those old feelings again!

I began the mannose as directed, 2-3 pills 3 times a day for about 4 days. In the meantime, I had a urinalysis that revealed no infection. I still had the heavy, full feeling in the bladder area, worsening as the bladder fills. I have stopped the mannose and the symptoms are lessening leading me to wonder if the mannose caused the symptoms (while no e coli present?). Thanks for reading. Go Packers :)

I have currently beeing going through something similar. Tried to get rid of the UTI on my own, but ended up taking the antibiotics. For a few days after I finished the anti's, I felt fine/normal. Then I kept getting this pressure feeling, which I had for over a week after. However, I had no other symptoms of a UTI. My friends parent is a pharmasist, and he said that that feeling could actually be from the antibiotics and nothing to do with the UTI. I started taking probiotics and after about 5 days on those the pressure feeling has gotten much much better. It could have actually just been an after-effect of the antibiotics. I have heard great things about d-mannose from a doctor I recently saw and I am going to start taking it everyday as per his directions to help prevent UTI's in the future.

D-Mannose

I took D-Mannose to get rid of a bladder infection - I took 1/4 teaspoon every 3-4 hours. I got the WORST gas pains of my life. I kept taking it hoping it would work and it did, however, the next day I was in agony with bladder and kidney pain. It took days for it to go away and I will NEVER EVER take D-Mannose again.

I took the pure powder not pills and I took less than the recommended dose. Afterward I felt like I had a worse bladder infection and kept going to the clinic to get tested for UTI which I do not have - instead I have a painful bladder and kidneys. I have blood in my urine. I got tested for Kidney Stones and I don't have them.

Anyway, for those that notice their symptoms get worse with D-Mannose, it is not your imagination. Some of use just do not respond well to D-Mannose regardless of whether it is a natural product.

I got gas too the first time I took it. Only once tho, and it was pretty bad gas, I was in bed cramping all nite, and in pain. I think I read thats normal. And you have to take ALOT of d mannose, Like in two days Ive finished half the jar, but its actually working for me this time, where in the past, taking smaller amounts, I actually threw it away cuz it didnt do anything. Thats why I ordered another jar. Id say to treat a really bad infection you need to take two jars of d mannose, Im serious.

I have a UTI and started taking D-Mannose. I had such pain and bloat I thought I would burst. I blamed it on some take out we had eaten... took some more the next morning and had the same effect. Some of us just can't take this stuff... I'd rather have the UTI than the d-mannose.

D-Mannose, Garlic, Alkaline Pills
Posted by Francisca (Michelbach-le-bas, Alsace, France) on 10/25/2010

I am not sure about the odorless garlic pills as I have just read that they don't have the same work as fresh garlic because the pungent odor means that you are getting the good stuff. I think that it makes sense..... But it is a good idea about using the garlic against the UTI. I don't have a lot anymore but I will try if I ever have one again! I hate antibiotics..... I just add crushed garlic through my food, no problem or sometimes in the salads.

Sounds great but do read about the side effects of cinnamon on this site! I was quite surprised to find out that cinnamon is not completely safe. I do have bladder infections once in a while but I wouldn't take it on a regular basis!

Omg, d-mannose does NOTHING for me. I've tried several times over the years, cuz I'm a chronic UTI sufferer.

This last time, I must have drank a TBSP, in a tall glass of water, every few hours for two days, and no difference, I just got the runs!!!

I wasn't really all that surprised, it's like drinkin sugar water. That's what it is. Some kind of natural sugar that is not metabalized in the body but excreted in the urine. I guess its supposed to bind to the bacteria in the process. I really gave this a good shot, and it didnt work for me.

I battled UTI's for years on a monthly basis and had doctors give me 3-5 day doses of antibiotics which only made me resistant. I could not get the doctors to understand what they were doing! So, I searched out natural remedy's that I now swear by. This is my daily routine & when I have an infection (which has been 2x' in the last 3 years!)

Daily:
ACV pill 2x's a day
UVA URSA pills 2x's a day (there are some pills that are for balancing the urinary tract system that have this herb in it)
Vitamin C 1x's a day
Water, water, water
Keep it clean down there, especially after sex

During a UTI:
Double or triple dosage of ACV
Double UVA URSA dosage
Sit in a shallow tub with warm water and 1-2 cups of ACV. Soak for about 5 minutes.
Cut out all sugar

I have shared this with friends who now swear off doctors for UTIs.

Cranberry

I have tried various cures on this sight for my UTI and none of it was working, even stuff not listed here. I tried just cranberry, I tried the extract, the pills, and different juices and none of it worked until I found a strictly cranberry juice (no sugar added or other juices). I poured a cup of the cranberry juice and diluted it with a cup of water and chugged the whole thing down. I did this once a day. First day, the pain dropped almost to nothing. Today, I did this drink when I got up and there is zero pain anymore. I'm going to do this one more day and just be done with it. I feel like I'm cured.

Alkaseltzer only worked temporarily.
ACV worked for that day only and stopped working.
Lemon seemed to help kill this faster.

Cranberry extract (just a drop or two - it's potent stuff!) clears up urinary tract infections in humans and dogs (probably in cats also, but I've never tried).

Humans: dilute two drops in 8 oz. of water and drink. Use twice a day until gone (usually within 36 hours). Or just drink diluted regular cranberry juice, sugar-free.

Dogs: dilute one or two drops (depending on size of dogs) in water and squirt down throat with a medicine syringe. Use twice a day until gone (usually within 36 hours).

While I agree with cranberry extract for urinary tract problems. Plain Cranberry juice will not be strong enough to correct a problem. There is no way a person could drink enough of it.

Apple Cider Vinegar, D-Mannose

I'm new to this site but SO glad I found it! I have been suffering from a recurring UTI for the past 3 months and I was getting fed up with all of the harsh antibiotics I'd been prescribed (Cipro, Bactrim). I am also without health insurance at this time, so I began to search on the internet for effective NATURAL remedies to get rid of this awful infection once and for all and that's when I read about apple cidar vinegar and D-Mannose. I bought a small jar of ____ Apple Cidar Vinegar (with the mother) from my local whole foods and not being totally convinced it would work, sprung for the D-Mannose tablets too. I've found that the apple cidar vinegar was pretty strong, but I still put two tsp in a glass of water (or tea or cranberry juice) three times a day for three days. The frequency of urination was beginning to subside, but because I was taking both ACV and D-Mannose, I couldn't determine which one was working. Since the ACV was giving my stomach a hard time, I decided to stop taking it for a day or two, but kept up the D-Mannose. To my astonishment (and relief), the D-Mannose seems to have done the trick! No more frequent, painful urination! Today is Day 6 of treating my UTI on my own (Day 3 of taking ONLY D-Mannose) and so far, so good! I feel like a normal human being again! I've read that D-Mannose is only effective in powder form, but I have to disagree, at least in my case. I take two capsules first thing in the morning with a full glass of water and one capsule at night before bed and presto! No moe UTI! (Although I do want to point out that since drinking the ACV, my skin has never looked better!) I just wanted to share my experience, as so many of you have shared yours, and hope that sharing my experience might help someone, as I have been helped by this site! Good luck in searching for natural remedies and remember - don't give up! There ARE other ways to treat infection and disease besides what your doctor pushes on you. Find answers and find good health!

Club Soda
Posted by Tricia (Ireland) on 08/10/2009

I hadn't heard of club soda for uti's but it is an age old remedy here in ireland for heartburn. (Thanks to Ted, now I know why it works) I discovered it when I was pregnant and afraid to try any other medications or remedies in case I hurt my baby. This stuff was a godsend. It is essentially the same as teds recipe with added carbonated water. Teds remedy works out an awful lot cheaper though.

Another one that I used when I was pregnant was club tonic water for leg and foot cramps. It contains quinine and seemimgly this is what a doctor will give you in tablet form for this ailment anyway.

Club Soda
Posted by Carolyn (Sacramento, Ca) on 10/08/2011

I am currently taking D-mannose for a recurrance of a UTI after Cipro (some surprise right! ). Is it ok to take baking soda and water or club soda while still on the D-Mannose? I know that D-Mannose works by making the e-coli stick to the d-mannose molecules and then flush out in urination. I think that baking soda, club soda, and lemon juice all work because they make the urine alkaline. Does that interfere with D-Mannose? Interesting that Uva Ursi only works in alkaline urine. I thought that getting your urine alkaline was what cured the UTI. I'm confused!

Hematuria Remedies

8 years ago my son experienced hematuria when he was still 7 years old. The doctors suspected him og having a PAN, a conditon i dont fully understand. His basophils were higher then normal and many more. I combine medical treatment, pranic healing which was effective too and supported him of a fresh herbal tea as his drinking water. He recovered in a year depriving him from eating all prohibited foods and colored drinks. What I want to know if this is recurrent or heriditary as my grand daughter had a UTI at 7 months old. May I know our simple guides to prevent UTI (hematuria) from recurring? I am scared to hear this ailment. thank you

EC: "In medicine, hematuria, or haematuria, is the presence of red blood cells (erythrocytes) in the urine. It can be a sign that there is a kidney stone or a tumor in the urinary tract (kidneys, ureters, urinary bladder, prostate, and urethra), ranging from trivial to lethal. If white blood cells are found in addition to red blood cells, then it is a signal of urinary tract infection." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hematuria

Antibiotics, Cranberry Juice

Question - 3 different occasions (2 at my Dr. office and once at home)I took a test with test strips to determined a UTI and they all came back positive. My Dr. has recently had my urine cultured but it came back negative.

HISTORY*** May 12,09 I got a UTI, not diagnosed by a Dr. but by knowing what it feels like. So, I started with an over the counter cranberry med. that has worked for me in the past. After a couple of days the UTI felt better but it was obvious I still had it. I then added pure cranberry juice to the remedy but that did not change a thing. I read on this website to try apple cider vinegar, so I started with the pill form ( I can not drink it) again it felt better but still did not cure the UTI. I then went to my Dr. 7 Jun 09. That is when I was tested for the first time at the Dr. office and the test came back positive. The Dr. put me on a 7 day antibiotics at the end of the 7 days I still had the UTI. Thinking it was all in my mind, 2 days later I took an over-the-counter UTI test and it came back positive. I then made an appt with my Dr. once again, the Dr. took another UTI test and it came back positive and started my on a 10 day antibiotic. In the mean time the Dr. had my urine cultured and to our surprise it came back NEGATIVE. I am still having pain and AT A LOSS!! CAN YOU PLEASE HELP ME?

I read on your site to try apple cider vinegar and also another cure called D-Mannose. Wanting to nip this in the bud I tried them both simultaneously. Worked wonders. You can get D-Mannose from any health food store as well as unfiltered apple cider vinegar. I put 3 Tbl. of the vinegar in 24 oz of water, added 1 tsp. of D-Mannose and so I wouldn't gag I used some liquid stevia to soften the vinegar blow. It actually tasted good and did the trick. I drank about 3 glasses of that throughout the day and that was all it took.

Avoid Alcohol, Drink Water
Posted by min54teresa (Fresno, CA) on 05/14/2009

I am currently trying to heal a bladder infection sans antibiotics. I have Hep C & try to avoid them as much as possible in an attempt to treat my system & liver as best I can. My bladder infections have always been a result of not drinking enough water daily, combined with alcohol (usually a celebration) & a 'frisky' husband. ... Enough with the celebrations already! Yes, I know alcohol is the worst for Hep C, but I allow myself to sin a couple times a year if for no other reason than to remind myself that I DO NOT need to. I've been on an over the counter paid med for a few days while drinking tons of distilled water. I only drink DISTILLED water for my Hep C & it helps. The OTC pain meds help, but the infection is still lingering. I just came upon this site & will be trying the alkaseltzer & ACV today. I'll write an update within 24 hours FYI.

Wish me luck kids!

Apple Cider Vinegar and Baking Soda
Posted by Linda (Los Angeles, California) on 05/01/2012

Yes! This seems to work!! Its only been three days, but I'm feeling back to normal, and I had another one my SEVERE UTI episodes, to where I thought I would need Cipro again as my usual herbal remedy techniques including just staright apple cider vinegar, were not working at all. It felt the way it did before I got a kidney infection, so this was an advanced bladder infection. What I did::

I've been drinking a TON of fluids, constantly. Fruit juice and ice with dilited purrified water, TEA, water, Apple cider vinegar staight, 1/4th of a cup first thing UPON rising in the morning on an EMPTY STOMACH, (very inportant). Most people cannot do this, and it is, indeed, highly unpleasant, especially if you have stomach/heartburn problems/issues, but this has worked for me and UTI's in the past, but I pretend in my mind that Im drinking at the bar and taking a shot of some crazy strong alcohol, lol!

Then twice a day, I fill a large glass of water, and two capfuls or more, apple cider vinegar, than 1/2 teaspoon baking soda, and drink throughtout the day. The first day, (while you are in extreme and uncomfortable pain) I just chugged it. Once in the morn, fixed another concotion, nursed it thru-out the day, (along with other fluids, juice tea, etc) then chugged another concoction before goin to bed.

I'm gonna continue this for another week, altho I feel completely symptom free. I'm not chugging anymore, I'm just gonna nurture 2 glasses of this thru-out the day, (morning evening) I am so glad to be pain free, my God. I feel like Im going to die, it gets so bad, I was crying!

Also, becuz I'm fighting a cold, Ive been taking goldenseal tincture, and Grapefruit seed extract in empty gel caps twice daily aswell. Ive read before, both these herbs do indeed help with UTI's =, so they may be helping aswell. I feel a dropperful of goldenseal tincture in a gel cap in the morn, and about 6-10 drops grapefruit seed extract in another cap and take that in the morn, and do again both in the evening...

Cranberry

Just stumbled on this site. So hello everyone! This is a fantastic resource. Years ago I developed a UTI. Never have liked DRs so knew there had to be a better way, besides there's always the problem of antibiotics and yeast. Researched cranberry juice and calculated how much I would have to drink for any benefits, not to mention the sugar intake. Not that I'm opposed to sugar. I believe, in most cases, in moderation as opposed to abstinance. Then I spotted cranberry capsules in the vitamin section and thought, "what the hey". I have been taking 2 capsules in the morning for decades. Now you could probably count the # of bad habits I have and still need more toes and fingers. The least of which is sugar addiction. But I don't have UTIs. My oldest sister suffered from chronic ones and was real resentful that I hadn't turned her on to the caps long, long ago. But with the same treatment she hasn't had a problem for a decade. For my own reasons I have been treating bad life habits for yrs with natural remedies. So I might add that if you look at other cultures and their predominate lack of health issues, then research their nutrition habits many things can be avoided. Such as cayene capsules, Latinos and the lack of colon cancers. I take them for warmth in winter, (don't take w/some forms of stomach ulcer problems). I have just started to look into the C-nut oil thing. Vanity and my hair started it + extremely dry skin. Years ago I tried ACV and didn't care for the taste, yea I was once a baby about flavor. Decided to go back. Read about the upset stomachs/belching/gas over the oil. Have to say mine comes from the ACV not the oil. Like the one gal I too just "shoot" it down but I drink half my water before hand then more as a chaser. For those who are developing infections after sex. Maybe the best attack would be to treat your sexual partners also. Sex can be a big bargaining chip for getting your way. I would like to add that there's a supplement formula on the market which is excellent for toxic cleansing. Anyone who would like the name can write to the above e-address and I'd be glad to let you know where to find it. I am not a distributor. Just info about it.

Does anyone know the name of these? Or can figure out what it might be? Most TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine's) have English names. For example, I take "Liver Soothe" (English name) but its TCM name is: "Shu Gan Wan".
