Effective Natural Remedies for High Blood Pressure Management

Cold Showers
Posted by Cory (Tacoma, Washington) on 03/26/2007
★★★★★

I have been taking cold showers every day now for almost three months, and I recently got the results of my latest blood and urine lab tests from my doctor. Blood sugar and cholesterol were markedly lower than the tests showed just prior to starting the cold shower regimen, with no appreciable changes in diet or physical excercise. My blood pressure was lower, and my pulse rate at rest has decreased from 72 to 54, which I find amazing. I am not in "great" shape physically, and I can only attribute these changes to the cold showers. This might actually be the fountain of youth.

Hydrogen Peroxide

I use pharmacy strength 3% hydrogen peroxide -- drops in glass of water twice a day (about 7 drops thus far). My moderately elevated blood pressure reduced to normal, according to my doctor's records, without use of drugs. How long should I continue to pursue this treatment? Should I continue longer or cycle on and off in some way?

Blood Pressure and Age

Vera, You do sound healthy. And no, I am not trying to make it sound like there is something wrong you.

But I am also 73, and if I were you, and if I had your blood pressure, I would look into the possibility of hypothyroidism, as some day this info might save your life.

FYI, the greatest book on this subject is titled "Solved, The Riddle of Heart Attacks", Copyright 1976 by Broda O.Barnes, MD., published by Robinson Press Inc., Fort Collins, Colorado 80522.

I hope this will help.

Potassium
Posted by Tom 70 (Auckland, New Zealand) on 09/13/2023

Hi Joan,

Potassium chloride and sodium bicarbonate won't react to give you potassium bicarbonate.

I buy food grade potassium bicarbonate from a local source "The Sourcery" which is much cheaper than suppliers I find on eBay or Amazon.

The Sourcery - Potassium Bicarbonate

Every morning I mix 8 gm of potassium bicarbonate and 9 gm of vit C powder with more than half cup of water, and drink the whole lot in one go.

9 grams of vitamin C is my "bowel tolerance", to me about 15 minutes after consuming I will have to use the toilet once, and twice at most within the whole morning.

I was surprised that you made no mention as to how important Mg+ is in dealing with high blood pressure.

There is much research and information out there as to this health issue of blood pressure. I read one book from 2004 titled, "The Magnesium Solution", by Jay S. Cohen, MD and then discovered just how many books have been published with information on how well magnesium etc. supplements have saved the lives of many. I purchased this small book and was amazed at how informative it was. You may want to delve into the huge amount of literature there is out there concerning the advantages of Mg+ along with K+, Ca+ et al since your site supports nutritionally educating the public.

There is also a site titled, 'MedicationSense.com mentioned in said book as well.

Kind regards. Elaine

Salt
Posted by Joanna S. (New Orleans) on 09/29/2018

Interesting post, thank you. The few times my blood pressure has skyrocketed to scary levels have been after eating out and never at home. About 5 years ago I had a burrito in a supposedly healthy fast food Mexican restaurant and 30 minutes later my heart was pounding out of chest for the next 24 hours. I never went back but always thought the extra salt must have been the culprit! However, I too eat frozen pizzas at home from time to time and never have issues. So now I'm thinking the restaurant added some additional ingredients besides salt to that crazy burrito like sugar.. their signs said "no MSG ever", so I ruled that out, but who knows...

I just want to clear up that I bought the pizza to see the effect of sodium on my bp. I stay clear of all flour and sugar products. Basically I cook with and eat foods in its natural state using salt as a seasoning. And believe me I enjoy eating. :)

Exercise
Posted by Marie (Batavia, Ny) on 04/02/2016

Yeah I read that lots of water helps. I hate water and I drink like a half qt a day, but am pushing myself more lately trying to drink hibiscus tea 3x a day supposed to help lower it. Seems that most stuff does not work on me. I have tried every natural thing in the bk. I am now taking a half tab lisinopril once or twice a day. I keep checking the bl pr. If it's under 135/85 I don't take another half pill. I am recently drinking the acv. I am ok this wk now, but last wk I had to go to ER because at nite I was 195/116. I was freaking out. At hosp the highest was 170/100 and the lowest was 155/88. Since then taking half pill and acv.

Oh, and then while I was laying still on the table (they called it a "stretcher" which freaked me out more) I had a full blown panic attack. I started trembling all over real bad. I counted the minutes and it lasted 20 min which is what they typically do. Have not had a panic attack in a yr, but I was freaking out.

On the blood pressure paper for the machine it says to wait 4-5 min before taking blood pressure again because the veins need to get back to normal or the low reading will not be accurate. I wait 5-7 min but usually take bl pr 7-10 x a day to see if pill and/or Apple Cider Vinegar is working. Not sure yet, but at least am out of the woods. I am older like 65, only ten lbs over weight, but lost 4. Go get a mini trampoline and bounce gently for 20 min a day. Helps blood pressure. Even doc at hosp said to exercise and it would help lower bl pr. Cheap ones are available, but I have a good one cost $200. Do it 20-30 min 4 days a wk. Back hurts so can't do longer. At 20 min the lymph nodes clear out so it helps the immunity.

Deep Breathing
Posted by Robert Henry (Ten Mile, Tn.) on 08/28/2015

HI U OLE PATOOTS DOIN, , , , , , , , , , , , a while back I watched one of Dr. Shallenbergers videos on breathing. Learned from him that you should breath less and deeper using your diaphragm. I have always had a high pulse rate in the 80's and years ago had blackouts, which doctors said I was hyperventilating. I thought that was just bull but took their drugs to prevent and is the reason I now have osteoporosis and the reason a simple fall in '14 crushed my T 12 vertebrae.

Yesterday while waiting for the doctor to show up, because hospitals will not do a stress test unless a doctor is available. There I was, all hooked up, bored, and just watching the monitor. I decided to play a game. I began to change my breathing to see how that affected my pulse rate. Amazing, as Dr Shallenberger was right on point. I spent about 45 minutes raising and lowering my pulse rate just by the way I was breathing. I was able to take it down to the 60's or up to the 80's.

I guess this is what is known as bio-feed back.

I now think that the way we breathe is important to our overall health. Yep, you have to get oxygen, but you also have to maintain a certain amount of CO2 and you do that by breathing slower. I am just smart enough on this subject to be dangerous.

What is my point? The way you breath affects your overall health and I can't help you........... so READ.

To everyone: My BP tonite was 158/96. I immediately drank water with one heaping tsp of Calm magnesium powder. Now, it's 135/83. That's a huge decrease!

I've ordered Magnesium Glycinate, because Calm is Citrate which will soften the stools too much. The Glycinate supposedly doesn't.

Olive Leaf

To reduce blood pressure, take Olive Leaf Extract in liquid form and after about 3 weeks you will see a major drop. It will cure the high blood pressure, unless its another ailment causing the high blood pressure such as something stressful your body is fighting off. But google olive leaf extract. It works. I PROMISE. Also, hawthorn extract stabilizes the blood pressure once its down. Garlic is also great for blood pressure and reducing cholesterol buildup. Raw garlic is the best. I chop up a clove each day and drink it with milk (I swallow the chopped up pieces like pills). Then I take liquid chlorophyll, which acts as an internal deodorizer. I hope this helps.

P.S. My friend had been on medication for 30 years for high blood pressure. After taking the liquid olive leaf extract every day as directed, he was off the medication after 3 weeks and has been off of it ever since. He continues to take it. That is only one person I saw cured.

My blood pressure has been dangerously high this week. I am on lisinopril, hydrazaline and hydrochlorathiazide with no response. I used ACV and baking soda this morning and my blood pressure dropped from 192/75 to 175/80 within a few hours. None of the prescribed medication brought it below 200 this week. My age is 75, I am diabetic and hepatitis C positive. No side effects from this remedy so far.

I have posted the following link a couple of times here on EC : http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18268065

I was wondering if there is any way it can be posted in the scrollable column for hypertension under either Arginine or NAC or both. When I look, there is no listing for arginine or nac, but I have posted it at least three times on the forum in reply to people who are looking to relieve their hypertension naturally. The last time I posted it was yesterday August 23,2014. It is a very effective and cheap protocol to relieve hypertension and it has other significant health benefits.

Thank you! Art

Hi Michael,

The best supplement I have found for hypertension is Carditone which is working very well for myself and some friends. Like everything, it probably won't work for everyone, but I found, for my friends and myself, that it did better than NAC/Arginine/Lysine, prescription medication, beet root powder, magnesium/potassium and others. I wrote about it here :

Lemongrass Essential Oil

Hi, I started using lemongrass essential oil for my high blood pressure. I put a drop on my wrist and rub it on the other wrist and then I put a small bit of coconut oil on my heart area and one drop on lemongrass oil. The lemongrass oil may burn sensitive skin, but the coconut oil stops the burn. I have high blood pressure and I did this 1 hour before my Dr appt, my BP was 118/80. I am convinced that this is the reason my pressure was normal.

Hello Buffy,

Re the high blood pressure issue...

Even though you two are eating good food sources and largely vegetarian, even a vegetarian diet might not be getting enough natural (not synthetic) vitamin E.

So if me, to unclog marginal blockage I'd get on Natural E (d alpha tocopherol) for two months. Also I'd add on Magnesium and Potassium.

I'd start at 200 IUs per day for two weeks and increase to 400 and then in two more weeks increase to 600. Vitamin E will slick down blood platelets and veins and arteries so plaque will not build so readily and E is an oxygenator and natural blood thinner. So if on aspirin, I'd get off the aspirin after a few weeks on E.

If my blood pressure did not start coming down with those three then I'd start up on Arginine.

In none of these work I'd think that perhaps a fungal infection was at work. A Live Cell Microscopy would tell if fungus was in the blood stream beyond the norm...Fungus can give off a by product that forms a plaque and that plaque might be overcoming the Vitamin E and all the good vegetable consumption you are doing.

Old post but my ankles got swollen when I was living on aspirin, antacids, and coffee. Quit that and they are no longe swollen. But a bit stiff and numb. Garlic and onion powder both do wonders for that. Peanuts and niacinamide (the flushing kind), too. Possibly too much aluminum or kidney damage from the aspirin? Dunno.

Bee, you're doing well. Doctors are not especially compassionate these days and haven't been for many years... It was different in the 50's and 60's...You know how you feel. If he or she doesn't believe it, get another doctor or stay tuned to Earth Clinic which is an HMO for a lot of people...Good luck and btw Atenolol IS a beta blocker...

My son-in-laws blood pressure was never any lower than 190 over 110. After drinking one glass of eggplant water for about a week it went to 135 over 90. He has been drinking the water and sometimes taking the eggplant capsules. He learned of this remedy from a man while waiting in the doctor's office. After struggling with taking two bp meds he is totally blown away with this simple remedy.

Medication Weaning
Posted by Tony (Tn, Usa) on 01/22/2014

Hello Kelly from Ma:

I too suffer from hypertension. Have been for over 2 years now. Been on prescription BP medicine for about 5 months now. I put it off for over 1 1/2 year. I was taking two 10 mg propanalol tabs per day to start. I have been able to cut that back to one 10 mg pill per day.

Let me tell you how I've been able to do that. The recommended supplements I would suggest are both niacin & magnesium. Also, possibly taking medicinal mushrooms. I take all 3 of these now. My BP is doing fine now & soon I should be able to completely go off the propanalol.

Let me say this isn't a quick fix by no means. That's the way natural supplementation works though. Your BP medicine is only covering up what's really wrong. I had renal failure myself back in April of 2012. I was put on BP back then but didn't want to take it so I put it off. We have to get our BP under control no matter what. It's dangerous to not get it under control. However, BP meds like all meds just cover up/delay the inevitable. They also have side effects like most meds.

One other thing you could try is Olive Leaf Extract. I take it on a rotation schedule of herbs for my candida condition. It also helps to lower BP. Don't take them all 4 at the same though. Try the niacin and magnesium first. I would suggest a dose of 1, 000 mg niacin daily in split doses & 250-500 mg magnesium. Take these for at least a month or 2. Check your BP every other day or so to keep an eye on it.

You will see a reduction in BP but not a fast fix. If the niacin and magnesium doesn't work try the Olive Leaf Extract and medicinal mushrooms combo. The medicinal mushrooms are strong immune boosters as well. Only look for buying medicinal mushrooms that are hot water extracted though. Don't buy any other type! A couple of brands are Paradise Herbs & Mushroom Science. These are really the only 2 companies that produced true hot water extracted mushrooms.

The Olive Leaf dose is different for each person. If the olive leaf dose contains 30 mg Oleuropein(check back label) take 4-6 capsules daily with food in split doses.

Keep us posted on your status. Also, feel free to ask more questions if needed. God Bless & hope your BP gets under control with one of these methods!

Dear Bee,

Well, here are my two cents worth of rambling...we have been blessed to have some doctors over the years who do indeed care and are not all about $. When we lived in KY there was a family doctor in town that only charged $40 for a visit and didn't even charge that if you couldn't pay. He was puzzled by the symptoms one of my children had a number of years ago (on and off fever for a long time and swollen lymph nodes.) He called me on his day off to ask if we had cats. Turns out my son had cat scratch fever. (And I thought it was just a song! ) He really cared. He didn't know anything about natural medicine, but he was helpful to us in diagnosing things at times. Sadly, we have had more dealings with doctors who really didn't care or were not open to alternative treatments. Once I saw a doctor and the first things she said was "You are not on any prescription medication! " She promptly wrote me two prescriptions for I don't recall what as I threw them away.

So, I don't know if you should go to this person. It troubles me that medical help is so expensive. I have more positive results in improving the health of my family through implementing what I have learned on Earth Clinic and herb books than through the medical field. Though, I have needed medical services at times and have been grateful for that, especially when I have had good doctors and nurses. But when medical help is so expensive, and $300 for an office visit seems absurd to me, I worry that $ is the driving force in the practice and not that of helping people feel better.

My husband was having heart palpitations years ago and went to a heart doctor who put him on beta blockers. It was a low dose and he felt terrible on that. He went off them cold turkey (he hadn't been on them long and we didn't know any better.) He figured out that caffeine was the cause of the palpitations, so he went off that, too.

One option you have is to continue to read and study and try different things for your health. You have already found that diet and exercise and stress affect you...that is great knowledge.

Please keep us posted on what you try and how you are doing. We are all learning together here. I will pray that you have wisdom in your decisions!

It's a nobrainer about what you need to do. You can continue to take it and increase your chances of dying by 25% or you can gradually stop over a couple weeks and decrease your chances of dying by over 25%.

it's clear how you get off beta blockers. you can save $300 and do it yourself or pay $300 and have someone tell you the same thing.

Dear Bee:

I have thought long about your post here on EC. There are no integrative doctors - they are allopathic doctors trained by Big Pharma to sell their wares. Some doctors hear their voice of conscience and try to help patients according to their inner promptings. However, if found out in not prescribing a max of meds, they will receive a warning. So many are working while silencing their conscience as it would mean a negation of all that had been washed into their brains, which they did not question boot.

Allopathy teaches about sickness and not WELLNESS

Allopathy treats your eye, foot, stomach; NOT THE WHOLE PERSON

Allopathy admits of a mind and seeks to alter it

Allopathy seeks to dominate a mind with chemicals but

IGNORES MAN'S SOUL

You and I as a human being have the gift of intuition. You live in this body and you alone can take responsibility for your health.

A doctor is a stranger. In a few minutes he can cause a lot of damage to your health by allowing so many minutes and then "next one please".

He has in mind how his earnings will be and many doctors vie among themselves who makes the most. They are obsessed with their salaries.

Much more could be said, but the choice is up to you. You have as a faculty discrimination and awareness which can be sharpened by practice and experimentation.

The main point is that chemicals and plant colloidal chemicals are a world apart. For one thing, they do not work well together and cause more damage creating a chaotic picture. And when money is the main object and not the well being of man, BEWARE. Love, Om

I don't like the side effects from my blood pressure medications. Does anyone know if the Apple Cider Vinegar capsules would give me the same problems? (diarrhea) Thanks for the help.

Jolole: It seems you may also be suffering Cholestasis or gallstones. This condition can cause acidosis, constipation, and hypertension. A gallbladder cleanse would be helpful. Natural remedies to increase bile flow like Dandelion Root, Burdock Root, and Yellowdock Root will help. Also drink lemon water daily (this almost always works for me; I use lemon juice concentrate and filtered water).

Hope this helps.

Food Allergies
Posted by Dallas (Amesbury, Ma Usa) on 11/14/2012

I normally have normal to low blood pressure. But a few years ago, it started to spike higher and higher each day. I will attest to the fact that cardiovascular exercise did help temporarily for me, but not much else did. One day, I ended up in hospital due to very high blood pressure, pounding headache, pounding, racing heart etc. I asked the Dr. If it could be food allergies and he looked at me like I had two heads and said "schedule a physical. " What- and wait 6 months while I suffer ever escalating blood pressure and deadly symptoms each night?! I don't think so. I went to a naturopath who also thought "food allergies" and did some testing (blood tests). She found I was allergic to about 1/3 of food items I regularly ate. I dropped (with difficulty) those items from my diet and my blood pressure gradually came down back to low normal.
