I'tried Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) for my very painful throat and was pleased at the result (after the initial 2 minute breaking period). I believe it is the production of saliva and mucus that it enhances that is actually at work. I have supported this theory by using other astringic liquids; Listerine (gargle), orange juice and they work also. I now actively promote swallowing of saliva whenever possible. I have also started the old tradition of taking a walk after meals which seems to help the digestion. The concentration of ACV that I take is very small, just enough to promote mucus formation. Try other fruit juices and see if they work for you. Oh, and don't sit still for too long!

Apple cider vinegar as a cure for acid reflux is a miracle. I've had reflux for years and have tried everything, you name it. My sister told me about ACV. It worked within 10 minutes. What a blessing. To hell with those greedy pharmaceutical companies. They should be ashamed of themselves.

I have been having a problem with reflux for several years now. I had been on prescription meds, but after seeing side effects others had listed online, I never stayed on them very long. I was also having severe anxiety problems where I felt like I couldn't breathe, felt nauseated, hot and all at very random times. I had tried ACV once before with terrible results. Earlier this week, I had the worst reflux burning I'd ever had and was about to succumb to the "purple pill" once again. I got on this site and read all the testimonials on ACV and decided that with how bad I was feeling, I might as well give it a try once again. I didn't have the organic kind with "the mother", so I just tried the regular. In about an hour, I realized that I didn't have ANY burning, pain or the sensation of anything coming back up. I slept like a baby and without keeping a cough drop in my cheek for the first time in...waaaay too long...years, probably. I have been using it for three days now and I cannot believe what a difference it has made! I didn't realize how disruptive my reflux was! I have not had any of those old anxiety feelings whatsoever since ACV! I believe it was all connected to the reflux. I have been more relaxed and don't have to feel panicky when I am out, having that nauseated, can't-breathe feeling. I have been enjoying life more and time with my little boy doesn't feel rushed, with me trying to "keep it all together". What a miracle! I will continue the ACV and spread the word! Thanks to this site and to all who have put their testimonials on here...I never would have tried it if it weren't for you!

I tried Prilosec for the required 14 days, the next day it was worse then when I started, then I tried an off brand made in Israel it worked for 14 days, but my relux came back. So a guy at work was telling me about Apple cider vinegar, we had the Trader Joe's with the mother and I fiqured I'd give it a chance. I started with 2 tablespoons in 8 oz. of water at breakfast, lunch and dinner, I quit taking green tea in my thermos and started taking ACV and honey to sip on all day, I'll have to say I am a believer, I have no signs of reflux at all, plus drinking this I'm starting to feel better over all. I am going to add some cayenne to help with overall health. It's nice to know that a natural, God breathed apple can heal the body. Have a great day and God Bless

I have severe GERD and haven't yet tried the acv treatment, but was previously prescribed Nexium which gave me a severe migraine. I have since been taking Prevacid which works much better.

I was on a medicine called Aciphex and loved it. I had no issues with side effects. I'm now on Nexium because my insurance decided not to pay for the Aciphex anymore. I'm not as pleased with Nexium and try to avoid taking it unless my symptoms become severe. Otherwise I use over the counter stuff, and that doesn't seem to always work either. I'm going to try the ACV to see if it helps.

You take apple cider vinegar before coffee. Did you know coffee causes reflux? What is your diet? Always look for low fat foods, little or no sugar. Reduce alcohol.

Casey, you said you had severe pressure in your chest... was it more the center of the chest or under your left rib cage... I am experiencing major pressure under left rib cage and the drugs, ACV, etc. seem to be doing nothing. This is only my first day using ACV, so I will give it more time. Thanks.

Hello, in answer to your pressure in the chest issue... I have esophageal cancer and a hernia, I also get the pressure in the chest and it seems to be related to the early digestive process. I strongly urge you to try sitting up straight to take pressure off the stomach, and try to breathe deeply. Tums may help some, but I found it really didn't get to the pressure area. I think you need to speak with your DR on this, make sure that the pressure is not from a twist in the intestines or hernia.

Eating right and staying away from coffee is also important. (Take it from me, black coffee is not your friend).

Some of the earliest signs of cancer go undetected because today's society makes indigestion as common a reference as overeating. But it IS serious, and can make your life painfully change if you do not address the situation medically. If you have not been to the doctor, go. The pressure in my chest is what caused me to go, and although it was from air in the herniated area of the stomach (where it comes into the chest cavity) I would never have caught the cancer until it was deadly. Don't take unnecessary risks with your life. It is too short as it is.

In July, 2007, I had pleurisy; that's when I discovered that my body rejects antibiotics [belching, nausea, couldn't sleep, eat, think]. After 3 different antibiotics, I cut out every med, slept for 16 hrs, 12 hrs the next 2 days, and began to eat light, organic broth to complete healing -- almost. Since then, I've suffered from what finally has been diagnosed as Acid Reflux. It was the 3d doctor, my dentist, who "got my attention" about this diagnosis, when he told me that the acid had stripped my front teeth of all their enamel!!! "Handle the Acid Reflux before you come back to take care of your teeth, or you will be spending your money for nothing".

Has anyone else with AR experienced this? I am THRILLED to have found this website, began eating apple slices and using the ACV this morning, along with Calc Phos, Nat Phos and Stomach Calm per my nutritionist. When I told her about the 3 recent medical diagnoses [after I had tested "negative" for AR this past summer with her], I asked, "How do I deal with this conflicting evidence?" TRUST YOUR BODY, she said. What an AHA moment that was! Thanks, Sheila

Dean, When you say you got scoped and your "throat looked bad" what do you mean. I am a singer, missing some of my normal range and resiliancy, so I got scoped. I was told I had Acid Reflux and it's irritating my larynx. It would be helpful to know more about what you feel in your throat. I suffer hoarseness, gravely sounds, and a mild feeling of a sore throat always. Thanks!

Hi, I have had acid reflux for many years, I just started to get breakthru HB, my omeprazole stopped working and the Dr. tried a few other meds, that started to give me diarrhea. I discovered this site about 4 days ago, I stopped the meds and am trying to do the ACV w/the mother. I am on my 4th day and the acid is still not gone. I started with 1 tbs, in a small amount of water 3x a day, for the first 3 days, then discover that I was suppose to be mixing it with a 8 oz glass of water. I started that and still have the HB. How long should it take to start working. I realize that bad acid reflux, for 7 or so years might take some time to clear up, but most people seemed to have much quicker results then I have had. Any help would be much appreciated.

EC: HB = Heartburn

To Robert from Toronto: To answer the why? It is called job security, if the doctors told you that ACV would solve the acid indigestion problem, you would not keep coming back for another prescription. Another thing to consider is that the strongest union of all, the AMA, will try to put any doctor recommending anything they can't control will try to put them out of business.

I have been taking acid reflux medication for over five years.I found this website near the end of June and decided to try it. I started out taking ACV twice a day for two weeks then switched to one Golden Delicious apple a day. I have now been off the medications for two months. I am forever in debt to this website.

Thank you.

I have been using ACV (Apple Cider Vinegar) for acid reflux for over 2 years. I started having reflux after I had a sore foot and was prescribed 600 mg of Ibuprofin 3 x daily. prior to that time I could eat anything. After a couple of weeks of the large dose of Ibuprofin I could not eat anything without severe Reflux. After using antacids for a long time I tried 2 TBS. per 8oz ACV to Water 1/2 hour prior to eating. It worked better than all of the antacids to releive the symptoms and the reflux slowly went away.

DISAGREEMENT, DISAGREEMENT! To James from Houston: Acid Reflex can be on different levels. I have been told that some people produce an overabundance of acid and some do not produce enough. I myself have an acid reflex issue, due to a Hiatal Hernia. Vinegar works for me as my doctor has indicated that my stomach does not produce enough acid. Taking vinegar and relieving my reflex would make sense. I no longer take Nexium, due to side effects and use vinegar or nothing at all. I have tried changing my diet, but nothing seems to work. I try not to eat late evening as it is very difficult to sleep. I have used Cider Vinegar and Vinegar. Both work for me. The after taste is somewhat of an annoyance, but it is worth it.

Response to James from Houston: I'm a nursing student. My mom always drinks pickle juice when she has heart burn and reflux, which is obviously vinagar. Anyway, I could never understand that considering vinagar is acidic, right? Well, I asked my professor how pickle juice works. He told me that when you add MORE acids to the stomach, the acid pumps in the stomach turn off because no more acid is needed. However, when you take antacids, the antacids desolve the acid that's presently in the stomach to provide quick relief, but then the stomach quickly turns the pumps on to replenish the acids. And you may notice that after a few weeks, just one antacid no longer does the trick. You need two or three to get the same relief because your stomach pumps are working overtime to replenish those lost acids. The moral of this story? It's healthier and safer to add more acids to the stomach to naturally turn off those acid pumps than it is to take away those much needed acids from the stomach. Vinagar, or pickle juice, is a better choice.

The person who said do not take ACV-it doesn't make sense, may have a highschool education about acids and bases, but he does not understand medical things very well. What is Prevacid? It helps to slow down or stop the pumps. It's the same concept as, putting oil on your skin. If you continually put oil on your skin, your oil glands will slow down or quit producing the natural oils. If you ingest Vinegar, your body will tell the stomach to produce less acid. IT WORKS! I used to have Acid Reflux so bad, I took 1 or 2 30 mg pills of Prevacid every day. But, it's chemical and not natural. A friend in Europe told me to take the ACV. I did 1 tablespoon of ACV with 1 Tablespoon of water 2-3 times a day. After some time, I only needed it 2 times a day, then once a day. Then I went a LONG time not needing it again. So that meant NO pills for my body to filter through and my body actually stabilized on it's own from something natural. Now, I only need it if I am an idiot and eat a lot of deep fried foods and such. So yes, it's great! I agree you must be careful about your teeth as the acid can eat the enamel; it does have a high acid pH. But the thing of it is, you do not have to do it ALL the time, only until you get the acid under control. Now I only need to take ACV once every 6-8 weeks-less or more, depending on my diet and stress. But there have been times I can go months witout touching the stuff. And you get some Vitamin C and antioxidants. And just think, it saved the soldiers from scurvy and mouth bacteria and lots of ailments in George Washington's day! There IS something to old remedies, as long as they are not just silliness. When it's telling you to do weird things, you know it's bologna. But simple things, are very accurate and cheaper and healthier! It's a win-win-win situation.

Baking soda does relieve acid reflux the best, but also causes rebound acidity shortly after.

I have some questions. I have acid reflux. I am also a singer so this is a curse. I have been trying the acv for nearly a week now (despite the awful taste) and hoping for a miracle. How long does it take to see results? I have been diluting it in cranberry juice and taking 2 TB 2x daily. If anyone has any ideas to improve the taste, by all means. It is really hard to swallow this stuff. I gag each time. Also, is adding the baking soda dangerous for people with high blood pressure? I have read pickle juice is also effective for people. Has anyone (particularily singers) had any luck with this? Are the health benefits the same for white vinegar and acv? Any info provided would be much appreciated.

John from Jackson FL. is right. Don't drink the ACV with cranberry joice. That is one of the beverages you should avoid on the Acid Reflux diet. Drink it with honey. I usually have it like a hot tea. Mix 1tsp of ACV and 1tsp of raw honey and enjoy every morning and evening. Then through out the day I add a tsp of ACV to my bottle water and just sip a small amount.

I have not tried apple cider vinegar, but I have used normal vinegar, and it stopped my acid reflux for weeks. I also have a theory about why vinegar works. Whatever produces the acid in a persons stomach, for some reason, unknown to me, decides that a persons stomach needs more acid, so it produces more. I think when you add vinegar to your stomach, the thing in your stomach will stop producing acid because it knows that you are getting it somewhere else ... just a theory...

I came across your web page a couple of weeks ago. I have been on acid reflux medication for 10+ years (nexium, omeprazol, etc.). I decided to give ACV a try - I bought organic with "mother". At first I used 2 teaspoons of ACV in a glass of water (I was surpriesd the taste is OK) twice a day but I still had heart burn during the day. I increased to 2 TABLEspoons of ACV in a glass of water twice a day and it seem to be the right amount. I still experienced some minor heartburn in the late afternoon but I treated this eating an apple. Since I intruduced the apple for minor heartburn I have been free of acid reflux symptoms. From my experience, the amount and frequency of ACV needed is determined by trial and error. I feel very confident on the effectivness of ACV and I am gladd to be of the acid suppression medications.

Apple Cider Vinegar has been a miracle for my mother. She has been suffering terribly from acid reflux and it was so bad the other night she felt like she could not breath. She has tried every medication over the counter and prescription and nothing has worked. She was desperate, so I thought I would look up some natural cures and found this site. I called her right away and told her about the apple cider vinegar. She tried it right away and she could not believe it. She said immediatley her throat felt better and she slept all night for the first time in weeks. She took it agian today and said she still feels great. She said she has not even taken a pill today. She used 8oz of water and a Tb. Apple cider Vinegar and a pinch of baking soda. Thanks for this site. Its a life saver. Debbie

ACV cured my stomach pain. thanks to this site. My history follows: I am on Protonix(PPI)since my diagnosis of gastrix reflux. I have been scoped and my throat looks bad. My pain is contolled as long as I dont eat junk foods, foods in boxes, bags, etc. No alcohol or chocolate. The problem sneaks up on me when I cheat, some crackers, corn chips, etc. It doesnt take much,,, then I am in huge break through pain. Unrelenting pain that zaps your strength. I can max out on rolaids or gaviscon..without relief. Seems as tho the alkaline products don't help me one bit. Last night (after eating a no cheese, no meat mexican veg fahita and 2 hand fuls of corn chips, no alcohol), I was in massive, unrelenting pain that woke me up at 1 am, could not sleep, found your site at 2:30 am. Took 2 tbls of B__gs organic ACV. Felt a little odd at first, but no worse. So I took a second dose of ACV and By 3am I was pain free. Took a while to get to sleep as I was so keyed up from the pain. I write this to encourage others, seems as tho some are helped by acidic products such as ACV, mustard, pickle juice, olive juice, etc)

I am also a singer who suffers from a hoarse voice apparently from acid reflux. I have recently started taking cider vinegar and havent had medication for two weeks. I have to watch what I eat ,chilli's are a no go and I have cut back on coffee. I find yogurt is soothing but the acv seems to be working as well or better than what the medication did.

In Australia 1 in 3 people over 50 suffers from reflux ...I feel mine may have been stress related, so probably its time to start a bit of yoga and meditation to help keep the stress in some sort of relative order.
