[YEA] 03/01/2009: Collene from Detroit, MI writes: "I have been experiencing BV for several years now and have continuously gone thru the CONSTANT cycle of taking the prescribed meds for it. Its just one big cycle. I swear I think the doctors arent concerned and don't care about prescribing a permanent solution because it keeps you spending money with them and keeps the drug companies' pockets fat! To boot, My doctor would say things to make me feel like a filthy whore because I kept coming back with same symptons. I felt judged every time I had to make an appointment and dreaded it. I didn't have multiple partners and I used condoms and would still get it. I was fine as long as I didn't have sex after taking the meds. As soon as I would have sex, it would come back. In 2007 I simply stopped having sex. In 2008 I couldn't deal w/that anymore either and the BV cycle started all over again. That is the most embarrassing smell in the world for a woman. It makes me feel extremely filthy! I am determined to find something that works permanently. I have been taking 50B Lactobacillus for a week and am going to try the suggestions on this site. I felt I was the only one dealing with this. Here goes!"
Replies09/28/2010: Ladawna from Oak Ridge, Tn replies: "I have also felt like the only woman who has experienced this. I didn't notice I had that bad of a problem (I just thought I was a little stronger smelling then most... ) until my boyfriend pretty much quit having sex with me. When I asked him why, he said it was because I had a smelly Vag (he didn't say it like that though haha). I was mortified and honestly completely embarrassed about this situation!!! I just recently tried the peroxide (and it really does have an instant response) now I'm just waiting for the results. I take folic acid and will be getting the acidophilus soon to see how well this works. I'm going to be absolutely ecstatic to once again not be worried about the way that I smell. And to have my boyfriend enjoy it as well!!! I will be updating in 3 days - 1 week to tell everyone how it works out!!!"

02/23/2009: Jessica from Ledbetter, KY writes: "I believe that I self diagnosed myself with bv, however, I am not sure. I always felt like i had a bad vag odor even from childhood. But, then in high school I met my now husband, and after any thing sexual I started having terrible odor and burning. THen when we started having sex using a condom, I only had terrible burning and discomfort. Then we stopped using protection and he would ejaculate inside me the smell was terrible, i mean horrible, immediately. I am 23 now and the prob keeps getting worse. There is a smell all the time, but, after intercourse it is AWFUL. I am not sure what to do anymore. Does my husband or his semen have anything to do with this. I have tried all of the remedies on this site. Nothing worked, due to these humiliating side effects I have not been to a gyn in years. The first last and only pap smear came back showing that I had a huge amount of yeast and the doctor told me to treat that with an otc med. But, she told me I must have been having symptoms, but I was not having any out of the normal. And after yeast inf meds nothing changed, the smell and everything else down there is so embarassing, I have not made another dr appt. I do not know what else to do. Does anyone have any other solutions or ideas. My husband is very understanding and has helped in every way. I am sick and tired of dealing with this. I have been diagnosed with Polycystic ovarian Syndrome, and have not had periods in several years. I have found nothing connecting the two but I am curious if anyone else has this or any of these similar things. Also my vag always looks red and irritated is this common? Someone please help me and feel free to contact me cpk823@live.com "

02/26/2009: Marlee from Los Angeles, CA USA replies: "Jessica,
I understand if you don't want to go to the doctor but #1 You should be sure what it is first. Bacterial Vaginosis smells like fish or strong cheese, there can be discharge ranging from clear, white, yellow, green-grayish, the more color the more bacteria. The smell definitely is from the bacteria, the normal "friendly flora" we have does not smell. If you have researched this from the many online sources you may be correct that you have BV, it could be Trichomonas though.
What most of the articles, although informative, DO not TELL you is THAT MEN CARRY and spread these unfriendly bacteria. YOUR husband needs to be checked by direct urethral swab. IT is possible that you can get this unbalanced bacterial situation from bad hygiene, but you would have to run around pretty sweaty, damp and with tight clothes, unnatural fabrics that don't breathe or a wet bathing suit or tampon for way to long, then have sex so the bacteria from out side gets pushed inside. Unless you are a real slob then you probably got it from a man. I got a terrible case from my boyfriend. Here is my experience and what I learned from this experience:
I noticed that my new boyfriend smelled bad 'down there". It was summer so I thought , sweaty, don't worry and I didn't want to embarrass him or ruin the moment by telling him to wash. With in a few weeks of this I started to smell bad and I NEVER have had any bad smell at all in all my 47 years. I knew of Gardnerella, the former name for BV, so I smelled his semen too to make sure that it came from him, it reeked so I told the BF that we had to get checked out, and he did test positive as did I. We took the antibiotics and assumed it was gone as we didn't smell. Then a few weeks later his semen smelled again, then 4 days later I smelled again. he took the antibiotics again and I did Hydrogen Peroxide, I don't like to take drugs. No smell again for a few weeks but it came back again so we did the antibiotics again and I INSISTED on a re check to make sure it was gone this time, the nurse on duty that day thought I was crazy but I wasn't taking a chance again, I checked out clear, NO BV in me. The clinic that my BF went to did a urine test only on him (may not be enough bacteria coming out in urine to show), not the swab and said he was clear but he had a yeast infection from taking the antibiotics (yes men do get this too and can pass it to you) So I was clear and I hoped he was clear (but used condoms just in case, didn't work see below on condoms) he didn't want that swab up there again, not fun for guys, well boo hoo because he was not clear and gave it to me yet again. At this point "my" nurse told me that HE must have a resistant case and has probably had it a long time. I questioned my BF, "Did you smell this when you were with your ex before you were with me ? YES he did AND he said his pee smelled also ! I asked him if he knew that smell was not normal and he didn't know, thought it was nothing to be concerned about and like many uninformed guys think that women smell like fish anyway, you know those awful "Tuna" jokes. MEN can get this from a woman who has it because, not to be crass, but by rubbing his dick against bacteria laden vaginal walls the bacteria gets inside his urethra and STICKS to the skin cells in there and also sheds into his semen and possibly urine, though more in the semen with force of ejaculation, follow ? Then he gets a new girl and gives it to her. He did have it for a long time before we got together so he had to take antibiotics 4 times to clear it.
HERE'S WHAT HAPPENS, We have a natural balance of good and bad bacteria, usually if we are healthy and clean, eat a good diet (preferably with out acid forming foods such as meats, cheese, eggs, dairy, SUGAR, white flour products and refined/junk foods that promote bacterial growth) then we can maintain proper pH balance and have enough good bacteria in our system to kill off any invaders and not be overtaken by bad bacteria. HOWEVER IF your partner is infected with too MANY bad bacteria (or you happen to get them on/in you otherwise) and passes them to you, these "bad" bacteria will kill off your "good" bacteria, move in, raise your pH (normal vaginal pH is acid to kill bacteria) to their liking (they produce amines, that smell and change the pH to alkaline) and live in you and you two will both have this back and forth forever. Note some people can have this at a level where they don't smell but still have enough bad bacteria to upset your particular balance and infect you, so if it smells stay away but know that it can be there w/o smell too. You can test your pH with litmus paper, a little roll with a pH chart on it, (normal vag. fluid shows yellow on the paper-acid,good. If it's turning green or blue it's bacteria- alkaline, not good). get at health food store or recently some kind of vaginal pH test has been advertised on TV, if you can find that in the drug store ?
SO what you must do is get clear, take the antibiotics if you must, no alcohol or vinegar while on them !!! may not work and can make you sick. DO NOT have sex, (even with a condom as some pre ejaculate can leak out with movement or be on him before he puts it on and it gets on his hand then on the condom, I got it this way also) until you are both certified clear. Also, you can get it from uncircumcised men easier as they can get bacterial growth under the foreskin. Regardless both partners should wash and dry thoroughly before and after sex anyway so any potentially infection causing bacteria will be washed away and not have the chance to get up in side either of you. Also AFTER taking the antibiotics and probably yeast medication, as the antibiotics kill of your good bacteria too and allow yeast to over grow, YOU both NEED to take PROBIOTICS, a good multi, OPTIMA,or MEGAFLORA that have many types of healthy flora including the acidolphilis etc. This will restore the healthy flora that the antibiotics kill in your system. Rhamnosis and Rueteri are supposedly good for vaginal health, you can pop these capsules directly up there to stop yeast and restore your flora after you clear the infection.
Last word, Good luck and about that ovary problem, I had enlarged left ovary for years, doctor said it was normal, lots of women have that, bullshit, NOT normal !! I resolved it by changing to a balanced Macrobiotic diet, way of eating naturally and this ovary has been fine since as well as several other health issues that are no more, in fact I have not been sick in 17 years since changing to this Macrobiotic lifestyle, except for the lovely infusion of nasty BV that my dear BF gave me which upset my own balance for a while but it is over and I'm healthy w/o smell and normal vaginal pH. I encourage you to study and try macrobiotics, GOMF.org is a good place to start, you can get healthy, feel great and resolve the ovarian problem, get your balance back and your periods. i hope this is helpful for you as i got this BV and didn't know how, if I was so healthy and I was never ill, how I got it, why it "got me" so it made me do lots of research to find out more than "you got this from your underwear or tampons" which was not the case as I found out, the gift of too many bad bacteria that over rode my own balance and led me to learn much more about this than is known even by doctors, mostly men who don't think "they" have anything to do with it. I dug deep found many studies showing it in men and found a lecture by a doctor in Texas who explained that it is a more serious thing than most MD's think, and he explained the facts of how the bacteria overtakes us and causes the imbalance, so don't necessarily believe those articles that say it's your fault that you are unbalanced or you have this due to bad hygiene or washing with soap or douching, although douching can upset your balance, If you are healthy you don't need to do this, the natural, normal clear, non smelly vaginal fluid discharge is there for self cleaning purpose.

My questions are about the treatment of males with this virus. Please e-mail me back so that we can be in communication with one another. I am literally at wits end with this thing and would really appreciate any and all advice you can offer. Thank you so much Sam-I-am"
10/01/2009: Kathy from Dubois, Pa replies: "This is a great response to the whole subject of BV because it is the first time I've ever seen anyone address the idea that an infected man can be the cause of a woman's BV problem. Usually the doctors assume poor hygine on the woman's part...you know, they assume the woman "wiped" back-to-front instead of front-to-back, or doesn't wash her hands, or because, as "everyone knows", women are just plain "DIRTY down there"...and their unconcious misogyny blocks their thinking, so that they can never get to the "root" of the problem (pardon the pun), which might be a man!
As for the men's health, surely it cannot be good for the poor dears to be harboring such a bacterial load! I wouldn't be surprized if a carrier of "BV germs" is that way because he has prostatitis (whether accute or cronic), which could lead to prostate cancer in later life."
12/29/2010: Loana from Houston, Tx Usa replies: "Thank you for this post. I never had BV until I got with my BF about 4 years ago. When we first started having sex I didn't notice any difference. We split up for several months (later I found out he had slept with someone else during that time). When we got back together and started having sex again, I noticed a foul odor with discharge from my vagina. I made several visits to the dr and kept getting treated for BV. I would get rid of it, then get it all over again. For a while I was back and forth between BV and yeast infections. It's horrible and embarrassing! He and I split up again almost a year ago. After that I haven't had any issues with BV or yeast. The smell has been gone and I've felt great. Recently, we started seeing each other again and having sex again. Guess what - the smell is back. The BV is back! I hate this and I know it's from him. It drives me crazy! I don't know what to do. I feel like if I'm with him I'll live the rest of my life with this issue."
03/28/2011: Olivia from Troy, Michigan replies: "wow this is some great information and I am having my boyfriend to my house tomarrow and I am going to read this whole page... Every article but especially yours with him... I have experienced this bv for years I am 29 y/o and it became a huge problem when I was with my ex my daughters father my first real boyfriend I was sexually active before him but when we got tohrther and it was just us together faithful we decided to stop using protection and no matter what everytime we had intercourse I would get bv b4 I could get rid of it it was right back. I thought whats wrong with me???? when I didnt have the infection there was absolutely NO SMELL AT ALL and right after sex one time hours later I smelled like fish... I felt dirty and like he must think I am not clean either.... Men dont understand it is the infection he would tell me things like clean it out up there wanted me to dousch take a shoer w me and he still couldnt bekueve I had an odor....Finally I found out I had cervical cancer cells and once I had sergery for that ad egab having sex again the bv went away I wasnt getting it nemore and I became pregnant w my daughter whom is npw 3 and a half the whole time I was pregnant I never once got bv.... Time went on and still I hadnt gotten bv.... Then when my daughter was about 1 y/o I started getting the infection again it started out every once in awhile until it was back "full time" I thought I had gotten cervical cancer cells again I brokw up w my daughters father and wasnt sexually active right away so the infection lessend but didnt completely stop then I started dateing someone new it didnt get serious so we used protection... It wasnt a problem and then I met my bf now we have been together a yr and we got seriouys almost right away and have not used condoms almost right away of course after std testing... Every single time we have sex I get the infection.... I have had a papsmere and everything came back fine no cancer cells no std's.... This infection is embarrassing and I wont even let him newhere close to that area when I have it. I tried to explain to him what it is and he has been very patient and understanding so b/c he knows I am getting bv when we have sex he thought by him pulling out nd not ejaculateing in me that would stop the infections....
About almost three wks ago is when he decided to not let any sperm get in my vagina and has been pulling out well... We were having sex for the first wk and it went okay and I didnt get the infection.... But then it came back. It was horrible I tried explaining to him when I tried to get an appointment w my doctor it would have taken 2 wks to get in so I made the appointment but time went on and I couldnt deal with it as the odor got stronger I decided to go to the er... Since the doctor doesnt know me or my history of bv and bc I was having unprotected sex he decided to treat me for everything this was yesterday, the doctor in the er said it would be newhere from a few days to a wk b$ all the cultures came back so he will treat me fpr basically all std's and write me a script for metro-gel n he call me if nething came back post. N to follow up w my doct. I know that it was bv but my bf is thinking bc he didnt ejaculate inside of me that I must be cheating o him and that it is an std.... I was trying to explain to him that it could be just from sex bacteria on him that I can get bv.... Well I went to fill my script and they had to order it and it wont b in untill tomarrow soetime, I couldnt stand this smell so I decided to try a dousch and or this product rephresh I dont know if ur familiar w that or not but its a tube and a gel u can buy it over the counter its supposed to balance your ph levels and eliminate feminine odor... Rephredh pro-b is a probiotic feminine supplement that is clinically shown to balance yeast and bacteria to maintain feminine health. It maintains a healthy vaginal ph level... Basiacally like u said we have a "good" bacteria and a "bad" bacteria and I have no splean so my immune syaytem is already low so I need something that can help me build up my good bacteria and and help my ph levels stay balanced the whole point of my story is nothing I have ever tried has ever worked besides flaygel in the gel form, not pills bc it nakes ne nauseatedwell the smell was horrible earlier today and I used a medicated dousch my sumers eve and after I used one appplication of rephresh and three hours later I used the bathroom and the odor was almost gone.... So I was thinking u ca use it everyday but one application lasts up to 72 hours, I was thinking to use one of those at least every three days but especially after intercourse.... I couldnt believe how it worked today so after I use my medication I was prescribed I am going to use that and I pray it will build up my good bacteria and will prevent from getting bgv and hopefully I can have a normal sex life with my boyfriend b/c this infection is seriously ruiing our relationship.... And my life, there has to be a treatment that can prevent ladies like ourselves from living w that odor...
It doesnt help either when DOCTORS ARE TELLING US THAT IT IS SOMETHING WE CANNOT GET FROM THE GUY THAT A MAN CANNOT HAVE THIS BACTERIAL INFECTION WYHEN IT DOESNT MAKE ANY SENSE IF A MAN HAS BEEN SLEEPING UNPROTECTED W A WOMAN WHO HAS IT WHY CANT HE BE A CARRIER AND WHY WOULDNT A DOCTOR TREAT A MAN FOR IT TO BE SURE THAT HE DPESNT PASS IT BACK N FORTH, ITS NOT FAIR THAT THEY MAKE US FEEL LIKE SOMETHING IS NASTY WITH YOU FO0R GETTING AND HAVING A INFECTION U CANT GET RID OF AND U ARE VERY CLEAN! I AM VERY CLEAN W MY BODY TAKE REALLY GOOD CARE OF MYSELF CLEAN VERY GOOD AND THERE IS NOTHING I CAN DO TO PREVENT THIS SO I AM VERY GLAD I READ THIS ARTICLE AND ALL THESE SUGGESTIONS AND I AM GOING TO TRY THEM AND I HOPE MY SUGGESTION N IDEAS WORK FOR ME WHEN I CONTINUE TO USE THIS REPHRESH AND IF NOT ONE OF YOUR IDEAS. AND I DID NOT CHEAT ON MY B/F.... VERY PISSED OFF THAT SOMEON IS NOT TRYING IN THE MEDICAL FIELD TO GIVE MORE ACCURATE INFORMATION ABOUT THIS INFECTION!"

[QUESTION] 02/15/2009: Lady Jaine from Auckland, New Zealand writes: "Wow... very informative sight!!! Looking back I think I may have had this BV for longer than I thought. Only because when it did appear, it only ever used to be light symptons, hence wasn't easily recognisable. Couple of questions: Has anyone experianced a 'bowt' of excessive 'trapped wind' with this BV? I tend to belch like you don't know what. Often with a wee bit of an upset stomach? Just wondering if there is any connection. Also, I've heard of stories where consumption of beer sets off BV? Any thoughts??? I'm going to try the acidopholus and see how that goes.Yay for this sight!!!"
Replies02/16/2009: Rosy from Orlando, Fl replies: "Excessive flavorful belching can be a sign that you are not properly digesting and absorbing your food. I have noticed acidophilus for BV working, and this could be that some people's BV is a symptom of leaky gut."

[YEA] 02/13/2009: shannon from Oakland, california, usa writes: "I notice that whenever I have rough sex where he sort of slips into the back door and then back into the front, accidentally, the infections shows its ugly little head a few days later. I would usually go to Planned Parenthood and get checked and treated with METRONIDAZOLE. It can be taken orally, which is the more invasive way. You have to take it twice a day for a seven days with plenty of water and food and you should avoid alcohol. You can also take it vaginally. There's the METRONIDAZOLE GEL that is inserted into the vagina with an applicator before bed for five days. Lastly, the cream one time insert that stays in place and treats over the course of seven days. I like the gel the best because one tube is actually enough to treat yourself twice in case it returns, however, most meds have an expiration date so be sure it isnt expired before using it. I also feel very embarrassed and ashamed because it feels as if Planned Parenthood is my second home. I am actually experiencing an episode now and decided to treat with ACIDOPHILUS. I notice some women are experiencing some problems with it not disolving. I use a small dropper and I open one pill and disolve it fully in warm water and then insert the solution slowly inside and let it flush out on its own. I have tried this in the past and I must say it worked. I do, however, began ito experience some mild itching which is characteristic of a yeast infection but there are tons of over the counter remedies to help with that. Although I have been able to clear it up with the solution, I still feel better about seeing a GYN and getting a prescription for the METRONIDAZOLE. I guess some of us are just more sensitive than others and we have to pay attention to what SHE can handle and what SHE cant. Plenty of water makes a differnce where all health is concerned and urinating before and after sex makes a difference as well. WHEW!!! I feel a lot better knowing that I am not the only one. Thanks for reading and for sharing

I have done a round of colonics and wasn't so great about taking the acidophilus EVERY day. I noticed that after the 2nd one, I experienced some vaginal discharge and that it smelled 'off'. My colonic therapist said it was my body detoxing. I'm thinking that the acidophilus is a balancing agent? I'm not completely sure I understand how all that flora stuff works, but if i start taking my acidophilus every day, will this go away? I have no itching, just an odor and a milky discharge. Thanks."

01/04/2009: Jessica from Ft. Collins, CO writes: "Please help me! I'm going nuts. 30 years old and living with BV for 4 years now and now pregnant!
I had a leep procedure to remove pre-cancer cells done about 3 years ago. Following the month of leakage from the procedure (they take a loop on the end of a stick attached to a power cord, they put the loop around the abnormal cells and pull the loop cord tight, then then turn on the power and burn the area removing the abnormal cells and cauterizing the area immediately. Well, following the "normal" leakage a month following and withholding from sex during that time and an extra week after like they told me, I got BV.
I have read that it is multiple sex partners, well that is bull crap if virgins can get it. I had been with my bf for about 8 months prior to the leep with no issues, and before that I had always had protected sex, the only time I didn't is if the condom broke, but never got BV until this evasive leep procedure, Well 3+ years later and the different docotrs' lame attempt to give me many doses of Metradozle, which did work to remove the smell and discharge but it just sends the bacterial to my vulva and clitoris making them burn, swell 2 to 3 times the size and itch and I itch it so much and hard that I tear the skin and make it bleed.
I have heard all the remedies and haven't had any money to go about them well I finally have money to try these home remedies and now I'm pregnant and are weary to take something in fear that it will harm my unborn. I cry, I'm up all hours of the night itching,
I wiped my outer vaginal area with peroxide thinking it would kill the bacteria; it stops for a few hours but since I tore the skin it burns like hell, I immediately put cold water on in and sat with an ice pack between my legs to reduce the swelling and hoping to just numb the pain away. It is a slight temporary relief. I have been and now that it has moved down am going more crazy since the itching was never there. The smell is gone but this itching makes me want to remove my parts.
As you all know this problem of BV can cause depression and feelings of low self esteem due to the nasty fish smell. I am embarrassed to have sex with my boyfriend of 4+ years, He is so good and usually just ignores it but sometimes it is so smelly that he loses his "boner" and the discharge dries up causing friction and almost a dust or crumbs as well. I hate this and I hate that the docs don't really take it that seriously that they prescribe a yeast infection cream, this is far worse than a yeast infection docs, and I am seriously wanting to try all of these remedies but like I said I am pregnant now and terrified to harm my baby. HELP ME!
I refuse to douche even while not pregnant, that is a terrible idea and yes I believe you are pushing bacteria further up your vagina so I don't want doucheing remedies.
Oh and sometimes after it leaves my Vagina and hangs out in the vulvar clitoris area it travels up my urethra giving me a wicked UTI and then back up the vagina.
It has nothing to do with a weak immune system as I have been sick/ill onetime in 9 years other than the BV. It is not an overuse of antibiotics either, as I have only take an antibiotic this one time I was sick and that was 1 year prior to the BV at 25 yrs old I don't like to take antibiotics as eventually you become immune to them and when you really need them for something severe they wont work. They won't give me an antibiotic yet since I am too early in my pregnancy thus far but I will try it when the time comes as I'm sure my doc can't be sure about the holistic measures affecting my baby. I have no hope that it will work either as the accounts here have stated that the antibiotic is only short term.
I thought that it had to do something with my boyfriends sperm chemistry since before the leep we only had unprotected sex 3 times which caused a pregnancy and miscarriage then the procedure which like i said i waited over a month to start having sex again. So I thought his sperm could be reacting with my bacteria but it does get worse around menses so I know that this idea is probably false as well.
We have both been so faithful that I don't believe it is as an STD since I have been tested before and after being with him. Although, through my BV research I came upon an STD called TRICHOMONIASIS that produces BV like symptoms, so I am calling my doc monday to ORDER a test immediately in which case a positive result would mean he get treated as well. This is a possibility since they don't routinely test for this STD and myself and others included get the "BV" back after having sex again with their man and they say you can't pass it but why do we rid of it and then get it back after intercourse. I think this is a possibility and I will defiantly keep you updated about the STD they call TRICH. Here is the Center for Disease control website regarding "TRICH".
www.cdc.gov/STD/Trichomonas/STDFact-Trichomoniasis.htm
Sadly it seems that they cure trich with metronizadole but like I said if it is Trich the man also needs to be treated so it may actually work instead of reoccuring.
I will state that after writing the past hour and wiping with peroxide at the beginning I feel about 60 percent better with the swelling and itching and pain and I have a day off tomorrow so I will wipe every other time with it since I will not be at work 8 hours, I will also let you know how that goes.

I too went back and forth to the dr. paying fee after fee. Feeling so unclean with myself and feeling as if my boyfriend (though understanding) and dr. was getting disgusted by me. I thought I had an STD, or worse because out of being married 10 years with 3 kids now divorced, this had never occured. I have been searching for some home remedies and came across this site. I just went out and bought the HP, FOLIC ACID AND ACIDOPHILUS. I pray this works for me. I am encourage by everyone's testimonial. I will keep you posted ...

I used to get treated for it, but I couldn't drink on one of the meds so I skip it. I've just learned to live with it. I use panty liners when I want to feel as clean as I can and not stink up the place and/or ruin my undies. And my hubby and I always "cut up" after we wash. I do pee afterwards though. Doesn't do much for me. If I don't wear liners and change undies frequently, I break out in this horrible rash down there, that the doctors wouldn't even ATTEMPT to treat. So I know what youre going through ladies. I read the other survivor's comments and I too noticed my "good gurl" was at her happiest when my hubby went to Iraq, even though I was stressed n depressed. I'm still tryin to figure out what we all have in common? I read somewhere that it's likely caused by getting oral sex. Maybe that's it. But if that's wrong I refuse to be right. lol. I bought the pills and the peroxide but just havent tried it yet. I guess because I've wasted years living with this problem and I will be so hurt if I find out this is all it took to keep me balanced. But I'll just take the high road and thank God for letting me find a cure at all. I did the h2o2 douche once. It helps but it does sting a little. So I need to douche 7 days str8? How often? 7 per month? Could I get more specific details please? Thanx"

11/27/2008: Lori from Tampa, FL writes: "Ok, so like many of you other women out there, I've been suffering from this horrible annoyance on and off for the last two years now. At first I thought maybe it was an STD, becuase it showed up within a week after having a new partner for the first time in 5 years. The discharge and the awful smell from it made me feel so dirty and gross. I was horrifed! NEVER in my life had I had a problem like this before. I went to the gyno thinking it was something really bad... I knew it wasn't a yeast infection, becuase I know there isn't that offensive smell associated with that. She told me it was BV, and gave me the metro gel. Of course it worked after using it, but the BV kept coming back. Sometime it took 2 weeks, sometimes it took 2 months, but it ALWAYS came back! Everytime it came back, I'd use one dose of the metro gel ( verses the 5 day normal dosage ) and the one dose usually is enough to stop it in it's tracks....the thing is it's an antibiotic, so if I keep using it, I'm thinking in time it may no longer work anymore, as my body may build up an immunity to it? So I too started doing research on what else can be used as a cure that isn't an anitbiotic. During the last two years dealing with this awful problem, I've come to realize for me personally, I ONLY get BV when I have sex ( and yes, it's sill with the same partner who it began with 2 years ago. ) I know some women get it from other causes aside from sex...BUT if you're like me and that's the only time that you seem to have this problem occur, then it's definately your partner's semen throwing off your PH down there, and leading to this problem. ( As others have mentioned on here ) I've never had another partner in the past who has made this problem occur for me, until now! I talked to my gyno, and we even saw his urologist to see what we can do to prevent this. Of course they both said use condoms to decrease the amount of semen I'd get exposed to....well, this works somtimes...BUT even a condom doesn't always prevent it! So here's my question...does anybody know of a supplement that he can maybe take to change his body chemistry to a more "neutral" or acidic PH count so this can stop being a problem?? Also, I wanted to let you ladies know that in the UK they have a new product called Balance Activ ( it's spelled just like that too ) that's supposed to be a natural cure for BV ( not antibiotic ). We don't have it here in the US, but I plan to get some shipped over here, and see if it really works. They say if you use this vaginal cream weekly, it can help prevent BV, and if you have BV already, use it for a week and it clears it up. I have to try this since it does soung promising! I use 50/50 peroxide and water douche, but I seem to get mixed results, so I want something more effective. I'll let you all know if I try this new remedy from the UK if it works or not! Otherwise if anyone can let me know about something my man can take to alter the PH of his semen, that would be great! Sorry I wrote such a long post, but thanks for reading it :)"

I was reading some of the post the other day and found that some women were having success with acidophilus and folic acid. I went to walgreens on thanksgiving day and purchased a bottle of 400 ml folic acid and a bottle of acidophilus. i took 1 of each pill. the next morning when i got up and went to the restroom i noticed right away that there wasn't any fishy odor!! I was amazed!! i bought the capsule form of acidophilus.(the bottle says "guaranteed 3 billion live cultures". I am taking one of each together twice a day. i am cautiously optimistic that this will continue to keep my BV away. I will post again in a few weeks and let you know if it is still working. also they say that douching in any form is not good."

I did this because i have had this problem a few times and like a lot of women it keeps coming back and I don't know why. It is embarrasing to me to smell myself and then on top of that my husband makes comments about the way I smell which makes me feel dirty and ashamed and I know it has nothing to do with my hygeine. He is a man and just doesn't understand. Anyway I thought to do some research on this because I don't have insurance or the money to the Dr evertime I get so I need some more option and I will definatly try these and I will come back soon to comment. Thank for all of you that left your story it feels good to know that I am not a lone and that there may be some help for me. GOD BLESS!!!"

I have a sneaking suspicion I got it from a certain male whom I trusted and probably shouldn't have. It's been so hard, and I cry all the time. I don't feel comfortable telling anyone because I know they judge me and I feel ridiculous that I haven't been able to get rid of it yet.
I'm so grateful for all the women who have posted on here with helpful tips and I'm going to start them tomorrow after my last ditch attempt to cure it by medication prescribed by my gyno. I'm so sorry that all of you have to deal with this because I know the torture it causes. Although this website has given me hope!!
I'm really opposed to douching and I can't eat yogurt because I'm allergic but I'm going to take the acidophilous both ways and i'm going to also try the follic acid. I'm not quite sure how to take the follic acid yet because it doesn't seem to clear from most of the posts I've.
Good luck everyone! I will post if I have success!!
Also feel free to e-mail me to talk about what you did that worked or what you're trying or just for some moral support! i know i could sure use some too sometimes."

06/27/2011: Tea from Toronto, On replies: "I cannot believe I actually came across this site. I cannot describe how helpful it has truly been. Where to start...?Ever since taking birth control at 17/18 (depo, then the pill), I was plagued by chronic vaginal infections as well as other terrible side effects. Basically, to describe how severe the problem was, around 2-3 different infections (BV, yeast) in 1-1.5 months time. I no longer take any form of hormonal birth control, but was still plagued by "spells" of infections. Recently, I stumbled across this site (having yet another BV attack! ) and learned of the hydrogen peroxide douche. I decided to try it instead of going to the clinic again, and low and behold, I have not had another infection since! I do it once a month now or once every 2 months. I guess I am paranoid they will come back...
After awhile, realizing I hadn't gotten an infection since using it, I started to wonder about the benefits of hydrogen peroxide. I decided to try a cleanse, ingesting 35% hydrogen peroxide (diluted to 3% with distilled water) 3x/day for 3 weeks, after which you wean off into a maintenance dosage. I am currently 2 weeks into this max. Dosage. I am hoping this will clear up a candida overgrowth I may have had all along, causing the recurrent infections. I had even been to a specialist, and countless doctors, none of which ever mentioned candida. I believe this overgrowth was what was also causing the toenail fungus I developed after going to a salon, which has persisted for 3 years. Although it is too soon to say for sure, I think they are getting better, and I believe my body is too.
There is a spit test you can do at home to see if you may have a problem. First thing in the morning, spit twice into a glass of bottled/spring water. Let sit (or watch it for approx 15 min. ) If the spit dissolves in the water completely then you do not have an overgrowth of candida. If it is thick, white, floating down to the bottom or you see white sediment in the glass, then you have an overgrowth. You can also be tested by a doctor via urine, blood or stool. Do some research and find out some of the side effects of this overgrowth and using hydrogen peroxide in general. It is dangerous if not handled/administered correctly, but I believe when used properly, it has some amazing benefits.
I hope this helps anyone who is experiencing something similar. I know it has helped me."

I'm curious to know if anyone also has some type of other irritations going on as well such as toe fungus, sinus infections, yeasty type of irritations and could these all be linked together as a whole?? Also could this be a hormonal situation rather than a bacterial situation? For instance, My sister suffered for many years with this and each time she became pregnant the sypmtoms completely went away (no odor or discharge) but then returned after childbirth? Does anyone have any feedback?"

So we can just nix the multiple partner stuff they tell you. I am a sufferer too. It kind be so damging to a relationship. I hardly ever want to have sex b/c of it. But what I have found out about myself is that fragrance, dyes, stress, dairy ( allergic to it so I avoid it ) and BREAD cause my BV to come faster than a runny egg. I pick toilet paper, soap, laundry detergent, panties, baby wipes, and towels wisely! I avoid eating anything with yeast in it! I stay away from sugary foods ( fast food=sugar )and beverages. I use plain water or cetaphil when I wash below. I'm currently looking into health store brands of tampons and pads ( they are dyed with chlorine mmm ), because my BV returns after my period. I think pads and tampons did this to me! Because I didn't have any problems until I started using them! Grrr. But if I get BV outside of my period I usually have eaten something I shouldn't have or I've exposed myself to something with dye or fragrance in it. For example, I once broke out in hives from using a scented tampon... Yeah I won't do that again! And even though honey is sugary I take a table spoon of wild honey every day ( mankua honey is better ) for its antifungal properties.. it worked great on my toe fungus!"

[WARNING!] 12/27/2007: EB from Cleveland, OH writes: "I have a friend who is a nurse who is very knowledgeable about modern medicine. I currently have BV and was prescribed flagyl. I'm on day four of the medication and have been experiencing minor side effects. I asked my friend if she would take flagyl if she had BV. She said, "Absolutely not. Because flagyl kills ALL bacteria in the vagina it is very harsh on the body." Flagyl as a remedy to BV doesn't make sense. To get rid of BV, you shouldn't have to kill all of the bacteria in the vagina. This leaves us more susceptible to infections, which require more medication, which increases profit for pharmaceutical companies. Unfortunately, modern medicine is in the business of making money. I'm convinced that anything driven by profit can not be authentically concerned with healing and saving bodies. Rather developing more holistic medicine that preserves balance in the body, drug companies often develop drugs that temporarily assuage a problem, but don't cure it. In this way, they reinforce drug dependence driving up their profits in the process. I started taking folic acid (800mg) today and i'm hoping that it works for me as well. I'll start taking the acidophilus after I finish the flagyl, as i'm not sure its a good idea to mix antibiotics (flagyl) with probiotics (acidophilus). I really hope that it works for me because I don't want to have to depend on medication prescribed by my GYN in the future. And given my sensitive body, I'm sure i'm very suscepticle to recurring BV infections. I'll write back in a month or so my experience with folic acide and acidophilus. To your Health ladies, EB from Cleveland"

I thought nothing of it, and just figured that I was going to start my period or that I ate something that made things smell weird. Yesterday, I was sitting at my computer typing and all of the sudden became overwhelmed by an extremely strong fish odor, that almost made me gag. I began to do my research. This morning when I took my shower, i noticed that it smelled even after I had washed it several times, and that it took scrubbing to get the smell off of my hand. After my shower I soaked a tampon in tea tree oil, and that seems to be controlling the odor. I am going to start with the boric acid and acidophilus today, and hopefully get rid of this thing before it gets any worse. Thank you for your postings, I hope they work and I will keep you updated on progress. The strangest thing about this situation is that I can't figure out what brought it on. I have no new sex partners, do not douche or use smell pretty products down there, and am just not sure what happened."

Kept getting it over & over this past year, and Flagyl helped until I had sex again (same person). I tried the peroxide douche and thought it helped, (smell went away, itchiness stopped) but it was temporary. Turns out, I found out today it is Trichomoniasis, and I keep getting reinfected from partner with no symptoms. My point is, if you've been to a doctor and know what you have, by all means try these cures on here. But DO NOT self diagnose, as I did, based on symptoms. They are almost identical, and I never dreamed I had Trich (and I'm not real happy about it either). But it's easily curable, they say, so we'll see. Good luck to all here, and though I'm glad I don't have a penis, sometimes a VaJayJay is a bigger pain!"

If you are still together take his A@# to the clinic and watch him take the pills. Wait for at least a week before having intercourse again and you two should be fine. If the crap comes back you know that he's sleeping around becuase unlike BV, Trich is a sexually transmitted infection. Good Luck!!"

I have been taking Aciphodilus (orally) for months now and it dosent do much. Tonight I tried the 1/2 H20 & Hydro soaked in a tampon. I tried to do with a douche but it started to burn so I am now doing the tampon and it does not burn. I am still waiting for results it has been in for about an hour now.
