Dietary Changes   2  0

Posted by Di (Brooklyn , NY) on 12/16/2008

[YEA]  Hello ladies, ive been suffering from BV for some time myself. The reason for this bacteria occurrence is the pH imbalance in your vagina. I've noticed that a lot of you are recommending the hydrogen peroxide, it is a good way to get rid of the bacteria but dont over use it. It still is an acid and eventually could cause other complications because it strips away you vaginal walls. For starters what you all should do is try to change you diet. SUGAR IS A BIG NO!! sugar will prevent Lactobacillus species from growing. You should also try to eat more grain and less refined flour foods like white bread and pasta. If you have whole foods in your area or a Russian store you can get kefir, it is cultured milk and a natural probiotic. Try to incorporate kefir into your daily diet. Acidophilus will cure the infection but its up to you to keep it from coming back. Your diet is the key to keeping the pH balance in order. it took me about 2 months with just cutting out sugars and drinking cultured milk to get rid of the infection. I didnt use acidophilus or douches, just kept what i eat under control. Maybe itll help you too.

I was interested in what you said about the hydrogen peroxide striping away the vaginal walls. I used hydro perx for a yeast infection (at full strength) and now cannot have sex at all. It burns so bad, I can't stand it. It feels like a chemical burn and I'm wondering if it was the hyro peroxide. It's been long enough now that it should have healed. I'm worried it may be vulvodynia possibly. Anything you could think of that I could do to help or any thoughts/suggestions would be appreciated.

revising previous post: I googled to find out more and it's not vulvodynia, because this condition is on the outside of the vagina and somtimes near the opening NOT on the inside. My condition is on the inside ONLY. Anyone that has thoughts or suggestions, please respond. Thanks

Mrs T., I have read where some N.D. 's recomend Povidone Iodine prior to the acidophilus, especially in persistent cases, as the iodine cleans house for the friendly bacteria to better make their home.

Essential Oils   1  0

Posted by Barbara (New York) on 03/12/2012

[YEA]  I'm recently dealing with BV and wanted to share the treatment that my MD, who is also a naturopath, prescribed: purchase a natural sea sponge from the health food store (I found them at whole foods being sold as "cosmetic" sponge), then cut it to tampon sized pieces. Get the highest quality you can find of Thyme and Frankincense essential oils and mix 2 drops Thyme oil 4 drops Frankincense oil in 10 drops Extra Virgin olive oil. Soak up the oil with the sea sponge (after you washed it thoroughly with antibacterial soap- the water also makes it very soft) then insert. Leave in for 2 hours, 2 x day. Repeat for 7 days.

I looked up the medicinal uses of these oils and they are for bacterial infections, inflammation, and regulating female hormonal system. I suspect that the hormone imbalance is the real root of the BV. It is working for me with 80% improvement after 4 days - though I think I will get the boric acid capsules and better probiotics tomorrow. I have also done a few days of alternating tea tree oil suppository and probiotic inserted at night but the oils are the only thing I have been doing consistently.

Just wanted to share bc I didn't see any mention of essential oils (but maybe I'm in the wrong place on forum). These two oils in particular are very powerful, but it has to be high quality. Young Living is very expensive but amazing quality. There are other good ones out there. My Dr told me he thought was equal if not better quality but it's half the price. I'm using their oils now.

Fermented Cabbage Leaf   0  0

Posted by Bonnie (Phila, Pa) on 01/20/2013

[BETTER BUT NOT CURED]  I was looking for a natural source of lactic acid for my bacterial vaginosis. I have been lacto-fermenting vegetables lately, and read that they have lactic acid. So I rolled up a piece of cabbage leaf from the sauerkraut jar, to the size of a small tampon, and inserted it into my vagina. I change it morning and night. So far, the discharge and smell are gone. I plan to do this ten days in a row.

Flagyl   1  0

Posted by Julie (Kenosha, Wi) on 11/07/2012

[SIDE EFFECTS]  I also have bv issues, when I use the flagyl/metrodizanole for seven days I have issues with my arms going to sleep. Am I allergic to the medication?

Posted by Shomabe (Sheffield, Uk) on 09/12/2012

I too suffered with this for nearly a year and a half. I had various treatments including antibiotics for 5 days and also one dose of 5 tablets at once I also tried the internal creams but nothing cleared it completely. However, each treatment seemed to make it a little better each time. I did the common mistake of washing like mad with soap and this made the discharge worse. I finally got rid of it by going to my gp and asking for the 5 day course of metronidazole antibiotics and metronidazole gel as this worked better than the cream. I had aqueous cream to wash my vaginal area in the shower. I just put loads of this onto a flannel the same as I would shower gel as it is not perfumed. I also took 3 dried capsules of acidophilus in the morning with a yoghurt, 1 folic acid tablet and one of the dissolvable vitamin c tablets. I recently needed to have a smear done and while I was there I got the nurse to swab me for bv and the result came back clear..... Finally! :-). I hope this remedy helps anyone else unlucky enough to suffer with this as I know it's sooooo difficult to get rid of. Please let me know if it works for you.

Folic Acid, Apple Cider Vinegar Douche   1  0

Posted by Jo Ann (Pearl City, Hawaii) on 07/15/2008

[YEA]  I have had BV for the last 40 years. The first 30 were misdiagnosed by several gynocologists. They all told me I had a yeast infection. About 10 years ago, my OB/GYN told me I had Bacterial Vaginosis and treated me with Flagyl. This got rid of my problem but only temporarily. BV plagued me 3-4 times a year. Each time I took Flagyl. Throughout the 40 years, I douched almost daily to control the smelly fishy odor. I knew douching so often was probably making the BV worse but I was desperate. Then, a few days ago I found your site and read the many positive comments about folic acid.I purchased a bottle and began taking 800 mcg twice a day. I also douched using 1 teaspoon of apple cider vinegar. By Saturday, the odor and discharge were gone. I plan to continue taking 800 mcg 2 times per day for the next 2 weeks and maintain one 800 mcg per day thereafter. I can't believe this inexpensive supplement and apple cider vinegar got rid of my BV after 40 miserable years of Bacterial Vaginosis!!! A big mahalo (thank you) to Earth Clinic for making this valuable information available to women who suffer with BV and other health issues.

Folic Acid, Garlic   1  0

Posted by Gokhals (San Francisco, Ca, Usa) on 03/21/2011

[YEA]  800 mg Folic acid [mine had B6/B12 added to it, taken once a day sublingually, 2 pods of garlic mashed thoroughly and mixed with extra virgin olive oil, applied several times a day. Worked! Am not sure it was the folic acid or the olive oil or the garlic, but it worked.

Folic Acid, Probiotics   1  0

Posted by Sadie (London, On) on 09/15/2011

[YEA]  I was a suffer from BV, at first I thought I had a sti but wasn't sexual active at the time, but yes its bv and wow... What a horrible thing to go thro... So I would like to say that I haven't had it for probaly about a year now. I take a strong probiotic 3 times a day EVERYDAY and 1 folic acid. Now if you suffering right now you should take 2 folic acid for a couple of days untill you feel better. Also inserting organic plain yogurt into you vag like 2 or 3 times a day (when suffering) has amazing results. I do the yogurt thing once in awhile for good measure. I can't tell you how much better life is without bv.

Now I do find that a yeast infection creeps in every so often but I'm going to do a candida cleanse soon to take care of that... But for you bv sufferers.... I swear by it... I never douched or inserted the pills and it worked great for me. The yogurt brings immediate relief. Make sure it's organic tho otherwise it contains some other stuff in it. Hope I help someone out there! We woman need each other for things like this, I since then have found other woman that constanly fight uti, yeast infection and bv and am still suprised by how little we talk to each other about these things. Next time your out with your gfs, bring it up... Chances are you could help one of them... It's an embarsing thing so you never know who is suffering as well.... could be your best friend.

I have been struggling with bv for about two weeks, four nights ago I went in search for a home remedy. Night one I inserted a 500mg vitamin c with no pain and great success. I awoke the next morning to no smelly discharge. The second night I got ambitious and inserted a 500 mg vitamin c and a probiotic, the next morning no smelly discharge but I did have some granules. The third night I inserted the same vitamin c and a probiotic within 30 minutes I was in pain and I used a store bought douche to rinse that out. Tonight I am starting over... I rinsed with a tsp of apple cider vinegar with water and I have inserted two 500 mg vitamin c. I hope this takes care of the bv.

Hi there! Like you, I've been a chronic BV (and yeast infection) sufferer for years. I've tried antibiotics, antifungals, oral probiotics, and folic acid to no avail! So I conducted an extensive research on the matter (I have access to scholarly research databases) and cured myself. Here's what I've done:

1. Vitamin D (2000 IU/day). Recent research show a direct correlation between Vit D deficiency and increased risk for BV. Vitamin D also promotes the regeneration of squamous epithelials that consists the mucousal lining of the vagina.

2. Femina Flora (1 capsule/night for 10 nights). This is a vaginal probiotic capsule with 10Billion CFU's of Lactobacilli species including Lactobacillus Rhamnosus which has shown ability to adhere to and colonize the vaginal walls. It also contains lactose (to feed the Lactobacilli) and Vitamin C (to assist in lowering the vaginal pH).

3. Oral probiotics. I suggest using FemDophilus or Ultimate Flora Vaginal Support. FemDophilus contains Lactobacillus Reuteri and Rhamnosus while Ultimate Flora contains Rhamnosus and other Lactobacilli species. Both aforementioned species are excellent in adhering to and thriving in the vaginal environment.

Note: These remedies don't have to be permanent. For example, if you live near the equator 15-20 mins in the sun without suscreen will provide you with 10, 000 IU of Vitamin D. Otherwise, you can supplement with 1000 IU once you're symptoms alleviate. Also, you can wean yourself off or lower your probiotics dosage after your symptoms are gone -- you can take 1 capsule every other day, then 2 capsules/week, then 1cap/week.

Good luck! ;)

[BETTER BUT NOT CURED]  This is my 3rd posting after starting the folic acid and probiotic treatment for BV which I have suffered for years. Its been 8-days and Im doing great, no symptoms. I had sex for the first time since starting on this regimen and I was terrified that the BV would come right back. I was prepared for the worst and that is exactly what happened. Within about 30 minutes of having sex I could feel that familiar burning and swelling and VIOLA, it was back within a few hours but I was ready and knew what to do. I took 4 probiotics (5 billion each) and inserted 2 vaginally and took 1600mcg of folic acid. Within about 45 minutes it was all back to normal. So, that is the way to do it ladies. Be ready after you have sex because most likely it will come back. But it can be controlled, and that is the key. I should have probably waited longer before having sex, but for me, I knew it would come back regardless of how long I waited.

I don't know if this applies to you but back when I was on the pill, I noticed I would almost always get burning and swelling whenever my boyfriend would ejaculate inside of me. I figured I was allergic to his semen. Maybe I had BV all along. Who knows?? Anyway, my suggestion is to stay away semen at all costs haha

Hi, in reply to you thinking you're allergic to your bf's sperm/semen.

It's actually not an allergy, it's more a case of semen being alkaline and when it gets injected into the normally acidic vagina, it makes you more susceptible to bacterial overgrowth such as Gardnerella organism in BV. We all have this bug in our vagina, it's part of the normal vaginal flora. When we are stressed or when the vaginal environment becomes too alkaline via semen etc, we become more susceptible to organisms such as BV.

That's why all those gels work as they acidify the vagina, though aren't a cure of BV, just ameliorate the symptoms.
Hope this helps.

I am so glad that I found this site. I have been suffering from BV off and on since 2001 after my LEEP procedure. Nothing the doctor prescribed me worked. I am blessed that I don't have the horrible smell anymore. Over the years my symptoms have changed. Now I just have the discharge sometimes watery with slight itching an burning. At the moment I don't have any folic acid or probiotics. I do have a multivitamin that has 400 mcg of folic acid. I took 3. I also tried the water/peroxide douche. I have a douche bottle that I purchesed from my local drug store. I filled it up with water and put a cap full of peroxide. I actually feel clean inside. You guys may think it's crazy but it feels calm in there too. LOL Thank you all for providing this information on this site. It's sad that we are able to figure out treatments that Dr's who have went to school for 10 years can't even figure out! I wish you all the best of luck with fighting this evil bacteria.

I am so thrilled that is site is out there!! Dealing with this has been hard, expensive and mostly embarrassing!! Thank goodness you women are so brave to put it out there :) I tried the peroxide and.... It worked immediately! @ hours with a peroxide soaked tampon and the smell was gone! I just soaked a plastic applicator type tampon (still intact) for 15 mins. And then inserted it for 2 hours. There was not even a hint of scent on it, more importantly in me!! 24 hours and still everything is good, THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH!!

Garlic   5  0

Posted by Dani (Norfolk, Va.) on 05/31/2014

[YEA]  After searching the internet I decided that whole organic garlic cloves was the answer for BV and boy was I right! Of course I discovered the cure right in the middle of a raging yeast infection so I took drastic measures....insertion! I took a clove of organic garlic (the fresher the better you want it to be firm not rubbery) cut it in half and inserted it vaginally . Within minutes I noticed a strong garlic taste in my mouth but expected that from what I had read. Within hours I was noticing relief, the itching wasn't nearly as bad...but it did burn a little. Then when I went pee, I noticed a lot of white stuff floating in the water, like the yeast was draining out of me. I did this for two days and was completely cured...for a few months.

This cycle went on for about a year until it dawned on me that I wasn't being proactive! I started taking organic garlic capsules every day an have been yeast free for years now :) I have a friend that says she doesn't think the garlic capsules work so she just eats a clove or two every day and it works for her too! Hope this helps someone.

EC: Inserting a whole clove with no nicks or cuts will make it less likely to burn, but will still yield the same result.
