Florajen is a very high quality probiotic. You can get it at Pharmacies all over or on the Internet. It is Refrigerated at the Pharmacy so you have to ask for it. I also read that 100 mg of vitamin B6 will cure Bacterial vaginosis (drink plenty of water with it) so I am waiting on the Vitamin B6. I take my florajen (35 billion cfu's) on an empty stomach and wait 20-35 minutes or more so it can reach my intestines. It works best this way."

I read about several others taking Folic Acid Supplements. It Works wonders! everytime my Monthly would come on I had an horrible fish smell that was quite disturbing to myself and others around me. No more odors!!! I thank GOD for this site and the people that had the courage to write and tell about their experiences!"

At first I thought it was because I had a new boyfriend & i thought that had something to do with it. I went to the GYN & he prescribed some antibiotics & it worked for awhile. But then I notice that everytime I got my period the discharged & smell came back, so I wasnt sure if it was BV again or what. I started seaching the internet today & came across this website. I read some stories & they are all very similar to mine! I said: Thank God I am not alone! I am going to get the Folic Acid, Yogurt & Acidophilus right now!!...Wish me luck!!..."

[YEA] 07/24/2007: CJ from Greensboro, NC writes: "I had been fighting BV for close to two years, having been misdiagnosed as having a yeast infection. One time, my doctor did the test and realized I had BV, after that when I called in, even if I said I'd been diagnosed with BV before, I was treated for a yeast infection, never asked to come in and get tested again. Once a month I would get the symptoms, and was told to treat with over the counter yeast infection treatments. This would help for about two weeks, then the syptoms would return. Finally I thought, I bet I'm still having the BV even though my doctor is ignoring that possibility, and searched for at home remedies for BV. I came across this site and the advice to take folic acid. Keep in mind, I'd been dealing with these symptoms for two years, every two weeks to 1 month - my life had been miserable! When I saw that folic acid might help, I immediately went to the grocery store and picked some up with the yogurt (thinking I would do the yogurt treatments as well). I took 2 folic acid supplements and in 30 minutes, felt good as new. I continued to take two a day for a week and the symptoms disappeared! Now, almost 3 months since I tried the folic acid treatment, I have had no reoccuring symptoms, for the first time in two years, I'm free! I only take the folic acid if I think I feel BV symptoms, and it still had not returned. Try the folic acid first and see if it helps! It's awesome, two years of never ending symptoms have stopped by just taking some extra folic acid! YEA!"

I bought folic acid pills and took 1200 micrograms (3 pills x 400 micrograms) and my symptoms disappeared in a half an hour. No more symptoms at all. No itching, no burning at all. Also, why don't you guys suggest apple cider vinegar? I always always rinse myself with apple cider vinegar solution after sex to prevent infections. Last Saturday I was too tired to do it and on Tuesday I started having symptoms. I continued rinsing with apple cider vinegar solution twice a day while taking the pills."

FOLIC ACID, APPLE CIDER VINEGAR DOUCHE
[YEA] 07/15/2008: Jo Ann from Pearl City, Hawaii writes: "I have had BV for the last 40 years. The first 30 were misdiagnosed by several gynocologists. They all told me I had a yeast infection. About 10 years ago, my OB/GYN told me I had Bacterial Vaginosis and treated me with Flagyl. This got rid of my problem but only temporarily. BV plagued me 3-4 times a year. Each time I took Flagyl. Throughout the 40 years, I douched almost daily to control the smelly fishy odor. I knew douching so often was probably making the BV worse but I was desperate. Then, a few days ago I found your site and read the many positive comments about folic acid.I purchased a bottle and began taking 800 mcg twice a day. I also douched using 1 teaspoon of apple cider vinegar. By Saturday, the odor and discharge were gone. I plan to continue taking 800 mcg 2 times per day for the next 2 weeks and maintain one 800 mcg per day thereafter. I can't believe this inexpensive supplement and apple cider vinegar got rid of my BV after 40 miserable years of Bacterial Vaginosis!!! A big mahalo (thank you) to Earth Clinic for making this valuable information available to women who suffer with BV and other health issues."

[YEA] 11/04/2009: Ms. Remy from Eastern, North Carolina writes: "I have been dealing with I thought was a yeast infection then all of a sudden I noticed a foul smelling odor afterwards that was hard to get rid of, however; I just used the garlic gel pills that is 1,000 mg and inserted (2 pills) in my vagina for two days in between those days a discharged occurred but I guess it was normal for that to happen but I am now odor and discharge free. Why? did I do this because when you go to the doctor they give you pencillin and next to that if you can't afford the visit garlic is next in line to cure you. I read this site whereas everyone is using gel pills so I went home and inserted the garlic gel pills instead remind you I had this infection for about a good 3 months and it was getting worse now. I am cured. Just keep washing with dove unscented soap and keep a dry unscented pantiliner on day and night to keep yourself dry. Remember garlic eats yeast and purifies. I advise you all not to douche just keep your system flush with fluid because that vinegar/water douche by equate irritated me that caused this to happen."

[YEA] 10/11/2008: Aminta from Charlotte, NC writes: "I want to thank earthclinic.com for starting this website. It has truly been a blessing to me. I am writing to let you ladies know that, although no one commented that they used fresh garlic as a cure, it really works. I have suffered from BV for 3 yrs (since my husband cheated on me). Every other month after that I was getting recurrences of BV. Like the rest of you, neither the cream's nor pill's got rid of the BV for good. I recently was reading up on how natural garlic heal's so many ailment's. So, I bought so garlic, peeled it and wrapped it in gauze. I tied it with dental floss and inserted it in my vagina once a day, preferably at night before bed. I would remove the garlic every morning before taking my shower. I did this for 7 day's and I am symptom free still today. The bad thing about it is that the smell of garlic doesn't wear off for a while so if you are sexually active often then I wouldn't recommend this home remedy. I hope this remedy help's you ladies. It is alot cheaper on your pocket's. I bought 2 bulb's of garlic for under $1.00."
EC: That's true, Aminta -- hundreds of responses, but no mention of garlic for bacterial vaginosis. Thanks for the new remedy!

I will have to let yall know after I go to the doc and get yelled at for not taking the antibiotics."

[BETTER BUT NOT CURED] 07/06/2009: Kennedy from Broomeville, SC writes: "Hi ladies I have to say thanks for all of your input. I thought I was the only one in the world struggling with this problem. I've also researched that if you have an IUD that may be the cause of the BV as well. I've been taking one garlic pill twice a day. One in the morning and one at night. I've also been drinking a probiotic drink that has lots of bacteria that's similar to yogurt. I consume one every morning. So far for about a month, I've noticed some changes. I have little to no odor after intercourse and after my cycle. The discharge has decreased significantly! Hardly any at all."

I went through the terrible ordor that came through my clothes, more discharge than normal(went through a lot of panty liners) and minor vaginal itch. I've tried taking Folic Acid and Acidophillus as well as douching with Peroxide and water but the smell, irritation and discharge would come back in a couple of days. About three weeks ago before I started my cycle I inserted a capsule of Golden Seal(an anti-biotic used to cure infections) into my vagina every night before I went to sleep and wore a panty liner to keep from getting discharge stains in my underwear from the Golden Seal leaking out. It has been 3 weeks and there's no odor, no irritation and my discharge went back to normal. It's almost time for my cycle to begin again and there's still no signs of BV. Golden Seal can be bought at any Health food store and I advice all women who are having problems with BV to try it!"

1 WORKED TEMPORARILY
[YEA] 01/07/2009: Erin from Staten Island, New York writes: "Hibiclens is a soap used in hospitals.
I too thought that I had Bacterial Vaginosis. I had a yellow discharge with no odor, having to change underwear frequently. I went to doctor after doctor and finally discovered I actually had VAGINAL STREP B. It is very similar to BV and is a natural bacteria found in our bodies but can overgrow. I my case, the use of flagyl, diflucan and clindesse in excess to try to cure severe vaginal itching left me with no itching, but this strep and yellow discharge. This is something that often plagues pregnant women and can be dangerous to a baby. But I'm not pregnant and since it's not itchy or anything besides an ugly yellow discharge, the gyno really didn't want to treat it! Penicillen was tried and failed, yellow yellow yellow! Grr!
So after tons of reading I discovered Hibiclens. It is a soap found next to Iodine in CVS or any pharmacy. It is used in Europe as a douche to end Strep B in the place of Penicillen and I suspect it could work for BV too, since these are both bacteria. You simply add one part Hibiclens and 20 parts water. I just got a Summers Eve douche bottle and emptied it, added an inch of Hibiclens and the rest water. I douched, it felt extremely clean and so far one douche and I seem normal. I also shower with it and dilute it to clean down there a bit after regular soap every morning. This is used in Europe exclusively and has helped bacteria lessen for many so I've read. Seems to be working for me, I'll keep you posted Worth a try for BV sufferers!"
EC: "There are many different groups of streptococci bacteria. Group A strep, or Streptococcus pyogenes, causes strep throat and skin infections, including necrotizing fasciitis, commonly known as the "flesh-eating bacteria" infection. Group B strep, or Streptococcus agalactiae, harmlessly colonizes the genital tract of up to 40 percent of women. Although the bacteria are present, they do not cause disease. Certain groups of people are susceptible to infectious disease from Group B strep, however. They include newborns, women who have just given birth, and certain other adults, usually those who have underlying medical problems." http://yourtotalhealth.ivillage.com/group-b-strep-in-vagina.html
[WORKED TEMPORARILY] 01/25/2009: Erin from Staten Island, NY replies: "I hope that you can put the following information under a new category:
Group Strep B
Hibiclens douche did work for me temporarily but not permanently.
I did alot of reading on different vitamins and supplements that helped many women with group strep b and that were recommended by midwives. I got group strep b with overuse of antibiotics (not pregnant, no underlying conditions). Doctors tried to change the ph of my body but nothing worked till now. Here is what actually worked for me permanently.
2 pills twice a day- Can be found the health food store.
Grapefruit Seed Extract
Super Echinacea
Bee Propolis
PH-Basic caplets (restores PH)
Colloidal Silver
Vitamin C (1000mg)
Within hours my condition cleared. From yellow discharge to white and clear and much much less. People also use garlic tablets, but I haven't tried that. Hope this helps."
EC: We'll add a new page in the next week or so for Group Strep B.
10/26/2009: Lynn from Elmira, Ny replies: "u say u took 2 pills 2 times a day. to help with strep b (get from health food store.) then theres a list of pills. what 2 pills did you take or do you take all of them? grapefruit seed extract, super echinacen, bee propolis, ph-basic caplets (restore ph), colloidal silver, vitamin c (1000 mg)."
EC: Looks like it is a list of the ingredients found in one supplement.

08/27/2009: Angie from Albany, Georgia writes: "I have suffered from BV off and on for a couple of years. After finding this website, I starting using some of the remedies listed here..such as the hydrogen peroxide douche, washing the outside of my vagina with peroxide after bathing, taking probiotics, b-complex, cranberry supplements, garlic supplements, vit D, folic acid, and echinea (spelling may be wrong). All of this was working well, no scent or discharge throughout the day or morning, everything was just great for the last month until 4 days ago I noticed a strong onion smell from down there which was different from the fish smell before, but no discharge, so I went to a local drugstore to buy the messy gel that eliminates order (and really works by the way, but only temporarily) and I found a hot new item. It is a Homeopathic BV Treatment and IT WORKS. It is not messy at all and very easy to insert. There are 6 tablets with 6 inserts to use. The tablets are oval shaped and firm not soft and mushy. Just insert one tablet at bed time for 6 days. In three days, I can say this works better than the peroxide douche. I would urge everyone to try it. Also, at the same time I started using this bv treatment, I started using a ph balanced face wash to wash my vagina area in the shower intead of using soap. I am still taking my supplements as maintenance.
Thanks for posting all of the great remedies on this site. It was a big help and a lot of inspiration for me."

It is embarrasing because it just comes out of the blue. Today your fine and then the next day its like a fishy smell followed by this thick yet frothy discharge. I followed one persons suggestion with the tampon dipped in 3% hydrogen peroxide. I tried it and i'll be dangonit............it worked. I am a happy camper. Now i'll have to see how long it will last. Just to know I dont have to go the dr's office is great. No it didn't burn at all but i did feel it bubbling. Understand that each individual is different. As the 3% hydrogen peroxide dipped in the tampon worked for me, someone else a little more sensitive may have to add additional water to the peroxide."

[YEA] 11/12/2009: Icantfly from Somewhere In, Nj, USA writes: "I started getting BV within a few months of seeing my now-fiance. For some reason I never got it before-- I have a feeling I'm allergic to semen because before him I never had vaginal contact with semen before. I thought he gave me an STI (I have trust issues), but then I found out from the gyno I had BV. She prescribed me antibiotics and that flagyl stuff (which tasted horrible). This didn't work--not even for a little while. The BV never went away. I started looking up cures and came upon this website.
I have to say I was at first reluctant to try hydrogen peroxide "down there" but I did some research on it, and it seemed fine (plus I was at the end of my wits). I used a douche of half hydrogen peroxide and half luke warm water at first. I also started taking a multivitamin that is folic acid fortified as well as one acidophilus capsule a day (I found them 2 bottles for $5 at the drug store). I never used a douche before and I have a feeling I was using it wrong because it only gave me temporary relief. I then decided to saturate a tampon first with luke warm water then with a bunch of hydrogen peroxide (I didn't really measure it, just made sure it was saturated and that the hydrogen peroxide was the second thing I poured on it). I then inserted it and waited 5-10 minutes. It tingled on the inside (but didn't hurt)and I heard it fizzing. On the outside it burned but I think it's because my BV had made my outer genitalia quite sensitive. The burning subsided after a little while however. When I pulled it out there was a lot of yellowish discharge on the tampon. I sniffed it (seems gross but it had to be done) and it didn't smell fishy or anything (BTW, my BV is weird, sometimes it smells funky and sometimes it doesn't, but at that time, it was DEF smelling funky before I inserted the tampon). So the peroxide got rid of the smell. That was a good start. I continued the tampon for 3 days, 2-3 times a day (at least once in the morning and once at night, sometimes once in the afternoon). I also wiped the outside of my genitalia occasionally with diluted hydrogen peroxide on a folded piece of toilet paper. The discharge was less and less each time and by the 4th day VOILA! No discharge! It was amazing! I'm very happy. I haven't had sex yet but I plan to use the peroxide saturated tampon to clean out down there after sex and I am also going to minimize my contact with hubby's semen. This is all very recent so I might update later with how it's working out, but as for now I'm very thrilled with the results.
Don't hesitate to try, and don't give up if it doesn't work the first day or two. It's like a regimen of medication, and you have to do it for a few days before you see the results!"

[YEA] 11/04/2009: Jane from London, England writes: "Recovered from BV
I got BV about 6 weeks ago. I'd been diagnosed with Thrush (yeast infection for the Americans) and was using Canesten cream internally. I stopped using it when I got my period and had noticed an improvement. I got BV for the first time as my period was ending - I have no idea if it was related to the Canesten but thought it was worth mentioning because it was the only thing that was different from usual. I noticed the smell at work and took ages to work out it was me - I ended up in the toilet with all my clothes off checking the armpits of my top and was horrified to discover it was coming from my knickers. I have to say I tried everything possible to get rid of this smell - it was horrific - I bought acidophilis, I ate some, I put one in my hoohoo and it felt really wrong and made no difference (but it was a powdery one - not the good ones I've read about here) and I took the antibiotics. I also took garlic tablets and folic acid (in the quantities on the jars) Over the week the smell reduced and then disappeared but I still had a constant feeling that I was cold and wet down there. Whenever I stood up I could feel it and was super paranoid that there was discharge in my knickers and that it would smell. In England we don't have enormous drug stores with all the things you need - I had to buy hydrogen peroxide from Ebay! By this time it was about 3 weeks from when I first smelt the terrible smell.
I took the advice from this site and took a large tampon with the plastic applicator and replaced it with a small tampon. I filled 1/2 a shot glass with 3% hydrogen peroxide solution and 1/2 with tap water. I soaked the tampon in this and left it inside me for 30 mins. I did this for 7 nights. On a couple of the nights I used the applicator as a funnel, rolled onto my shoulders and put the left over liquid inside me for a few minutes and let it out over the bath. I know this is very graphic but the descriptions on this site really helped me - you can't just buy a douche in England - not where I shop anyway, so it's hard to know how to make it work.
The cold and wet feeling went completely. It hasn't returned yet thank god.
I'm so grateful to this website. Everyone's experience helped me so much - but mostly it helped me to persevere when it didn't feel like it was working. For me it took quite a long time for the wet feeling to go completely. I am so happy now. I've been unlucky with my sexual health and suffer from cystitis and thrush a lot and the BV on top of that really upset me, but now that's cured and I can concentrate on sorting out the other two (have already bought Apple Cider Vinegar and Alka Selzer - I feel like I can take them all on now!!)
Thanks so much!"

[BETTER BUT NOT CURED] 10/24/2009: Hislove from Chaska, Mn writes: "I'm 34 years old and didn't know that I had BV until last week. I knew something was wrong but didn't know it was BV until I finally said ENOUGH IS ENOUGH. I was done with wearing pantiliners every day of the month just so I didn't end up with wet pants in the store or something because I was leaking secretion and not pleasant smelling secretion. Musty, if you will. I was done with smelling like fish the minute my husband and I would "interact". I was done with the smell lingering for two days after. I was done with having to wait to have sex until my crotch was "decent enough" to get near. Done with the wetness and just generally done. I did the over the counter yeast infection test and saw that my ph level was higher then it should be. Read the paperwork that came with it and researched the "what it could be" things. Found this site and a couple of others (medical sites) and realized you all were saying all the same things I was. I'M NOT ALONE. Thank God. I felt that I was just generally less clean then everyone else. Everything short of shoving a scubber "up there" I was as clean as anyone else.
I read about all the pills and food things and just felt overwhelmed. I then read about eating yogurt and the H202 douche and figured "I like eating yogurt but H202 in my woohoo? That's kinda scary cus I've seen how it bubbles and fizzes when I put earrings in it, do I really want that in me?" Answer: YES!!! Last night I was so desperate to just spend a "fun filled, worry free" evening with my husband that I grabbed a douche, emptied it, filled it half with H202 and half tap water. Jumped in the shower, did what I needed to do then filled it with tap water and did it again. Did the "finger test". Not great but not gone. So I thought "Screw it, I grabbed the bottle of H202, filled it 3/4 full and added a smidge of water (just to make me feel better about the chemicals inside me) and did what I needed to do. No second flush with water. LET THE ANGELS SING AND THE LIGT SHINE DOWN.... I DIDNT SMELL. NOT EVEN A LITTLE! My husband and I (warning: get explicit here) started the night with him "finger and taste testing" and he said "PERFECT". We went at it and NO SMELL NOTHING ZIP ZERO ZILCH. Even after... Even today... I almost cried last night when we were done and again this morning. First time in YEARS that I didn't dread it. Even as I sit here typing on my laptop, sitting pretzel style, NO SMELL!!!!
I dont know if it will last, but I dont care. I'm 100% willing to buy H202 by the gallon if I need to and whenever I smell it coming on... I'm killing it. I am also adding 2 yogurts a day to my diet to help keep it at bay and I also found AZO. A vitamin thing to help regulate the ph levels. One pill a day was more simple to me then a full round of all the other stuff that was mentioned and a lot cheaper.
In short (I know it's too late for that (o: ) but don't be afraid, just give it a try. There is no "cure" for BV but there is a way to heal the symptoms. Try different things until you find what works for you. For me, I am IN LOVE with H202! If you have any questions what-so-ever, please get a hold of me, I am more then willing to help in any way I can. Sometimes, just knowing you're no the only one is a HUGE relief. I will keep you all posted as my symptoms do what they do!

Me and my boyfriend have sex at least once or twice a week, and this smell is so embarrasing, it comes and goes, but sometimes it is really bad, and i just want to crawl under a rock. He does not say anything because he probably don't want to hurt my feelings, but i can just imagine what he is thinking. I went to the doctor and was prescribed medication that only worked for a short time, so now i am facing the same issue. I am going to try the peroxide and I Pray literally that it works. Thanks Ladies."

[BETTER BUT NOT CURED] 10/15/2009: Greenissexy from Bluegrass, Ky writes: "Hydrogen Peroxide Douche cured my Bacterial Vaginosis!
Sunday, I started having this fishy odor for the first time in my entire life. I am in my mid-20s. Before then, I had never douched nor had any feminine problems down there. I'm thinking this odor came from stress, eating poorly that week, and drinking too much alcohol that weekend, plus I tried a hard liquor that I've never had before. I was thinking about setting up an appointment with a gynocologist but decided to do some online research after "self-diagnosing" myself with BV. I came across this site and decided to give it a try.
So yesterday (Wednesday), for the first time in my life, I douched. My mother had this a summer's eve douche in the bathroom. I took one of those unused bottles, unwraped it, emptied out the solution that was already in it, then rinsed it out, then filled the douche bottle 1/2 with Hydrogen Peroxide and 1/2 with spring water, shook it up, got in the shower, inserted it and squeezed the solution up in there, held the solution inside for 2-3 minutes, then released it out in the shower. Then I did a douche rinse with water. Today (Thursday), I have no odor and no discharge AT ALL!!! I never thought I would be sharing something like this! Hope this encourages someone that is suffering from this odor for a short period of time.
I also did a mouthwash and gargle with Hydrogen peroxide and had fresher breath too!"

I used a small travel douche as an applicator so i don't know if this was one of the cause."

[BETTER BUT NOT CURED] 09/17/2009: Lady Bv Free from Vb, Va writes: "I have suffered from BV forever! Have sex, have period, boom, have BV. I have had to wear pantyliners for YEARS! Everything was tried by the Doc...forget them! I used 3% Hydrogen peroxide, do not dilute. It is already diluted to 3% with buffered water. I douched once and the odor decreased, went to dinner for 2 hrs, then douched before bed with same full strength solution. I had a lil itch and tingle that was not originally there for about 15 mins, then gone. Everything gone. No odor, no discharge, no itch, no redness, no pantyliner, NO EMBARRASSMENT!!! I plan to continue the hydrogen peroxide for 7 days, then start life again. I am soooo very happy I found this site and thank all the women for their testimonies. I am taking a 800 mcg folic acid pill and probiotic daily already for intestinal issues and will continue. But the addition of the 3% Hydrogen Peroxide has been the glory help I have been looking for! I just texted my main squeeze who has had to be on the side lines in bed due to this BV and requested we test the results soon with some great sex(this is what usually induces an attack). I will keep you posted of the future results for I know readers need to know if there is a long-term help, not just a quick partial fix. Good luck to all!"

[YEA] 09/17/2009: Aliasnan from Dallas, Tx writes: "OK ladies, I have read countless fourums on BV trying to find home reamedies. I started having that dreadful fishy odor with LOTS of white cheesey gunk....... the odor only got worse, to the point to where it smelled like reeking dead fish. I never have an unuasual odor, most of the time I am odorless, with occaisonal sweet or normal odor from excercise or arrousal. I shower twice a day, I use a mild soap like baby wash or dove on my vuvla and labia, then just squirt the shower water up as a water douche. This method works great for me and I never had any problems. Anyway, I started having the BV symptoms last Saturday. I tried the salt sitz bath, the vinegar douche, and tea tree oil, although they cut the odor down, it was still there. I also tried the plain yogurt on a tampon overnight, it did cut the odor down but not fully. My instinct was to use peroxide, and so I researched that and found a clinical study where 80% or so of the patients were cured with peroxide. This is what I did: Yesterday, I soaked a tampon in 3% hydrogen peroxide, full stregnth. It made the tampon swell, and it was kinda hard but I had to just shove it up there. I left it in about 30 minutes. Then I did the finger smell test. Wow!!! Only a faint smell of fish. Then, I used a douche of 1/4 perioxide, and 3/4 water. I was always told to never douche with anything but plain water .....I had several GYNS and midwifes say if I feel the need to douche, plain water is always fine, which is why I just use the shower head. Then, I filled a syringe without the needle with straight peroxide, and flushed it up there, twice. The past two nights I've used the yougurt on a tampon, it seems to help also. As of today, there is NO fishy odor, no odor at all! I will use the perioxide tampon method (because douching scares me) for today and tommorow, then maybe once a week for a month to make sure this is really gone. I'll also go ahead and use the yogurt overnight for at least tonight.....it did seem to help. So thats it ladies!! This is how it worked for me ........the yogurt drastically reduced odor over night, and the perioxide cut it out instantly. Good luck , I'll post more if this comes back. I heard alot of good things about ____, and its just so expensive, I hope I don't have to use it. But I'll say this, I will keep some on hand for after intimate moments or cycles so that the PH NEVER gets so thrown off again!!! What a horrendous, embarrasing infection!!!! (I'm pretty sure mine came from semen; after my boyfriend ejaculated inside me for the first time, I was having symptoms that night-if that ever happens again-afterwards I guess it will be time to "refresh".)"
