Hemorrhoid Relief: Top Home Remedies and Causes Explained

Zinc Oxide

Thanks for the great website! I will certainly try some of the suggested remedies. I would also like to share some of my experiences.

First of all, I'm NOT constipated. My bowel movements are remarkably predictable (daily, usually early morning) and strain-free. However, afterward, the hemorrhoids usually appear and will remain distended for hours UNLESS I perform my post-BM "ritual", which consists of lying face down on a flat surface and relaxing completely. I remain in this position for 5 or 10 minutes and during that time I can usually feel the hemorrhoids retract, after which I'm good to go.

This doesn't always work. When it doesn't, I apply a small blob of a product called Desitin. Sorry, I know I'm not supposed to submit product names, but this one is not widely known and is God's gift to hemorrhoid sufferers. It comes in a tube and is a white ointment containing zinc oxide. It won't cure the hemorrhoids, but it makes them a lot easier to live with. Don't confuse it with your toothpaste!

Another thing that has helped a lot: several years ago I visited a friend in Thailand. In that country and, I assume, many other Asian countries, most of the bathrooms are equipped with hoses that are used to clean the rectal area after a bowel movement. They are similar to the sprayers found on many kitchen sinks in the US, and those can probably be adapted for this purpose by a competent plumber or do-it-yourselfer. I brought one back with me from Thailand and I use it to clean up after a BM, followed by lightly patting the area dry with toilet paper. This is MUCH better than wiping with dry toilet paper, which just causes irritation and bleeding. You can also buy toilets with built-in bidets which serve the same purpose.

Also, the best thing ever for me was purchasing a toilet seat bidet. Remove your existing toilet seat and replace with bidet toilet seat to your existing toilet. Search online for one that suits your budget and needs.

I have hemorrhoids for years, on and off. Been using all kinds of natural remedies which helped- olive oil, Rosemary oil, butcher's broom pills, calendula and hamamelis paste. tonight I had such pain I couldn't sleep, got up and found this wonderful site. Thought about buying ACV tomorrow, but eventually tried Listerine (cause I have it at home...) and the relief was almost immediate.Thank you so much for the advice and for this site!

General Feedback
Posted by Sharon (Salt Lake City, Utah) on 12/29/2008

I believe in the natural remedies and so I am open to feedback. I have had constipation off and on for years, and bleed if I eat nuts or get constipated. I have hemorroids and really want to know how to heal them and get my body back to balance. I have been using the Essiac Tea to try to heal the sore rectal area. There is kind of a small scab. I may start using Apple Cider Vinegar. and I know that Castor Oil is good too. I have a tendancy toward candida and I have Epstien Barr and I really want to know what to do. I have dark circles under my eyes and am tired alot and have adrenal fatigue. I sound like a mess. I would love some suggestions.

Olive Oil

I was ready a book on weird and wacky cures but using natural stuff to heal everything and I came across using olive oil for hemorroids. As I had suffered with these and had an operation that failed to help, I decided to try it and it works, I started bleeding one day from behind an decided to use the olive oil and it stopped. The way I do it is soak a tissue in it place it on the area then place a polythene bag over that and then some pants that you are not too fond of and leave in place as long as possible. I have not had any trouble since that day.

I must say i am hooked on your site now and they all seem to work. I have been using using many of your skin remedies and i am glowing.ten years younger at least.

I am trying Preparation H mixed with 3 drops Lavender oil and 2 drops Eucalyptus oil. It tingles but it helps disinfect and heal skin tissue. I also have been using suppositories. I have been using Lavender oil for the last ten years on scrapes, pimples and small cuts. Amazingly my skin doesn't scar when I use it for 3 times a day for 5 or 6 days!

BTW, ACV with garlic diluted in water is an excellent way to clear out bacteria and viruses in the colon as an enema. You will need to replace good bacteria with probiotic yogurt or friendly flora supplements.

Raw Potato

I can tell you why the RED potato with peel works for hemorrhoids.

There is a chemical compound in the peel of a red only potato that causes the blood vessels to constrict, they shrink and pull back internally where they belong, this works very well.

I didn't get hemorrhoids until after giving birth and I suffer terribly from them. I have yet to find a great cure but will try some of these things. I have found though that having a tsp of fiber powder (not the pills...they don't work) in the morning and at night and eating a banana once a day makes your stool soft, and I can still eat meat and all that stuff your not supposed to. Makes all things come out a lot easier but you have to take your time going. I'm not cured..they come back when I forget to take the fiber but it is a relief and allows you to eat the things you want for the most part..at least for me.

Hi Kea,

After I read what you said about trying horse chestnut, and I gave it a try, and It worked charmedly, 2 days after using it, 3 times a day, I could feel it was getting smaller, 3 days I didn't feel it anymore. I will drink it for a couple more days to make sure it's really gone away...

I am very happy now... I had been so stressed out for almost 1 1/2 month, I did try the medicine from my country, It was working before, but this time it just didn't work... And I ate very healthy, juice, everything soft, went to the doctor.. Spent a lot of time and money... Thank God... The hemorroids is gone...

but my hemorroids was small, it was just getting worse, I tried ACV also, but it only took away the pain, then I realized that the hemorroids got a scar (wound), then I applied some cream from my warehouse for the cut/wound, It healed the scar fast.

Thanks Kea and earthclinic...

I discovered that fresh Jewelweed stopped the itching in one application so for winter I made a tincture of jewelweed and ethyl alcohol 2:1. This worked well better than the raw plant and it is also an anti pruritic better than cortisone.

I am pregnant (8 months) and have tried nearly everything to help the pain and discomfort of my frequent external hemorrhoids. This was the only thing that actually helped. I did have to use the "technique" about once daily for 4-5 days, but they healed quicker with no more pain or discomfort. Thanks so much!

OMG, I hope one of these remedies work, I'm in so much pain I can't sleep. There's no position where it doesn't hurt like hell, it's been like this for weeks. I'm terrified of surgery and have no insurance either, and I don't want to become addicted to painkillers. Hope I don't have to spend the rest of my life like this.

Fresh Radish Juice

I suffered from stage 2-3 hemorrhoids few years ago. I tried several medicines prescribed by doctors but nothing helped me.

What worked for me is radish juice. I took radish juice around 150 to 200 ml every day morning and evening on empty stomach continuously for 4 days. I

started feeling the reduction in pain and shrinking of hemorrhoids from day two itself. In 4 days my hemorrhoids gone completely. I am sure this remedy will work for all. I also recommended this remedy to couple of my friends and they too get cured very fast. I recommend this to every one. Radish juice, immediately after juicing have a very strong taste. I use to drink it immediately after juicing.

Those who cannot handle the taste, take the juice 30 minutes after juicing ( If you leave the radish juice for for some time, its strong taste will be come mild to some what sweeter ).

Good Luck.

You mean 150- 200ml twice per day? or 75- 100ml twice per day?

Melatonin

Hello Maribelacuna,

for hemorrhoids, if you don't mind a few hours of good sleep at night, give Melatonin a try. Do not take melatonin if you have to drive. Melatonin was a game changer for me and I only took it a week or two. I have to be alert at any moment to pray.

In case you have not heard of Melantonin before, it is a supplement you can purchase at the Vitamin store, on even on line. I used 3mg and extra some days, but extra meant extra sleep also, so keep that in mind.

I do not recall if it helped what I originally took it for, because I did not take it long enough. But I do know that it healed my hemorrhoids.

I have been doing research on Fargelin. I purchased some from Amazon because of all of the good reviews but was worried about the arsenic deal. I took it for the first time yesterday but did not do it three pills three times a day. I thought I would work my way up to that. I was curious about how long you took it and if you had any side effects.

Sitz Bath

Use cold water therapy. Dip your privates in cold water for at least two minutes up to four times a day. Either fill the tub with just enough cold water to cover the down under, or find a roomy bucket to sit in. I tried a plastic sitz bath from Amazon but prefer the tub. A roomy bucket was really good but was cutting into my hips. Result: no pain and healing. Dry well afterwards and put up with the undressing necessary.

No cost involved. Namaste, Om

I have had incredible pain with my hemorroids for a long time, since I gave birth to my six year old. Of course they always seemed better every time I arrived at my doc's office. I have tried ACV, but CANNOT stomach it without throwing up violently immediately afterwards, and it stings horribly if I apply it topically to my hemorroids. I have tried witch hazel, which has worked temporarily, for only about twenty minutes or so before the pain has come back. I am currently an Alt. Med. student, and have poured through my books looking for ANYTHING that may help, and a cold compress of Yarrow ground in a mortar and pestle with a tiny bit of water has helped with the pain and inflammation a lot! I lay down with the compress applied for about 20 minutes, and it eases the inflammation, stops the bleeding, and eases the pain exponentially! I can actually make a bowel movement afterwards!! I keep excess fluid from the mixture in a container in the fridge to dab at my hemorroids after bowel movements, and to keep it moist, which helps a lot. Yarrow also kills bacteria, which may cause an infection if you have a bleeding wound on your hemm. I hope that this helps someone. But remember, it is not a cure, it helps treat your symptoms. Once you have a hemorroid, it never goes away, it just shrinks and stops causing problems. You may not see it and it may not hurt, but it is still there.

Potassium brings relief to me. What have you tried?

Yarrow
Posted by Guinnevtra (Memphis, US) on 10/11/2014

I have been taking potassium for a long time, I have very low blood pressure and one of my teachers had mentioned that it helps with that. I don't really see any difference using potassium. It is painful enough that I may visit my doc again. I really rather not, but TN has laws about ND's, and they can't practice here.
