The Health Benefits of DMSO: What You Need to Know

| Modified on Jul 21, 2024

DMSO, or dimethyl sulfoxide, is a colorless liquid used as a powerful solvent. DMSO is a natural substance that is produced by trees and is obtained through the processing of wood pulp. Over the years, DMSO has been the subject of numerous studies, and many researchers have found that it has many potential health benefits.

In this article, we will explore the well-researched health benefits of DMSO.

Health Benefits of DMSO

One of the most well-known health benefits of DMSO is its ability to relieve pain. DMSO is a powerful anti-inflammatory agent, and it has been shown to reduce pain and swelling in various conditions. For example, DMSO has been used to treat arthritis, back pain, and even headaches. In one study, researchers found that DMSO effectively reduced pain in patients with osteoarthritis of the knee.

DMSO works by blocking the transmission of pain signals to the brain. It also reduces inflammation and swelling, which can help to alleviate pain. Additionally, DMSO can enhance the effects of other pain medications, such as aspirin and ibuprofen.

1. Wound Healing

Another well-researched health benefit of DMSO is its ability to promote wound healing. DMSO has been shown to increase blood flow to the affected area, which can help to promote healing. It also has antimicrobial properties, which can help to prevent infections.

In one study, researchers found that DMSO effectively promoted the healing of diabetic foot ulcers. In another study, DMSO was used to treat burns, and it was found to be effective in reducing pain and promoting healing.

2. Skin Health

DMSO has also been found to have numerous benefits for skin health. It has been shown to have moisturizing properties, and it can help reduce wrinkles and fine lines. Additionally, DMSO can help to reduce the appearance of scars and stretch marks.

In one study, researchers found that DMSO effectively reduced hyperpigmentation in patients with melasma. Melasma is a condition that causes dark patches on the skin, and it is often difficult to treat. DMSO was found to be effective in reducing the appearance of these patches.

3. Brain Health

DMSO has been found to have potential benefits for brain health. It has been shown to have antioxidant properties, which can help to protect the brain from damage. Additionally, DMSO can help to improve blood flow to the brain, which can help to enhance cognitive function.

4. Strokes

DMSO has been the subject of numerous studies exploring its potential health benefits. One area where DMSO has shown promise is in the treatment of strokes. Strokes are a medical emergency that occurs when blood flow to the brain is interrupted, causing brain cells to die. They can lead to a range of physical and cognitive impairments, depending on the severity of the stroke and the area of the brain affected. Here's what research has found about the potential benefits of DMSO for stroke treatment.

Brain Protection

One of the primary ways DMSO may help in stroke treatment is by protecting the brain. When blood flow to the brain is interrupted during a stroke, it can cause a cascade of events that lead to the death of brain cells. This is known as ischemic injury. DMSO has been found to have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that can help to protect the brain against ischemic injury. In animal studies, DMSO has been shown to reduce the size of brain lesions caused by strokes and improve neurological function.

Blood Flow

Another way DMSO may help in stroke treatment is by improving blood flow to the brain. During a stroke, blood flow to the brain is interrupted, which can lead to brain damage. DMSO has been found to have vasodilatory effects, meaning it can widen blood vessels and improve blood flow to the brain (2). In animal studies, DMSO has been found to increase cerebral blood flow and oxygenation, which can help to reduce the severity of strokes (3).

Inflammation is a key driver of brain damage during strokes. When blood flow to the brain is interrupted, it can trigger an inflammatory response that can cause further damage to brain cells. DMSO has been found to have potent anti-inflammatory properties that can help to reduce inflammation in the brain. In animal studies, DMSO has been found to reduce the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines in the brain and protect against ischemic injury.

Finally, DMSO may also have potential benefits for stroke recovery. When brain cells die during a stroke, it can lead to permanent physical and cognitive impairments. DMSO has been found to promote the growth and survival of neurons, which can help to improve recovery after a stroke (5). In animal studies, DMSO has been found to improve neurological function and reduce motor deficits after strokes.

While more research is needed to understand the potential benefits of DMSO for stroke treatment fully, the evidence suggests that it could be a valuable tool in reducing the severity of strokes, protecting the brain, and improving recovery.

5. Anti-inflammatory Properties

DMSO has potent anti-inflammatory properties, making it useful in treating arthritis, tendonitis, and bursitis. Research has shown that DMSO can reduce inflammation by inhibiting the production of cytokines and other pro-inflammatory molecules.

6. Antimicrobial Properties

DMSO has been shown to have antimicrobial properties against a wide range of bacteria, viruses, and fungi. It is effective against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria and can be used to treat infections such as urinary tract infections, skin infections, and dental infections.

7. Cardiovascular Health

DMSO has been found to have potential benefits for cardiovascular health. It can help to lower blood pressure, reduce cholesterol levels, and improve blood flow to the heart. DMSO can also help prevent blood clots' formation, which can reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke.

8. Cancer Treatment

Some evidence suggests that DMSO may have potential benefits in treating cancer. It has been shown to inhibit the growth of cancer cells in vitro, and can enhance the effectiveness of chemotherapy drugs.

9. Pain Management

DMSO is effective in managing pain caused by various conditions, including neuropathy, fibromyalgia, and reflex sympathetic dystrophy. It works by blocking nerve pain signals, reducing inflammation, and increasing blood flow to the affected area.

10. Bladder Health

DMSO has been found to have potential benefits for bladder health. It can help to reduce inflammation and pain associated with bladder conditions such as interstitial cystitis. In one study, researchers found that DMSO reduced pain and improved urinary function in patients with interstitial cystitis.

11. Sports Injuries

DMSO is effective in treating sports injuries such as sprains and strains. It can reduce inflammation and pain and promote healing. In one study, researchers found that DMSO reduced pain and improved the range of motion in patients with tennis elbow.

12. Digestive Health

DMSO has been found to have potential benefits for digestive health. It can help to reduce inflammation and oxidative stress in the digestive tract, which can help to alleviate symptoms of conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease. In one study, researchers found that DMSO reduced inflammation and improved symptoms in patients with ulcerative colitis.

13. Dental Health

DMSO has been shown to have antimicrobial properties that can help to prevent dental infections. It can also reduce inflammation and pain associated with dental conditions such as periodontitis. In one study, researchers found that DMSO reduced pain and inflammation in patients with acute pulpitis.

14. Eye Health

DMSO has been found to have potential benefits for eye health. It can help to reduce inflammation and protect against oxidative stress in the eye. In one study, researchers found that DMSO reduced inflammation and improved visual function in patients with uveitis.

I have been using DMSO for acne and it's the only thing that has seemed to help reduce the inflammation and really help with my severe acne. It does make my skin very dry and flaky, but if I use an oil free moisturizer it seems ok.

I have been using the DMSO morning and night and I just roll it over my face before my other skin care products. There is a slight/mild tingle and stinging for about 5 mins. I am also using on top of the DMSO the Jan Marnin Bioglycolic Bioclear Lotion which I think is working well together with the DMSO. I'm not able to use Benzyol Peroxide because I am allergic to it, so the DMSO has been an amazing cure for my acne. I truly can't live with out it. If you are suffering from acne I would definitely recommend trying the DMSO. I use the roll on 70% DMSO 30% aloe or the 70% DMSO 30% distilled water. It's $10.00 on Amazon .:)

I 'd be careful with DMSO when using typical skin care products which most of the time have ingredients one doesn't want in its system.

DMSO is a good carrier Gri Court, that is why you should be careful.

Make yourself a solution of DMSO and a good aloe vera gel (1 cup aloe to 1/4 cup DMSO). You might also add 1/4 cup of colloidal silver if you want. Use this on your face and you won't have the drying and flakiness because the aloe vera counteracts that.

I have arthritis in my hands and wrists and bad knees pretty bad, not immobile but really flares up on occasion. I have found that mixing 2 large heaping spoon fulls of Blu-Emu extra strength with 5 droppers of DMSO and 5 droppers of refined Emu oil together will make the pain practically go away for 10-12 hrs. The DMSO really helps the ointment absorb into the skin much faster and works along with the ointment really fast. Give it a try, can't hurt!

I put my 50/50 DMSO & distilled water into a 2 oz. glass bottle with sprayer and spray the areas I want to use it on. I then rub it in. I have been using it for 3 days this way with no irritation anywhere, including my hands that I don't wash after. I haven't noticed a ton of results yet but I think some minor benefits so far. I am also adding a pinch of Borax in my coffee in the morning. I had to take ibuprofen today because I couldn't walk on my swollen, inflamed feet. How long before I see more results? What is the average time for these protocols to work.

swollen feet are a symptom of the kidneys not working well.

That's correct but also might be a symptom of a weak heart muscle- CHF

I have been using and recommending DMSO for many years! It cured my arthritis, and has cured three people I know of cancer! Yes, even stage four cancer! DMSO is a miracle drug! I do not recommend drug to be taken for preventative reasons, but I think DMSO can even help to clean the arteries and heal the heart, as I have also lived with an irregular heartbeat all my life but I've noticed that after taking the DMSO for my arthritis my constant irregular heartbeat has also vanished and now only once in a while feel my heart out of rhythm and even them not as pronounced as before!

I've been an herbalist most of my life and DMSO and wild lettuce have impressed me more than anything else!

Any experience using DMSO and Colloidal Silver or Cesium Chloride?

First, I'm praying for your cancer reversal! Second, how are you taking the DMSO and Vitamin C? From my understanding, DMSO must be between 1-2% if taken orally to work. Externally must be diluted to 95-97% with distilled water to work...

Thank you!

Hello Kenny!

I have a friend with lung cancer, I am not sure what stage. She has been taking Rick Simpson Oil, but recent tests show new tumors and tumor growth. I once read a study showing Oil of Oregano killed lung cancer tumors AND encouraged new tissue regeneration. I am searching now for how to use DMSO with RSO or Oil of Oregano to help her... Can you please explain the protocol your friends with cancer used?

Thank you so much for sharing this!

Tumors return because they're still in the bloodstream. Dr. Christopher (master herbalist) says. He has a 'blood stream' formula that cleans the bloodstream and a formula that cleans out the bowel too- so that all the c.a.n.c.e.r cells can be eliminated out. Type in herbal legacy Dr. christopher tumors. You'll see what he says there. Hope this helps- it's VITAL information.

Best to detox the whole system I'd say- liver and all.

Hi Amy,

There have been some reports of Albendazole and Mebendazole, over the counter human and animal anti-worming medications with a long history of use and generally considered safe being involved in complete remissions of lung cancer. Two cases in point include a man called Joe Tippens, who writes a blog about his experience at and a case being treated by Care Oncology in the U.K. with Mebendazole.

Joe Tippens brought this medication to light when on the suggestion of his veterinarian started taking it to address his stage 4 terminal lung cancer with positive results. There are rumours online that he has passed but as far as I can tell he is still alive and active as he has recently added a new video on his blog at my cancer story rocks.

There is also information on Pubmed regarding these medications including discussions about safety and dosages including a clinical trial with Mebendazole with a range of glioma types that has been ongoing for almost 10 years, and now due to be completed in 2022 - 2023.

I hope this information reaches you in a timely way and assists you with what you are looking for,

Kind regards. :)

Rob: See on the right side of screen a mini-menu which reads "DMSO Natural Remedies" it has the overview, editor's choice, and under popular conditions it has DMSO Application Tips, Multiple Cures and Back Pain.

I opened the application tips link in a separate window. There's a lot of info there.

If you are going to take it internally, then the best way may be to try and diffuse it with any essential oil of your choice.

Diffusing goes right into the blood stream within one minute and crosses the BB barrier without losing potency through digestion.

If you want to take internally, then you can buy enteric coated capsules and put a drop into each. This ensures it survives digestion and opens about 20% the way down into the small intestine.

Now, I have not done this personally but I am trained as CNHP and Certified Aromatherapist.

I also own a business in Indonesia that produces Essential oils and know that diffusion is the quickest and most effective way to treat the over all body.

GARY, ORH here, and again we have the blind leading the blind. My knowledge comes from Dr Jacob's books and he was the consultant to Crown Z, which did almost all of the R& D work. I worked for Crown Z in the '60s and with the supervisor of the CZ plant. Instead of speculating about DMSO, quote from Dr Jacob's books. Then, we are getting it straight from the horse's mouth. Besides, DMSO does not need anything to get into your body. You missed that a mile. You are right about bypassing your digestion system and the reason I use magnesium transdermally. I don't need an upset stomach.

I am not familiar with Dr. Jacobs's work, so I will look into his wisdom.

By not needing anything to get into the body, what are you referring to?

Aromatically is the fasted way for anything to enter the body.

Transdermally, your are fighting through 4 layers of skin, 5 on the palms and feet.

I do not see it as possible for the full dose to make it through the skin. Plus the constant uptake to keep the dose high enough to the area applied.

Thanks for the info on Jacobs and I will research it.

DMSO can not cure RA.

Alleviate the inflammation, yes.

RA is an autoimmune disease and the only way to remedy this is to test for the triggers (auto antibodies) and eliminate them to turn off the body attacking itself.

Cancer lies on the spectrum of AI disease.

You should be tested for it. AI shuts down the immune response and your body cannot fight cancer with the innate immune system.

Functional Medicine treats immunity issues as it relates to chronic disease.

They said the same thing about my dad, nearly 2 years ago & they were rushing us to make a decision about starting treatment. We decided to leave alone that 'Huge Tumor' (which would only give him no more than 4-7 months' time) that they were so concerned about & guess what? once the regular enlarged prostate issues subsided (with a little help from healthy diet & natural remedies such as Frankincense ('Boswellia') it turned out to be NOTHING after all. It's a long story, can't get into it now but suffice it to say 1- The details alone would prove how much safer we are to leave some 'cancers' alone. And 2- Big-pharma/Medical Establishment makes lots of intentional & unintentional mistakes. ***One of the doctors even said he was gonna bleed to death unless he was rushed to surgery right then & there during one of our routine visits. You should've seen the scene he raised & the drama queen he turned into just because I questioned him a few good questions. Again, that was TWO years ago. ;) ***

Please, listen to this doctor. You will understand everything. Also, you'll learn about DMSO & all other natural solutions. On his youtube channel he's got 10000 of videos of him speaking to other holistic chiropractors on every health related issue.

BTW He's in Southern California.

I've been suffering with a very large bone spur under my Achilles tendon on my heel. Every step feels like a knife stabbing me. I read about DMSO and bones spurs and decided to buy some. I got the gel 70% mixed with aloe vera. I've been putting it on for 2 days and I cannot believe the difference! I am thrilled! The only thing that bothers me is that when I put it on my heel, I have a tightness in my chest that I don't normally have. I take thyroid meds and am wondering if it is increasing the absorption. I also take several BP meds and I don't think it's bothered those. Has anyone else felt it has affected them in this way? And, should I dilute it with distilled water or what. I think this is really really effective and would like to continue using it but don't want to mess myself up.

Replied by Nick

DMSO is known to potentate other substances, such as drugs. The Blood pressure drugs will be much more effective in getting into the cells, and work better. I read a person could use up to 10 times less medication and get the same results. Make sure you don't take the BP meds at the same time you apply the DMSO. Make sure they are separated by 4 or more hours.

Blood Pressure drugs and DMSO should never be mixed together or taken with each other. The pressure will fall too low.

If you are brave enough, you could take 1/10th BP drug and DMSO and monitor BP to see what the effects are. You might even be able to stop taking the BP drugs all together with time and experience. Just be careful.

Replied by Jorge
(Redmond, Wa)

DO NOT DO WHAT NICK SUGGESTED. First of all, taking your blood pressure medication with DMSO will cause the amount consumed to rapidly filter into your bloodstream, which may cause a precipitous drop in your blood pressure. Second of all, blood pressure medications are designed to reach a certain concentration in your blood for a given amount of time; even though it will be more rapidly absorbed, the final concentration, if you use 1/10th of a pill, will be 1/10th of normal. This is a bad idea all around.

Alicia, I am on thyroid scripts also. I felt anxious first taking the DMSO but at the tine I had a dose of CBD oil in my system also. DMSO of what I have read states that you must be careful because the DMSO will increase the efficacy of the other meds that you are on. I cut my thryoid meds down to half the dose and so far everything is fine, in that respect. Think about that with your BP meds, if that may be better for you while on DMSO. Otherwise, it is like you are increasing your BP meds which may be harmful. Chest tightening is a concern that should not be taken lightly. I had that happen once when taking Imitrex a few years back and the dr took me off that med. I was not on DMSO back then so it had nothing to do with that. Good health to you!

I use it on my bone spur also. Most definitely makes it feel better. Haven't had any chest issues though. Only thing comes back when I start walking on it the next day. It is 70,30 also

CRYSTAL,,,,,,,,, yep, DMSO is a miracle compound that I learned of first hand when I worked for CZ back in the 60's. At that time it was made in the CZ Bogalusa, La. paper mill. The Super was a friend of mine and related lots of stories about the employees that worked in that area. None ever had a cold or flu. Also, he related how DMSO cured steam burns to his wrists as you say in your post. Like the Good Book says, He has provided all you need.

One of the most amazing treatments I have ever used is DMSO for burns. I have had serious burns and minor burns.

Usually I just open the container and slap a big tablespoon of DMSO on the burn. It is best to do it right away. I keep it on for about 1/2 hr. I keep a jar in my kitchen for the possibilities of getting burned at the stove. It takes the pain away immediately and the pain never comes back. You can apply a little each day for awhile, but I have not found that necessary. I wish every one knew about this as burns can be so painful. And the burns heal up nicely.

It is either Canada or Alaska that they use DMSO in ER for burns. Blessings to all. Pammy

Nope, not Canada. I was burned second degree on most of my right thigh. ER did not use DMSO.

I burned my finger one day at home. I quickly grabbed the DMSO washed my finger, poured it over the finger. The pain and swelling stopped immediately. No subsequent problems. While winter hiking in the Sierras a girl in our group burned her hand on a hot stove. I applied the DMSO from my backpack. She came to me the next morning to say she had no distress at all from the burn.

I also used it on my mother's face when she fell on the cement smashing her glasses and nose. It moved the blood right out. The next day she had yellowing of the skin. Great stuff. I carry it everywhere.

Calcium Deposits

Does anyone have experience or information about massaging DMSO with enzymes to dissolve calcium deposits? There is a patent application on the web about that, at, referencing DMSO and Papain, but has anyone experience with this? Thanks. Leo

Tested 1.0 ounce Papain dissolved into 4 ounce of DMSO gel (90%) applied topically over the spine.

Papain mix applies very sticky; must let it dry before you put on shirt, or it will glue together.

More over, the mix liquifies to a amber goo after two days. I will dispose the prepared mix, and just make 'just enough' mix for daily use. It smells bad when the mix ages.

I may recommend using a salt shaker and apply papain powder directly to DMSO applied to spinal axis.

Results after three days is still unknown. No issues, positive or negative; none is expected until about two weeks daily application.

I just wanted to state that I read a thread about some people in Australia taking a few drops of pure DMSO in a glass of purified water daily and decided to try it. I have pain from soft tissue damage from a few injuries and thought it might help. What I did not expect was that my cronic stuffy nasal passages from allergies would almost instantly clear! The first day it happened I did not attribute it to the DMSO but now after four straight days of being able to breathe fully within minutes of taking it; it is now clear there is no doubt. I have ordered the book recommended here and will see what else I can expect.

2 drops of 99.9% DMSO with 2 drops of reverse osmosis water on a q-tip. Apply to cold sore area. With 1 application, mine was completely gone in 4-6 hours. It was applied within hours of the start of it.

DMSO thins the blood, naturally. Way better than warfarin or coumadin. There are books on it by Naturopathic doctors and such, attesting to its healing qualities. Here is my experience:

Had a hard fall mostly on my shin, it hurt but I got up by myself and walked away as I had errands to do. Got home 2 hrs later, noticed my leg didn't hurt anymore and was surprised to see it had swollen to 1.5x its size! I did icepacks, elevation & acv/epsom salt soaks. I also applied DMSO 4x a day.

About a week later I was on a flight sitting beside a doctor, still swollen. He thought it could be DVT related and told me to see a Dr. Not wanting to take warfarin or coumadin, I stepped up the DMSO (rubbed on leg only) to every 2 hrs, and arranged to drink 3 or 4 750ml bottles of water one afternoon/night, and the next day my leg was back to almost-normal.

I have a good lymph system, I've been told. I wanted to open the dam sluices and get that excess water out! I peed alot that night. Only I could tell there was still a little swelling left at the ankle, which was gone soon after. I boarded my next flight the next day with no problem with my leg.

I haven't seen DMSO mentioned as a blood thinner, so I wanted to mention it is worth asking a Naturopath about and looking into on your own.

Best of Healing, everyone.

Keeping the circulatory system moving is a must -

If you gargle about a shot of DMSO it will help tighten loose teeth, saturate the gums with oxygen while destroying gingivitis bacterium lurking at the gum line & then after a few minutes of swishing "Swallow" Yup, clears the arteries slows or stops Alzheimer's & lots of other goodies Ted raves about - ask & he will tell. But then ya stink like Potato socks or rancid garlic.

Now follow the Borax Baking Soda regime ( & your sweat will smell like a freshly washed baby. Ok, maybe not but you won't stink like Road Kill either.

I have DMSO and want to us it for blood pressure. How would you recommend I take it for best results?

Do you want to raise or lower your blood pressure?

Regarding gargling with DMSO, I've heard you should not put it in the mouth if you have amalgam fillings due to it pulling the mercury into your system. Does the book you refer to mention this? I'm always careful to use a straw when I take it orally.

DMSO and Lugol's Iodine: yea- I think.

After a detoxing bath filled with epsom salts and borax, I mixed some DSMO cream I had with iodine and applied it to my lower back, and then kind of smeared more iodine on my chest. It couldn't had been more than 3 droppers full of 2% lugols and within about 5 minutes I became aware of a slight pain which I realized was my thyroid. It kind of scared me, it didnt really hurt, it was just that I was very aware of it, and had never felt it before. Anyone else experience something like this? I know DSMO acts as a carrier and allows things to be absorbed, the whole blood brain barrier thing..?

You used a couple dropper fulls of 2%, that is a lot! Even after the chernoybl nuclear fallout in europe people close were told to take no more than 1-5 drops a day to protect their thyroids of lugols 2% by medical doctors.
