The Health Benefits of DMSO: What You Need to Know

Acne

I have been using DMSO for acne and it's the only thing that has seemed to help reduce the inflammation and really help with my severe acne. It does make my skin very dry and flaky, but if I use an oil free moisturizer it seems ok.

I have been using the DMSO morning and night and I just roll it over my face before my other skin care products. There is a slight/mild tingle and stinging for about 5 mins. I am also using on top of the DMSO the Jan Marnin Bioglycolic Bioclear Lotion which I think is working well together with the DMSO. I'm not able to use Benzyol Peroxide because I am allergic to it, so the DMSO has been an amazing cure for my acne. I truly can't live with out it. If you are suffering from acne I would definitely recommend trying the DMSO. I use the roll on 70% DMSO 30% aloe or the 70% DMSO 30% distilled water. It's $10.00 on Amazon .:)

How to Store DMSO

WARNING!

My good friend's boyfriend is a professor in sleep research at a university in California. When I was visiting them a few weeks ago, I asked if he used dmso in the lab and if so, how did he store it? He told me that they use dmso in many, many experiments and that they always store it in glass bottles. When I told him that I had recently put some of my dmso in a small, cosmetic plastic spray bottle to use with grapefruit seed extract for nail fungus, he looked concerned and suggested that I only store dmso in glass.

Ah, good thing I had that discussion. When I got home from the trip, I smelled the little plastic spray bottle that I had been using the previous 2 weeks. It reaked of chemicals! Yikes!! I compared the smell to the dmso in the thick white plastic bottle that I bought from an online vet supply store, which looks just like the one in Ted's photo. Thankfully the big bottle had a typical dmso odor - a faint scent of garlic. Needless to say, I immediately threw out my spray bottle. Until I find a glass beaker or bottle from a science supply store, I am using a glass dropper for the dmso.

Be warned, be warned!

Basically Aja made one major error here when he writes, "DMSO should be stored in glass containers (not plastic)...."

DMSO is sold by chemical suppliers generally in plastic containers (mine is from Fisher Scientific -picture of my DMSO is shown here) and it doesn't dissolve anything. Alcohol and acetone can dissolve certain things, namely plastic. But nothing dissolves organic compounds, such as skin, tissue, except through the process of digestion. And that is the job of Ebola, MRSA, your stomach acid to name a few.? So it is technically doubtful that a REAL CHEMIST would say that DMSO should be stored in a glass container. DMSO doesn't go through the plastic containers sold by chemical suppliers.

DMSO is actually a byproduct of paper manufacturing processes, and the paper mill tried to get rid of it by pouring on to the coal tar roads. It was a disaster, as all the animals, such as deer, squirrels started licking up this miraculous substance. And it was later that a chemist name Dr. Stanley Jacobs was looking for a suitable compound to preserve heart from damage during transportation to protect them and found DMSO by chance. It's antioxidant ability had that capability from preventing damage, but it had wide uses in a chemical fields since it offers cells to receive oxygen where blood vessels can't reach. The woman who posted the cat was right on.

The DMSO can go through the cells receiving oxygen to cells that are dying helping it revived and this is why DMSO is ideal in emergency situations such as a stroke, or brain damage situation.

To make a long story short, I used DMSO mixed with water to reduce irritation, but MSM can do it too, although it won't have that recognition in emergency situation mentioned, since MSM doesn't go through the cells as easily as a DMSO.

Sore Body After Flu

Caught a bad stomach bug (or food poisoning) while in Mexico. The locals said a flu bug was going around. I always carry ACV, Lugol's iodine, charcoal, oil of oregano, probiotics, and a host of other goodies just in case. Regurgitation (8 times was so violent), I thought I'd be carted off to the ER. The next day my entire body was terribly sore, even my eyes, teeth and fingernails hurt. I rubbed DMSO cream everywhere that hurt (no - didn't put in eyes! ) and it took away the soreness. Eyes still tender. Just remember to take OofO in the AM, and at night repopulate the good gut flora with probiotics.

DMSO Application Tips
Posted by BevilNC (NC) on 05/08/2022

My practice has always been to wash as normal/shower or clean the area to be applied with soap and water and rinse it well. Let it dry then apply the DMSO with an organic cotton ball. Then I made sure to let it dry before putting any clothing over the area. Betadine would simply be carried into your skin by the DMSO and betadine is not pure iodine, it has other ingredients you don't really want absorbed into your blood stream. You need to be careful with DMSO but not to the point of being fearful. If it eases your mind you could clean the area with food grade hydrogen peroxide since that would be fine getting carried in. No gloves as the heating action of DMSO is not kind to plastics and it would possibly dissolve them and carry those chemicals in.

If you thoroughly clean the area, where you want to apply DMSO, with witch hazel, it will alleviate any itch or burn. The itch and/ or burn you are experiencing is caused by the DMSO reacting with something that is on your skin.

I found my 99.9% pure DMSO in the animal treatment area of the local farm supply store. Ignore the part on the label that says that it is not for human consumption. That is to keep you-know-who happy. It is very reasonable in price there, also.

Re: Soft tissue problems on my feet that I've had for 20 years:

Thanks all, I did manage to find some DMSO to buy and used it today for the 1st time I also made a cream or gel from using powdered magnesium from caplets some distilled water a few drops of h2o2 and some colloidal silver with a bit of coconut oil and gently heated in a stainless steel pot until I was able to blend them then put it into a glass.

This I used a few minutes after applying the DMSO I applied both with organic cotton balls washed off after 20 min and applied pure aloe gel.

Within 10-20 min I was able to jog on the spot for close to 10 min!! Something I have not been able to do in years!! Big thanks to earthclinic and all who post and share :D

Sunburn

This is a remedy I found worked for sunburn:

After working up on our roof one day, my boyfriend and I got a bit sunburnt. Naughty, I know.

I keep DMSO in the cupboard for other uses -- boyfriend's inflammatory back pain, my foot pain (plantar fasciitis) as well as other general inflammatory ailments. I had read it was useful for healing heat burns, so I thought I'd try it for sunburn. Everything I've read about DMSO warns to make sure the skin is completely clean of chemical residues. I guess the only way to be sure is to very thoroughly exfoliate the area, so I did this in the shower with a "skin-peel" cloth (no soaps or other chemicals, it's purely mechanical exfoliation). After I'd towelled off I dabbed on some DMSO with a cotton swab. For anyone who's not familiar with the effects of DMSO -- it provides almost instant relief for pain when applied topically. So the burning stopped as soon as I put this on. I let it soak into my skin for about 5 mins, then with another cotton swab rubbed extra-virgin coconut oil into the skin. Well, what a relief! It took the stinging and heat out of my skin straight away. I repeated this several times that night, wearing a clean cotton t-shirt (with no fabric softener in it, just to be sure). It healed really quickly, didn't peel like my boyfriend's sunburn did, and kept my skin looking really good.

It seems like DMSO helps your skin absorb more of what you put on it, so it stands to reason that the EVCO was more able to penetrate my skin and help it "heal". I'm sure the antioxidant properties of the oil were a help to my sun-damaged skin -- as we all know, sun exposure stimulates production of free-radicals, which can cause cancer. I'm not saying this will stop you getting skin-cancer from sunburn, but it did help heal the damage or prevent it from being as bad as it should have. There are also some studies which have suggested a certain level of protection offered by extra virgin coconut oil, that it helps the skin's natural defences where UV light is concerned. Perhaps this is because EVCO is one of the closest substances to human sebum.

I get my DMSO at Tractor Supply. You should be able to get it at any large Feed and Seed or maybe pet supply. Its about 8.00 bucks for 16 oz bottle. If you got a besty who works for a veterinarian or who is a vet, get them to order it for you through their business.

Can we use apple juice instead or any other type of juice with it instead of monster C. Also do we have to use peroxide with it? I'm looking for an oral solution for 1 tsp dmso to go into. Thank you for any help. I read the book however I only see orange juice (I can not have)used and now your cocktail. Thank you.

DMSO Side Effects

WARNING!

Be very careful with DMSO (Dimenthyl Sulfoxide). As a chemist, I've used DMSO and it is a great compound because it is an EXTREMELY effective solvent.

The reason that the FDA is against DMSO for home use is because it basically dissolves almost anything and takes it along for the ride. Since it is readily absorbed into the skin, anything dissolved in it is also absorbed. This can be dangerous if you inadvertantly come in contact with a hazardous chemical while using DMSO. Many things that are safe when placed on the skin aren't necessarily so when they are absorbed into the body.

DMSO should be stored in glass containers (not plastic) and whatever area on the body it touches should be extremely clean. Be very conscious of not contaminating your bottle by dipping anything into it and make sure any container you use is also clean. As long as you're careful, you shouldn't have any problems.

I had a cold sore yesterday with a blister. It had started in the morning but I didn't notice it till I got to work. I decided to try dmso on it since I had some on my desk. (I ordered it a few weeks ago since I had read that you could use internally which I have yet to figure out what the protocal of that might be) I dabbed it on about 5 times throughout the day. I definetely felt that something was happening but the blister itself remained. About 7pm last night I accidently brushed the blister and it popped, without any pain. The blister was "dead". It is healing today. I HAVE NEVER EVER had a blister that was fully blistered heal so quickly. Once a blister has formed it usually means that you are in for the full program. ten days of a big patch of red gue by your lip and then scabbing and healing finally at the end.

I have been using DMSO for about 5 years. I buy it from a feed store or Tractor Supply. It is a lot cheaper and perfectly fine. I had bought both the pharmaceutical grade and that from the feed store. I could taste or tell no difference in the results.

I put 2 ounces of the DMSO and a 16 ounce glass and fill it up with water. I drink it slowly over about 20 minutes. It taste absolutely horrible. My friend drinks it with juice instead of water. Personally, I don't see how that would make it taste any better.

it's like an industrial strength Roto router to clean the plaque from the valves in my heart. I repeat this about every five or six months.

I have to drink a lot of water because my body gives off a garlicky smell for a couple of days.

You're really not an old fart, I am at 80, you're a young fart at 75. I thought hydrogen peroxide is dangerous to drink?

you use DMSO 1 Tsp dmso (99.9%) with Is it ACV apple cider vinegar or regular vinegar? You drink it on an empty stomach?

I drink 2Tbsp of ACV in a glass of water with 1/2 lemon juice and 1/2 Tsp of organic, raw honey every morning on an Empty stomach, I can eat 2-3 minutes later and lost 55 lbs. I will add DMSO 1tsp to fight my severe arthritis in back and neck. You also used DMSO gel that has Aloe Vera? I never heard of that, do you use it for neuropathy pain? I also have that in my feet and enlarged prostate and UTI urinary tract infection, maybe someone has a new recipe I can try. Thank you all. Germany 1961-1964 Army

A great book full of uses, reported cases & explanations: The DMSO Handbook For Doctors - Archie H Scott; easy to understand for non-doctors. I bought from "Book Depository" - free shipping to New Zealand. Example: 'Alzheimer's & Other Dementia'.

This writer had a friend who died at the age of 101. She showed no signs of mental decline. She used it (DMSO) regularly for over 30 years." We have been using DMSO for several years. In particular, we take 1 teaspoon of 40% every day, first thing in the morning.

As another precaution, we also put VCO (coconut oil) in our cereal. Buy this book -you will be so glad that you did. I am 81.

I put my 50/50 DMSO & distilled water into a 2 oz. glass bottle with sprayer and spray the areas I want to use it on. I then rub it in. I have been using it for 3 days this way with no irritation anywhere, including my hands that I don't wash after. I haven't noticed a ton of results yet but I think some minor benefits so far. I am also adding a pinch of Borax in my coffee in the morning. I had to take ibuprofen today because I couldn't walk on my swollen, inflamed feet. How long before I see more results? What is the average time for these protocols to work.

DMSO Used Internally

HI U D, ORH here, and your post on DMSO resonated with me as I have used it topically for most of my adult life. Today, I started taking it internally to augment my CDS program. Got this from the German Dr's website. It is supposed to be a catalyst to increase the effectiveness of the Chlorine Dioxide I take 30 minutes following the DMSO. No test, so I assume your state of health will indicate if this protocol is working or not.

I bought a box of cheap lab glassware to get back into the chemistry life of my past. The DMSO solution is made with 30 drops of 100% DMSO into a liter of distilled water. The drops depend on the size of your dropper so next time I will measure with a small graduated cylinder. One ml = 20 drops so I will measure out 1 1/2 ml instead of drops. DMSO is not dangerous, but it can easily pick up garbage from dirty glassware. Finally got my molasses from North Louisiana that I was reared on in the swamps of South Arkansas. So tonight my Tractor Driver is fixing pancakes topped by this molasses for supper. Been a long time.

Regarding diluting dmso for topical application, usually 50% dilution is good but everyone is different so just experiment.

To take dmso by mouth you can either put it in large cellulose capsules 1mL at a time and swallow them before they melt (in a minute), or you can just dilute it in enough water. 1mL in a liter of water is hard to taste. But you might want to use more, so in that case capsules and topical.

To avoid smelling bad, take extra magnesium and drink ( raw goat preferably) milk. Lots more info from the yummy.doctor website or in the book DMSO:Nature's Healer.

Sore Throat
Posted by Cindy (Illinois, Usa) on 07/06/2016 433 posts

I just read that in a DMSO book. It's 1 teaspoon in a couple ounces of water or juice. Once or twice per day - once per day for regular use and twice for problems and then after it's done its thing you cut back to once again.

I just made a tiny batch of DMSO lotion (50% DMSO and 50% aloe) and put it on one side of my neck to see what a topical application would do to a sore throat.

I definitely taste it AND my ear popped open - which is where my sore throat originated. I can feel it in my throat too - like it's sort of "diffusing" the soreness. Still hurts when I swallow but it's only been about 10 minutes.

I was actually looking for info on using it topically, for my daughter's boyfriend who has shoulder stuff from old sports injuries. Apparently you can use it topically even for internal issues, which makes sense but surprised me.

I'm getting ready to make some ear drops (50% DMSO and 50% distilled water). I didn't even know my ear was plugged up until it popped open! COOL!

Alicia, I am on thyroid scripts also. I felt anxious first taking the DMSO but at the tine I had a dose of CBD oil in my system also. DMSO of what I have read states that you must be careful because the DMSO will increase the efficacy of the other meds that you are on. I cut my thryoid meds down to half the dose and so far everything is fine, in that respect. Think about that with your BP meds, if that may be better for you while on DMSO. Otherwise, it is like you are increasing your BP meds which may be harmful. Chest tightening is a concern that should not be taken lightly. I had that happen once when taking Imitrex a few years back and the dr took me off that med. I was not on DMSO back then so it had nothing to do with that. Good health to you!

Hi Robert Henry, I read the same book as well. The one book that led me to this one mentioned on your post was titled The Heritic. I believe that is the title, by Mendelsohn(?). He mentioned DMSO aside from many interesting facts that involved the medical field during the fiasco with DMSO and the FDA. I had forgotten about DMSO until I read the first Trudeau book about a year ago and noticed that he mentioned The Heritic book in his. I have been slowly purchasing the books that Trudeau has mentioned in his book to help me along in understanding DMSO. Very fascinating. I still want to find out how I can orally take it if what I have is the 99.9% gel with 10% distilled water. I am psyched out with this stuff as well!

How to Store DMSO
Posted by Fred (Malton, Ontario) on 04/15/2013

All manufacturers use PP, Poly-propylene, #2 in recycling triangle, or HDPE, high-density polyethylene, #1 in recycling triangle, to ship DMSO.

I tried to measure off a little DMSO using kitchen type measuring spoon, and in a few seconds it took the shine off of the spoon. It also melts rubber, esp. Nitrile, which is popularly called "synthetic". Glass is probably best, but hard to find DMSO in glass, and it's expensive. People have used industrial grade DMSO, which is not clean at all, and they live. Except one ingredient which may be in it, which is deadly in larger amounts, or if used for a long time - acetone. I don't know if it can be smelled (smells like nail polish) in small percentege, but I wouldn't risk it. But I am not half-worried about plastic, if it's the right kind. I have a large syringe to measure bigger quantity, I put DMSO on it, and it rooled right off, as if the plastic is greasy, so it's unlikely to do anything.

Now I am drinking it, 2 teaspoons a day, you need grapefruit juice or tomato juice, it tastes awful, but it's harmless. I recommend a book "DMSO: Nature's healer" by Dr. Morton Walker, it explains everything about it. Clinics use it IV - Intra Veinus, orally, injections etc. , in combination, it's completely safe. But he warns to get familiar with possible side effects, they are not harmful but may be scary (for nothing, they go away)

Dear Stephen,

I have some DMSO gel. I mixed it with colloidal silver and put it into a glass bottle that had a glass eyedropper to it. This made it easy to get it out by the drop as needed. It helps to avoid the plastic issue. (Though my DMSO did come in a plastic container! )

I could have mixed it with distilled water, but was wanting to use it to deliver colloidal silver deeper into the body. The gel would have to be mixed with something I think, to be able to get it thin enough to come out of the eye dropper.

This is in response to Ted from Bangkok:

Please take into consideration that *most* chemical companies are not in business to provide ingestables, but rather chemical compounds for commercial use. Aja's comment about keeping DMSO in glass is quite appropriate, as many chemical compounds will leach chemicals out of plastic, although not necessarily dissolve it. I would hesitate to use a chemical bought such as you show in your picture for internal use, including something to be absorbed into the skin. Pharmaceutical grade is preferred.
