Stayed at a cheap hostel in Thailand when I ran out of money temporarily. Started getting big welts, "bites" that were incredbly itchy, on my legs. Became extremely depressed for months because I thought I had bed bugs. Finally realized that I had never seen a bed bug, even when I'd scoured the apartment looking for them. Became sure that I must have bird mites, remained depressed while trying to figure out resolution to the problem. Eventually I realized that bird mites are also visible, and I saw nothing. What I'd had the whole time was dust mites. You may not have bed bugs or bird mites or whatever kind of mite you think you have. Controlling humidity, cleaning, etc., is necessary to control dust mites if you're allergic. You will read that dust mites don't bite. They don't, but if you are allergic, you will get big itchy welts that look exactly like a bug bite. You have to treat for the problem that you have, and extermination is not required to get rid of dust mites. Anyway I'm free from these welts that made me feel like a leper and ruined a year and a half of my life; I hope if you have dust mites you figure it out sooner rather than later and can move on from it. :)
Also, I think it would be helpful to have different categories on here for different mites. I also suffer from demodex and the cure for demodex is going to be something totally different than the cure for dust mites. These are different mites.
Good pest control companies can put your car into a container to heat treat. It does not damage the car and is not off the planet in cost. I had mine done it was great.it cost something like $280.00 NZ (I can't remember exactly, sorry) at Rentokil NZ pest control company, they were very helpful.
Getting me clear has been another matter. I have tried everything natural chemical and mixes. The things I've used that consistently help are:
diatomaceous earth: on everything including myself.
Equal amounts (20ml of each)of plain, cheap hair conditioner mixed with methylated spirits, there is always a little left over, Rub this all over including hair, use a nit comb through your hair. Wait 15 to 20 mins then shower. Or, if I'm tired (not hard with this journey) go to bed after rubbing it all over have a good nights sleep (keep some beside the bed and if you awaken being nipped put you finger in and rub where nipped, it stops. Repeat in the morning then shower. I have success leaving it on (repeating after a shower)then rub DE on your skin.
Mattress is encased in plastic. I use a plastic camping pillow; this has saved a lot of trouble. Have had a journey with changing the sheets and bedding every day. However sometimes am so tired I have had success in spraying each layer with fly spray.
i don't personally like chemicals but one can get so desperate for some peace that you just use what will work when you are exhausted. I work in a very busy hospital at the front line and have to be well rested.
To protect my car I spray with a good fly spray.
I do the same with my shoes; take them off, spray and bag them. I flea powder them prior to wearing and I've had success in stopping the tiny creatures from breeding in my shoes.
vacuming, washing clothes in hot water, drying then 1/2 an hour in a drier. Bras need to be put in boiling water; I boil the jug poor it over my bra and underpants as soon as I've removed them....the tiny black insects were breeding in the bras! I learned this very quickly.
I've used flannels to dry myself after showering and then into boiling water. I miss towels but this has been cost effective.
All of this stated with a camping trip at the end of Febrary this year (2016 at the warm end of our New Zealand summer).
i wish anyone having this problem all the best in beating it (including me) Good Luck!
Multiple Remedies
I saw a post from someone who said that they sprayed themselves with kerosene (paraffin) from head to toe every 4 days (slept in it) and this got rid of them.
I have had very good results with drinking neem powder dissolved in water (3 teaspoons a day dissolved in 750 ml water which I sip throughout the day). This has kept them to a minimum however the neem is dehydrating and you need to drink a lot of water to compensate.
Cut out potatoes, any refined sugar and flour from your diet. I have also started taking Juice Plus supplements, chlorella and spirulina. For me the problem is on my person rather than my environment (I brought these bastards back with me from a trip to India) so my strategy is to make my blood / scent disgusting to them.
I also add a cup of cheap table salt to my laundry.
I only feel occasional crawling now however it is largely under control. I am going to try the paraffin (with much hesitation) as I need them gone for good.
Lime Sulphur Dip
How long did it take you to get rid of the mites using this method every 4 days?

I've also had Permenthrim, Ivermectin at same time, then used Perm a week later, helps to get rid of the worst but I think if I had used borax straight after & ACV washes & drinks may have completely killed off. I use a Uvb lamp to kill off any mites in my bedroom & bedding 3x aweek. Hope this helps
Below is a blog response to an Inquiry by John F who sent me an e-mail asking for mite remedies.
Many of my responses are repeated information and can be found in previous posts above.
--Hello John- I am well into my third year of mite infestation of my home. I consider myself a veteran at this point. I have posted in a previous blog that I was mite free. My assessment was premature.
I am however in control and living with the reality that although the situation continues to improve this is an old house and I continue to battle with this issue and I am relentless and my skin continues to be completely clear of any infestation. some minor bites from time to time.
John asked about white vinegar as a solution.
I have had some success cleaning floors with white vinegar and water. However, Apple cider vinegar (with the mother) is more effective. I've used it Also to gargle with and direct use drinking it. I have found though for cleaning Floors borax with a small amount of concentrated bleach mixed with hot water is Far superior than white vinegar.
John also asked in his email to elaborate on the statement. "Salt, Borax, Peroxide, Heat these are your weapons"
June 30/2017 I would continue to stand by that statement from 2015 with the following Clarifications:
In that context I was speaking specific to bird mites.
The reality is: it Pertains to all mites though more effective on some than others. For example Rodent mites respond to these same tools but may require several treatments. I now group and consider all mites as nano-insects and I don't worry about Identifying specific types of mites as there are hundreds of known varieties and On a molecular level hundreds more yet to be discovered. So don't waste time, money and rattling your brain on what type mite am I Dealing with, when we need to concentrate our effort on killing them.
Lets examine the toolbox 1 item at a time: Heat Heat in the form of steam can open the pores of the skin allowing us to Penetrate into boreholes where mites have taken up residence. The application of 99% DMSO directly onto infected areas can also be helpful in penetrating layers Of skin. You must assume they (mites) have left eggs behind so whatever Treatment you use must be repeated. Skin must be re-treated several times in Order to defeat the life-cycle. I have found that bathing in hot water with a Mixture of 2 cups borax and 2 cups epson salts (a notable increase double in the amount of borax and epson salt from my previous blog) in a full tub of hot water is Very effective for full body cleansing treatment.
I recommend lying on your side Submersing as much of your body and head as you can. I cover one nostril with a Finger and allow one nostril to breath through. I stay in this position for a Minimum of 5 minutes. I then roll to do the same lying on my other side. When I get out of the tub I dry my body with a hair dryer on high heat knowing that At this point whatever mites remain are weakened and cannot withstand heat Above 160 degrees.
Note: It is important to dry your skin thoroughly to avoid Secondary infections by fungus and molds trying to take up residence in Boreholes left behind by mites. Areas such as crotch and under breasts are Especially vulnerable areas for this problem of secondary infection.
Don't be afraid to blast affected ares with the hairdryer for several minutes on high heat. Apply a salt rub to the affected area if needed to kill stubborn mites.
SALT and BORAX: On a molecular level tiny critters such as bacteria, viruses, fungi, molds And nano-insects can't live in the presence of salt. Borax is a mineral and a Concentrated cleanser. Borax will instantly transform any environment to Alkaline which is a toxic environment for nano-insects. Borax can be used in Conjunction with dandruff shampoo to cleanse the scalp. Be sure to rub it into The scalp or any other affected area to penetrate layers of skin. Although I've Found mites are not fond of taking up residence on the scalp itself. they prefer To be just below the hairline. or in areas where they can find moisture in the form of sweat.
Under arm pit, under breasts, crotch ext. For spot cleaning the skin I make a salt rub in a small mason jar. I use a Combination of fine sea salt, Himalayan sea salt, coconut oil and tea tree oil.
If available wash the area with hot water first then rub the salt mixture and work
it deeply into the skin. Environmental re infestation: I get them off my skin but my home or apartment and vehicle is infected what Can be done? Nano-insects breath oxygen just like we do so they can be suffocated. With the Use of Ozone generators most environments can be cleaned. ozone generators Convert oxygen from 2 molecule to three molecules which turns oxygen into ozone. A 3.5 MG Ozone generator can be purchased on Amazon or Ebay for under 100.00 Dollars. This size generator is suitable for cleaning a small car. I use 2 this Size and place one in the trunk. I hate to use or recommend that you use Insecticides. I have found that by spraying the rubber seal around the door frames of The car with Permethrin concentrate I can block this escape route. They will run for the doors trying to find breathable air and run staight into the pesticide. They will also try to hide in the air conditioning vents and seat-belt holders and so these Areas must be sprayed as well. CAUTION: do not use foggers as they will cause Damage to plastic surfaces such as gauge lens and radio lens cover and are Mostly in-effective on mites. For larger areas such as a large room in a home Or apartment. You'll need a larger Ozone generator or run even several at the Same time depending on the square footage. They make commercial grade Ozone Generators of 7000mg and 10,000mg. never leave pets or humans in an area being Treated with ozone. Small animals can be killed by exposure to ozone and can Cause lung damage or even death in human exposure. Never run your Ozone Generator more than MAX. 4 hours as transformers can overheat and you will face A costly replacement which requires a soldering job. I hope you find this information useful and I hope you resolve your problem Quickly, If you have any further questions please don't hesitate to ask. Regards Ralph

Sea Salt Bath
★★★★☆
First of all thank you so much to everyone on this site and others like it. I've only started dealing with this for about a month but I'm finally starting to get a grip on it and myself.
I don't have a cure yet but for anyone starting to deal with it sea salt baths will help you keep your sanity. But after the first bath all the critters that fell off my body ended up on my face and scalp, which increased my misery 10 fold. Wait at least an hour to get your head near the water till they all die off. I've noticed the water temp doesn't have to be all that hot. For my critters sea salt water is enough that they let go and start swimming till they die.
My guys are translucent in color so I never saw them until my second bath when I would gaze at the surface of the water from the side just where the light from the light bulb is reflected. I could see what looked like a sliver of thread or lint swimming like mad with all eight legs. The bigger ones look like a tiny wet dandruff flake with legs all around while the smallest ones look like the tiniest of dots, but looking even closer I realized they were treading water too! This truly freaked me out because there were tons of them in the dime sized spot I was observing. Well maybe 30 or so but that means there was a constellation of mites that just fell off my body in the tub with me! And that was just up to my waist!
I just wanted to give up and I dunno start sleeping on benches at this point. At least my lower half didn't itch that much. While I would soak and ponder getting my upper half in the water again I sprayed my torso and arms with Listerine to keep them from docking on me again. I chickened out a few times and just got out of water spraying my legs with Listerine and washed up, but eventually got a bucket with clean pre-soaked tub water and would step into that from the tub to ensure I didn't take with me the last of the stragglers, which I always found a lot of even after draining the tub and washing feet.
I even tried to dunk my head in a bucket but was afraid they would all crawl to my face then before I was done. Big dilemma. Until today I read about someone snorkeling in their tub, but not owning a mega tub I drove out to the beach and did some real snorkeling. Besides them crawling back on my legs on my drive back 30 min in the ocean got rid of them from me, most importantly my head! I just scratched my head as I wrote that but this is a turning point for me.
So find a big tub or the beach if your near it and dunk yourselves. If a tub hose yourself off while coming out or wait till they all die before getting out. I dream of the Dead Sea or Dr. Fish in Turkey that eats anything and everything off your body.
Now I gotta figure out how to get them off my 3 year old son, which is breaking my heart, and out of our lives.
Good luck to you all! God bless you.
Just answered a question our new boy, Van, put to me about mites. I then went on to read what was in the archives. Most folks have Demodex mites their entire lives to one degree or another. I have had them and they are kind of a pain, but all live with them their entire lives. Yep, your nose can be red along with your eye lids. Not a crisis. These are microscopic. You are just not pretty.
On the other hand the one's my new friend, Van has, will put you in the top of a tall, tall pine tree. There is no way you can live with these dang buggers.
Here's my point. Mites are not mites, and this site needs to figure out how they can be categorized. Ain't no way drinking ACV gonna cure the mites that are under your skin and you can see. We are talking apples and oranges and misleading lots of folks.
I know I stirred the pot, but it needed stirring.

Choriopete Mite
I need some consultation. I just got my DNA test back from my MD turned Homeopathic doctor and my problems are too long to list, so I just want to address one. That is the Choriopete Mite. They are microscopic and feed on the skin of animals like horses, sheep, etc. They are supposed to itch. I read all I can on the internet and pulled out my Hulda Clark book. This is my second test for this critter to appear. The only place on my body that shows a rash is my ankles and this showed up when I crushed my t 12 vertrabre. My ankles swoll and I assumed that they were all related. Now I'm not so sure.
I'd especially like Bill and Timh to review what treatment I'm about to do. I can get 10 % Premetrin at the Farmer's Co-op , spread that on my ankles and cover that with 50% DMSO. That should kill the buggers and I will detox the insecticide later. As a Ch. E. I need the advice of folks smarter me.
When I really get a good case of the ass it is usually at my self. It has taken me 6 months to get to this spot. I should have seen this earlier.
On a lighter note, me and Ms Conn and daughter are headed to St George's Isl. for a week. They will sunbath and I'll study how to get my gimlet ass to age 92. That will take the help of my Earth Clinic friends.
One last comment, If you have cancer, get in touch with THE INDEPENDENT CANCER RESEARCH FOUNDATION. They will give you low cost natural treatment alternatives and all for free. What treatment is your decision.
Ya'll behave for a change. ==Ole RH==

For mites the best treatment is a mixture of essential oils in a nebulizer, and 3% hydrogen peroxide (H202) as spray after each shower plus improving the immune system.
I have done a lot of research and essential oils seem to work even though this has to be used for some time. It is advisable to obtain professional info. as health food stores do not seem to carry high percentage oils.
In addition, one liter of water daily with a pinch of salt and 1/8th teasp. of borax sipped throughout the day five days a week. This for about six months. For males, 1/4 teasp. of borax.

I agree - a bath tub full of a saturated borax solution is one spendy bath!
Old Robert Henry reported success by using extreme heat in a sauna- took about a week he said [scroll down and look for his posts, he talks all about it.]
So you could try very HOT soaks in the tub with a face towel saturated with borax/hydrogen peroxide or borax/vinegar.

We have had great success in reducing the numbers of mites & symptoms using MSM Sulfur, clove oil & eucalyptus oil in a lotion base after showering with sulfur soap but a few are still getting through & making a home under our skin.
We have a colloidal silver machine & make our own to take orally. I will make extra for this and purchase teh Coconut oil & W salve. We used to use the W salve back in the early 90's and it healed burns like nothing else. I hope these two extra items are the missing link we need to completely heal. Thank you so much for sharing with us.

About the borax- 1/4 tsp. It is simple. Just get some measuring spoons ( like the ones used for cooking ) And get the one that says 1/4 tsp, dip it in the borax and get a level scoop and add this to a liter of water and drink throughout the day. The spoons are called measuring spoons. ( availiable where you get kitchen supplies like cookware )
I would like to mention that I would do everything I could to get my ph alkiline. This can be accomplished with baking soda taken interally. Read this site for now on. I have been studing on Earthclinic.com now for several years and have barely scratched the surface of what all is availiable here. There is so much on here, I could not even begin to tell you.
The vaseline petroleum jelly would be worth a shot and I would most certainly use the scalp treatment on the infected spots. If you have black specks come out of your skin, then we are dealing with the same critters. The scalp treatment penetrates the hair follicles and gets deep into the pores. Rub it in the skin for several minutesand then let it sit on the skin for about five minutes and wash off with some lye soap and a wash cloth or something to wash away the dry skin.
On this site if you study, you will find that disease, parasites and sickness cannot live in an alkaline body. Tons of info here. Learn to navigate this website.
Best of luck! You can reply to me anytime, because I am a daily reader on here. And I always will be. So feel free to post questions or comments anytime with the reference to skin mites or something like that so that it will catch my attention. I don't read every post on here, but ones that catch my interest or that I have things in common with I do read.

1. Crush several cloves of garlic and let them steep in about 1/4 cup of mineral oil or bath oil for some hours (Baby oil is a mineral oil, Bath oil is a soluble mineral oil & worth the cost). Add some lemon juice to reduce the smell. Push the mix firmly through a fine strainer.
2. Add some liquid soap to mineral oil to emulsify then thin with a quantity of water suitable for rubbing on your skin.
It works really well. The recipe is based on a home insecticide recipe I found, modified for topical use. The only down side is the pervasive smell, but frankly I just really need the sleep. The quantities are rough: you are looking for a fairly pungent mix that does not irritate your skin.
My particular critters are only slightly deterred by tea tree oil, now they're running scared. I have tried permethrin based surface sprays & bombs which have had no effect whatever. Since permethrin is (supposedly) non/low toxic I even sprayed my hat to sleep in. The bugs just laughed.
Garlic & onions store their winter food just above the soil, where most of the bugs & bacteria live. So it's not surprising they have developed effective & general defenses against animals & bacteria.
The mite family has 50,000 species & of course they pre-date insects. They are top survivors. That species number also indicates they are masters of evolution & adaptation, quickly adapting to local food source & conditions.
Before I tried the garlic I thought I was screwed, completely. There are a number of other things to try: oregano oil is a top contender. I am also looking at rosemary oil & citronella oil. I intend to emulsify these for a surface spray. Steam cleaners are a known winner. Some people recommend Windex, which just sounds like a death wish.
Good luck, you can do it.

Borax
Borax can dry the skin out, that's part of what may kill the mites. Ted did also recommend this on the rosacea thread (which also deals with mites) that if the skin gets too dry, apply jojoba oil or aloe vera or lavender oil.
Source: https://www.earthclinic.com/cures/rosacea.html
Perhaps you need to lessen the borax to 1/16 a teaspoon or less and take it less frequently as well. Some people are more sensitive than others. If it is still too much, stop. This website will tell of some of borax side effects. Most people who take the borax in the small doses listed in E.C. Seem to tolerate them well. But some sensitive people may experience the side effects listed here. Sometimes doses on E.C. have to be tinkered with as we all react differently to different things.

I learned so much from a book called
THE YEAR OF THE MITE. I found it on kindle when I was researching one day.
About a small family that got infested with bird mites.
The author was "lucky". In that she worked for a university as a cell biologist, so she had friends working there, that were willing to do test and try and identify what kind of BUG she actually had. Un like the doctors and all their lack of help this bug was identified as D Gallinae.
Most people don't get thaT kind of help.
Her daughter and friend got it also.
She doesn't have a miracle cure and it took her about a year or so to get rid of the buggers.
But there is so much good info and it is SO VALIDATING.
Also google this:
timeline of scientific understanding of the mite.
This actually shows a chart study and e, planTion of when bird mites were PROVEN to infest people, not just birds.
This is something you can show to your non believing family And doctors.
Before 1958 it was believed that bird mites did not bite humans and could not reproduce on human blood.
Also in 1958 human blood WS found In a bird mites gut. These mites were collected from an infested bedroom.
U til 2009 it was still believed they could not reproduce on human blood.
In 2009-2010 it was proven that bird mites DO CONSUME human blood, do reproduce consuming human blood and DO easily infest humans, if given the opputunity, like a bird nesting in eaves of your house or attic, or even from your cat bringing in a dead bird, OR your cat maybe infested too.
Dr Olivier Sparangano specializes in the study of bird mites. All of this info and more I found in the year of the mite book.
It was easy to read and relatable, and filled with facts, that could help you, get your doctor to
Finally realize you ARE NOT CRAZY.
THIS IS REAL. PEOPLE NEED HELP.
Dr sparangano has these facts in YEAR OF THE MITE
You can get the full study from the book.

1. Take a shower with tea tree soap (nightly)
2. Wash hair with tea tree shampoo/conditioner(nightly)
3. Dry body with paper towels (keeps washing minimal)
4. Mix borax/hydrogen peroxide/water. Make into a paste and apply to bites. After you apply the paste cover with a small piece of cotton ball and cover with a piece of surgical tape. This will keep you from scratching and will keep you from itching. Plus, I noticed that since I started doing this to some of the newest bites, the ones i covered did not scar nor left a dark spot. Do this every night till all itching goes away.
5. I also take neem and turmeric capsules(once a day) that you can purchase at your local vitamin shop.
6. Washed all washables in borax and boiling water put in dryer and run 2 times.
7. You can put some cloths in a paper sack and staple and put in your oven on 200 degrees for 20 minutes. This will kill them.
8. Sprayed windex window cleaner on carpets and cloth furniture every night before going to bed.
9. Spray disinfectant spray on sheets, pillows, and blanket before you go to bed. I usually do this right before I take my shower.
This is day 2 with no more bites. I am thrilled and I hope that they are gone and never come back. Keeping fingers crossed.
I just hope that this helps anyone out there. Please don't wait. As soon as you get bites and there are no mosquitos, no flies, no fleas than assume they are some kind of mite and fight them head on. Wait and see mentality will just give them time to get very strong. Good luck!
When I and my family figured out we had a demodex mite skin(and home infestation), we took 100% submersed baths using A SNORKEL. Yep, a diving snorkel we found at a national retail store for just a couple of dollars.

Alternative treatment: One thing that I found that made a huge difference with mites crawling on my scalp is Pine Tar hair conditioner. Oil your scalp with it and around your ears and eyebrows. (You can buy it at Sally's in the US or order it online from Amazon.) It smells like pine tar so you might just want to use it when you are at home and shampoo it out before you leave home to go to work. (I leave it on while I am shopping and it does not appear to offend people, but in close quarters, it will offend others.)
A better smelling alternative: Mix equal parts dry mustard with water and leave it for 10 minutes. Mix one part mustard mix with 1 1/2 parts oil or lotion. Apply on your scalp areas only, not your hair. Actually, this works all over your body.
Diagnosing Mites
This summer, in the evenings, we usually sit on the patio for a little happy hour after work. This is between 6-7 pm. Summers (well, ALL seasons, actually) are very HUMID.
I noticed on several evenings that my right occipital orbit bone would become quite itchy and irritated but there was no obvious bite. I thought it was some kind of tiny mosquito, biting gnat or something like that, but it made no sense that it would always be in the exact same place. Occasionally there is a similar itchy spot along my right temple at the hairline.
Tonight, it is too cold to be outdoors, but the itching started in the same old place. The orbit bone is quite puffy and red, my whole right cheek is flushed red (no alcohol tonight so that is not the reason!) and there are two little bloody spots like pin pricks.
The left cheek was a little flushed but not itchy and no obvious bites. I really don't want this thing to spread, it would be a nightmare.
Any thoughts?
Two other things--I have an inside dog but have had him for 11 years. He doesn't seem any itchier than normal...
Also, this year, we started using a clothesline to dry our clothes and towels, especially during the drought when it was pretty hot and sunny all day, really saved on our electric bill. The line runs from the house to a big pecan tree that is heavily inhabited by squirrels and we also have a lot of birds in our yard (all kinds from sparrows to cardinals to hummers to owls). On at least one occasion, I had to rewash towels that had been hanging on the line due to being soiled with some kind of animal droppings...
I just washed all my towels and pillow cases in super hot water and washed my face with ACV followed with a layer of coconut oil.
This is a long post but I would appreciate any input.
Thanks and thanks, Earth Clinic, for this amazing site!!
True that the Borax itself would not *dissolve* into the Castor Oil, but I was thinking more of using the Castor Oil as a simple "spreading tool" for the Borax, in addition to Castor Oil's own valuable insect-relieving properties.
Finally, I am thinking that Black Walnut Hull (tincture or a vodka (or ACV?) extract of it ) may be of some value to you also, Black Walnut gets rid of a lot of parasite/insect issues, Google it and lots of stuff should come up.
One more thing, have you tried soaking in a weak Borax solution, using it like a bath, without 'scrubbing' on your shower-sensitive skin? Might be another good thing to do, if you can do it.
My thoughts about the vaseline:
As a child I got chiggers from wading through high reeds at the local riverbank several times. I used to have to put nailpolish on the welts and lay on the roof of my Mother's house in the Sun to kill them off.
It only worked because the nail polish cut the chiggers off from their air supply and they smothered as a result. So I think the purpose of the vaseline is to keep the mites from breathing. And I think it would take a thick coat of vaseline to do that. IOW I think that *wiping off* the vaseline (effectively leaving only a thin coat behind) would actually prevent it from being successful, and just cause an inconvenient mess for you while a large percentage of the mites go happily on.
I hope some of these ideas are useful for you. Please respond with your results if you use them. Be careful with the clove, use less rather than more until you see how your skin responds to it.
Note about Mustard: It can burn you (I understand that desperation breeds a willingness to try anything. Therefore I am urging you to exercise caution). I would be *very* careful about using it. JMHO. Patch test on tiny area of skin, etc- A good rule of thumb for everything in this email, BTW.
