Apple Cider Vinegar, Cayenne
06/27/2011: Nettle from London, England: "Question for Ted: I think my sinuses are blocked. I still feel flu like symptoms (achy with slight temp, headache, dry cough especially when lying down to sleep, earache with weird numbness around left ear with echoing only in one ear now), exacerbated at night time in particular. I have reduced pnasal drip (green mucus) and sore throat since doing Apple Cider Vinegar drops in water and sinus rinsing, as well as cayenne mixture (1tsp) with honey (1tbs) and Apple Cider Vinegar (1tbs).
I dont know if I have strep infection? but no white patches anywhere in mouth. Done a few of your remedies and it has helped with some of the symptoms in particular no more nausea! Also, used Hydrogen peroxide drops in ear today and no effect at all.
Question: If sinuses are blocked, then pndrip will continue as not getting green discharge through nose - how do I introduce cayenne into nostrils? Can I add cayenne powder to sinus rinse Apple Cider Vinegar and water mixture or should I sniff cayenne powder straight into nostril and if so how much??
Do you think my thinking about blocked sinuses/psdrip etc makes sense? Thanks"Replies
06/28/2011: Nettle from London, England replies: "Ear pain (both ears) and sore throat gone this morning! However, both ears are now blocked, muffled hearing like I have just come off a long haul flight. I feel that I need to "pop" my ears -pinching nose and blowing thr nose has not worked. Any ideas then please respond. Still wondering whether to sniff cayenne powder into each nostril and if so how much - Has anyone tried this? Or should I now just be patient and give my sinuses time to decongest?
Still have a little post nasal drip (green discharge - yuk), so sinuses must still be congested with infection? Also, have developed a tickley cough - gonna try one of the garlic soup recipes from this website. Will continue with all of yesterdays remedies re:acv, cayenne and neti. This site is fabulous!"
[NAY] 04/14/2011: Randy from Mattoon, Il: "A friend told me about this site because I was suffering from a sinus infection (an annual spring issue for me). I tried apple cider vinegar and snorting cayenne pepper for a few days. Result: the sinus infection is no better, my nose burns and I have a bad taste in my mouth. Going to the doctor tomorrow to get some real medication."
[YEA] 12/27/2010: Asheley from Smyrna, Georgia: "Well, I was skeptical about this at first. I have used cayenne to gargle with for a sore throat and thought it would be hell to put up your nose, but that crap works wonders! I mixed a cup of filtered water, lukewarm, with a neti pot packet, 5 drops of ACV, and a tiny dash of cayenne (the tail end of the tip of a knife). It made me have to blow my nose for about 5 minutes straight, but an hr and a half later, I am clear as a bell. A sinus infection set in 2 days ago and yesterday I started oil of oregano pills and nasal spray with grapefruit seed extract. I felt better when I got up today, but the cayenne/ACV rinse has really done the trick. Thanks Earth Clinic."
Apple Cider Vinegar, Grapefruit Seed Extract
[YEA] 12/14/2010: Addie222 from Morgantown, Wv: "I love this site and have come here many times to naturally treat several ailments. After reading everything you had on Sinus treatments I made my own. My two children (at the time 2 and 5) had awful sinus stuff... On allergy medicines and nose sprays that made their noses bleed. They had inherited my bad sinuses and were never without a stuffed up nose or ear infection. I tried the ACV drink and it did help, but there was no way I was getting a 1 year old and a 4 year old to drink ACV!
I made my own solution and put it in an old nose spray bottle and I do two squirts per side on the oldest and myself and 1 squirt for the youngest. They do not like to leave it up there too long and prefer to blow it out. It still helps even though they blow it out. When I do it, I try to leave it up there as long as I can. It is good to blow after though, you get out a lot of gunk. I've reduced my sinus infection doctor visits from 1 per month to 1 per season and the boys have visited the doctor only for strep throat, not sinus or ear infections and they are now 4 and 7 years old! They re off all medicines (allergy and sprays). My doctor and my husband think I'm crazy and it's all in my head. But I know better and I think the pediatrician is starting to believe me!
Here's my recipe... (all measurements are approximate. I don't usually measure, just "eye-ball" it, but I tried to make it as close to what I do as possible. Also, I err on the side of more mild than strong as the boys don't like the "sting")
1/2 cup warm water
About a 1/4-1/2 teaspoon of salt
About 1 teaspoon of ACV (organic, with "the mother")
About 50-60 DROPS of GSE (Grapefruit Seed Extract)
I mix it up in a measuring cup and pour it into the mist-er nose spray bottle. If it's too strong, I add salt water. If it's not strong enough, I add a bit more ACV and GSE. When you spray it, look down at your feet. That way it won't drain down your throat. I keep the left over in a small bottle and refill the sprayer whenever I need it. I hope this helps someone. Especially those of you who don't think you could stomach the ACV drink!"
Apple Cider Vinegar, Neti Pot
[YEA] 07/01/2012: Bradshad from North Providence, Rhode Island: "Yes I have used Apple Cider Vinegar in the neti pot, and I got the suggestion off earth clinic. I used 1 teaspoon in luke warm water. You may want to use less the first few times because it does burn a little. I use it when I am really clogged or have a sinus infection. It draws quite well. Also if you looking to kill a sinus infection off try cutting up a little garlic in the neti pot and leave it for awhile or a small amount of cayenne powder. I have killed of sinus infections this way. I dont know the long term side effects so I only use these remedies occasionally. Good luck."Replies
11/12/2013: Sunny from Ca replies: "Can you explain the garlic part please? So you put chopped up garlic in your netipot with water and let it sit, then take out the garlic and use that water in the neti pot?
Thank you for your clarification."
06/30/2012: Anon from Shoreacres, Texas: "I was just diagnosed with sinus fungus and was wondering if you could use Apple Cider Vinegar in your neti pot? Has anyone tried that?"Replies
07/01/2012: Lisa from Thousand Oaks, Ca, Usa replies: "Hi, Regarding the neti pot and apple cider vinegar solution- it certainly can be used but personally I think it is much harsher than a saline solution. I remember my daughter trying the Apple Cider Vinegar and it really irritating her sinuses. I use a neti pot every morning and just use about a quarter tsp. Of sea salt in it. It works beautifully.
I would suggest that if you have a fungus in your sinuses you use the neti pot w/ salt water more often and also consider changing your diet such as eliminating dairy, eating more alkaline to support your whole body in this effort. My daughter was plagued with chronic sinus infections and nothing helped until she finally changed her diet. It's been about 4 years now and she is committed to eating right since it was the only real difference that changed that for her. Hope this information helps. Best to you, Lisa"
07/02/2012: Diane from Los Angeles, Ca. United States replies: "Regarding Apple cider vinegar in a neti pot.
My sinusitis became so bad that I could barely live with it. I was so desperate that I resorted to using a couple drops of apple cider vinegar in the neti pot up my nose and into my sinus cavity. I don't know how I would have survived my sinuisitis nightmare without this treatment at the time. After using this treatment for about 4 months I never had any problems in my sinuses due to using it! Sinusitis attacks are similar to hot chili sauce pouring down the sinuses and into the nose and ears, down the throat and into the chest! Pure hell on earth!
My sinuses were completely normal after I found the true cause of the problem!
What totally cured me of sinusitis was discovering that I had a cold spot at the top back of my head that may have been an infection of some type.
I could not confide in a professional because not one doctor knew how to help me in 11 years!
What I did was notice that heat or warmth (even a blow dryer) stopped my sinus attacks. So I wore a warm hat or cap day and night for about 3 to 4 months and my horrible sinuisitis nightmare ended.
Whatever the problem in my head stopped with the heat.
In other words there was nothing wrong with my sinuses---my problem was a cold head infection!
At least this worked for me."
[YEA] 06/06/2011: Angela from Ny, Ny: "Good Day!! I want to thank everyone on this site... I had a sinus infection... Or what I believed was a sinus infection cause I did not go to a doctor.... I had a lump that I first felt inside of my nose about a week ago... Then I was able to feel the lump on the outside of my nose and I got worried. I was told by a friend it could be a sinus infection. So I looked for a natural cure and came across this website... I did the ACV.... Wonderful!!! With the honey added for 3 days.... Also got the neti pot!!! I will tell you after the first use the lump inside my nose was gone!! After two uses I was lump free!! I do no that it has something to do with pollen, dust, pets, and other things... All which are in my life... My job is so dusty its crazy... I have made the neti pot a part of my life now!! Thank you to all of you!!"
[YEA] 01/10/2010: Bruce from Huntington Beach, Ca, Usa: "I have gotten a lot of great information from Earthclinic, so now it's time for me to share my experiences: I had a sinus infection that began zfter a cold, that lasted for a full year. I decided to put apple cider vinegar into my sinus rinse "pot", along with 1/2 cup spring water, 1/2 tsp sea salt and 1/2 tsp baking soda. The first time I tried this, I used way too much acv (est 1-1/2 tbl). I bravely pored the mixture in both nostrils - hurt a LOT and the mucus began to flow freely. I was up and down all night, carefully blowing my nose, but the next day ohhh what uncongested nasal passages! Susequent irrigations weren't as painful, now that the infection has cleared up, but I rinse once daily anyway to clear out the remains of the infection. See in another post my experiences with cinnamon/clove/thyme oils."
Apple Cider Vinegar, Oregano Oil
[YEA] 02/15/2009: Isa from Guatemala: "hi, thanks for all of your comments. my son had a chronic sinus infection and after many antibiotics we decided to give it a try. he drank the acv three times a day, with 4 drops of oil of oregano. also he took propoleum for two week, in addition to his nasal flushes. it worked wonders and has been feeling well since. (4 months)"
Apple Cider Vinegar, Sinus Rinse
[YEA] 02/05/2010: Daniel from Berlin, Germany: "Hi! Its only 5 days ago i found your site. Want to give you great credits for all the good information i found here...thanks to all !!
I found it cause i got back my painfull and disturbing sinus infection again (wich happens with me always 2 ,3 times a year, with headaches, totally ,,blocked,, nose and forhead, swollen eyes,no energy etc.) I even believe that this chronic sinus problem is due to some sort of unknown deficiency in my body that also makes me more ,,down,, then many others throughout the year..but this is a guess.
anyway: This time i brewed my own mucus ,,releaser,, Since i discovered the kosher salt and the himalaya salt which is the main worker in this liquid, iam so happy to be able to quickly loosen up all the mucus up there so that it is not ,,exploding,, my head anymore.
my recipe is (mix acording to feeling and strength and amount of solution needed):
-nice Kosher salt or himalaya salt.
-some healthy green tea
-bit of lime
-5 drops of good bee propolis (solution in alcohol)
-bit of (good!) olive oil, or take self made oregano oil.
(of course carefull with this strong recipe on kids please)
mix until dissolved in a bowl that,s not your newly bought porcelin wedgewood bowl .the oils and the propolis will not dissolve of course and float around a bit on the liquid,no problem. Also the propolis is brownish and looks a bit strange...but in fact it,s very good stuff (bees use it in their nests as an anti virus) ...bring in the nose and let run. It can sting a bit for a few secs and is a sort of horsemethod i think
If you bring it in in bed (laying with head backwards) then have loads of toiletpaper ready!
This rinse does al lot in preventing the alongcoming head aches, further illness and weakening in sinus infections and the first steps of curing faster, but it is NOT completely taking away the total cause of the infection. Since i live in the countryside close to Berlin i get hold here of an excellent mild tasting, raw Apple Cider Vinegar quality which i took 3 times daily in my applejuice (2,5 tablespoons in a glass and a pinch of natrium hydrogen carbonate( baking soda) but note :only since 4 days!!!
I must say reading all the reactions about ACV i was a bit reserved...but i took it and it almost immediately stopped further closening of the sinus,it stopped the depressive feeling coming with it and although i somehow still feel the infection is still there...it,s being noticebly surpressed by the ACV. I was working again almost immediately and i feel marvelous !
Normally this sort of illness knocks me out 2 weeks minimal. Wow, this is amazing stuff. I try some other qualities of biological ACV now but i find them much sharper in taste..the one from the region here did the wonders but tastes so good!
Other effects : better skin ,better hair (i also put some directly on the scalp, undiluted, and after that some carrot, rosemary oil) and further it helps a better digestion.
hope this can take away any doubts with new readers. i was just another sucker who believed for too long that the ,,normal ,, doctors were able to help me on this.
take care! Daniel"
[BETTER BUT NOT CURED] 12/26/2010: Abigail from Lawrence, Ks: "I've had a sinus infection for over a year. It showed up in varying degrees of intensity (some days there was just a mild ache and light post-nasal drip, some days there were huge headaches, some days there were major nose stuffiness/runniness and ear aches... ) but it was always there. I'm not a medicine taker, unless it's absolutely necessary, so mostly I just suffered with it. I drank hot tea and used heat packs on my face to bring relief when it was bad. Oh, and I used a colloidal silver nose spray; this helped a lot, but it never brought true healing, since the infection kept coming back. I don't have money to go to a doctor to get a prescription, and I read that antibiotics usually don't work on sinus infections anyway, since they are usually fungal in nature.
Once, while at the health food store, I saw some aromatherapy oil being advertised as helpful for sinus infections. I know I'm not supposed to mention brand names, so I'll just say that it is a mixture of essential oils like lavender, tea tree, myrtle, peppermint, and others that I don't recognize. (I don't know much about aromatherapy/essential oils... ) You put a few drops on your pinky and apply it underneath your nostrils to breathe in the fumes. For long-term infections, you should do this 3-4 times per day. They say it takes 8-10 weeks for the infection to disappear completely. I've been doing it for 5 weeks now, and I can tell the infection is almost gone. Hallelujah! Every time I apply the oil, I can feel the fumes working in my nose and going up to the sinuses. Then about 5 minutes later my nose starts running, and I am able to blow out some mucous chunks (sorry to be gross! ) I haven't suffered a sinus headache once during this time.
Most days I don't even feel the infection anymore. It does come back occasionally, so I know I'm not completely healed, but there has been great progress. And I haven't finished the 8-10 weeks yet anyway. But for those suffering from sinus infections, definitely give this a try! It's not painful at all, and there's no discomfort or drowning feeling, like there is with the nettipot. (I just can't do the nettipot. ~shiver~)"
[YEA] 06/06/2013: Cherylee from Johannesburg, South Africa: "I have suffered with really bad sinus for over 2 years. It has been steadily getting worse and worse to the point that I could not even smell or taste anything for over a year!
I would also wake up in the middle of the night and sneeze about 20 times! And mornings were the worst... just sneezing over and over till I could hardly stand.
I was in my local Dischem chemist looking for yet another cure when the sales assistant asked me if I ate BANANAS???? Bananas I asked??? She said I should just try cutting them out for a month. Well, I had already cut out dairy, wheat and sugar all to no avail so it was worth a try.
Well, its been over 6 months now and no more sneezing, sinus and my taste and smell have returned!!!! Its apparently NOT actually the bananas themselves, but the gas they use to artificially ripen soft fruit. So all fruit that is ripened with gas causes this allergic reaction, and cutting out all these fruits have stopped all my sinus... JUST AMAZING!!!"
[YEA] 06/01/2008: Alex from Los Angeles, CA: "I got a nasty sinus infection during the first week of January 2008. I went to my doctor a couple of weeks later and over the next few months I was given a variety of antibiotics, nasal sprays, singular, Claritin and a neti pot. I tried the silver spray and even used grape seed oil, oil pulling and apple cider vinegar but nothing worked until last week when my doctor gave me this simple advice.
She said: "Add two drops of BABY SHAMPOO to your saline nasal spray twice a day." I started that three days ago and I feel a thousand times better!!!!!!!! I am sending her a thank you note next week. Spread the word, use 2 DROPS OF BABY SHAMPOO IN YOUR NASAL SPRAY!"
[YEA] 06/27/2008: Tom from Asheville , NC replies: "There is credence to the claims of using baby shampoo. A study was done by the Univ of Penn. recommend mixing up a saline irrigation solution with 1% baby shampoo. The theory is this: Bacteria and fungus form a protective bio-film as a way of self preservation. This slime coat is believed to be the reason why anitbiotics and other natural cures are less effective in getting to the bacterial infection. By breaking down this bio-barrier, there higher success at eliminating the infection. The article can be found here: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18284857?dopt=Abstract. I have started mixing baby shampoo in my irrigation solution, approx 1 tsp/quart. I highly recommend it."
03/11/2009: Jean from Edwardsburg, MI replies: "How do I get the baby shampoo into my nasal spray bottle? Can't unscrew top and no other way to get it in?"
03/14/2009: Mike from South Florida, Florida replies: "The tip on all the ones I have used will pull out with a little force. Currently I have Saline Nasal spray from Publix (3 oz) and it pulled out fine. If you cant get it with your fingers try a small pair of pliers with very light pressure (so you don't clamp it shut). I hope this helps."
07/07/2009: Carole from Boynton Beach, Florida replies: "I was wondering why no one also mentioned that there is anesthetic in Baby Shampoo, does this also help with relief. My grandmother used it for her itchy eyelids with success because of this. How much per neti pot or squeeze bottle. I don't mix up a quart of saline at a time. Thanks-"
Baking Soda and Salt Water
[YEA] 02/10/2011: Enigma_aubrey from Portland, Oregon, United States: "I recently had a sinus infection, whhile feeling bloated. I was going to do a bit of a detoxing cleanse, and after I drank up the first glass of warm sea-salt and baking soda water my noses started running and I could breathe through my nose again. The entire infection cleared up soon afterwards. The only downside is that the salty water can give people an upset stomach."
Betadine and Hydrogen Peroxide Sinus Rinse
[YEA] 03/20/2011: B14a3w3 from Stewartstown, Pa: "For 2 years I have been using a capful of peroxide, premeasured NeilMed salt, 1 cup of warm water and 3 drops of Betadine once a day to prevent allergy sinus infections. I use a NeilMed squirt bottle to shoot the solution into one nasal passage and it comes out the other... Like a netipot would do. Instead of 2-3 infections a year, I have none. It has also prevented cracked skin over the cartilidge on the inside of my nose from post nasal drip irritation. My doctor said it was safe and to keep doing it since it helps. I have had infections for at least 20 years prior to trying this solution."
