Apple Cider Vinegar Steam Treatment for Sinus Infections

You'll Need:

  • Steaming Pot of Water
  • Apple Cider Vinegar - 1 Tablespoon
  • Bath Towel

After adding a Tablespoon of Apple Cider Vinegar, drape a towel over your head and neck, then carefully hold your face over a steaming pot of water (not too hot!). Breathe in the steam for several minutes, and repeat throughout the day.

Note: You can also add a drop or two of lavender oil or some essential oils from the mint family for even greater effect.

[YEA]  12/11/2007: Jennifer from Brandon, Florida: "ACV cured my daughter's sinus infection. After a week on an OTC medication, she agreed to try this remedy of ACV and Water boiling and inhaling the steam. After just a few minutes she said her headache was gone and she could breath again through her nose. I gave her the remedy twice the first day and she got up and went to school today...THANK YOU! She is still quite congested but I think that is normal and the phlem is breaking up. PS: I am looking for information on Lymes Disease in the secondary stages for my husband. He's been on antibiotics for over two months now. I have him on ACV and apple juice twice daily for his sore joints but the doctor has not given him any direction on what to do now that his antibiotic treatment is done. He will be starting a detox and pro-biotic treatment today. Any other info on what to do to help him would be appreciated."

[YEA]  02/18/2007: Katt from Arlington, VA: "Well Boy did I come down with a doozy this year. It recently got cold and started to snow so I figured that was the reason until I came across your site. The connection between ice cream and sinus problems came up. And what do you know just the night before and a few nights before actually I had been eating ice cream, Which I never eat but my roommate brought it home. I went and got ACV. I boiled it and inhaled it. I was so stuffed up I didn't even noticed or could tell the fumes were strong.Well after about 5 min after the inhaling was complete...The only word I can use to describe this action is Hocked.... I hocked up a good amount of phlegm through my throat. It was yellow and very thick. I can breath better but will still continue the treatment for the rest of the evening. Thanks for the tip."

[BETTER BUT NOT CURED]  03/23/2011: Stephz from New York, Ny, Usa replies: "After a simple cold was exacerbated by two airplane trips and seasonal weather changes, it became a sinus infection after about a week. By the second day of the infection, I was experiencing terrible pressure in my face and pain in my teeth.

I don't usually get sinus infections, so I didn't know what to do. I'm young and healthy, normally take no medication, and am very wary of antibiotics. Usually home remedies do just fine.

Besides lots of sleep and fluids (water, broth, juice), and hot showers, I've tried a sea salt rinse, drinking Apple Cider Vinegar, and steaming with both water and ACV.

It seems each of these things brings some measure of relief, but I would say steaming with and drinking ACV were most effective.

I tried one of those cold, pre-mixed ACV drinks from Whole foods, chugged it all in one sitting, and literally minutes later, saw more productive nose-blowing.

I drank two double-doses of ACV "tea" over the next 24 hours - 8 oz boiled water to 2 tbsp of ACV, or 16 oz boiled water to 4 tbsp of ACV. I added as much honey as ACV each time, heated everything together on the stove, and sipped. I'm not a big fan of vinegar, but I found this ratio pleasant, certainly tolerable for most.

Felt lessened pressure in my face, and saw more productive nose-blowing. Mucous became more clear, less green.

I was a little nervous about steaming with ACV, but I went for it.

I used about 1/2 cup ACV, 1/2 cup water, boiled together on the stove. Once it came to a boil, I poured into a bowl, and inhaled with a towel over my head. You'll want to close your mouth and eyes, and there is a hot sensation, very slight burning. Just inhale gently and take breaks if you have to. It's not so bad. In fact, you may want to try it full-strength, I think I will next time, but then the burning will obviously increase.

I did this for 5 - 10 mins.

Did not create the productivity I was hoping for, but I can now breathe completely out of the nostril that had been blocked. I still feel pressure in my face, but it has lessened slightly, along with the tooth pain.

I'm drinking a big glass of water, (the ACV seems to dry you out just a bit) then getting a good night's sleep. Planning to repeat this technique, and hoping to see results in the next few days."

[YEA]  05/02/2006: Lori from Orland, CA: "I came upon your website today looking for a natural cure for my sinus infection. Never having had one like this, I was miserable.. mostly from the severe headache, upper jaw pain and pressure. I did not want to go to the doctor, mostly because I knew he would just prescribe antibiotics (which I am against), and for the fact that I no longer have health insurance. I tried drinking 4 oz. of ACV mixed with 12 oz. of water. I noticed right away that my sinuses were clearer. But, unfortunately, my stomach became pretty upset. So I tried boiling the rest of my drink and inhaling the steam... boy, did that do the trick! My headache is almost gone and I can breathe through half of my nose!! I will continue the steam therapy throughout the day and look forward to more miraculous results! Thank you so much for this website! I can't wait to see how this helps my allergies, too! Bless you!"

03/17/2010: Randy from Wolverine Lake, Mi replies: "To make the ACV more pallatable, and get added benefits of oxygenation to your system as well as other benefits of PH balance to make your body less acidic, mix this way...

2 TBLS ACV, 1/2 tsp baking SODA to 8oz water.

(I use just a little water in the above mix and gulp it down then follow with water)

It will def make you cough in a heartbeat! I make sure my mouth is closed and VERY GENTLY breath in through my nose and hold it in as long as I can then repeat. Let me just say that I have suffered my entire life (I am 57) with sinus problems and ACV is without a doubt the most awesome cure. NOTHING will work quicker to open your sinuses and relieve the pressure... Especially if you can tolerate it full strength as I do. Read up on this site about keeping your body NON-ACIDIC!!! It is truly the key to a healthy immune system and preventing these kinds of "agonies" from happening in the first place!"

[YEA]  03/31/2006: Kelliegh from Lake Hiawatha, NJ: "Thank you for developing this website!!! I tried drinking the ACV with water it helped a little but I didn't like the taste. So I decided to boil water pour ACV in the boiled water, remove from heat and breath in with a towel over your head. This cured my Sinus infection completely I can't believe how quickly this worked. Thanks for the VALUBLE INFO!"

01/24/2006: Jason : "I am 28 years old. This year I have gotten a few sinus infections,i have always had allergies but never got these kinds of infections before. I used to drink a gallon of milk a day as a kid and recently i realized i am getting lactose intolerant and the milk in the ice cream might be the reason for the sinus problems and mucus people are getting. I often feel bad after drinking milk and because i rarely eat ice cream it has to be in the milk product."

[YEA]  12/29/2005: Nancy from Alpharetta, GA: "I suffered for 3 days with congestion and cough. Found your site on the internet yesterday, thank goodness! I started breathing the steam from the ACV/water boil several times throughout the day. It immediately cleared my sinuses. I also drank the ACV with lemon juice and honey. I slept throughout the night breathing through my nose. Will repeat this remedy today. I'm almost feeling back to normal. I will tell everyone I know about apple cider vinegar cure for colds."

[YEA]  11/23/2005: AJ from Bronx, New York: "I tried inhaling ACV 1/2 cup water 1/2 cup ACV and I boiled it for a sinus infection. I placed a towel over my head to govern the fumes and did this twice a day for 3 days. I totally cleared my sinus infection. My doctor had prescribed me an antibiotic and that didn't work. I am glad I stumbled on this. And I didn't go to the organic store like most suggest, I just used the regular one out of the grocery store. Good Health!!!!"

[YEA]  11/08/2005: Abbie from Bronx, New York: "I had this horrible sinus infection along with a lung infection. My pulmonary specialist put me on Amoxicillin and Allegra-D. This medication seemed to have made my symptoms of coughing and clogged sinuses worse. I was at the end of my rope until I stumbled on ACV. I am not big on mixing things and home remedies. I must admit I was skeptical about drinking the ACV and the right consistency. So I took a cup of ACV (Heinz brand from the local grocery store) and a cup of plain tap water and boiled it. I turned the fire off and closed my eyes and started to inhale it for approx. 5 minutes. I didn't try to overdo it nor did I become obsessive about it. And boy did it clear up all of the mucous. I continued to do this 2 times a day until it cleared. Thank you ACV. I was so tired of doctors making me sicker. I do believe that doing this with taking a vitamin C tablet has helped me tremendously. I hope this helps someone and I hope all of you feel better soon."

[YEA]  Lloyd from Tulsa: "I have found that bringing an equal amount of Apple Cider Vinegar and water to boil, then inhaling the fumes as it starts to boil, quickly relieves sinus congestion & sinus infections. Just a warning though, close your eyes and mouth when doing this...the vapors are hard to deal with."

[YEA]  03/02/2009: Liz from Fairfield, CT: "hydrogen peroxide/water/salt steambath....Yeah, baby! There's always a guy with a BIG RED NOSE doing this in cartoons....but it WORKS! My sinus problem is WAY back, deep inside my head. This really got back there and started draining the sinus cavity. I got a free facial out of it, too! BONUS!"

Steaming With Oregano

[YEA]  10/28/2009: Michelle from Atlanta, Ga: "Sinus Infection Help: I am sure this is related to the use of oil of oregano, but after using my neti pot, I put two tablespoons of Italian seasoning into a pot or my veggie steamer, and then steam myself for 10-15 minutes. It works wonders for my sinus infections. I know the oil of thyme is used in things like mouthwash, so it might be as effective as the oregano, and the other herbs in it also have medicinal value. I use an organic herb mix."

Steaming With Sea Salt

[YEA]  05/12/2009: SojournTraveler from Plymouth, Michigan: "Hi!

Great site, I appreciate reading people's actual experiences.

I go to ____ _____, a trance channeler like Edgar Cayce. For my question "How can I breath better?" I was told that I had a chronic sinus infection. The source advised me to put two to three tablespoons of sea salt into three cups of boiling water, place a towel over my head like a tent, and being careful not to burn myself to breath the steam for two to three minutes, for 9 days then twice a week thereafter.

Worked perfectly. Since mucous needs salt to move, and salt can have antiseptic properties, it all makes sense. The other ideas, such as actually pouring a liquid through my sinuses, aren't attractive to me at all, although I acknowledge their effectiveness."

09/17/2009: Paul from Arlington, Va replies: "You do realize that there is absolutely no salt in the steam entering your nasal passages, no? Basic science, here."
01/18/2012: Lloyd from Bc, Canada replies: "Actually, some of the dissolved salt will be carried by the steam. I am a marine engineer and we make fresh water out of salt while at sea and our evapoator units use mesh screens to filter out salt from the weather vapours."

Tea Tree Oil, Mucinex

[YEA]  10/23/2008: Sadie from Hamilton, Montana: "After being on 8 antibiotics all summer for chronic sinus infections, it occured to me that the high dollar antibiotics were just not clearing up my problem. I continued having facial pain in my forehead, and yellow/green mucus that was stubborn to every single medication I was taking. My nasal passages felt closed off, and anything coming out was like glue.

I decided after reading about cilia and keeping mucus flowing, I immediately STOPPED all antihistimines, nasal sprays, and decongestants. They are drying and eventually dry the gunk up in layers in your head.

Neti pot and nasal washes were aggravating the problem furthers, so I halted that. Sometimes, too much of a good thing paralyzes the cilia. We want the cilia happy, so it can do it's job.

My next step was to find a way to fight the infection, which I grew to understand that it had to be fungal, since antibiotics were not clearing this up. My second step was to find a way to thin out the mucus and keep it flowing without burning my head out with sprays and irrigations.

Here's how I cleared up my sinuses:

I took a Q tip, and swabbed it in pure tea tree oil. Enough to get a bit of oil on it, not dripping. I carefully swabbed some up in my nasal passage and inside of my nose on each side. There is a momentary sting. Within about 5 - 10 minutes, the blocked mucus begins to move down, either out of the nose or back of the throat. I coughed it out, and it was yellow gunk trapped up in the sinuses. I only apply this 3 x a day when very congested. After a couple of days, I only needed to apply the tea tree morning, and night.

My next action was to thin this mucus without the decongestants that were making me jittery and my heart race.
I began a regimen of taking regular Mucinex, 2 tablets morning, and late at night. Drink ALOT of fluids with this, so it can do it's job.

After going to the doctor and spending hundreds of dollars all summer long, it took these two simple things to clear the infection.

After day 3 on this regimen, the mucus that is coming out is becoming clearer, with less yellow/green mixed in.

I hope this helps someone out there, end their suffering today."

Ted's Remedies

Ted from Bangkok, Thailand: "My father's 10+ year sinus problem was cured simply by taking plenty of vitamin C taken for 2-3 months The dose I prefer is between 1000-3000 mg /day taken for about a month period. It is important that to clear some mucus, by liquifying them, taking 500 mg of N Acetyl Cysteine a day. Taking some vitamin A, weekly dose and vitamin E twice weekly may help too, one is to control the mucus, the other is to raise the antioxidant to protect the body against weakened immunity. The other, is to stay away from carpets, they are source of fungus. If carpet is to be cleaned or disinfected, spraying with borax solution and hydrogen peroxide helps.

It is necessary to alkalize yourself, in your condition I would imagine to be somewhat of a strong acidosis condition, so this would be about between 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda taken 2 times a day. A more better formula is to take that with citric acid, such as 1/4 teaspoon of citric acid and 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda, if you can find the citric acid! Once the body is more alkalized the fungus cannot grow. I have found rather by trial and error that certain kinds of viruses, and possibly fungus resides deep in the body's system where certain supplements are hard to reach, in which case I also found that only of BHT 2000 mg taken for only 3 days completely stopped most of the sinus and mucus issue. But it must be remembered that not all microbes do get killed with any one single supplements. But it is worth a try, at least for me. Some people I found have almost nonexistent iodine level as being the cause of chronic sinus. So taking kelp capsules as an iodine source will help, but it just takes a little time, by raising the body's own immune system. Zinc also help the same, and taken at weekly dose of zinc gluconate, 50 mg. For borax the typical dose is once or twice a week at 1/8 teaspoon in one liter of water or 1/4 teaspoon in one liter of water, plus several of drops of hydrogen peroxide (about 10 drops 3% H2O2 per liter). For Nasal irrigator the best one that is safe and non controversial is sea salt mixed with water. The concentration of sea salt should have the same salinity as your tears. Some people do add borax, but the amount the add is quite small, such as 50 mg per 50 cc. of water, well dissolved, should be relatively small. If not all is dissolved, remove the portion that does not dissolve.

In summary the one's I have best experience, at least for me, from sinus problems is the BHT, N Acetyl Cysteine, Borax, vitamin C sodium ascorbate and baking soda. The best one for me is the BHT, but again, I used BHT to prevent bird flu, which apparently some viruses are now displaying properties of bird flu viruses, by residing in the brain and neural regions, preventing the body's immune system from killing off the virus. Viruse do evolve by exchanging DNA, across species by what scientist refer to as horizontal gene transfer. Try to avoid coffee and replace them with green tea, UNSUGARED, and NO MILK. They do have antiviral and anti-inflammatory properties in green tea and may help the sinus condition as they have anti-fungal properties too."

2005: Ted from Bangkok, Thailand writes: "My father cured his sinus problems by taking large dosages of vitamin C for about 1-2 months. I had the same sinus problem and vitamin C did indeed work - it runs in the family, I guess.

Mayo Clinic some years ago did a study on sinus infections and its causes. It turns out that a large majority of people who have sinus issues had a fungus infection in their sinus areas. The cause turns out that it came from mildew and fungus of the carpets. If you clean the carpet or remove it that might just help the problem. Also, drinking diluted tea tree oil, thyme oil, might complement by clearing the blood area as well.

Yes, tea tree oil (it is anti-fungal) in dilution will help with sinus issues and is the one that produce the least irritation. A product called Sinus Buster is reported to do very well. The product is patented and uses diluted cayenne peppers to put in sinus area. However, there are other that have similar properties, such as white thyme oil, wild oregano (they are hot - so be careful), and eucalyptus oils. Some people use colloidal silver and mix these along with diluted tea tree oil and eucalyptus oil. This is reported to have worked well. Every time I have a sinus problems, I chew pure menthol crystals and breathe the fumes from my mouth and into my nose. This might also help your sinuses. My sister had an allergy problems for nearly 10 years, and somewhat of sinus problems. That was cured using N-Acetylcysteine.Vinegar is reported to to destroy fungus and have anti-fungal properties, therefore a using a humidifier and breathing in pure vinegar (5% acetic acid) might also help destroy the fungus. Ozone has been reportedly helpful with sinus provided it is used in conjunction with other materials reported here. Ozone destroys fungus and sinus would be relieved."

EC: *** Read Ted's Extensive Q&A about treating Sinus Infections.***

02/16/2011: Mark from Las Vegas, NV replies: "Vitamin C is NOT good for everyone. (other than naturally occuring)

I have been in the healthiet period of my life before that. I had sinus infections colds etc... Most of my life.

3 Years ago after two sinus infections in a row. I learned about urine therapy. My sinus infection going into my chest was beaten in less than a week with urine theapy. Both drinking and in Neti Pot.

Since that time. I have been very healthy maybe only getting a mild winter cold that I get rid of in a few days by staying on Urine Therapy.

I alwasy noticed that when ever I took vitiamin C it would ALWASY prolong the illness. Only once or twice using Emer____-C did it not do that. But I don't like that formula either.

I read how important C was I also read Ted's formula of Mixing Ascorbic Acid with Baking Soda.

I started out with 1, 000 miligrams of C with the baking soda. And moved it up. Daily untill basclly I got really sick (taking about 10000-12000mg a day) Which was what I was trying to avoid in the first place.

As long as I was taking Vitamin C I could not get well. As soon as I stopped taking it I started getting better.

1) I believe it actualy MADE ME get flu like symtoms.

2) I know for a fact it gave me gas, boating and intestional problems as well.

To all of those people reading about high Vitamin C dosages beery careful it can make you very miserable and sick.

And to those saying it was probably a healing crisis. Let me say that when you 100% healthy with no complaints, feeling good, lot's of energy... Why would I want or need a healing crisis. In other words I should hae just passed on the C.

So my lesson learned is if it's not broken don't fix it (does not mean you can't take step for mainanance and health, but don't but your body through a crisis if you don't have to). And we all respond differently.

Sure C in moderation. But it's still best to get it naturally from fruit because of the bioflavinoids and you body will not have the adverse reactions."

03/18/2011: Paulina from Helsinki, Finland replies: "that's not true. YOU CAN'T OVERDOSE VITAMIN C AND IT DOESN'T HAVE ANY SIDE EFFECTS, your immune system can get only stronger, bad bacteria in kidneys, intestins & reproductive passages are going to be killed! And you may sneeze as a effect your body is fighting infection, which is much beter than not sneezing while the body is not fighting anything! "

04/08/2011: Sinussufferer from Chicago, Illinois, Us replies: "Ted mentions using baking soda with citric acid and also salt water (Sodium Chloride) solution.
The following ingredients are better at fighting sinusitis:

- Sodium Chlorite: Sea Salt (Sodium Chloride) as microbe inhibiting properties. A better alternative at inhibiting microbes is Sodium Chlorite. Sodium Chlorite is added to packaged meat because of its ability to inhibit bacterial growth. Also acidified sodium chlorite used in Sinox produces Chlorine Dioxide which is shown to kill a wide range of microorganisms including bacteria, viruses, spores, yeast, fungus, slime colonies, etc. Chloride Dioxide does all this without damaging human tissue.

- Sodium Carbonate is better than Sodium Bicarbonate (Baking Soda). The buildup of mucus puts pressure on the sinus cavity wall which causes pain. When acidified, Sodium Carbonate helps loosen persistent mucus, thereby relieving the pressure on the sinus cavity wall and reducing pain. Baking soda tends to be more irritating to the sinuses.

- Ingredients should be mixed with Lactic, Citric and Phosphoric acids which help maintain the ph of the final solution to the slightly-acidic 6. 3-6. 8 level.

There are hi-tech nasal sprays available that contain these chemicals in the correct proportion and help alleviate the problems caused by Sinusitis.

Best wishes."

04/10/2011: Alaskamidwife from Anchorage, Alaska, Usa replies: "Just FYI, on super high dose vitamin C. There ARE some side effects. It can loosen the stools. It should be avoided in early pregnancy for risk of miscarraige."

04/07/2012: Inga from Rome replies: "The recommendation of Borax is something that one should take very seriously. Borax actually has very high toxicity and is in other words poisonous to humans. It should never be around the house, let alone put into one's body. Stay away. Google borax toxicity and learn.

Other thought is that all artificial vitamins and supplement other then those that come in natural forms of fruits and vegetables and other foods are dangrously concentrated and it is never known how much of any is safe, besides they are not LIVE they are DEAD so they don't bring you any benefits rather then possible concerns."

09/01/2012: Ohreally? from Atlanta, Ga replies: "Inga From Rome: OBVIOUSLY you have NOT spent much time on this site!! BORAX is NOT TOXIC, unless it is in ridiculously huge amounts! There are hours worth of reading within this site on the BENEFITS OF TAKING BORAX!! Do yourself a favor and know what you're talking about before you make such STUPID COMMENTS!! Also: is EVERYTHING posted on WebMD and Google supposed to the "gospel" truth regarding warnings etc. ? NO!!! Ask yourself where the money comes from & who benefits!!"
11/05/2012: Linda from Kelowna, Bc replies: "Maybe they meant boric acid."

[WORKED TEMPORARILY]  05/07/2012: Sue from Tauranga, New Zealand: "I started reading this site this afternoon after a month of awful sinus problems, following a nasty cold. I've taken Prednisone, pseudoephadrile (?) and anitbiotics, some days felt better and some days worse. Would think it was getting better and then the next, like today, wake up with the right hand side of my face puffed out and unable to go to work due to the pressure in my head and face.

Well thank you Earth Clinic and all your writers. I went and got some ingredients this afternoon, made tomato tea and the apple cider vinegar mix. The relief was instant!! I was able to de-dust the entire house this evening, vacuum under beds etc etc. I wasn't able to get off the sette this morning. It's 6 hours since I took the first batch of tea and ACV, can just feel the headache coming back, so having more ACV before bed. I am 'looking forward' to trying the oil pulling in the morning and crossing my fingers that the misery may be over soon!"

[YEA]  05/07/2012: Jennifer from Sunrise, Fl, Usa replies: "Sue, I had the same great results with Tomato Tea. Kicked my nasty sinus infection in record time! However, it's important to continue to take it when symptoms return to prevent your sinus congestion from coming back. I had to make about 4 or 5 over a course of 3 days (and I took the ACV too over a course of 5 days) before I was fully cured. Hope this helps and feel better! Jennifer"
