It's difficult to overdose with simple uncombined food like blackstrap molasses. The flavor will change to be repugnant after a person consumes too much. Did you notice? The flavor returns to be yummy after the body needs more. This has been my experience. Entering detox mode doesn't have to mean one has eaten too much, but it's a good idea to slow down.

I had started taking 2 tablespoons of mollases today. I wanted to raise my iron blood levels. I took it with warm water and apple cider vingegar in the morning with an empty stomach. Now it's night and I'm having a terrible headache and feeling sleepy and dizzy. After that and reading all the side effects in other comments too, I'm not sure if I will continue consuming it. Probably not.

Black Strap Molasses Side Effects

I have had insomnia for the last 20+ years with increasing severity. 2 nights ago I wrestled with sleep again. My belly felt hard and bloated, giving me racing heart beat, heat and anxiety. I felt constipated. I remembered BSM being a laxative and took 1 Tablespoon without any food and drank 10 oz of water a few minutes afterwards. My bloating went away and eased my belly.

In the morning I took 1 Tbsp. BSM on empty stomach all by itself, than during the day one more Tbsp. and in the evening before bed time 1 Tbsp. BSM all by itself. I woke up this morning, having the best sleep of my life, ever (and I am 72), deep refreshing and vitalizing 10 hour sleep with only 2 trips to the bath room. I could not believe it.
No side effects what so ever so far. I must also say that I have Leaky Gut which makes my body unable to absorb most nutrients. That is probably the reason why I was so mineral deficient. I would give it a try for what ever is ailing you but remember that it has to be ORGANIC, UNSULPHURED Blackstrap Molasses, otherwise you get concentrated doses of Glyphosate and other chemicals into your system.

I will continue using 3 Tbsp. for 3 more days and than slow down to 2 Tbsp./day and eventually to 1 Tbsp. per day. I don't think it will hurt you with that dosage. But try it for yourself and see how your body reacts to it. Good luck to every body.

P.S. Besides of insomnia, I am also trying to heal my leaky gut and rheumatoid arthritis using BSM as a key supplement.

WOW! After reading all these comments about side effects, who wants to try the Molasses? I have been eating Molasses since I was a small child, I didn't even know they had all these side effects. When I start new vitamins, minerals and herbs, I only take that one to see if I will have any type of reaction. But you do have to watch out if you are taking any kinds of medications, they are unreal in there own right.

I take BSM in organic apple cider vinegar every other day and every time I take it before breakfast, it works wonders. My leg pain, alleviates in 30 minutes, so for me it performs the function of Advil. However, when I take it before going to bed, I never wake up in between sleeps and have a good sleep.

For me the ACV is antiflammatory as it relieves me from the leg pain, though for the time being, but it works.

Best Way to Take Blackstrap Molasses
Posted by Rita (Virginia) on 04/03/2019

I've read that mixing blackstrap molasses with dairy products can inhibit it's absorption due to the calcium in the dairy products. This is confusing since the molasses itself has calcium. I love mixing blackstrap molasses with plain yogurt, so I am concerned that I may not be getting the most nutrition from this mixture. Does anyone have any knowledge of this? I've also read that Vitamin C helps with the bioavailability of plant-derived iron, so a source of Vitamin C should be taken along with the blackstrap molasses.

Posted by Dr. Sean Golden (San Diego) on 06/06/2020

Blackstrap molasses isn't high in iron like red meat or iron pills. It's similar to spinach.

The difference is that BSM has fulvic and humic acids from the soil that helps plants and animals better absorb and retain minerals, like iron. Thus, this warning isn't needed.

Posted by Sean (San Diego) on 06/06/2020

I completely understand the caution that should be in place when taking *iron pills*.

Yet, you do not need to be cautious about BSM. It is processed, but in the *opposite* way of other foods. In processed foods, the nutrients are removed and only the macros like the carbs and the calories are left. In short, empty calories.

With BSM, the processing actually removes excess sugar and condenses the nutrients.

BSM doesn't increase iron levels by supplying iron. It's actually not high in iron. 1 steak would have more iron than 20 BSM drinks.

BSM increases iron in the body because it contains fulvic and humic acids. These are present in the soil and the helps plants and animals *absorb and retain* minerals. Thus, BSM makes the iron you take from BSM and other sources stay in your body more effectively.

Becky, I never heard that BSM has anything to do with headaches. But I do know that one might get them from trying out a new remedy that one is not too sure of. I guess it's the stress of not knowing what to expect. I'm pretty sure the BSM itself is not causing headaches.

I got awful insomnia from blackstrap molasses. I think maybe I was taking too much. I put two tablespoons in my dandelion root tea (tastes like coffee! ) and I would sometimes do this twice s day. I am a vegetarian and my body is not used to that much iron. I want a way to incorporate it back into my diet, but I can't function without sleep.

Dental Numbing
Posted by Mike (Florida) on 03/12/2018
5 out of 5 stars

I am a 69 year old male and I have had difficult or almost impossible experiences in becoming numb for dental work such as fillings. This has been larger problem during the last 20 years. So bad that I unfortunately needed to go home without the dental work ever being accomplished because the injections would not take affect. Please know, that I have a very experienced and super good dentist. Sometimes, after multiple Xylocaine injections and waiting for over an hour, I would unfortunately need to go home without the procedure even being started because I could not get numb! Nonetheless, I would always need to wait an hour or longer before I would finally become at least somewhat numb. I seldom would ever get fully numb to the point of being comfortable.

All of that changed, however. Because of all of the Magnesium, manganese, calcium and iron contained in black molasses, I began consuming about two tablespoons of the black molasses starting three hours prior to my dental appointments.

I mix one teaspoon of molasses into an 10 ounce cup of hot water and drink as in drinking warm tea. I drink a total of four cups of the molasses mix (one teaspoon of molasses per each cup of water) during the three hours prior and then proceed to the dentist. At that point, I have two full tablespoons worth of black molasses in my system.

Then, usually 20-30 minutes after my Xylocaine injections, I become fully numb and experience no pain at all. What a relief! I do not claim any particular knowledge as to why this technique works so well. Perhaps the extra hydration helps and perhaps all of the extra mineral consumption helps to cause the gum tissue to function better? I do not claim to understand the science. And perhaps it is simply my imagination? I suspect t hat it mostly involves the added minerals.

I told my dentist about my process but he had no comment except to say, “if it works that is a good thing”! And so I will always use the black molasses prior to Xylocaine injections by the dentist.

I had low iron for quite some time and I was beginning to get concerned because every time I tested, my levels would be lower than the prior test. I read about blackstrap molasses and gave it a try. In only two months of taking 1/2 a teaspoon of molasses mixed in warm water daily, here are my test results. Ferritin shot up from 19 to 48 and Iron shot up from 50 to 129! I'm so excited and wanted to share my results.

I also have thalassemia. Most doctors do not know the difference between iron poor blood and thalassemia when seen microscopically. A special test for thalassemia is required. Fortunately, my general doctor sent me to a hematologist to find the cause of my anemia.

Several years later I became pregnant. I went to "the best" obgyn clinic in a nearby city. I told them about my thalassemia and they ignored me. I saw four doctors there who all prescribed iron supplements. I repeatedly told them to research thalassemia, and I even mailed them material on the subject, still they ignored me.

I refused to take the extra iron. If I had not known better, these doctors could have caused my unborn son and myself serious health health issues such as heart damage. At age three, my son was also diagnosed with anemia. His pediatrician -- "the best in town" -- insisted I put him on iron supplements, even after I told him my son might have thalassemia. I refused and insisted he prescribe a thalassemia test at the nearby hospital. The doctor reluctantly agreed. The test showed my son also has thalassemia.

I bought Plantation BSM. I was very excited to take it for the energy. I took 1 tablespoon and the next day had explosive diarrhea for hours. I do not have stomach issues or IBS. So I waited 3-4 days and only took a teaspoon. The next day explosive diarrhea. Then I got smart and ordered 2 more bottles of "Organic" BSM. Once again a week or two go by before I try the organic. I start with a teaspoon...the next day explosive diarrhea. What in the world am I doing wrong? I ate food when I took it and I tried on an empty stomach. Why is this happening? Please tell me what the problem could be.

"By the way, molasses is a superfood indeed. They start with a field of plants, remove the water, fiber, sugar, and what's left is concentrated organic minerals! "

Again, with all due respect, this is simply incorrect information that can be confirmed by doing a simple google search. The water, sugar, and even small amounts of fiber aren't "removed" -- molasses has a moderate sugar content and thus a glycemic index of 55, compared to say, meat, which has a glycemic index of 0.

While the sugar content is less than 'sugar', it's definitely in there.

HI U Mspat, what most don't know is that the farmers spray their soy corps with Round-up at the end of the growing season so all the plants will die at the same time. They do that here in our county. This way you get a double dose of garbage. Heard all my life " don't eat the raw vegetables from Mexico". Now it's ...... don't eat anything from the U.S. The feral hogs are the ones spreading ecoli in our lettuce, etc. That is the reason we try to raise as many of our vegetables and fruit as we can. =========ORH=======

Perhaps cooking with cast iron would be of natural benefit for us all.

And today, we now know that most all soy is GMO. So I believe, like our corn & wheat supply, the GMOs are playing havoc with our bodies.

Did you ever find out the cause of why you got so fatigued after stopping the BSM? I came on here for the same thing, but I bought regular unsulfured molasses, and didn't notice this til just yesterday, I got the wrong kind. Today I have been so fatigued, and wondered what caused it so I came online looking. I just wonder if the regular molasses may cause the fatigue. I sure hope the BSM does not, as I heard it is suppose to help with energy. I just ordered the BSM organic this time I make sure, I hope it stops my constant bleeding. Every time I go in for blood work my Iron is always low, so I am assuming it's still low since I have been bleeding for 4 months. I don't want to iron overload by taking the BSM, but can a TSP or TBSP cause iron over load taking it daily?

BSM is as I understand, quite an excellent product but if you looking for something to slow " grey hair" you will need Biotin or Vitamin H .. My mum used to read books by Gaylord Hauser a very forward thinking nutritionist in Australia in the 70's and as a result of that study, started eating raw wheatgerm with skim milk and once a week would add a raw egg.. That would be her breakfast for over 25 yrs! She will turn 90 next year and her hair has only started to go grey in the last 10 yrs.(. She is currently in a nursing home and my family would like her to be deemed as a dementia patient, but all her bone density tests have been 110% and her mental facilities are the same. In fact in her hospice she is only one of 3 patients who does not have dementia ... What does that say about our eating habits?) A Professor from one of the teaching hospitals in Sydney spoke to her one day about her lack of grey hair and asked her about her early diet.. And he told her that the wheatgerm contained significant amounts of Biotin which prevents the hair from going grey .. It would interesting to see the correlation between wheatgerm and BSM? Thanks .. MARILYN,,,,,,, I'm sure you are aware that molasses and Black Strap Molasses are two different syrups. The Black Strap Molasses has gone through 3 different boilings and contains a far greater amount of nutrients, especially iron.

My PT instructor was not aware of that. She is low on iron, but the prescription causes her stomach pain. Thus, she did did not address her deficiency until I told her about BSM.

I think some of this site did not realize the difference in molasses and BSM.

Joanne has raised an important point about the sugar content of molasses. Sugar has been implicated in the current obesity and diabetes "epidemics" and many of us have been steering clear of as much sugar (especially white sugar-or white anything for that matter! ) as is possible to exclude from our diets. A bit is needed for the brain of course. To cure cancer with molasses? Stretching things a bit far I think. I am trying not to blow a gasket here! However, molasses has been touted as an exception to the "no/low sugar" rule on account of the fact that it is the un-refined component of the extraction process AND moreover, it contains so many beneficial minerals and vitamins and gosh, do we ever need those friendly guys! BUT sugar cane is often grown on nutrient-depleted soils and subject to quite a lot of herbicide treatment unfortunately. Think mass, mono horticulture for this crop. But, if you grab the organic version, you might be on firmer ground. I try the brew whenever I remember to take it which certainly isn't every day. Also, the thought occurs to me that there is more than one type of sugar in molasses and therefore is a more balanced product.

Sucrose would seem to be more suspect than fructose but the jury is now out on too much fructose also. I guess we could all worry ourselves to death when it comes to our nutrition and how to source the good things in life. But hey, knowledge is power when it comes to fueling our bodies and those of our children. I hope Joanne gets more responses. What does E.C have to say on this vexed question please?

Posted by Mmsg (Somewhere, Europe) on 09/08/2016

Joanne, you would take it with baking soda. Read up on that. When you mix them in hot water it'll foam for a bit.

The theory is that the sugar in the molasses is a bait for the baking soda to get where it's needed.

Hi there,

I have never tried blackstrap molasses but I might be willing to take. Just kind of skeptical as to what I read here as blackstrap molasses has been used for curing cancer. This is because I have read where cancer cells love sugar and/or carbs and multiply that way. I'm just wondering if that would be defeating the purpose for cancer patients, since molasses contain sugars and carbs. Can anyone set me straight on this?

Did you check your Hat/Cap team color? If you use it everyday? Just like maybe the blue legs symptoms people have caused by wearing jeans perhaps?

BSM takes time and you have to also make sure you are eating well and NOT color your hair. Unless you are using Henna to color your hair, Hair dye from the store or even if you go to a salon, will create hydrogen peroxide in your body and in your scalp and begin to grey your hair. Hair color companies know this and keep you coming back to color that grey hair. So, don't give up, sure you are getting plenty of rest, eat Whole Foods and drink plenty of water and take at least 2 tablespoons of blackstrap molasses a day.
