I had toenail fungus for 5yrs. started using virgin coconut oil applied topically with amazing results. Used loceryl lacquer for 3yrs did not get rid of it. Used some oxygenated melaluca cream which helped & may have cured it but smelled so bad it really wasn't practical. I read about coconut oil on internet & gave it a go, i didn't think it would seriously work. I massaged it into top of nail & all around it & made sure it was under toenail which was easy as it is liquid (hardens in cold weather but melts on contact with skin). Now 1 big toenail totally cured, other toenail is almost gone but it was much worse and was first to be infected. Absolutely amazing and i don't even apply it everyday!!! Doesn't smell. I rub it into all my other toenails (hoping this will prevent them from getting it in them). I bought a brand from my local health food shop and made sure it was 100% virgin and this one was cold pressed-don't know if that means anything but i'm sure other brands would work, I am just thrilled with results and grateful that i gave it a go.

I am 51 and I started using unrefined coconut oil for my hair. Being in the South and working outside my hair was in bad shape. I started using it on my hair and wow what a difference. My hair is soft and the color is great. I use it on my face arms body and my husband used sunblock and kept getting white blisters on his ears started using coconut oil and they went away. I now take coconut orally and I too started the sick side effects. I reduced the amount and it cleaned my colon, I now go twice a day. My muscles do not ache in the mornings, no stiff neck. I have been using the coconut oil now for 8 months.

I bought coconut oil originally for my hair, which makes the hair very shiny and silky. I used the end of a paint brush to apply it, worked it through, and left it on overnight with a wrap over it. Wash thoroughly the next morning, but do not use conditioner or any other additive, you won't need to for a few days, hair looks and feels great. I couldn't figure out how to "eat" it, which didn't seem desirable, but I added it to tea (black currant) and it was quite good, not very greasy, goes down very nicely!

Could you please elaborate on the amount of coconut oil in the netti pot? How many drops or how much in a cup of warm water? I can't stand the constant stuffiness sounding as if I have a cold in my nose and recently developed nasal vestibulitis which will not heal and causes such intense itching it is driving me crazy. Thank you for any suggestions.

Coconut Oil has cured my H pylori infection. I would recommend it to anybody who is suffering from this nasty bacteria. Go for cold pressed extra virgin coconut oil and it will surely kill this bacteria forever. Also please do not consume any coffee and dairy product while on this treatment. Eat healthy and drink lots of water. Believe in nature.

Kim: I have spent 7 years studying folk medicine from cellular biologists, sports nutritionists, old people and the food they eat, and this perplexes me. You take the oil, you get better, then you get worse, so you stop and get better again. You could email the experts, Tropical Traditions, and ask them.

I use 1 tbsp of Coconut Oil and I add a few drops of oil of wild oregano for immune support OR clove oil if I have a toothache. I average 5 days a week and I do it in the morning. For three years I have not had a cold or flu. I started OP because I couldn't afford a dentist and I am thrilled with the results. Whiter, stronger teeth and pinker gums. Feeling good. I learned about this from Earth Clinic then checked out Bruce Fife's book from the library. Happy swishing!!

Hi, I read the book by Mary Newport on Alzheimers and she talked about coconut oil and I then started reading web sites to find out more.

I was hit by a car in the abdomen at 3 and flew 15 feet and hit a firehydrant with my head, so I have trauma to the brain, ADHD , Dyslexia and memory problems and learning challenges... so I followed some things I read and started on a tsp a day in my oatmeal and put a little on my skin and it soaked right in. My skin is EXTREMELY SENSITIVE , but NO Problems with the coconut oil. I am up to 3- 7 tsp. a day and coat my face neck hands and feet daily. dry heels are GONE.

I got a little acne at first and I've always had some but I haven't had any in a while , just kept putting the oil on the outbreaks. Hope it helps.

I have been using organic virgin coconut oil for quite a while now and must say... wowwww... I aIso use it for cooking, and applying it on my lips and face and have noticed the great changes.. I eat from the jar around 3-4 teaspoons a day and love it not to mention the great favor it adds to tea. I can only say anyone that is having problems with it especially in their bowel movements must be using a cheap imitation brand. I have tried both the jar brand and also by the bulk at bulk barn in canada. It's also a little cheaper at around $8.75 per kilo or 2.5 pounds.. I will be using it for ever now and everyone I talk to loves it in cooking with their foods and also in their salads by melting it down in a pan.

I have 100% all natural coconut oil that has worked really well for my hair. At the age of 48 my hair is drier than it used to be and the pricey conditioner I have wasn't helping. The coconut oil has made an amazing difference in my hair and it hasn't ruined my dye job. But I leave mine on for about 45 mins. Not sure what the diff is between virgin and natural.

Hi Erin; I used black cumin (Nigella Sativa) for internal fungus and Yeast infection and it give me a very good result and a complete cure within one week, I think if you use it, it may give the same.

The way I used is: grind it then add ACV, let it stand around one hour to be a soft paste, take internally one teaspoon 2 -3 times a day (before or after meal), and put this paste externally 2 times a day

Not: don't grind alot of black cumin, just prepare for 2-3 days every time and keep it tightly in a jar because it oxidize by air.

While shopping at the grocer a few yrs back, I decided to purchase and try some cranberry juice and see what happens. Approx 6 oz juice on day one, repeat on day two, and by day three get a (at least temporary) boost in health. But it was only a few more days fallowing that my stomach became very upset with the caustic action of the Cranberry that is often reported.

In this case of aggravation, the simple alternative is the sugar D-Mannose. After suffering sudden and very high pertension, I was prescribed Lisinopril and got somewhat stable within an hr or two, but was yet hardly even able to walk (i was actually going about the house in a wheelchair) while a family member helped with chores. What better timing than I had just received some D-Mannose in the mail. I knew that my kidneys were at least in-part responsible for the hbp. I took about 2 grms of D-Mannose and within 20 min was out of the wheelchair and going about the house doing whatever needed done.

Fortunately, my digestive system has improved enough that the Cranberry doesn't aggravate near as much as before. Also I use concentrated soft-gels as apposed to otc juice.

As a side-note and in conclusion, I recently read an article recommending Cranberry as part of a regimen to improve urinary health of men suffering from enlarged prostate. The "holistic" approach proves the best in this case.

I will tell you something interesting. There is a province/state in India named "KERALA" which is derived from the word "KERAM" meaning coconut in its native language, which is "Malayalam". It is the land of coconut trees.

People here use only Coconut Oil for their cooking, for almost everything. It is one of the staple food in this province. It is also applied in the hair by most of the people.

The population of "Kerala" is 33 Million, then you can imagine what a staple food it is. So, you can take coconut oil. Good Health

Hannah: First make sure your air, food, and water are pure; then begin detoxing your body with the best women's multivitamin/mineral supplement you can afford. Also supplement the glutathione precursor NAC or N-Acetyl-Cysteine (this will detox the liver and more). One of the major problems w/ the vegan diet is lack of quality protein. For overall recovery, strength, stamina, etc. Either take Liver tablets or eat cooked liver as it is one of the most nutritionally dense foods. Whey protein powder mixed w/ milk or juice is also a very excellent quality protein.

If I were you, I would put a little bit of coconut oil on the back of your hand, and leave it there for a few hours. If you notice that specific part of your hand starts to turn a little red or reacting in any way, you may be allergic to coconut oil.

I'm female and your age too and I'm very sensitive to many holistic products, and I am allergic to coconut oil. I found out the hard way though by putting some on my face like lotion, and it turned my face all red and irritated. I made sure it was organic and everything. I'm even allergic to apple cider vinegar!

So once you clear that away, and if you find out you arent allergic, then it just may be your body cleansing and rebuilding itself. Stopping the dose may just prevent you from gaining the benefits. Theres alot of information already posted here on how to introduce it gradually.

hope this helps!

Anytime you start using a remedy that is supposed to help cleanse & purify the body or flush illness out of the body, you need to be prepared for side effects such as nausea, headaches, tiredness, etc. Used herbs that help to cleanse your body. For instance, herbs such as red clover blossoms & burdock root help to cleanse the blood. Milk thistle, cinnamon, barberry bark, peppermint leaft & ginger root help cleanse the liver & gallbladder. There are several good formulas & remedies, even accupressure, that can be used to cleanse the liver & gallbladder, a process that should be used in conjunction with any cleansing process. Certain types of hot herbal baths & cold wraps can help pull impurities out of the body thru the skin. And there are, of course, some herbal enemas that help to cleanse the lower bowels.

If you have a sudden reaction to a cleansing, simply back off of it for a day or two or change your schedule so that you're doing it every other day or just a couple of times a week, at first, instead of everyday. You can increase it as your body gets more used to it & the negative reactions become less.

Also keep on hand items that will help to boost your energy levels or help you to sleep better. Things like ACV, honey, blackstrap molasses & bee pollen can help increase your energy. Concentrated supergreens drink mixes & other herbs in capsule form can help do the same.

I am seeing a lot of credits for coconut oil and while living in a country that used to have coconut trees every where you go, it has quickly become the thing of the past. Coconut oil was the only cooking oil in the old days but its unheard of nowadays. You can't even buy it at groceries.

Now when you guys talk about CO, do you mean virgin coconut oil VCO? So are you really cooking with VCO. It must have cost a bomb. Will ordinary coconut oil have the same benefits?

And what about palm oil? Is it any good?

Raw VCO is best since is not processed. The cheapest I have been able to find it is $18 for a quart. It should be white not off white. A very good site to get info on VCO and palm oil is tropicaltraditions.com. They sell both, regularily have specials and have wonderful recipes as well, many of them gluten free. Yes it is expensive but compared to drugs and doctors, its cheap.

The easiest way of all I have found, to get it into my body, is in my morning coffee. It tastes good with a subtle coconut taste. Very easy, hassle free! Hope this helps, Lisa

I take a tbsp of coconut daily, but I cannot chew & swallow the solid form. I keep a glass drizzle bottle on an electric candle warmer. I turn it on in the mornings when I get up & the oil melts in about 30 minutes. I take my dose & then switch off the warmer until next time. I do use the solid for pulling, but I just let it melt before swishing. I just cannot do it for swallowing, I gag every time : )

If you can't manange swallowing the oil, you can use organic coconut milk and make it into a milk shake/smoothie with yoghurt or kefir and fruit etc. you're still getting the oil but less concentrated. In his book on Coconut Oil, Dr Fife says that 1 tablespoon of oil equals 80 millilitres of coconut milk which naturally must be all well mixed to a smooth paste so you get the fat. He says you need 3.5 tablespoons a day, but when my kinesiologist tested me, my body was happy with just 1 a day. You can also cook with it, roast or fry, make cakes and biscuits/cookies etc, even spread it on toast. And it really works

Hi, sell by date is often used to make you throw up stuff that is still good to use internally or externally! I think that you should have a good look at your VCO and decide if you think that it is still good or not! If you see no difference at all.... It is probably good! People here in Europe are throwing away millions worth of food and other things just because of the dates while most of it is perfectly alright! I wouldn't do it with meat, fish, dairy.... But then you see they are not ok anymore! Some countries are now trying to change the way food is labled to avoid such a lot of waste!

Hello, can someone please recommend a good coconut oil that is available in BC Canada? Does it have to be organic and / or expeller pressed ? (don't know what that means lol )

I would also really appreciate if someone could answer some questions.

I was wondering about its use as a deodorant and after reading the many posts I'm a bit confused: does the oil HAVE to be extra virgin? How to apply it on underarms, how much? Will it be greasy and leave oil marks? Does it have to be solid or runny and does it matter?

Also I have read that some are eating it for general well being, how much and how often? Should it be cold or hot and is it better than apple cider vinegar? I know I'm asking a lot but I hope someone can help me out, this site is THE best for learning natural remedies!! I love reading the posts from all over the word. Thank you so much in advance for your help.

Happy New Year to everyone and thank you Earth Clinic!!

Oil Pulling
Posted by Timh (Louisville, Usa) on 12/12/2011 2041 posts

Holly, I would stay with the pulling because the side effects are evidence that you have some type of toxin or heavy metal in your body (that needs to be out). All toxins in general are damaging to lipids, sugars, and amino acids; and as such, can have notable side effects like depression.

Also, I have had to up my oral care since O. P. because of the heavy toxin loads (no depression on my part). otc mouth wash, colloidal silver, H2O2 are mandatory for infection prevention. Also consider other types of oil ( I use Canola or Canola blend), and if you foam up quickly, reduce your pull time to 15 or 10 min.

You may need to use some charcoal or bentonite to help remove the toxins. Tyrosine, St JohnsWort, and 5-HTP will help with the depression. NAC will boost glutathione which you seem to be insufficient. Any form of magnesium will help (i use Epsom salt foot bath daily). Vit-C is also critical in detox (i use 500mg before and 500mg after O. P. to lesson my symptoms).

If your negative symptoms get overwhelming, take a few days off O. P. Try a 2 dys on 2 days off until your negative side effects disappear (depending on how toxic your body is).

Hope this helps and good luck.

It's been awhile since Holly's post, but since people like myself use this site for relevant info I thought I'd add that depression and chemical sensitivities are both symptoms of candida (yeast) infections, and that cocunut oil can cause a die-off reaction as it kills the yeast.

A multi-year systemic yeast infection is what led me to this point. My symptoms got worse and worse as well as more and more (panic feelings, athlete's foot, jock itch, psoriasis, itching). Finally I tied together several of the symptoms through extensive research and came up with the idea of candida. But how to cure it? Everyone had an idea to sell me something, but I've been living overseas and have no access to these 'cures. ' Until I came across caproil as a possibility, and then learned that caproil is just a marketable part of coconut oil!

Since then I've been slowly adding more oil to my diet, stopping now and then when my die-off reaction became too much, and then getting back at it (insomnia, crawling/itchy skin, what felt like electrical reactions throughout my body, etc... ) I'm still only at 1 tablespoon a day, but I already feel so much better. All of my symptoms are gone or almost gone. And since I have learned of coconut oil's extensive benefits, I know its a superfood I will always be taking. I just wish somebody had told me about it earlier. It seems if there is no profit in it, we are all left to fend for ourselves. Good luck all!

Something that worked for warts for us, is get a piece of sandpaper and sand off the top layer off the wart so that it's opened. Then put straight oil of oregano on it. Cover with a band-aid. We buy the stuff from Greece. (Zane H.) I like to buy that because it has a high potency and then I add olive oil with it to take for other uses. Anyway, I put the oil of oregano directly on my son's 2 warts. He had one on his finger and one above his lip. The oil of oregano turned his skin red around the wary the first time so after that I put castrol oil around the warts and then applied the oil of oregano. I did this for about 3 days. Then the warts just feel off at some point. He never noticed when. You can probably use any brand of oil of oregano. If you get a pill, just cut it open and squeeze right onto the wart (after protecting the surrounding skin, but be careful not to get anything on the wart. You just want oil of oregano on the wart.)

It might take longer for your wart but just keep applying the oil of oregano and it will come off. The key is to open the wart so the oil of oregano can get inside to kill the bacteria.

I use this site all the time but have never posted before. Today, however, I'm dying to share! I've been adding 2tbs of coconut oil to my diet for the past month in various ways and I've experimented with using it in smoothies but it always clumps up when you add cold ingredients. Today however, I managed to make a 100% smooth no clump smoothie! I put coconut oil in a cup and placed it in a bowl of hot water to melt it and then smushed my fruit (just strawberries today) into the oil and added it to the food processor. Processed until completely smooth and THEN added my cold ingredients ( vanilla bean coconut milk ice cream and 1 crushed up ice cube for extra coldness. ) Result was as smooth as yogurt and delicious! Coconut oil has really been a cure all for me. I've lost a little weight even though my fat intake is obviously higher since I haven't changed anything else in my diet, my nails are stronger and look more clear, and the stubborn cystic acne I get around my jawline have all flattened out. The redness is still there, but with makeup on you can't even tell and no new zits have popped up and my skin looks better now than it has since I started getting cystic acne about 4 years ago. Finally being able to use evco in smoothies is just gonna make it better!

Meningitis, Encephalitis

Thirty four HIV/AIDS patients suffering from fungal meningitis and encephalitis treated from October 2007 to December 2008 were analysed. The only objective sign observed in all the patients was oropharyngeal candidiasis (thrush); it is thus the pathognomonic sign in fungal meningitis and encephalitis in HIV/AIDS patients.

Oropharyngeal candidiasis in an HIV/AIDS patient should indicate the risk of developing fungal meningitis and encephalitis. Memory loss was also one of most declared symptoms. The diagnosis of fungal meningitis was presumptive; only one was positive for Cryptococcus neoformans. The early diagnosis and treatment of fungal meningitis and encephalitis in HIV/AIDS patients with mfonfu oil (coconut oil) should be based on clinical approach by the presence of neurological and mental disorders, and oropharyngeal candidiasis. The recovery rate within the first two weeks of treatment with mfonfu oil (coconut oil) was 91.2% while the fatality rate was 8.8%.

This operational research confirms the effectiveness of mfonfu oil (coconut oil) in the treatment of fungal meningitis and encephalitis in HIV/AIDS patients. Mfonfu oil (coconut oil) would be used sooner or later to treat fungal meningitis and encephalitis in HIV/AIDS patients; it is effective, available, and cheap; and it is a revolutionary discovery for humanity!

Nevertheless educational campaigns for the prevention HIV infection are still paramount because there is not yet any specific medication against HIV.

The use of coconut oil (mfonfu oil) for the early treatment of fungal meningitis and encephalitis, supplementing ARV therapy, will greatly prolong the lives of HIV/AIDS patients.
All efforts contributing positively to the fight against HIV/AIDS from the top to the bottom and from the bottom to the top of the health pyramid such as this discovery should be highly considered and appreciated.

Yes, that's normal. It feels nasty though, but it goes away after a few minutes or when you drink something. I don't know why it makes you get that scratchy feeling in your throat like that, but what I had really hard time with, was when I first started taking teaspoon or tablespoons in it in the morning, I'd get quesy for a good 30-45 minutes and have to lie down. It's been a couple years and I take it every morning and that feeling has gone away somewhat but I still get it sometimes. Coconut oil will make you nauseated especially in larger amounts. That's why it helps to eat with it.
