Total darkness allows the iris of the eye to completely relax. Eyes are the only place your nervous system is exposed to the world directly. If you are resting in a partially darkened room, cup your palms over your eyes for a while until it seems totally black. Remove your palms and keep your eyes closed. You will perceive some light or lessening of the black through your eyelids. Closing your eyes to sleep, in any illumination, does not allow complete relaxation. Always use a sleep mask or soft cap pulled over your eyes, doubled if needed, and test with palms over mask to be absolutely sure of total darkness.
Sleep Pointing North in Absolute Darkness
Sleeping with your head pointing North can improve the quality of your sleep. Also sleeping in absolute total darkness(no alarm clock lights, no light from the door jam) can have a huge impact on your over all health. It will allow more melatonin release by your body and for a longer period of time during the night, which is vital to living longer and healthier. This kind of sleep quality lifts your levels of attention, energy and motivation, awareness and helps keeping aging down to a minimum.
I use mango,coconut water, banana, and sweet potato for sleep, and it really works!
I read that these ingredients help with insomnia, which is typical for me now, and decided to try them, and they're great!
I make a smoothie with mango, banana, and coconut water right before bed. I usually eat more banana then and also eat some previously còoked sweet potato then too. Any kind of sweet potato works, but the purple colored ones work even better than the orange coloured ones, which are just fine. It's even better when I add GABA and tryptophan powder, but it's mostly the regular smoothly that does the work.
Ps the book says if you eat greens of some kind with the mango, it KEEPS you awake instead. I wonder if that means at dinner too.
My daughter and I each got a wristwatch/step tracker and are having a fun time of it. She has a friend she is comparing steps with. I got one because I thought it would motivate me to stay active on a regular basis. We did not get the expensive ones. They were about $25 each. Not only did I not want to spend a lot on one, a friend who was wearing a smart watch was having some weird symptoms that she attributed to her smart watch.
My watch can be paired to my phone to record data, which I do daily.
Honestly, I am not sure the steps are accurate. I did get to 10,000 steps in on Saturday which was supposedly over 4 miles in the day but I am not convinced I walked that much. 80% of it was just stuff I normally do around the house on Saturday (cooking, cleaning, gardening.) But, I do think it is comparatively accurate, so for my purpose of motivation to keep moving, it is effective.
I was especially fascinated by the fact that it can track sleep.
I feel like I am a light sleeper and often worry that I am not getting quite enough sleep. 5-6 hours a night seems typical for me.
I have tracked several nights and it appears that I am getting better sleep than I thought. I am getting plenty of deep sleep. Apparently, in the light sleep cycles one can be somewhat aware of what is happening around. I often feel like I am "sleeping with one eye opened, " but I am apparently getting rest. In fact, more than I might have guessed. One morning data was that I got 6 hours and 20 minutes of sleep, which was 45 minutes more than I was guessing I got.
My point is, if you suffer with insomnia, a sleep tracker may encourage you that you get more sleep than you think, or confirm how little sleep you are getting!
My husband snores and I have been concerned about sleep apnea for him. He has a bad family heart history and sleep apnea is hard on the heart! I had him wear my watch and he registered 8 hours of sleep with a good balance of deep and light sleep!
Obviously this is a very low tech way to evaluate sleep, and not appropriate for someone with significant sleep issues. But for the curious it gives some interesting data.
My watch also gives my heart rate. I thought it was reading too low, but when I compared it to the reading on a pulse oxygen meter I have on hand it appears to be pretty close.
So that is my two cents on a fitness tracker watch!

I often have trouble falling asleep, recently I found out about the the "4-7-8" breathing trick, and it seems to work for me.
"You breathe in through your nose for four seconds, hold it for seven seconds, and exhale through your mouth for eight seconds. She explained to me that it slows down your heart rate and it also releases chemicals in our brains that soothe you".

I have chronic insomnia. None of the supplements/herbs I have tried do anything for it. Some do help me to sleep but then I have diarrhea from them. Does anyone have experience with clay? I hear it goes to the place in most need of healing first--do you think it would go to whatever is wrong and then I'd be able to sleep? I took 1 dose of sodium bentonite clay and had muscle aches, headache, belly cramping. Now I hear that the calcium bentonite would be a better option. Anyone?
This question is for Ted. Dear Ted, I am writing to you abou my insomnia that I have for many years. I have been taking the sodium bicarbonate 1/2 tsp and potassium bicarbonate 1/4 tsp with a glass of water before bed for a few days. Unfortunately this hasn't worked. I only sleep for an hour at night and wake up more tired than when I went to bed. I am exhausted but my brain doesn't know that it needs to sleep. The sleep doen't come. I don't know what I am doing wrong, I don't nap, unable to, don't drink coffee or tea, only water. This is a nightmare. I am seeing a naturopath for a year and I am not getting any better. i just found the videos on youtube that use sound waves or vibrations very helpful with sleep problems or trouble relaxing and very helpful in other areas such as boosting self esteem, boosting serotonin levels and self confidence. I have a British Facebook friend who lives in the Carribean. I was telling her I have a lot of trouble going to sleep at night, and I wake up completely exhausted, this friend told me they use Soursop tea, and this will make me very sleepy. I looked up the Net about it, and this Soursop seems to be quite a remarkable tree, the fruits are used to eat with icecream etc, the leaves are for making Soursop tea.
This Soursop sounds quite an amazing tree. I was wondering if any of your readers can tell me more about it, and if it can be bought in USA, I would definitely want to know the soarce of where the Soursop came from too. I read where Amazon sell the dried tea cost around $7.. But some woman had left a review of her disappointment not on what the product can do for our health, but she said of the way it was packed etc, I mean, how would we know it was the real thing. When I want hell to relax & get sleepy at bedtime, I've found that eating Sunflower seeds soon helps me relax & start yawning! (For extra help, I add a Banana.)
When I've eaten foods high in Phosphorus it creates an imbalance, & I wind up getting painful leg cramps, usually at night. When I eat either Sunflower seeds (or Almonds) that same day, I never get those cramps!
I finally found a formula that helps my insomnia and now have a pain--does anyone think this is from the stuff I take or could it be something else? I take 1 Seriphos (1000mg), 200 mg L-Theanine, 1000 mg Glycine, 1000 mg Taurine, 1000 mg Gaba and 500 mg niacinamide. This mix also calls for 1 mg extended release melatonin, which made me fall asleep faster but left me with a migraine all day after. Without the melatonin I fall asleep within an hour, wake up several times but go right back to sleep and have strange dreams.
Now, after a week of doing this at night, I have a pain in my back (slightly lower than kidney) that radiates over to my hip and on to my groin. Almost like a kidney stone? Never had one, so no idea what causes this. It aches during the day unless I'm moving and is what I notice most when trying to go to sleep. Any ideas what it could be? Almost like a pulled muscle, except I haven't done anything to pull a muscle.
...Just to share, my fight for sleep for over 50 years has been hard, and I even thought I like the night and hated the morning. I realize now, it's because the world stopped bugging me at night, after I'd spent all day trying to please them in an exhausted state. Yet, once I finally did fall asleep at night (well, 2-4 am..), I had felt like I'd been in a doctors waiting room for hours.
I tried everything conventional, yada, yada, yada...and ended up needing to recover from side affects from treatments that weren't working..so-o..I decided to pray hard, to be lead to things I'd never heard of--to things I'd never find any other way.
That day I came across four subjects of matter in a row, and ordered the supplements that were suggested. My depression is lightning a lot, I am now sleeping while liking morning(!) unless I run out of any one of the four (unfortunately this has happened for three weeks at a time, 6 six times this year because of lack of stock or whatever..)
Seems my hormones were severely whacked out since the age of 3 even!..especially the hypothalamus, and this can happen for a number of reasons like emotional trauma, and things like thinking you can play with mercury and chew on lead fishing sinkers when you're little...
Now before these supplements, of course, I started on some excellent things that got the health ball rolling: 2000 mg of coral calcium div into 3xs/day with 400 mg of magnesium citrate--div the same way..need VitD & an acid and a protein to make them absorb-able.
The other thing I was doing was taking a mg of melatonin which only worked between the optimal hours of 10pm and 2am--or you lose your night-recovery benefits causing you to need more hours per day. The other two main thing I was doing was using hgh, cloned, not a precursor (one company only, makes it here), and then the almighty stem cell-producing glyco-nutrients.
I assumed that was more than plenty (incidentally I was on a thyroid prescription for hypothyroidism after a 3-week binge on new & "raved about" artificial sweetener 12 years ago(!).
But, like a fine car, lots of great parts aren't enough if you're still missing something important. So now for the four things I added (on top of basic good green nutrition..) raw muti-glandular supplement real gland substance--yes, it was hard to find, so if you'll allow me to at least mention that it comes in a label the color of a--fire engine..(!)..?
This is the most complete combo I have found and there doesn't seem to be a competitor straight across the board--also, this is essential a dried 'food'-type animal-based dietary thing. The second is the same food-type thing: hypothalamus glandular--the actual substance..these can come in either bovine, porcine or lamb..some people do not like porcine.
The third thing surprised me: gaba...which turns off serotonin and turns on melatonin..this is found in everyone hypothalamus in abundance. And the fourth category was extra glandular of natural thyroid and pituitary tissue.
I hasten to add 5HTP is a nice cherry on top but isn't always necessary now, and royal jelly is the same way...but that is incredible stuff when you read about it..apparently, the queen eats it and lives about 6 yrs while the worker bees eat honey and live 6 weeks. If the diet is reversed, the workers live 6 years and the queen lives six weeks..just goes to show...
I take bvits w/ subliminal B12, too, because I had a terrible nervous breakdown and a B-deficiency was the straw that broke the camel's back.
Having learned about glyco-nutrients, I learned that volatile spices, herbs, gums, fibers and fungi like mushrooms all have them in and are stem cell-producing--literally from 0 to trillions in one WEEK in tested blood work, and that lets us fight off our own cancer, which did have.
Two other things that help sleep, are apple cider vinegar (my acid reflux stopped dead in it's tracks..hmm, mysterious..--yOu live with your own stomach so leave the 'cure' word to that certain gov organization to play with..I can only say we, in my household, have been off of acid reducers for three years now...and we were bad off...
My doctor in Maryland said this, that the sphincter will Not close until it detects enough acid...and low and behold, she hands me a prescription of stomach acid to take!!--but the vinegar did enough even that left me symptom-free too (vinegar was cheaper)..I sleep through the night without acid coming up now, you be the judge.
Wonder if you might have a better night? ..you see, a lack of sufficient stomach acid cause lack of nutrient absorption, and there you go...who can sleep with that going on.
I have learned that my all-'caring' government--bless their little hearts--can't really own the word 'cure', it's mine...but, I'll play along, the law is very important.
So are our own rights to personal boundary protection.
The truth is, abuse is perpetuated by the victim, no one can hurt us who isn't allowed to first, so we must ask ourselves, are we willing to allow the self-abuse that precipitates being taken advantage of by others?
When take responsibility for ourselves, what others are able to do to us becomes limited even tho they have a temper tantrum.
Right now my 'other' dr. wants me on cholesterol medicine, so I put myself on something better and faster. I will no longer take pressure from those who say they won't treat me unless I do it all their way. That's power abuse. We need to nurture ourselves.
I suffer from occasional insomnia and find this is a sure-fire cure:
1000mg L-Tyrosine (capsule form)
3-9mg Melatonin (sub-lingual tablets best)
500-1500mg Vitamin C (chewable best)
For me, this works best if taken as soon as you realise it's going to be one of those nights. I take it with a glass of water, and a slice or two of bread. Ideally, try this when you'll be able to devote 6-8hr to sleep--after that I always wake up 100% refreshed. Best of luck!
I have genetic chronic insomnia. My max sleep time is 2 hrs. On rare occasion 4 hrs. I have tried pretty much everything on this site. Nothing seems to work for a long deep sleep. BTW: even the strongest sleeping pills don't keep me down past 4 hrs and leave me very groggy, so I avoid them.
I have been searching the net and came across GABA & a product called Great Nights Sleep 2.Has anyone had any experience with either of these products? Please advise. I'm so burnt out and desperate and I don't want to spend any more monies on things that don't work. Thank You.
