Cold Shower Therapy

I woke up early this morning and went right into one of the worst panic attacks of my life. Nausea, dizziness, heart rate going at about twice what it normally does... I found this site after looking for quick ways to lower my hart rate because I was having trouble breathing. I decided to give the cold shower treatment a try and, while I regretted it for the first five minutes or so, I am now feeling totally back to normal. I'll be sure to use this method in the future as it works so much faster than any medication I have tried.

Magnesium, Salt, Potassium

My heart palpitations woke me up at night. It felt like being on a very long, steep roller coaster ride. Tests revealed nothing. My cardiologist recommended magnesium, Himalayan salt and a banana daily. Stopped in 3 days.

Palpitations in my view can be caused by:

1. Silent acid reflux. Many chiropractors know how to lower your esophagus!

2. Thyroid

'3. IBS

4.adrenals

5. Iodine, magnesium b vitamin, iron, b12 deficiencies

I have noticed a connection between sugar intake on an empty stomach and heart palpitations.

If I reach for a sugary snack to hold me over until meal time I am getting heart palpitations.

I think a piece of cheese or handful of nuts would be better and will try that soon.

I have been fighting skips for 4 decades, , , Magnesium powder eliminates them, however I have compromised kidneys and the amount I need to take gives me diarrhea which drains my electrolytes and make everything worse. What a dilemma. Dehydration makes everything much worse and few people take in enough water. Medical doctors know very little about my problem and it seems like we could use a real pro to help our plight. Oh to have Ted from Bangkok back again

Another thing that helps heart palpitations is taurine.... Especially if you are sensitive to Msg and accidentally ingested some. Taurine is an amino acid that really helps get msg out of your system. Just something to look in to. It is an inexpensive supplement. I always keep it on hand for racing, fluttering heart. Good luck!

My friend had severe heart palpatations that had me driving him to the hostpital one time after he had sat there for 8 hours with an irregular heart beat! The hospital did what they knew to do but nothing worked for him and gave no really useful advice.

For another issue he started taking magnesium and a little zinc. He didn't really notice that he hadn't had a heart palpatation until one day he forgot to take the magnesium. His heart went irregular by about 2pm. He started to get worried.

He remembered he hadn't had his magnesium tablet and within a few minites of taking it the palpatations had completely stopped!

Reading other posts, I wonder if that's why molasses has worked for some people as it has a good supply of magnesium?

Kristi from PA,,, I had palpitations back when I was doing the keto diet. I had read on EC about the many benefits of organic unsulphered black strap molasses and started taking 1 tablespoon each morning. After a week or so it occurred to me that my palpitations had completely stopped! I was very surprised because that wasn't why I started the molasses! Good luck, I know how unnerving it can be!

It could be anything not just magnesium deficiency. What else you're taking in terms of prescription medication and supplements? See if it could possibly cause palpitations. If nothing, I'd start with an appointment with an acupuncturist and a homeopath. Some acupuncturists are trained in homeopathy as well. Trust me, I have POTS for 12 years and end up in a hospital at least twice a year with all kinds of heart “ acrobatics”. They just observe me. So if you have tried magnesium and other remedies and it's not helping and your electrolytes, glucose are normal time to see alternative modalities professionals. Also, try, if you can find these 2 homeopathic remedies. I could only find Cactus Grandiflorus in a tincture form, which I'm going to try, but perhaps homeopaths do have it or know where to find it.

Naja Tripudians

  • Common Name: Venom of the cobra
  • Symptoms: The remedy suits individuals who are sad, depressed and have suicidal thoughts along with chest pain.
  • Following symptoms are peculiar to this remedy. They help to distinguish from other remedies depending on the symptoms of the individual.
  • Pain and heaviness in the heart region
  • A Sensation of weight in chest near the heart region.
  • Chest pains radiate to the nape of neck and left shoulder.
  • Excessive fear of death with anxiety.
  • Along with chest pain and heart-related symptoms, there is pain in forehead and temples.
  • Rapid heartbeats.
  • Pain as if some stitches have been made in the chest region.
  • Difficulty in breathing.
  • Fear of being alone is constant. Fear of rain is also marked.
  • The person feels better in open air.

Cactus Grandiflorus

  • Common Name: Night blooming cereus
  • Symptoms: Following symptoms indicate the need for this remedy.
  • Breathlessness along with a constant feeling of weight on chest.
  • Feeling of constriction in chest which makes breathing difficult.
  • Swelling of diaphragm (a layer of muscle separating the chest from abdomen)
  • Rapid heartbeats with pain moving towards the left arm.
  • Consistent sensation as if an iron band is tied around chest.
  • Cold sweat and anxiety.
  • Low blood pressure
  • Pulse is weak and feeble.

Hi Kristi,

Thank you for the reminder, I remember it now and your glowing report! I'm glad you found your answer for insomnia because many people never do.

I just realized, looking at your list of supplements that you don't have potassium on there. I was too busy looking at your list in terms of which supplements had the potential to cause palpitations, so I wasn't really looking at it in terms of what might be missing that could help alleviate palpitations.

The hard part about supplementing potassium is that it is only available in 99 mg capsules or tablets whereas 1600 - 2000 mg/day is thought to be adequate, but I doubt that that is an optimal dose for adults who may be hypokalemic and some people go substantially higher, but you can see that if you are low, you're going to have to swallow a bunch of those 99 mg pills everyday. There isn't an established RDA for potassium and that seems to add to the problem. The following Healthline article says that getting 3500 mg to 4700 mg/day of potassium from various foods is possible and healthful :

https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/how-much-potassium-per-day

Here is a relevant article quote :

' Potassium is an essential mineral for health. Getting between 3, 500 milligrams and 4, 700 milligrams a day from tomatoes, spinach, sweet potatoes, and other fruits and vegetables may lower your risk of kidney stones, stroke, and high blood pressure. '

Here is an article discussing the relationship of potassium and palpitations :

https://ufhealth.org/conditions-and-treatments/low-blood-potassium#:~:text=Symptoms, skipped heart beats or palpitations

Interestingly, the following article suggests that low potassium (hypokalemia) can cause the following symptoms :

' Hypokalemia may mimic neurovegetative symptoms, such as weakness, lethargy, apathy, fatigue, and depressed mood (2). Additionally, hypokalemia can mimic anxiety reactions, such as headache, irritability, nervousness, paresthesias, visual disturbances, and muscle discomfort (3). '

These symptoms seem similar to some SAD symptoms.

Here is a link to that article :

https://psychiatryonline.org/doi/10.1176/appi.ajp-rj.2016.111103#:~:text=Hypokalemia may mimic neurovegetative symptoms, and muscle discomfort (3).

Further, blackstrap molasses contains a significant amount of potassium. You didn't say how much you are taking so I don't know exactly how much potassium the BSM is delivering, but it has fairly high content as foods go.

Have you had your potassium level checked recently??? If not, perhaps you might consider it.

One way that people avoid having to take a bunch of potassium pills is by buying potassium in bulk powder and then mixing their dose of potassium powder in orange juice and drinking it. If you try and reach those dosing levels with pills, that's 35 to 47 pills a day! Most people are not getting anywhere near these levels everyday.

There are quite a few things that can cause low potassium.

Good luck and keep us updated on your progress!

General Feedback

Wow.....

Firstly, what kind of thyroid tests have you had done? TSH, Free T3, Free T4, Total T3, Total T4 etc. It sounds to me like either a pituitary, thyroid, or adrenal issue. All three of these endocrine organs are homeostatic regulators. They are like your bodies control boxes. All three of them can effect your heart in some way or another. The Free T3 and Free T4 with the TSH are more "accurate" blood tests. If your doctors did the Total T3 and Total T4 they are pretty useless. If you are hyper then just TSH will tell you nothing. Even in hypo situations TSH is pretty useless. TSH or Thyroid Stimulating Hormone does exactly what it says. Your Pituitary sends out TSH when its messenger hormones tell it your T3 and T4 are too low.

Adrenal issues are the same. Most doctors wont even test for them and if they did they wouldn't do the right tests. One way to find out by yourself if it is a possible adrenal issue is to go in a dark room with a flash light and a mirror. Leave the flash light off for about 10 seconds than look into the mirror while shining the light towards your eyes ( not directly at them). If your pupils dilate like they should then your adrenals are telling them to do what they are supposed to. If on the other hand your pupils fluctuate between dilation and open at all or stay wide open then you can be pretty sure your adrenal glands are ill. Another easy test is to sit down and take your blood pressure. Immediately after then take it again while standing. If it drops then your adrenals are probably ill. It should go up if your adrenals are fine.

Pituitary issues are much less common than adrenal and thyroid issues but still possible. Your pituitary can affect so many organs including your adrenals and thyroid that it can be a big problem if it's out of whack.

My other thought is that it can be an electolyte problem that was possibly started by your supplements or maybe by your adrenal glands or kidneys. If your adrenals are ill then your aldosterone level may be low. Aldosterone signals the kidneys to excrete potassium. If serum potassium gets too high then your heart will most definitely be affected. If your kidneys are not excreting the potassium due to being ill then you will get the same situation with your heart. You probably don't need supplemental potassium. If you want to make sure your getting enough then drink an isotonic drink (sodium/potassium/calcium/magnesium) to make sure your taking in the correct balance of electrolytes. Coconut water (some people hate the taste) is isotonic which means it has the same electrolyte balance as your blood. I drink at least two of them a day and honestly feel terrible if I don't so I am an addict now:)

Hi, I had the same problem in January 2016. I had quiet a bit of stress and I loaded my stomach the night before with a bowl of sauerkraut and a full dinner. I woke up in the morning, ate breakfast and worried about a few things, and then bent forward to pick something up from the floor, and it started. At that time I fainted. I think it was because I called the ambulance and they told me to walk to a nearby clinic as it would be faster to get help. My pulse then was extremely fast and I felt flutter in my chest. When I got to the clinic with an already fast pulse I realized that, I had to climb up stairs to the second floor. When I got upstairs I fainted. Then they did ECG and it was a little abnormal. They gave me propranolol and aspirin. When the paramedics came to take me to hospital and they tested me again in the ambulance, the ECG was normal. At the hospital it was also normal. And, all my tests came back normal. I think it was a crazy idea to exert myself and climb those stairs with an already fast pulse with palpitations. Sometimes, I also feel this flutter in my throat pit.

The first time I ever got this problem was 3 years ago, when I was on a 6 week fast with with no other food but non-starchy vegetable and fruit. It could have been an electrolyte imbalance. I called the ambulance and they told me to call again in half an hour as all the ambulances were on call :) The palpitation lasted almost 2 hours. It alternated with muscle twitches in my legs. I remembered about a folk treatment with a tsp of honey. I took it and it slowly abated within approx 20 minutes. I did not go to hospital at that time as it stopped after the honey.

I also have this indigestion problem with acid and sometimes food reflux, which could be contributing to my problem if not causing it. Homeopathic Arsenicum 3C, 3 drops twice daily is a great help for that.

One interesting thing for people with atrial regurgitation is to check for the presence of helicobacter pylori. It has been shown to be causing the episodes.

To stop my palpitations and fast pulse episodes, I take homeopathic Crataegus tincture 10 drops on tongue twice daily and Lachesis mutrus 200,4 pills on alternate morning and Coffea cruda 200 SOS for stress. Then when the scary palpitations happen I just take the Crataegus 10 drops and repeat if necessary after 15 minutes, I also take a tsp of honey, and it seems to work. The next episodes if they happen are shorter and milder.

I also noticed that if I drink a lot of water and I pass water too often then the episodes may recur. So, I drink a glass of tomato juice 100% to replace the potassium and I'm safe. Sometimes, I drik two glasses daily or eat beans with tomato paste concentrate. In 100g of tomato concentrate there is approx 1000 mg of potassium. I also eat dried peaches, figs, green beets etc. What is also good for the heart is to eat regularly pumpkin seeds which contain a lot of magnesium. Replacing table salt with Himalayan or Celtic salt is also a good idea as well as drinking up to 10 glasses of water daily.

Magnesium, Eating Less

A palpitation is an abnormality of heartbeat that causes a conscious awareness of its beating, whether it is too slow, too fast, irregular, or missing in between at its normal frequency. I have been a heart patient for the last ten years and I felt worst from my palpitation.

Every fifth beat of my heart went missing and I felt a noisy gear like sound in my heart. The feeling was anxiety but no pain. I went to ER, blood analysis and ECG were perfect except my Magnesium was a bit low. Doctor attending me gave me a sip of Magnesium solution. I came back home hale and hearty.

The next day, I again noticed the palpitation, this time 15th beat was missing. I went to gym and did my regular yoga, cardio and light weight exercise. The palpitation was gone. Mind you I had not exercised due to flue like symptoms earlier. Since then, I keep Magnesium level to normal, keep exercising and eating less than what I use to eat earlier. I am better and have not felt palpitation yet.

I think controlling the amount and quality of food is key to solve the problem. Always eat and fill 1/3 rd of your stomach. Keep 1/3rd for water and 1/3rd should remain empty. You will live for a long time.

I love this post by Louis from Cali, Columbia! I've been having a couple of skipped heart beats per minute since I did something that brought on arrhythmia a few days ago. I'm not sure what I did but luckily it calmed down except for the two skipped beats per minute. Anyway, I found an indentation between my wrist and the base of my right thumb. This is easy for me to find because of my age, ha, ha, I'm getting those bony hands. But, if you go down your thumb heading for your wrist you will come to a kind of knob just before your wrist. Then, on your right hand, immediately after the knob there's a kind of indentation, then another knob that is part of the wrist. That indentation is what Cali was talking about, and if you move in it slightly to the right you will see it's a bit bigger. I just put pressure in that larger indentation, and my heart is now beating without skipping any beats! Interestingly, when I first put pressure there, I could feel a pulse. But, now I can't. I tried my left thumb/wrist and again I felt a pulse at first, but after I let up on the pressure then pushed down again, I could no longer feel a pulse. You know, this reminds me of my friend Javier from Panama telling me I don't need strong pain pills after having a tooth pulled, just Coka Cola! He said, just let it sit on the area that hurts for awhile and the pain will be much less. Well, I gave it a try when I had to have a tooth pulled and lo!, it worked!! :-)

Vijay, must tell you that my mom at 85 yrs had a stroke & was "gone" by the time I got her out of the bathroom & into the bed. Had to really hurry & find cayenne powder which I mixed with a few drips of water then swabbed her tongue & mouth heavily inside with it. Next, Ran into the pantry, found my habinaro oil & proceeded to swab her tongue & inside of her mouth with it also.( it was much more hot!)The doseage was approx. a tsp of cayenne powder & enough water to make a quick paste. for the habinaro oil I put about a 1/4 tsp all around in her mouth. Then, her eyes opened! She was back- no brain damage observed then or now. She didn't feel the heat of the hot oils or remember them at all. It works & it's immediate.

if you have not already, replace all your drinks with water, for about a week and see the difference. instead of coffee or tea have a hot cup of water. Water. water, water. When someone ask what you want to drink say "Water please". No caffeine at all. it made a big difference for me after only two days. just water and food and that little change can make a big difference.

You may get a withdrawal headache, but each day it should be lighter.

Dear Sintia,

I am not Ted, but I don't think he is able to answer posts right now. I have a few thoughts I thought I would share. Heart Palpitations are scary.

If you haven't already, please read people's stories on the Heart Palpitations page:

https://www.earthclinic.com/cures/heart_palpitations.html

Sometimes something very simple helps.

Caffeine and MSG are very common triggers. MSG is hidden in so many things - you need to look up "Hidden Sources of MSG" to be able to avoid it.

Blackstrap Molasses has helped people with palpitations and other arrythmias. You can take 1 Tablespoon morning and evening. I think the magnesium in it is what helps. Some people just use magnesium supplements.

Cayenne Pepper, Hawthorne Berry Powder, and Ginger are all excellent herbs for the heart. If my husband has some caffeine and then his heart starts acting up, he takes these herbs and it helps. You can take them daily.

It is encouraging that the doctors have not found a problem, but frustrating not to have a solution yet. I hope you find relief soon. Please be sure to let us know what works for you.

Hi Kristi,

A quick look at your list and I think these have the potential to potentially cause palpitations in some people :

1. L Tyrosine

2. Fish Oil

3. L Theanine

4. Possibly the Mucuna

5. You didn't say how long since you stopped vitamin D3, but if it has been months low vitamin D3 can affect electrolytes so an indirect possibility.

6. NAC

Hi Kristi,

I'm glad you were able to improve the insomnia situation! What did you use for the insomnia, I can't remember the post.

The following study suggests that aside from melatonin's beneficial heart effects it may also help with arrythmia. Not quite the same as palpitations, but in the same area of heart health :

https://www.hindawi.com/journals/omcl/2021/8876792/

Here is a relevant study quote :

' Despite the knowledge on repairing mechanisms in the cardiovascular system, effective antiaging strategies able to reduce the risk of arrhythmias are still missing. Melatonin is a promising therapeutic candidate due to its pleiotropic actions. This indoleamine regulates chronobiology and endocrine physiology. Of relevance, melatonin is an antiaging, antioxidant, antiapoptotic, antiarrhythmic, immunomodulatory, and antiproliferative molecule. This review focuses on the protective effects of melatonin on age-induced cardiac functional and structural alterations, potentially becoming a new fountain of youth for the heart. '

I think the melatonin lotion I wrote about, would be an easy way to get enough and be good for your skin wherever you apply it.

Btw, several of the other supplements you are taking are noted for helping palpitations, but apparently not in your case. Keep us posted on what you find out.

There is a reason potassium supplements are sold at 99mg per tablet. One should never supplements it regularly, let alone more than 99mg pill, but get it from food. Bananas, passion fruit, beets, moringa, etc..

Potassium in blood is tested as a part of electrolytes testing. If one has low potassium he would definitely feel very bad and it is usually addressed in ER, not by increasing potassium supplementation, for it could be extremely dangerous.

There is a reason why potassium is low, finding the reason before attempting manipulate with it is very important.

Please look at my submission under Tachycardia, titled Motherworth and Hawthorn, to get my remedy for heart palpitations. This is fast heartbeat, a sudden rise to 150 beats per minute or more, even to the 200 beats per minute range. The remedy I found and have tested over years is very fast for me, and very reliable. My submission under Tachycardia, titled Motherwort and Hawthorn, gives details. I think the medical community should know about this but I think the pharmaceutical industry would find a way to make money off a chemical variation. The herbs themselves do a remarkable job.
