IN 1985 I HAVE MY FIRST PALPITATIONS. I WENT TO THE EMERCENCY ROOM AND THE DOCTOR KIND OF BRUSHED IT OFF AND THAT WAS THAT, IT WENT AWAY. IN 1986 WHILE DRIVING MY CAR IT HAPPENED AGAIN AT WHICH TIME I TOOK MY CIGARETTES AND TOSSED THEM OUT THE WINDOW DONE FOREVER. THE PALPITAIONS CAME ON AT CERTAIN TIMES THEN WENT AWAY AND I THOUGHT LITTLE OF THEM. IN 1995 THEY GOT WORSE AND I HAD A MONITOR PLACED ON ME AND THE DOCTOR WAS NO HELP.IN 1996 I GOT THEM REAL BAD AND WENT TO THE HOSPITAL AND BECAUSE I HAD INSURANCE I WAS HOSPITALIZED WITH WIRES GOING TO THE NURSE STATION. I WAS RELEASED BUT WITH NO INFORMATION OTHER THAN SOME DANGEROUS MEDICATION WHICH I LATER FOUND OUT WAS VERY BAD. I HAVE SINCE FOUND THERE IS LITTLE THAT THE MODERN MEDICAL INDUSTY CAN DO OTHER THAN TAKE YOUR MONEY AND FEED YOU DANGEROUS DRUGS.AFTER A COUPLE MORE TIMES IN THE HOSPITAL AND ALMOST HAVING A STROKE TWICE I HAVE REALIZED I AM THE MASTER OF MY BODY AND NEED TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS BECAUSE THE MDS ARE CLUELESS. MY CONDITION NOW IS CHRONIC I HAVE PALPITAIONS ALL DAY EVERY DAY. I TAKE ACV,MASSES OF VITAMINS AND MINERALS,WAS TOLD THE ADRENALS CAN HAVE AN AFFECT SO I AM WORKING ON THE ADRENALS. MY NEXT STEP IS JUICE FASTING WITH MINERAL AND VITAMIN SUPPLEMENTS AS WELL AS A COLON CLEANSE, A LIVER CLEANSE, AND A KIDNEY CLEANSE. I SUSPECT THE ADRENAL CONNECTION, I ALSO SUSPECT POSSIBLY A PARASITE OR CANDIDA CONNECTION AND OVER ACID BODY.I AM GOING ON A TOTAL RAW FOOD DIET AND ELIMINATING EVERY THING CAN POSSIBLE BE A SOURCE OF THE PALPITATIONS. ALL THESE THINGS I AM WORKING ON IN AN ATTEMPT TO CORRECT THIS PROBLEM. TOO BAD OUR SO CALLED MEDICAL INDUSTRY IS SO CLUELESS AND EXPENSIVE.IT SEEMS THAT THE MEDICAL INDUSTRY CAN BE INCOMPETENT AS WELL AS PROFITABLE. I DID A HAIR SAMPLE MINERAL TEST AND FOUND I WAS HIGH IN ALUMINUM CADMIUM, AND OTHER DANGEROUS METALS THAT MAY BE AFFECTING THE ABSORBSION OF GOOD MINERALS. I WAS LOW IN CALCIUM, MAGNESIUM AND OTHER MINERALS EVEN THOUGH I SUPPLEMENT WITH QUALITY MINERALS. I NOW ALSO DO THE CHELATION TO RID MY BODY OF THE BAD METALS. I AM WORKING HARD ON THIS AND AM DETERMINED TO ADDRESS THE TRUE SOURCE OF THE PROBLEM.

This is in reply to Ron B. I have had problems with heart palpitations in the past, and had very good success with Peppermint tea. The tea is also very good for digestion and possibly the palpitations are linked to faulty digestion. You mentioned also that you suspect an overly acid system might cause this. I suffer from this also, and take DeSouza's Liquid Chlorophyll which helps a lot. Chlorophyll is great for alkalizing the body. Any brand would probably work, but I notice other brands have added ingredients besides the chlorophyll that I would rather not take. I cannot take ACV because I become too acid from it. You mentioned also that you take a lot of supplements. I would go off of everything and just try the peppermint tea, at least 2 cups a day. Also, 1 tablespoon of the chlorophyll in an 8 oz. glass of water once a day. Also, an excellent remedy for nerves is liquid Celery Seed Extract. You can put 12 or more drops of this in the peppermint tea if you feel that nerves are also linked to the palpitations. I suggest going off of everything you are taking now while trying the peppermint tea, liquid chlorophyll and liquid celery seed extract. Something you are taking might be causing the palpitations to be worse. Once you feel better, you can always introduce the supplements back slowly. I hope this helps you, Ron.

One thing about heart palpitations that was mentioned in the definition in the begining is that they can come from anti-depressants. I was on anti-anxiety pills and was not told by my doctor that they were addictive. They said take up to this many a day as needed for anxiety. I took them for about a week on a regular basis, and the when I was feeling fine I didn't take them. I ended up calling an ambulance that night because I thought I was having a heart attack at the age of 27. So by the time I got to the hospital my paliptations had stopped and they just said to take my medicine as prescribed. I looked more information up about my medicine and realized that the withdrawal symptoms of any drug that has benzodiazapines in them is heart palpitations and other. Because I took these for only a week I was addicted and had to take several months to withdrawal off of it slowly so I would not go through the palpitations again. The website with the withdrawal chart was in a manual written by a UK woman doctor. It is on a UK website.
I talked with my doctor telling them I wanted off and told them the steps I was taking. They were ok with it and just said that if I had problems to call and they could help. They also suggested getting on something else after I was done withdrawing from this one. To finally get off I actually had to be put on a different anti-anxiety pill because I could not take the week where I had to come off all the way. These drugs are very scary to me, but may be needed by some. If you have palpitations though see if you are on this type of drug first to see if it could be the cause of this issue. Unfortunately I didn't try any herbal remedies because I had not thought of it yet. I love this website and plan on using it for many things.

Hi im only 16, my palpitations occured about a month ago. Before then I noticed my heart rate went up, but about a month ago I had a really bad attack and had to be rushed to the hospital. My mom said my heart reached 143 beats pr minute. They say it was over stress over a boy but I think its more then that. They ran a cat-scan and they didnt find anything. They said I should just try to relax and not let anything stress me out. Iv tried to relax and its helped some but I have major migrains, idk whats going on or what to do. My family doesnt take it too serious since they think its caused from stress. Could someone give me some advice as to what could be wrong?

Heart palps can be scary, can't they? I get them often, too, and they used to really scare me. Since they checked you out pretty well, I wouldn't worry that it is anything serious. The anxiety they cause can make them worse, so try to just let them pass and don't focus too much on them. Do you take magnesium? Sometimes this can help. Have you had your electrolytes checked? It could be that you have a deficiency in that area. At your age, it could be just your hormones as you get migraines.

When I was in my 20's I started having strange heart palpitations. I'm now in my 50's and was diagnosed with Superventricular Tackycardia. Don't know what your symptons are, but maybe if you google this it might help you. Good luck and hope you are feeling better real soon.

It could be magnesium and or potassium deficiency. As you get migraines have a look into magnesium. I started getting migraines as a small child and the Dr told my mum that I was putting it on as young children don't get them. Well he was wrong! About 10 years ago I worked out it was lack of magnesium that caused mine. I have not needed a hospital visit for at least 9 yrs nor have I been to the Drs for an injection or prescription for them. I too start to get palpitations (although very mild), a couple of years ago, and yes was under a little extra stress. Since starting to do some alkalizing and taking some potassium and magnesium have not had any more. Maybe you could have a look at EC's page:
https://www.earthclinic.com/cures/heart_palpitations.html#MRT_17816
You are the person who knows your body best, if you feel it is not stress causing it then keep looking until you find what works for you. We are often told stress causes this and that but maybe it is closer to the truth that it aggravates things or it could be that it causes your body to use up certain nutrients thus leaving you with symptoms from a lack of the same nutrients. All the best in finding your answer and keep searching and asking till you do.

Hi, a lil while back I was trying magnesium citrate which I had found in a lemon flavored powder at a gnc store. The first time I used it, it worked great for what I was using it for, the second time I used it that night I had heart palps got real light headed and it became difficult to breath. The symptoms stopped after but I was wondering why? A coworker of mine is a nurse and she had said that magnesium supplements can be hard on your heart if abused? But I had only taken the dosage it said a lil under in fact...

Hey there Faith from Pdx,
Yeah, the "smoking gun" theory nails a lot of medical issues that track back to infection by virus/fungus.
Folks rarely put together an infection (even though usually bad...like mono or strep) and a condition six months later. The underlying culprit is the virus or fungus or both...a co-infection.
That's why I'm such an advocate for colloidal silver... or anything that used consistently might kill the invader. I won't turn my nose up at MMS or Iodine or ACV or the various "oils" that are virus/ fungus killers. The problem is most folks don't keep up the regimen long enough to finish off the infection.
And I'm an example!
I've mentioned a few times on EC how a Live Cell Microscopy analysis found fungus greater than the norm in my system. I had to increase my own CS dose to three times daily on empty stomach to kill the fungus. I had been taking a few tablespoons four or five times weekly...not enough to kill the fungus.
But I suspected the "smoking gun" so that is why I had myself tested.

★★★☆☆WORKED TEMPORARILY
After getting horibly short of breath and sometimes even distressed after a sudden bout of heavy exersise (e.g. climbing a few flights of stairs), an ECG reported that I have AF (Atrial Fillibration). I am a 59 year old male who eats of high plant low meat diet but drinks too much coffee and beer.
The local Indonesian doctor who found the AF issue, suggested a typical Big Pharma regimen of nasty drugs. I recalled a friend who said he had dealt with bad heart palpitations using Mg (Magnesium) plus other minerals and vitamin supplements.
Before coming here to EC, I researched the topic and found that in emergency rooms, Mg is often introduced intraveneously to control bad cases of AF.
While visiting Australia last week, I bought some large bottles of Mg Ca K supplements and made up mixture of Epsom Salts (Magnesium Suphate) and water in a nasal spray bottle, which I spray into my lungs.
All this has helped. but it seems that if I let the amount of daily supplemented Mg drop too much, I too easily go into AF after heavy exercise. In other words, I have yet to find the right daily dose.

★☆☆☆☆WARNING!
Although many of you believe you have been cured of angina by taking garlic and flaxseed, I am afraid that is is not true and you are in a dangerous situation. These supplements are very useful and strong if used correctly...as prevention. However, they cannot unclog arteries. Please be good to yourself and reasonable. Use all available treatments and advice together! There are plenty of wonderful cardiologists who have a holistic approach.

Posted by Bella (Scottsdale, Az, USA) on 11/26/2009
I have the same problem with palpitations at night. I will try the sourgum and mollasses.
I also wanted to mention that all the soy here in this country is genetically modified. In fact, Japanese parents who have kids here going to college send them soy from Japan. They will not allow them to have the soy grow here because of the way we grow it. It also is not supposed to be good for women. It supposedly causes breast tumors and other female related tumors. I would investigate that if I were thinking of eating more soy. When I went on the LA weight loss diet several years ago(their diet is very heavy on soy products,) I developed nodules on my thyroid. It causes man boobs to. Thanks for the info.
Back to the palpitations. When you wake up at night, with them, what do you take and how quickly does it work? I'm pretty weirded out when it happens and I've been taking xanax an additional O.O5 when it happens. I've been trying to get off the xanax.
Thanks

I would like to add that I am completely unimpressed with kelp supplements. After talking with the nurse from my doctor's office about a week and a half ago, I found that I will begin treatment for an underactive thyroid at my follow up appointment at the end of the month.
After trying to educate myself about hypothyroidism, I decided that I'd help things along and get some iodine supplements. Not impressed with the fact that iodine can worsen thyroid problems, I bought a low dose supplement and decided I'd only take it twice a week.
Tonight was the third time, following a supper with more salt that I usually have in three days. Apparently the combination was too much and I experienced the palpitations James, from Seattle, mentioned. And they lasted for several hours. Definitely NOT the good kind.
B vitamins or not, I don't think I'll be taking anymore kelp. The experience scared me so much that my blood pressure shot way up and I'm still trying to relax enough to get it back down to it's normal 'slightly high' range.
Believe the warnings, people. Check with your doctor before trying kelp. Even the manager of the health food store suggested I talk with mine before trying it, but I sometimes think I know more than anyone else.
Believe me, you don't want to experience this. In between considering a trip to the emergency room, I really worried about the possibility of dying. That's how scary it was. Check with your doctor first... or you might have an 'exciting' night, too.

Hello from Chile.... A few comments of my own.... First time I read Earth Clinic and I thank everybody for their input. I am 71 and have had tachycardia since I was about 5, but had an ablation when I was 53 with great success. Now I have them once in awhile. Definitely, no caffeine, maybe a very diluted cup of tea. Definitely for me, the blackstrap molasses improved my digestion, very important because the food and gas push the diaphram upwards and causes palpitations. No overeating, especially in the evening. Cheese is difficult to digest. I will try all the things I think might help, especially not eating the yogurt. Try to avoid stressful situations as much as possible. Thanks for all the info

I started having heart palpitations, especially at night when I was lying down, about three months ago. It started to really disturb me. I take several prescription drugs since back surgery over a year ago. I am overweight and I smoke and was eating a very poor diet as well.
I did some internet research and started taking a B-complex vitamin and the palpitations stopped the very same day! This was exciting enough that I continued my research to try to solve other chronic issues I have such as acne, difficulty losing weight, and ongoing neuropathy (from my damaged spinal nerves) with a lot of success! I plan to post my success stories in other sections on earth clinic soon.
Among the more interesting things I learned while doing research was how long-term use of prescription drugs can deplete your body of certain vitamins. This is not something my doctors ever told me. With the smoking (I'm working on that) and a poor diet (I've since made some major changes), I think I was running on fumes, so to speak.
Since starting a good B-complex vitamin, I haven't had any heart palpitations at all.

I have A-fibulation of the heart and my heart rate is 90-120 all the time. I refuse to take beta-blockers and statin. In his book "The amazing way to reverse heart disease", Dr Braverman has described many cases of people with very bad heart conditions. He is returning them to normal by using mega doses of Vit B6 (at 500mg daily), magnesium - up to 3 gm, primrose oil (3 gm), taurine (3 gm), and many times recomends also garlic and fish oil of 3-5 gm per day (I'm vegetarian and replacing it with the better then fish oil formula of Ovega-3).
On the other hand, Dr Hoffer has also many cases when he had returned pationts back to normal with mega doses of Niacine (vit B3) of 2-4 mg per day (regular, not a flash free) plus mega dose of Follic assid (two to 3 doses per day of 15 mg (yes, mg, not mcg). You can read about his exeriences here: http://weeksmd.com/2009/01/dr-hoffer-on-cholesterol-and-niacin/

I also had occasional heart palps before pregnancy and at 36 weeks I developed psvt and had to take metoprolol and I stopped taking it after the baby was born, but magnesium and potassium increase did not help, only the beta blockers. I am 4 weeks post partum and have not had an abnormally fast resting heart rate so far. Hopefully it stays that way. I have had some occasional palps again though.
