My father was placed on a low-cholesterol, lowfat diet after a visit to a doctor. Within a month, he was losing his ability to find words, could not complete sentences, his sense of humor was leaving, and his personality was being altered. I am finalizing my doctorate in psychology and was listening to a lecture by Dr. David Perlmutter (author of Grain Brain) wherein he discussed the impact of lowfat diets on the brain when our brains consist 95% fat. I called my mother immediately after the lecture and we started my dad on 3 TBS a day of coconut oil.

In TWO weeks, he is able to complete sentences, he rarely searches for words, his sense of humor has returned and his IBS has subsided. Additionally, his hearing has also improved, which was an unexpected development. I am fully convinced as a researcher and someone who has seen the impact of coconut oil, that this marvelous oil can provide the nutrients that are missing in our bodies and resolve many health issues that we are facing today.

My mother is 80 years old and in the 7th stage of Alzheimer's disease. I found out about coconut oil on this site & did the research & looked at giving it to her even though it may be 'too late'. She is in full-time care, immobile and almost baby-like now so feeding her coconut oil is not so easy. We began about three months ago and we have had tremendous success.

We use coconut cream made up as a cosmetic cream and bought from the natural cosmetics section of the health food store. It smells like coconut and is quite cheap. My mother laughed the first time we put it on her arms. Members of my family each have a pot and we put it on her face, arms and chest every day now and her skin which was mottled very badly with large purple black blotches has improved greatly. Everyone reports that she definitely 'perks up' in 10 minutes or so after the cream has been applied. We get many smiles and she is watching what is going on in the room to a much greater extent. The nurses and doctors are very impressed and are looking at getting some coconut oil into the cooking regime for the rest of the people there. Just goes to show it is never 'too late' and worth it to see my elderly father still catching 'that smile'. Thanks Earth Clinic.

Here is a most interesting study on the benefits of simple coconut oil in the diet helping to prevent/cure Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. Many of the reasons are explained and presented in detail.

This study was carried out by Dr Richard Veech a senior researcher at the NIH. The ketones or ketone-bodies that this article talks about are derived from MCT's in coconut oil. Ted from Bangkok has also written widely about the many benefits of coconut oil containing MCT's and the advantages of using ketone bodies for energy in the body.

"While the hunt for the genetic basis of Alzheimer's and Parkinson's continues, and 'cure' in the form of foetal cell transplant turned into nightmare, senior NIH scientist Richard Veech is developing a promising approach that will involve dietary intervention.

A team, headed by Richard Veech, senior scientist in the United States National Institutes of Health (NIH), has made discoveries that may lead to a simple, effective treatment for Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases. A molecular shunt that feeds into the core metabolic cycle, can protect cultured neurons from the kinds of damages involved in those neurodegenerative diseases...
