Garlic for Tooth Abscess, Infected Gums and Teeth

I think I have overdone it with the garlic cloves on an abscessed tooth. I then used a tea bag on it and oil pulled with CO. It is a lower bicuspid I had a root canal on. It is also a tooth without a crown. My gum is raw and sore. It is important to note that this time I did not just bite on the garlic clove. Because I had read posts of people making a paste out of garlic powder, I tucked the clove between my gums and cheek where it was directly over where the abscess had come through. Is there something else I can use to soothe and help my gums heal because that area really looks bad. I also used a charcoal poultice but don't know if I can use that overnight. I'm fearful of infection. I took some CS at five o'clock.

Any advice would be appreciated.

In the last three weeks, I had both top wisdom teeth removed, they had decay and started hurting one at a time during a three week span, it would hurt when I laid down went about three weeks without sleeping well it would go away from a few days and then return, I used Ibuprofen for the pain when it was bad but I decided nothing was going to get rid of the pain long term besides pulling them, they can really mess with your sinuses when infected. It was a nightmare I am happy is over. Get em' pulled if your over 35 and they have decay root canals and fillings just prolong the inevitable.

Sorry folks, I have tried garlic, tea bags, and some ocean front property in Arizona for my tooth abscess. The only thing I found that worked was antibiotics.

Ultrasonic toothbrush is an awesome adjunct to garlic. I have been doing this for the last 12 hours and wish I had figured this out sooner. My pain is mostly gone within 5 minutes. Here's why I think it works... 3 reasons:

1. The vibrations of the toothbrush move the tooth thousands of times more than chewing, and cause and increase in fluid circulation- to flush out fluids- while moving garlic fluids in. You want garlic to move IN so it kills the infection. Chewing helps, but what if your tooth is too painful to chew on it? Ultrasonic toothbrush to the rescue.

2. When any cells has excess fluid, it doesn't work properly. This leads to pain because of a process I will describe later. When there is an increase of fluid that should not be there, our bodies have strategically placed nerves, like alarms, to alert us that "something is wrong." The experience of this alarm going off we call "pain." Our teeth have plenty of these nerves- and lots of fluid that should not be there = lots of pain. Add the pressure of the fluid adding to the tooth, and you have a bad situation- but how do you get the bad fluid out to stop the pain? Enter the ultrasonic toothbrush.

3. When you stimulate other nerves, from movement, it shuts off pain. If you have seen those Shaquille O'neil "Icy Hot" commercials lately for a battery powered pain pad, you are looking at this principle in action. Doctors have prescribed this type of stimulation (Tens unit") for decades, because it helps shut-off pain via the "pain gate" theory of pain. The vibrations of the ultrasonic toothbrush likely works in the same way. Movement caused by the vibrations shut the "pain gate" of the pain alarm.

Dear Chelsea,

Garlic can really sting and burn. If you do not prick it or cut it, the burn is less. You can also wrap it in a bit of coffee filter. It will still work. If the garlic is still uncomfortable for you, you could try activated charcoal powder, which also helps with pain and inflammation. I make a tiny poultice with charcoal powder (from the health food store) in an empty tea bag or piece of coffee filter and hold it to the pained area, even overnight.

If you have clove powder on hand, that may work too. It relieves pain and helps infection.

I hope it feels better soon.

Thank god for your website! I was in such agony due to an abscessed molar, taking antibiotics and tramadol for pain and received no relief until I found your website with the garlic treatment. The garlic relieved the pain and appears to be drawing out the infection and I am hoping that it will drain the abscess
Thank you for the information the great spirit is indeed great.

After reading several of Bill's post concerning Biofilms, I did some basic searches on this topic yesterday. Biofilms are particularly present in our teeth & gums. These Biofilms are like baggies, housing & protecting an array of pathogens including bacteria, viruses, and funguses. Controlled studies have shown Allicin, the active ingredient in Garlic, to be a somewhat effective Biofilm remover.

All the recent testimonies concerning garlic and gum disease being cured by Garlic is certainly topical proof of the clinical studies.

I had an infection in my upper eye tooth. It was very painful. I couldn't get an appointment for another week. I tried something I had read about on this site and it worked for me.

I took a large clove of fresh garlic, cut it in half. I formed a little opening in the center and fit the garlic over the tooth. It did burn somewhat. I would remove it after a couple of minutes, then reapply. I did this for about 2 or 3 days... Every time I sat down to watch television. When I did get to the dentist, there was barely any sign of the infection, and no pain.

While thinking about this, just now, I'm wondering if I had cut the clove in half, without peeling it first, it may have made a shield between the garlic and my inner mouth area.

Hi everyone... My story is like a lot of others here; had a tooth abcess in an old root canal, went to the dentist and got anitbiotics and an appointment to pull the tooth, but still I searched for something else till I found this site and read all the positive garlic reviews. Let me now add mine!

Decided to give garlic a try. Simple, and I had some in the kitchen, so what the heck? At bedtime, I cut a large fresh garlic clove in half and pressed it to the abcess site (upper molar) for around 5/7 minutes. I then chewed it up and swallowed it.

Like the others here had warned, It burned like Holy Hell, but along with the burn, I felt something else... An intense, dull ache that started after about 2 minutes, beginning at the swollen abcessed gum, then moving inside my tooth, till finally it was radiating all the way up the root and under my eye!

Despite the intense pain, I was amazed and I knew instinctively the garlic was working!! Initially, however, right after my first application (I did it for three nights), I thought I may have messed it up, because it swelled up even more. I guess the garlic just temporarily irritated the gum tissue, because the next morning the swelling and pain were both completely gone!!!

I was scheduled to have the tooth pulled, but will now go in and see what the dentist has to say. I imagine she will say that if there's no abcess, the tooth won't need to be pulled! I'll keep you posted.

Thanks to Earth Clinic, you wonderful posters, and Almighty Garlic! Hooray! I believe my abcess is gone! Gonna go do some cartwheels now!!

I woke up 3 days ago at 6am with a bad toothache. I went to bed the night before at 11pm with not a hint of pain. I called and saw my dentist that morn (Monday). She sent me to an endodontist.

The endodontist said I had a tooth abscess (top tooth, #4), "a real bad infection" to the root of my tooth, and that I need a root canal. He drilled my tooth and and drained pus. I asked, "How come I didn't have any pain at all the night before, and I woke up with such bad pain 7 hours later?" He said I had a "flare up". I had also self-medicated myself with ibuprofen 600mg at 6am when I woke up that day and at noon. After draining my abscess, he filled the hole, and his assitant gave me 600mg of ibuprofen (4pm). He then put me on a stronger antibiotic than he usually presribes (Augmentin instead of Amoxicillin) and prescribed Vicodin. I have to take Augmentin twice a day for 7 days until gone. He told me to take 600mg ibuprofen every 4 hours continuously for for 3-4 days to help keep the swelling down. My gum and face were swollen. I was to take 1 Vicodin every 4-6 hours, as needed, for (breakthrough) pain. I got to the drug store and took my first dose of Augmentin and Vicocin at 5pm, one hour after leaving the endodontist. I have to return to him to do more dental work in 2 weeks, which I already have an appointment for. He says he can't do any more work until the infection is gone.

I've been diligent about taking the ibuprofen (every 4 hours) and Augmentin as directed. I've tried not taking Vicodin, but the pain has been too much. So, I've been having to take Vicodin every 4 hours, with the ibuprofen, yesterday and Tuesday. (Today is Thursday). I've taken Vicodin every 8 hours since last night. I don't like taking pain meds or antibioitics at all, but I knew the infection needed to clear and I couldn't take the pain.

I came across this site, and I've got garlic on the infected tooth at this very moment. Instead of taking my next dose of ibuprofen/Vicodin combo, I went to the store and bought a head of garlic for $.50. I peeled and cut a clove in half. I put one half on one side of my tooth, and the other half on the other side of the same affected tooth. The garlic did not burn initially, as many have reported on this site. But I bit the garlic piece(s) three sentences ago, and I can feel the burn now. It's starting to subside, but the site is also throbbing right now. Ok, so now I'm chewing on the garlic again, allowing the oils of the garlic to penetrate around my toothache. I'm holding on, like everyone here says to do. My eyes are watery/teary right now. The burning/throbbing feeling and teary eyes slowly go away - until I bite into the garlic again. The burning/throbbing feeling and teary eyes goes away again - until the next bite. I try to put the newly-chewed piece of garlic on the affected tooth until the garlic is all chewed up and consumed. I'm holding on!

Garlic all gone now. I'm going to wait a few minutes to allow the garlic to do its thing in my mouth. Then, I'll oil pull with VCO to get the garlicky smell out of my mouth (hopefully). I should add, I drank about 3 tbsp of ACV in about 16 oz water just before I put the garlic in my mouth. I know the beneficial effects of ACV, so I knew it couldn't hurt.

At this point of my writing, I've eaten all the garlic. No burning, no throbbing, and no teary/watery eyes. I've just written a "live" play-by-play of the all-powerful garlic remedy on toothache/abscess. It seems to be working, as I write this. I'll oil pull in about half an hour.

I wish I had read about this remedy before I saw the dentist and endodontist. I wrote a check for $274 to the endodontist that day (half of the cost) and still owe $274 (and that's with insurance! ). Had I known about this cure, it would have cost me half a dollar only to be rid of this pain and infection.

I know I just did the garlic, but so far, so good. I'll keep you posted.

Thank you EARTH CLINIC for your awesome website! Thank you everyone for posting and sharing your experience, strength and hope with me.

just 2 days ago i was in pain all day long. it was keeping me up all night. even advil wasn't working. had 4 fillings done at the dentist and even a month later i couldn't drink cold drinks because it would hurt right away and i couldn't drink juice without brushing right away because it would hurt really bad 30 minutes later. noticed a bubble on my gums. found out it was an abscess. started researching tooth abscesses. while searching the web found earthclinic which helped me before with hypothyroidism, for that i used coconut oil. noticed that garlic really works for infected teeth and abscesses. at first i just rubbed half a clove of raw garlic sliced in half on the abscess. didn't really help. so i chewed 1/4 clove of garlic and let the garlic juice sit on the infected area for at least 10 minutes, sometimes 30 minutes. by the 3rd night all the pain was gone. now i can drink cold juice without the pain like before although if i do drink cold juice and don't brush its still a 1 on a scale of 1 to 10 for pain. thanks to everyone who posted their testimonials. can get back to my life now. earthclinic is a real lifesaver.

Ok...When I had my last daughter, I've been suffering for 3 years with dental issues. She took a lot of calcium during my pregnancy. As usual, the dentist couldn't abstract the teeth because I was pregnant. I lost most of my back teeth top and bottom. The crowns are gone and all thats left are the root part of the teeth. I will need extensive surgery to correct the problems.

I have been to the hospital on several occassions for this. Each time, they prescribed me clyndamycin (I pray that is spelled correctly) because I am allergic to pennicilin. Needless to say, I would have to take those for 15 days consecutive until all the antibiotic was gone..The pain killers they gave to me were Percocet, Oxycodone, Tylenol 3, and Vicondon.( not all in one, separate times) All of these made me sick.

What gets me is once I believe that one abscess has gone away, another pops up. This is the reason that I can not get the surgery yet. Not to mention, I am self employed and currently do not possess health and dental insurance. Paying for hospital bills and medication has strained my pocketbook, dress slacks, and bank accounts...

There have been way too many times that I suffered sleepless nights, missed meals, and tears from the excruciating pain. I am telling you, the pain was so bad that I often suffered hearing loss, eye and headaches(on the infected side), chest and arm pain. This pain was so bad that I called my mother in North Carolina a few times. I have never experienced such pain in my life. I'd rather have a million babies than to sufffer tooth pain..

What brought me to this site was after viewing my finances and my medication, I knew I couldn't afford to go to the hospital nor pay for the medicine.I had just taken my last antibiotic and the swelling and pain started all over again. On last night, I googled home made antibiotics for tooth abscess and this site was on the top of the search engine. I heard about clove oil was good, but when I saw garlic here, further reading was needed..

As I begin to read others story, many of them I related to. Thank you everyone for your testimonies. Most people said use fresh garlic. Well I didn't have fresh garlic in my home. I tried the next best thing. GARLIC POWDER. It did burn at first even throbbed a little. But after the burning the pain went away. I went to sleep and woke up with most of the swelling gone. I repeated the process again when I woke up this morning, once this afternoon, and doing it now as I type.

Garlic works in any form I believe. The pain is gone, but the swelling is still there but not as much. Most people say do it for three days. That is advice I will continue to use.

Downside to using garlic is bad breath. But when you are in pain, bad breath is the least of worries. I didn't have to do much speaking or talking so that was a blessing. If any of you know what I can do to get rid of the garlic breath, please inform me. Everything I eat has a garlic backdrop to it...don't like that too much.

I had a tooth abcess and went to the dentist. He gave antibiotics, which didn't work, helped nothing. So I tried my luck with raw garlic, grated fine, leave to sit for 10 minutes, pour some olive oil over, and swallow. Did it monday night, Tuesday morning, lunchtime, and by Tuesday evening it was down. Kept up the garlic and by the next day it was gone, till today!! I did keep on with the garlic, but once a day after the cure. It also seems to immunize one against flu, because all sorts of people with colds/flu were around me, coughing and sneezing, but I caught it not! Also my skin feels good, not dry and tight like before which may be the olive oil (cold pressed extra virgin) Thanks EarthClinic and all who contribute!!

I had a large abcess on my tooth which i had been treating for sometime with echinacea, goldenseal, garlic tablets, and hydrogin peroxide. Two mornings ago it really took a turn for the worse and I started to feel feverish and really ill. With no health insurance and no money for a dentist I went back to the web and happened on this site. After reading the information on treating dental problems I sent my daughter to the store for some fresh garlic. I started with a whole peeled clove which I mashed slightly to release the juices. I rubbed the abcess with it and then put it on the tooth itself and chewed it for as long as I could take the burning. After the second clove which I took about an hour later I started to feel a whole lot better. I no longer felt ill or weak and I felt my energy returning. I did the whole process five more times that day. The next morning my face, which had been extremely swollen; was back to normal . The abcess had gone down considerably. I then started using half a clove of garlic at a time and repeated the process once every three hours through out the day. It is now day three and the abcess has now almost completely dissapered. I would like everyone to know about this amazing treatment! Not only am I cured of this infection without the aide of antibiotics but the garlic cured it so fast it is like a miracle! I am now a firm believer in the healing powers of this plant.I will keep on using it on a daily basis from now on to keep the infection from returning. May God bless this site and the information contained here. THANK YOU!

I tried to follow what you did, but unfortunately I kept my first small minced clove of garlic 20, omutes followed with teh second -30 min. Then I did coconut EV oil pulling at the evening and morning. My face got swollen and everything on that side I put garlic is burnt.

The fistula stayed with the smae size, completely untouched. I must keep it too long or it was too strong for me. I am posting in case someone wants to try your method and I want them to be sure to NOT keep the garlic longer than 10 minutes in your mouth.

I read this site with some skepticism but pain will make you try anything and Ibuprofen was not helping. SO I tried the cloves of garlic and shoved them right under my lip and pressed them to the huge infected area. It burnt and stung but almost immediately the swelling disappeared. I also gargled with the cider vinegar solution and between both, the pain and throbbing disappeared - I slept like a baby. Unfortunately my tooth nerve is dead now so I still have to have a root canal, I wish I'd found this site sooner because the treatments really helped the infection, I wonder if I might have saved the tooth..

Oh, what raw garlic can't cure..... It's not that garlic cures infectious ailments both inside and outside the body it boosts your life giving auto immune system.... We were born with a system that is quite amazing to say the least. The auto immune system is working overtime in today's world.... Genetically, to know who you are is more important whereas everyone is so different yet totally the same when it comes to environmental hazards. We live in a quagmire of toxicity whether it be through the air, food or drink we take in..... Speaking of taking in, use raw garlic (chewed with food) as a spring, and fall seasonal pre-maintenence ritual .... Give your auto immune system a much needed break and de-toxify yourselves today. Glad that after all the pain, you've managed to control it. But did you go to the dentist after all this? And did you get the puss out of the abscess?

I'm having a gum boil which I didn't seriously treat it for a year. There is no pain but another small boil popped up nearby. So I started the oil pulling and taking 1 clove of garlic a day. When I read about the dangers, I get scared. If I didn't read it, I would have treated it like a bump that takes time to heal.

Hope to get some advise hot to get rid of the abscess. I'm OK on my current diet but I probably need to know if anyone put frankincense essential oil in their oil pulling procedures?
Or any other supplementary diet to look out for?

I had an implant that got infected; it was very red and had a raised area of pus; lots of pain. I followed Bill Thompson's suggestion using 1/2 to a teaspoon of turpentine, full strength, and held it in my mouth over that bottom tooth for about 5 minutes, maybe longer if no irritation.

I had no pain in an hour and kept doing this for 4 or 5 days and it never came back. Other times during the day, I would mix it with coconut oil and swish 20 minutes, then spit out.

For an upper tooth, you could place it on a cotton ball and hold in place.

After my tooth pain (upper molar) went away I still bit on garlic cloves until my ear pain went away...several days. I did not have the tooth extracted. I bite on a garlic clove once in awhile as a preventative measure. I also use a waterpik waterflosser.

I am going through an abscess on my upper right tooth now and I have been dizzy, off balance, had pressure in my ears, headache, and even tightness in my neck by my glands and mind you, my upper lip, under one side of my nose, cheek up to my eye is swelling. I've been on antibiotics for almost 24 hrs. But since this morning, I've been eating raw garlic and holding crushed or sliced pieces on my gums and tooth, the ear pressure went away, tightness in my neck went away too. Still a little dizzy. I definitely think it's related to the abscess.

Hi guys,

I developed a tooth abscess and it's been a year.It was getting bigger at first and then I somehow managed to reduce the swelling by oil pulling. And there is no pain fortunately. I tried swishing wheat grass juice and tried some garlic .Didn't work :( I read about colloidal silver on here. Not sure about that too :( I really expected garlic to work, sadly it didn't work.I used garlic religiously. But the size of the abscess is not increasing.I don't know what to do :( I don't want to undergo a root canal treatment. Now I'm thinking of colloidal silver and I'm a little skeptical. The abscess is white, hard and very small. I want to treat it naturally.

Any suggestions guys?

For those seeking additional natural recommendation with abscess gum, I would try alternating a warm compress to encourage the infection to release. In this day whereas some of the dentists' office try to prep us in advance for dental financing programs & insurance companies are excluding so much of what they (the dentists, ) insist is necessary - too many of us are caught in the crossfire.

I'm scared to death of the expense & risk of a root canal because my mouth is already jeapordised by illness. A dentist told me that I was not a candidate for dental implants many years ago, so I got upper & lower partials. Based on how he & his office staff treated me after they got paid nearly $8000, I simply don't trust any of them. Now I have this abscess and have suffered a week of agony and went to Urgent Care for antibiotics & low dose pain/anti inflammatory. I just used garlic for the first time after and I can already see & feel a difference.

Now I'll use a warm compress very carefully. Good luck to all!

Please go to the dentist-NOW! You're beyond home remedies and the infection could spread. I know from experience (three in two years time and one lost tooth). I'm all for natural remedies but you most likely need antibiotics at this point.

Dear Phyllis,

I am sorry about this dreadful burn! Here are some things I would try -

Internally - turmeric - 1/2 teaspoon 2-3 times a day for inflammation, pain and faster healing. Borage Oil at least 1000 twice a day to help heal more quickly.

Externally - I would not use vaseline. If you have not tried Manuka Honey, I would try it. If you can get some lanolin, it is in natural burn salves and we have found it very helpful. Manuka Honey mixed with lanolin might work well. If you could find a store with a comfrey salve in it, that would be another option.

I hope you feel better soon! Let us know.

Hello, I have read about various remedies for infected teeth and am trying oil pulling on an infected molar that has an older crown. Based on information from this site, I'm planning on trying garlic as well. I'm finishing some antibiotics now and have a dental appointment for an extraction, if needed - I'm not able to do a root canal (and don't want to). My goal is to be able to keep my tooth by healing it naturally - question is, do the various natural remedies work on a tooth that has a crown?

BETTER BUT WITH SIDE EFFECTS

Use garlic carefully. It may burn skin if you keep it in direct contact of skin for long time. I accidentally burned my cheek and jaw though tooth ache was gone. Now my cheek and burn jaw is burning like a hell.

It is 1:00 am and I am here searching for cures for this massive wisdom tooth infection and I'm very interesting what people has to said about garlic which is a WONDER!! For me as I read I find this post by Angy; 2 weeks a go I start experience dizziness spells that last everyday when I moved fast, I had problems with anemia the last year that start with dizziness spells so I thought anemia was hunting me back.

One week ago on Monday I lost my balance totally I feel my ears were clogged and had blurry vision at this moment I already finished a bad cold that last almost a week, until this moment I had no tooth pain at all. I went to see the doctor and I had some blood test done to check up on the anemia. My ear was sore like burning sensation I had some mild headache, the doctor check my mouth and ask about my teeth I told her that I have the 2 wisdom tooth roots left in each side top of the mouth, she recommend to go and see the dentist and get them out.

Like I said at that moment I had no pain after I got home I start feeling a little swollen in the wisdom left over roots in the right side upper mouth haha, next day Thursday got worst my off balance got better but the infection emerge so I start oil pulling and oregano tea which is amazing to put down the inflammation holy!! I truly recommend it Give it a try, you'll be impressed!!

Then I felt much better and today I got off balance that I felt fainting almost at work. I was scared so when I got home I start taking 2 big raw garlic cloves every 6-7 hours just like a pill, even when the inflammation go down with the oregano tea still sore around the gum so I apply some garlic skin or thin slice and yes it burns you just gotta bit a little careful but it works amazingly!!!

So Angy, I think this symptoms are related to tooth infection which my affect the inner ear.

I would like to know if anyone else got some thing similar dizziness, clogged ears, ear ache, off balance, blurry vision.

Tomorrow I will see the dentist and see if my symptoms disappear after the extraction ...hopefully do!!!

I have to said that I being using garlic in the past with successful results as temporary remedy but you gotta check it out with your doctor because that same tooth that give you problems a some point if still there it will give you problems again even if is after 5,6 or 7 years, they will come back. I thought this tooth was death 6 years ago and now I'm paying the price to not pulled out.

Has anyone had the abscess return after garlic treatment? My son who is almost 8, has an abscessed tooth. He saw two dentists yesterday, and the second one (a pediatric dentist) told us that when the other dentist filled a tooth last year (maybe Feb?) they went too deep and hit a nerve! So, bacteria got in somehow and is causing swelling on his lower jaw. He is not in a ton of pain (or possibly tolerates it well) but the dentist wants to remove his tooth. It's a baby tooth, so I'm curious, if I treat the infection, and continue to use garlic and/or Hydrogen Peroxide, can I wait until his baby tooth comes out? Or should we just have it pulled. They'd need to put a spacer in to keep the surrounding teeth apart until his adult tooth comes in. Any advice would be appreciated. He is currently taking antibiotics, and we tried garlic on his gums this morning, but it does STING! I tried it too...wow! I ate some too, and may give him some later today after antibiotics digest a bit.

Use castor oil on the outer jaw. Stops the pain and the castor oil seems to numb it.
