Hair

I started using coconut oil on my hair about a month ago. I have EXTREMELY dry and really frizzy hair. I put it on til my hair looks oily (not drippy oily but like its about time to wash it oily (lol)). I do not wash it out. I'm retired so I dont have to go out if I dont want to, if I did I would probably pull it back or wear a scarf. Because my hair is SO dry, I dont wash but once or twice a week. Within a day of putting on my hair, it has totally soaked in and not frizzy and not oily looking. (told you my hair is extremely dry). When my hair has been shampooed and i'm blow drying or hot ironing, I put some on (like when you put on "heat treatment" that is over the counter that you're supposed to use before blow drying or heat ironing).... I dont have to use all that stuff the hairdressers recommend using.... Shiney stuff, body stuff, heat treatment stuff, etc etc etc. I love the way my hair is starting to look AND with only ONE product. I use it also on my legs for conditioning but just started that and it takes a bit longer than lotion. Also, I started Apple Cider Vinegar about 3 weeks ago and my energy has really improved. I need to check and see what all Apple Cider Vinegar is supposed to do but I know I have some more energy. I LOVE THIS SITE!!!!

I will tell you something interesting. There is a province/state in India named "KERALA" which is derived from the word "KERAM" meaning coconut in its native language, which is "Malayalam". It is the land of coconut trees.

People here use only Coconut Oil for their cooking, for almost everything. It is one of the staple food in this province. It is also applied in the hair by most of the people.

The population of "Kerala" is 33 Million, then you can imagine what a staple food it is. So, you can take coconut oil. Good Health

Walmart does have organic coconut oil by Spectrum in their cooking oil aisles for under $7. However, it is refined. Also, Costco is now carrying cold pressed coconut oil in a large bottle. Can't remember the price or name because I just purchase it with everything else I get there.

Hi Erin... I am quite surprised at what you say and all the assumptions you have made in your last post:

"Neon, there is no medical evidence to support a "die off" theory at all. I have done soooo much reading and have yet to find an actual medical physician to support this phenomena theory."

I would beg to differ here. Just type 'Jarisch-Herxheimer Effect' in Google search and see how many thousand hits you get. Die-off symptoms do exist and are well-recognised by both modern medicine and also recognised by alternative medicine.

"I believe that people who cut out all sugar and carbs (or most) are denying their brains an essential nutrient that it needs to thrive. "

The misunderstanding here can perhaps be resolved by recognising our natural historic diet and and the truly destructive effects of refined sugars and other processed foods in our diets today.

Up until 10,000 years ago our natural diets consisted of fruits, root vegetables, berries and raw meat. Then we started to eat cultivated crops like wheat and maze. Today our diets consist of heavily processed and refined foods that contain all sorts of pesticides, fungicides, additives etc that are not part of our natural diet. We have been eating agricultural, cultivated crops for thousands of years -- and the truth of it is that our bodies have still not adjusted to this agri-diet yet -- which is why some people still have allergies caused by gluten and lactose. And so what about the fairly recent introduction of so many chemicals and GMO foods into our processed food? Do you think all this proliferation of man-made chemicals in our diets is actually good for us?

There was also a huge difference in sugar intake between the early 1800s and now. Up to the 1850s, very little sugar was eaten -- and usually only in its natural forms such as raw honey. During this time auto-immune diseases like diabetes, arthritis, heart disease, obesity, cancer etc were almost unknown. What people are also amazingly ignorant about is that the body doesn't really need sugar at all because the liver and the adrenals can also help to convert proteins and fats into sugar when they are needed for energy -- so you can easily get your energy from just fats and proteins in your diet.

As for the dangers of eating excess sugars and carbohydrates in our diets, here is an interesting Korean 10 year study, involving 1,300,000 participants. Various medical body parameters were tracked in these people over a ten year period. About 20,000 people got various cancers and it was found that, in all cases of cancer death, these cancer sufferers had sugar levels above 110 mgs/decL. In all those that had remission and recovered -- which was about about 3% -- they were all found to have low sugar levels at or below 90 mgs/decL in their blood. From their analysis, the research concluded, "We observed linear trends in mortality with increasing fasting serum glucose level for all cancers combined and for cancers of several sites". See the research here"

JAMA Article on Cancer and Raised Sugar Levels

So when you ask yourself "How did I get my candida" -- the answer and root cause must be because of what we did and what we didn't put into our mouths -- constantly eating unatural refined processed foods, additives, pesticides, fungicides etc or drinking tap water laden with poisons also including chlorine, fluorine, bromine and heavy metals which is also combined with a complete lack of proper nutrients in our diets today.

It's also well-known that candida proliferates and spreads rapidly in the body when sugar is eaten in excess in the diet. Sugar simply feeds candida -- which is why some candida sufferers crave sugary or sweet food. So when you eat excessive sugar and carbohydrates in the diet (which seems to be the Western diet in a nutshell), it really does not really surprise me at all that so many people in the west suffer from candida problems now.

For more honest information and for a better understanding of your candida problem, I would also urge and recommend that you read either Orian Truss's book, Candida: The Missing Diagnosis or William Crook's book on Candida -- The Yeast Connection. Both these authors were practicing medical doctors who specialized in treating and curing candida problems specifically using alternative methods and proper diet as their main tools.

Neon, there is no medical evidence to support a "die off" theory at all. I have done soooo much reading and have yet to find an actual medical physician to support this phenomena theory.

That said, I am not a doctor. I believe that people who cut out all sugar and carbs (or most) are denying their brains an essential nutrient that it needs to thrive. The symptoms of this carb deficiency are identical to the listed symptoms of "die off. " There is a medical systemic candida condition that results in people with compromised immune systems, and this is a lethal condition. You would know.

I take coconut oil every morning orally and it has never helped any external candida issues that are more common. Actual application did relieve symptoms greatly but did not solve the problem. I did not have "die off" symptoms bc I was not cutting out whole grains and all sugars from my diet.

The only negative symptom that I had was increased heart beat and sweating from an increased metabolism. I have read that this is due to the saturated fats improving the function of my heart, but I am not certain about this. The extreme heart palpitations went away as I decreased the dose and slowly increased to 1.5-3 Tablespoons/day.

It has been a month with no real negative side effects or positive results from consuming the oil. (Yes, I use the good stuff).

Anytime you start using a remedy that is supposed to help cleanse & purify the body or flush illness out of the body, you need to be prepared for side effects such as nausea, headaches, tiredness, etc. Used herbs that help to cleanse your body. For instance, herbs such as red clover blossoms & burdock root help to cleanse the blood. Milk thistle, cinnamon, barberry bark, peppermint leaft & ginger root help cleanse the liver & gallbladder. There are several good formulas & remedies, even accupressure, that can be used to cleanse the liver & gallbladder, a process that should be used in conjunction with any cleansing process. Certain types of hot herbal baths & cold wraps can help pull impurities out of the body thru the skin. And there are, of course, some herbal enemas that help to cleanse the lower bowels.

If you have a sudden reaction to a cleansing, simply back off of it for a day or two or change your schedule so that you're doing it every other day or just a couple of times a week, at first, instead of everyday. You can increase it as your body gets more used to it & the negative reactions become less.

Also keep on hand items that will help to boost your energy levels or help you to sleep better. Things like ACV, honey, blackstrap molasses & bee pollen can help increase your energy. Concentrated supergreens drink mixes & other herbs in capsule form can help do the same.

If I were you, I would put a little bit of coconut oil on the back of your hand, and leave it there for a few hours. If you notice that specific part of your hand starts to turn a little red or reacting in any way, you may be allergic to coconut oil.

I'm female and your age too and I'm very sensitive to many holistic products, and I am allergic to coconut oil. I found out the hard way though by putting some on my face like lotion, and it turned my face all red and irritated. I made sure it was organic and everything. I'm even allergic to apple cider vinegar!

So once you clear that away, and if you find out you arent allergic, then it just may be your body cleansing and rebuilding itself. Stopping the dose may just prevent you from gaining the benefits. Theres alot of information already posted here on how to introduce it gradually.

hope this helps!

Hannah: First make sure your air, food, and water are pure; then begin detoxing your body with the best women's multivitamin/mineral supplement you can afford. Also supplement the glutathione precursor NAC or N-Acetyl-Cysteine (this will detox the liver and more). One of the major problems w/ the vegan diet is lack of quality protein. For overall recovery, strength, stamina, etc. Either take Liver tablets or eat cooked liver as it is one of the most nutritionally dense foods. Whey protein powder mixed w/ milk or juice is also a very excellent quality protein.

Hello, I've been suffering from chronic symptoms that range from random pulsations in my stomach that cause anxiety attacks, vulvadynia, acne and strangely oily hair to more psychological and what I suspect to be hormonal issues for the past few years (I'm 25).

I have been on food allergy diets, and a series of antibiotics for constant infections, H-pylori, and Kidney infections etc. And do acupuncture regularly. I know something global is wrong with my body, but no one seems to know what... I'm sick of pumping chemicals and antibiotics into my body since they only reduce symptoms temporarily but leave me with a greater problem in the long term.

I took my first tbsp of Coconut oil yesterday and felt kind of weird and kind of good. Today I took a tsp. in the morning and plan on taking a tsp at night. I want to introduce it into my diet as gently as possible because my body is extremely sensitive and I want to make sure I tolerate it well.

I woke up today (kind of) and I was SO tired. I have been sleeping ALL day and had to force myself out of bed at 5pm (only because I was worried I wouldn't be able to sleep again at night.

In general I find I sleep a lot more than others and have a lot less energy, but today I just feel like someone bludgeoned me over the head... Is this normal?

Should I cleanse my liver or something else first before introducing the oil? I also feel I have a little bit of a headache, I saw that that was a side affect... about how long should I take the oil for before I know whether or not my body tolerates it?

I was thinking maybe I should do a liver cleanse, but I am a vegetarian and my problem is actually that I don't have ENOUGH fats in my diet, and I think I'm just about the last candidate for a fatty liver...

I guess, if I could condense this text, I would just ask, what is the most gentle way to start using Coconut oil, and how will I know if I should stop? Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks

That's the confusing part. When to know it is purely the result of a reaction and not of a die off?

Oil Pulling
Posted by Bman (Victoria, Bc Canada) on 11/06/2012

It's been awhile since Holly's post, but since people like myself use this site for relevant info I thought I'd add that depression and chemical sensitivities are both symptoms of candida (yeast) infections, and that cocunut oil can cause a die-off reaction as it kills the yeast.

A multi-year systemic yeast infection is what led me to this point. My symptoms got worse and worse as well as more and more (panic feelings, athlete's foot, jock itch, psoriasis, itching). Finally I tied together several of the symptoms through extensive research and came up with the idea of candida. But how to cure it? Everyone had an idea to sell me something, but I've been living overseas and have no access to these 'cures. ' Until I came across caproil as a possibility, and then learned that caproil is just a marketable part of coconut oil!

Since then I've been slowly adding more oil to my diet, stopping now and then when my die-off reaction became too much, and then getting back at it (insomnia, crawling/itchy skin, what felt like electrical reactions throughout my body, etc... ) I'm still only at 1 tablespoon a day, but I already feel so much better. All of my symptoms are gone or almost gone. And since I have learned of coconut oil's extensive benefits, I know its a superfood I will always be taking. I just wish somebody had told me about it earlier. It seems if there is no profit in it, we are all left to fend for ourselves. Good luck all!

Oh people please stop saying that VCO negative reactions are toxin releases! There is no medical evidence to prove this. People can be allergic, causing a rash. VCO _is_ however great against fungus and bacteria, but it is not extracting toxins from skin causing "flare ups. " That just does not make sense, and it certainly does not make sense to tell somebody who has a negative reaction to VCO that it is a positive sign.

I have been consuming 1-2 tblspoons of EVCO (whether the E means something or not) and applying topically, and I have never received a negative side effect, except an increase in heart rate when I first started (medical information to back this reaction up). No toxin die offs. Often when people feel they are having a candida or toxin die off, it is because they are also drastically cutting back in carbs. Look up the medical symptoms to cutting out all sugars and complex carbs from your diet. Oddly matches the "die off" and "toxin" symptoms exact.

Hi everyone, I am a female in my 30's, battling cancer and I am posting here in the hopes that some wise folks can answer me, I apologize in advance if my post is too long Earth Clinic! I would love as much details as you can please and feel free to email me directly:

serniczek17(at)gmail.com, as I never really know how to find my post and the answers on here. Ok so I have been researching coconut oil--I am using the organic, virgin, unrefined kind and started off by eating it daily in small doses. My cancer has thrown my hormones out of whack so now I'm in menopause and having horrible daily hot flashes, I can't sleep, I have these rage surges and generally feel like I want to scream and jump out of my skin. I haven't noticed any real improvement in these symptoms and have been eating the CO for about a month now, I drink it in my herbal tea. Advice welcomed.

Another side effect of the cancer is that I have developed wrinkles overnight and I hate it, I've always had such nice skin, I don't tan or smoke or drink and also read about ladies using CO on their skin. Again I see no improvement, I find that it really doesn't soak in, has any one used it on dry or wet skin? I have also been using sweet almond oil on my face and love the feel and I mix it with the CO on my skin, is that safe and are there any oils that I can mix for my facial wrinkles? I do like using the CO on my body as well but since it's so expensive I would much rather concentrate on my face. But the menopause symptoms are really killing me. If anyone can please answer all my questions in as much detail as you can I would truly appreciate it. My oncologists really don't want to deal with my concerns, only giving me synthetic hormones which I don't take as I am scared of getting another cancer when I'm older. I can't afford bio-identical hormones and they don't want to give me a blood test to even determine the levels of my hormones which is why I thought the coconut oil would be a good start. Thank you for reading, look forward to your help, please feel free to email me directly :)

hey, I have been observing the benefits of coconut oil and I have a lot of answers! I am in high school and doing my personal project on the benefits of coconuts because I was startled when I started researching about coconuts! It is a one of those miraclous edibles sent to us by God. Coconut oil has been proven to mildly help diabetics control their blood sugar level and improves the secretion of insulin. For the kidney, it helps dissolve kidney stones and also prevent the accumulation of fat in the liver. Pancreatitis can be treated. It is also a stress reliever along with its dental benefits and for the bones too! And do you know most indians use it for hair care, it really works and also for skin care for heart diseases and for those of you who find it really hard to loose weight, try the coconut oil! It also helps in immunity and for infections.

the book "the coconut oil miracle" might be a help for those who want to know more!

i have been taking coconut oil, and I really see the benefits! You will see it too if you take them often. :) x

I usually get a breakout right before my period but after reading about the many health benefits, I applied some VCO when I felt a tingle (first sign of a breakout). To my surprise, the breakout didn't occur! To confirm, I tried it the second time when I had another tingle. I have to say that I'm a true believer in VCO!!! Now I ingest it with my egg each morning, put it in my hair, and my skin. I used it as a sunblock and it worked! Coconut is so AMAZING!!!

I have been using virgin organic coconut oil, for several months now. I have been taking a teaspoon of it twice a day. It's properties are anti-bacterial, anti-fungus and I love the taste, and I keep finding more uses for it. My last visit to my general practitioner surprised both of us, my blood pressure was lower than it had ever been 120/60 and I am 70 years old. The only thing I have changed since I saw her last was the addition of coconut oil to my diet. I am now using it instead of moisturizer, and use it instead of conditioner for my hair. The results are miracleouse! Additionally my german shepherd who is 12 years old has been scratching and driving me crazy. I took her to the vet and thought possibly she had parasites. After spending $300, and several tests -- they could not find the cause of it. I starting giving her a teaspoon of coconut oil once a day, and just realized she is no longer itching. Additionally, she has lost her "doggie odor. " As there is not a lot about coconut oil on your site -- I wanted to share this. I believe it is one of the "miracle" foods!

Skin Issues

My advice to EVERYONE is to start at lowest dosages on all these great remedies.. I now take a teaspon of Coconut oil every morning for my breakfast, before I exercise. It gives me energy, keeps me fungus, virus, food poisening, bacteria free and seems to be all I need till noon or so. It also keeps me regular and tummy trouble free. (I still take a garlic capsule whenever I eat out to pre-combat unknown food poisening which I have had in the past) Ingesting coconut oil, inward and outward, in the beginning, created a smooth, lightened complexion after a lifetime of horrible rashy eczema that wrinkled, scared and totally aged & ruined my skin. Then I had a die-off that had me worried as my skin got totally worse until it got better. But, I've learned the secret of using natural products: go slow, go light, go consistantly. T. So here is what I do now:

DAILY FACE CLEANING:

1. warm, , damp cotton round, doused with coconut oil to clean once in the morning and once at night. (If rashes due to my food allergies appear, usually around my mouth, I dab on a little Balmex before bed)

2. M-W-F night: Mask or scrub: mix BAKING SODA with a little water. This further lightens dark spots and controls bacteria.

These two things are all I do for my face. When my skin feels dry, I light-dab CO & water on it. Took years of self-experimentation to get this right FOR ME.

DAILY BATH:

1. Smear CO all over- let sit for 5 minutes, then scrub off with a dry white cloth;

2. Mix up a 1 cup (pudding consistency) of water, baking soda, and optional spritze of organic cologne in small plastic tub. Get into the dry tub and scrub down body with mixture, letting it dry on for about 2 minutes.

3. Rince off with lukewarm or cold water.

(This bathing routine takes -15 minutes each morning and has great benefits: clean, non-smelly skin, removes wrinkles, dark spots, eczema and dermatitis. Plus, no deodorant needed.

INTERIOR BODY:

1. Coconut Oil (1tsp) for breakfast. ACV (2tsp/4oz water) before bed.

2. Lunch and dinner consists of : Protein/meat, fruit, veggies (many raw as possible). AVOIDING Milk, Grains, Sugar as much as humanly possible or I have "bad skin days".

3. At least 2-4 beer mugs of water daily and I try to sneak in a homemade veggie juice drink or smoothie whenever I can.

DAILY FITNESS:

1. 5 minute warm-up stretcch

2. 16 minutes rope-jumping on thick rubber mat ( alternate 1min jump/1min walk aroud) When done jumping rope, I walk around until my pulse gets under 100, then I continue to #3.

3. 5 minutes: sit-ups, weighted side-bends, and push-ups

This is it for me each day. It's simple, doesn't require supreme effort, just consistency. And it works! So, I know what I have to do each day now and I just hop to it!

Coconut Oil Caveats

I bought 3 containters of the Louana Coconut Oil and what a disappointment! I bought it at Publix and was so excited that it was on 6 dollars for each. I will promptly take it back tomorrow. I know Publix will take it back because that is the way they work. They had a different brand that was much smaller and I will look at it to see if it is organic and unrefined. I was so disappointed that this coconut oil did not even smell like coconuts and it is yellow, not white!!

Parasite tests, in order for them to be accurate my ND told me that you need at least TEN parasite checks at different times to determine if you have parasites, because parasites hide and may not be visible they go undected. I read that 85% of people have parasites, Parasite tests are 20% accurate, some estimate it to be lower shocking 10% accurate! The best lab for testing in the states is in Arizona. I was really sick flu-like symptoms: chills low grade fever, stomach pressure, colon pain, shortness of breath my heart rate would sometimes go up The MD had me try every single thing and I had been tested three times for parasites all the tests showed up negative, well Finally my MD suggested an ND best idea she ever had! I started the ayurvedic coconut parasite cleanse with cloves, with wormwood and gse.. Dramatic decrease of my symptoms by 80% in ONE DAY ! I'm posting this because I hope this seriously helps someone!

yes lita, there is a difference. Blackstrap has more nutrients in it but does have a strong flavor that some fine hard to swallow. Regular molasses is usually just used for baked goods. Also, try going to tropical traditions site for a ton of recipes for coconut oil use in food. I have been taking pure coconut oil for about a month at the rate of 3 to 3.5 tbl spoons a day. After about 2 to 3 weeks later I developed a loose and urgent need to release myself by ensuring that I made it to the toilet. The stool was not watery but it needed to be expelled. I then stopped for about 2 weeks of taking the oil. I then started again at a rate of about half a teaspoon a day. So far no urgent need to visit the loo. What is the cause of this?

Further what is the recommended daily dosage for an hiv patient who is not on any scientific drugs.

Your response and advice is urgently required and appreciated.

Thank you kindly. TPG

Raw VCO is best since is not processed. The cheapest I have been able to find it is $18 for a quart. It should be white not off white. Yes it is expensive but compared to drugs and doctors, its cheap.

Regular coconut oil is fine for external use I.E. Skin, hair. For consumption, personally I am creeped out by anything except the organic VCO. You might not feel you need organic, but use at least VCO for consumption. It is going to retain more of its beneficial qualities.

I like to put coconut oil in my oatmeal. You can just swallow it from a spoon as well but it gets my gag reflex going.... I fry my eggs in it and love using for oriental cooking and curry. Curried butternut squash soup is fabulous with coconut oil in it.

Hi Lita, There are plenty of ways to get coconut oil into you internally. You can cook with it and I have mixed cacao and honey w/ it for a treat. The easiest way of all I have found, to get it into my body, is in my morning coffee. It tastes good with a subtle coconut taste. Very easy, hassle free! Hope this helps, Lisa

You can and it works very well for that. However, if condoms are used then you should stick to a water based lubricant, I was told because it can cause it to break.

It is all because of the CHOLESTROL SCAM for the past 50 years. Media and medical industry promoted Sunflower oil, Corn Oil which is zero transfat and cholestrol free.

Really, sunflower oil and corn oil are not real traditional cooking oil.

The traditional cooking oils are:

Olive Oil
Coconut Oil
Sesame Oil

which can be used in any amount in cooking.

In India, the medical industry persuaded Coconut is rich in Cholestrol and convinced people to use sunflower oil.

But, cocounut oil is rich in Vitamin E which promotes proper blood flow in the body, prevents oxidation and balances the cholestrol. Foods cooked in coconut oil is very delicioius when compared with sunflower oil.

IT IS ALL BECAUSE OF SCAM, PEOPLE LOOSE THEIR TRADITIONAL VALUE ALL OVER THE WORLD.

Hi, I just started a fews things that I got off this website, which by the way I am obessed with. I want to know how can I take the coconut oil? Its seems a bit to much to take by itself, just wanted a few ideas on how I can take it internally. I would like something that I can do everyday without to much hassle.

Thank you, Lita

I am seeing a lot of credits for coconut oil and while living in a country that used to have coconut trees every where you go, it has quickly become the thing of the past. Coconut oil was the only cooking oil in the old days but its unheard of nowadays. You can't even buy it at groceries.

Now when you guys talk about CO, do you mean virgin coconut oil VCO? So are you really cooking with VCO. It must have cost a bomb. Will ordinary coconut oil have the same benefits?

And what about palm oil? Is it any good?

Hypothyroidism

I'm so glad I have found this website and read how Coconut Oil has helped with Hypothyroidism! I have recently changed my prescription from Synthroid (of about 10 years) to Armour (after struggling with my Dr.), and changed my diet after meeting with a nutritionist. I have more energy and my sex drive is much better. I am taking Symplex F (by standard processing), but I honestly don't know if it's the supplements, the diet or my new thyroid pill! I just know that I'm feeling better! I still get a little bit of the "brain fog", and have dry skin & hair so I'm excited to start taking some coconut oil and hopefully that will help!

Good luck to all of you who are trying coconut oil! This is a great site!

The LouAnn brand of coconut oil is a cooking oil. It is not organic, extra virgin, coconut oil. You can buy organic EVCO at Wal Mart, but they sell it in the vitamin section, not the cooking oil section. It costs around $10 there. I made the same mistake once. They are not the same product at all!

With the coconut oil, do you heat it in the microwave so it dissolves or you just melt the solid in your mouth?

Hello. My sister loves taking the coconut oil too and uses it on her face. I also have sugary cravings too. But I have to watch my cholesterol. Is coconut oil high in cholesterol? Its supposed to be good for certain skin conditions too. If anyone can get me more info on coconut oil, I will apreciate it. Thank you so much. Love this website!

Hi Pat, I would try taking organic coconut oil internalls - start out really slow, though, because it can cause quite a detox in some people - I started out taking 1/4 teaspoon! I personally cannot take Virgin coconut oil - it gave me heartburn. However, I am able to tolerate organic, expeller pressed coconut oil. I have found that coconut oil and MSM are the best supplements ever for hair - don't despair!!

I have had a thyroid problem for 9 years and before that I never ate sweet things. I became a sugar junkie and could not control my sugar cravings. Since discovering coconut oil I don't have the overwhelming urge to eat sugar and have much more energy. I also have lost some weight and feel so much better. I eat 2-3 dessert spoons of coconut oil and use it for my face and body. I have smooth beautiful skin and its so much cheaper than all those expensive products I use to buy. Thank you Earth Clinic for another amazing discovery.

Hypothyroidism

Hi, I know this is an old post, but I recently posted about my accidental success in finding my long lost sex drive after using Magnesium Chloride. I posted under the female hormones/ dysfunction. I was using MgCl (Swanson brand) to balance my urine pH, and insomnia. To give a history, I had cancer at a young age about 27 yrs old. Now, at 43, I have been with out my sex drive for nearly 15 years- when I finished chemotherapy. I have been seeking my health since then but doctors were not able to help. I researched a lot and decided to start with basic vitamins- b complex, methyl b 12, vitamin A, E and benfotiamine( a fat soluble B1). The methyl B12 and benfotiamine helped significantly with chemo induced nerve damage in my feet and hands 15 years ago. Within a week my feet burned and numbness increased and then started to get better. I was taking 150 mg benfotiamine and 3000 ug at the time. Improvement quickly followed. I later increased the b12 to 5000 ug and again the pain increased and then the numbness got even better. My numbness is not 100% but at least 80-90% better. I only feel the numbness now when it's really cold, and it is much much less noticeable. I have been taking these since thanksgiving 2011. A side effect I immediately noted with b12 was a significant increase in body temperature from 97.2 to 98.0-98.6. I also noticed more energy and less fatigue which is huge since I have had chronic fatigue syndrome since completing chemo in 1997. The vitamin A (30,000 iu daily) has kept me from getting all the usual colds and flu. I am normally the first person sick and the last one too since I usually get sick a second time after my family catches the illness from me! I did not get sick once since starting the vitamin A. I tried to reduce the dosage twice but both times started getting something in my lungs within a week or so of lowering the dosage. Needless to say, for now I am staying at the higher dosage. I found accidently that vitamin E reduced my menstrual cramps from needing three days of ibuprofen Every 6-8 hours to not taking any for the last three months. I started taking 1000 iu daily of natural vitamin E but will reduce to 800 iu once this bottle is gone.

Now for the most important fix: sex drive! I was taking magnesium citrate at about 50 mg daily then worked my way up to 200 mg daily internally. I also have ibs and had a low tolerance to Mg as it caused diarrhea. In order to get more Mg, I started MgCl oil and rub it undiluted on my legs and arms and belly just before bed. Most people wash it off but I guess I'm too lazy and just go to bed. If it itches- cuz sometimes it does, I rub on lotion or coconut oil. After about a month, my sex drive started to return. Sex is more enjoyable- no tightness or discomfort of low hormones like before, and the Big O is easier to achieve than ever. The magic of magnesium is worth every penny. And that is not counting the deep sleep, improvement in insomnia, and the reduction of muscle tension I never realized I had. The chiropractor had been adjusting me three times a week since the adjustment just wouldn't stick. Now he adjusts me once a week and only a couple spots compared to all over my back and neck before. I started each supplement individually due to my extreme sensitivities to supplements and foods.

I must say I also have a lot less spasms in my GI from IBS and food sensitivities since taking magnesium!

Ps. I have found this site tremendously helpful and only hope to give back!

Oh yea. Too much benfotiamine can cause diarrhea. I could only tolerate the 150 mg daily although the studies I read used up to 600 mg daily.

Good luck on finding your health and my God bless and heal you.

Regarding your statement that coconut oil is too thick to be absorbed though the skin: are there studies to show this? These studies seem to indicate otherwise ...

Oil Pulling
Posted by Miles (New York, NY) on 05/18/2012

Right seems we're moving into discussion about the practice of "oil exchange" for detoxing and healing from many health conditions. Maybe its discussed elsewhere on this amazing site! But here's a bit with few things that may be of interest:

It's said the ever-intelligent body pulls toxins and posions out of circulation by trapping them in the fat cells where they will stay for years unless detoxed. Over time the toxins accumulate, disrupt body functions and manifest as disease.

There's a number of people who've written about this:

* Udo of Udo's Oils wrote a book about how he healed himself using "oil exchange" after he experienced serious ogranophosphate poisoning (nerve agent used commonly in herbicides and commercial lawn care applications -- symptoms of which manifest as depression, anxiety, brain-fog and more. ) He says he drank up to 12 TBL of good oils daily (omega 3 like flax oil and omega 6 like borage oil) in conjunction with saunas to assist the removal of toxins.

* Dr. William Rea head of the Environmental Health Clinic, who's helped restore people to health after toxic exposures like 9/11, Katrina, and the Exxon Valdez clean-up, believes a huge percentage of "diseases" and conditions are related to chemical toxicity. Part of his protocol includes sauna to remove the toxins and good oils supplmentation, as well as PPC - phosphaytidylcholine which is found in lecithin (and naturally in egg yolks and krill oil), and is a lipid (good oil) that helps restore and rejunvinate cell membranes in the liver, instestines, brain etc. and is providing good results for maladies in these areas (like alzheimers, chemical sensitivity, Hepatitis C, cirrosis, etc.)

(See also Drs. Kane and Shoemaker who've had great results treat patients with chronic diseases using "lipid exchange" -- IVs of PPC and glutathine.)

and then

* Deepak Chopra recommends oil pulling ... which is perhaps a great "DIY" version. Curious if someone might explain how coconut oil specifically factors into this concept of "lipid exchange" for healing?
