Prescription Meds for LS
Posted by Jillery (Rawlly, Nc) on 12/24/2017 88 posts
★★★★☆

I have tried just about every natural remedy that is listed in EC even with help of my naturopath for a few years. I finally went to a dermo who is well versed in LS and he prescribed Acitritin (ended up on 25 mg per day until he decides to decrease again. We ramped up originally as he had good results with other patients ). I also use a topical as well. I still get flares but it is from stress or skipping the ointment a few days or weeks. He feels if I do this for a year I may be able to go off of everything. My skin is so much nicer. The ointment is called Tacrolimus 0.1% Doc also has me use Burt's Bees baby wipes. He is in Chapel Hill NC. Dr Kenneth Becker. Some of the natural stuff would work a few days or weeks and then I would get a horrible flare. This rash just seems to continuously morph... but that is autoimmune stuff. I keep reading just incase something diff comes along so I don't have to do the drugs. (btw, my LS was a dry spot outside vagina and then a 'hot spot' where my butt cheeks touch. I have gotten 'plaque' (really weird dry skin) in both those areas. I had also had like a thrush baby rash from my mound up and over my belly. I have my labia and clit. Good luck all.... lots of work. hugs~

Castor Oil and Essential Oils
Posted by R D (Iowa) on 08/17/2017

I have also been diagnosed with Lichen Sclerosus and the meds from the Dr have not helped. I have purchased an organic Castor Oil (Aura Cacia) but it says for external use only. Is it still ok to use inside the vaginal area? Along with the Lavender and lemongrass essential oils.

Any help is appreciated!!

Thank you

Another possible cause of LS...

I have had LS for 20 years and while it mostly stayed calm, lately the itch around my genital area is off the chart so I am delighted to find lots of options on your site to try out. I had a suspicion, which others have validated, that years of wearing sanitary towels is a possible contributor, especially if during the 70's, 80's etc.

Just found out I have Lichen sclerosus on my forearm .. That's a good place I'm finding out .. I only hope it doesn't,, show up >>somewhere else>> doing what the doctor ordered .. Right now clobetasol for three weeks. Keeping it covered .. But thing is it doesn't itch,, not yet .. I've had it about two months .. So I'm looking for natural cures.. I see I have many I already found out .. Trying baking soda,, helps most fungus .. don't like alkali environments,, same as cancers .. I'll keep you all posted on my results..

I've been mixing a batch of castor oil and lemongrass and lavender oils rather than mixing every time I use it. It isn't helping very much and I've been using it daily for months. I use clobestol sparingly as it can make the situation worse my doctor said. Any other natural remedies that someone has tried.

Castor Oil
Posted by Judem (Illinois) on 05/04/2018

I've had LS in my genital and anal area for years. Stopped using steroids because of the thinning of skin in that area. It would split and bleed. I've used 1% hydrocortisone cream for the itiching and try to remember to put it on several times a day before the itching starts. I recently saw a spot on my underside of my breast. The dermatologist diagnosed it as LS without knowing I'd have a previous history. the strange thing is, it has never itched. I'm wondering if the itching is more common if the LS is located in parts of the body where it's skin on skin, or if natural moisture has something to do with it. I am going to try some of the remedies suggested on here. Right now, at the direction of the doctor, I'm back to using a steriod cream, but I want to get away from it as soon as possible. Thanks to all for your input. I've learned a lot.

Hello Ocean51, how is your LS doing atm? This post is from 2 years ago but I hope you will read my message. I have recently been diagnosed with LS and I am looking to try PRP. Your feedback will be extremely helpful. Did you need to do another PRP treatment of several sessions? If yes, in how many months after the first one? Was the effect as strong as the first time? Are you using any steroid creams atm?

Jodi, I think you've got something there. I've had LS for almost 30 years. It started in 1987. I was having sex with my ex-husband 5 years after we were divorced. I think mentally I was trying to stop and that was my defense mechanism. Thank goodness he met someone and stopped needing me. You mentioned Aloe Vera but didn't say if it helped. LS - Hyperthyroid Connection
Posted by Seeker (East Sussex) on 04/05/2015

I have a theory about lichen sclerosus and wondered if it applies to anyone else. I heard that girls born to women with an overactive thyroid whilst pregnant have a high chance of developing LS. This applies to me, does anyone else have a mother with LS and who had it whilst pregnant?

LS - Hyperthyroid Connection
Posted by Justine (France) on 08/15/2017

My mother had a thyroid operation when I was very young. I think she had it removed and subsequently was told that it was underactive as she gained weight. She developed LS of the vulva in her 50s and now has scleroderma in her fingers. I have never had any health problems but at the age of 43 I developed LS of the vulva. Could be an interesting line of enquiry to see if there is a connection.

Baking Soda
Posted by Frances (Carbalah, Qld.) on 09/23/2016

Yes, in Austalia, probably same in Scotland, Baking soda is the same as bicarbonate of soda. I use bicarb. of soda in a spray bottle of distilled water after urinating. Easier than using heaps in a bath. It does ease the itch but doesn't stop the condition, which is an autoimmune disease according to naturopath. GP's just recommend the high-strength steroid ointment.

Dietary Changes
Posted by Pan (Holland) on 12/06/2014

Hi Emily, Do you mean you are cured? Is it really gone, or 'just' the symptoms? I can prevend the itching by using oil on the white area, but the pain stays. I do not eat/drink: gluten, sugar, dairy, alcohol, black coffee, black tea. I meditate and sport a lot. My main whish is to get back the soft skin around my clitoris. It is hidden now...and I would love to dare being intimate again, without pain and with more joy!

Dietary Changes
Posted by Priscilla (San Mateo, Ca) on 03/05/2016

Emily, Do you mean you have cured your Lichen Sclerosis by eating a raw food diet? How many weeks of eating the raw vegetables, including the greens, and berries as fruit did it take?

Are you still cured? Do you no longer have 'itch" or 'white patches" in the pubic area?

I bought a book called " LICHEN SCLEROSIS -HEALING THE DISEASE" by Ginny Chandoha...Helping the Body Heal Naturally" ISBN9781836711345, , , how she cured her lichen sclerosis..

Among other things, she used organic, unrefined, coconut oil on her itch and stopped the itch at that moment...etc She eats organically.. Also heard that Dermatologist Doctor prescribed steroid cream DESONOIDE CREAM 0,05% that took itch away..to be used sparingly.

Has anyone read this book or tried this cream? And cured themselves? I just got this book this week. Great ideas in it that helped me a lot.

LS and Hypothyroidism Connection
Posted by Kat (Florida) on 02/13/2016

I have LS and hypo/hyperthyroidism depending on thyroid med dosage :) It fluctuates all the time. I currently started using Ashwagandah for thyroid and adjust it according to hypo/hyperthyroid symptoms (Now using three a week - Mon, Wed, Fri). Seems to be a good fit for me. Haven't had a blood test since starting it almost a year ago; but according to the symptoms it is working well. It is good for many other medical issues too.

Didn't know LS and thyroid were linked. This is interesting. I use various combos of essential oils in emu oil topically for the LS ... the itching of LS is less with ashwagandah, but the rash and patches are still there.

Eliminating Wheat

Did you just go wheat free and sugar free, or grain free? Due to my jst flashes, insomnia, my nutrtionist said I should give up all grains which I did for almost two months and things were getting better but not quite perfect, I think nightshades and dairy are culprits... It was just so expensive eating organic, buying all my vitamins, etc that I. Ould to keep it up. I ended up going on bioidentical hormones which mostly work. I believe I have had LS for over ten years and just now my Dr did a biopsy for it. I'm using cortisone but it's only been two weeks and things are a bit better but far from perfect. I have raw areas around my opening that aren't healing much, I have not been able to have intercourse for six months. Wondering what to do. I will try wheat free and sugar free and go from there I guess.

Hi Daisy, Can you tel us how long you took the essiac tea tonic and how many times a day did you take it? How many drops? You are the first person who has ever been cured of LS that I have seen. I have Lichen Planus and have been trying to cure it for almost ten years. My doctor and dentist admit they don't understand the disease. Mine is all internal and systemic, no skin outbreaks.

I have been trying Lisa's suggestion for water kefir for about a month and I think it is good for the whole body. I have ordered some essiac tea with high hopes, and passed your tip along to others with LP. I am praying this works for me and others. Thank you so much for posting!

Zinc Oxide
Posted by Sydney (Richmond, Virginia/usa) on 11/10/2012

I have had LS for 18 years. I have tried everything my doctor has suggested and had it under control for many years. About 1 1/2 years ago I had a flare up that has persisited. I am burning and itching. I can no longer use the prescription medications. I have tried Perrins products which helped at first but are no longer giving any relief. I am considering other options such as Emuaid and the Zinc Oxide powder or Scar-Zone mentioned above. I have tried Desitin which contains zinc oxide, in the past however, and am wondering if I need to even try to zinc oxide products. Can someone tell me if there is a significant difference? Has anyone tried the Emuaid?

Also, for immediate, calming relief there is a product which is mixed with water and used as a compress. It is available at most drug stores and is similar to the vinegar idea. I have used this for years with flare ups.

Hi - I have had LS for 30 years, but until recently I have not had to treat. I use emuaid, in fact I just ordered the moisturizer bar today. It works very well for the itching and burning. I stopped using it to treat with hormone cream my dr prescribed, and this was a big mistake. I cancelled my follow up appt with the dr and started using the emuaid again. Like every one else, I am looking for something to fix me, so I am also trying many things which I have found on this site. Lavender has also worked well, I mix a few drops in with the emuaid. Good luck!

Zinc Oxide

How much Zinc Oxide powder, and how often. Do you apply it or ingest it?

Zinc Oxide
Posted by Mama To Many (Tn) on 08/08/2016

Zinc oxide powder is only for external use. You can look for a diaper rash cream with zinc in it for external use.

How are you now? Do you still need the Zinc? Has all the skin returned to normal? Hope you are doing well.

Hi Cindy, I have been with LS for 2 years now, my symptoms had disappeared during this past year but came back with a vengeance, you said you bought powerful antioxidants, can you share which kind, were they powder form, last night had a sitz bath with ACV for the itching and put some clobetazole or else wouldn't have slept much

Anti-Candida Diet

I have vaginal Lichen symptoms and have had chronic vaginal candidas for many years. I am wondering if vaginal yeast infection is THE precursor to vaginal Lichen Sclerosus? Has anyone had the Lichen problem without a pre-existing candidas problem? Just trying to locate the possible origin of my condition. Thanks.

How is apple cider vinegar demineralizing your bones? I thought it made the calcium in foods more absorbable? Please explain.

That's interesting, I have developed the condition since having an ovary removed. I wonder if correlated with the surgery?

Thank you for sharing your remedies. Do you apply the lysine and aloe Vera topically or take it orally?

For the LS to stop the intense itching... Take the lysine powder and mix it in the Aloe Vera and apply topically. You may need to start doing it 3x/day until it puts the fire out, then you will only have to do it daily. It worked for me. Best and stay blessed. This is an awful disease.

Finally.. A website that gives me some hope. I have written down EVERYone's suggestions and may have to give up work just to manage this LS!! (I wish). But, thanks all for sharing the tips.. I about to embark on a gluten & dairy (&sugar) free diet, see a naturapath AND try many of the 'remedies' on this page. My wish is to stop the steroid creams.. that stop itching but not the progression.. And keep enjoying sex!!

Aine, If a person has an autoimmune illness, this would overstimulate the system to attack the body even more.

“Hyperimmune egg is an egg from a hen that has been vaccinated against certain infectious diseases. The hen develops specific antibodies that rev up the immune system to fight the specific diseases included in the vaccination. These antibodies pass into the hen's eggs. People harvest the eggs and remove the antibodies. These antibodies are then used to treat diseases in people.”

“How does it work? – Antibodies contained in hyperimmune egg are thought to stimulate the immune system and help the body fight disease.” – www.webmd.com

I have never used the creams or vagisil and I have lichens sclerosis. I do eat primarily organic foods sourced from local farmers markets along with ranch raised eggs dairy and meat.

I find recent stress has aggravated my lichens, that had been in remission. I will go back to the obgyn for evaluation today.

I will seek more prp treatments and one of the topical treatments on this site. I can't tolerate the steroids. The platelette rich plasma treatment has kept the symptoms at bay for over a year. I will keep my hope and faith that it will push it back into remission. I am afraid I will have to change my work out routine as well. It's a life style thing, I'm afraid.

Has anyone tried Coconut Oil for this condition (LS) ?

Neem Oil, Green Tea Extract
Posted by Terlyn (Syracuse, Ny) on 12/28/2009
★★★★☆

I have had LS for a few years to the puzzlement of my gyn until September when the white spotting finally appeared. I tried calendula oil then castor oil and now I am in my 2nd week of Neem oil with a green tree extract added 2 or 3X a day. It is messy but it brought me healing relief.

The others brought relief from the itching and bleeding which is a blessing but I want it to heal and not continue to split.

Apple Cider Vinegar

I have had Lichen Sclerosus (LS) for 2 1/2 yrs with almost no itching but lots of inflammation and soreness. The steroid ointments just seemed to make it worse. I tried apple cider vinagar on a little cotton with water and this seems to help the inflammation. I can't wear underwear/long pants as it seems to irritate the area. Does anyone else have the same type of LS? I am tired of going around in my nightgown. Thanks

Kerry from Winatchee....... I also suffer from both ailments - adrenal fatigue and lichen schlerosis. I had the lichen schlerosis under control with steroids, but now it's back worse than ever a few years later. I'm looking for a better solution. Natural if possible.
