Ted, I followed this pectin experiment on hogs. I ate one-half grapefruit a day, . I peeled the skin and ate everything including the pith (white part) , except seeds. I took most of the pith from the peeling and ate them too. Little bit bitter, but after one month my cholesterol dropped down a lot.

Curry Leaves, Garlic and Black Pepper for High Cholesterol

This is a remedy tested by many and found effective. 10 fresh, washed curry leaves, one pod of garlic and 2 peppercorns, to be crushed and had at any time, with or without food/water etc. In a month the cholesterol will come down significantly. My partner and son have both experienced its benefits and I have just started using it myself.

Curry leaves are commonly used in Indian cooking, but are now available almost everywhere in the world.

Red Yeast Rice
Posted by Art (California) on 10/29/2022 2891 posts

Alan M.,

Red yeast rice has the active component Monacolin K which is chemically identical to the active ingredient in the statin drug Lovastatin :

https://www.nccih.nih.gov/health/red-yeast-rice#:~:text=Some red yeast rice products contain substances called monacolins, which, the category known as statins.

Here is a relevant quote :

' Red yeast rice products may not be safe; some may have the same side effects as certain cholesterol-lowering drugs, and some may contain a potentially harmful contaminant. '

Lovastatin is known to cause muscle pain and muscle damage :

https://www.healthline.com/health/drugs/lovastatin-oral-tablet#important-warnings

Here is a quote from the article :

' Serious muscle damage warning: Using lovastatin raises your risk of serious muscle problems. These problems include myopathy, with symptoms that include muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness. Myopathy can lead to rhabdomyolysis. With this condition, muscle breaks down and can cause kidney damage and even death. If you have unexplained muscle pain or weakness, stop taking lovastatin right away and call your doctor. '

Another option might be lecithin granules at two tablespoons / day. It can be thrown in a small glass of water without mixing and just drink it down or it can be sprinkled on foods, desserts or added to smoothies.

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3065734/#:~:text=Lecithin is capable of reducing, nervous system and brain activities.

Here is a relevant study quote :

' One-two months before the treatment beginning, blood samples were collected for total lipids and cholesterol fractions analysis. The results showed a reduction of 40.66% and 42.00% in total cholesterol and of 42.05% and 56.15% in LDL cholesterol after treatment for one and two months, respectively. A significant reduction in total cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol concentrations was observed during the first month of treatment, suggesting that the administration of soy lecithin daily may be used as a supplemental treatment in hypercholesterolemia. EC has a search engine and you can use that b/c I make mine different. I don't cook mine down. Here's how I make mine.

I C of ACV w/ mother

1 C of lemon juice

1 C of garlic juice

I C of ginger juice

1 C of water

1 C of honey

I blend a whole bud of garlic with the lemon juice which is about 3 fresh lemons and I blend the fresh ginger with the ACV. After they're blended I add the cup of water and blend more. After it's blended I add the honey and stir. Put in an airtight container and shake. I don't cook it down but keep it in the fridge and after meals have a TBS of it. You probably should do it according to the directions but I have chronic gastritis due to fibromyalgia so my stomach is more sensitive.

My husband caught a very bad cold over the Christmas holiday but I took this every 2 hrs and my cold was very mild, I thank this for it. Good luck and happy heart health!

Dietary Changes
Posted by Pacific Coast Lady (Crescent City, CA) on 08/15/2021

Why don't I read anything at all about changing our diets? I'm finding amazing results with my blood sugar levels (I have type 2 Diabetes) and last hba1c was 6.2. I eat a Keto diet, high fats, low carbs (below 50) and proteins.

Now I'm changing my dairy intake to pretty much zero because my cholesterol shot up to 389. I've read many times it is most important to divide your Triglyceride # by your HDL #. I've also read and heard that people that are living longer have high cholesterol numbers, and those that die earlier have low LDL numbers (low total cholesterol numbers).

I'm nervous about information being true, or untrue, so I am going for lowering my intake of dairy products. I have to tell you though, long (back to my 20s and I'm 68 now) I did not do dairy! I just didn't care for any dairy products! But I'm going to try anyway. I eat mostly lean meats but add some olive oil, lots of veggies, low amounts of carbs and only safe carbs (so I've read) like berries (strawberries, blackberries, raspberries and I gotta have a few blueberries).

I can't remember why but I was scared off from Lecithin when I used it for a couple of weeks. I first ordered the wrong thing, then bought what was supposedly the right thing but something was going on that made me think it was the lecithin. I know I need to keep better track of these things. Input welcome, I just think we should talk more about our basic diets before piling on the ACV, Lecithin, or any other fix.

Oatmeal
Posted by Denise (Nashville) on 04/01/2025

Oatmeal does work for lowering cholesterol, but the high carb factor (even with the built in fiber) messes with my blood sugar. I found something even better--Amla fruit. I purchased powdered form off Amazon and my LDL went from 223 to 164 in less than six months. Be sure and order the type that has been tested for heavy metals as it's a fruit from India. You may be able to find the actual fruit at your local international markets. Dr. Greger (real M.D.) recommended on nutritionfacts.org --to see the scientific report. Game changer.

HDL is 87

LDL is 29

Trig's is 46

Total cholesterol is 134

I started taking fenugreek capsules back in the winter of 95- 96 for sinus issues. Every winter I immediately got a sinus infection. Cholesterol began to change and hasn't stopped.

I spend 12 to $15 for a year's worth of fenugreek capsules and take one a day and have done it since that winner of long ago. Most of my relatives had started taking fenugreek because of me since none of their prescription drugs worked.

Last year my HDL was 94 but this apartment has a lot of mold in it that keeps coming back and my immune system works overtime.

Soy Lecithin
Posted by Katkat (Lexington) on 12/21/2017
★★★★★

I took soy lecithin for cholesterol years ago and didn't see that it made a difference. I just ordered some red yeast rice, so it should arrive Sunday afternoon and I'll start taking it. Any idea how long it takes to work? Also, as to keeping the arteries clean---it is my understanding that cholesterol acts like a bandaid in your veins, covering irritations so that they can heal. Most irritations are inflammation, so anything that corrects inflammation should correct the cholesterol issue. Inflammatory foods are sugars, processed foods/flour, etc. (I confess, I had been eating sweets since Halloween and brought my problems on myself). Anyway, I am also adding garlic and turmeric to my daily routine of niacin and acv. I am on day 4 of my bone broth fast, so will start adding dairy kefir to the diet (still taking the broth) for another 4 days. After that I'll go to the ibs diet (easy to digest, lightly cooked, mostly veggies) I'm doing this for my ibs, but it's too soon to tell if it's doing anything. So, the plan is to continue as explained here and, when it comes, add the red yeast rice to the mix. I only bought 1 bottle, so a month's supply, that's why I wondered how long it takes to work. When I go to the dr in January, I plan to have another cholesterol test done to compare results to my work one. So, I have 5 weeks to improve. Wish me luck.

That is interesting, but I think I mentioned here or was it on a diabetes forum?? Well anyway, I am willing to take the Metformin if it that last resort for caring for myself at home. If I end up in the hospital then I'll have to let them give me whatever. I just have found natural ways of "fixing" a lot of issues. The fact that Metformin has a very good track record, which I can see in your link, and have heard from other believers, is reassuring should I have to resort to a drug.

It actually seems good to me that Life Extension makes what seems to be a reliable alternative for people. It made me sick for 2 weeks, or, it was my physical issues. I don't know for sure at this point. I even quit my supplements and just to try without even those to see if it is just my body is sick with Type 2, high cholesterol/triglycerides, hypo-thyroid issues in the past (maybe again now, can't get tested yet for that), and now added to the pile, is about of high blood pressure. It was 170 over I think it was 110, but I haven't been able to get the recording of that from the hospital. My regular doc has to request it and I will be telling him on Monday about my Friday trip to emergency. I do thank you for the information, it was sort of a surprise as I didn't know Life Extension made prescription drugs.

This was truly an interesting article, Ivy. I hadn't read it until this a.m. Thank you for the link. I started the Meformin again, after stopping it at 3 weeks in, because I had some stomach discomfort they do speak of in possible side-effects. A problem in my mind was, those are mentioned as side-effects for the Type 2 Diabetes I was diagnosed with 4 weeks ago now. I do love alternatives and have had many work for me, but I am not against conventional medicine either. I wish it could all be taught to MDs. When the best fix for an upset stomach or many other things is ACV, why should a drug be prescribed? I know the answer, BIG Pharma. Well, interestingly enough, I am getting my foods in-line now and no ill effects from the Metformin so I'll continue on it. I know people have different experiences, different opinions, and different levels of knowledge about health. I do have an open mind about it all, then I choose what is best working for me. It's my body, only I know what all goes on, I couldn't begin to list and tell about the many issues, little things many of them, but still very vigilant. Thank you again.

Wondering if you are still around, Blane?? I have found more and more info, but didn't look up your suggestions, but am now doing just that. Thank you, because I've been listening to Dr. Benjamin Bikman, Dr. Eric Berg, some of the Diet Doctor, and trying hard to read Lipid Lunacy. It's too technical for me I'm afraid but headed out to read your suggestions now as well. I'm becoming a believer in high, total cholesterol isn't the enemy, but rather the Triglyceride/HDL ratio. I admit I am lowering my dairy intake to see if I can "feel" safer with my numbers in the lipid profile I just got, but my Triglyceride/hdl ratio is excellent!

I'm just up for reading more studies that have been coming out for some time on this topic, and I haven't put my faith in conventional medicine for some time ;) Feedback from anyone is welcome as I remain open-minded, and, I do understand that if ACV works for you, don't "fix" it ;) I had to change my way of eating because of Type 2 Diabetes, and the fact that I have a 3rd degree AV Node block and am on my 3rd Pacemaker since 1997.

HI U ELLE, good for you. Suggest you read the new book out .......PEO SOLUTIONS. Fish oil is bad news Charlie, not an opinion, fact. The supplement industry is almost as bad as the Pharmaceutical folks. Before you respond, read the book. This book is just out and should receive the Pulitzer prize for medicine. This revelation is even more better than when the New Zealand doctors said that ulcers were caused by e-coli and were ridiculed for 10 years by their peers.

That is until they received the Pulitzer prize for medicine.

As the book says, medicine is not science, it is an opinion of folks who do the study and they all have a self serving agenda. It's a money thing.

What no one tells you is that high cholesterol can be associated with certain types of yeast. --among other possible causes.
Diet Changes:

- cut out all vegetable oils (including olive), minimize animal fats, use only low-fat dairy w/ no hormones or antibiotics/grass-fed, no fried foods. If fat is needed for cooking, use a small amount of butter (w/o hormones).

- buy all food fresh at farmer's markets & avoid packaged foods in stores; do more cooking at home.

- cut out white potatoes.

- eat more dark leafy greens, garlic, cruciferous vegetables; sweet potato, lentils, buckwheat, etc.

- include some fermented veggies (sauerkraut, hoarseradish, etc) in your diet which naturally contain "good bacteria".

- don't take vitamin pills unless you have to for a clear & convincing medical reason;

- minimize use of non-essential medications, as much as you safely can (consult your doc before making any changes).

- eat more fresh herbs and spices.

- eliminate alcohol; if you want to have something occasionally choose dry red wine or beer.

- eliminate coffee (raises cortisol).

- walk.

Niacin
Posted by Robert Henry (Ten Mile Tn.) on 08/26/2014

HI U GERTG, , , , , , , , , , , most MD's don't have a clue as to how to use flushing Niacin and as a result turn the patient off. They had rather you be on a statin drug anyway. First people flush at a different dosages. I always buy my supplement in 100 mg capsules so I can slowly build up to the dosage that just causes me to flush. I suspect that at 500 mg you were way high on your tolerance. I find that flushing near bedtime affects my sleep. The Naturopath who introduced me to this detox, said to start a short walk after taking the supplement as exercise aids in starting the flush.

I encourage you to start at 200 mg and take a morning walk. If you do not flush then go to 300mg the next day. You will soon find what works for you without a lot of hassle.

Hope this has been of some help.

Understanding Cholesterol Test Results
Posted by Prioris (Fl, Usa) on 01/29/2014

I can't say exactly what you need but for most people Nattokinase should be sufficient. I myself take both nattokinase and serrapeptase because CFIDS causes chronic blood coagulation. I found thru experimentation over time that that combination works for me the best. I can actually feel it working in me. I'd look into MK7 vitamin K2 also because that may help keep the arteries free of calcium build up. Take with meal.

Lumbrokinase has clinical research behind it but is more expensive. No studies will be done on Nattokinase because it would hurt the financial interests of many synthetic blood clot removal products. I found nattokinase very effective for arteries so never bothered with lumbrokinase. Enzymes in general help with biofilms and dissolving various things in the body also. I also take bromelaine which acts on biofilm also. The only thing I can think of that I would maybe avoid is using aspirin on a daily basis with them. You will be fine playing with serrapeptase also.

Take the enzymes on an empty stomach. I take my enzymes all together in morning and before bed when stomachg empty. If one takes nattokinase once a day, they say the best time is before bed since blood has tendency to coagulate more when you lie horizontal. probably why many people have heart attacks in their sleep.

Understanding Cholesterol Jumps
Posted by Prioris (Fl, Usa) on 01/03/2014

The reason people want to lower cholesterol is because of heart disease. People should be aware that medical studies concluded many years ago that there is no correlation between heart disease and cholesterol. Same with salt. People with low cholesterol die from heart disease at the same rate as people with high cholesterol.

Heart disease (and stroke) comes down to one thing - cleaning your arteries. You use fibrolytic enzymes like nattokinase and serrapeptase for that. You take them on emnpty stomach. They protect you from strokes and heart attacks. Cholesterol is there to protect you. If it wasn't for that, you'd be dead. Do the research. Even the so called "bad" cholesterol is turning out to be good. Stop worrying about cholesterol and focus on cleaning your arteries.

For your sciatica - Take a form of highly absorb-able Hyaluronic Acid on empty stomach. I know the Biocell formula works. This will replenish your synovial fluid.

Statins
Posted by Prioris (Fl) on 11/07/2013

Statin drugs will damage ones health over the long term.

High cholesterol is a manufactured health problem. It makes no sense why you should be concerned about cholesterol. High cholesterol may be a tip off that you have blood coagulation problems. I have had cholesterol near the 400 range for over 50 years. I'm not the least bit concerned about it because I know it is an imaginary problem.

Assume that you have mycoplasma, you could try erythromicin, borax and other things.

You would also have blood coagulation problems. I would strongly suggest fibrolytic enzymes like nattokinase and serrapeptase since it addresses the core problem. Experiment to see what combination is the best.

You do not need to take the Red Rice since it isn't addressing the core problems.

You talk about oxidative damage then why not take astaxanthin. it is a very powerful anti-oxidant. Take at least 8-12 mg per day

Cholesterol Testing

I am 59 years old female and you would think a doctor would check for plaque in the arteries or do that new test for plaque instead of many invasive tests. I have high blood pressure and taking meds and some other alternative things but doctors never want to get at the root of it.. It could be so many things but why not rule out some things and all. They do blood work but never finding root causes. I am assuming its to sell medication.. what are your thoughts?? Thank YOU.

Red Yeast Rice
Posted by Lorene A (Montgomery, Tx) on 10/01/2013

WARNING!

RED YEAST RICE, according to research findings from Dr. Mercola (internet), RYRice is a STATIN drug. We were very surprised and were using as this information was not divulged. It is Lovastatin (Mevacor and Altocor). So if you believe you are taking a natural supplement - Surprise! Provided your tests after statin drugs were good, you are better off to NOT take anything for cholesterol, eat heallthy and take lots of vitamins. Statins are a danger to the liver, as we all know. Same goes for Red Yeast Rice. Manufacturers are very clever hiding the statin facts. Also if the RYR contains citrinin, it is dangerous. Should be removed. Again that information not found on most supplements on the market. Good cholesterol is one of our best friends and is vital componet of every cell membrane. Eat healthy to maintain good cholesterol levels. Love this site - very beneficial. I go no where else to get natural remedies. Wonderful site!

Prioris: Good advise. If I may back up a step to say that the damage that occurs to arteries in the first place is usually by INFLAMMATION. Inflammation, then scarring, then cholesterol plaques, then heart attacks.

Turmeric, Pineapple, and Omega 3's to treat the inflammation. Pine Bark and Grapeseed Extracts are powerful artery protectors.

Migs: Thanx for posting your success story. I suppose that ACV works in several ways to accomplish this feat of lowering cholesterol. One, it buffers excess acid production (acidosis severely depletes enzymes). Two, stimulation of digestion (especially the bilary). Three, ACV kills Pathogens like Candida. Four, it stimulates metabolism (revs up the krebs cycle).

Re: Detoxing High Fructose Corn Syrup From Body

Cheryl, the fructose that your body doesn't burn during digestion, is converted into triglycerides and stored in fat tissue; this is why high fructose corn syrup can cause obesity.

To remove the triglycerides take lots of B vitamins. B-100 2 or 3 times daily. To further enhance energy production you can add any or all these nutrients: DMG, CoQ10, ALA. To increase thermogenesis, use caffeinated coffee or tea; along with some cardio, this should burn those stubborn fats.

Hi Susan...I used to be able to buy red yeast rice when I was living in Luzon in the Philippines but have since moved to Cebu. There are also several other effective ways to help reduce high cholesterol. Here is a short list of recommendations for you:

* Take Ted's protocol to reduce high cholesterol.

* Take Chanca piedra(CP) tea on its own three times a day or supplement CP capsules(500mg) three times a day with meals. Chanca piedra safely lowers cholesterol, lowers blood pressure, reduces blood sugar, protects the liver and does so much more for your health.

* Take niacin (100mgs to 500mgs three times a day always with meals). If the niacin flush is too much for you then just reduce the dosage. Niacin acts to unclump sticky blood(it does this electrically) to help reduce blood pressure safely.

And here's a video by Dr Joel Wallach on the causes and cure for high cholesterol problems:

Cholesterol can easily be lowered, in fact your body will normalize all functions if you just transition to a plant based lifestyle and alkalize to 7.365. Cheating sets you back a long way so no cheating. The food must be seasoned properly or it won't taste good and taste is the attraction to liking the food of course. We are health ministers and we know what it takes to be healthy. Be patient you didn't get that way overnight and it won't go away over night. But it will go away if it isn't normal.

I'm writing about the apple cider and garlic healing. I am a person that believes a lot in natural healing this year 2009 I'm getting into it more. I learned that natural healing can help you without a lot of side affects because it's all natural. No drugs. I'm now 56 years old I've used natural remedies all down through the years

Now here is one of my natural garlic and bread remedies that works for me to get your High cholesterol and blood pressure
down.

4-cloves of garlic
2-slices of bread
1-full glass of water

cut up the 4 cloves put between the bread to make a sandwich. Eat the sandwich and drink the water as you eat just like any other sandwich. Eat the whole sandwich, and drink the whole glass of water. If you feel like you need more water you may drink more water because the garlic is a little tingy.

This remedy always work for me for high blood pressure and High Cholestrol. Try It, it also gives me energy.

I read this book about Vermont Folk medicine and it talked about drinking ACV, honey and water and how it pretty much helps with everything. So I figured I would give it a shot, cuz it can't hurt. And now I mix a pitcher of it and me and the kids drink it. I just had my cholesterol checked and it lowered 30 points in a year. I wasn't even worried about my cholesterol. We refer to the mixture as honey drink and it makes a difference for me feeling hot and cold, having energy, rarely getting sick. I am totally sold and now buy honey and ACV in bulk. And I recommend it to everyone.

After 2 days of testing in the hospital it was concluded that my cholesterol was borderline high. My Total Cholesterol was 239. I was told to take aspirin and given a prescription for some other popular medication, neither of which i took. I came across your site doing some research on natural remedies and now I am truly amazed at how ACV has working for me in only 7 weeks. My cholesterol came down from 239 to 175. I started taking 2Tbs mixed with either cranberry or grape juice in the morning and the same at night. The juice helps with the bitter taste of the Vinegar. I have had very little change in my diet, except for the fact that i no longer eat eggs! I have, however increased my activity to working out at least 3x's week. I am going to carefully watch my cholesterol and continue to drink the ACV and go back to my doctor in 2 months for another test.

My cholestrol has been high my entire adult life. I come from it naturally in a family that has the same problem. I have been put on just about every medicine that has come out without success. I have tried garlic and a low fat diet but have had no success with that either. I came across this page while researching migrane remedies and thought that I would give it a try. I started taking 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar in a glass of warm water once a day about a year ago. My cholestrol has always measured around the 254 mark and my triglycrides had always been well over 300. This past January my blood draw came back with very surprising results. My cholestrol was 162 and triglycrides were 163. I made the nurse calling me double check the name on the report. I have continued this therapy hoping that it wasn't a fluke. I will know in August when I have my next blood draw. I'm hoping for even better results. I also was able to stay 100% healthy this past year. With so much illness in a very close office setting I was able to not use one sick day while most of my co-workers were off at least one day if not more. It has not produced any weight loss benefits but I'm only 140 lbs to start with so I'm not so concerned with that as I was with the cholestrol results. I have passed this on to some friends that are suffering from the same thing. I'm waiting to hear their results.
