Red Yeast Rice

Hi,

So three months ago, I found out I have a high total cholesterol of 229. My LDL was 165. I am 51 and I am active only as a mom and one who does pilates four days a week. I call myself a vegan slash pescatarian slash vegetarian low on the dairy though slash turkey or chicken maybe once every two week. Put it like this people were shocked when i told them i had high cholesterol. Anywho my nurse practitioner decided to have me tested for this genetic disorder. My brother actually has the genetic disorder that makes his cholesterol high so he's on statins. Well i refuse to get on that medication because i understand the side effects are not good but to each his own and no judgment here. Not at all. My nurse practitioner put me on fish oil and red rice yeast to treat my high cholesterol but check this out before being put on red rice yeast my a1c was good. It was 5.4, but after three months on red rice yeast my a1c which has never been high shot up three points 5.7. I am wondering if this red rice yeast caused my a1c to rise. I heard prescription statins do the same thing. I meet with my practitioner this week and will ask her if this is a side effect of red rice yeast. If it is i want to get off. I have already started adding more carido to my exercise routine and cut those carbs out i know are not good for me but they taste so good even if theyre organic and used with good ingredients. Okay so what are your thoughts on red rice yeast and the possibility they elevate your a1c? I have a gut feeling it has increased my a1c. Also, my three month check up my total cholesterol went down from 229 to 209. My LDL went down from 165 to 140. So it appears it is working but I also believe changing my diet and doing intermittent fasting 16:8 has helped too. I appreciate any comments and i look forward to reading them. Bye

Dietary Changes

Hi there!

A few years ago, my husband had an abnormal cardiac calcium score and a less than ideal cholesterol reading. His doctor gave him the option of statins or a gluten free, vegan diet. He reluctantly chose the diet.

It worked. He lost weight and got his cholesterol down dramatically.

Over time we put fish and chicken into his diet. (Tilapia, salmon, and boneless, skinless chicken.) He also eats an occasional sweet but is very moderate about it. He uses Erythritol and oat milk in his coffee.

He had bloodwork done this week. We were thrilled that fish and chicken added to his gf plant-based diet have only improved his numbers. His good cholesterol went up a bit and the bad is in a very good range. His total cholesterol is 131.

Six months ago, we invested in a Blackstone Grill. That thing is life changing. Really. My go to meal is fish or chicken bowls. I cook the chicken or fish and an onion, sometimes a jalapeno, potato or carrots on the Blackstone, season it well with salt, pepper, and garlic, and serve it over brown or white rice. I use some olive oil on the grill. We never get tired of this meal. It also makes clean up easier and I don't make much mess in the kitchen.

My husband eats a lot of hummus on sesame crackers or raw carrots with guacamole for a snack. If he eats breakfast, its oatmeal. I make a Thai curry every weekend and we have burritos and fish tacos often; its a go-to meal when my kids and grandkids come over.

Interestingly, his hemoglobin and hematocrit numbers are at the high end of normal. Apparently, you can get plenty of iron without eating red meat or eggs. His iron level has always been high normal on a red meat diet, on a vegan diet, on his current diet. He doesn't eat much in the way of leafy greens either.

Since I have Alpha Gal and some food allergies, a mostly gf, plant-based diet with fish and chicken has been my diet for many years. Cooking got easier with his dietary changes. I fix burgers or sausage and eggs for my kids sometimes, but they do love the Blackstone bowls, too.

Anyway, this is all anecdotal, but I am sharing it in case it would help or encourage someone else!

Berberine
Posted by Art (California) on 06/14/2023 2891 posts

Denise E,

Although studies do show that berberine has cholesterol lowering effects and as being good for diabetics to help maintain healthier glucose levels among many other benefits, I do not consider it to be a potent anti cholesterol supplement based on my experience. If you cholesterol is significantly high, berberine may not be potent enough to get it low enough, but it wouldn't hurt to try it and it will help with lowering glucose levels.

For the purpose of lowering cholesterol, I have had good results using two level full tablespoons of soy lecithin granules each day. I use a 4 ounce glass of water and dump the granules in it and drink it down right away in one go with no mixing. Others put it into their smoothies, or yogurt.

I have no recommendation for a brand of berberine as I have used several and they were all effective. I think the divided dose would be important for optimal effect.

Hi Art, or anyone reading,

I never got the Lecithin, no good reason, and Jan 20,2021 I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. Now I've had to quit some things, and have gone lower than low carbs, almost zero. My blood sugar is dropping a little after a month, no Meformin for me, but my cholesterol and Trygliserides are high. Cholestrol has stayed at the 300,330(last lab). Of course they wanted me to take a Lepitor, did that last night for the first and last time. My ears (Tinnitus) are insanely spiked to where I just can't take another of those pills. I'm getting on the Lecithin as soon as Amazon can get it sent to me. I don't know what brand to look for but I do take some good supplements from LIfe Extension, like my B Complex. I also am to take D3 and that has no side effects on me I know of.

Thanks to everyone that's posting on this. My doctor is a precious man, very young, and really seems to care about folks but I can't trust the drugs ;(

Hi PCL.

You've got a few health issues going on at the same time.

The lecithin you started today should help reduce your LDL and VLDL cholesterol very significantly as well as triglycerides. My friends who have used it took 2 tablespoons per day initially as a loading dose and then switched down to 1 tablespoon per day as a maintenance dose. Nine tablespoons a day is a lot by any standard and I would say way too much. You are a fairly small person so you may find that a tablespoon is more than adequate for you and in time and with testing, you may find you can go with a slightly lower dose to maintain benefit, but that will be trial and error on your part. Lecithin can be helpful with fatty liver disease if that happens to be a health issue you are having. One small study suggested that a component of lecithin can possibly improve insulin sensitivity making it useful in diabetes. Lecithin is an emulsifier so it can help breakdown fats which may also be useful in diabetes, but the studies are lacking to discuss this benefit in diabetes.

One friend who is using lecithin successfully adds it to her morning smoothie and said she feels it improves the flavor of her smoothie.

On a somewhat related note, Zinc and Selenium are usually helpful if hypothyroidism is an issue, especially zinc. What condition is your hair in?

When people say their cholesterol is too high, the first question would be what is too high? Our bodies need cholesterol and if it gets too low, people have a higher risk of cancer. I want to make sure my cholesterol is around 200- 225. Don't listen to FDA. Cholesterol is NOT your enemy. The person that recommended a low fat diet, I bring into question. Read the book The Cholesterol myth.

Hi Wendy, you don't say how old you are so this may not be relevant, but there was a good double blind trial done at the University of Paris some years ago on women over 54. It ran for some years and they discovered to their surprise that those with the highest cholesterol of any kind survived acute heart attacks whereas those with low cholesterol didn't! When I asked my consultant what she thought of the results, ( I have high cholesterol), she said she knew the trial and agreed it was correct and then couldn't understand why I didn't want statins! I fit the age category. There are several good books out there including Dr Uffe Ravnskov ' Ignore the awkward' and ' Fat and cholesterol are good for you' etc. I believe he's had death threats so he can't possibly be saying anytHing of merit now, can he? ;-). When Ancel Keys first came up with the theory that high cholesterol was linked to heart attacks etc in the 1950's, he was laughed out of court. He wanted to do a trial to prove his theory using people from 26 countries, but only 6 fitted the criteria he needed to prove the point, and lots of other factors were ignored. However, Ancel Keys 'research' is still the corner stone for all those news reports we get frightening us into taking statins! So it's really wonderful to have this site and a few really dedicated investigative journalists out there too.

Cholesterol-Reducing Compounds Found in Citrus Peels

By Alfredo Flores September 7,2005 source: https://www.ars.usda.gov/news-events/news/research-news/2005/cholesterol-reducing-compounds-found-in-citrus/

An ongoing search for profitable new uses for food-processing byproducts has led Agricultural Research Service (ARS) scientists to focus on citrus waste. They've recently learned that a compound found in orange oil decreases blood serum levels of the protein responsible for low-density lipoprotein (LDL) that's a major cholesterol carrier.

Chemist John A. Manthey, at the ARS Citrus and Subtropical Products Research Laboratory in Winter Haven, Fla., has done extensive research on flavonoids in citrus peel byproducts. He has focused on the polymethoxylated flavones, or PMFs, which typically occur at very high concentrations in the oil that's in orange peel residue.

Manthey's research has shown that the PMFs decrease blood serum levels of apoprotein B, the structural protein of LDL cholesterol. Too much circulating LDL cholesterol can slowly lead to atherosclerosis, clogged arteries and eventual heart attacks and strokes. These problems are accelerated by chronic, low-grade inflammation in the blood vessels.

The original collaboration between ARS and KGK Synergize involved studies of the anticancer properties of citrus PMFs, but it subsequently expanded into in vitro investigations of the abilities of PMFs to lower LDL-cholesterol in animals.

Read more about the research in the September issue of Agricultural Research magazine 2005.

Protecting yourself against heart disease requires far more than just simply lowering your cholesterol levels. In fact, 50 percent of the people who are hospitalized with heart attacks have normal cholesterol levels, and 25 percent of people who develop premature heart disease have no traditional risk factors at all. Maybe elevated cholesterol isn't the real cause of heart disease in the first place.

Trillions of dollars are spent on cholesterol lowering drugs (statins) and heart disease is still the leading cause of death. What is wrong with this picture?

It's important to assess a determination of "high cholesterol" before you decide to do something about it. Look at the lipid panel yourself and check to make sure your HDL (good cholesterol) isn't so high that it is throwing off the total cholesterol numbers. Many years ago, the doctor told me that my total cholesterol would always look high because my HDL is so very high. That has proven over and over again to be the case. If you want to use your lipid panel to check for your risk of heart disease due to high cholesterol, enter your numbers, age, etc, at this Univ. of Wisconsin website

Influence of Soy Lecithin Administration on Hypercholesterolemia

Note: Hypercholesterolemia; is a condition characterized by high levels of cholesterol in the blood. Cholesterol is a fatty substance that plays an essential role in cell membranes, but excessive amounts can accumulate in the arteries and increase the risk of cardiovascular diseases.

Source: https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC3065734/

Abstract

Recent studies suggest that lecithin-rich diet can modify cholesterol homeostasis and hepatic lipoprotein metabolism. Considering the phytotherapeutic impact of lecithin, this work hypothesizes that lecithin administration in hypercholesterolemic patients may reduce cholesterol concentrations by increasing biliary secretion. Total cholesterol and LDL were evaluated after soy lecithin administration in hypercholesterolemic patients. One soy lecithin capsule (500 mg/RP-Sherer) was administrated daily. One-two months before the treatment beginning, blood samples were collected for total lipids and cholesterol fractions analysis. The results showed a reduction of 40.66% and 42.00% in total cholesterol and of 42.05% and 56.15% in LDL cholesterol after treatment for one and two months, respectively. A significant reduction in total cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol concentrations was observed during the first month of treatment, suggesting that the administration of soy lecithin daily may be used as a supplemental treatment in hypercholesterolemia.

Hi PCL,

Good on you for reconsidering about statins.

Here are a few reasons why statins may not be the best choice.

1. Statins are known to cause muscle pain, liver damage, increased blood sugar and neurological side effects as discussed here:

https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/high-blood-cholesterol/in-depth/statin-side-effects/art-20046013

2. Statins have caused memory loss in some people as discussed here:

https://www.health.harvard.edu/cholesterol/new-findings-on-statin-memory-loss-link

3. Statins can cause tendon damage or rupture as reported in the following study link:

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3666488/#

On the other hand, "Soy Lecithin" lowers cholesterol and triglycerides as shown in the following study:

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3065734/

It is worth noting that I have not as yet been able to find other cholesterol studies for other forms of lecithin such as sunflower lecithin and my experience is that "granular soy lecithin" has been effective for several friends who have used it.

WARNING!

Please read the article “The Cholesterol Myth That Is Harming Your Health” on Dr. Mercola's site (Google will find it). What an eye opener! It explains why cholesterol lowering drugs are so dangerous, why we need cholesterol, and why it might be high (repairing damage done by arterial inflammation). Taking ACV should help lowering the inflammation and with it most probably the cholesterol, but do not give up healthy fats, including eggs. Be well!

I started taking 1000 mg of niacinamide, which is vitamin B3, to help me get to sleep. When I went in for my annual check up with the doctor, my cholesterol actually went too low and she told me to lower my dose to raise my cholesterol. It took about 6 months of taking it. Also, niacinamide doesn't make you flush like niacin, and it still worked to lower cholesterol. The only side effect is it makes you really sleepy, so take it before bed.

DONNA,,,,,,,, ORH here and good advice. Md's prescribe flushing Niacin Rx and that is 500 mg, far too high to start. So people forget that program. To get 100mg, you must get a supplement. Increase dosage as you stop flushing. The 9-11 first responders ended up taking thousands of mg and in a sauna to get rid of their toxins. Their towels were dark from what was excreted during the flush. Tom Cruise installed and paid for that protocol because the medical folks had no clue.

Cholesterol Testing
Posted by Dave (Fountain Inn, Sc) on 11/02/2013

Hello Beth from Atlanta,

Re: your concern about cholesterol

Good News! The "medical/drug industry" has propogated a myth about cholesterol. The FACT is that cholesterol is absolutely necessary for health in the human body. The Good News is that you do not have to be concerned about cholesterol levels. In fact, if you want to think of it this way, if the Doc tells you that you have "hight cholesterol" just respond..."That's GOOD. Got to have that cholesterol. Both HDL and LDL. High cholesterol is good for me."

The truth is:

Cholesterol is made by the liver and transported in "shuttles" out of the liver (protein suttles) called LDL and after the body uses the cholesterol which was carried by the LDL protein box cars for proper body functioning (especially the brain needs cholesterol) then HDL shuttles carry the used cholesterol back to the liver for reprocessing.

The test that is performed on us by the industry ... the test that gives us cholesterol levels is a measurement not of the cholesterol level in our body but of the "shuttles"....and 95 percent of the folks who just read that think I must be mistaken:

So here is the youtube to read the MOST informative 9 minute analysis of the truth I've come across. Google: "Dr. Rosedale cholesterol youtube" and you'll find his 9 minute video.

Here is one of the points in this amazing video: The tests for cholesterol given to us is not measuring cholesterol but rather the "shuttles" which are not the cholesterol itself. The cholesterol tests are giving you "shuttle" reading, not the cholesterol/fat reading. Really....look at the Rosedale video.

There is some argument that very small cholesterol (which is not measured by 99 percent of all cholesterol tests) could be a source in "sticking" to the "gap junction" in the lining of the arteries thereby oxydizing and inflaming to produce ultimately blockage/plaque. But the real culprit is not the small ldl, says Dr. Rosedale, (overcome by proper diet of good raw foods) ... the real culprit is SUGAR ... good old deadly white sugar.

The effort, therefore, to make people afraid of LDL levels is totally misplaced...we MUST have LDL suttles to carry cholesterol throughout our bodies...I say MUST have it...or we will see a collapse of the body system. The rise in dementia in the last twenty years is likely due to a rise in the use of statin drugs.

Statin drugs keep the liver from producting cholesterol; and remember cholesterol is good for us. The whole effort to 1. Measure cholesterol is at best a misunderstanding of what is actually being measured (remember the cholesterol reading is NOT a cholesterol reading...it is a "shuttle" reading...LDL and HDL are NOT cholesterols) and 2. the body must have cholesterol to function. We will die without cholesterol.

So how do we keep the blockages from taking place? Isn't the probem fats? No...

Well, remember, the biggest culprit is ...again-sugar. So break the sugar habit and the sugar related cravings.

I thought I'd never get rid of the sugar cravings until I understood that the hypothalymus is the key to telling the body what to do relative to metabolism; In one day I ended my cravings. I used in the morning on an egg, olive oil and no sugar at all in the morning. For lunch I eat anything but with a teaspoon of olive oil somewhere in the mix and again at night a good oil, such as grape seed oil. No sugar at night. The next day you'll find your cravings are gone. Repeat the "good oil" use every day. The good oil can be used on anything of course; not just on an egg. I usually drizzle a tablespoon of olive oil on a third piece of whole wheat bread and I've found I'm not hungry until lunch...no cravings. The hypothalymus will respond by not using the easy to metabolize sugar and instead will be told to use oils (like my body fat) instead. Cravings end.

So please look at the "Dr. Rosedale youtube" video. Only nine minutes and you will go away wondering how so many "smart" folks in the medical industry could be so incorrect about such a fundamental issue.

Now next in the "how to keep plaque from forming" analysis: God designed us to consume foods that give us natural Vitamin E...not synthetic E...and the E has the effect of making sure the lining of arteries and veins are not tacky, which allows plaque formation if they are sticky. Even our blood can get think and sticky and E keeps that from happening. So if I get enough E, then the blood is thinned and not thick. Thus I do not need asprin. God made E to do that for us. And even if we get plaque formation, the E keeps inflamation at a minimum because E is an anti oxident. E also assists in oxygen carrying and thus helps all muscles (heart) to stay healthy. (Two big issues in cardio health: Plaque formation and oxygen delivery. A problem with either two can kill you.) I take 800 IUs daily of natural E. E has been milled out of most foods and soil depletion has taken it out of other sources; at least in the quantities we need. But at 800 IUs E is serving a theraputic function. That is, there is a longevity issue at high levels of E usage. So if you are not attempting such theraputic levels, a person should at least get 200 IUs daily. The natural E...NOT synthetic like you get at a drug store.

Try a teaspoon of organic ACV in every glass of water you drink. This is a great way to get your needed ACV every day. I've been doing this for years and when I'm someplace where organic isn't available, I feel badly deprived.

It's so easy, and it gives the water a flavor that once you become accustomed to it, you will look forward to drinking your water often throughout the day.

Hi Ruralady,

The only problem is nobody knows whether the sunflower lecithin works as well as the soy lecithin.

In 2023 and 2024 I suggested to 2 friends to take the soy lecithin for their high cholesterol and it worked well for both of them to bring their cholesterol into the normal range. This year I suggested the soy lecithin to another friend and she chose to use sunflower lecithin and while it did lower her cholesterol it was not close to the amount that the other two friends got with soy lecithin and no where near what the soy lecithin study showed. It may just be an individual variance, but it was much less of a lowering effect in the third friend who used sunflower lecithin.

Hello Art, good to find your post.

I got my Lecithin. It sure doesn't taste bad at all, and I could just chew it up in my mouth if I had to ;) I dissolved a tbsp of the granules in my decaf Green Tea (which I like to chill to make it ice-tea) I don't notice any difference in taste with that. It takes just a little time, maybe 15 min. to dissolve in the cold tea but people can use a blender to speed up the process if need be. I read it's good to do it for about 30 min. before I eat so am doing it that way. I hope it works, and I don't know if I should do the 3 tbsp, 3 x a day. I don't see anywhere you mention how much you used per day? I'll just keep taking some each day. I didn't get my Lecithin until this afternoon in the mail, so it has nothing to do with what happened to me this a.m. I have Type 2 diabetes just diagnosed Jan 20.

I cut my carbs way back to I think below 30g a day, I was so concerned about having something like Diabetes. Anyway, yesterday got to talk to a dietician, and leary of them as well but I listened. She encouraged me to eat more carbs, 30g per meal say. So I started that today. But from 6 a.m. to 9:15 I felt so good and healthy, lots of energy, and for the first time in weeks, no headache on awakening.

Then at 9:15 or so, I got the bad shakes, like the hypoglycemic thing I got as a kid when I didn't eat soon enough. Then a headache that didn't feel like any headache I'd ever had, so really clueless. I don't do this unless I know something is way wrong, I went to the emergency room, and all I got done was my blood pressure, temperature, checking stuff.

My blood pressure for the first time I know of in 68 years was 170/??, I can't remember the bottom number but it might have been 120, or not. I was just so upset because the waiting room was full, the inner exam rooms were full, sick people surrounding me, and I didn't stay as my head stopped hurting and I figured I wouldn't be seen anyway.

I plan to contact the clinic tomorrow and ask about my blood pressure, they are open on Saturdays. If this crazy new way of eating, high cholesterol, and of course high triglycerides are the cause of now, High Blood pressure, I can only hope I can find an answer for that here too. I'm 5'2" and right at 129, exercise regularly walking, never ate a whole lot of carbs and all this. Kind of overwhelming, but I trust alternative medicines/home-remedies over drugs and I won't give up. Thanks for your's and everyone's input on the site,

All of my cholesterol levels were bad but then improved an average of over 30% by eating a low carb diet. They're all back down in the healthy range. I did not cut down on fats at all, just carbs. I bought a glucose meter and learned how to eat so that my blood sugar stayed under 110 after meals (it usually peaks around 1 1/2 hours after a meal.) I eat about 15 grams of carbs at each meal and I make sure I eat a good portion of protein first to balance it. Yeah, it was some getting used to, but it's not problem now and I don't have any carb cravings or anything. I also took fish oil and drank matcha tea, but I don't think it would have been such a dramatic difference without cutting the carbs. My doc was impressed when he saw the numbers. He said, "What did you do?" :)

Niacin

I am happy to report that 1000-1500 milligrams of niacin daily drastically reduced my high triglycerides in just under four months. I am a 41 year old male who was diagnosed with high triglycerides back at end of October 2015. My blood test revealed my triglyceride level was 449 mg/dl (optimal reference range is below 150 mg/dl) which was due in part to being to being overweight, which was a result of poor dietary habits and too much alcohol. Fast forward to February 2016, along with a healthy diet and exercise and the crucial inclusion of daily niacin intake, my triglycerides dropped 80% to 87 mg/dl. I lost about 40lbs in that time but I know that the rapid lowering of my triglyceride level was not only due to weight loss but the niacin which is well-documented for its effect on high triglycerides and cholesterol. Simply stated niacin works.

My cholesterol has always been high. Cholesterol Total 256; HDL 142; LDL 107 and Triglyceride 35.

I am not taking any medication, but will try the organic apple cider vinegar in some warm water early in the morning. Hope it will lower my numbers.

I am 75 years old, work full time, exercise three times a week and eat a very healthy diet but love a glass of good red wine. I wonder whether I have to cut that out.

I agree that ACV works well at cholesterol/LDL reduction. It does not, repeat Does NOT raise cholesterol or deplete HDLs.

High Cholesterol Readings
Posted by Sam (Florida) on 06/07/2014

1) Unless your Chol. is over 300, no need to worry if ALL your ratios are within normal range.

2) Know your LP(a) level. If elevated, nothing you do will lower it, as it is a whole different ball game. LP(a) role is not known yet. It is produced in liver and destroyed in kidneys. Check your kidneys. People with elevated LP(a) have a chance to live to 100(and age slowly), as well as have increased risk of CVD. That is why scientists don't understand it.

3)Worried or concerned? Have PLAC test done. Can be done in any private lab without requisition. Cost under $100.

50% of heart attacks and ischemic strokes occur in patients with normal cholesterol.

The PLAC Test measures Lp-PLA2, an enzyme that, when elevated, indicates arterial inflammation, making heart attack or stroke more likely.

All we have to fear is fear itself.

On 25th May 2012, my overall cholesterol reading was 6.9, which is high. I decided to try organic apple cider vinegar to lower it. For the last year I have daily had a table spoon of high quality organic pure apple cider vinegar diluted with water in a large mug. I drank this once a day, straight after a breakfast of cold porridge, honey and soya milk. Initially it was hard to drink as it was a bit acidic tasting, but now I quite like it. Occasionally I would have it later in the day after a different meal, but it was mainly first thing in the morning.

At end of May 2013, my cholesterol had reduced to 4.1! I was amazed by this. There were no other changes to my lifestyle except sticking to only having any refined sugar (chocolate, sweets, cakes etc) every other day, rather than almost every day. Sometimes in the last year I would go 3/4 days with no refined sugar, but would have natural sugar via fruit. This is also quite a big change, but I am sure it's the vinegar that's the main cause of the massive reduction as I have always had some refined sugar in my diet.
