Water
Posted by Peter (Bangkok, Thailand) on 04/04/2012

For the ones that are suffering from bad breath, please try this out! First thing every morning before u brush your teeth, try drinking 640 ml. of water. After 45 mins. you are allowed to eat something. This might not help immediately, just give it a try for couple of days if you see any improvement. Good luck everyone.

I got rid of white coating at the back of the tongue, I made three changes first off I started drinking lemon water approximately 1 lemon a day I wound have half in the morning half at night. Next I started taking chlorophyll tablets, just one per day. Then one day I decided to gargle some strong vodka for around three minutes it burnt alot but after I brushed that day I didn't have anymore white coating and I didn't have to do it again as it did not come back again. Thanks to that and I guess the chlorophyll my breath has been fresh.

Hi Flori, did you have the bad smells coming out of your nose is why you started the change or was it just the white coating of the tongue? What vodka did you use? How long have you made this change to know it is not temporary? When I say temporary I mean like a couple of hours, if it last the whole day and then some then that would be great. Please let me know. Thanks.

I had been using nasal rinse for the past 3 weeks and I have been noticing that my bad breath has been reducing. I encourage everyone who is having bad breath from nose and mouth, to do the nasal rinse and see. I'm on the 3rd week now and I can see a lot of improvement. I am doing it 2 times daily.

Hi Laura, just wondering, what toothpaste have you been using? On the profresh website they seem to be pushing the mouthwash, the toothpaste does not come in the starter kit but can be bought separately. Is it important to use the toothpaste too? Also, is there a specific uk account or just the profresh.com?

Hi Madya, I use to use Dr. Katz therabreath products and it worked really well for awhile until I started using the sprays that go up your nose. That's when I think I got an infection because that's when the really bad smells was coming out of my nose. I immediately stop using that product... That was 5 years ago, I tried everything to get rid of those horrible smells but nothing worked until I heard about the antibiotic/penicillin Augmentin. After taking that I got it down to BB smell. Then I tried using natural remedies to get rid of that smell some worked briefly!

Then I came across this website and read all things people were trying. I decided to try the HP last week... YAY! ... It worked really well... That smell is gone. I haven't used HP for a few days and still the smell is gone... I also had to change my diet... No meat for awhile. I'm so thankful for this site because so many of use are suffering from this problem and desparately looking for safe solutions.

The Streptococcus salivarius probiotic bacteria is the number one dragon slayer in the ranks of bad breath remedies. This oral probiotic replaces the bacteria in your mouth with the desirable Streptococcus salivarius K12 bacteria.

Hello, I recently stumbled upon this website and I have to say it is a god send for me, so much information about natural cures, a Big Thank You to all the posts, keep it up, you don't realise how many people your helping.

The question I'd like to ask is I recently started using Apple Cider Vinegar as a mouthwash and every time this brown speckles, sometimes like thick mucous thing (sorry only way I can think of describing it) comes out, anyone know what it is?

I recently read that some lemon or lime juice with 3x rose water, so 1/4 lemon juice, 3/4 rose water is very good for bad breath elimination, it kills all the bad bacteria and it makes your breath smell fresh, I read it in a herbal book but never tried it myself, so anyone that does, let me know if it works.

I'd greatly appreciate if someone can answer my question for me.

Thank you and keep up the good work.

I suffered from halitosis for 20 years. It is intermittent due to my sinusitis and post nasal drips. Everytime I have symptoms like asthma and cough I usually consult our employee health department, luckily Im working in government hospital I can easily get those medicines. However post nasal drips and halitosis persisted despite of antibiotics, this makes me frustrated. I started to research hydrogen peroxide with silver colloidal silver we used in the hospital to disinfect ICUs frequently touch items. We use this solution due to Acinotobacter baumanni which is hard to kill with other disinfectant. Our disinfectant is made in Belgium called Bioxeco. Furthermore I read alot of aricles that one sources of halitosis is due to anearobic bateria and H202 prevents the growth of it.

I dilluted the stock solution of 5%H2O2 with colloidal silver to 3% by (6ml of H202 solution 4 ml of distilled water = 3%).

Procedure to clean mouth with solution.

1, Brush teeth with branded toothpaste. Dont rinse.

2. Wash the toothbrush with tap water.

3. Pour 10 ml of 3% H2O2 (any volume will do) in cup.

3. Wet the toothbrush with H202 and start brushing teeth, palate of mouth and tongue for several minutes.

4. Use the remaining solution for rinsing.

My halitosis is gone after the brushing. I checked by licking the back of my hand and smell it. I dont smell anything unlike before it smells bad.

I also begun inhaling 3% H202 with colloidal silver for post nasal drips and sinusitis for 10 days now but post nasal drips did not stop. Furthermore I started drinking ACV using the recommended dosage published in this site for 4 days now and hoping to get a positive result after 2 weeks or more. I will soon update my situation.

Finally, I am so thankful for this site. It helps me alot and the anecdotal research is worthful to consider. I believe that some of the remedies may or may not work for others, but for sure those individuals that doesnt exerperience changes may have underlying serious conditions that must be given attention. Such as one person form Bangladesh having white patches in toungue. He must perform various serological procedures that may confirm his conditions. Maybe he can do his research by surfing ( white are the underlying disease with white patches on tongue)

You may not believe this but has it occurred to you that your bad breath and chronic sinusitis are both related to a common problem which is overgrowth of bad bacterias in your stomach and intestine ? I suspect that you may also have white tongue (please correct me if I am wrong). Tell me if you do because that would exactly describe my condition.

Consuming probiotics is not a solution because if these good bacterias have to always be replenished then that means there are probably more bad bacterias than good ones in your digesting system. I found that you need to FEED these good bacterias with green leafy vegetables so that they can reproduce in your body and thus avoid always having to replenish them in large numbers. Instead of Enzymes you should consider HCL Betaine because this is the natural way to KILL bad bacterias while enzymes would only speed up the breakdown of food.

I can say that I had a severe case of bad bacteria overgrowth and finally I am slowly recovering from this mainly due to a healthier vegetable diet and of course my favorite, HCL Betaine. Artificial Enzymes are very expensive and it is really the HCL in your stomach that is responsible for stimulating your Pancreas to produce enzymes. By consuming Betaine HCL you are increasing your stomach acid and thus increasing the ability for your pancreas to secrete more enzymes naturally. For those with gall bladder issues, Betaine HCL also stimulates the liver to produce larger quantities of Bile that over time would thin out the THICK bile that is responsible for producing stones. This would serve to protect your gall bladders from the risk of accumulating and releasing large quantities of stones in the bile duct that can risk being fatal to your pancreas by blocking enzyme production.

Hi Janne, I have had bad breath (smells like crap) for at least 30 years and carry mints, cardamom and anything else with me. I was diagnosed with severe IBS as a youngster but basically I think I have horrible bacterial gut flora and have lots of decaying matter in my gut. Gums are not great but are only a small part of the problem. Have severe bloating and flatulence (worse than most cows) as well. I have turned vegetarian but eating carbs (which I have to as am a veggie and eat no meat etc) makes things worse. What I do remember is that when I did Atkins diet a few years ago bloating and flatulence stopped. If I drink milk my stomach goes for a six! I am going to try the high dose probiotics as well as HP remedy. Any other suggestions will be most welcome.

I developed tonsillitis about 2 months ago, right as the seasons changed, and with it came 2 cases of tonsil stones. After the second one came out- which I gargled with HP to get out- I was left with breath that still smelled like I had them. I couldn't see any in the back of my throat and without a water pick I know I would never be able to get them out but I had to do something because I could not stand the smell. I brushed with my regular toothpaste and added a drop of Tea Tree Oil. My breath and teeth felt instantly fresher. Then I swirled my toothpaste in a mixture of water, sea salt, and a capful of ACV and brush my tongue with it. Then I gargled with the remaining mixture. My bad breath is gone. The oil keeps it fresh all day. To get back my pink tongue I oil pull when I first wake up. It also helps my breath and makes my teeth shiny.

Hae Gayle, regards. I am also suffering from chronic bad breath for 20years. Presently taking chlorophyll capsule (from American nutrition), magnesium citrate, and zinc gluconate 50 mg for nearly 20 days. I see 50% reduction in my bb but not curing fully, and it is on and off. Could u tell anything about why liquid chlorophyll works for somebody including u while chlorophyll cap (green powder) does not work fully for others? material is the same? do u think if I shift to liquid chlorophyll, it will work? Have any idea which among these three components working a bit for me? I am taking them daily. Thanks.

Hi Akbor, may be the liquid chkorophyll removes the acidity of the mouth especially the tongue because I understand that bacteria thrives in an acidic environment. And I think we should support this with a vegetarian diet ( more greens). I noticed that when I eat dairy food, the bb comes even if I take the chlorophyll.

Have you tried Oxyfresh or Breath RX?? Both are great products. Scraping the tongue if definitely a good idea... Go as farr back on the tongue as you possibly can. Another thing it could be is Tonsil Stones... (I suffer from these). They are little white/yellow waxy balls that come out of your tonsils and they smell TERRIBLE. Luckily for me I can see where the "stones'' are coming from and I try to keep the area cleaned out as much as possible. Sometimes if I push on the side of my tonsil with a Q-tip the little stone will pop right out! I am a dental Hygienist so these are the only things I can tell you to try! Especially if you have already gotten the gum disease under control. I hope this helps!! Oh and maybe try looking into your diet... Maybe its something that you are eating? Sharp cheeses give people bad breath.

I too suffered from BB for 5 years now. I just started taking Chlorophyll at night - 2 tblspn (it eliminates morning breath). In the morning after I brush my teeth I add 2 drops of Grapefruit seed extract to my toothbrush and brush my tongue. Within minutes I have to spit out the slimy saliva that I think contributes to BB. I have notice that it helps alot. But before trying this I took the antibiotic Augumentin for 10 days. It got rid of the horrible smells (like, rotten dead flesh, toilet water, feces, fart, etc. ) I had coming out of my nose. I guess it kill whatever bacteria I had. I heard that it's the only antibiotic/penicillin that will penetrate the bacteria cell membrane to get to the actual cause and kill it. So I hope this will help. I even carry the GSE with me in case... add a couple of drops to the back of my tongue.

Hello all. I too have been a culprit of BB. However, I have white hairy tongue which is elongation of filiform papillae which are the smallest papillae's on your tongue. These papillae trap bacteria and food debris and create chronic halitosis. I've tried everything, even went and extracted my wisdom teeth last week but still no change. I'm going to try liquid chlorophyll and I hope this will make a change. I'm 27 and I already have grey hair because everyday I stress about this problem. I think twice before opening my mouth and saying something. I brush twice a day and scrape my tongue and its been over a year and still no changes. This has def. caused a dent in my social life.

Deep Breathing

INFO.. GOOD FOR EVERYONE.

"Deep breathing saturates the blood with oxygen. These oxygen-laden red blood cells carry a negative electrical charge. The blood actually moves thru the body electrically. This is how and why blood is able to go thru the entire body so quickly.. Three quarts of blood goes through our capillaries every sixty seconds.. That is why it is important to breath deeply for 5 min. Every day."

I have the same experience: I completely eliminated sugar, wheat, corn, dairy, and excess meat from my diet about a week ago, and my partner told me last night that my breath had been bad for 2 days now. I didn't know until reading this, (and several other sites that mentioned low carb diet breath, ) that it may be from candida dying. Even though that is a good thing, the smell of it is not! Does anyone know how long this side-effect will last? How long will the bad breath persist from such a change in diet? Thanks

As I have posted here before, the only thing I tried against a coated tongue worked right away: a salt based toothpaste by Weleda (I am sure other brands will probably work just as well). It doesn't have fluoride and it is more natural than usual toothpastes. The coated tongue which I had for many years never came back again unless I drink water with ACV. I hope this helps...

Richard, are you currently taking any vitamin D supplements? My wife's coated tongue turned brown due to Vitamin D overload. Her coated tongue was due to a mouth candida infection. A Nystatin prescription cleared tongue up in a week, but she still follows the natural candida protocol to prevent recurrence.

However, I am gargling with Hydrogen Peroxide 3% twice daily and this has been clearing up the tongue. I use one cap full peroxide with 4-5 capfulls of water. Multiple Remedies
Posted by Allthigslovely (Norfolk, Ny) on 08/10/2010

Latina, Probiotics may not be working for your bad breath because the problem you have is not in your gut. It is possible that the problem that is causing your halitosis is periodontal disease. Mouthwashes and other treatments that would help your gut will not solve this problem. The best place to start will be at your dentist and get evaluated for gum disease. Get the recommended treatment and then you can use herbal or natural remedies to maintain your gum health after that. Your body will thank you for it. There is a great deal of information that you will need to have about this but that is where you should start to fix your halitosis problem.

Chew on coffee bean for bad breath. It really does works and works better than breath mints. I used to carry mints in my purse, now I carry coffee bean with me. A friend of mine from Ethiopia told me about this. She said that coffee bean even works on garlic breath. So I tried it and she was right.

Coffee Bean
Posted by Walter (Hoffman Estates, Il) on 01/22/2012

I agree that it will help improve the breath. The problem with the coffee bean though is that it is not to be consumed. That's why it's filtered for the essence only. A nurse that we've known to carry these at work and chew on died of a liver cancer. You'd be better off looking for mints. Kind regards to this site's - haven sent sharing and caring community.

I think she is talking about the roasted coffee beans. You can chew them with no problem. Not all cultures filter their coffee. Expresso is made from finely ground roasted coffee. Strong coffee simply mean more of the beans are dissolved in the water.

Baking soda is a neutralizer. It neutralizes the bacteria (lactobicculis and streptococcus ) that causes bad breathe, caries, and gum disease. Brushing your teeth with baking soda and salt with a balance diet will help you stay out of the dental chair. It also will whiten your teeth.

I have also suffered from BB for many years, I read these posts on a regular basis, I believe my problem is candida albicans, therefore I recommend you try the probiotics, antibiotics, caprylic acid and pau d arco, oil of oregano, and digestive enzymes, my BB is not caused by anything in my mouth its systemic, I do use baking soda, and peroxide, and Neem toothpaste and mouthwash, I never use any market toothpaste or mouthwash, they tend to dry my mouthout. After moving to a different country, I´ve been suffering with a horrible breath that plagued my life. I went to several dentists and doctors, and they seem clueless on what to do. Tried several mouthwashes and toothpastes, natural supplements, changes in diet. No relief. I remember I tried baking soda, but it became immediately worse, so I gave up. Perhaps I could try it for a longer time.

Mimi (Stuttgart),

Since your dentist has likely eliminated a dental cause for the halitosis, it may be time to look at other areas that may be a factor.

Many mouth washes are too strong and can often be counter productive by killing off "good bacteria" in the mouth along with the bad.

Did you complete an antibiotic regimen about or prior to the time you first became aware of your halitosis?

Bad breath can be caused by sinus isuues such as a sinus infection/sunusitis or post nasal drip. If that is an issue, it needs to be dealt with first. There are grapeseed extract nasal sprays that have shown usefullness in helping control some of these bacterial issues.

Another common cause is an imbalanced gut biome. Probiotics in conjunction with prebiotics or quality kefir have shown some benefit in this area and can potentially have a positive effect on sinus issues along with the gut. As a last resort, the fecal transplants may be worth looking into. Do some reading about the relationship of acidophilus or probiotics and bad breath.

Since both of these potential causes are fairly common, it may be worth looking into them before delving deeper for other causes.

which breathing practice did you use?

Hydrogen Peroxide
Posted by Alain (Ottawa, Canada) on 05/20/2009

Answer to Joanne from Jakarta "HOW TO DILUTE 20% PEROXIDE FOR MOUTH WASH?"

You can dilute it to make a 1.5% solution. 1 vol of H2O2 @ 20% 12 vol of Distilled water will make a solution at about 1.5% i.e. 20%/13.

Formula for ratio of concentrated H2O2 to distilled water to produce a new concentration:

ratio = (OldConc/NewConc) -1

Ex: 20% -->10% requires 1 vol of H2O2 to 1 vol of Distilled water ( 20%/10%) -1 = 2 -1 = 1..

Ex 35% --> 3% requires 1 vol of H2O2 to 11 vol of Distilled water (35% / 3%) -1 = 12-1 = 11.

Oil Pulling

I started oil pulling 3 weeks ago with Sesame Oil. At first I was absolutely disgusted by the consistency and could barely keep it in my mouth for 3 minutes. The next day I tried again and was able to swish for about 7 minutes. Everyday the process became easier and easier and now I'm up to 15 minutes. It has not taken away the dark circles under my eyes, my allergies are the worst they've ever been, and my energy has not improved BUT I have definitely noticed that my teeth are extremely clean and feel absolutely amazing. The horribly bad breath (which I attribute to several years on antibiotics) that plagued me has completely disappeared. Clean teeth and fresh breath are reasons enough for me to continue oil pulling and hopefully after a few months I will reap the benefits that others speak of.

I've been doing oil pulling with Sesame Seed Oil, and it's been working great for my bleeding gums. Cleared it up in 2 days! However, like some of the other posts I read, it actually caused my breath to be worse. So I followed it up with the ACV & Baking Soda gargle and rinse at it totally worked. Awesome.

Alicia, hello. I am just getting started with this gargle. Never done it before but hope it will provide some relief for this halitosis. I noticed 1 cup of water is ALOT to gargle; do you gargle multiple times to use all of the cup? How long do you gargle? Thanks.

The smell of Apple Cider Vinegar is unbearable for me - theres no way I can drink it so tried it as toner for my problem skin but quit because of the smell. It's been 9 years and still sitting with my problem skin - no doctor and no meds have helped. Do you not feel nauseous when gargling this?

Hi Lala, I used to hate the smell of ACV too, until I started making/drinking it like lemonade (a glass of water with a few tsp of vinegar instead of lemon; with honey or sugar added in). It became so tasty this way, now I love to use ACV for everthing (health drink, mouthwash, skin, hair, nails). Also be sure to buy the ACV with "the mother" (the murky looking stuff floating around the bottom of the bottle), NOT the clean/clear vinegar. If the smell is still too strong, dilute it with alow vera, water, (or rose water for lovely soft skin).

I'm really going to try it out. Because I have tried baking soda few weeks ago and it worked for like 2 to 3 days and my bad breath came back again. I have been struggling with bb for years and I can't get rid of it, I've tried everything. I brush my teeth regularly, I go to the dentist every 6 months and he said that my teeth were healthy and no cavities so I don't get it.

Hydrogen Peroxide

Just to let people know that I got a condition known as hairy tongue about a year ago when I first started messing about with H202. If you are going to use it for a mouth wash, make sure that even the 3% Peroxide is diluted. At most, the ratio is supposed to be 1:5 in the water.

Anyway, I took it straight and it caused a horrible unsightly condition called hairy tongue which I have NOT been able to get rid of.
I have posted something on this site about six months ago - tried everything, salt water, h202 dilute, lemon water, brushing it with a scraper etc and NOTHING works.

I am not knowing Hydrogen Peroxide. I am sure it is good stuff and has its uses but don't use it as a mouthwash like I did without diluting it. Be careful when experimenting.

Take Care (and if anyone knows something that can help me, please let me know)

Daniel

I use hydrogen peroxide to rinse my mouth out after brushing and flossing in the morning....but I absolutely dilute it. About 1/2 & 1/2 should be fine. Not sure what to tell you about the hairy tongue though...sounds like it must be awful though. I'm sorry you had to experience that.

I suffered from a "hairy tongue" or a white coated tongue for many months. I did not know what caused the problem, and tried every oral hygiene method I could think of to remedy it, but to no avail. Everyone to include the doctors said it was because I had a dirty mouth. I have always prided myself on taking care of my dental needs so I knew a dirty mouth was not the problem. To make a long story short, through my persistent, I finally found a doctor who diagnosed the problem. The hairy tongue was caused by excessive yeast in my body. Just as excessive yeast can show up as a vaginal yeast infection, it can also show up as a hairy or white coated tongue in the mouth. The doctor prescribed the proper antibiotics and within days the problem disappeared.

Hyrdrogen peroxide is found in pharmacies but you gotta make sure it's very distilled when mixed with water, cause H2O2 is very powerful and damaging, so first make sure it's at a safe concentration before consuming, as for the exact concentrations I wouldn't be the right person to ask as I don't use it- previous posts give exact concentration details, hope it works out!

I used to have a somewhat furry tongue(white) I used to smoke for years and drank a lot of beer. What I did was I went out and bought some extra virgin coconut oil, originally to make the swelling in my tonsils go down. I brushed my teeth first and then put a big glob of oil in my mouth. I tilted my head back and let it sink to the back of my throat. I held it there and gargled it for about 20 minutes. When I spit it out, my tongue was immediately wayyy pinker. I think I'm allergic to the oil though, because I ate a few tbsp of it and broke out in minor hives on my finger and lips. But it really cured my white tongue. I stopped using it though because of the hives and now to keep my tongue pink, I dip my toothbrush in mouthwash, brush my tongue, and use a tongue scraper to scrape it all off gently. My tongue has improved 90% in one week.
