Turmeric

Tumeric for Sinus Infection: I am a big fan of turmeric and take it daily for my Crohn's Disease. I've recently had a cold that turned into a sinus infection. I try really hard to stay away from antibiotics because it kills the good bacteria in the gut. I put 1-2 tsp of turmeric in a bowl and poured almost boiling water over in. I then set the bowl in my lap and put a towel over my head. Breath (over the bowl with the towel over my head) in through my nose and out through my mouth for 10-15 minutes 6 times during through out the day. The next morning I woke up blowing the infection out of my nose. It was super gross. I continued the same thing the following day. I also drank lots of fluids and got plenty of rest.

Neti Pot With Saline and Apple Cider Vinegar

If you read the label on those "sodium"packs, it is actually baking soda and salt. Since we use "salt sense" genuine salt, but powdered (you will use less on food) combining this powdered salt with an equal amount of baking soda, duplicates the packets that come with Netty Pots.

I wondered about adding Apple Cider Vinegar or white vinegar to the netty pot solution, and you have confirmed for me that it is a good answer to a sinus infection.

Thank you.

Sniff Warm Water

I work with crafts nearly every day and more during the months of November and December working with fine glitter. That's when my sinuses start getting a little congested. When I am through with the work I walk into the bathroom wash my hands and then fill my hands with luke warm water and sniff the water into my sinus cavity and blow several times and Walla all clear. If I don't get to do it and an infection starts I use a few drops of peroxide and it's clear within 10 to 15 minutes. It took a couple of years to realize it was what I was working with that caused the problem. Yes, I wear a mask most of the time but that stuff just flies everywhere.

I think the ACV is great for thinning mucous of a sinus infection, but it hasn't worked well for an infection that has been going on for a number of days. I just got back from an 8 day trip and the plane (going and coming) reaked havoc on my congested sinus passages. While I was out of town, I stopped by a Whole Foods and got some acv to take. I kept my pH alkaline by sipping some acv in a water bottle every 5-10 minutes. It certainly made my nose run! I also squirted 3% hydrogen peroxide from a nasal spray bottle up each nostril... just one squirt. It burned like crazy for a minute, but definitely helped. When things got stirred up again after flying home, I decided to up my water intake (One glass of water every 2 hours), take oregano oil (to fight the infection), and one turmeric capsule (to reduce inflammation). The wild oregano oil turned my thick yellow mucous to clear in about an hour. I will continue all of this (lots of water, turmeric, oregano oil, acv) until the infection is gone. Lot of hard work to clobber the infection, but better than antibiotics. Which isn't to say I would refuse antibiotics if I really needed them! But if I don't have to, I don't.

Update to my post: The remedies worked in less than 24 hours! My sinus infection is completely gone. I am guessing the Oregano Oil killed off the infection, but all the water that I drank helped keep the mucous flowing, rather than stuck in the back of my sinus passages causing increasing pain.

Lactose Intolerance

Sinus Infections and Ice cream: I do not know about the various brands of ice creams and their contents. However, my body is lactose intolerant and whenever I give in to consuming ice cream [of the homemade variety,no less], in a few minutes,I feel the nasal clogging. Has anyone been tested for lactose intolerance? Sugar and other foods that do not agree with my system affect my sinuses adversely.

Measure Your pH

I had a lot of sinus infections and 3 surgeries over a 10 year span. I finally thought it may be my diet. I read an article about measuring your body ph and I had an extremely low in ph in by body which is acidic. I changed my diet and corrected my ph and my sinus infections went away. I get 1 or 2 a year but as long as I eat good and keep my ph in balance everything is ok. The first week of the diet I broke out with blotches all over my body and the doctor said it was detoxing from all the bad chemicals in my body.

Dental Care

I had a raging infection in one of my top molar teeth. Around the same time I got the worst sinus infection I have EVER had. The pain in my tooth went away, so I didn't get it checked out. For the next year, every time I got sick, even a minor cold, I got this same major sinus infection. Finally after the year was up, I consulted a nutrionist about the causes of sinus infections. The first thing she mensioned was a bad tooth. I had forgotten about the tooth infection I had. Thank God, that same week, the tooth pain returned. I was determined to rid myself of thesr horrible sinus infections, so I went to the dentist and got my tooth pulled. That sinus infection lingered and lingered even after I got the tooth pulled, but that was the last one I ever had, and it has been almost a year now! I am so grateful something FINALLY worked for GOOD!!!

Unpetroleum Jelly

I got rid of a very long and aggravating sinus infection (w/blood specks etc.) by using a product called UNPETROLEUM JELLY...blow and clean your nose, then apply a small amount to a cotton swab and insert gently into the nostril and rotate around the inside so the entire inside is coated, as high as you can go(be very gentle); repeat for the other nostril. Apply morning and bedtime. It took about a week but I've been infection free ever since and I now do this daily.

Humidify

First of all, moisture in the air is very important. Many people get sinus infections during the winter months being cooped up in the house. I prefer the Vick's Vaporizer in my bedroom and I try to keep it boiling @ night. Servicing your heater filters regularly is important too, filters should be changed @ month. At the first sign of a sinus infection I snort a sea salt, baking soda, distilled water solution up my nose 2x's a day, That really helps. 1cup distilled water 1tsp. sea salt, 1/4 tsp soda, slightly heat in microwave, put in a baby bulb and snort it up your nose. I know it sounds gross and it is but it WORKS!

Olbas Oil
Posted by Bess (Calgary, Alberta, Canada) on 04/23/2013

Hi Valeria - Since that was an old post (2007), the person may not respond. Olbas actually has an inhalant that you can get at any health food store that sells Olbas oil. It's very similar in style to the Vicks inhalant (it's a little tube with an opening that you put up one nostril and breathe deeply) - except Olbas has a different blend of oils (more natural). If you can't find it, you can also put a couple of drops of Olbas oil on a piece of tissue, cup it around your nose and breathe deeply (I do this sometimes when I fly to avoid congestion). Good luck! Tomato Tea

I was extremely skeptical about this since I have been suffering from a chronic sinus infection for over 2 months. I had in the past taken multiple doses of antibiotics with only moderate results. My health plan recently changed, so I figured I would give this a try before paying much more to go to the doctors. I picked up the ingredients, and tried Tabasco sauce as the hot sauce. I warmed it in the microwave for 1 minute. It smelled absolutely terrible, and the taste was not great. I could stomach it, but it was like taking shots of alcohol... you had to take a deep breath and slam as much as possible and hold it down. I didn't even finish the whole thing, but I finished 80% of it. Within an hour, and still, hours later, my sinuses are clearing up! My throat is sore from all the draining, but this cure definitely worked! I will try a second round tonight. Despite the terrible smell, and slightly less terrible taste, it was well worth it to finally get this cleared up, and for only $8 worth of ingredients! Thanks for the recipe!

I suffered for years with sinus infections. My last sinus infection lasted an entire year. I read a book called: "Your Body's Many Cries for Water" written by a doctor. I began drinking at least 2 liters of water a day, and have not had ANY form of a cold or sinus infection since. An added bonus, I have lost weight without even counting calories.

Sage

I was ALWAYS having sinus infections after ice creams especially in the 80's and 90's... at some point, I read of sage helping with sinus infections... Worked great and I've not had as much of the sinus infections (of course, I rarely eat ice cream and the chemically enhanced soft serve type "frozen desserts" either...).

Even the kitchen spice bottle like you use for cooking Thanksgiving dinner - just plopped a teaspoon in hot tea water and let it steep 3-5 minutes or longer.

At first I wanted it with stevia or honey to deal with the sage astringency/flavor - but now I can just shoot it straight. Be prepared to spend some time in the restroom bringing all the phlegm up - doesn't sound pretty, but the pain goes bye-bye with every glob that I spit up and out into the trash (I shouldn't have to tell you all to not "recycle" it by swallowing whatever you cough. It only buys you a little time until it comes back up so you still need to clear it out of your sinus passages!!).

Neti Pot With Saline and Apple Cider Vinegar

I've had chronic sinus problems since I was a teenager (now 30 years old). I've had sinus inflammation for a few years that has been difficult to manage. A month ago, it progressed into a raging sinus infection. The past week has been horrible. I've had a ton of sinus pressure, headache, dizzy/foggy head, congested ears, and the wonderful yellow/green mucus. I cannot take antibiotics due to other health issues, but I've tried just about everything I could think of including OTC remedies and many natural remedies.

I just came across this Apple Cider Vinegar rinse and thought I'd try. I've been irrigating with salt water, but have not added the ACV. Last night, I added ACV to my rinse. I use the NeilMed Sinus Rinse bottle. WHOA! The amount of green crud that left my face was incredible. And I could actually breathe again. Got clogged again overnight, so did it again in the morning. Same story. Tons of green junk left my nose. There is a definite improvement, and I will continue doing this.

Bonus... the chronic ear pain I've had for two years straight is greatly reduced since doing the ACV rinse. We will see what the future holds for this! So far I'm impressed.

Neti Pot With Saline and Apple Cider Vinegar

I am an asthmatic and an allergy sufferer. My allergies trigger my asthma. Usually after a cold I ALWAYS get bronchitis. It just never fails. I could never get rid of a cold because the mucus would build up into a sinus infection. After I start using organic ACV I started noticing that it helped me breathe better.

My health insurance rates went up this year so I decided to try and find cures for ailments without running to the doctor, so I decided to try what I read on here, an ACV sinus wash/rinse. the first time I tried pouring 1/4 tsp into the netty pot with 8 oz sterile water and a salt packet from the drug store, I went a little too much on the ACV. I accidentally dropped quite a splash in there, didn't really know how much went in. Well, it BURNED and I was so desperate for relief I just toughed it out. Well, it cleaned me completely out. That night I slept great and within 2 days I was clear. I did it 2 nights in a row, just before bed.

Then I got sick again, but this time I poured some ACV into a cup, the scooped out 1/4 tsp into my sterile salted water and it was not painful at all, didn't clear it up as quickly as it did when I used more ACV, but as long as I do it in the morning and at night, it keeps me feeling better, until I clear up on my own.

I also use a cotton swab and dip it in the ACV and clean my ears, because usually I get an ear infection along with my sinus infection. I just dip the swab in the vinegar and make sure it is completely drenched because I really want the ACV to get in my ear and travel up some, maybe even put a drop or two in there if possible.

This is not really a miracle cure (though for me it seems like it), but it makes life easier so that you can function while giving your body time to heal itself without the need of antibiotics.

Turpentine

I had a sinus infection for about 6 months and tried many things to get rid of it. What finally took it away was organic turpentine oil.....lightly rubbed on the outside of the sinus twice a day for about a week. I then tried it out on my nephew and it worked on him too. Since then when ever I get anything sinus happening I rub a little on .... like if I have a sinus headache from a cold. Good luck....
