[YEA] Liz from Stroudsburg, PA: "I have been through a lifelong battle with urinary tract infections. It's been a vicious cycle of antibiotics then yeast infections and once had laser surgery of my urethrea to open up passage. Cranberry helped, but never cured the problem. Finally my sister found the answer. It's called d-mannose. It is a type of sugar that bonds to the type of bacteria that causes the infection. It works only on infections caused by the bacteria that naturally live in our digestive system and escape into urinary tract. However these make up 90% of urinary infections. for me it's been a miracle. One dose can be taken as a preventative after intercourse. or a few doses a day in case of a full infection. great for pregnant women who don't want antibiotics. I went from having at least 6 infections a year to being antibiotic free for the past 3 years. Couldn't be happier."Replies
08/15/2008: Holly from Broadview Hts, Ohio replies: "I'm trying the d-mannose for my elderly mom, who's had two uti's within the last month. The 1st uti wasn't treated with enough anti-biotics, the 2nd, required hospitalization, with IV antibiotics and a weeks worth of oral antibiotic. I'm hoping the d-mannose will do the trick to keep this awful infection from occurring again. Has anyone successfully used d-mannose for the elderly? Thanks."
[YEA] 09/14/2012: Dewchild from Matthews, Nc, United States replies: "I have been a long time "lurker" on Earth Clinic. I first came to the site when I started having frequent UTIs, (monthly for a year) and the doctors were unable to help. I tried it all. Apple Cider, Vitamin C, Cranberry, Water. You name it. I went to two different Urologists, that basically gave me a refillable Rx for antibiotic and sent me on my way. During this time, I continued to get yeast infections, as well - from the antibiotic use. It seemed like there was a link to the yeast infection and the UTI, but my general practicioner ignored me when I mentioned it. Finally the third Dr. I saw was a Uro-Gynocologist. He had me take probiotic on a regular basis internally and also to open a probiotic capsule and put the probiotic in my vaginal cavity, so that I could restore the good bacteria there. His theory was that the antibiotics had killed all of the good bacteria in my vaginal area and by replacing it with probiotics (actually putting the probiotics in there), the good bacteria could start to flouish and kill off any bad bacteria before it made it into my bladder.
He also gave me an antibiotic. I threw the antibiotic away and used the D-Mannose instead. I did the probiotic internally and the infections never came back. It's been over a year since then, but I wanted to come and share my story in case it could help someone else.
In retrospect, I don't think I had frequent UTIs. I think I had a UTI, that never went away. I was probably resistant to all of those antibiotics and the D-Mannose did the trick. It was like a miracle for me. I haven't had an infection since, but if I do start to feel like one might be coming on, I take a dose of D-Mannose and drink lots of water! Big thanks to the Earth Clinic for helping with the healing!"
07/02/2013: Gentle Reader from Graceland, Tn replies: "Could you indicate, if you can, how often you were instructed to put the probiotic in the vaginal cavity and was there a specific strain or brand that was used?"
D-Mannose, Garlic, Alkaline Pills
[YEA] 10/25/2010: Webgal from Richmond, Va: "I've been having chronic, unabated urinary tract infections for years. I actually ran across this site looking for sinus infection cures and decided to share my secret for no UTIs. I was plagued with these and my life was miserable until I started doing this. How I discovered my regimen:
I was at restaurant and they served garlic soup. Right after, I realized symptoms of UTI were gone. I almost did not go to the dinner because of the pain of the UTI. Made the soup and that worked but can't make it all the time. So here is my daily regimen for keeping away UTI
Garlic pill (odorless). 1 in morning, 1 at night
1 D-mannose per day. (Sometimes when I feel symptoms, I do one at night)
Vitamin C every day. I take a liquid Vit C
Also I use an alkaline pill I found at the health food store every once in a while. No UTIs since I began doing this."
10/25/2010: Francisca from Michelbach-le-bas, Alsace, France replies: "I am not sure about the odorless garlic pills as I have just read that they don't have the same work as fresh garlic because the pungent odor means that you are getting the good stuff. I think that it makes sense..... But it is a good idea about using the garlic against the UTI. I don't have a lot anymore but I will try if I ever have one again! I hate antibiotics..... I just add crushed garlic through my food, no problem or sometimes in the salads."
[YEA] 10/31/2009: Liz from Shelton, Washington: "Dandelion is free. Recently used it to cure bladder and kidney infections in both my granddaughter and my daughter. Used the dried leaf which I had collected and dried. It really does work. Use one rounded teaspoon per six to eight ounces of boiling water. Let it steep for at least five minutes before drinking. If the infection is severe two rounded teaspoons may be used per cup. Do not use dandelion leaves that have been sprayed with chemicals or that have been collected from along roads or highways. I have very old dandelion plants that grow leaves that obtain 14 inches in length and 8 to 9 inches wide and collect them every year to dry. Dandelion also makes a good body cleanse and was used by the pioneers as a spring tonic. Some people do not care for the taste of the tea so adding a mint tea and some honey to it improves the taste. My daughter says she doesn't mind the taste."
Dandelion Tea and Oregano Oil
[YEA] 06/04/2006: Shelley from Nova Scotia: "I tried almost everything, conventional and alternative. Finally found my cure-dandellion tea and Oil of Oregano at first sign of infection and as a preventative I take acidophillus supplements try to keep the bacteria balanced. If I stick to these three products I can keep my bladder under control. Basically cures my bladder infections and the infections are occuring less often as times goes by. I hope this helps someone else because I was very discouraged when I finally found this "cure", I had spent a lot of money and time trying to find relief. When I went into my health store and said I think I have tried everything here, do you have any suggestions, they offered me the oil of oregano and said they had never heard any bad results. Great stuff!!"
[YEA] 01/15/2012: Rose from London, Uk: "Never had this condition before and had frequent urination (no discharge) for over 6 weeks (all during Xmas) and 3 lots of antibiotics. Finally, found this website and started taking own action. Thanks ladies for your advice. One more thing to add to the discussion in addition to all the other remedies. I decided to drastically change my diet. Cut out all foods with added sugar (yeah, all the nice stuff - cakes, chocolate, etc. ), cut down all yeast foods and replaced with rye bread/flat bread/crackers etc. Replaced regular tea/coffee with decaff and mint tea. Used honey instead of refined sugar. Cranberry juice and water instead of alcohol. It's a toughy but I have to say it's working. I've been free for over a week.. Not long I know but it feels better than nothing. What's more, the weight is coming off too! Don't recommend this forever, but was tired of seeing doctors and thought it time to take myself in hand! Hope this helps. Good luck to you all."Replies
03/14/2014: Dallas from Amesbury, Ma replies: "I too, have had to change my diet. Due to the fact that every time I took antibiotics, the UTI would come back right away as soon as I stopped taking them and the antibiotics have caused tendon damage and nerve damage, I had to quit taking them. I have tried many many home remedies, which have helped somewhat, but not cured the UTI. Being Celiac, I have cut out all gluten, all grains, and also sugar and all my food allergies, which are many (including cranberry). Strangely enough, and I would sure like to know if anyone else has found this to be true, weak coffee seems to be the most helpful - always clearing up the urine about 15 minutes after I drink a cup. I know that almost every website on the subject, if not EVERY website, condemns coffee for this but - go figure!"
[YEA] 02/25/2009: B from Fair Lawn, NJ: "I would like to let you know that urinary tract infections can be caused by candida yeast as well as bacteria. If you have the symptoms and are having trouble getting over it by taking the standard cranberry and D'Mannose remedies, consider yeast, particularly if urine analysis is clear. I found this out after the infection got much worse following a breakfast of homemade cookies and pancakes. Then I noticed on another popular site a person had the same symptoms, pain, light brown spotting in the front of underwear, constant feeling of having to urinate, etc. This was after the doctor laughed, told me my urinalysis was clear and I was just dehydrated and overreacting.
What helped me was to cut out sugar and wheat, and take raw garlic, oil of oregano, OSHA root and coconut oil. Not sure which one helped the most, but after two weeks, I just wanted to get better, and I did."
[YEA] 01/24/2013: Kiks from London, Uk replies: "Diet can definitely be a factor. I had chronic "infections" but no bacteria was being picked up in the urine tests. As I was also suffering with stomach problems I cut out gluten and within a few days felt like a new person! I found out I'm severely intolerant to gluten, and eating any irritates my bladder within an hour (along with my stomach).
Interestingly some children wet the bed when they eat gluten--it's all related!"
02/20/2011: Arie from Singapore: "UTI occurence is very periodic for me, I get it almost every month just before my period and sometimes, just because I ate something sweet. I've read about the coconut oil and ACV and am waiting for it to be delivered when I suffered from another attack.
As you know your mind gets fogged, you are in a constant dull pain, and you SIMPLY CANNOT GET TO SLEEP. There was certainly some despair.
I popped a garlic pill, vitamin C, drank water..... Nothing.
In desperation, I recalled watching the TV with this really old man talking about steaming a mixture of myrh, frankincense and some other ingredient that I can't remember, to subside inflammation.
Since I was travelling and have about 4 oils with me, I decided to go with my frankincense.
I dropped 2 drops onto a panty liner and wore it to bed.
Thankfully I fell asleep quickly and when I woke up in the morning, the pain that I usually experience EVERY MORNING when I visit the toilet, IS GONE.
I am in awe. For days my mornings had been associated with visits to the toilet and weird smelling pee. I cannot describe how troubling it had been and am truly happy I found some sort of a remedy.
01/18/2012: Anon from Anon: "Would putting a clove of garlic wrapped in cheese cloth in the vagina help a bladder infection?"
10/28/2011: Namaste78900 from Middletown, Ohio, Usa: "Can you please tell me why my daughter gets recurrent infections of UTI and throat? She has large lymph gland removes in 09 tonsils removed in 2010. She has been on about 8 antibiotics in 10 months. She seems to get uti and throat infections at the same time always running fever with them. She is now in college and this is affecting her alot. Does antibiotics affect immune system and make it weak?
10/28/2011: P from Middle, Fl replies: "Antibiotic kills all your good flora! Thats all the good bacteria that helps fight the bad ones. And if taken for a long time yes it breaks down your immune system. Your immune system starts in your intestines were all the nutrients are sucked into your body and if there is no good bacteria to fight the bad ones... Well then you left with only bad ones taking over. A good alternative to those antibiotics is Grape Fruit seed extract. I have used it with great results.
However; I have been doing daily research on this field and came across very interesting information and soon will start testing them. some of them are;
- hydrogen peroxide-food grade
- colloidal silver
- coconut oil
read all the remedies from the top tab, very informative. This is the best web site, I have benefited from many remedies posted here!"
10/28/2011: Dorothy from Oz, Ks replies: "I've read online that coconut may kill the bacteria that causes UTIs and throat infections. It may help your daughter in other ways too. This information was gleaned from the Coconut Research Center.
Wishing your daughter well!"
06/11/2011: Ronald from Clearwater, Florida: "Drinking a lot of water is good for UTI's. It washes away germs. I wonder if drinking Chlorinated water is the best way to go. Chlorine is a real germ killer. It is so powerful that it can kill fish. So if you drink chlorinated water and it goes out the urinary track, then the germs get it good."Replies
06/11/2011: Debbie from Melbourne, Australia replies: "Chlorine is not god to drink. For starters it depletes the body of Vitamin E. If you leave water sit for about 15 minutes the chlorine vanishes from it.
Google the dangers of drinking Chlorine."
06/12/2011: Sheila from San Diego, Ca, Usa replies: "(Drinking enough water is a good thing. For me, enough water is 1/2 my weight in ounces.)
Responding to Ronald's post:
Or, from what I've learned from a iodine/iodide Yahoo group I'm a member of, the chlorine will displace the bromine, which will then displace iodine in the body, making folks deficient.
The halides -- fluoride->chloride->bromide->iodide -- lightest displacing the heaviest on the empirical table. I'm still trying to figure out though how taking iodine in larger doses (than recommended) would displace fluoride if displacement happens by weight.
So people ought to do more searching for info/facts before drinking chlorinated water. I'm not so sure chlorinated water is a good idea if it's the chlorinated tap water we're talking about."
04/14/2012: Jennifer from Forster, Nsw Australia replies: "Re UTI infection the greatest thing that I have found is De-Mannose it is just magic. Thanks for the other tips re Grapefruit seed.. Is there a special brand? The other thing is to eleminate sugar and fructose. I have just started on the apple cider vinegar how amazing is that with sinus flu have that twice a day and into my infra red sauna what a difference in a day.. Almost gone. What a great site.. jennifer."
Golden Seal and Echinachea
[YEA] 10/11/2011: Nikki from San Antonio, Texas : "I had recently read that goldenseal is good for bladder/UT infections. I went to the local pharmacy and picked up a Goldenseal Echineaca blend capsule. I took two capsules three times per day when I first felt symptoms of the UTI. To be thorough, I also bought a home urine test to measure the possibility of UTI. The test measured that I was positive for UTI. After taking the goldenseal for 1 day, I was symptom free. After 2 days, I retook the test and was negative. I continued the goldenseal capsules for 5 days and tapered offer to once per day for a few more days. Symptoms never reappeared and still registered normal on the urine test 2 weeks later.
I also had an experience with symptoms of a yeast infection. I used a douche mixture of one capsule of goldenseal, 1/4 tsp of salt and one cup of water. Douched once and was symptom free w/in one day. However, I followed up with a second douche two days later to be sure and symptoms never resurfaced. Even after my pap smear just one month later, I was clear. I actually mentioned my experience to my doctor. He said its always best to come in to be checked but he is aware of goldenseal's antibiotic properties!"Replies
10/12/2011: Joyce from Lansdowne, Pa replies: "Hi Nikki, Why did you use salt in the douche blend Was the pH acidic or alkaline? I believe salt makes the pH more alkaline and most douches use an acidic base."
Goldenseal and Echinachea
[YEA] 03/21/2006: Natili from Montpelier, VT: "[reports that goldenseal and echinachea cured her UTI.]"Replies
[NAY] 08/11/2008: London from Sandusky , Ohio replies: "Goldenseal Tea tastes so gross, and is so bitter. I could not drink it."
Grape Leaf Pickles
[YEA] 10/19/2007: Mary from Winston-Salem, NC: "Forget drinking vinegar, just eat 2 grape leaf pickles. They are very salty and vinegary. You can also take 1 cranberry pill while eating the pickles. Wait 30 minutes before you start drinking lots of water. Preventive also after intercourse. Dial antibacterial soap -- wash privates within 5 minutes after intercourse too is great."
Grapefruit Seed Extract
[YEA] 06/20/2011: Kalina from Honolulu, Hi: "I find Nutribiotic Grapefruit Seed Extract (tablet form) to work on my UTI's. I also use Miracle II Neutralizer Gel to relieve the burning/itching. It will help in the vaginal area, but for maximum effectiveness, use some type of syringe or applicator to get it further up into the vagina. Make sure you wash the applicator well first.
These two work consistently for me."
Grapefruit Seed Extract, D-Mannose
[YEA] 03/22/2014: Bighypno from Md, Dc, Va: "As a man, I had extreme painful urination and after about 4 days of feeling funny, I noticed white pus? or sperm? or yeast or something white coming out of my penis. I went to the doctor. The piss test revealed nothing, he then asked had I had sex recently and I said yes and he said oh its definitely gonorrhea or trichinosis probably mixed with chlamydia then. I said doc, those infections have green or yellow pus, this is white. They also come with very swollen lymph nodes, etc. He said "I see this all the time". I said Doc, none of the women I been with are complaining about even the slightest discomfort or odor so it cant be gonorrhea as women are much more symptom prone than men and I hadnt been with anyone for 10 days at this point. So rather than sit there arguing, I deferred to the "medical doctor" who then gave a shot of resofin (sp?) in my butt and 250mg Azithromycin 1x day and 500 mg Metronidazole 2x day.
I didnt feel better after 5 days of taking the medicine the doctor prescribed. At this point I was hoping I didnt have bacteria resistant gonorrhea. It still felt like there was something stuck in my penis and the burning at the very tip felt maybe 50% better. I then went to my stash of natural medicine and before I went to bed I took 15 drops of Grapefruit seed extract in a glass of water and drunk the water while taking 2 tablets of 250mg D-Mannose then around about 4am I woke up out of my sleep and my penis didnt feel swollen. I went to the bathroom to urinate and things felt a lot better. I then woke up and took the same dosage 2 tablets of D-Mannoose and washed them down with water containing 15 drops of GSE again and continued first thing in morning and last thing at night for 5 days with the combo. I have not had any problems since.
Any of a few things couldve happened. 1. All 3 prescriptons which basically cover 99% of the possible STD's I could have had didnt work. 2. The prescriptions didnt work until I took the grapefruit seed extract with it, in the literature about grapefruit seed extract they are known to make antibiotics twice more powerful when combined with them. 3. None of the prescriptions did anything and the grapefruit seed extract and D-Mannose combo cured it. 4. The GSE cured it alone. 5. The D-Mannose cured it alone.
All I know is that had a infection that normal medicine and a 3 prescription combo couldnt kill and had I not taken the GSE with the D-Mannose I would still be in a TON of pain. Yet I am 100% cured with no issues. Hope my story helps, ask me any questions you may have."Replies
03/24/2014: Bighypno from Md, Dc, Va replies: "Just wanted to add before I went to the doctor I did heavy doses of Apple Cider Vinegar. I then did Centex. I also did 3 diff types of Cranberry extracts. Vitamin C high doses and GSE tablets. None of them did much if anything to slow the infection."
