Tea Tree Oil for Sinus Polyps

Tea tree essential oil is an effective natural treatment for sinus polyps. Tea tree is one of the more gentle essential oils and can be used topically without diluting, but it is not recommended when using this oil for nasal polyps or other sensitive areas of the body. Using straight tea tree oil in the nasal cavity can cause side effects and is not recommended. While it is a more gentle essential oil, all essential oils are very concentrated.

How to Use Tea Tree Oil for Sinus Polyps

Tea Tree and a Carrier Oil

First, you must find a carrier oil to mix with your tea tree oil. Olive oil, coconut oil, almond oil and castor oil are all good choices. Since castor oil can shrink growths, it may be the best choice because you will end up with two remedies in one application.

Mix one teaspoon of your carrier oil with 5 drops of tea tree essential oil. If you mix this in a dropper bottle, it will be easy to apply the remedy, even to nasal polyps that you cannot see or access with a q-tip. On you back, tilt your head back and drop a drop or two of the oil mixture into each nostril. This can be done once or twice a day. If this mixture seems too strong for you, add more of your carrier oil.

If your nasal polyp can be easily reached with a q-tip, you can put this oil on a q-tip and apply directly to the polyp.

Tea Tree in a Nasal Sprayer

You can buy an empty nasal spray bottle, or recycle an old one after cleaning it out well. Mix together the following:

  • 1 ounce distilled water
  • 1/8 teaspoon sea salt
  • 1 drop tea tree essential oil

Shake your bottle before using it each time. If it feels too strong, add more water.

Side Effects of Tea Tree Oil for Nasal Polyps

Tea tree essential oil may cause your nose to run. It may also burn or sting. At first, the polyp may swell before it begins to shrink. Continue reading to learn what our readers have found when using tea tree oil for nasal polyps and specific tips on how to use this remedy.

I really want to thank you for your guidance and discussions on this platform.

I have suffered for more than twenty years from chronic sinuses and nasal polyps with mno sense of smell and having a lot of mucus. Despite blowing out regularly, blockage never cleared: I had an operation in March 2019 but never enjoyed the results as by October 2019, I was back to blockage from polyps. The only treatment that gave two weeks clearance is Madrol/prednisolone which: there was zero response to nasal sprays including nassonex.

I started using tea tree oil 5 drops+ castor oil teaspoon+5 drops iodine(😀)+5 drops extra virgin oil(😀) then thoroughly mixed them in a bottle. I then put two drops of this concoction into each stuffy nose on 08/03/2022 and today 10/03/2022 is my day 3 AND just on day two I could breath a bit on one nose and slept breathing better with it. Today on day 3, 💪💪💪👍👍for the first time without prednisolone/medrol, I can blow out my nostrils with clear thin mucus unlike the "usual" former brownish thick one. I can sense smell though it is not such perfect and the asthma that I was taking seretide twice daily has improved such that I am so far on day 2 without taking it.

I just want to thank everyone who has shared their experiences here for now my life has improved and I hope for perfection.

Please share the alcohol treatment that I came across here on one of the posts as a deterrent for recurrence of polyps: I cannot afford to go back there: my life is better than after operation.

Can you tell me, did you suffer from animal allergies/food allergies, or anything like that while suffering with polyps?

Hello all! I tried this remedy but soon could taste the concoction dripping down my throat. Tea tree oil is supposedly poisonous and since our sinuses drain into our throats somehow is this dangerous? Would love to try again but worried.

Hello, I´ve been using tea tree oil on a q-tip for 3 days already to treat my nasal polyps. Since the second day I got a white layer over the bigger polyp. I don´t know if this is good or bad. I searched a lot in Internet but I couldn´t find any report about this effect of the tea tree oil on polyps. Could someone please tell me if you had a similar experience and what was the end result if you had a white layer on the polyps after tea tree oil?

Can I use this remedy for my child who is 3 years old?

Is it safe though?

This would be too strong for a child. Make a nasal spray using 1oz distilled water or saline 1 drop Tea Tree Essential Oil and 1/8th tsp sea salt or pink salt. Shake well and use as often as needed. If this seems to help you could add 1 more drop of tea tree oil.

Dear Ellie,

Perhaps try the castor oil alone first? Then consider very diluted tea tree if that is not effective.

Vitamin c and Nettle tea internally are two things I would consider for boosting the immune system and perhaps helping reduce the polyps.

Hi, it's supposed to dry it up (white layer) then eventually fall off.

I have suffered nasal congestion for 2 yrs now, and the doctor's findings maintained that it is polyps blocking nasal air passages. On October 9, while searching for natural solutions via Google, I discovered the use of TTO and a carrier oil helps. I began to to use TTO and Olive Oil, and hope that it works well...Is this solution working? Secondly, is there any known side effects? Can someone please tell the successes of using the TTO ...Please

I am using Tea Tree Oil for last 20 days. I started using for Polyps reduction and removal through shrinking and eventually dropping off. when I started I diluted using coconut oil. But now I apply TTO directly 10 drops in each nostril three times a day. one day a one inch long destructed probably polyp came out in part. This reinforces that the process is going on. I get yellowish nasal waste every second day indicating something is getting cleared. My smell senses have also increased immediately after the usage which was zero earlier. Now I have also started Ayurvedic Support Medicine which is also very very helpful. This is a proprietory medicine for respiratory and asthamatic disorders.

TTO oil is good for polyps as of now.

I used Neilmed sinus rinse with five or ten drops of tea tree oil. The results were good with polyps dislodging and cleared my breathing. I have now stopped temporarily as the rinse started to reach my ear canal. Although this was very effective, I am going to try an oil droplet mix next after at least a one month break, possibly three months.

Nasal Polyps

I tried Tea Tree Oil with carrier Coconut Oil for my nasal problem. I had lost sense and could not smell for long time. I tried TTO 5 drops with COO 10 drops and I regained smell and fragrances recognition within 24 hours onwards. My nasal polyps are very large and have tried TTO & COO for last 3 days.

I have to wait to tell my experience regarding shedding and reduction of my nasal polyps.

Use any pure coconut oil without any additives. First try double drops of coconut oil drops count with tea tree oil. slowly you may change the ratio as per your comfort level. I am following this line.

I have been using a castor oil carrier with tea tree oil 10ml to 10 drops twice a day for a month now, I haven't noticed any improvement in fact it seems slightly worse but this may be the progression of the condition. I have also tried adding ACV to the Neil Med nasal rinse without any improvement but did not persevere with this as I found it unpleasant and seemed to irritate the polyps making them worse.

I'm getting a bit desperate now as I have tried the usual steroid nasal sprays etc, a salicylate free diet, Chinese herbs, Enhanced oxygen therapy, Salt caves, TTO, and ACV. I have been diagnosed with Samters Triad which seems to have been brought on by a three week visit to China four years ago where I stayed in a very polluted part of the country.

I think my immune system is still fighting the pollution I experienced in China rather than me having a sinus infection.

I suppose my next course of action will be to try gluten free, dairy free and low/no sugar diets.

Does anyone have any suggestions.

I think tea tree oil is too strong esp inside a nose . What we should strive for is to administer natural remedies that are effective without causing great discomfort to yourself .
I think.....you should change your strategy to using turmeric powder . Turmeric is known for centuries for its many beneficial uses. Mix with water to make paste and insert it onto the trouble spot!!!! continue every day 3 times...see what happen .
It should dry up and don't peel the scab!!!! let it heal!!.
Stop blowing too hard!!!.
If possible....draw all phlegm to the back of the throat and cough it out!!!!.
Good luck!!!!.

i have samters also and haven't been able to smell anything. Let me know if you find a way to smell again. Also why do you think the salicylate free diet didn't work? I thought that was the main cause of the symptoms?

I applied tea tree oil directly to the nose polyp via Q-tip and it went away three days later with no hassle. I tried Heavy doses of garlic with no success and antibiotics which worked till it stopped working and this worked the fastest!

I had the polyp for four years.

Tea tree oil and apple cider vinegar treatment for nose polyps

For 6 days now I have been administering tea tree oil mixed with olive oil to my husbands nostrils with ear buds. Twice a day. Two wipes per nostril as high as it is comfortable for him. They have shrunk and have receded much further up his nose. I can barely see them now. More importantly his passages are both clear and he can breathe.

He has also been taking some generic allergy tablets...two in am and two in pm. He has also been drinking apple cider vinegar every evening...a small shot glass.

Tea Tree oil oh ya

Did the q-tip with 50/50 WATER/Tea Tree Oil - stuck them in all the way so the other end was just popping out of both sides for 30 min. And wow after dealing with this for 3 years it cleared up, now I am gonna do prednisone to open it all up so I can get up to the top so I can smell again an start rinsing the rest out. Great group on here.

I would not use prednisone if they have already shrunk so that you can breathe - it is only for short-term use and has some nasty side effects. I would do a nasal rinse with Tea Tree Oil to reach farther and it should help to finish the polyps. Then I would just continue to use a nasal rinse once a day to keep them away.

I have been using the castor oil and tea tree recipe for about a month. I was previously at my ear nose and throat Dr. last week and I was worried how it would go, to my surprise and the Doctor's, it went better than I thought. In July my polyps were extensive and now at the end of September my left side he could barely find them! I've been fighting these for years and been on every Nasal spray and now I'm not!
