Why Lugol's Iodine is Essential for Optimal Health

I began taking Lugol's iodine 2 percent last week (5 days ago) under the tongue 2 drops a day. I began using this this because I have a load of skin issues and other ailments I will address. This is what changes I have experienced so far...

I have blisters all over my palms and fingers and finger nail fungus. My hands exploded with tons more painful blisters and sensitivities/ fungus went rampant (getting worse before better for 3 days)... then all of them dried up. Now my hands look really dry like I used bleach to clean without gloves. I keep finding little spots all over my body like I dropped Elmer's white glue and they flake off. Not sure what was there to begin with that needed to go away.

I also have had many ailments described as what iodine deficiency does to some people and this is a small list of issues I have had: Fatigue, weight gain, sugar cravings, enlarged thyroid (no prescription meds), cysts, yeast, pimples, irregular women's cycles heavy or none, to mention some. Through research on Earth Clinic, Iodine should fix this, hopefully.

I did notice some improvement in energy, my skin seems to be clearing. I have also used it topically on a row of 5 moles on my neck, no bandaid just putting it on each morning. They are shriveled up a little so I know it is working. I am just going to keep applying. I will update soon.

You can make your own distilled water with tap water. RAIN WATER CONTAINS CONTAMINATES COLLECTED FROM THE AIR. Search YouTube: How to make distilled water. It says use a clean, big tall stainless steel pot as others can contaminate. Add tap water 1/4 up from bottom. Put a glass bowl which floats higher than the water level in. Place the clean lid upside down on top of the pot. Get a bag of ice ready. Turn the stove on to a boil. Put ice cubes on top of lid. The steam will rise, hit the cold lid, n drip distilled water into bowl. When the ice cubes melt, use a potholder n empty the lid. Don't let the distilled water in the bowl boil so lower the heat. Keep repeating with ice until u hv the amount of distilled water that u need. Use a big lid so u can put a bunch of ice on. Turn off the stove, let cool and use a clean ladle to put the distilled water in a mason jar. Place it in a dark storage/cabinet. Good luck!

I applied Lugol's 5% to a skin tag twice daily for a month and it was gone, never to return. Caution, don't apply it on a cotton ball or anything like that and tape it to the skin, it will blister.

I had the sore throat and coughing also when I first started taking the Lugol's in water. I stopped because of it for over a year. Now I am taking 16 drops in my morning shake and don't even notice any problems at all. Try taking with something besides just water.

I've never heard of anyone talk of 'drinking' Lugol's Iodine. It is added to water (not tap), by the drop - a tiny amount. If it's Lugol's iodine, it will say it on the label; if it only says 'BP' then it's not Lugol's - Lugol's is a recognised process of making and mixing iodine and iodide, not a brand name.

I posted previously about this subject. I got an old eye drops bottle - tiny. Cleaned it and put 1/4 of Lugol's (I used 7%) but 5% will be ok. Fill up the rest of the bottle with cooled, boiled water and then stick the dropper bit back on. I put 3 drops, into the ears 3 times a day for the next 4 days and the pain from a severe ear infection, tinnitus and deafness all vanished, never to return. That was several years ago and it still hasn't returned, and had suffered every year, for many years, and it was untouchable by antibiotics. It should work against a fungal infection, too. Lugol's is always in my cupboard. I also got rid of a urine infection last year with it.

B.P. stands for British Pharmaceutical so it sounds like it's safe for human consumption. However it may need to be diluted with distilled water.

I bought a bottle of this recently and have been researching whether it's safe to drink.

Look up BP USP EP.

Hope this helps

I agree - it does taste dreadful! :(

Ear Infection
Posted by Jacqueline (Devon) on 03/26/2016

Hi Mmsg,

I don't know, as my tinnitus was purely a side effect of the ear infection, so of course, it vanished when the infection did. No harm in trying it, as technically, it's external use. Try and find something on curezone or earthclinic that might guide you.

Topical Application of Lugol's Iodine
Posted by Jacqueline (Devon) on 02/12/2016

Hi, I used a Lugols solution in boiled, cooled water in an previous-eye drops bottle. I 1/4-filled the bottle with Lygol's 7% (you might need slightly more for 5%), and then topped up the bottle with the sterile water. I then applied 3 drops x 3 times a day.

This completely cured a severe ear infection, causing deafness and tinnitus and severe pain, that I'd had for 4 months (I used to get it every winter). This ear infection had survived 3 courses of antibiotics, but it didn't survive the iodine drops. I have never had an ear infection in the 7 years since.

As Lugols is effective against yeasts and fungus, I it's certainly worth trying, and won't do any harm. Something you should be aware of though, is don't apply it if you have an open sore or wound, as the iodine will cause intense stinging and might prevent the wound from healing. If the skin is intact, then it's ok.

Lorraine: You show many signs of toxicity. Iodine increases cell voltage which sorta-like supercharges cells into recovery, which enables them to "throw off" or displace toxins stored from weak conditions. Since your digestive system, especially the lower or colon, cannot properly excrete these toxins they are recirculated back into the bloodstream and ending up on the surface or your skin. All this condition is called "herxheimer reaction" and is the first step of the healing process.

Your next step in recovery is cleaning & optimizing the digestive system. Under the "Ailments" or "Remedies" E.C. section at top page, go to Gallstones, Parasites, and Colon.

This takes some time & commitment so feel free to come back and post your progress and for some extra help you may need in this endeavor.

Just read comments about iodine. Can you help me please!

I started using Lugol's iodine from Amazon, it states external use, so I started to apply it on the skin, starting with one drop a day. The patch went after few hours. I increased to two drops a day, then three drops a day over a period of about six weeks. The patch still disappears before twenty four hours! On average between sixteen to twenty hours.

However, where I was putting the iodine on my skin, inner leg, I have got a itch rash now, lumpy and also two or three dark spots and I have come out in a couple of facial spots which is unusual for me. I have had some metal taste in my mouth, but not sure whether that was anything to do with iodine as that happened a few days after I stopped taking it!

If it is true that your deficient if the skin patch goes before twenty four hours then it suggests I am deficient still with three drops a day, but now I have this itchy skin. What can I do? I did drop down to one drop and the skin patch went quicker, so I am not sure how I can get it into my body now I have had this skin reaction! I am reluctant to take in orally as its states external use, although some people on Amazon have reviewed the product and said they take it orally.

I have dodgy digestive system so I have to be careful, I have severe M.E my body is very fragile.

Why would I get this skin reaction after six weeks! Any ideas how to proceed please!

If water evaporates from Lugol's the solution will become more concentrated and one drop (generally = 0.05ml) will contain more than 6.25mg of total Iodine + Iodide in a drop. But keeping the bottle covered should make this not a problem.

I buy Lugols regularly in Australia I have purchased it in Canberra and Adelaide. To succeed you must find a compounding chemist. Read the label carefully, mine is named Aqueous Iodine Solution APF. It contains Iodine 5%w/v and Potassium Iodide 10% w.v. In all cases I have purchased it the chemist has not made it, the brand is "David Craig Galenicals". When you actually get to talk to a pharmacist they will know what you are looking for. I have never found a helpful chemist who will direct you to another chemist who sells it. When asked why you want it the safest approach (which was true in my case) was to say that the doctor says my thyroid is a little low. When asked do you know how to take it it is 16 drops per day for 2 months and then 2 drops a day as a maintenance dose. Everyone is happy and then use it as you like. It must have both types of iodine to be Lugols solution and it is fantastic stuff.

Hi there,

I used to get horrendous ear infections a few years ago. After 3, ineffective, courses of antibiotics and 4 months of near complete deafness, pain and tinnitus, I decided to use my Lugols 7%. that I had used orally a year or so previously.. I got an old eye dropper and cleaned it out with boiling water. I filled it 1/4 full of Lugol's and the rest with the boiled, cool water. I put 3 drops, into the ears 3 times a day for the next 4 days. The pain vanished completely, my hearing returned and the noises went away, never to return.

I got the idea to try this from reading a clinical trial conducted on children in the remore African bush, obviously far from the nearest doctor. They administered the Lugol's neat, and 10 drops a day, but I thought that sounded a bit harsh, so adapted down. They had complete resolution of ear infections, even supporating inner ear infections; they all went away - the trial must still be on the internet somewhere.

Hope this has been helpful. I know that if I ever get a painful ear again, I won't be going to the doctor, I'll sort it myself.

Hi Fats1964...The amount of iodine per drop would also depend on what percentage strength lugols iodine you are using(which you never mentioned). Lugol's and Vitamin C
Posted by Bill (San Fernando) on 02/28/2015

Hi Diane...In answer to your question -- it really depends on what benficial action you want from the lugol's iodine.

Ted rightly advises that you should take lugols iodine (LI) with vitamin C on a health basis. Taking it like this beneficially increases the electrons or negative onductivity in your body and therefore increases the alkalinity of the body with many other attending benefits from vitamin C. Now I'm going to get a bit technical to show you another benefit of this mix. LI consists of molecular iodine plus potassium iodide in water. But if you add drops of LI to vitamin c in solution then the molecular iodine will all converted to iodide and that's why the solution goes clear. Not only that, but the molecular iodine oxidizes some of the vitamin c and converts it to dehydroascorbic acid(DHA). This is highly beneficial because DHA is absorbed into the body more quickly and in much greater amounts than ordinary vit c or ascorbic acid. What's more ordinary vit c cannot penetrate the blood/bone or blood brain barrier whereas DHA can.

The main reason for taking LI on it own with just water is to supply both the molecular ione form and the iodide form to satisfy your whole body's daily need for iodine/iodide. For example, the thyroid can only absorb the iodide form whereas a woman's breasts(and some other organs) need to absorb it in the molecular iodine form. Every cell in the body needs and uses iodine/iodide. Therefore, in this instance, if your whole body(incl. thyroid) is iodine deficient then you should take just the Lugol's Iodine Protocol shown here.

Just finally to also clarify the myth where some people still actually believe that all you need to do to heal iodine deficiency in the thyroid is just to take small doses of the iodide form. But what many people tend to forget is that if their thyroid is deficient in iodine then their whole body will also be deficient in iodine/iodide as well. Remember that every cell in your body needs and uses iodine/iodine. To illustrate the importance of this -- the thyroid needs to store about 50 mgs of iodine per day for proper operation. The rest of the body(excl. the thyroid) needs to store about 1500 mgs of iodine per day to remain healthy. That means that the rest of the body needs to store 1500/50 = 30 times more iodine than the thyroid. And so if you think of your low iodine problem as just being purely a thyroid problem then I'm afraid that you will have missed the boat entirely with your own thinking. So if you do have a thyroid problem then you should logically always act to satisfy the whole body's need for iodine/iodide as well.

You could also be suffering a Herxheimer reaction from Candida die-off, which will pass, but don't stop the iodine. You may consider salt loading with unrefined salt, 1/2 tsp. in water or licked, dissolved on tongue and washed down with 8+oz of plain water. This is designed to help eliminate toxins in urine but stimulating copious urination within the hour. If it doesn't do that the first time, it is ok to repeat the procedure up to two additional tries for a total of 3 times in 12 hours, which is just precaution to prevent overloading on sodium. Drink plenty of water. Also, you could take extra Vit.C and magnesium to fight this detox episode.

If dose is relative to weight, the equivalent dose to 20mg for a 200lb man, would be 0.3mg for a 3lb dog [20/200 = x/3 ] and [ (20*3)/200 = 0.3 ]

To measure out 0.3mg iodine in terms of oz. of water:

Since one drop of Lugols 5% is about 6.3mg total iodine, put one drop in about 10oz of water and dispense only 1/2 oz for the dog for about 0.315mg total iodine.

If using Lugols 2%, one drop is about 2.5mg total iodine. One drop in 10oz of water, dispense about 1.5 oz for about 0.37mg total iodine

For higher doses, multiply the amounts of dilute Lugols in water above.

Lugols in the 5% strength is dispensed by the drop, with each drop containing approx. 6.5mg of total iodine. Ask your pharmacist for a standard medicine dropper. Dispense by holding it vertically, barely squeeze the bulb to allow a natural drop to form and drop by gravity into your 3-4 oz. of water, repeat for the number of drops you require. Drink it down, followed by enough plain water to rinse your mouth, throat and esophagus and get rid of the taste. The doctors who have revived the use of iodine recommend a maintenance dose of between 12 and 50mg to achieve and maintain adequate iodine stores throughout the body and deal with the toxic load we face in our modern world.

Your liquid iodine I am assuming is Lugols Solution. Vit.C, more properly known as ascorbic acid, reacts immediately with elemental iodine in a redox reaction that changes some or all of the elemental iodine into iodide. The issue is not that you lose all benefit by mixing with Vit.C, since the iodide form is used by some tissues, like Thyroid. But you lose some or all of the elemental iodine form when you mix Lugols with Vit.C, and, in turn, you lose some or all of the benefit of the elemental form in that dose that is apparently required or preferred by many tissues, such as breast, ovaries, and prostate. BTW, Kelp acts as a seawater filter and picks up relatively high concentrations of toxins, including arsenic, which is why it really is not a good source of iodine.

From what I remember reading at the time, it was considered safe. This would be transdermal, and maybe a good way to go, depending on what your dogs health challenges are.

Lugol's Iodine Companion Nutrients
Posted by Lauren (Tucson, Arizona) on 01/17/2015
★★★★★

Iodine has wonderful health benefits and you must take the companion nutrients along with it in order for it to be beneficial -- otherwise you will most probably have health problems. It is imperative to add this information and information on the salt loading protocol to the main description of iodine on this earth clinic site, to avoid people having problems with iodine and perpetuating the myth that iodine is bad for you. Please, if you have privileges to do that, do your research and add information on the the hyper-importance of the companion nutrients and salt loading to the description of iodine.

The companion nutrients are: selenium (200 to 600 micrograms); magnesium (400 - 600 milligrams); Vitamin C (3,000 to 10,000 milligrams); 1/2 teaspoon unrefined salt per day. If a person has autoimmune thyroid disease they would add Vitamins B2 and B3 - 100 mg riboflavin and 500 mg niacin, 1-2x per day. (People with autonomous nodule (toxic nodule) of the thyroid should not take iodine, so it is important for people with thyroid nodules to find out if the nodule is caused by Graves' Disease or a toxic nodule (Toxic Multinodular Goiter) -- see Grave's remission case report on jeffreydachmd.com).

If you want to avoid the flush from niacin (the flush is not a health problem, but some people prefer not to experience it), then go with the niacinimide form (inositol hexanicotinate); stay completely away from the "timed release" or slow release forms of B3 as they have caused problems.

Iodine, which is very good for health, is in the same category of elements as bromide, chlorine, and fluoride, which are toxic to the human body. This category is called halogens -- they all go to the same receptors in our cells. We are surrounded by the toxic halogens, contained, for example, in our water supply and in things like flame retardant on mattresses. If a person has toxic halogens stored in their cells, when they take iodine, the iodine will begin to displace the toxic halogens, kicking them back into the bloodstream, and then the kidneys will excrete them through the urine. If the toxic halogens start hanging out in the bloodstream for a while before the kidneys can excrete them, they can cause a whole host of detox symptoms, so it is important to know that taking half a teaspoon of unrefined salt in 8 ounces of water, followed immediately by 12 ounces clear, filtered water will help the kidneys flush the toxic halogens right away (the sodium binds with the halogens). See breastcancerchoices.org for the salt-loading protocol as well as a list of bromide detox symptoms and iodine-literate practitioners. This is one reason why some people get confused and think they are "allergic" to iodine -- they take iodine without companion nutrients or without doing the salt push should they experience bromide detox.

One way to avoid detox symptoms altogether is to take one drop of 5% Lugol's solution per day, along with the companion nutrients, for one week. The next week increase to 2 drops per day, and so on, until reaching 16 drops per day, which is 100 milligrams of iodine. Another way, which I am less familiar with but which is described at curezone.com, is to start right away with 16 drops of Lugol's 5% (100 milligrams iodine) or iodine in pill form, per day. Some people have experienced freedom from asthma using that dose. See curezone for that info as well as the other conditions that have iodine has affected positively. It can take quite a while at 100 milligrams (or more) per day to reach a state of iodine sufficiency. The length of time it takes depends on how ill a person is, for example it might take 6 months for a healthy person, or 3 years for someone with cancer. Once sufficiency is reached, the protocol is to drop down to a maintenance dose of, say, 50 mg per day.

Good sources of information on iodine are optimox.com (lots of medical articles), steppingstonesliving.com, which has a free download guide to supplementing with iodine, curezone.com and the iodine yahoo group. Hakalalabs.com offers iodine testing.

I'd really like to see someone knowledgeable address this disparity, because I just started a 1 drop daily morning regimen which I carefully time to wait 1/2 hour to take my vit c afterwards. (which I used to just mix directly in my morning coffee/tea, along with turmeric, etc. And a pile of everything else! :-) Decades including kelp and red algae, so now I am very confused.

Does that mean I never got the iodine from latter because took same time as Vit C? This is a person who also loves her seaweed in soups, beans, etc.

Yet my iodide patch disappears within hours. Comments welcome, many thanks again!

Thank you again!

Lugol's and Irradiation
Posted by Jenn (Coborra, Australia) on 01/11/2015

Lugol's and irradiation..

If it was proper Lugols it would have come in dark glass...also iodine is one of the treatments for radiation...and quite frankly I'd worry more about the air I was breathing than worrying about radiation in the atmosphere..it's been here since day one and will be here long after we've gone...

Topical Application of Lugol's Iodine

As a follow up to Virginia's question, I would like to ask if Lugol's can be used as drops in the ears to treat fungal infection. And at what concentration, 2%, 5%?Thanks.

Lugol's and Vitamin E
Posted by Bcnu147 (Wa, US) on 01/04/2015

Some years ago, reading the book Adelle Davis wrote called, Let's Get Well, I came across what she said about Lugol's Iodine. She said that if Lugol's Iodine is not taken with Vitamin E, the thyroid only takes up about 5% but if it is taken with Vitamin E, it takes up as much as 95%. This was crucial information for me because at that time, I had hashimoto's thyroiditis. I made her High Protein drink every morning to which I added these and then drank a couple of ounces every couple of hours.

Many people have criticised Adelle Davis in the past and labelled her as a 'quack.' If they check out her credentials, they should realise she was NOT.

She was a qualified Biochemist, who cared enough about people, to work as a dietician in order to help them directly.

Transdermal Absorption
Posted by Stan (Huntsville, Al) on 11/22/2014

Are there parts of the body that are better for transdermal absorption of Lugol's than others?

For instance; the armpits --which may (or may not) provide of side benefit of deodorizing. The commercial holistic deodorants (such as Toms) don't work for me; but apple cider vinegar, milk of magnesia and baking soda do quite well. I'm thinking that a solution of Lugol's plus Oil of Magnesium (Magnesium Chloride) might serve multiple benefits.

Would appreciate any experience-based comments.

Stan

A sudden surge in the Iodine supplementation will cause Itchy throat and coughing. Till the body adapts you have to moderate the dosage.

Many thanks for putting this wealth of info together for all of us. You've no doubt helped so many! Would you please share how much niacin and zinc you would recommend taking per day? Also, any recommendations for a good mineral supplement that can provide all/ most of the daily essentials?

Something else which might interest people who live in the US.

Selenium is vital for the production of glutathione peroxidase(GP) in the body which is essential and critical for both liver health and thyroid health. GP is also vital for the body's detox pathways.

So here is a particularly interesting map showing selenium deficient areas in the US (which are colored dark blue):

Selenium Deficient Soils -- US

So anyone living and eating food in the dark blue areas of the US will most likely be selenium deficient.

Hi Sunitha...I'm sorry that you're having problems with the iodine protocol, but this is quite common in the West where people have been eating poor processed food for decades.

When you supplement lugols iodine, two problems can occur:

* If you don't bother to take all the iodine companion nutrients exactly as advised then you probably will have problems. These companion nutrients are critical to ensure that vital enzymes and catalysts are present so that the iodine is correctly absorbed, converted, assimilated and used in the thyroid and used throughout the rest of the body. So if you don't take these companion nutrients then you may well have problems(which are usually all due to a poor processed food diet -- lacking in these nutrients). The essential reasons for taking the iodine companion nutrients are all explained here and here.

* Iodine is also a magnificent detoxer so, when you take iodine, it will help to remove cadmium, aluminum, mercury, lead, arsenic, bromine and fluorine from your cells and will dump these poisons directly into the blood. Consequently, all sorts of other side-effects are possible from iodine detox which is wholly dependent on your own high poison intake from your processed food diet and lifestyle. I also suspect that you are having bromine detox symptoms -- see this link.

To confirm what heavy metal and halide poisons you have in your body, I would also advise that you simply get a hair analysis done(quite cheap). This will tell you your body's heavy metal and halide poison status.

If you suspect that your body is high in heavy metals then I would supplement liquid cilantro drops and chlorella. To get rid of fluorine and bromine, you should take lugols iodine(with all companion nutrients) in amounts that are low and slow. The Borax Protocol also helps to get rid of fluorine.

For now, I would stop your iodine protocol and just take the iodine companion nutrients as advised for a week then restart your protocol at low dose initially. If that doesn't work then I would do a serious heavy metal detox for at least a month then retry the full iodine protocol again.

I have been taking 8 drops of 5% Lugols Iodine every day for the last 8 years without any problems. I'm pretty sure that my own heavy metal and halide status are at healthy low levels and not a problem and I always take the iodine companion nutrients at their correct dosages to avoid any further problems.

Hi

I have hypothyroid and Candida issues. So, I started on the Lugols Iodine protocol + Accompanying Nutrients + Alkalizing protocol suggested by Bill Thompson 4 days back. Today is day 4.

On Day 2, I noticed that my tongue was was turning a little brown. Day 3 - yesterday, I am having a little bit of throat discomfort. Today, I am having severe discomfort in the throat and cough as well.

Please suggest what needs to be done to mitigate the issues. Is it time to take a break for next 2 days or should I add something to the protocol? I am doing 2 drops of Lugols (5% - J.Crow's lugols Iodine) once a day.

Thanks

Iodine Warnings

★★★★★

I get heart palpitations when I drink coffee or tea. It's the caffeine for me. So I add a bit of organic BLACKSTRAP MOLASSES to my coffee. That prevents me from having heart palpitations. BSM contains several minerals, which coincides with your theory that heart palpitations are as a result of a mineral deficiency.

It sounds like you have a B12 deficiency. Please investigate yourself (Weston Price Foundation). Kind regards, C

Where to Buy: Canada
Posted by Om (Hope, Bc Canada) on 09/15/2014

B31 --- Where to buy Lugol's Iodine in Canada.

I was unsuccessful online but went to London Drugs and was told by a manageress, No. But as I proceeded to another department, a senior lady employee made haste to inform me that not only London Drugs, but any pharmacy could order it if it is LUGOL'S IODINE SOLUTION. They order from the same company.

So it is indeed best to speak to a top senior employee first. I am happy that there is a possibility to obtain it despite gov't interference. Otherwise Tony Pantalleresco online teaches how to make it yourself.

Namaste, Om
