Sauerkraut

I have had chronic diarrhea off and on for years. I have tried most of the suggestions posted here but none comes close to what I recently discovered. I bought a jar of raw, fermented, and unpasteurized sauerkraut from my local health food store (in the refrigerated section). I tried in that same afternoon (probably eating more than I should--more about that later). The next morning I was in "stool heaven"... no diarreah in sight, and I went about 3 times that day and really cleaned myself out.
Here's what I learned: you don't need to eat a whole lot of the sauerkraut, just a nice forkful...I am trying it out once a day, but I think as I go along, maybe just 3 forkfuls a week would be OK because you don't want to upset the balance of the good and bad bacteria in your gut. I am thrilled with this finding. Several weeks before my "gastro doc" prescribed Cholesdtyramine for oral suspension. It's a powder that you mix with water or juice. That did work for about 3 days and it was back to diarreah. Anyway, it messes up your cholesterol and bile and who wants that? Please try this natural, easy to eat sauerkraut and let everyone know who you do. Thanks for reading.
SIBO Connection

If probiotic drinks and yogurt trigger your IBS, then it's possible you have SIBO.
I suffered from IBS for years, becoming more and more of a shut-in because I couldn't go anywhere without a bathroom close by. I then read an article* that stated 80% of IBS sufferers actually have SIBO (small intestinal bacterial overgrowth).
If you have SIBO, normally beneficial bacteria migrate from your colon into your small intestine and wreak havoc there. The irony about this is that those bacteria are... lactobacillus and bifidobacillus, i.e., the exact bacteria you find in nearly all probiotics, yogurt, kefir, etc.!!!
In other words, if you have SIBO, all the orthodox remedies for IBS are only feeding it and you will feel worse and worse the more probiotics you take/eat. I'd always felt that way, so I immediately stopped taking my probiotics and eating most dairy.
No more yogurt, kefir, cottage cheese, milk, etc., only a small amount of snack cheese slices here and there. Instead, I started taking probiotics, which consist of completely different strains derived from cultured, clean soil and have nothing to do with lacto- or bifidobacillus.
Within about four weeks, I was symptom-free. It was like a miracle. I still get the occasional bout of diarrhea—maybe once every two weeks—but nothing like before, where I could barely leave the house.
Of course, I can't promise that you have SIBO and that this will work for you, but if you do, you might get your own little miracle.

Awesome!
Could you please share which strains your probiotic contained, how much of each strain per capsule, and how many capsules you took daily? My son had an emergency surgery as an infant to remove an intestinal obstruction, and he lost half his small bowel, illeocecal valve, and appendix. So he needs something to help keep his intestines in balance - being the small bowel that remains is now open to the colon (no valve to separate). Thank you!

Hi Cathie from Nebraska –
I'm not Marnie, but there was a mention of a soil-based probiotic in the article by Dr. Amy Myers (her own brand) referenced in Sylvie13fromUSA's posting on Earth Clinic. The article is “10 Signs You Have Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO)” – here is the link that Sylvie provided:
https://www.amymyersmd.com/2018/04/10-signs-small-intestinal-bacterial-overgrowth-sibo/
On this page, Dr. Myers talks about the different strains useful for SIBO. https://www.amymyersmd.com/2018/02/soil-based-probiotics-best-sibo/ However, a site called SIBO Survivor might be more useful to you.
There is an article on the best probiotics for SIBO so there is more variety to help make a decision. All are available on Amazon.com when the article was posted. https://sibosurvivor.com/best-probiotics-sibo/
Good luck – hopes this helps.

Hi Cathie,
Yes, I found Dr. Axe's SBO Probiotic. It contains “soil based” organisms. If you do decide to order another brand on Amazon, make sure you're double checking who the seller is. Many sellers are peddling counterfeit products (and many are selling from overseas). However, in many cases it is Amazon itself who is the seller. It will say “sold by Amazon.com.”
I believe Garden of Life was one of the original makers of of soil based probiotic supplements. They were bought by Nestle ,unfortunately. So I don't trust their products anymore.
Slippery Elm

Slippery Elm is the most potent helper to IBS that we have found. It's available in capsule form just about anywhere. My husband had IBS previously and I had never had it up until last night, and I think the thing that I ate that was different possibly was a Stevia/Erythritol sugar replacement. We already eat a very clean diet, and this was the first time I had had this type of sugar replacement, which I thought was safe. Of course I don't know for sure if that's what's caused it, I just know the Slippery Elm has helped me stop running to the bathroom. It also worked for a friend recently
Turmeric

I am 53 y/o and tried Turmeric to loose weight and found it has many AMAZING side effects. I have had horrible irritable bowel since I was 7 y/o. I mean horrible. It will bring me to my knees and make me throw up, forcing me to choose which end should be aimed at toilet. The Turmeric not only assisted in losing weight but stopped my irritable bowel/spastic colitis DEAD IN ITS TRACKS - NONE. I had never experienced a day without pain in my colon. OMG it was amazing.
Turmeric

have the indian spice turmeric on hand for emergencies. Usually IBS has a lot to do with our emotional well-being and suggests something is or many things are stressing us and we need to make changes in ourselves. However becoming perfect can take more than a life time so i recomend turmeric, i swallow half a teaspoonfull when I have a bad case of IBS and in half an hour I am much better. Only thing is as with lots of cures natural and pharmaceutecal, if the IBS keeps coming back eventually the effect of the turmeric or other cure is lessened. what it gives us is a chance to feel better while we try to solve the underlying problems.

Valerian

I have to give this one a nay. I have in the past been able to take this herb with no problems as a sleep aid, but ever since my gastrointestinal problems got worse, I can't take Valerian without experiencing an IgE response. I can't see how this would possibly be healing to the gut given that reaction, and I would use it with extreme caution if you do have similar problems.
Valerian

I have been taking a 450mg valerian root capsule each night before bed for the past week and it has led to a marked improvement in my IBS-C symptoms. It might be due to the fact that valerian has a slowing/calming effect on the body and has allowed my digestive system to relax somewhat. The one night I missed a dose, my crampy/gurgly symptoms started coming back during the day, so I am positive that it's the valerian that is helping.
Vegan Diet

I had suffered from IBS for years and years since I was about 11. It got to be so bad that my lower intestine enlarged to a point where it was pushing up against my stomach and causing severe pain. What really seemed to help me is to take a capsule of flax seed oil with a meal along with a glass of water. It made it so that I was regular. In recent years, I've been doing research on just how many illnesses are related to the consumption of animals and their byproducts such as cheese and the like. In an effort to become a healthier and more compassionate person, I became a vegan and it has done so much for me!! Not only has it completely cleared up the IBS, but numerous other things such as hypoglycemia, acne, made my skin more healthy and radient, made my nails harder, I get a more restful night's sleep, I have a TON more energy, etc. I cannot say enough about how much becoming a vegan has helped my health but the most drastic of a chsnge that I have found is the IBS. Within literally two days I was regular without the help of anything. I didn't have to watch what I ate to make sure that everything would be okay either. It was and is awesome! About an hour after I eat I have to go and it is the biggest relief! I hope those of you with IBS take my advice seriously and just think about cutting at least some of the animal products out of your diet.

Vitamin D

I have acid reflux and also have concurrent IBS. My IBS has been helped greatly by a high dose vitamin D. I took a lower dose vitamin D and it didn't help.
Water

I also had trouble drinking water in the past. I just didn't care for water unless I was really thirsty, only I did not get all that thirsty for water. I also suffered from Irritable bowel syndrome badly.
I found that if I take a glass jar (like from a jelly or a jam product and clean it thoroughly, I can fill it with ordinary tap water but I must place the glass of water in the refrigerator (not the freezer). For some reason I love the water cold? Then I can drink it like crazy! But remember that the cold water can give you a sore throat so allow the refrigerated water out of the refrigerator before drinking it for awhile so that the water is not too cold, it will still be cold enough to drink and enjoy. Now that I drink refrigerated water, my irritable bowel syndrome isn't bothering me anymore!
Just letting others know what works for me with drinking plenty of water.
Wheatgrass Powder

Wheatgrass Powder for IBS! John suffers from irritable bowel syndrome , and sometimes he get shocking stomach cramps and diarrheah. After years of suffering, he have finally found something that works. Buy some wheatgrass powder from the health food store and mix up a double or triple dose of it with water and drink, followed by a glass of plain water. The taste may be awful, but the instant relief makes it soooo worth it!!!!!!

Hi,
i too have suffered IBS all related to my anxiety! I have anemia too & to make a long story short, was in and out of the hospital because it got so bad that I couldn't even keep an apetite! I got down to 70 pounds! I was diagnosed with anorexia from being unable to eat for so long.
Dr put me through surgery immediately for endometriosis. Then put me on Donnatal for the IBS & ive been on donnatal for about 7-9 months now & I am a totally new person. I started an entire life for once! Im only 20 & started getting ill at 16! So until this year, I was unable to live a 20 yr old's life. I was stuck at home for all those yrs. Until now. I was miserable & I truly wanted nothing more than to die.
so, the donnatal was a miracle drug for me. I hated the idea of having to take pills. It literally repulsed me, but after taking them, the benefits outweighed the risks by a long shot. I can actually live! I was able to enroll in an amazing college for writer's that I was accepted into and have been doing assignments (home & online) for the past 9 months! It's amazing. I nearly cry just thinking about how much ive changed.
I hear my B/F & fam say I'm a totally diff. Person and happy all the time!
So, I've had maybe 7 flare ups since taking donnatal & all the flare ups started when my sis moved in & it was just a serious load of overwhelming stress & I started having those flare-ups. I eventually had to distance myself from these fam members and havent had probs since! I notice flare ups though, when I've been around them & theyve gotten me upset though.
I hate to write such a long comment, but I Wanted to say that I just started wheatgrass & I'm really thinking this stuff has got to be amazing!
I take it in pill form. The juice tastes awful. I get mine from A. M. ORGANICS online. SEARCH THEM! Look them up, and try them! I would'nt buy from any other so far. Also, you get such great deals! You can always get a little extra than what you purchase & that makes it much more pleasing!
