Acidophilus can effectively treat garden-varieties candida and yeast infections. Candida can manifest itself in many different ways, but a common way is it proliferates dramatically when antibiotics are taken. When the 'really nasty' things are allowed to proliferate when both good and bad bacteria are killed by antibiotics, that is candida but the doctors won't tell you that or how to fix it, and won't endorse the use of probiotics bc it effectively makes people well very cheaply. If you supplement with acidophilus immediately following an antibiotic course, you will greatly limit your reaction to the antibiotics. I recommend acidophilus/probiotic powders. Tablets and capsules likely have fillers and take longer to take effect.

Probiotic supplementation is needed after an antibiotic course if you are interested in mitigating the effects of the antibiotics. It is needed to replenish the beneficial flora the antibiotics kill off In another thread I speak of making yogurt a regular part of your diet to keep candida at bay, however that does not eliminate the need for additional probiotics following an antibiotic course. Regular use of probiotic powders or tablets have a place with anyone who is interested in their much longer shelf life than yogurt, or is not interested in consuming dairy products or their calories. Foods besides yogurt don't provide enough of a significant probiotic contribution, and to accomodate a maintenance level through food requires drastic changes. Instead, regular yogurt or probiotic use is much simpler and more convenient and less expensive.
There are probiotics that eat and live on fuguses like candida and yeast. Threelac is one. There maybe others. This stuff costs about a dollar a packet. This is expensive if you use much.
I have found that a probiotic culture can be grown on a medium of food grade brewers yeast and water. Brewers yeast is dead yeast cells that are high in protein and several vitamins and mineral. I have made yogart and buttermilk in the past and growing these cultures is very similar. The result is a sour thin liquid that tastes a little like buttermilk.
currently I use 2 cups of brewers yeast flakes in a gallon of water. To this I add a packet of the probiotics I want to grow. This will create a sour culture in 1 to 3 days. I then refrigerate the jug and drink as needed. In winter I have been culturing the liquid in an oven with the light on. Oven needs to be less than about 110 degrees farenheit.
I don't believe that this is a total cure for systemic candida infection but it is a start and should eliminate candida from the intestinal tract. When first starting this you need to be aware of the Herztheimer effect. Now I drink a cup every few days. I know I am not drinking enough if it causes my stomach to rumble within an hour or 2 of drinking. It does cause my eurin to be more yellow.
Brewers yeast is not delicious, and culturing makes it more sour. It is a good source of protein and nutrients. I get the flakes for about $16 a pound. That is at least 10 cups so I don't think of it as expensive because it is a food that enables me to eat grains and sugar that would not be allowed on a candida restricted diet.
I have been drinking this stuff for several years.
There is an probiotic that the japanese have developed called (three lac) and or (five lac) that is by far the best probiotic ive ever found for the problem of candiasis... It balanced my system in about three months... Along with taking a pascalite clay and psyillium supplement to clean and detox my intestinal tract. I also take ACV and diatomaceous earth on a regular basis for intestinal problems and black walnut for parasitic cleanses!!!
Have been taking probiotics for a couple of months now felt better but not quite there. Read about cider vinegar gave it a go. Been taking it everyday for 2 weeks. I feel 10 years younger.
Candida and beneficial bacteria: I have Candida as I took lots of penicillin over the years. When a friend who is an acupuncturist and Chinese Medicine doctor, began to help me, she had a stool sample sent to Great Smoky Labs. It came back very high for Candida and some of my bacteria was very low. And we need that bacteria in our systems to balance the Candida, and also specific bacteria. So she told me to go to health food stores and purchase the ones I needed and take them before addressing the Candida, to more ensure the Candida would not easily return. Ann
Probiotics are the best way to aleviate and eradicte Candida yeast infections. These attack people with many different symptoms. I give Threelac to my dog amd takes care of all yeast related problems. Also human consumptable.
Raw sauerkraut - I'm talking raw, not the pasteurized kind you buy on hot dogs and at supermarkets. Start with a tiny drop of it - like 1/2 teaspoon, even that small and build your way up. A small bit of it cleared up my sinuses that were congested for years. My guess is it has something to do with eliminating yeast. But if I take too much raw sauerkraut, I'll get stuffy (my guess is this is a detox/healing crisis type reaction). So you have to go slow if you find yourself having these types of reactions. Raw Sauerkraut works wonders for sinusitis and thrush because it gets rid of candida.
Hi all. Really interesting and helpful comments from everyone, thanks.
I have been struggling with a candida problem for about 6 years now. Sometimes I think I have it cured, but then get a relapse every now and then even though I maintain a fairly strict diet. I have had some successful with quite a few of the things evry mentions, caprylic acid, oregano, GSE, probiotics etc.
I am just undergoing a bad relapse but dont know why. However there are two things that I am still confused about even after masses of research and reading over the last 6 years, and I would love to know what others think.
1. Most antifungals are also antibacterial. People with Candida are trying to kill off fungus and encourage good bacteria, and are usually taking antifungals and probiotics at the same time. But I am wondering how this can work? Surely by taking antifungals which are also antibacterial the good bacteria are going to be killed off as well? And we are therefore wasting our money buying expensive probiotics that are just not going to survive? The anti bacterial antifungals cannot discriminate between pathogenic bacteria that need to be killed off and the good friendly bacteria that we desperately need to be healthy.
2. Am I right in saying that candida needs an acidic encironment in which to flourish (ie less than pH7)? So we are all trying to alkalise our bodies. However, I have an outbreak of vaginal thrush currently and most people seem to reccomend curing it by applying an acid of one sort or another ie apple cider vinegar or similar. But how can applying an acid kill off the candida if it prefers acidity? I am confused! I was also told by several 'experts' when I first became ill to avoid all vinegars because these feed yeast / candida, but perhaps this is incorrect?
If anyone can clarify / answer these points I would be most grateful!

i think that ACV makes you more alkaline when digested because of how you process it, even though it is an acid. I have also heard about applying ACV vaginally for a yeast infection and it didn't work for me. sticking some whole peeled cloves of garlic up there did seem to do something :)
Evie, I know your email was from 2008 and it is now 2012, perhaps you provided your email to EC and they will notify you of a response. First thing, how is your battle with Candida? You tackle the bugger finally?
I never knew what Candida was and have recently started to beat the turds out of it ;). With the help of Coconut oil, my thrush is 90% fixed. I have NEVER had a pink tounge since I can remember. My grandfather got me hooked on candy and all kinds of sweets at a very young age, and as I got older beer became a staple of my diet. Causing a massive outbreak. My intestinal Candida is another story which is still a tough battle.
As for your questions.
1. I think the best solution one can take when doing anti-fungal doseages with good bacteria dosages is not at the same time. What you say in theory to me is very sound. I would take your anti-fungals in the morning on an empty stomach. After an hour or so eat your breakfast then wait a couple hours and take your probiotics, since I believe they all should be taken on an empty stomach, so they can repopulate your intestinal track with the fungas you just eradicated. In the process the fungas should be in a weakend state and the probiotics will attack it even further. If you alternate back and forth rather then at the same time then I think the results will be alot better.
2. I personally do not do the apple cider vinegar that is all the rage. That is one of THE first treatments I went for when I found out what I had and it did nothing. IMO it made things way worse, which people say will happen, except things never got better, they kept getting worse and worse. To the point where I thought my constipation before treatment would have seemed like heaven because I didnt know what a bowel movement was after ACV. Maybe my body does not work like everyone and ACV works for them, but for me it was a no-no. Not trying to discourage people from trying ACV, and yes it was with the mother, since alot of people have posted success with it. Just don't let yourself get hospitalized just because you think you are going through Herx when you might be doing something worse. ;)
I completely agree with the Mike from Los Angeles' comment about candida and mercury. I had a myriad of health problems since the first time my mom sent me to the dentist in 4th grade. The candida issue was particularly pesky. My mercury research finally told me why- our bodies farm candida to absorb the mercury. That's why die-off symptoms are sometimes so debilitating- the candida is outgasing the mercury as well as other toxins.
I am suprised that people on this forum talk about the symptoms of candida and what to take - vinegar, supplements, etc but for those that have had persistent problems with this year no one has mentioned why some people get it and others don't. The one often overlooked fact is that these people have heavy metals and chemical toxicity. Although Uranium and then Lead are the most toxic metals, Mercury is the one metal that will do more damage to the bodies cell walls that all the other metals and chemicals. It is a metal detox people need to do to get rid of persistent candida and fatigue.
I would like to say that there are a lot of myths about candida. For one, they say vinegar is bad. I did a lot of research and found out that VINEGAR KILLS YEAST/MOLD, as per a scientific study. I wrote to the doctor who did the study. He used red wine vinegar and it killed over 90 percent of mold and mildew. Second, I now found that there is a candida antibody titer test that will medically determine via blood tests whether or not you have candida. I will post again after I go through the regimen my new doctor, who did the antibody test, recommends. I'll let you know how it goes.

I think it really depends on why a person has a candida overgrowth in the first place. I have been sick with candida overgrowth for several months. This was caused by taking too many courses of antibiotics. The antibiotics killed the good bacteria that competed with the fungi in my body. My point is- yes, vinegar is anti-fungal but it is also anti-bacterial (which is something I'd rather not mess with). Instead, I'm trying to work on increasing the levels of good bacteria in my body than risk killing off even more of it.
I am taking Spectro 3 vitamin/mineral supplement, magnesium taurate for the depression, extra calcium, B-50 complex for all the vitamins the candida depletes your body of, digestive enzymes to eat up all the waste material you are killing - with each meal and in between, a good probiotic to replenish the good bacteria an hour after each meal and at bedtime (read "You're Nuts Because of Your Guts" at Cure Zone.com, 70% of your immune system is in your digestive tract, 90% of Serotonin is made in your gastro-intestinal tract), coconut oil (Spectrum organic unrefined - has yeast defeating properties and is a medium chain fatty acid which is very good for you and is supposed to help you lose weight, read The Coconut Diet by Cherie Calbom), MSM (500 mg per 30 lbs. of body weight),I take 1000 mg(pure, no fillers) twice a day to help strip the mucous membranes where yeast live in and restore PH in your GI tract, liquid molybdenum (a mineral) to help break down the acetaldehyde toxin the yeast produces and Oxymune oxygen drops to help build the immune system even stronger, and gently bounce (do not take feet off) on a mini-trampoline to help clear toxins from my lymphatic system.
So far, my CFS and Fibromyalgia are much improved, the thrush in my mouth is losing its hold. Pink skin is starting to appear at bottom of a totally white coated tongue. Totally yeast infected ears are almost totally cleared up (intense itching and yucky yeast residue are gone) I am making slow but progressive progress.
My understanding is that this overgrowth of systemic candida is due to a suppressed immune system, however you got it; overuse of antibiotics, birth control pills, use of steroids (prednisone),etc., all the bad things doctors give us to help us get well have made millions of us terribly ill. I am doing everything I can to build up my immune system. Read Ed McCabe's book, "Flood Your Body with Oxygen", in which he explains over and over again how YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM RUNS ON OXYGEN. This disease is a parasite and you are the host, it thrives in an anerobic environment (no oxygen), and the more oxygen you force into your body, the weaker this parasite becomes, but you must keep at it every day and never give up. I once recovered from this terrible disease doing yoga morning and night for a half an hour at a time. I felt great for about 3 months -- I looked wonderful, I felt wonderful, I couldnt get sick no matter how many sick people I was exposed to, my immune system was that strong and then I quit the yoga thinking it was the MSM that had done the healing, so it's back to gentle exercising to build up the immune system. Excessive exercise will just depress your immune system even more. Read up on how yoga builds up the immune sytem and detoxifies the body through urination, elimination and sweating. I believe due to the constant deep intake of oxygen with the deep breathing involved in the yoga poses and the constant twisting and bending involved that detoxified my liver, kidneys, pancreas, etc. my immune system became so strong nothing could exist in my body but great health. I hope this helps someone.
Hi, I am a reflexologist in the UK. My client had candida for 2 years. the symptoms were terrible. In the UK, this pathogen is not acknowledged by most doctors as even 'existing' in the intestines. They just look in the mouth or down below and if its all clear you are told you can't possibly have candidiasis. For anyone who has this: a remedy. Do not think you can never eat sweet things again. But you must give up all forms of sugar including fruits until the infection is dead. Xylitol is sweet, you can make biscuits, cakes and all puddings with it but the yeast can't attach to its molecules and feed off of it. Look it up on the web to find suppliers. In addition, it KILLS candida. The diet is: no sugar, lay off wine and beer and caffeine. You can eat meat, vegetables, milk produts unless you are lactose intolerant, and wheat BUT it has to be BROWN WHEAT, WHOLEMEAL FLOUR, BROWN RICE etc. Don't eat processed food for a while, it mostly has sugar or refined flour. After a couple of months, the pathogen should be dead. Good Luck. This one can be cured for sure, I've seen it done and you don't have to starve yourself to death while starving the candida. Good luck,
God, how many more hours will I have to spend reading contradictory opinions on the internet before I feel like I am on the right path! All there is left is quinoa, millet, spelt, green veggies and flax seed oil! I am HUNGRY, and french!(no red wine)...Wheat greass is good, no wheat is allowed, is wheat grass equivalent to wheat? No vinegar, especially apple cider, yes apple cider is the cure, no potatoes and tomatoes, yes potatoes and tomatoes are allowed, no dairy, yogurt is the cure, have some everyday. Make up your minds!?! All I am eating now is steamed green soybeans with seaweed and flax oil, I am 95 pounds!!! HELP ? Is there a CURE OR WHAT? Then you have the cures that "they"want to sell you on the internet (treelac) is it a scam? If 80% of the population suffors from candida, it would be good business, wouldn't it? So I am repeating IS THERE A CURE? I feel like I will have to have crandberry juice and grapeseed oil for breakfast, flax oil and oregano oil on greens with almonds and millet, for the rest of my life? That is depressing as much as having CANDIDA!

Believe me! I hear you! It's difficult finding a cure for this problem especially when you have to do it on your own. Doctors will treat your symptoms, not your actual problem and I'm willing to bet most people here are self-diagnosed. Before attempting to solve your candida issues, you first have to understand why you have them and what will solve them. I have found a very good webpage which explains candida infection and has a very easy diet to follow. http://www.drlockie.com/article_disease_view.fcm?articleid=13359&subsite=3
For me, change in diet has really helped out the most so far, but I know it will take a long time for my body to get balanced again. I am far off from that point. This is what I understand from the research I've done. Candida overgrowth is due to decreased levels of good bacteria in the body. I am focusing on increasing the level of good bacteria in my body while simultaneously decreasing the levels of fungus in the body. This means I don't want ANYTHING anti-bacterial. Yes, ACV will kill fungus but it will also kill bacteria. So to me, ACV is a BIG no. You would think yogurt would be off-limits because it is a dairy product, but since it contains good bacteria that should help boost the levels of good bacteria in the body, the good outweighs the bad and yogurt is a big YES. Anti-fungals are good. This includes oregano oil, oregano juice, garlic (raw AND capsule form), calendula tea, among many many others. I have also read chamomile has anti-fungal properties. Probiotics are definitely a yes. Make sure to buy the best kind, most likely found at the health food store. You keep them in the fridge to make sure the bacteria is still alive. Probiotics with dead bacteria are no good. Fruit juices are a no, because usually they contain a ton of sugar. In fact, most fruits are a no because of the sugar they contain naturally. I know this is a frustrating problem as I am having to deal with it myself due to overuse of antibiotics. I had been so sick for several months and the fog is just starting to lift. I just try to remind myself that my body is basically an ecosystem and ecosystems take much time to rebuild after devastation of one of it's inhabitants (bacteria). If anyone would like to contact me to discuss candida issues and exchange theories and possible remedies, please do email me! Remember two heads are often better than one! :)
I would imagine that the reason hydrogen peroxide works so much better than other antifungals such as oregano, grapefruit seed extract and colloidal silver is because its oxidizing action also destroys the Candida biofilms?
So the silver and other antifungals can kill the Candida that is "free", but all of it within biofilms is effectively within an "impenetrable fortress" that only oxidizers and a few other things (like maybe specific enzymes) can get into?
Hi, great website of candida information. I too have had great challenges with this candida syndrome. However, my major changes happened when I incorporated really two things in my life. I use live sauerkraut and a fabulous probiotic drink which are so very high in lactibacilus bacteria, enzymes, minerals, vitamins and amino acids!! Greatest thing that I ever did do for it. Also to detox mercury from the body, I used a brown algae originally from Russia. This product is so beneficial for nutrients and also for removing the heavy metals that you will be totally amazed, no kidding.
When I say live sauerkraut I mean that it must be raw to be effective. All of the old countries did use fermented LIVE, not cooked fermented foods for health. Believe me when I say I knew of everything that you listed on your website because I too have been there. These two items do tremendous jobs at eliminating the problem and making your life much more enjoyable. I have one more thing that I am experiencing with to help the body with the breakdown of this infestation. Remember, candida is really not the true enemy, our immune system in our body is very weak. What creates disease is a LACK of nutrients and this in turn creates a situation of the body not being able to detoxify. There are many nutrients involved but one of the key ones associated with fungus is Silica!! Believe me I have talked with people all over the world, and have researched this immensely. This is what I do for a living. Thank You.
You are so right about eating live, unfermented, raw fermented foods like sauerkraut (and Kimchi! ) to help fight yeast! I found kimchi works best for a sinus infection. Sauerkraut & Kimchi also both clear up acne in days (my whole life I had cystic acne so bad I was on rounds of the very dangerous drug Accutane! ) I am convinced that yeast is a causative factor in acne. Please try these remedies!

Go to your local heath food store to find a great brand of Kimche or Sauerkraut. Remember, look for brands that are live and unheated and unpasturized. A farmer's market or farm near you may have in and advertise on the internet. Don't buy commercially available brands found at supermarkerts. They're heated and they have lost their nutrients.
