Hello Tom - This is to let you know how much I appreciate your post about Yamoa Powder below. When I read about it ,I right away went to the web site and read the testimonials and bought myself a bottle as a last resort.

I'm happy to say I'm at least 70% better now after less than 4 weeks! At the time I read your post I was considering admitting myself to some kind of care facility. I felt so bad, taking baby steps to reach my inhaler and using furniture to support myself. It's such a good feelinig to be able to take a good breath now and move around freely. I'm glad you took the time to let us know about this wonderful supplement, it's so important to share information where we can all benefit. Thank you so much from the bottom of my heart.

Coconut Oil

Re: Coconut oil for asthma

Almost certainly, the key reason it works is the lung surfactant secreted by the epithelial cells is almost solely palmitic acid, which by weight in coconut oil is 9%:

http://www.scientificpsychic.com/fitness/fattyacids1.html

Here is the reference for this:
http://www.lewrockwell.com/miller/miller33.1.html

Saturated fats play many important biologic roles. They are an integral component of cell membranes, which are 50 percent saturated fat. Lung surfactant is composed entirely, when available, of one particular saturated fat, 16-carbon palmitic acid. Properly made with this fat, it prevents asthma and other breathing disorders. For nourishment, heart muscle cells prefer saturated long-chain palmitic and 18-carbon stearic acid over carbohydrates. Saturated fats are required for bone to assimilate calcium effectively. They help the liver clear out fat and provide protection from the adverse effects of alcohol and medications like acetaminophen. Medium-chain saturated fats in butter and coconut oil, 12-carbon lauric acid and 14-carbon myristic acid, play an important role in the immune system.

Yamoa Powder For Asthma

I notice this remedy is not anywhere on this site, and certainly not under Asthma or Hay Fever/allergies.

It was introduced into Britain in the mid-1990's by a Ghanaian immigrant, a Mr. Yamoa, and supposedly is used there quite widely. Britain, likely due to its huge congestion (61 million in a tiny island) has a large percentage of people with asthma or allergies/respiratory ailments. The actual plant extract powder comes from the bark of a species of tree in Ghana. It is sold in capsule form in health stores. Also, there is no need to take it for life prophylacticly. It balances the immune system so that the asthma attacks stop (or the allergies/hay fevers). One will know within the first 2 months of taking the therapeutic dosage if it has worked. There's retail sellers on the Internet, but I can't vouch for any. Just use a search engine.

Fish Oil

I suffered for years with asthma, made worse by cold wet weather. It was one of the reasons I moved to a warmer climate. Inhalers and other medications did not really work. It felt like a giant hand would just squeeze the air out of my lungs. Once I was at a lecture with a friend and he said people thought I was making fun of the speaker, when actually it was my wheezing! Both of my parents smoked, and I think I was dealing with COPD from the time I was five or six. I can remember hiding in closets as a small child so people wouldn't hear me wheeze and clear my lungs. I don't smoke, never have.

I researched for natural cures and found fish oil. I started taking it and the wheezing went away. My lungs feel pliant and able to open up. Wet and cold weather do not affect me anymore. I can breathe! When I don't take the fish oil, the wheezing comes back, so I'm convinced that what is what works for me.

The recommended amount I read is one teaspoon for every 50 lbs. of weight. That's what I take. I usually will take a liquid form, but sometimes pills, so I will take about three or so of those. My body lets me know how much works. I take the fish oil in the morning. I also take flax oil at night, one or two tablespoons. But when I only take flax oil, the wheezing comes back. It has to be fish oil (sorry vegetarians, I don't know any other answers for you).

In the winter I take cod liver oil, in the summer just regular fish oil. Both work as well, but the cod liver oil has vitamin D, which I feel I get enough of in the summer.

So I believe for me, the answer is that I need the omega 3 fatty acids for normal lung function.

The taste can be unpleasant, but there are flavored forms and then of course the pills, though they tend to be rather large.

Another bonus is that I notice my vision is much clearer when I faithfully take fish oil, particularly the cod liver oil. The owner of one of the vitamin stores I go to says that the elderly customers who have taken cod liver oil their entire lives often have 20/20 vision. I believe it.

I hope this can help someone and I'm really glad I found this site. I'm trying a few of the suggestions here and will post in a while when I see (or don't see) results.

MSM

MSM cured my Asthma. I have been using ACV for quite some time now without any measurable improvement in my Asthma, but I will continue to use it for all its other health benefits. I wanted desperately to find something to help my Asthma. I have had Asthma since I was 6 (I'm now 35) and it became much worse 11 years ago when I was pregnant with my daughter. I have been using Advair and Ventolin for years, but I don't want to be dependent on them. I ran out of my Advair about a week and a half ago and my Asthma became out of control. I was waking up a couple of times a night needing my rescue inhaler and I struggled throughout the day. I took 2 1,000 mg capsules of MSM yesterday (I broke the powder into applesauce) and I was able to sleep through the night and wake up without ANY issues! I took a second dose this morning and again just now. I haven't had so much as a wheeze all day! I feel like a new woman! I will let you know how I feel after continued use. I LOVE this site!

Supplements

Supplements for asthma:

1.) Inhaled glutathione 2X a day (ask your holistic doctor to prescribe this to you!) No prescriptions necessary for any of the other supplements below.

2.) N Acetylcysteine

3.) MSM

4.) Germanium (only on the form of Ge-132)

Please research these supplements and ask your HOLISTIC doctor any questions (most conventional pulmonologists would laugh at the idea of you being able to be medication free and controlling your asthma with supplements that are actually good for you!)

BETTER BUT WITH SIDE EFFECTS

I have had a good experience with h202. I inhale it when I feel tightness in my chest and instantly feel improvement. However, the first symptom I experience is feeling fog headed. I difficulty finding words in conversation. This bothers me more than anything is this a symptom of asthma. I don't have attacks, I have wheezing and congestion at times.

Please try this remedy if you have asthma or other breathing difficulties. It is such relief from nature!!

Dietary Changes

My last experience with asthma was after I ate a bowl of ice cream, I hadn't had an attack in years and ended up watching the sun come up because of it, I found that dairy was a huge offender for me when it comes to allergies, I cannot consume it. I also found that when I cut all dairy out of my diet any allery symptoms I may have been experiencing was lessened considerably. I also found that corn and any corn products did the same thing.

Environmental Triggers
Posted by Martha (El Centro, California) on 11/04/2009

WINDS, HUMIDITY AND EXTREME COLD

Absolutely, environmental triggers are an important aspect. Windy days can bring on attaches and the sediment that is lifted can take days to come down from the atmosphere to bother us many days after the winds die down.

Being from the desert, I am aware of the dryness of our winters. Any time it gets lower than 30% humidity, I say watch out! Cuz it triggers the itching in the throat, coughing, etc. So I hang a wet towel in my room for some humidity. It helps me breathe. Also, if the weather gets too cold, I have trouble. I set the thermostat at 69 degrees just enough to cut the cold because if it gets below that, I have trouble breathing!

Find the Triggers

My son has asthma set off by allergies and we manage it using a lot of tools, many of them I found at EC. The most important thing is to find out what things set you off (food and/or environmental) and then avoid them! For my son, the big ones are woodsmoke (we live in Costa Rica and everyone burns their trash), cigarette smoke, moldy buildings (inside of a carpeted theatre) - those are the biggies. Foods are not so bad for him, but a few give him the dry cough and itchy throat: dairy, white flour, sugar of course - those are common. Corn products, bananas, a few other things. But his worst attacks have been environmental.

When he feels a sinus infection coming on (which is rare these days), he does the Neti pot (1 C warm water, 1/2 t. real salt, 1-2 drops GSE, 1/4 t. baking soda) and gargles. We take a boat load of vitamins (including 500mg magnesium and 2.5g Vit C in a powder).

For colds, 150mg zinc, then again 4 hours later, then again 4 hours later - I find this odd but a friend recommended it and it works.

Garlic is great for lungs: swallow a raw crushed clove (I cut it in pieces).

Drink hot ACV with honey and a tap of cayenne at night - yum! Everything clears up.

That's all I can think of at this moment. Thanks so much for this website. I just wanted to give something back. Pura vida!

Buteyko Breathing Method

Aloha to the folks here. My naturopath let me know about a treatment for asthma called Buteyko Breathing Method over 6 years ago. I learned it and have been asthma symptom free since. I just started to teach a workshop on Buteyko. It is so amazing to see people get so much relief from it. Clinical studies show that in 2 to 6 weeks people reduce albuterol / short acting med's by 90% and long term acting meds by 50% with 90% reduction in symptoms. If you are in Hawaii I could teach it to you and if not there are teachers in the U.S.

Good luck and aloha.

After suffering from asthmatic symptoms for over twenty years from various seasonal pollens, mildew and mold, I have found a natural treatment for immediate relief! An ER nurse told me of this remedy after being treated for an extreme asthma attack.

Using 8-10 drops of Lobelia tincture, found in health food stores, mixed into a small glass of filtered water and taken when any tightness or wheezing begins will stop symptoms immediately. Follow the manufacture's directions. I use 5 drops in water every morning as a precaution when the pollen count is high. I don't need inhalation therapy anymore! I have used this remedy for about a year, so I've been through each season. It's been a relief not to use streoids!
FYI I still carry my rescue inhaler in my purse as a backup just in case and haven't needed it!

Removing dairy products will help to reduce mucous, also helping asthma symptoms. ACV will balance the body PH which is beneficial to the entire body. The problems most asthmatics have when breathing is not usung the full lung capacity. Depressed lung capacity will create an acidic environment.

Aloe Vera

I apologize in advance for how lengthy this is. I am writing to let everyone know about the incredible benefits we have experienced with Aloe. About one and a half years ago our whole family came down with whooping cough. I decided to try Aloe, as a friend I had known had had great success with it for treating a serious prolonged cough and my mother also told me that in Colombia SA they would use a beaten concoction of Aloe and egg whites to treat whooping cough when she was a little girl. I reaearched Aloe on the internet, and though I didn't find the egg white recipe, I found many things Aloe is good for. It did work very well for whooping cough, especially helping to calm the nightime attacks, and a friend tried it for her daughter's whooping cough and had the same results. When I looked Aloe up on the internet, the treatment for the ailment that interested me the most was asthma. My son had been struggling with it for several years- not severe, but mostly sports induced and it greatly hindered his ability to play sports. I have tried most home remedies for asthama and have had so-so results. He began drinking it every day and by the end of the second month his attacks were completely gone. As long as he continues to drink it daily, he has no attacks. If he stops it entirely he begins having attacks again after a couple of months.

I found that one of the reasons that Aloe works for asthama (and other conditions like arthritis and lupus) is because it is anti-inflammatory. So, it keeps the airwarys from getting inflamed. Another reason it works is because it is also excellent for treating allergies which many times are a trigger for asthama. One of the reasons it works for allergies is because of the collagen it causes your body to produce which thickens the the mucus linings of your repiratory system and intestinal tract (heals leaky gut) which in turn helps you not to be so sensitive to allergens. Another reason is that it treats systemic candida which is usually the root of asthma and allergies.

The funny thing I noticed, which is not mentioned in any literature I have researched about Aloe, is that it has also helped with his stunted growth. My son is really short for his age and in the two years before taking Aloe, he only grew six inches total. Once he began taking Aloe for his asthma he grew almost six inches in one year. The growth spurt coincided exactly with time he first began the Aloe. I've tried my own "experiments" to see if his growth is related to the Aloe or if it is just his time to start growing, and I've found that if he has a period of a couple of months where he doesn't take his Aloe at all or only takes it once a week or so, he only grows about a quarter of an inch per month or less. When he takes it every single day, he grows about a half inch per month.

My father has been really inspired about my son's story and began taking it himself about four months ago for his prostate. He has been on prostate medication for the past ten years and still gets up to urinate about four times per night. He has tried different prostate medicines as well as his own share of home remedies, and nothing has worked. Well, after drinking Aloe daily for a couple of months, he was able to get off of his prostate medicine completly. Now he only gets up once or twice per night and he's not on any prostate medecine.

I've heard some people make some type of Aloe tea infusion, but the way we take Aloe is this: We buy a fresh Aloe stalk from the produce section of the grocery store. It has to be at least fourteen inches long, or I've read it's not as beneficial. The Aloe has to be nice and firm. Don't use it if it is soft and squishy as it is too old and may actually agravate some candida problems. We slice off a three inch section from the base and peel off the thick green skin with a paring knife and discard it. We then take the gel (from the three inch section) and gently blend it with a drink mixer with some orange juice for palatability. The less you blend, the better as you don't want to destroy the beneficial properties.

You can buy bottled Aloe, but I DON'T RECOMMEND IT! While there may be some good Aloe products out there, I've read that sometimes the bottle can say 100% Aloe and it is actually 95% water, but for some reason the FDA allows them to say 100% Aloe even if it isn't. The other reason is that bottled Aloe is usually pastuerized which kills many of the beneficial enzymes that make Aloe so effective. Fresher is always better with Aloe.

I like to know if i should use lobelia drops in water or under the tongue?

EC: You might throw up if you try taking lobelia under the tongue -- it's very strong! People typically take it as directed on the bottle (water or juice).

Multiple Remedies

Ron, sorry to hear about your troubles..especially the ER visits!! I have had asthma since 27 and am now almost 50. As much as we like to rant against the drug companies (somewhat deserving) nothing has worked better then albuterol for an attack. It has saved my life. However, I have found lifestyle changes and a combination of various natural remedies to help. Of the greatest benefit for me was avoiding the triggers. A clean household, NO rugs or heavy fabrics, avoid forced air heating, good air circulation at night. I had a cat for twenty years and when she passed, I went from about 3 or 4 inhalers a year to just one.. A simple anti-inflammatory diet, high in vegetables, nuts, olive oil, minimal animal protein, can help. Of the herbs?
Turmeric, Ginger, Freeze Dried Stinging Nettle for the allergy season. Distilled omega oils have helped...I have exercise induced and yours may be different. I also do yoga which doesn't trigger an attack like running would. Like you, I have yet to find a "cure" but it is out there..so don't give up.

I have read the postings on asthma, I have some bad asthma and it has seemed to got worse with age I have had it since I was like 7 and now im 33! I have been trying these natural remedies but so far I don't think any of them have really worked. I took the apple cider and it didn't work, I have been taking vitamin b-12(methyl) but I don't know if its working yet. I tried eualyptus oil but it worked just briefly. I stopped taking my allergie shots because I didn't feel they were working. On average every 2 months I go to the ER. Question: Should I be drinking the ACV when I am feeling good? I also heard about Boswellia Extract, I heard that is good, but I know it is good for your joints also, should I take this? I have also tried a hot shower, eating fruits, any suggestions would be helpful, thank you.

H2O2 Inhalation Therapy

My 10yr old son who wheezes with breathing in cold air had an attack and seemed to worsen as the day progressed. Labored breathing with wheezing sounds, scary. I already had a nebulizer machine in the house from years past using albuterol mixtures. I placed about 1/3 cup of water in a separate container and one drop of 35% food grade H202. Stirred it and then filled to capacity the nebulizer holding cup. After about 20 minutes he seemed to breath alot easier but not 100% to normal. He slept for an hour then was able to get up and guess what? No heavy breathing! A little wheezing but not as much as before. I was hesitant to try the H2O2 as so many precautions and warnings. I'm glad I only put one drop into a separate container with more water. One drop in the nebulizer cup (about 2 tablespoons capacity) would have been way too much.
