Toothache, Tooth Infection, Tooth Abscess Remedies
"A tooth abscess or root abscess is pus enclosed in the tissues of the jaw bone at the tip of an infected tooth. Usually the abscess originates from a bacterial infection that has accumulated in the soft pulp of the tooth. This is usually, but not always, associated with a dull, throbbing, excruciating ache.
A tooth abscess typically originates from dead pulp tissue, usually caused by untreated tooth decay, cracked teeth or extensive periodontal disease. A failed root canal treatment may also create a similar abscess.
There are two types of dental abscess. A periapical abscess starts in the dental pulp. A periodontal abscess begins in the supporting bone and tissue structures of the teeth." (Wikipedia)

TED'S REMEDIES
06/13/2007: Ted from Bangkok, Thailand: "Traditionally people use clove oil (2-4 drops) to do the mouthwash in 1/4 glass of water will work better as clove has a numbing effect and kill the bacteria also. Dentists also use the clove oil applied directly using appropriate devices, to the area of cavities. Often 1% hydrogen peroxide with baking soda, for me works the best in preventing cavities from getting any larger. However, if the mouth has high number of bacterium, using them a couple of times is helpful. I do it say 2-3 times. The cavities tooth pain goes away quite quickly. The key is to make sure there is no food residue after eating, which means a peroxide mouthwash is to be done after eating of every meal.
The use of either black tea bag, or a green tea (no sugar, no fructose, no milk) is a broad spectrum antibiotics.
Sometimes, if my budget is limited, I mixed a 1/8 teaspoon of tannic acid in 1/2 glass of water to do the mouthwash, with frequent swishing of course! They work too, of course, whenever I don't have green tea or 1% hydrogen peroxide at my home.
In the long run, the key is to make sure the saliva pH exceeds 7 or at least 7. Cavities don't form if the saliva are at this level. It seems drinking green tea occasionally caused the saliva gland to worked better and raising the pH can be done with baking soda 1/4 teaspoon taken twice a day helps a lot in prevention. It must be noted that peroxide reduce the bacteria, but baking soda prevents the bacteria in the mouth from growing (that and no food particles and sugary food).
In other times I can do 2-4 drops of iodine in 1/2 glass of water as a good mouthwash also. It prevents iodine deficiency when this is done occasionally, such as once a week, for example."

04/22/2006: Ted from Bangkok, Thailand writes: "The best cure I can think of for a tooth abscess that helped me is when I mixed a 1/4 teaspoon of potassium carbonate into 1/2 glass of water and use this as a mouthwash. Do it three for four times should reduce the pain in a couple of hours. Basically a relatively strong alkaline solution will usually destroy the bacteria. At least it really helped with my cavities pains.
Also I sometimes mixed sodium perborate also (after dissolving it which takes an hour in water!) keeps my teeth free from the abscess also. If you can't find potassium carbonate, a good alternative might be sodium carbonate, however, I think you might need a little less. Ideally a sodium perborate and potassium carbonate should do the trick. I have also resorted to using H2O2 1.5% as a mouthwash now and then just to be sure also.
However, a longer term solution of taking some vitamin B3 in particular plus a B complex vitamins will help reduce it too. If everything works out as expected, some improvement should be noticed within the next day. The theory is basically simple, the bacteria in your mouth has a weakness against alkaline, for the very same reason why they cause cavities by creating acid to dissolve your tooth enamel which causes tooth abscesses whenever they too get into your gums. Flossing also helps in later stages also. However, if the condition still persist it is best to see your dentist. Oh yes, by the way, take a fairly large daily dose of vitamin C also as it is also helps with tooth abscess, such as 1-2 grams (1000-2000 mg) per day. This will also really help relieve the conditions of fibromyalgia if taken together with magnesium and malic acid (apple cider vinegar is high on malic acid)."
Replies10/31/2010: Josh K from Amboy, Il USA replies: "No one can praise the power of good old warm salt water... It helps my toothaches almost instantly and was recommended to me by a respected Dentist. Worked for me again this morning :)"
11/06/2010: Brian H from Vancouver, British Columbia, Can. replies: "Here's a suggestion re toothache: buy a bottle of Glycerin. Either the '100% pure Vegetable Source' from a health supplement store, or a drugstore's 'USP' grade is fine. Brush your teeth with it, pure. It is a moderately sweet, intensely hygroscopic 3-carbon alcohol, somewhat syrupy in texture. You can swallow it, if you wish. In fact, a swish on the back of the tongue and swallow kills the sulfur-loving bacteria back there and instantly ends 'death breath'. The G. will kill all bacteria in your mouth, and penetrate cavities, and filter down under the gumline and clean out periodontal disease bacteria, as well. When I figgered this out, years ago, I had only a few, loose teeth left. They immediately firmed up and I've had no problems since.
It has a myriad other uses; any skin condition responds rapidly, from sunburn to bites to psoriasis. Reorders and rebuilds the skin layers from the bottom up. Subdues inflammation, and turns off "alarm chemicals" causing pain; it is often prescribed for arthritis sufferers for that and other reasons. It naturally penetrates the skin without rubbing. Marvelous stuff. Dirt cheap; expect to pay $1/oz for it, and it goes a long way. BTW, it's the most widely used chemical in existence, partly because it is 'GRAS*' as a food additive, virtually the highest rating. Raisins soaked in it stay soft, e.g. used as a lubricant instead of oil in food processing equipment where contamination might be an issue. Currently, a glut on the world market as it is a high-volume byproduct of biofuels. *FDA-rating "Generally Regarded as Safe""

[YEA] 08/18/2009: William from Akron, Ohio: "Acmella oleracea, also known as Spilanthes acmella or toothache plant, is a natural analgesic which numbs the tongue and gums. Chewing a young bud results in extremely strong tingling and numbing effect. You can also make a tincture using 1 part herb (buds, flowers, leaves)1 part water, and 5 parts ethanol. Let stand for 2 to 3 weeks shaken occasionally. Apply to affected area with cotton wool."
Replies02/05/2012: Susan from Brookline, Ma replies: "Hi, I had a tooth-gum infection once -pretty sure it came form too much novacaine-as I asked for alot of it and tooth became infected right after this.Brushing the area with toothe paste and gargling salt water and putting salt on the area - helped a bit, but what worked best was putting goldenseal- break up the capsule- and put it right on the area and brush it gently, and gargle it and also put some in an empty tea bag, wet it with your saliva, and then hold it there for several minutes a number of times per day.
The infection went away quickly after I used the goldenseal."

ACTIVATED CHARCOAL

[NAY] 08/02/2011: Arizona_sunsets from Casa Grande, Arizona, U.s.a.: "I have had a very bad abscessed tooth, so I have been trying all kinds of things on here because I cannot afford a dentist.
I took coffe filters, cut them up into small pieces, filled them with charcoal from charcoal pills, wetted them lightly, then pressed them around my problem areas, they did great for maybe 15 mins. , tried this twice with the same results. Also, my pain was extreme after they stopped working."
Replies08/02/2011: Mmsg from Somewhere, Europe replies: "You can try to do the same but with ground cloves."
[YEA] 02/25/2012: Sharon from Wesley Chapel, Florida replies: "Hooray for charcoal! I had a very bad toothache and it was late at night. I used the charcoal mixed with clove oil and in 30 min the pain was reduced by half. By the end of the hour, it was down to nothing. I left it on overnight, and the relief was amazing. When I got to the dentist office, they smiled and said they knew about it, and it was not well-known. l used some activated charcoal l had at the house for stomach issues."

[YEA] 01/25/2009: Tamara from Upland, CA: "I had an infection in my gums and it caused extreme pain and i couldn't sleep. I made a paste of sesame oil, clove oil, and activated charcoal. I placed the paste in a small piece of cheesecloth and placed it in my mouth next to the infected gum. I slept with it overnight. The next morning, the infection was gone!!! So Amazing. No more waiting to get into the dentist for an appointment or prescription meds. Activated Charcoal also works great if you are planning on drinking alcohol. I take one capsule for every drink consumed and have no hangover in the morning. Amazing stuff!!"

[YEA] 10/05/2006: Keith from Orlando, FL: "Was reading the remedies and just wanted to add the following: I am a medical missionary that uses natural methods of healing. I encounter several different diseases and sickness in my line of work.
One remedy that I have never seen fail for toothache pain, is charcoal. It will stop severe toothache pain in about 20-45 minutes in most cases! I will give you an example with my wife. She begin to have toothache pain last year(2005) around the time of thanksgiving. She begin to call dentists for an appointment; however, the soonest that she could get an appointment was 2 weeks! To make a long story short the pain became unbearable. It radiated all the way to her temple on the side of the bad tooth.
So I took activated charcoal, added a little water, stirred to a paste consistency, placed it on a gauze(a piece of cotton t-shirt could also be used) and placed it directly over the tooth. I had her press down very gently. I then offered a prayer.
In about 12-15 minutes the pain that was radiating up to her temple begin to subside. In about 20-30 minutes my wife, who had been in such great pain, that she was in tears, and was unable to even sleep, dropped off to sleep.
The next day we also started her on a program of drinking 2-3 glasses per day of a table spoon of the charcoal mixed with a glass of water. She did eventually go to the dentist only to find that a small cavity had exposed a nerve, and infection had set in.
The charcoal worked on the infection because it is the inflammation that causes the pain. So by pulling or drawing the poisons from the infection(the underlying cause) the inflammation is addressed.
A friend of mine, who is also a very experienced medical missionary, with more than 30 years of hands on experience, even running a natural clinic in Tennessee for a long time, and having a 45-50% success rate with 4 stage cancer, (conventional success rate with 4th stage cancer is about 5%" gives the following alternative for toothache pain and abscess
These are direct quotes: "Mix 3 tablespoons charcoal,1/2 teaspoon clove oil, 1/3 teaspoon cayenne pepper, ½ teaspoon olive oil (enough to make a paste), and 1 teaspoon of golden seal. He states: " This remedy is strictly for pain in the jaw or tooth pain. Pack this around the tooth that is giving you problems. If you can cover the tooth up it will generate heat. That will remove the pain faster than any toothache remedy. Try it. You will feel the heat and you can go wash your mouth out. If you are in a lot of pain the heat is comforting. The pain of the poultice drawing is less than the throbbing of the toothache.[The mixture] should be quite thick, about the consistency of natural peanut butter. You want to be able to mould it around the tooth, so that it will stick."
The next is for an abscess specifically.
His words: "If you have an abscess with a lot of swelling, you cannot get that tooth pulled until you get the abscess under control. This recipe is famous for getting that abscess down 3 parts Slippery Elm, 2 parts baking yeast, 4 drops cloves, 1/3 teaspoon cayenne pepper. Add a little water, enough to make a paste. It will be gummy due to the slippery elm. Then pack this mixture around the gum. The slippery elm, like charcoal, draws the inflammation, the cayenne stimulates the cells around the tooth to release toxins and the cloves are added for the reputation as a pain remedy, especially in toothache."
Replies[YEA] 07/22/2009: Teresa from Spanaway, Washington replies: "Yes! The activated charcoal STOPPED my TOOTH ACHE within minutes. I opened 1 activated charcoal capsule, poured on saucer, added drops of water, which a made runny paste, put it on my finger and then rub it on the gum above my aching tooth. When the tooth would start to feel like it was beginning to ache again, I added this charcoal mixture, and it stopped the pain."
12/27/2010: Ethersteve from Lexington, Kentucky replies: "I'm so glad I read your comments about your experience as a medical missionary and what you've mentioned about your friend's experience as well. I'm likely to go ahead and try the remedy myself. I'm looking for a natural alternative to antibiotics to remedy an abcessed tooth and it seems that charcoal is the answer. I'm sure you already know that technology is well behind mother nature in curing the uncureable such as cancer.I'm one of the lucky few who decided to go with instinct rather than my doctor's advice when approaching treatment for my own stage 5 (yes - stage 5) squeamous cell carcinoma. Instead of becoming a lab animal for experimentation, I put my faith in God and mother nature to take care of me come hell or high water and guess what? Through a regimen of supplements, nutrition, and positive vibes with friends and family in life I pulled through. Surely would have died within the year if I had followed my doctor's advice. That was 8 years ago and no signs of relapse. It's refreshing to hear that others are enjoying the same type of success - 40-50% huh?
Anyways, thanks for the confirmation of my lifestyle and advice for my abcess! I had an abcess in the same spot 5 months ago that doc's and dentist told me would need removal of the tooth immediately but I wanted to keep my tooth and never had it pulled when the abcess went away with penicillin. I'm gonna try something natural this time. So glad I came to this site and read yours and others posts! Thanks,
Ethersteve"
07/02/2011: Issie from Jax, Fl replies: "wow I now know the meaning of trying anything to make the pain stop. my tooth has been hurting on and off for a couple of days now. but I was using over the counter meds til I could get in to dentist last night it became unbareable. I was in sooo much pain. I almost got the tool box out and pulled my own tooth.Instead I hopped on internet and found this thread. I used what I had in closet to get me through night. (honey, cinnamon, tea, garlic and I threw in oats too. This helped to draw some of the infection out. Cause around 4am I was spitting it blood that had a yellow color to it) around 9am I went to health foods store and got the charcoal and slippery elm clove oil and pick up some cayanne pepper at grocey store. Came home made a paste out of all of it and put it in my gum and tooth and pain free wooohooo. so I am hoping this will draw infection out and that I can go to denist with it under control instead of having to pay for two appts but who ever started all of this thank you cause I am going to make it through holiday weekend now."
[BETTER BUT NOT CURED] 07/25/2011: Julie from Lake Oswego, Or replies: "YES!!! I can attest to the charcoal for tooth pain, too! Had a scale 9 pain one night before I could get to a dentist. Excruiciating. Saw this method and happened to have one cap - making a paste - the swelling in my gums subsided after about an hour, pain to tolerable 5. It really pulls the toxins out! SOOOOO gratefull to have found this for my lost filling and exposed nerve! Before taking it, was on my way to extraordinary gum swelling and awful pain. It is my hero!"
07/30/2011: Maria from Kankakee, Il replies: "i dont know what to do anymore I have a terrible tooth infection and its hurting to the extreme since is one tooth in the back infected my whole right side of teeth also hurt including my right eye headache on the right side and right side head hurts the worst went to the dentist and gave me infection pills been taking it but dont work at all decided to get it pulled but have an app. until next month! I dont know what to do please give me an advice and help me out thank you so much whoever does."
07/30/2011: Courtney from Granite Bay, California replies: "Garlic-garlic-garlic! I cannot say enough about the healing properties of garlic when it comes to dental infections.I promise you that if you do this, you will be astounded at how well it works.
Take a good sized clove of peeled garlic (the bigger, the better), slice it fairly thin, then chop it into tiny pieces. Let the chopped pieces sit for about 5 minutes, then put all of the pieces onto a spoon and gulp it down, almost as you would a pill, with water.
Do this 3x a day and you will be amazed! Good luck. Tooth pain is no fun. I feel for you."
01/19/2012: Angie from Somewhere, Al/ Usa replies: "For toothache pain I placed a clove of garlic on the tooth and bit down and chewed the clove up with the bad tooth then swallowed. Instant relief!! While chewing the garlic it becomes hot and all I could think was that as soon as I swallow this I am going to drink lots of water but as soon as I swallowed all the heat was gone... Along with the toothache!!!!! Easiest thing I ever tried."

ALPHA LIPOIC ACID
06/13/2009: Annette from Cuy Falls, Ohio: "Several years ago, my husband had an abcessed tooth. A filling had been broken out for some time and we did not have dental insurance. He went to a health food store and asked about a remedy for pain relief. The propietor highly recommended Alpha Lipoic Acid. My husband bought the 50mg caps, which were the least expensive. Back then, he weighed 230 pounds (6' tall). He took 2-50mg caps of Alpha Lipoic Acid every 4 hrs, 4 times daily, for 7 to 10 days, decreasing the dose after the pain was gone.
I can attest to this remedy also, because some time later, I had a toothache that would not quit. I treated myself with Alpha Lipoic Acid. It was kind of like a do-it-yourself root canal. My pain subsided each day and was totally gone within 3 days. I continued to take it a few more days. My tooth is still A-OK 10 years later. Did not require any dental work, even though I've been in for cleaning and x-rays several times since.
On a polar opposite note, I have been reading about Urotherapy - a little known frontier with claims of curing numerous aliments, including various cancers. Each of us have this readily available, tailor-made, built-in health dispenser at no cost. Research online, as it's limited experimental findings are under wraps among med books (has been for years). I did try it myself for a lower abdominal ache, after other natural remedies did not work over a 2 month period. I searched for a cure and found it. After 2 weeks of drinking a few ounces of 'mid stream in the morning', all pain was gone. Never had another symptom of who knows what. No, it doesn't taste bad. Think of it as intended - it's personalized medicine that won't harm you, but most likely will cure you. Do the research. I've found it tried, true and an essential entry in my emergency home care journal."

ANTIBIOTICS

[YEA] 05/22/2007: kira from Guildford, United Kingdom: "For severe tooth pain such as in the case of an abscess, the only thing that has worked for me is 750mg daily Amoxicillin. I have tried clove oil which is extremely powerful but does not kill the pain even if you drink the stuff and can make the pain worse as an abscess is about pressure build up from toxins under the tooth and so needs to be burst in some way.
I rubbed my tooth-brush rigorously on the abscess itself which hurt a lot, but tons of puss and blood came out that needed to come out as it is poison and what causes the pain in the first place. The colour of the puss is like a dark yellow/orange and there is often a huge amount of it if the abscess is particularly large in size. I could not burst the abscess any other way and this is the only real way of doing it and without seriously hurting yourself or your gum.
For general tooth pain not caused by an abscess, the only thing that will stop pain, is medication unless the tooth pain is mild enough to bear it. Very few people can cope with pain and so the ones that can't, they need something that is going to work and that only comes in the form of pills - not garlic, cloves and things on here that are for more tougher folk with stronger pain threshold.
I cannot cope with tooth pain at all and often suffer from abscesses and I have tried everything out there and nothing works except only for strong antibiotics. A mild tooth ache is another thing and anything will work for that as long as it stings and draws out the source of pain such as warm salt water. Dental pain comes in many forms but the worst is by far toothache caused by an abscess and to which the only cure is relief gained by bursting as much of it as possible and with an object that isn't going to cause damage. The toothbrush is the best and only real sure way of bursting an abscess It takes some pounding on the gum with the bristles to break the top layer of the abscess skin, but once you have done it and the puss and blood come, you know then that you have begun to relieve yourself of the pain an abscess does provide.
I talk from experience and with common sense."
Replies03/09/2009: Edwin from Provo, UT replies: "I spent a weekend with a terrible abscess of a lower molar. My right cheek and jaw were swollen horribly. I tried many of the things on here such as cut/crushed garlic cloves on the abscess and tooth, teabag on the tooth/abscess, sea salt water rinse, hydrogen peroxide rinse. Unfortunately, none of them worked so I had to get to a dentist this morning. Luckily I found one with a $1 coupon for emergency exam, xray and consultation. He prescribed 500mg of amoxycillin 3 times a day. That's a pretty strong dosage. Then he went into his sales pitch and told me that for a mere $3,000 he could START to fix all my teeth. Dentists are hucksters and I have not met one who is trustworthy. Anyway, we'll see how the amoxycillin works.
I think I'll still have to lance it and drain it myself. I'll write back and let you know."
05/28/2009: Robert from Ormond Beach, FL replies: "I have had these same problems with unbearable pain and repeated visits to different dentists in hopes of finding one I could afford. Only Antibiotics and prescription pain med really worked, but I was able to hold off the pain for several months after taking antibiotics and then carrying my toothbrush everywhere and continuously brushing, also over the counter Anbesol gel really works for pain relief. I now have the pain returned and had not taken my pain meds prescribed knowing at some point the pain would return and is expensive but now am going to have to go back to the dentist an try again. I am hopefull a new dentist might have some compassion and work with me so I can pay over time, I paid off credit cards years ago and will not go into debt again as that would cause more pain in the long run. I am honest and just wish I could find a dentist that would accept partial payment and allow me to pay over time, so far they want me to fill out an application for a high interest rate medical credit card they have offered at the counter, it's like they are in with the crooked banks, but I am hopefull not all and I will find soon a good dentist with a heart.
meanwhile Anbesol is all I have and am going to try the black or green tea and clove oil mentioned above, it makes sense to change the PH levels and alkaline and I did manage for quite some time after getting infection to go away with antibiotics several months ago, the only thing that differs for me is heat, when I am in the sun it hurts my tooth, but cold water, fresh or seawater brings relief, so I am going to pass on the cayenne based on my own experience. many thanks to all posting on this thread, at least I have some ideas to try what might work.
Thank you"
05/28/2009: Kristi Amparan from Cleburne, TX replies: "To Robert of Ormond Beach FL Regarding Tooth Abcess:
My son has recently had to deal with tooth abcess and gum pain due to a mouth injury. He eventually had a root canal.
We tried many concoctions, but the only thing that gave him relief from the pain was to make a paste with a very small amount of water and activated charcoal (get this at a health food store or your pharmacist). We put the thin paste on a piece of paper towel and tucked it in between his gum and lip. He left this on for hours at a time. After a few times it helped the swelling, redness and pain. He did this until he could get an appointment for a root canal."
05/29/2009: Marla from KCity, U.S.A. replies: "Try Oil of Oregano (liquid). I had what I believed was an abcess a few years back. My gum was very soar and if my toothbrush even lightly touched that area it was verrry painful. At the time I didn't have dental insurance.
I simply put 3-4 drops of Oil of Oregano in about 1/4 cup of warm water and swished it around in my mouth; particularly on the side where the absess/soreness was. I did this several times a day. In a few days I was pain free. In between rinses I also used my finger to dab a bit on my gum, but it does burn some.
I recommended this remedy to other people and it worked for them too. Make sure the Oil of Oregano you purchase comes from the Mediterranean; the kind the cures isn't the same kind of oregano you buy for cooking."
05/30/2009: Veronica from London, UK replies: "Would you burst an abcess that looked like a bump - it's not draining!! I have two one under a Bridge - top left. big abcess - looks like a bump - now hurting....
the other one - has been draining for at least 2 years - no pain. When i burst it - it just comes back!!!! (dentist wants to take this out also).
Back to the fist tooth... tried garlic, goldemseal, teabag - bump still there..... unlike the other tooth - it is not draining....Was interested in what you said about pushing toothbrush on abcess until pus comes out - my question is would you do it on a 'bump type abcess?"
01/21/2010: Jh2010 from London, Ky replies: "where do you get activated charcoal? it would be greatly appreciated"
07/15/2010: Nickie from Ruislip, Middlesex, Uk replies: "To Kira and others suffering tooth abcesses I recommend Grapefruit Seed Extract. Put about ten drops in half glass of water, stir thoroughly and swish around the mouth before swallowing. Do this a couple of times before sleep and next morning - pain gone! This stuff is great as it works for sore throats, incipient colds, upset stomach and fungal infections. You can soak your athlete's feet in it, it's safe for children, takes care of diarrhea. You can dilute and use as a topical antiseptic for open wounds and I dab it neat on insect bites and a precautionary dose each morning will protect from the trots if you are vacationing somewhere the water is dubious. It is a natural anti-biotic and anti-viral and, unlike amoxycillin etc, will not kill off the friendly gut bacteria and expose you to fungal infections. In other words, it's really effective and won't hurt you and because it is good for so many things you shouldn't leave home without it. Tastes bitter of course but you can put in orange juice to mask the flavour if you are a cissie. I've used this for ten years, sung its praises to all and sundry who usually ignore me but the abcess sufferers to whom I have given some are now TRUE BELIEVERS. Nickie"
10/03/2010: Bells from Asheville, Nc replies: "Grapefruit seed extract is a natural antibiotic, so it is great for external and internal use for ANY KIND OF INFECTION. But just as with perscription antibiotics, it will kill all bacteria in a human, including the probiotics in your gut which help us all stay healthy. GSE is comparable to penicillin. So if any of you in suffering take this wonderful supplement, make sure to take high quality probiotics(perferaably enteric coated) for at least 2 months."
10/04/2010: Jules from Denver, Colorado replies: "About grapefruit seed extract, I will definitely agree that it's a potent natural anti biotic and have used it myself for various ailments. However, everything I've read points to the fact that it does no harm to the healthy flora found in our bodies. I do agree that a dose of probiotics is always good as well! :)"
[WARNING!] 05/24/2011: Nevadasmith from Smithfield Township, Pa replies: "Don't play around with abscessed teeth. Someone I know had an abscessed tooth and left it untreated, the infection spread and he died of a brain infection in his early 20s.Also, it is possible to eliminate an abscess to the point that he no longer is painful but then to have it flare up again later. Again it is best to eliminate the infection completely. Even a minor abscess at the end of a root can cause bone loss over time and you don't want that.
I am not discouraging the use of natural cures to fight the infection. I don't like taking antibiotics either but be sure that any cures you use are complete. It may be necessary to get a root canal in order to be sure. It may be best to see an endodontist."
06/10/2011: Wendy from Phila, Pa Usa replies: "Here I sit, unable to and not allowed to talk having spent a few hours in the dentist chair today.I had a "monster" (dentist's word for it) abscess in 2009. Top tooth next to the front tooth - encased in a fixed bridge that I obviously can't afford on SSDI to have replaced.
Root canal was done, antibiotics taken, both azythromycin and clindamycin along with routine checkups (I do have a discount dental plan, it helps some). Saw her a few months ago, needed to root planing and scaling. Xray taken of front tooth as a let's see what's up - and it was healing!
Fast forward to a week ago. Sitting here, went to scratch my nose and it hurt. Hmm? Then I noticed that it felt like something was "stuck" to the inside of my upper lip. Ran to the bathroom - HUGE abscess. Call dentist next day, she calls in antibiotics.
In the meantime I'm trying the teabag trick because it did help with the first abscess - no joy. I will not put peroxide in my mouth, that is a good way to end up with a yeast infection - in your mouth. Had no garlic. So waited, got antibiotic, saw dentist folllowing tuesday. Not only did the abscess come back but it was attacking the bone and root of the tooth next to it.
Yes, I had those "heads" - those are cysts of infection, not like the head on a pimple. If you have an abscess and you have a "head" come out of your mouth run to a dentist asap.
Today perio/endo person had to do surgery. Opened gum flap (from toothline up front and back of gum - the roof of your mouth does NOT like to messed with! ), removed the root of the offending tooth at the toothline, then ground the tooth inside the fixed bridge down and cleaned out all the small cysts of infection that were hiding even from the x-rays. I then had to have bone grafts due to the damage the returned infection caused in a short amount of time. I sit here right now in severe pain. I have stitches running along the gumline of 3 teeth. That's how much she had to open to get it all out.
I am not allowed to talk at all today. I cannot have any hot or warm food or anything hard or crunchy for at least a week. I am on another round of azithromycin. I will be puree'ing bananas, cantalope, berries into plain yogurt; have some Boost on hand along with unsweetened applesauce and yes, some babyfood veggies.
I am on SSDI, a fixed income. I could not really afford today's procedure (over $900)... to really fix everything would cost over $6, 000! On the other hand I couldn't afford to NOT get to the dentist and put the $900 on a credit card (since that amount is about my monthly check! ) because you do not mess around with infections - especially on your face or in your mouth.
I know it's hard, I know it hurts, believe me I know. The home/natural remedies might be a help (like the teabag was for me originally to help draw the ick out), but you must, must, must see a dentist. Your mouth, your other teeth, the bone supporting your mouth, your gums, your general health, your very life could depend on it. And I strongly DO believe in natural remedies whenever possible. But they're not going to get rid of a deep abscess, they may just put off the inevitable.
I watched my roommate's mom die of heart disease, she had years of dental problems - loose teeth from gum disease, recurrent abscesses that she would "pop" - which btw is not a good idea to do yourself - and the doctors do think that those years of dental problems and infections helped lead to the heart disease that took her from us."

[YEA] 02/09/2012: Lisa from Atlanta, Georgia: "I was having a horrible time with a cracked tooth, the pain was awful! IB Profin would only numb the pain for a short time. I tried peroxide, garlic and a few other things and nothing helped. Finally, I tried 2 tablespoons of ACV with the mother in a glass of warm water. Let me tell you, after the first two sips the pain started to go away! I'm on the second day of the vinegar and water 3 times a day and the pain is pretty much gone! I am amazed! I'm going to keep doing it but gradually reducing it until I get to 1 tablespoon in water 2 times a day."

[YEA] 01/18/2008: Vicky from Victoria, BC, Canada: "I had read about all of the ailments that could be treated by Apple Cider Vinegar and decided to try it for a bad case of Athlete's Foot. I used it for about 6 weeks and the problem cleared up completely. A couple of months later, I chipped a piece of a filling from my tooth. Within a couple of days, the tooth started to ache. I remembered how the Apple Cider Vinegar had killed the bacteria from my feet so I decided to start taking it internally to kill bacteria from the inside out. It immediately started to reduce the pain in my tooth. Within 3 weeks, my toothache was completed gone. I still haven't gone to a dentist to get it fixed. I just keep taking my ACV!"

[YEA] 07/16/2010: Diana from Bragg Creek, Ab Canada replies: "I have been taking ACV for other issues, and have had some pretty serious issues with an abscessed and cracked tooth I cannot afford to get fixed. They hurt and I was getting bumps in my gums from the infection. . . Then it stopped, but I had no idea of any connection. . . I ran out of ACV last week, and sure enough, I was having issues with my teeth again. I bought an organic brand ACV this morning drank 2 tbs in water, and had another dose this evening, the infection is almost gone again. I always take 2tbs of ACV in water in the morning and late afternoon for general good health reasons, but the tooth thing is a wonderful bonus. Who would have ever guessed."
[YEA] 05/12/2011: Jennifer from Sunrise, Fl replies: "Same results for me! I had a bad toothache in my decayed wisdom tooth, with a slightly swollen right cheek and a general feeling of fatigue and malaise. The symptoms lasted for almost 2 weeks and didn't get better. I went to my doctor to ask for some antibiotics and they turned me away, telling me I needed to see a dentist. I went to my dentist and they said they could pull the tooth at the end of the month. Desperate and in pain, I tried almost every remedy on this page - oil pulling, oil of oregano, coconut oil (internally and swishing), garlic (tried minced and fresh garlic), hydrogen peroxide, vitamin E... Nothing worked at all. I felt some temporary relief after oil pulling and swishing with hydrogen peroxide that would last about 30 minutes before the pain started to return. Orajel worked for maybe 20 minutes.I had given up and decided to take apple cider vinegar internally to help with the feeling of malaise (swishing with apple cider vinegar did not help my toothache either). Immediately I felt some relief in the tooth pain. Within about an hour or two the pain had diminished by half. I just thought it was a fluke and stopped taking the apple cider vinegar. The pain came back and lasted for about 2 days. Desperate, I tried the apple cider vinegar again, this time taking it about 2 or 3 times a day. The pain went away completely in 2 days - what a miracle! The pain hasn't come back since. I take ACV maybe once every few days. I have a surgery scheduled to remove my wisdom teeth, but in the meantime, this has been a lifesaver. I wouldn't have thought that taking this internally would help, but it makes sense because most toothaches are due to bacterial infections in the tooth or gum - and ACV is great at getting rid of bacteria infections. By the way, I use the organic kind with the "mother". I've found it is much more effective than other brands.
One last note - if you are having a severe toothache or abcess, please go see your dentist. A dentist won't kill you, but an untreated abcess can. Just bite the bullet and go see your dentist... Even if you don't have health insurance, you might be able to find a dental school near you that offers discounted or free services. Best wishes!!"

I also gargled with the cider vinegar solution and between both, the pain and throbbing disappeared - I slept like a baby. [YEA] 06/14/2011: Carly from Seattle, Wa - Usa: "Hello! I wrote in awhile back about a molar I had had a new and very deep filling in. It was still sensiting to cold and chewing on it was hard to do also. Well, it is now over a month since the filling was put in, and four days ago I started taking some barley grass in water - About one half of a teaspoon 2x a day the first day, building up to about a teaspoon in 12 oz of water first thing in the morning, 1/2 tsp in the afternoon, and 1/2 tsp before bed - (as it seems to relax me, not energize me as some say it can do).
Anyway - I do believe my darned tooth might actually be getting better! The cold sensitivity is no longer shocking me like it was. Such a relief. I know it may just be a coincidence, but I don't think so. After reading about barley grass and finding out how many minerals it has in it, I think it might be just the ticket. I am keeping my fingers crossed!
I have a question about the barley grass origin though. I just ordered some more online and after ordering it I found out this particular brand is grown in China. It is from S----W---- Botanicals, and it has very good reviews on the vitamin site I bought it through (and the price is amazing as well)... BUT! - Now I am wondering, if it is from China how well regulated their food grade products might be? Does anyone have any idea on that? Weren't they the ones with the adulterated milk products a year or so ago? Shoud I be concerned?
I would also really appreciate hearing from anyone else who is or has taken it, and what their experiences were! :-) Thanks!"

[YEA] Diane from Sacramento, California: "Montmorillite form of Bentonite clay. I had an absessed tooth that broke off. The absess was not really painful but my dentist advised a root canal because the tooth was dead. How I wish I would have tried the clay first and just had a temp crown put on. I continued to have a soreness at the root. The pocket of infection had been there for years. I didn't want to do the antibiotic thing or have more work done, so I tried the clay. I simply tucked a pea sized bit of clay with a bit of cotton up at the root where the pain was. The next morning it was somewhat better. I continued for months until every bit of the soreness was gone. It took time but I just know I probably could have healed it without the root canal. I still do it once in awhile because I know dead teeth in your mouth infect the body eventually, per Dr. Weston Price. The one advantage?...It takes almost no effort to do."

[YEA] 11/05/2006: Suzay from BC, Canada: "I used to get extremely painful toothaches. I remembered my mom telling me once about Blackstrap Molasses being full of nutrients (calcium and magnesium) in large amounts in general. So I thought I'd try it the next time my tooth ache occurred, and within half an hour, my tooth ache was completely gone. When my young daughters had growing pains, I decided to also try this on them: (1 tbsp) followed by any liquid (water ,milk, juice, just to wash it down). Her growing pain had stopped. As I had figured these tooth problems and shin aches may have been from a calcium/magnesium deficiency. The pain had left her in under half an hour. I believe from my own research that if the body does not get enough calcium it will leach it from other areas. thus the pain."

I too have found cal-mag very effective in reducing tooth pain. I've been taking cal-mag for almost 20 years with good results. When I don't take cal-mag for a week or so my tooth begins hurting and when I take the cal-mag regularly I have few tooth problems.
In the past few months I have had to take 10-12 large cal-mag soft gels to help my teeth. I think that I became resistant to the rock mineral and oyster shell based cal-mag. has caused me to have very loose stools.
A helpful clerk at a health food store showed me natural cal-mag made from seaweeds. So far it's fantastic. I only have to take 3 small tablets with perfect results. No tooth pain! No loose stools! Maybe it will work for you too."

CASHEWS

01/03/2011: Tom from Regina, Sk: "Lisa:
For future reference, here's something:
RAW cashew nuts! But there would seem to be evidence that they may not even have to be raw, in which case a can of cashews might work, too.
http://members.tripod.com/~charles_W/tooth.html
Gram positive bacteria, which cause tooth decay, acne, tuberculosis, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Francisella tularensis, and leprosy are killed by anacardic chemicals (salicylic acid with an unsaturated aliphatic side chain) in cashew nuts, cashew apples, and cashew shell oil. A sixth time with cashews required several days. It is possible that just eating a couple of ounces each day for a week or so would work also and might avoid any intolerance to cashew nuts. I have tried this successfully on another occasion. It is said that the people of the Gold Coast use cashew leaves and bark for a toothache. Vietnam has the highest per capita consumption of cashews, so this would be a good place to look for epidemiological evidence. Indeed, Vietnam has had a much lower rate of caries than other grain eating areas for the last several thousand years. The active chemicals are anacardic acids with a 15 carbon unsaturated side chain. The side chain with three unsaturated bonds was the most active against Streptococcus mutans, the tooth decay bacterium, in test tube experiments. The number of unsaturated bonds were not material against Propionibacterium acnes, the acne bacterium [#3 Kubo, et al 1993 p1018. Heating these anacardic acids converts them to the alcohols (cardinols) but does not destroy their activity against S. mutans [#4 Himajima & Kubo 1991 p419. I suspect that these chemicals are volatile, however, which is why I used the raw cashew nuts. Also it has been determined that high heat causes decarboxylation of anacardic acid [#14 Patel. Eichbaum claims that one part to 200,000 to as high as 2,000,000 parts of solution of anacardic acid is lethal to gram positive bacteria in 15 minutes [#4 Eichbaum. Somewhat higher ratios killed tubercle bacteria of tuberculosis in 30 minutes.

A couple cashews chewed up morning and night to control it (do not brush the nutty Film off)... Then 3 or 4 times a day when it abcessed and it was back to normal in less than a week. But duh! Limit sweets and brush after eating the stuff... A candy jag is what got mine abscessed.
This year I discovered that cashews could get rid of my ulcer. Dr OZ pointed out that h-pylori was affected by cashew products. So after my Dr. Couldn't verify the h-pylori I tried 2 cashews every waking hour for 2 weeks. After the third day the pain was much less but I stuck with it for 2 weeks. I did a repeat of 2 weeks after a week off just to be sure. 4 months later feeling great! My friend who also had h-pylori was tested 4 times before diagnosis. She suffered a lot taking the antibiotics for it and still has A painful gut 6 months later... Hmmm... After 2 years of suffering I am pain free!! I love my cashews!! I use the "raw" ones too."

Abscess tooth WITH SUPER SORE swollen jaw.
This recipe is famous for getting that abscess down (even beneath a crown tooth)
3 parts Slippery Elm, 2 parts baking yeast, 4 drops cloves, 1/3 teaspoon cayenne pepper, and open two activated caracole capsules and mix..
Add a little water enough to make a paste. It will be gummy due to the slippery elm. Then pack this mixture around the gum. The slippery elm, and charcoal, draws out the inflammation, the cayenne stimulates the cells around the tooth to release toxins and the cloves are added as a pain remedy, especially toothache. repeat every three to four hours as needed.
NEXT: Back it up by taking two capsules of turmeric in the AM and also two in the PM..TILL SWELING AND PAIN GO AWAY.
MAN MY TOOTH WAS SO SORE THAT I COULD NOT CLOSE MY MOUTH (ate soup and mash potato's) AND (DAY ONE) WITHIN HOURS I GOT SUCH RELEIF.......

CLOVE OIL, TEA TREE OIL

12/25/2011: Summer from Fukouka, Japan: "To: Mr Ted.... I have a question
I had a root canal done in a right upper tooth when I was 15 years old. Everything was o.k. Until I was pregnant with my daughter about 9 years ago. The gum was infected (around the area of root canal) a large pus from root canal was hurting my mouth. I was put on antibiotics twice during my pregnancy. My oral surgeon drained the pus after I gave a birth to my daughter. That was 9 years ago.
I began to have pain in the same area this summer. Once more I saw my dentist and he told me that I needed to extract the tooth. To make a long story short, I found a dentist who would do a re-root canal. He did a re-root canal for me this October of 2011 and put a new crown. His comment was there would be no guarantee that this tooth would last long. I thought he was saying to me indirectly that I need to extract this tooth eventually. My gum area was again started hurting about 2-3 weeks ago, so I put clove oil and tea tree oil in where I was hurting. Fortunately all my pain is gone and I feel that this tooth will last long. Do you think these oil are getting rid of my infection? I understand we cannot wipe out infection from root canal completely.
I really want to keep all my teeth including the one I talked about. Is there any other recommendation to keep the tooth other than what I am doing right now? (using oil) Sincerely, Summer"

CLOVES

[YEA] 05/15/2011: Wexcellent from Oregon City, Oregon, Usa: "About 2 months ago I started developing a toothache in a tooth I already have had a root canal and crown on. It was very sensitive to pressure (not to cold which tells me the nerves inside are dead) and was starting to throb and ache more and more. I had almost resigned myself to go to the dentist where the solution would likely have been to pull it what else would they do? Maybe they would have tried to treat it first with antibiotics. Anyway, I got on Earth Link looking for advice on temporary relief. After reading through a bunch of what people said I decided to synthesize a couple of the solutions. I spent about $18 on activated charcoal capsules and clove oil and mixed the two with a little olive oil into a paste. I put it in an emptied tea bag and used it as a compress between my cheek and gum next to the affected tooth. I left it there about an hour in the evening. I also put a couple of drops of clove oil on a cotton ball and held it against the area on the with my tongue for awhile at the same time. I just spit the nasty saliva in a cup because I didn't want to swallow it and I was worried the cloves might upset my stomach. That night it provided temporary relief, though I could still tell something was wrong and I still had the referred pain in my cheek and lower teeth on the same side.
However, in the morning I woke up early and went out to breakfast with someone. It wasn't until I got home that I realized my tooth not only didn't hurt anymore but that I'd been chewing on that side of mouth without even thinking about it. I was expecting the pain to return but it hasnt yet - there has been no recurrence at all in the last two months.
Since then I provided this information to a friends wife who was suffering with a temporary crown and she had similar results, she treated the area twice.
NOTE: My local store didn't have clove oil so the first try I just put ground cloves in with the activated charcoal. It might have provided some relief but it was negligible.
Wexcellent"

I 1st put it on a piece of gauze with very little relief, I then put it on a Qtip and put it on the tooth site and I have NO PAIN now. Thank you so very much for this site.
God Bless"
09/24/2010: Mindy from Sandy, Utah replies: "One time when I had a terrible toothache on a weekend and also had no insurance, I called around trying to find a dentist who would see me. Finally one dentist told me that there was a product available at the drug store called Tooth Aid. I went and got it and it was a God send. The package contains cotton balls, the bottle of medicine and a pair of tweezers. You dip a tiny piece of cotton into the bottle and squeeze out what you can. Then you try to get the small piece between the two teeth nearest the ache. It can be hard to do if the teeth are close together. It did work beautifully and took away the pain for quite a long time. When one of my children had an abcess, I couldn't get the cotton between his teeth and the oil began to burn his gums, so I found a better trick that I now use all the time. I get a q-tip wet with water and then barely touch it to the medicine. Then I rub it on the sore spot very gently. This finally provided him with relief. Used this way I had to do it more often but it didn't burn his gums. Since that time I've found other similar products at Walgreen's and Rite-aid that I've purchased. They all seem to have Eugenol as their active ingredient. I think this is a form of clove oil. I also coupled this with Melaleuca Tea Tree Oil. One of the properties of the tea tree oil is that is pulls the infection to one spot, which makes it easier to 'pop' and drain.
One last tip that I used to use before I found the oil trick. When I was in severe pain the only thing that helped was to rub a baby aspirin on the gums by the sore tooth. When I told the dentist how I made it through till I got in to him he warned me that this can do damage to the gums, but at the time I wouldn't have cared because the pain was so severe. Hope this helps someone."
