[WARNING!] 12/06/2012: Sagemarie from Reston, Va: "I made the unwise decision of drinking some pretty strong laxative tea last week when it wasnt needed... Since then ive been constipated unless I use another laxative tea. I dont want to have to take laxative tea everynight! Help!!"Replies
12/06/2012: Tina from Houston, Usa replies: "Sagemarie from Reston, Va You could try -
1) Adding good quality probiotics to your diet or probiotic-rich foods like kefir (milk or water), kombucha, sauerkraut (Bubbies brand) and fermented veggies are effective at resolving constipation.
2) Drinking nettle leaf infusion which is full of trace minerals and vitamins that aid in maintaining healthy & smooth bowl movements. I buy my nettles from http://www.mountainroseherbs.com/ and you could try other places too, organic is best.
3) Good quality magnesium before sleeping allows the body to fall asleep and helps in bowel movements the next day. I successfully use Natural Calm found on Amazon. You mix 2 teaspoons in 1/2 cup warm water and drink before bed, and it does your body good.
This should help yor body come back to balance and you will be fine in no time.
12/06/2012: Lisa from Thousand Oaks, Ca, Usa replies: "Hi Sagemarie, When I was much younger this happened to me a couple of times and one can see why people become reliant on them. On the other hand, constipation is upsetting too. First, your body is trying to balance itself back out, so in a sense it holds on after such a "violent" means of evacuating. Now, what you can do is on a regular, daily basis start taking chia seeds. I use them in a fermented drink and it is absolutely amazing. Besides keeping you very regular, the benefits are innumerable. Just google and find out about what a superfood they are! Hope this helps. Lisa"

[YEA] 05/17/2008: Tandy from Orange County, CA: "Constipation remedy (lemon juice and olive oil) -- thank you for posting this remedy. i have had bowl movement problems since i was in highschool and i've gone to the doctors taken medication and many laxatives and even gone to the emergancy because it got so bad with stomach pains. But this actually worked for me. i just tried it worked. thankyou so much. i'm going to keep this in mind."Replies
05/18/2008: Joyce from Joelton, Tn. replies: "To Tandy with bowel problems since high school - Change to more healthy eating habits to increase fiber in the diet. My first suggestion is to switch to whole grain breads and cereals and especially increasing the green leafy vegetables, as well as fresh fruits (apples & pears especially help regulate bowels also."
08/19/2011: Puffer from Melbourne, Australia replies: "hi thankyou for yr ideas... I hope that these work as I have not been for 12 days."
[YEA] 09/03/2012: Fitnessgal from Fort Worth, Tx replies: "So very thankful to have found this solution as I am 8 months pregnant and there are not a lot of things I can try for constipation. It had been over a week since I've been able to go with no avail. I took 1 tsp olive oil, 1 tsp lemon juice, & a pinch of salt. It took 5 hours and finally had a small movement. Then in another hour had another small movement. The next day I was able to go again. I'm so much more comfortable now! Will skip a day and then take the solution again at bedtime as another user suggested. Thanks for posting this!!!!!!!"
[YEA] 11/16/2012: Grace from London, Uk replies: "Thank you for posting this! This remedy works well. I just took 1 tsp fresh lemon juice and 1 tsp olive oil on an empty stomach and had some immediate relief! I shall persist with this. I had tried a fiber plus probiotics and prebiotics supplement, senna tea and aloe vera, all of which probably did no harm but I saw no results. Lemon and olive oil works a treat! "
[YEA] 07/19/2006: Colleen from Vancouver: "My six year old son was constipated, and instead of using over the counter medication/remedies I tried the lemon and olive oil. He only took it 2 times (mid morning & after lunch), and he had a regular bowel movement before the night. The sour from the lemon was a bit too much for him, so i put a pinch of salt in the mix, which was suggested in someone's feedback."
[YEA] 07/16/2006: Kat : "it is one of the best & natural ways that i was able to stop my constipation. I had everything I needed at home. The lemon and oil didn't mix completely, but i would put a pinch of salt in the lemon juice to take away the sourness."Replies
[YEA] 10/20/2010: Elaine from Chicago, Il replies: "I have suffered with constipation for years... I mean two digit number of years. I have tried every remedy around. I did not want to try the olive oil and lemon; it just sounded awful (to drink oil). I finally was fed up and gave it a try. I mixed 1 tsp EV olive oil with 1 tsp lemon juice and added a sprinkle of salt (some recommended that for taste) and drank it down. Well, 15 minutes later I had relief, like I have never had before!! I give this remedy 10 thumbs up! When constipation is relieved, so are so many other issues in your body! Someone said they take it at night and wake with an easy BM. I am so glad I found this remedy. BTW, people tend to like to suggest fiber to those who are constipated and fiber may cause people who suffer from constipation to feel much worse. I was one of them, it made me so bloated and gassy. I looked it up on the Internet and it IS NOT for everyone."
09/16/2011: Jen from Bozeman, Mt, Us replies: "I am going to have to agree with the fiber only being good for some people. My 10 yr old daughter has been constipated since she was 4 months old (when she started formula). We have been told by every single doctor, naturopath, Gastroenterologist and on and on. Fiber Fiber Fiber blah blah blah. It has always made her life way worse. She eats so many fruits and veggie's that most mom's would be amazed. She is amazing at eating raisins, prunes, dates but they do nothing for her. Before we took away gluten she ate only whole wheat pasta and bread which made her constipated for 3 weeks whenever she ate it.
Now that she does not eat gluten she goes only about 7 to 9 days without a bm. Stop with the fiber already. You can find info on how some people (especially children) cannot handle fiber and it can actually make constipation worse. I just started her on stomach enzymes and they seem to be working pretty well. She has had bm's about every two to three days. I am not getting my hopes up because she usually does well on everything we try for about a month and then she reverts back to 1 to 2 weeks between bm's. We are praying this is the final answer. The other thing I actually just started is iodine. She is taking kelp 2 times a day so far at about 250 mcg each. So I will post updates in a couple weeks to let you know if things are still going good."
[YEA] 07/06/2006: Enza from Hamilton, ON CANADA: "1 TBSP FRESH SQUEEZED LEMON MIXED WITH 1 TBSP OF EXTRA VIRGIN OLIVE OIL. Take mixture 2-3 times a day until it relieves constipation. Stop taking the mixture once you have a normal bowel movement. It works great."Replies
[YEA] 06/11/2008: Kalia from DC, United States replies: "Constipation Remedies: wow! This worked within 3 minutes and 15 seconds. I highly recommend the orange/lemon juice and olive oil treatment for anyone suffering the agony of immobile bowel."
11/19/2008: Linda from Erlanger, Ky replies: "Hello, so you only drink the 1 TBSP of the lemon juice and olive oil, you do not mix it with water, just those 2 things, 1 TBSP of each, is that correct? Thank you :)"
[YEA] 11/25/2008: Linda from Erlanger, Ky replies: "Wow, I tried this concoction and yes indeed it works. Just a TBSP of each in a small glass, gulp it down, late in the PM and low and behold the next AM we have a BM! haha Thanks for the great advice!"
Lemon Juice in Hot Water
[YEA] 01/17/2009: Angie from Astoria, NY: "I was having problems having bowel movements. A friend recommended 2 tbsps of lemon juice in hot water on an empty stomach. It helped so much. I do this everyday and don't have problems anymore. I tried fiber supplements and became bloated with pain."Replies
[YEA] 01/31/2012: Lis11 from Richmond, Va replies: "This works for me and I do it everyday.
Hot water, squeeze lemon/lime water into it, add about 1tb molasses or less, olive oil, 3-4 prunes. Mix and let it stand for 5 mins so the prunes can absorb some water. This works like a charm every single time. Sometimes I run out of lemons or I forget to add olive oil.. It's okay if you do. Exact measurements are not important. It still works!! I will also occasionally add other things to my tonic.. Like a small pinch of turmeric/ cinnamon etc.. you can experiment with what works for you.
Additional note: mind over matter.. Be kind to yourself. Take time to breath and relax. It really helps to be aware of your internal dialogue to see how you talk to yourself.
Magnesium Remedy for Constipation
Folk Cure Options
- Magnesium Supplements
- Epsom Salt Baths
- Transdermal Magnesium
Adding magnesium supplements to your diet might be all it takes for regular, pain-free bowel movements. Epsom salt bathing and transdermal magnesium supplementation are preferred methods.
[YEA] 03/17/2013: Carriec from Southern Utah, Usa: "I am one that has had constipation problems since I was a child. A couple years ago I found Magnesium did wonders, and since the product 'C--m' came out in the powdered form I just purchased the magnesium as Magnesium Citrate POWDER. It's less than $10 bucks and you can easily stir the amount you need in water. I drink it before bedtime. I sleep like a baby thru the nite, and, like clockwork, have a bowel movement in the morning. For someone who has struggled with this condition since age 4 (which means 4 decades now) I feel like I have found the miracle cure and I'm finally "normal". For those that don't like the sour taste of citrate, I mix some Stevia in it. I sure wish my mother would have known of the simplicity of Magnesium Citrate Powder when I was a child. It's so simple and easy for a child to take. You could easily mix it with orange juice or the like. I just hope this information helps you mothers out there. Like many other posts have stated, we seem to be a magnesium deficient people right now."
[YEA] 10/03/2012: Anon from Anon: "I've tried psyllium, magnesium sulfate, teas, salt water. They all work, but taking a single magnesium pill works faster and seems much gentler. And it doesn't taste bad. Don't recall the dosage. I try to take zinc, potassium, calcium with it to keep the minerals balanced. It seems to work for indigestion, too. Might work for acid reflux, which I don't get."
[YEA] 07/10/2009: Anna from Dayton, OH: "I worked with a famous local herbalist and many people came in with constipation problems. My friend would have a bowel movement once a week. My other older friend would have to go to the hospital periodically because of constipation. The remedy that worked for me and both of my friends was magnesium. I take 2 magnesium (200 to 250 mg apiece)for insomnia every night. Every morning when I wake up I naturally have a bm. According to my herbalist magnesium relaxes every cell of your body and we don't get enough of it. My younger friend with constipation was tested for 12 (200mg) tabs a day till her bowels got loose enough and then she was to back down-taking less-till she found how manny worked well for her. My herbalist used to say you can't get enough magnesium-your body needs it so much. Whether that is true or not I don't know. But I do know it's the best solution for my constipation and insomnia."Replies
[YEA] 04/09/2010: Mana_olana from Bremerton, Wa replies: "Magnesium 'citrate' really helps me have a more regular BM. I take medications and have not been regular. It also relaxes you just a bit before bedtime, nothing heavy. I am very happy w/ the results. Found it in powder form at health food store, mix with four oz hot water, drink as a tea."
[YEA] 04/25/2011: Bg43214 from Columbus, Oh, Usa replies: "I tried the ACV 'solution' for constipation and had very bad luck with it........
Now I use magnesium capsules, 500 mg. , and take one each day after suppertime...... I did not have really bad constipation, but thought I could do better in that 'department', so to speak!!
I took one capsule for 10 days in a row and got incredible results..... now I will try taking one every other day for 10 days to see what happens with that 'dosage'.......
I'm one of those 'every 2 - 3 days' kinda guys; imagine my utter amazement when, within 3 days, I was 'going' every day for 6 days in a row!!! And without any diarrhea-type misery!! I never in my life did that.......... but now I'm going to experiment with the every other day and see how that works out.....
Believe me, if you've tried everything with no luck, try magnesium capsules!!!!!!
They are far better than forcing down Apple Cider Vinegar with water everyday!! YUK!!
so grab yourself some magnesium capsules and away you'll go!!!!!!!!!!!"
[YEA] 01/02/2012: Dimple from Sandpoint, Idaho, Usa replies: "I have had issues with constipation most of my life. For a long time I used wheat bran, and it worked quite well, but I developed an allergy to wheat. Nothing else worked until, after I found this site, I read about using magnesium. I had some epsom salts, so I dissolved some in water and drank it. It worked well, and I had relief next morning. Now I take Magnesium oxide tablets, 250 mg, one 3 times a day. Problem solved!"
06/28/2009: Joyce from Joelton, Tn: "The more popular types of magnesium for constipation is the liquid magnesium citrate or another liquid called Milk of Magnesium.
But dietary changes to include more fiber and water is the best way to rid oneself of constipation problems and this is done by switching to whole grain breads and cereals and eating lots of those good old healthy leafy green vegetables."
[YEA] 12/18/2007: fauna from lynnwood, wa: "I love love love, what magnesium has done for me. I was constipated for the last 30 years of my life. I was in a lot of discomfort and even excluded myself from social gatherings because of gas and bloating. Once a week was the norm most times less. I feel like I have wasted a lot of my life because of this problem. I added magnesium to my diet because of a problem I am having with my teeth, and what do you know, regular, like clockwork bowel movements. I have also added oatmeal to my diet, but by using the magnesium regularly, I feel so much better. Those who rely on laxatives are really missing the boat on this one, and should strongly rethink how they treat their bodies. Even though I should be laxative dependent, I never stooped to that way of life, but I know that a lot of women rely on laxatives to produce bowel movements. I feel freed by this information and only wish I had had it 30 years earlier."Replies
[YEA] 04/12/2009: KT from Irvine, California, USA replies: "This page has changed my life & constipation of 36 years!!!!!!!!!! It got so severe last year that I had to quit work to find the holy grail that would defeat my DNA, heredity, bad karma, stinginess (which leads to constipation) .. you name it. Needless to say constipation runs in my family. I had tried pills, herbs, various home remedies to no avail specially since last year. Coconut oil worked like a miracle too, but what really got my colon going is Calcium-Magnesium (citrate) in liquid form and some patience. It took 2 weeks to kick in but boy, I have been regular like clockwork in the morning, defeating all odds!! Moreover I have started eating foods & meats that gave me constipation earlier and it is really working wonders. I just take a tblspoon after dinner in lukewarm water. Sometimes, the solution is simple to life's biggest problems, we just need to find the solution. Magnesium really helps draw water to the colon, thereby easing the waste-elimination. Of course eat healthy and drink lots of water. And be patient with the remedies you try before they work."
08/03/2011: Chad from Minneapolis, Mn replies: "Could you tell us me what brand of magnesium you use?"
[YEA] 11/07/2007: Nat from Brooklyn, New York: "Thank you for a good work. We have been trying some of the suggestions on your site and have found them helpful in many areas.
Your site showed that magnesium citrate (600 Mg) was very helpful for overcoming constipation. It is very good especially when implemented together with some other things. Here is how it seemed to work best. In the morning, one takes three magnesium citrate tablets (one hundred mg in each) with a glass of tap water mixed with a few drops of Ume Plum vinegar (which has salt in it) available from Eden foods. Maybe any vinegar mixed with salt might also work well. The mixture should not be overly salty, just pleasantly salty. Vitamin C 300 to 1000 - can also be taken together with the magnesium citrate. A short while after that one takes a glass or two of plain cold water from the tap. Let it run for short while. Then a little after that (or even right after that), one takes boiled hot water mixed with one or two tablespoons toasted bran (Kretchmers sells toasted bran), (regular raw bran might also work well), and about the same amount, or a little bit less, toasted wheat germ, adding some more plum vinegar (or maybe any vinegar with salt) to the mixture to make it pleasantly salty. Stir and sip or drink this mixture. One may need a spoon to eat the bran and wheat germ that has settled to the bottom. (At times, a papain tablet and a betaine hydrochloride tablet can be taken with the magnesium citrate, though it may not be necessary. Vitamin C is helpful. It also helps improve the quality of one's sleep and may help a person fall back asleep when awakening in middle of the night.)
After all this, one can eat some fruit, such as papaya, which is excellent for overcoming constipation, or stewed figs, raisins or prunes, stewed or soaked in water and olive oil, and eaten when still hot or at least warm. One can also eat any other fruit or even a regular breakfast.
In general, raw fruits, vegetables and vegetable salads should be an important part of one's daily food. Lettuce (romaine in particular) and escarole are especially helpful. Hot drinks and hot soups are also helpful.
In the late afternoon one takes another three magnesium citrate tablets together with a glass of water mixed with a few more drops of the salty plum vinegar and if one feels the need, another tablespoon or two of bran and wheat germ.
One should also avoid drinking a lot of milk and any hard cheeses or fried foods or other such foods and eat clean simple foods.
There should, with help from Above, be significant improvement.
The suggestion for using bran and wheat germ in a hot drink came from the letters from readers section of a health magazine* from many years ago. It was later written up in a book on natural healing **The person, who suggested it in her letter, said to use it in hot coffee twice a day.
The book also mentions bran, papaya, sunflower seeds, garlic and escarole. (Garlic is recommended in the name of Hippocrates and also in the name of a leading expert in garlic therapy who recommends mixing garlic with (milk?) or yogurt. Garlic is also recommended for relieve of diarrhea.) Escarole is recommended by someone who found miraculous help from the suggestion to cook escarole in water and to drink this escarole water and by another person who ate the escarole raw.
Thank you for letting me share this.
**(Miracle Medicine Foods by Rex Adams, published by Warner Books. This book is probably out of print.)"
[YEA] 10/14/2007: Karan from Calgary, Canada: "I was skeptical when I read on this website that magnesium could 'cure' chronic constipation....I am no longer skeptical! It works! I had been struggling for months, tried it last week, and I am happy to report that all is well is my world! I have been taking 750 mg of magnesium at bed time, but I am going to reduce that amount because it is a bit too effective. I am so overjoyed that when I get up in the morning now, I can go! With ease! I also sleep better with use of the magnesium! A lot of bang for your buck!"
[YEA] 01/23/2007: Joan from Elkton, VA: "After viewing reader comments on your web site, I tried magnesium oxide to relieve IBS with constipation. My doctor had prescribed Zelnorm twice a day, and I had used it for three years. It worked quite well, but I was having to live my life around scheduling my medication and meals so the Zelnorm would be effective. If I didn't allow one hour after taking it before I ate a meal, the constipation along with bloating and nausea would return. I just couldn't see living the rest of my life like that. Not to mention the expense of taking a one-of-a-kind drug. Then while researching IBS with constipation, I noticed your web site. I began taking 250 mg magnesium oxide on an empty stomach first thing when I awaken each morning. By the time I'm ready for breakfast, it has had its desired effect. Thanks so much! I am so appreciative of the help I found."
[YEA] 08/18/2006: Anonymous : "Magnesium citrate powder, mixed with hot water. Adjust the dosage as necessary, starting with 1 teaspoon, taken in the morning and the evening. It works fantastically well!"
