OLIVE OIL AND ORANGE JUICE

2 YEA
1 NAY

[YEA]  12/23/2006: Nicki from Ontario, Canada writes: "It's not on this site, I don't think. For severe constipation (I had no movement for 5 days), I tried equal amounts of olive oil and orange juice. I had 1 cup of this in total, you may be able to get away with less. Within 15 minutes, there was movement. I was able to have many soft bowel movements after that. It was incredible. I also find eating 1/3 cup of Bran with Psyillium every day will help in getting back on track, going forward."

[NAY]  08/01/2009: Allie from New Haven, Connecticut replies: "Have been constipated for 7 days as a side effect of medicine for headaches. I tried 1/2 c. olive oil and 1/2 c of orange juice. 2 hours later, no bm but I was gagging and vomited. It takes a lot to make me vomit. I may never be able to taste olive oil again. Still coming up in burps. Sorry so graphic. Maybe this remedy would work for someone that doesn't already have a slow intestinal motility."

01/23/2010: Dj from Pdx, Or, Usa replies: "Allie,

I am hoping that after all this time you have been cured from your constipation.

It is worth mentioning that if a person is constipated and is vomiting seeking medical help is highly recommended.

Vomiting may be caused from the intestines being completely blocked and vomiting is the only way the waste can be evacuated by the body."

PINEAPPLE JUICE

[YEA]  08/22/2006: Lisa from Missouri writes: "Pineapples! Fresh pineapple juice works great. I have a juicer and have it every morning. I'm not sure about store bought seeing as they usually have additives in the juice. A juicer is the best investment you'll ever make."

This resulted in not only a cleansing but an end to constipation after trying it myself. It is also good to drink a glass of water as well to wash it down."

PSYLLIUM HUSKS

1 YEA

[YEA]  07/02/2006: KC from Columbia, South Carolina writes: "I have tried and am still using this for constipation and bloating. This only cost me $6 for 1 lb. and it has been a miracle for me. I had tried Colonix for colon cleansing and it was a very dramatic experience for me. I believe it was more or less a laxative with additives to get you addicted and it gave you close to diarrhea. I felt like had to go to the bathroom all of the time. So I had developed even more anxiety which lead to IBS I believe. Anyways- It has been a few months and I tried this cheap natural remedy and it works! I've been using it a little more than a week and I've seen greater results than Colonix had ever promised. I just followed the recipe on this site which had led me to the road of happiness. Thanks!"

RAISINS, FIGS, PRUNES

1 YEA

[YEA]  01/02/2007: Nat from Brooklyn, NY writes: "Comment on helping constipation.

Simmer one half cup of raisins, or a half cup mixture of raisins, figs, and prunes with water and olive oil for a few minutes.

Or, pour boiling water and olive oil to just cover the raisins, or the raisins, prunes and figs mixture.

Or soak over night with tap water and some olive oil. (Check the figs to see that they have no bugs on or in them.)

Then add some toasted wheat germ and toasted bran to this mixture. (Krechmer's (the company that makes toasted wheat germ also makes toasted bran. For some people it may, help more than raw bran.)

Add one, two or three tablespoons bran and one or two tablespoon wheat germ to the mixture.

Add some organic Wheatabix (a cereal from England). (The Wheatabix may help more than Fiber One or Uncle Sam's or Good Friends High fiber cereal. May be because it is organic.)

Then add a little bit hot milk and maybe some sucanet.

Eat this every morning. It may take some time to heal the system but after a few days or a week there should be improvement. One can simmer, at one time, olive oil and water with a whole box of raisins or the raisin/prune/fig combination and store it in the refrigerator, taking out a half cup of the mixture every day. (Till the body begins to normalize itself and for emergency usage one can use polyethelen glycol (golightely) by doctor's prescription.

It is not habit forming and will even help for a few days after its use is stopped, but if one uses it for more than two weeks it can cause electrolite imbalance. It can then bring about some hyperactivity, jumpiness or wakefulness. Nevertheless, until the body normalizes itself, it is less harmful than other laxatives. In an old Prevention magazine a reader once recommended, as a powerful remedy for constipation, drinking, twice a day, hot coffee with two tablespoons wheat germ and two tablespoons unprocessed (raw) bran in it. This can be taken first thing in the morning and then again in the afternoon. One can add some sucanet or xylitol sweetener, or molasses. Even a bit of milk to make it palatable is all right for most people. One can take the hot coffee drink and then the raisin/olive oil/hot water/bran/wheat germ/wheatabix mixture afterward as a morning cereal. Hot fiber liquids (example â€" hot oily bean soup, hot pumpkin squash soup ( blend the soup with the seeds) and hot sweet drinks (not chocolate) are very helpful. Raw fruits and vegetables. Papaya has helped some people when other things did not. Avoid low fiber foods such as starchy bakery foods, rice, pasta. Avoid chocolates, and too much protein. It seems once that for a time a mixture of an eighth of a tsp each of carnitine powder, TMG powder and calcium pyruvate helped, all bought from Beyond a Century - 800-7771324 - a company that has very reasonable prices on supplement powders. At this time it may not be really helping as it was before. Chewing dry a tablespoon of toasted or raw bran. Follow a little while later with a hot drink. Fruit Eze, (fruiteze.com- 888-734-8527-or 503-297-4126) is a commercial mixture of dates, raisins, prunes and prune juice that is made for use in nursing homes. One might try using it with the olive oil and the toasted wheat germ/bran/ Wheatabix mixture. It is certified vegetarian and kosher."

RAW CABBAGE

1 YEA

[YEA]  10/29/2006: Carol from Southern NJ writes: "I eat about 1 cup of raw Savoy Cabbage a day with a meal. It relieved my roller coaster episodes of diarrhea in one day...and constipation for the next week. Also it helped with PMS. I can think more clearly, I have a higher energy level, my mood is improved, and I feel really healthy."

11/24/2009: Jens from Vancouver, Bc, British Columbia Canada replies: "It would seem internal healing of the digestive system/gut, is the key and I've been greatly helped by bringing fermented foods into my diet. I had used coffee in the a.m. for years as my "motivator". Finally caught up with me. It's a horrible crutch that requires always having access to coffee and cream wherever I went. It stopped working and I went through 10 days of being a human sewage lagoon. In my web research I came across this site and the saltwater remedy got me going although I had to gag it down. I realized a new and longterm solution was required. My naturopath suggested introducing fermented foods into my diet as a long term solution. In my web research I came across a hidden away little blog that talks about, not only fermenting (recipes included) but also presents an inspiring lifestyle and a way of eating for overall health.

SEA SALT CLEANSE

7 YEA
2 NAY

[NAY]  03/28/2009: David from NY, NY writes: "I tried the Sea Salt cleanse this morning and it did nothing for me :( I've been reading and it seems to work for just about everyone who tries it. I would like to know if someone can give any feedback on why it didn't work.

From what I gathered reading the Sea Salt cleanse is this: 2 teaspoons of Sea Salt in 1 quart/liter (32oz)of warm water. And you should have a bowel movement/diarrhea within 15 minutes - 2 hours.

That's exactly what I did. I heated up the water just till it got warm /hot then added the 2 teaspoons of CELTIC sea salt, mixed it and drank it down in like 10 minutes. Nothing happened for 2 hours except for a couple of tiny farts and some small stomach noises. But I should add that just about 2 hours after taking the drink I did have a slight bowel movement which I had to strain kind of to get out and it was small solid nuggets and not diarrhea/liquid form at all which I find odd. (sorry for being a little graphic there)

I read somewhere that if you don't have diarrhea after 2 hours, then you did not put enough salt in.

Tomorrow I will try 3 teaspoons in a quart of warm water and hopefully have a cleanse.

If anyone can possibly help me out here I would appreciate it."

[YEA]  03/28/2009: Anne from Carlsbad, California replies: "I did a Salt Water Flush also this morning. Works great. But, maybe you are really clogged up. I would wait a few days, then try again. Did the salt dissolve completely? Maybe try warmer water. Also, lie on your right side for about 15 minutes if you can. The water will empty into your intestine faster. You will know if you are empty! I do this about every other week, or if I have eaten something I shouldn't have, I do it the next morning if I have time. Good luck! "

[YEA]  07/02/2008: Michelle from Roseville, CA writes: "I have tried so many remedies over the years for my constipation. Many have been rather costly. My nutritionist told me about a simple, cheap, and effective way to give yourself a good cleanse and help you to stay regular. First of all, the #1 cause of constipation is not drinking enough water. The #2 cause is not enough good salt in your diet. He told me to do this first thing in the morning before anything else: get a big glass of water, about 32 ounces. Add 1 tsp of good sea salt (Hawaiian pink salt is the best-- I use Premier) to the water. Drink it all down, probably within 15 minutes. (I think it is easier to drink a lot of water in the morning because your stomach is empty and it won't make you feel bloated) I tried this 2 days in a row and within a few hours I had a great cleanse. Not a hard one, but very easy and cleansing! I will continue to do this each and every day. Sometimes it's hard to drink water constantly throughout the day, although it is good for you, this is easy! And it doesn't taste gross! And the salt is good for you too for so many other things! I can't wait to see how this is going to effect my mood, my skin, my energy, etc! And to add, this may be harder, but it works better too if you try not to eat past 8pm. I have a horrible habit but I am working on that too. Think this will all make me sleep better and overall feel better!"

[YEA]  03/11/2008: Erynn from New Haven, Connecticut writes: "Sea Salt cure for Constipation. Works like a charm! Although I've tried this two ways. I've use epsom salt as well...but it is quite gross and you may throw up, so sea salt is much easier on the taste buds. It could take anywhere from 10mins to 2 hours. If its not working, try drinking more water...the salt is dehydrating your system!! This is probably the most comfortable way than taking a laxative. I tend to get cramping from everything else, ie sienna tea. sea salt is the way to go!"

09/18/2008: Nina from Oslo, Norway replies: "Dear Jeanne, sorry to hear about the trip to the ER. I'm not very familiar with the remedies on this webpage, so I'm not trying to promote anything, but it is possible that IF you had to go to the ER, your constipation was already quiet serious. I've never heard of anyone ever do that before, so it's not really that strange that these natural remedies didn't work for you."

03/10/2009: Veronica from San Antonio, Texas replies: "My daughter has been in the hospital for intestinal impaction (she has a genetic disorder that predisposes her to it) so I have some experience with this. If you had to go to the hospital for impaction then you were way beyond natural remedies or over the counter medicines. My daughter was in the hospital for 3 days w/an IV, on a liquid diet, given enemas and stool softeners."

03/11/2009: Joyce from Joelton, Tn replies: "Hello Jeanne,

Sorry you are having trouble, but in case you do return to read EC again, the best way to handle constipation is with diet. Your body can't do it's work, unless you feed it what it needs to do it. When it comes to constipation think of 3 things, fiber, water and exercise. It needs all three. The first change to make in your diet is to start eating whole grain breads and cereals. Next increase fresh fruits, green leafy vegetables, high fiber foods like celery, brocolli, etc. The body also needs plenty of good water to function normally also. I recall the patient who came in with a fecal impaction composed of popcorn husks. I'd lay odds that most of that popcorn was eaten while being a couch potato in front of the TV and he probably only drank 4 or 5 cups of coffee a day.

Some foods are better than others for prompting our intestines to work. Plums (or the dried version called prunes & prune juice), grapes and apples. Apple juice works great for me when needed. I love spinach salads but found they also delivered a laxative effect.

Asking your intestines to work normally on a junk food diet is like asking yourself to catch and hold onto a greased pig."

03/11/2009: MAG from Flat Rock, NC replies: "Joyce, regarding the constipation the person had no luck with the sea salt, remember that constipation seems to be on of the telltale symptoms that those with gluten sensitivity/celiac have. What is it with people who need to bash the ideas on Earth Clinic? "Rude" is putting it mildly. I've said it before, I'll say it again: Take what you need and leave the rest. The remedies won't work for all of the people all of the time unless we're all the same, and thank goodness we aren't.....thank goodness for angry people like you, Jeanne, who help me realize that I'm in a pretty good space these days!!

I didn't measure properly and pretty sure I added too much salt - i felt the need and drank another liter of water soon after. Next time I will get the spoon out - and I WILL use this cleanse again. I can continue with the fast now with a clearer mind (and bowel). Hopefully I'll make it the full 10 days, feel good so far. DO stay close to the bathroom."

While on this transition I decided I wanted an, and tried to find a simpler more cost effective way to do it. I came across a website for a salt water flush. I add 2 teaspoons of un-iodized sea salt to 1 quart of warm water (you can add a little lemon juice to mask the taste) and immediately drank the whole quart. Not to much longer after I finished the quart of water, I was headed to the bathroom. It cleansed me out thoroughly. I don't want to get graphic, but it did the job so good, it was scary. So if you need a good cleanse try it. I would like to advise you that If you have high blood pressure and cannot use salt, talk with your doctor before doing it, but It worked GREAT!"

You were not meant to have a bowel movement while sitting down on a toilet. We were meant to have one while squatting. WATER

2 YEA

[YEA]  07/21/2009: Nat from Brooklyn, NY writes: "Constipation Relief

5 Glasses of plain water in the morning for constipation relief

Previously, I had mentioned 600 mg of Magnesium Citrate together with 1 - 2 tablespoons Erythritol (___ ___or other) or Xylitol in one or two glasses of water for constipation relief. (Both Erythritol and Xylitol are natural based sweeteners which can be found in a health food store. Erythritol may be the better choice for some. The Erythritol in water also helps relieve bladder retention.)

Recently I read about high dosage vitamin C in Ascorbate form for many illnesses and infections (better than Ester C). Since Sodium Ascorbate is the form of Vitamin C used in intravenous drips, I thought it might be a preferred form and wanted to try it. (It can be easily made by mixing two parts plain Vitamin C - Ascorbic Acid powder and one part baking soda. The store, however, only had Calcium Ascorbate powder.

Meanwhile a family member read in a Hebrew newspaper about 5 (not less) glasses of plain water on an empty stomach in the morning for relief of constipation.

Anyway, the day after taking Magnesium Citrate and Erythritol with water, and about 6-8 grams of Calcium Ascorbate, a family member also drank the 5 glasses of plain water in the morning.

Maybe it was the combination of all these things, or maybe 2 of the three things were the most important. Anyway, with help from Above, whatever it was, gave significant relief more than whatever was tried before."

11/30/2009: Nat from Brooklyn, Ny, Usa replies: "Update to five glasses water in the morning.

Five glasses might be too much to drink every morning. If it is too much, one can try drinking it just a few times a week over a period of an hour or so. One can also drink immediately in the morning (if not every day then several times a week), within about forty minutes, around three glasses of water with magnesium citrate or magnesium oxide (two or three 200 ml tablets).

Bran, flax seeds and brown sesame seeds should also be added to the water - around a teaspoon to a tablespoon of each. (The bran, flax, and sesame seeds might be left to soak overnight in a little water and then added to the full glasses of water.)

A bit of salt or herbal salt mixture can also be added (example, Trocomare - a Swiss herb salt).

Also, one or two drops of ginger essential oil and some ginger powder can be added (one can also try spearmint or some other essential oil that helps digestion).

Also, a teaspoon or a tablespoon of dark molasses.

The water could be either cold or hot. Hot might be better but may not be as quickly accessible immediately in he morning.

One can also take some magnesium citrate/oxide and the fiber mixture the night before with a smaller amount of water and the rest in the morning with the three or more glasses of water mentioned before.

Hot watery drinks sipped after meals and taken throughout the day also help intestinal mobility.

A friend related that Weight Watchers recommended drinking a glass (one can drink two) of hot water followed by a glass of cold water, in the morning. He recommends this suggestion together with exercising with a weighted hoop for ten to twenty minutes after drinking the hot and cold water.

At "home-remedies-for-you" I read a contribution by someone named Nashira. He/she wrote that the following homemade flax crackers help for even extremely stubborn situations.

Take equal amount of flax seeds (uses golden flax seeds) and water and soak overnight. Then mix with crushed garlic, ginger, soy sauce (uses Nama Shoyu), and fresh lemon juice. Spread the mixture onto a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper and dry on low heat in the oven or dehydrator until crunchy.

Skipping food, "morning bread" or "dawn bread", in the morning slows down intestinal motility.

One should be careful not to omit "morning bread" or "dawn bread", that is, eating some light fiber food containing carbohydrate (natural starch or sugar) and protein shortly after one awakens and close to dawn or sunrise. The Talmud gives this advice and states that "morning/dawn bread" nourishes the liver and heals many illnesses."

WATER AND CARROTS

1 YEA

[YEA]  03/05/2009: Shelley from Mississauga, Canada writes: "re: Water and Carots first thing in the morning.

Hello, constipation is not fun and there are many natural cures that work. I wanted to add another natural remedy because it works and its so simple. 1) Water; the body needs water. Usually when people wake up, they have coffee or some type of diuretic [caffine], which is horrible if you have constipation. Drinking 1 glass of water as soon as you wake up is what our body yearns for. Drinking 1 glass of water (at room temperature)in the morning cured my constipation within 1 week. Of coure during the day, you should drink more water, but first thing in the morning is the crutial step. 2) Carrots; not only are carrots delicious, they save our eyesight, protect our hearts, combats cancer, promotes weight loss, AND PREVENTS CONSTIPATION. I do not have constipation anymore, I hope this can help someone else. God Bless."
