Constipation is a common digestive system problem in which one experiences infrequent bowel movements, hard stools, or straining during bowel movements. Because frequency of bowel movements varies from person to person, what may be normal for one person may constitute constipation for another. The general rule of thumb is that if you are passing hard and dry stools less than three times a week, you probably have constipation. Almost everyone experiences constipation at one point or another during their lives. A poor diet is typically the cause of constipation, and most of the time constipation is temporary!

[YEA] 12/06/2006: Lydia from Miami, FL: "I have been constipated for the past thirteen years due to meds and my years of suffering from anorexia and especially bulimia. I only eat healthy food and I HAVE tried everthing and wasted a lot of money to help my situation between doctors' visits, medicines and supplements. Lately the thing that is proving to be helpful is acidophilus (in the millions), All brand fiber cereal (I find it delicious) and magnesium (750mg/day) I have accepted mine as a hopeless case; however, this may help somebody out there!"Replies
06/28/2009: Mia from Crossville, Tennessee replies: "i have been suffering from chronic constipation for as long as i can remember. i have taken every kind of laxative and stool softener out on the market. i have used emema's and suppositories just to help it along. i have been doing this for years until i came across this web site. so i went to my local ___store and got some magnesium oxide in 400mg tablets. i took 1 of a morning on a empty stomach with a large glass of water and 1 of a evening before going to bed. the next day i had a very small bowl movement so i up the dosage to 2 tablets of a morning and 2 of an evening and have had a bowl movement every morning. i have been taking it for 2 weeks now and haven't felt this great in a long time. that weighted down feeling is gone and i have more energy."
08/16/2009: Nooree from Miami, Florida replies: "Hi Lydia! I have been on essential oils for a month now, one in the morning and one at night when I go to sleep. I drink two glases of water early in the morning after brushing my teeth. And take a cup of tea. In between I take 1 tablespoon of coconut oil for my hyperthyroid and as soon as I finish my cup of tea I will have an urge to go. No more constipation or even diarrhea. It will take a month or two to adjust and the fish oil should have all 3 Omegas in it ( Omega 3, Omega 6 and Omega 9 from essential oils) The one I bought has salmon oil. flax seed oil and canola oil in it. It is not only fish oil. In winter I will change it to codliver oil. I am also suger free, dairy free, and white bread free for three and a half months so may be suger is a culprit for stomach problems for me. Since I quit suger I have no more Migrains, My eyes are better ( no more burning) My skin is alot better ( brown marks on my arms are fading away), I do not have dry skin and my nails got smmother. I am sure there are alot more good things happened internally. I am blessed since I came in Contact with Earth Clinic.
I am also getting rid of my candida which was a problem for ten years ( I didn't know) Now that I am getting the "DIE OFF SYMPTOMS" I realize I had it. The coconut oil is taking care of that with rotating dose of Oregano oil, garlic and borax (2 to 3 days each then I change.) I am trying to find Iodine but I couldn't find it here in Miami. Now I will order it online because I see alot of sites that have it. Then I will take a drop of Lugal's Iodine in my water every day. That will kill the bacteria or fungus if I have any at the time but it will help with my Fatigue and thyroid problems. I hope this helps."
08/29/2012: Sasha from Savanna-la-mar, Westmoreland replies: "Hello, I have been suffering from constipation for quite some time and I am also very underweight. However lately I found out I had Celiac Disease. My small intestine is damaged from years of ingesting gluten and I just found out. The happy thing though is the fact that I now know the cause of my illness. I am going to see an herbalist to help with healing my intestine. Forget about the regular doctors. They are only trained to sell medications and do surgeries, eventually also being a sales rep for the funeral homes."
[YEA] 09/03/2012: John from Boston, Ma replies: "Sasha, You have the right approach. You will want to take a good pro-biotic. Look for one with a broad spectum of strains (8 or more)and active cultures in the Billions (15B or more). You may have to adjust it up or down according to bowel tolerance.
The cheaper ones are under 5 billion and have fewer strains.
You should also look in to a good pre-biotic which is food for the good bacteria to thrive. Some common ones include FOS and inulin. You can also get pre-biotics from eating onions, leaks, garlic, and bannanas.
An herbalist may also give you some herbs to soothe the digetive tract like marshmellow tea and anti inflamatories like ginger tea.
It will be a good idea to take digestive bitters 15-30 minutes before eating. These are herbs that help stimulate the digestive juices to make sure you are digesting well. Another alternative is to take digestive enzymes and Betaine (HCL) if you need it.
I just want to correct an earlier poster who said she takes coconut oil for hyerthyroidism. I believe she means "hypothyroidism". Coconut oil tends to speed up the thyroid , not slow it down thus making it good for hypothyroidism."
[YEA] 11/27/2008: Susan from Atlanta, Georgia, USA: "For constipation, I use an acupressure point in the arm. The point is found when you bend the arm - for example, place your right hand on your left shoulder. At the bend of the elbow, use your left hand to locate the acupressure point about halfway between the crease of the bend and the bone. Massage that point for about 15 seconds, then switch to the other arm. Back and forth. I also do this while standing. Usually works within 10 to 15 minutes at most. Also, I have cut out wheat and all gluten grains. I did not think I had a gluten problem but found out that I have that sensitivity."Replies
03/12/2013: Lee from Durban, South Africa replies: "Hi! Could you please explain a bit more clearly where this acupressure point on the arm is?"
10/04/2013: Stan from Las Vegas, Nv replies: "I found the accupressure spot you're looking for. When you put your right hand on your left shoulder, use your left hand and there's a hollow spot just above your right elbow. You'll know when you've found it because there's a sharp pain if you do have a constipation problem."
[YEA] 04/24/2006: Lisa from West Plains MO: "I tried Donna's suggestion on acupressure and it works!!! I rub not only my stomach but where my colon is. Also I found taking 2 tbsp. of molasses morning and night followed by acv in tea and then the acupressure works every time for me. I don't have to sit on the crapper for 15 minutes anymore."Replies
[YEA] 10/05/2011: Angela from Bloomfield,, New Jersey replies: "I have suffered from constipation in a very bad way for a very long time. I don't know what this exercise is called but a friend of mine recently told me to kneel down then sit on the back of my legs as though I was sitting on a chair and wait for the sensation that I want to go comes. It works like a charm. The first few times took about 15 minutes. After that, it happened in about 5 minutes. Works every time. If the floor is too hard, sit on the bed or sofa. Can't wait to hear your experiences."
10/06/2011: Sonia from Hamilton, Bermuda replies: "Angela, do you mean that one should sit on their calves and ankles until the sensation to go hits?"
[YEA] Donna from Aspen, CO: "Every morning, before you get out of bed -- rub your tummy with your fist, not too hard, gently, but make an impression, only for about 10 seconds. It may take two mornings of rubbing, but you'll never be constipated again."Replies

11/03/2009: Boomer from Edmonton, Ab replies: "Make sure if you rub your stomache that you do it in a clockwise motion. Rubbing counter clockwise can result in increased constipation and can cause problems with your intestines."
ACV, Baking Soda, Garlic
[YEA] 05/16/2007: Wanda from East Bay, CA: "Have had some digestive challenges lately. Last night, used ACV in water just prior to a bowl of oatmeal. About an hour later, I swallowed a garlic capsule. This morning after swishing peanut oil for about 20 minutes, I drank the juice of one lemon mixed with about a TBSP of baking powder and water. My nose began to run. After a breakfast of French Toast, bacon, and strong coffee, there was an almost immediate cleansing. I'm not sure which concoction did the job, or if it was the harmonious work of them all. Anyway, just wanted to say thanks and kudos for the good advice. I feel blessed."Replies
12/13/2010: Jan from East, Va replies: "Coffee is well known to cause a bowel movement. Chances are, that did it or at least greatly contributed to it."
03/12/2013: Lee from Durban, South Africa replies: "I find that caffeine works best for my constipation. It's not the healthiest option, so I'm looking for some as effective, but healthier."
03/12/2013: Anon from Anon replies: "Hi, yes coffee works great but so does a teaspoon of ascorbic acid with baking soda added (tip of spoon)."
[BETTER BUT WITH SIDE EFFECTS] 06/19/2013: Elaine from Edmond, Ok replies: "I have been drinking ACV and baking soda for the last two days for high blood pressure. I normally feel like a cement factory has moved in my bowel. But, this morning I had diarrhea. I'll cut back on the dosage. I was just pouring the ACB and BS haphazardly. Tonight I'll measure it. Two tablespoons ACV and one teaspoon BS."
Apple Cider Vinegar Cure for Constipation
Home Remedy Ingredients
- Apple Cider Vinegar - 1 Teaspoon
- Filtered Water - 8 to 10 Ounces
The apple cider vinegar (ACV) tonic can help relieve constipation. Start with one teaspoon apple cider vinegar and an equal amount of honey in a tall glass of water. Later on, slowly increase the amount of vinegar to as much as 2 tablespoons per glass according to your body’s needs and reaction to the treatment. Take this tonic 2-3 times daily with your meals.
[YEA] 01/12/2013: Janine from Cerritos, California, USA: "I rarely see anything mentioned about diet when it comes to constipation. Believe me, if you're having problems and you don't factor in what you're eating, you are making a mistake. If you are really backed up, natural methods take time to act and even then - if you're a difficult case you may have to bring out the big guns (senna, etc. ) to resolve the problem in the meantime. Your body wants to be on a schedule. In brief, no matter how you resolve the problem stick with a program. Avoid dairy (until resolved), eat at least three meals a day, use sprouted grain bread, some raw and cooked (lightly) vegetables, healthy fats, probiotics (natural or supplement), enzymes (natural and/or supplements), water, exercise regularly, sleep 8 hours, meditate. To avoid laxatives look for natural solutions like flax seed and chia seed. I use Kombucha and ACV in my diet but usually not both in the same day. Natural methods will work but only if you pay attention to the big picture. You could be taking enzymes, probiotics, ACV and still be constipated if you're diet is low in fiber and fat. Don't be afraid of protein but don't overload. Grass fed beef, milk and cheese is much lower in saturated fat than what we've typically been using and raw milk and cheese are friendlier for the gut. Too much of the non raw variety of milk will cause constipation. Do your homework."
[NAY] 02/21/2010: Donna from Southern, Ohio: "I have suffered with a spastic colon which the doctors are now calling IBS since I was in high school, over 20 years ago! I continue to have problems with my bowels and in a bad week will go for days without any eliminations. I do drink organic ACV daily in fruit juices. Unfortunately, ACV does nothing for the constipation, bloating, or stomach pain associated with IBS. I have been drinking about a tablespoon or so at least twice a day (or more) for over a month now and can tell no difference what so ever so I guess I have to give ACV a Nay when it comes to alleviating constipation."
[YEA] 06/10/2009: Noor from Lawrenceville, Ga: "HI I just wanted to let people knw my story, I have been on a low carb diet wihich also known as protein sparing modified fast its very stricted in food u intake, awesome diet however the only problem is u don`t have bowel movements for days, a friend of mine told me she been taking apple cider vinegar ever since she had her last kid, and ask me to give it a try, so i did 2 tablespoon daily pure just like that no water no sweetener its just easier this way comparing in adding whole lot of water and honey...which tend to make it harder to drink. And belived or not i have bowel movements every single day, and its just 2 tablespoon a day and drink lots of water itself the whole day, i feel great more than ever, i highly recommend that to any body that suffer bowel movements, plz go buy yourself a good ACV unfiltered u will see diference in you."Replies
04/22/2011: Joe from Toronto, Ontario replies: "when do you take Apple Cider Vinegar and on empty stomach? thanks"
[YEA] 01/01/2009: Carol from Washington, DC, USA: "I have suffered from ulcerative colitis and constipation for years. My medications (for other health problems) seemed to be making the constipation worse. I eat lots of fiber, drink plenty of water & exercise regularly, but the constipation did not go away. I found this site & decided to try ACV. I took 2 teaspoons last night with water and then 2 tsp. this morning followed by water & it worked perfectly! I was amazed that I achieved these results so quickly. I actually had a normal bowel movement. I feel great! I will definitely keep taking ACV. Thanks!"Replies
[YEA] 04/22/2009: Daniel from Blackwood, NJ replies: "I have a theory on why Apple cider vinegar seems to help with constipation and IBS for some people and not for others. I'm actually surprised this ailment isn't on the site, its called SIBO (Small Intestinal Bacteria Overgrowth) and its been linked to many (but not all) cases of IBS. Since the vinegar is antibacterial when one takes this it tends to lower the bacterial load of the small intestines allowing someone with IBS or SIBO to find relief because the overgrowth of the bacteria is stopped, much like a prescription of antibiotics that does the same thing without the fairly large price tag. I think the problem a lot of people are running into is when they take too much of it and it kills too many of the bacteria that help you digest your food. There is, Personally when I take a shot of the stuff after a few days it causes me constipation because its not diluted enough and it most likely gets dumped into my intestines as soon as I drink it due to the irritation of the pyloric valve much like a shot of vodka or equally irritating substance. But when I take only a teaspoon or two in 12 or more oz of water my bowel movements are great. So if any of you are having a problem with constipation please give ACV another chance just use much less (a tsp or two at most )and dilute it in water or your liquid of choice you will probably have a much better time with it. Also if your worried about the enamel on your teeth please use a straw."
[BETTER BUT NOT CURED] 05/22/2009: Mrs P. from Kuching, Malaysia replies: "I am taking diluted ACV 1 teaspoon in 8oz upon rising from bed in the AM and have another one before dinner. I have been taking this for 1 week. I only get little BM daily. I wonder if there is anything I can do to increase the effectiveness. I am so envy reading other's pleasant experiences with ACV. I really hope ACV is the final solution to my serious constipation since it has a lot of other health benefits. Any suggestion? I am thinking of taking a larger dosage."
[YEA] 05/28/2009: Eddi from Houston, Texas USA replies: "Hi everyone, ACV does work and it has helped me in various situations. I mix one teaspoon of apple cider vinegar in honey and I take one or two teaspoonfuls before or after meal once or twice a day. It clears my sore throat, soothes my tummy aches, made me lose weight, opened my sinuses during cold. Please do not overtake acv. Be moderate. I've been constipated and I've had two difficult b-movements ending in harsh stool and slight bleeding due to stretching of tissue. When I eat pumpkin pitas, I go next morning and stool is softened. Pumpkin is good, but not too much bread. Pumpkin pitas are found at Spanish and Mexican bakeries. It's a great snack and heals prostate problems, bladder, low in calories, high in betas, rich in potassium. It's no wonder, I always feel good after I eat pumpkin pitas. God bless and take care.:)"
10/23/2009: Starfish from Crystal, Usa replies: "I was diagnosed with SIBO about a year ago. Years of being ill and not knowing why ends up is due to this overgrowth. I have tried everything from way too many harsh antibiotics to the ACV. I now stick with enzymes and probiotics but still have bad days. I was told I would probably have this the rest of my life. I am willing to try ACV again. How much should I be taking everyday. Should I take with or without water?? any suggestions"
09/29/2011: Anne from London, Uk replies: "Thanks for mentioning the ACV issue/constipation. I will certainly add more water to my ACV/baking soda concoction. I hope to see a difference in a few days."
10/26/2011: Tomp from Athens, Alabama replies: "-Just a thought for us new to the site... I didn't know ACV stood for AppleCiderVineger and don't make the same mistake I did. I mistook TSP="tablespoon" wrong! It really means "tea" spoon. I know your all laughing but was like a shot of vodka!
Thanks for great info."
03/05/2013: Cc from Atlanta, Ga replies: "Do the same thing but do it with WARM water. I boiled it then let it cool. Worked in an hour. And I did no honey and a eyeball shot of a tablespoon. The digestive system works better with warm liquids... Never cold."
08/11/2013: Kt from Usa replies: "I believe there is one exception...1/2 tsp dry mustard & 1/2 cup of cool water first thing in the morning on an empty stomach."
[YEA] 12/17/2008: Caitlin from Austin, TX: "Hi! I've found that if you drink your ACV first thing in the morning with ICE-WATER you will go to the bathroom within 20 minutes. My grandmother who was a mid-wife/healer back in the 20's always recommended a large icy, cold glass of water every morning to stay regular. She recommended a dash of lemon but I've found that a tablespoon of ACV more cleansing and better for my skin. I always, however, use a straw with ACV or lemon because of the acid on the teeth. I like the big, round ones that burger joints have sitting around. Before I forget, I did lose 3 pounds initially with the ACV but have found that I lose more when I eat right and exercise at least 20 minutes every other day. Initially the ACV made my pants fall off as it targeted my excess stomach area, but I'm stable now. I believe the ACV only goes so far; the rest is pushing away from those extra helpings, lots of water to get rid of toxins and stay regular, and at least 20 minutes of exercise (daily preferably). My grandmother lived to be 94. She walked and regularly caught the bus everywhere; she even danced a lot (what she called dancing anyway) till she was 89 and moved near a burger and chicken joint. Frequently eating at those places, which she never did on any kind of regular basis, brought 50lbs of weight gain on her tiny frame, diabetes and sight problems and, she eventually lost her legs at 92 to diabetes. This is the legacy of the fast food and sugar industry; we lose the great ones to their unhealthy slop! As you can tell I miss her and her ageless wisdom."Replies
01/30/2009: Leta from Bolton, NC replies: "I agree with you Caitlin. My grandmother was really into healthy eating and used a lot of wheat germ, flax seed and vinegar to stay healthy. She passed away 2 years ago at the age of 90 and was never sick. She was so wise and instilled in me the importance of healthy eating and the use of home remedies. I too miss her. I have struggled with my weight for many years but for several months I have been retraining myself on how to eat and utilizing a lot of what she taught me.
And the fast food stores... Oh My Gosh... I can not understand, in this day and age when more and more people are becoming more health conscience, why the fast food industry is not incorporating things like Turkey burgers, baked fries, grilled salmon, etc... I think I will start a Health Fast Food industry because isn't that one of the problems anyway with eating healthy -planning, inconvience, taste, etc?
I have incorporated flax seed in my breakfast or at least one meal a day, eating more fish, baked foods, and I personally like oatmeal. I add a little sea salt and a touch of smart balance light with omega for taste. I hate to seem like I am babbling on but these small changes in my life are helping me to lose weight and maybe it can help someone else. I also drink vinegar with a touch of baking soda to help with allergies. Hope this helps someone!"
05/26/2009: Caitlin from Austin, tx replies: "I spoke with a naturalopathic doctor who said that ACV is great in limited amounts. Said that when you take too much, the stomach stops producing its own acid; it regulates itself to the acv and may produce smaller amounts which may account for constipation. I have personally found that drinking a lot more water can regulate my bowels more than anything else. Water is the key. I met a lady who said she drank about 2 gallons of water a day and lost 50 lbs she was carrying, mostly around her stomach. That's all she did. When I saw her later in the year she said her doctor told her to cut down on the water as it was flushing her nutrients out as well which was making her feel extremely tired. Cutting back to a gallon a day worked for her."
[YEA] 10/06/2008: newnelly from 44065, ohio: "I tried apple cidar vinegar (1 tbs) straight chased by water. Wow! It immediately had me running to the bathroom. I know it says to take it in water and sip it all day long, but if you feel brave and feel the need to purge, this is the way to go. Warning! It burns a bit, but I think that is because it is working and cleansing the insides."
[NAY] 10/02/2008: Madhur from Jackson Hole, Wyoming: "Taking ACV has made me constipated - contrary to other people's joyous feedback that it has cured this very ailment. I took note of one other person, Robin, who has had the same effect. ACV, generally, has been very beneficial for me except promoting constipation.
Can anyone finally answer this question? Thanks, M."
[NAY] 10/03/2008: Lauren from Keego Harbor, Michigan United States replies: "Nay! Thank God I am not the only one that has expeienced the Constipation effect with the ACV and Baking soda remedy. I love ACV for everything else but it caused constipation with me. I started taking 2 TBlsp ACV w/ 1/4 tsp. BSoda for acid reflux/ulcer/digestion issues. It helps for that problem but is making me constipated. Anyone know why this ACV/Bsoda combo does this for some people?"
04/30/2011: Beatrice from Ottawa, Ontario replies: "I fear the ACV also causing me constipation. I just started taking it yesterday and like you said, it works miracles for the acid reflux (especially at night when antiacids just don't work), but I also havn't had a bowel movement since then. It could also be the fact that I was also taking tums for the reflux, which I hear can cause constipation. I worry that this will make digestion more difficult, along with making the reflux worst. I was also wondering if drinking ACV can worsen Hyperkalimia (too much potassium in the blood). Feedback would be greatly appreciated!"
[NAY] 03/23/2012: Margaret from Greensboro, Nc replies: "Those of you who suffer from constipation from ACV may have the same condition I do. I have IBS caused by intolerance to fruit sugars. ( and also grains, MSG and ALL vinegars) Most people can eat dried fruit ( prunes) and have a bowel movement. For me dried fruit is like POISON because the fruit sugars are concentrated. I suspect ACV is the same way. The fructose has been concentrated & altered by aging, but its still in there, and you are highly sensitive to it. Also, the aging produces naturally occurring MSG. I have also discovered that with IBS-C, you have a sensitivity to a food product, and your colon spasms and stops in one place, so you keep taking the fluids out of your stool until its like a rock. Beware of people who tell you to eat wheat bran and fruit. It will make it WORSE. Eat a high protein diet and watch out for ALL MSG- anything that is autolyzed or hydrolyzed on the label is MSG."
[YEA] 07/26/2008: Bridget from Philadelphia, Pa: "I'm not even sure where to start. Today is my 6th day taking ACV (_____s organic). I'm taking 2 tsp along with 1 tsp pure natural honey mixed in apx 2 ounces of water, 3x a day ( before each meal.) Apx 2 years ago I developed a white mole directly under my eye, hated it and always planned on finding out about getting it removed. On day 4 of taking the ACV, I had gotten out of the pool and was rubbing my eye and noticed I couldn't feel the mole. I went to the mirror to look and could barely see it. Today is day 6 and it's almost gone! I have another dark mole on my arm that is also changing!
Another HUGE change this week are my bowel movements. I am hypothyroid, and normally when I'm eating healthy items such as alot of fruits and veggies, I tend to have a hard time producing a movement, but this week I have been producing at least once, sometimes twice a day, and they are very large healthy movements. I have also lost 4+ lbs which of course I also attribute to eatting better and drinking alot of water. I tend to go on these health kicks alot, for long periods of time, but this is my first time trying the ACV and I have been telling everyone about my dissapearing mole and my movements for 2 days now. I cant wait to wake up each day and see what else is going to change! Loving it, and I will keep yous updated! Thanks, Mom in Phila"
[YEA] 09/29/2007: JM from Cebu, Philippines: "I have been suffering from constipation and dyspepsia for years and am "used to it". I tried all sort of "fiber" products including all kinds of oatmeal, yogurt etc. some works only when u take it and when u stop ..back to heavy feeling again. When i started taking ACV (i took it for a mistaken lymph node but its actually a boil) i feel lighter, constipation is gone every after meal....and i lost 2lbs for a week..it's really a MIRACLE...lots of benefits...I can't stop thanking this website..more power.."
[YEA] 09/04/2007: Jessica from Lady's Island, SC: "I have been suffering from cystic breakouts and chronic constipation most of my adult life. These issues seem to only have intensified with age. Mind you, I eat an organic, almost-vegetarian diet and am always sure to get my minimum fiber intake. Before ACV, I was lucky if I had a bowel movement every other day and always felt "backed up" and suffered from terrible gas! My face would suddenly erupt in cystic acne lesions that took weeks to heal. After spending literally thousands of dollars on products in an attempt to rid myself of both conditions, I am now able to throw out more than half of the things in my medicine cabinet. I take 2 tbs. ACV morning and night, straight-- I don't even mind the taste. I also apply it topically to my face every morn-- seems to brighten my complexion and tone my pores. If you have sensitive skin, you might want to consider dilluting it, as it is pretty strong. My skin has never been better and I am completely "regular" now-I only wish I had tried this sooner and imagine the years of suffering I could have saved myself. If something ails you, try it-- it certainly can't hurt!"
