Hi. This is actually to all the folk leaving out the % of LI they are using. I feel a bit frustrated that many posts give remedies and methods for using Lugols Iodine, but fail to give the % they are using in their well meaning post...this little detail is important and, when left out, makes their remedy almost useless to other folks. Thank you

EC: This particular post from 2009 used colorless iodine, which is not Lugol's iodine. See example here. It shouldn't have been posted on the Lugol's page, unfortunately.

Why not take the ionic form of iodine.

You put some drops in some water and drink it on an empty stomach.

It is absorbed into the thyroid within 10 minutes.

Lugols seems antiquated

Maybe betadine isn't good enough (and since it's a Brand name from Big Harma, it isn't pure). You need a quality Iodine like Lugol's or something. And 75% of what you put on your skin ends up absorbed into your body, so that part can't be ignored. Don't give up so easily. Be well.

Hi Melissa....

When our Chihauhua had Cushings and massive skin issues.....I used "betadine solution" 10% Providone-Iodine solution / topical solution iodine on his skin. From what I remember reading at the time, it was considered safe. This would be transdermal, and maybe a good way to go, depending on what your dogs health challenges are.

Ours was a couple of years ago, so you may want to research it on your own. The iodine was sold at a local store with a pharmacy For about ten dollars I believe. Good Luck!

Hi Bess, I had seen this table but not certain if the product I bought was 15% or 5% iodine. It was advertised as a 15%, but I now assume that the % only relate to the iodine part. This would mean that I have a 5% solution. Is that correct? Thanks and blessings.

Lugol's and Irradiation
Posted by A (Southern, Ca) on 03/29/2013

Just received a Lugol's solution in the mail, through Amazon. I don't know if it traveled via airplane at some point, but it just struck me that there's lots of radiation up in the atmosphere now. Not to mention that many things do get irradiated through the mail as a standard procedure anyways.

Does anyone know whether the iodine particles in the solution can turn into a radionuclide form because of this? Can the irradiation make it harmful rather than medicinal?

I know that at least Iodine 131 has a relatively short half-life. So if this were the case, that the tincture may have become radioactive, maybe just wait so many days before using it?

Sorry if this topic was already covered - I don't have time to search the whole site. Take care

@ Asktodaboutrealestate: Your weight gain could be the displaced toxins being stored in your body until it has time to process them. It sounds like you increased your Iodine dose too quickly but more importantly, you were probably not taking the companion supplements that aid the body with this detox (Selenium, Magnesium, Unrefined Celtic salt, Vitamin C, Vitamin B2/3. Since your kidneys and other organs could not keep up with the toxins being displaced by the Iodine, it stored those in body fat hence the weight gain from the bloat. This is just a theory I have heard about and feel is potentially true. For anyone who wants to try Iodine supplements, I suggest you research thoroughly before you begin.

Posted by Connie (Manitowoc, Wisconsin, USA) on 09/06/2009

Is this like Lugol's?

At the local grocery store, I stumbled on two little bottle of "Iodine Tincture USP" and I'm wondering if this is like Lugol's. Under active ingredients it says, "Iodine tincture U.S.P. 100% (2% iodine)...... First aid antiseptic. It doesn't say what else is in it, no secret peel-back label, and the product's website was minimal and unhelpful. Naturally the bottle declares it for external use only, with a cute little red scull and crossbones on the front of the label. Is the USP 100% some kind of standard wherein it would be possible to ascertain any additional unmentioned ingredients?

This is one of those mysterious happenings, actually. I was wandering through town aimlessly, and figured I'd wander through the grocery store. I was feeling very aimless. Looking through the shelves of pharmacy offerings I began looking for items Ted had mentioned. Potassium Citrate contained sucrolose..... I perused the shelves for several minutes. Then, stashed behind some hanging items were two little bottle of iodine, similar to the kind I'd been meaning to buy online. I failed to find the price on the shelves, as well as any additional bottles. The clerk scanned them at about $3 each. I felt less aimless. Went home.

EC: Don't think so...

According to this website: http://www.sciencelab.com/page/S/PVAR/10416/SLI1597

Assay for Iodine (I) 1.8-2.2 g/100 ml
Assay for Sodium Iodide (NaI) 2.1-2.6 g/100 ml

EC - would it be a good idea to put an alert or 'Important! ' message at the top of the Iodine section to not confuse the two and to not take Iodine tincture internally?

I have Lugol's and just need to learn how to appropriately use it. To answer my prev. post about how much is needed, I am finding out it is dependent on a lot of things including gender, past medication history, and prior exposure to flouride and bromine. I found from watching the YouTube videos that we need almost 100 times more than is put in a single "serving" of iodine (USA)! Wow...

Remember that minerals or supplements and treatments can be either a food or a poison. Food at the correct dose and a poison if too concentrated. If you analyze your hair the minerals are measured in parts per million. So very weak solutions of iodine regularly are better, not enough to discolour but enough for the skin to absorb. This also solves the problem of finding discoloured iodine. The same applies to anything that may burn, if it burns you are using far too much and causing damage instead of causing healing.

Hi Sue!

Iodine is not expected to disrupt the menstrual cycle or cause hot flushes from what I have read, although it can change hormone levels.

Are you 40 to 50 years of age? You may be experiencing the beginning of menopause.

There are herbs which encourage menstruation, herbs which delay it, and herbs which balance the hormones. You might consider using vitex/chasteberry in addition to the iodine to balance the hormones while the iodine does its work.

If it is indeed menopause you may consider black cohosh, maca, and sage leaf to relieve the discomforts.

You may also consider taking kelp rather than Lugol's iodine, as kelp offers additional nutrients your body may be in need of, as well as iodine.

I buy Lugols regularly in Australia I have purchased it in Canberra and Adelaide. To succeed you must find a compounding chemist. Read the label carefully, mine is named Aqueous Iodine Solution APF. It contains Iodine 5%w/v and Potassium Iodide 10% w.v. In all cases I have purchased it the chemist has not made it, the brand is "David Craig Galenicals". When you actually get to talk to a pharmacist they will know what you are looking for. I have never found a helpful chemist who will direct you to another chemist who sells it. When asked why you want it the safest approach (which was true in my case) was to say that the doctor says my thyroid is a little low. When asked do you know how to take it it is 16 drops per day for 2 months and then 2 drops a day as a maintenance dose. Everyone is happy and then use it as you like. It must have both types of iodine to be Lugols solution and it is fantastic stuff.

Lugol's Iodine Side Effects
Posted by Bill (San Fernando, Philippines) on 04/03/2013

Hi Jr... It is certainly possible to get excess iodine symptoms as a metallic taste in the mouth, although my own suspicions are that this problem, when supplementing iodine, may well be caused by the excess bromine in your body being displaced from cells into the blood by the iodine. Excess bromine from the tissues is difficult to remove from the body and this can also cause a metallic taste in the mouth. See this article here on Bromism.

I myself have taken 16 drops a day of 5% lugol's iodine iodine for an extended period and have never had any metallic taste or any other symptoms arise. But I come from a country where bromine is not added to the bread -- but in America, bromine is always added to bread during baking. And whenever you supplement lugol's iodine, you must always ensure that you take the full Iodine Protocol shown here to avoid problems caused by a poor diet (low anti-oxidant, low mineral processed food diet).

If the metallic taste arises from excess bromine in the blood (from supplementing lugols iodine) then you should simply use the simple Sea Salt Protocol as shown in this link to get rid of the excess bromine problem.

Theory of Bromide Dominance.

I finally got a chemist to order me a bottle of lugols iodine ( I hate buying on the internet ). What I've received is Lugols Iodine but even though I specified colorless the only one he could get me is colored. The description on the bottle is " Lugols iodine B.P. - aqueous iodine oral solution - for nutritional supplementation of iodine only - each ml contains 126 mg of iodine derived from iodine and potassium iodide." It then goes on to state that it is for animals only and to paint or spray it on the animals skin and how to orally supplement the animals watering trough as well.

My question is is this the same iodine that people orally supplement with just with an ability to stain?

You need to ask the pharmacist to order it for you - for some reason, they don't keep it in stock. I believe it took about a week from the time I ordered it to the time I received it. I've never heard of anyone talk of 'drinking' Lugol's Iodine. It is added to water (not tap), by the drop - a tiny amount. If it's Lugol's iodine, it will say it on the label; if it only says 'BP' then it's not Lugol's - Lugol's is a recognised process of making and mixing iodine and iodide, not a brand name.

Right after taking the drops yesterday, I had an immediately reaction: runny nose and slight pressure behind the eyes. Today (Monday) my nose is still runny, but the pressure behind my eyes is a bit less. I know the runny nose is from having too much iodine in my body. Should I be worried? How can I pull the excess iodine from my system? I am going to stop the iodine for at least a month now and if I take it in the future, no more than 1-2 drops at a time.

Lugol's Iodine Side Effects

Actually iodine that you are taking are mostly harmless. The eye pressure and headache issue has a lot to do with the problems associated with elemental iodine. Taking about 1000 mg x 4 of vitamin C sodium ascorbate should neutralize most of the problems.

If not, eat white bread as it is high in bromine. I have taken much more iodine before, but it is in the form of potassium iodide and sodium iodide, closer to 100 mg, not mcg either. The Japanese eats 1000 times above iodine dose and has no effect because the high content of bromine and iodine are found in kelp. A kelp supplement inspite of high iodine, has much higher bromine and can also displace it.

In general no harm but elemental iodine are oxidative in nature and vitamin C sodium ascorbate should lessen that problem. What elemental iodine does to the body is it raises the ORP to be a positive value and the sodium ascobate 1000 mg x 5 will put the ORP to a normal negative values just as before. Drinking plenty of water with a small amount of sea salt will displace the unneeded iodine.

There still seems to be some confusion or disinfo here about the legal availability of original 5% Lugol's Iodine solution in the USA from retailers since August 2007.

One internet retailer has the actual 2007 DEA notice up, which clearly states that it still is legal in USA, after August 1 2007, to buy up to 1 30-ml bottle of original 5% strength Lugol's per person per transaction or shipment (that is,the aqueous 5%/10% mixture of the 2 forms of iodine called Lugol's since the early 1800's):

http://jcrows.com/iodinealert.html
Additionally, the final rule exempts
transactions of up to one-fluid-ounce (30 ml) of Lugol's Solution.
.....................................
Comments Regarding Iodine Products Used for Nutritional Supplementation

Twelve comments expressed concerns that the proposed regulations would adversely impact the availability of products for use as a dietary source of iodine. These comments detailed the use of iodine products as part of a nutritional program to supplement iodine levels for various health purposes (e.g., the normalization of thyroid function, prevention of breast cancer recurrence, or supplementation during pregnancy as a program to prevent autism in offsprings.)

Eleven of these comments expressed concern that the regulation would adversely impact the availability of a specific formulation known as Lugol's Solution. Lugol's Solution is a 5 percent aqueous solution of iodine in combination with 10 percent potassium iodide.
........................................
The maximum strength of Lugol's allowable for purchase in solution amounts over 30 ml in USA is now 2.2%, since August 1 2007.

As of May 2010, I believe this DEA rule is still in effect, otherwise it would have been updated or removed on this retailer's website.

I take it with plenty of warm water and methylselenocystein and 1 hours later or so, I take a few tsp of ascorbic acid, a tsp of magnesium glycinate (it's 86% glycine and 14% magnesium), borax, MSM, silicon/"silica" etc in a big water bottle and the B complex later with food.

Do what suits you best but don't deactivate your iodine with vinegar.

Diluting Lugol's Iodine
Posted by Peter Doubcheck Robinson (England UK) on 05/14/2025

Hi Bill,

Many thanks for your 2022 communication. It appears there could be a typo

in "3 drops of 15% lugol's iodine -- which works out to a total of about 170 mgs of iodine/iodide per day". Let me explain:

Let us note that when Jean Louis Guillaume Lugol made his solution in 1829. His iodine concentration of 5% represents the nominal iodine (molecule I2). He combined I2 with

with 10% Potassium Iodide (molecule KI). As you know, 5% means 5grams of solute (i.e. I2) in a solution that has a volume of 100ml. Therefore 5000mg/100ml or 50mg per milliliter (ml). For KI we have 10 grams in 100ml -> 100 mg/ml; Iodide in KI

takes 76.45% of the molecular weight of KI.

A standard medical drop size is 0.05 milliliters:

3 drops = 3*0.05 = 0.15ml

So the actual total iodine from I2 and KI is:

0.15ml*(50mg/ml + (100*0.7645)mg/ml) = 18.9675 mg let us round it to 19mg.

The above pertains to original Lugol solution

Assuming that your quoted 15% is the nominal concentration

this means the concentration of molecular I2 is 15% (i.e. 150mg/ml) and

and the concentration of KI is 30% (i.e. 300mg/ml).

If we apply the above reasoning of 5% Lugol's iodine to the 15% Lugol's iodine the total iodine corresponding to 3 drops is:

(3×0.05)×(150 +(300× 0.7645)) = 56.9025 mg per dose of 3 drops

To reach the quoted "170 mg of iodine/iodide per day" the patient would be

administered about 170/56.9025 = 2.987... about 3 times

the quoted dose of 3 drops per day!

Even if the "15%" represents 5% I2 and 10% KI, the patient will have to be

administered 170/18.9675 = 9.962... about 9 times the quoted dose of

3 drops per day.

Forgive me if its a typo. in fact in clinical setting, the patient is

usually administered small doses many times per day in order

to reach (accumulated) the target dose per day.

Of course you may be absolutely right if your dispensing dropper has

a vertical drop size of 126.45 ml (i.e. 126.45 milliliters)

Pink Eye, Sinuses

I have been using a home made eye drop solution of MSM, C and DMSO... I wonder if adding some Lugols would be beneficial, or be contraindicated...??

I use for dry eyes (not much help), floaters, ditto, and to avoid macular degeneration...

I would look into hexane free cold pressed castor oil for eye problems. Research it here on earth clinic. I wouldn't put iodine in my eyes.

Lugol's Iodine Side Effects
Posted by Sue (Malaysia ) on 07/02/2020

Started Lugol s iodine a month ago. Started slow with one drop for 1 week plus, right now I am on 3-4 drops daily (5%). I have adenomyosis and read about all the good of iodine. However, ever since started taking iodine, I don't seem to sleep so well, I have few / some hot flushes daily, and most of all I missed my period during month of May.

Would be pleased if anyone with experiences r able to advise.

Thanks.
