For UC, I have used probiotics with co q10, turmeric, and many people are dehydrated and don't realize it so pedialyte ( check with your doctor on amount). And, a vegetarian diet. Our diets are very acidic. Hope this information is helpful. Also, peptobismol has healing properties for stomach and intestinal ulcers. A seven day treatment. Again, check with your family physician. Many doctors are not into natural remedies and just write a prescription that has more side effects than worth taking. A simplistic life style with lowered stress if possible.

Humic Acid
Posted by Mike (Parksville, Bc, Canada) on 12/04/2011

Humic acid in liquid form is the best. The stuff I was taking is called Master Detox. I was taking 2ozs - 4 times per day at one point but now take it 3 times per day. Within 2 days I was feeling better, within 7 days I was seeing very little blood and within 29 days I actually had a somewhat solid BM. However, it has not as yet resolved all of my Diarrhea.

Humic Acid, Cinnamon Oil, Aloe Vera
Posted by Katey (Pinole, California/usa) on 10/10/2011

For Ted: I have been diagnosed with uc/proctitis since June of this year (started to have symptoms since January 2011). I was prescribed asacol and took 12/day until about 1 month ago. My symptoms were reduced but my stool was still quite loose and I started to lose weight slowly because I was not absorbing. My weight loss to date is 44 lbs. And I continue to lose a bit. My hair has recently started to fall out and had some constipation about 2 weeks now. My skin looks fine but I don't have much fat.

I am unable to find humic acid. Any recommendations where I could find this in my area. I am taking 1/8 teaspoon magnesium citrate 1/2 teaspoon baking soda. Also I am not clear on how much cinnamon oil and aloe vera to use. I was so bad yesterday that I tried some jojoba oil and a drop of cinnamon oil; helped and had some relief from the gas in rectum.

Thanks very much.

Aloe and Slippery Elm

I tried this for weeks, but it simply was not making a difference. I was just too sick and finally gave in on getting Prednisone. I know Prednisone is not the answer, but I am hoping if I can get this flare up under control, perhaps then, with some of these natural treatments -- it can stay better. I think I was too far gone to fix things........ couldn't take the pain anymore.

My doctor had advised that I was a candidate for having my colon removed due to the UC - I went to the health food store and told them my problem and they suggested aloe vera juice - the kind that tastes just like water - and slippery elm - I took 2 oz aloe vera water and 1 slippery elm capsule morning and night and the pain and frequency of going to the bathroom was gone in 2 days. I was so grateful that I listened to my instinct and went to the health food store for a more natural solution - I took it regularly for 3 months and I have had no more UC - it's been over 4 years - I hope this will work for you.

Probiotics
Posted by Brad (Mount Pearl, Newfoundland) on 09/11/2011

Just a follow up on this.......... Probiotics did the trick for four years, but I am having a bad flare up. I have been suffering for slightly over five weeks now, of increaed bathroom trips, blood, etc. I have upped my probiotic intake, but no luck.

I am researching the site now to try some potential remedies. I am trying to avoid steroids at all costs. I checked my pH level(based on my saliva) and it look to be in the high 6's -- hard to determine exactly with the strips that I am using. Any suggestions what to try first?

I am leaning towards Baking Soda plus water, just for convenience.

Humic Acid

Have you been tested for celiac's? Your symptoms certainly point in that direction. You should read up on it and see if you think your symptoms match. Just a note, the test for celiac's isn't always totally reliable. Sometimes you have to do an elimination diet and see if it changes your health. Do some research before you see your doctor again. Good luck to you.

Humic Acid
Posted by Morgan (Warner Robins, Georgia) on 08/14/2011

My name is Morgan and I am 23 years old. I have been battling what they believe to be Ulcerative Colitis for over 2 years now. When I say "what they believe" I mean that I have all of the symptoms as someone with UC but all my test results come back negative. I have had 3 colonoscopys and 4 scopes but no answers. My colon walls are inflammed and have been taking asacol three times a day and when it's a bad flare up (blood in stool and diarrehea) then they put me on steriods. Nothing has seemed to work for a long period of time. I have read over the site about natural remedies and was interested in the Humic Acid results. This is all very new to me, I was wondering where I can get it and the dosage?? Thanks!!!

Humic Acid
Posted by Anthony (Philadelphia, Pa) on 08/13/2011

Hello Ted, how are you? I'm a 28 yr old male who has ulcerative colitis/proctitis, skin issues on scalp/face, and high mercury levels(scored a 7, when 2 was normal), and a white tongue that will not go away and always seems like something is in my throat. Well, I have read so much on this site and what you have posted. Thank you for it all. I have followed some with little results. So here goes: I recently recieved humic acid in liquid form and it says to take an ounce a day so I have been splitting it up in 3 doses and taking it that way. Its been about 6 days so far and I feel it's ok however where can I buy the kind of Humic you use? Maybe this isn't as potent? My proctitis has been better the last 2-3 weeks. I use a canasa supposity a day, take 2 grams vit C, vit E, 50 mgs Zinc citrate, and boswelli. I also alkalize using a whole lime and 1/2 tsp baking soda (using this for about 2 weeks). My bowel movements have been fine however sometimes it burns and there are alot of holes in my BM (Sorry, just wanted to explain). Tonight, I just added lugol's iodine to my humic acid (2 drops). Also, I dilute the humic acid with some water when I take it. I gonna try to get the cinnamon oil and aloe vera oil, but I definitely need the humic powder? Should I use another combo with the baking soda instead of the lime? Maybe potassium citrate?

I would like to explain why I'm taking the zinc, vit E, vit C.... I have this condition on my scalp and face where my follicles get clogged with keratin/sebum and then it oxidizes and it's preventing my beard hair from growing in some spots like the root is dead. It gets dry and oily at the same time (like it is compensating), itchy and when I get a haircut there are white little hard balls everywhere (assuming it's keratin/sebum). My hair is so rough and the sebum just wont stop and it's really weird. I do get some cyst, but I feel the zinc has helped with that but only that, not the oily, dry, rough, patches with keratin plugs. And lastly, I do have sinus problems where there is always mucous in my nose.

Thanks for reading and hopefully you can help me out! Take Care!

From reading what you and others have been posting it seems as though you are taking Humic Acid in a liquid state. I was wondering does it make a difference to take it in tablet form? or is Liquid form best for UC? And if liquid form is better, would you be able to recommend a provider of it? I am unable to find it in liquid form. Thanks for all the help and best wishes! Rick

OK so... A little background first before I get into it. As I mentioned in the previous post, I was having bleeding issues. I also had a sensitivity to the brown rice too because of the carbs in it- so here's what I did:

I allowed the rice to soak for a day first (to allow it to sprout and to make sure any enzyme inhibitors/chemicals were dissipated) then rinsed them off and placed them in a blender to turn the rice into rice-flour. Then I ate the flower raw (4x a day), I did not cook it. However, I FULLY chewed (and broke down) the rice as much as I could before swallowing. Our saliva has natural enzymes in it to help break down and thus allow us to better absorb food. Even people (like me) who have carbohydrate sensitivity can avoid alot of grief just from taking the time to do this. To aid me I had a small glass of water that had lemon juice (to increase my saliva output). I drank water with each meal to avoid dehydration.

For awhile I was still bleeding which concerned me. Also, I was getting allot of yellow bile in my stool which I know is not good. If I hadnt felt like I had nothing left to lose I don't think I would have continued as long. Even though this took longer then the prescribed 7 days... It did at last seem to work. I have full stools and no bleeding. Am I cured? I'm going to assume no, however I believe I've put myself in remission. This diet has given me a huge advantage and I just might have a chance to keep this under control now!

This is a HUGE deal folks. People with UC take notice!! I know chances are youve tried alot of things, some of which may have helped to a certain degree (Like Sheldon's Vitamin-E enema). I know your probably weary of all this, have seen more then your share of contradictary information, scammers and all-out B. S. - I know how it is. All I can say is I tried this and it seems like it's working. I really stuck with it even when I was sure it wasn't helping. I'm glad I did that.

As I mentioned in the previous post, there are alot of great qualities to Brown Rice. It just might have the right combination of nutrients and other elements to allow our bodies to heal themselves. Here's a link to scientific study information about Organic Brown Rice, I recommend people take a look:

http://curezone.com/forums/fm.asp?i=839417

I'll come back to post again as a follow up. Not sure when, but probably a long time from now. Good luck to all of us.

I Developed UC symptoms in 2006 and it's been all downhill ever since! But in all seriousness, I like anyone reading this knows either from experience or desperation that medical science just won't help the way it should, which generally leads people to investigate alternitives.

So I'm in the process of doing this as well. What I discovered from searching around is that this is based on an old Macrobiotic Diet, Diet Number 7 I beileve.

The trouble with this diet is, it's got complex-carbs in it which are BAAAADDD for UC sufferers... However... It also has anti-oxidants and prebiotic ellements to it and will help level out your PH levels, which in theory could be very helpful for IBD.

Prebiotics in particular are one thing people with UC can not have too much of. Anyone who recovers from UC, prebiotic foods will likely be the best way to maintain remission simply because it feeds your gut flora.

I can tell you I've been doing it longer then seven days already, but I haven't stopped yet. Has it helped? I'm really not sure. Ive had chronic Copper poisaning due to the high acidic level in our well water, which is causing leaching metals to be strained into my food/drink... So I'm unreliable to ask at this point.

BUT just so you know: Over here it's stated that it might actually make your condition worse:

http://www.tolaymat.com/Diet-English/Macrobiotics/Macro7Diet-E.htm

Over here it's stated that it takes 1 Week to 3 Months to cure IBD (but it doesn't say it's done with this diet):

http://www.tolaymat.com/Diet-English/Illnesses/Diarrhea-E.html

If it improves anything at all... I will be back to post.

Hi Josephus,

Thank you for the encouragement. I have been seeing an easing of symptoms. Today is day 7 and (sorry for the specifics) yesterday held two BMs. Major victory! But somehow I am disappointed that it is not all the way better.

By being completely normal by the seventh day, did you mean consistency of BMs as well as number?

I'm debating whether I will do an extra day or not. If today is at least similar I don't think I will. I am going to do Dom's kefir bit, which I think will be helpful for me since I've always felt this has been a bacterial issue.

Dietary Changes
Posted by Judy (Richmond Hill, Nyc) on 04/11/2011

i agree with you every food does not work the same for everone. I have had colitis for the past 13 years. Have had plenty good times but also bad ones. To the point where I couldnt even eat 3 spoon full of food without running to the bathroom. With me what seems to work the best is very bland foods that dont contain to much condiments, and of course avoid stress. What is weird is that every year I was hospitalized especially in the summer due to this until I had my first baby. After that I had two more kids and never been hospitalized again. I do take medication (asacol)but only when i am in relapse.

Aloe Vera, Turmeric
Posted by Natwell (Cosp, Co) on 03/21/2011

Regarding Turmeric and Aloe Vera for UC:

Bleeding increased for me using turmeric. I did some further checking and found that turmeric is a blood thinner so it can increase bleeding. I am still using aloe vera. Also called the companies for composition information about aloe and found that the only company to get aloe vera from without the "diarrhea factor" is Lily of the Dessert because is tests 40% lower in the laxative ingredient- and you can only use the inner filet juice NOT GEL because the gel has cargeena (sp?) which produces inflammation. So I am using 1 oz. Aloe vera juice 4 x a day and am working up to six, started with 1 oz. 2 times. Bleeding is my worst and biggest problem because it sends me to the hospital and I cannot afford to get more transfusions without the doctors trying to send me to surgery. I ordered the Butyrate enema kit today which builds mucosa lining.

Hi Harsh;

Here's the brown rice diet as I did it.

1) Each morning drink 1 glass of water.

2) Each morning eat (chew well) 2 tablespoons of raw brown rice that has been soaked overnight in water.

3) During the day cook and eat 4 meals, each with 1/4 cup brown rice and 1/2 cup water.

That's it. Eat no other food or beverage.

Do this diet for a minium of 7 days. If you still have colitis symptoms, continue for another 2 or 3 days. At the end, ease back into your regular eating pattern with light meals of fruit and vegetables.

Good luck!!

I just read this on a site about UC; it's true b/c of some sort of harmful chemical that the cigarettes inhibit in your colon. But it's not the best way due to the even greater harm in smoking. I have been dealing with mine by using turmeric, coconut oil and aloe vera juice. Aloe vera is really good and turmeric stops the diarrhea. Coconut oil is a great lubricant also. Hi Josephus,

I'm really hoping you get this, or happen to stop by on this thread...

I read through Don's webpage and decided to undergo the brown rice diet.

I am on Day 4... Just ate last meal of day, so I guess day 5 :)... Anyways, I was wondering if you eased into your regular eating habits after the 7 days according to Dom's instructions or if you eased into your regular habits like a regular fast, or if you just jumped right into your regular diet

Also, you said you had 4 quarter cup servings throughout the day... As in just a quarter of a cup of brown rice 4 times a day! ? That sounds great because I'm having trouble finishing more than 4-5 bite fulls of rice this far into the diet as just the smell of the brown rice is kind of nauseating to me. Would also love to hear how you're doing this long after going through it... God Bless

Dietary Changes
Posted by Chris (Logan, Utah) on 01/19/2011

I think that the food diary and watching what you eat is a good idea, however, it's different for everyone. You can't say that every person with UC who eats these foods will have problems, because that's just not true. I have UC and yellow cheese doesn't bother me at all, neither does rice. It may work for some people, but for others the foods they eat don't really affect them. I seem to be the same no matter what I eat. There is no need to assume that your list of approved foods is the way to go for everyone.

I suffer from ulcer colitis and this is the cure but you have to use it every now and then, just add anti inflammatory also like fish oil or bee probolis or acai berry etc, glutamine will cause alot of side effects so I advise to avoid it because if you discontinue a flare up will be worse than before. I puncture one vitamin e capsule and use it once or twice a day and take bee probolis, almost feeling normal. Do it guaranteed

Baking Soda, Milk of Magnesia
Posted by Naturopathicgail (Sacramento, Ca, Usa) on 01/15/2011

Regarding Ulcerative Colitis, I hold Ted's knowledge in high esteem. But regarding the killing of bacteria in the colon, I would highly recommend using a product called MMS, or Master Mineral Supplement. It is inexpensive and can be ordered on the internet, sold as lowly "water purifier." It will NOT harm healthy tissue whatsoever, yet it will kill any pathogen known to humans. It stays active in one's system for 2-3 hours, so can be taken several times per day. Mix 3 drops of the Mineral with 3 drops of the Activator and let sit for three minutes. Add an inch or so of non-acidic juice or Beverage and drink.

As far as a soothing and healing agent, I don't think anything quite matches Liquified Bentonite. It's soothing and very healing. Take 1/4 cup mixed with non-acidic juice or beverage upon arising, between meals and especially at bedtime. Natural Liquid Vitamin E is also a wonderful soothing agent when taken at bedtime.

Avoid Dairy products, all refined sugar and fried foods. Almond milk is a great substiture for those who want to avoid soy. Many with bowel disorders find wheat products which contain gluten only irritate the colon. Brown rice flour and pasta etc. can easily be substituted and are much easier to digest. For those with very high acidic levels, usually Type O bloods, eating meat and fish actually helps control the acidic beast. It's like throwing a chunk of meat to a shark. If you don't, the acid (shark) actually attacks the lining of the stomach and the intestines. Be sure that ANY white meats or occasional reds are completely hormone and pesticide free. They MUST BE thoroughly masticated and never, ever fried. Steamed vegies are an amazingly healing accompaniment as well as gold or red baked potatoes. I hope this helps many of those suffering.

Hydrogen Peroxide
Posted by Eric (La, Ca, Usa) on 12/26/2010

I do take turmeric but only in capsules. I know that there is a powder form that may be better to take, but how would I go about taking it? Would just mixing it in water work? I'll definitely look into getting slippery elm or marshmellow root, I would still like to try the H2O2 but will hold off on that for a later time, I have just heard many great things about it. Theres a book that I read and was about a lady who took H2O2 with colitis and said shes been symptom free ever since. Thanks for the advice I appreciate it so much!

Hydrogen Peroxide
Posted by Elizabeth (Nashville, Tn) on 12/23/2010

I don't think ingesting H202 would be a good idea with UC, since the intestines are in a damaged and fragile state. You need to focus on soothing and healing the intestines. I would start drinking aloe vera juice, the kind that "tastes like spring water", can't mention the product name but starts with a "G". This doesn't have the properties of aloe that cause diarrhea, which people with UC don't need... Also look into herbs that soothe and heal the mucus membranes of the body.. Slippery Elm and Marshmallow Root are two good ones.. There are more. The turmeric was a lifesaver for me with my IBS-D.. It literally healed my IBS within weeks... I now take a maintenance dose every day. Do you take the turmeric with a healthy fat? This makes all the difference in the world. I hope you continue to feel better. Good luck!

Dear Ted,
I am 20 years old and I was diagnosed with UC about 10 months ago. Through this ten months my doctor prescribed me with Prednisone and Apriso. Those things did work for me to begin with, but after I got off the prednisone I flared up again, this happened about 3 times. So I gave up with the Apriso feeling like that wasn't working well enough and went to taking Boswellia, Turmeric, Olive Leaf Extract, and Aloe Vera Gel, all in capsules. This has been working very well for the last month or so but I still feel like a flare up could happen anytime.

So my main question is, is it safe for a person to take H2O2 with UC? I've read in some places that it is possible that it could rupture the colon... But then I have also read that it has healed and cured some peoples UC. Please advise! Thank you in advance!

Hey, back in the beginning of February of 2010 I had to go to the hospital and they told me I had colitis. Well, now that you mentioned antibiotics, I remembered that earlier in the year I had been given antibiotics for my tonsilitis. But I wanted to make sure if it was before or after my flare up. I just found my pill bottle and the date I was prescribed those antibiotics was about 15 days prior to me getting very ill with colitis. I think I may just have found what caused my colitis. In my opinion, penicillin will definitely kill off your good flora. However, I was given different antibiotics specifically for calming down colitis flare ups. So I think penicillin is really bad for your intestines. It attacks the bad and the good. Thanks for your info. [email protected]

I have been 16 years free from ulcerative colitis. It has never come back. You are what you eat. Eat healthy and be healthy. Eat closer to the way nature grows food, the less ingredients or processing of any kind, the better it is for you. Don't believe the packaging or ads. Do research! I'm on this site because I don't believe everything doctors tell me, because they are regulated by an agency. I do believe the facts and results.

Hi everyone! I've had this uc for almost 7 years with very severe symptoms. I've been hospitalised for several times and had bood transfusion etc. I tried all the remedies on this website and from other websites and book etc. I was on very strong medications... Now I am not taking any medicine. I am not cured though yet but it is under control. I would like to give you some of the informaiton that I used to treat my UC. I just would like you to let me khow if they work for you then I will give you more information and remedies. These are the remedies I used:

1. Fresh lemon juice with a glass of warm water and a table spoon of honey half an hour before any meal, specially on an empty stomach.

2. Boil 2 spoons of dry deel with 2 cups of water until it left only one cup and then drink it when it is warm with a tps of honey every morning and every night ( do this specially when you have white tong)

3. Cut done all the unhealthy foods, junk foods etc

4. Use zinc in your apple juice drink every day

5. If you buy fruit juice from the market, make sure they are not added sugur or preservetive.

6. Take a one month fresh grape juice diet (drink one cup only grape juice every one hour but nothing else)... I did this only for 2 days and it seemed to be working but I was not too determined to continue.

Plz let me know the result if somebody goes for more days. Good luck

Dear Freakzilla154,

Colitis, IBS, Crohn's disease, Ulcerative colitis are just names of infections of the bowels. Like an infection of a kidney can give you kidney failure, an infection of the bowel gives us all what I like to call bowel failure ( Colitis, IBS, Chron's disease, Ulcerative colitis, Ulcers, you name it). To reach your health again, you have to treat the infection causing your bowel failure. The first big bug than can causes those bowel failures is bacterium avium, which most doctors misdiagnose. This bug will suppress the immune system and invade all your body including your bowels. You will feel extreme fatigue and bowel failure. What you can do to treat this bug is to take H2O2 therapy. You can also drink ozonated water 6 times a day to kill the bug. I have read that magnetic pulser can destroy this bug. You have to take also ionic silver or colloidal silver internally everyday in order for you to weaken the bacteria. Ted also said that borax also kills those mycoplamas. Since your immune system is suppressed by this bacteria (AIDS like state is attributed to this bacteria), you have to take selenium, zinc, magnesium, potassium, 2000U VitD3, Vitamin B complex. You have also to ch-elate your mercury by EDTA or some humic acid or chlorella.

Candida also can be a cause, but Candida in many cases is just a symptoms of mycobacterium avium infection. Killing the mycobacteria will definitely kill the candida. Hope that will help you a bit

Hello everyone! I've had Colitis/Proctitis since 2005. I suddenly got very ill one day and since then my digestive system has never been the same. Blood, Mucous, Loose Stools, Constipation, Smelly, Cloudy (sorry, just want to be precise). Along with the UC, just my facial skin and scalp have become oily and I get these awful plugs (either keratin or something) that come out of my hair follicles. My skin also becomes dry eventhough it looks oily. It's strange and I hate it. It gets itchy. . . I've also had test done through urine, that showed a toxin for C. Diff and mercury (normal was 3 and I was a 7). Anyways, I do believe my digestive system is the cause of all of this. I've always had alittle dry skin but since my UC problems arose so has the skin issues. My also extremely tired all the time and can't gain wieght like before. My joints and bones hurt, it's weird. So, I do take meds for this. Lialda and Canasa, one is oral, the other a suppository. Does not do much.

I've tried many natural treatments. Right now, I'm also taking aloe vera juice 1-2 times a day, lugols iodine (6 drops) 2 times a day, and alot of glutamine 2-3 times a day. Also, I do take the baking soda by itself 1 time a day about 5 times a week. I did it with limes, but it makes me go even more. I tried the magnesium pills too but that does not go well with my colitis and I tried low doses. I do use magnesium spray though. With the baking soda, If I do 2 times a day I feel like it makes me go to the bathroom alittle more. . . However, I notice the baking soda has helped with my ear wax problem. The inside of my ears also get oily and some wax may build up, but the baking soda clears that. Wonder what that could mean? If I stop the baking soda for 2 days, it gets oily again in my ears. It doesn't clear up my face or hair though. I've tried applying directly to my face also, but too drying! So, I think my digestive issues have to be solved for everything else to get better! What in God's name can I do? This is horrible. I can't work out cause I'm to weak and my body isn't getting the right nutrition b/c my UC. I know my immune system probably stinks! Maybe Ted can help or other people! I have tested positive for SIBO (Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth) alittle while back, but who knows how reliable that test is or what it means. There are periods where my UC does get better for a month and everythings perfect, then BAM its terrible again. It's an on/off switch!

Any help please??

Baking Soda and Magnesium Citrate
Posted by Joseph (Boston, Ma) on 06/27/2010

First off, thanks for the feedback. I have tried L-glutaine on several occassions but haven't noticed too much of a difference. As for the Magnesium Citrate, isn't this a laxative? I would be a little concerned to take this as I am already going to the bathroom enough during the day and with some urgency. I saw Ted's recommendation but was still a bit nervous since my google search on magnesium citrate returned "laxative". I will take another look at Mag citrate.

Thanks,
Joseph

Baking Soda, Activated Charcoal, Supplements
Posted by Allison (Houston, Texas) on 06/26/2010

Hi Joseph,

Have you tried the magnesium citrate and L-Glutamine? According to Prescription for Nutritional Healing 3rd Edition by Phyllis Balch and James Balch, l-glutamine is a "major metabolic fuel for the intestinal cells and maintains the villi, the absorptive surfaces of the intestine" Page 666. Ted's recommendation of magnesium citrate is definitly worth a try also. Use the powdered form as a first choice, if no access to powder, then next best thing is the capsule form. As for your question of whether upping the dosage of activated charcoal would help or not, there's only one way to find out, and that is to experiment. I do notice that if you were to open one capsule of activated charcoal, there really isn't much there at all. As activated charcoal can be useful for food poisoning as well as gout (reduce uric acid in blood), my personal opinion is that for short duration such as for a few weeks or less, increase dosage should be ok as I don't think activated charcoal is toxic. Anyone feel free to correct me on that. My only concern is that it may keep you from absorbing your nutrient intake as well, thus personally I would not do long term high dosage of the activated charcoal. Also, for others reading, I forgot to warn in my first post that the activated charcoal we are talking about is NOT THE SAME as the charcoals used for BBQ. Do Not Use those charcoals for barbeque as they contain chemicals to promote burning and are NOT to be ingested.

Thanks for the information regarding Activated Charcoal. I have been battling UC in and out of remission. This time I was in the middle of a flare-up that was being stubborn. Activated Charcoal has slowed down my bowels and gas quite a bit. I take two in the AM and two in the PM. My stools are formed but are still very soft. Do you think it would be beneficial to up the dose or should I stick with 2 caps at 580mg?

Drink an ounce of Aloe Vera juice every day (I shwish it around then swallow for oral benefits also) You can mix a little fruit juice for flavor if you like. Eliminate all dairy products. There are many great substitutes: Soy yogurt, soy "ice cream" soy "milk" (add a little chocolate for flavor) tofutti "ice cream" tofutti cream cheese, (works great on a bagel or a burger) soy sour cream on baked potatoe.

I have been drug free for 21 years. If I cheat, I gurgle all night and have skin problems for weeks.

I have colitis, with an acidic PH for both saliva and urine. After reading Ted's comments, I have tried magnesium citrate, as well as lime and baking soda for months. But what did the trick for me to reduce the pain of colitis was: I used 1/2 teaspoon baking soda twice a day: once in the morning and once 30 minutes to 1 hour before bedtime. I put the baking soda into emptied geletin capsules ( about 3 capsules) and down them with a 1/2 glass of water ( the taste is too salty for me without the capsule. also, I didn't want the stomach acid to neutralize it before it gets down further in the intestine. If you don't use the capsules, use more water to make it more dilute so it doesn't burn or irritate the intestinal lining.) Then about 10 minutes before bedtime, I take one or two capsules of activated charcoals with 1/2 glass of water ( the brand I buy has 280 mg of activated charcoal in each capsule, thus 560 mg total if taking two. you can find this on the internet. If not, I am thinking activated carbons sold by fish pet shops might work similarly ( I personally have not tried this yet, but I would if I couldn't find any activated charcoals. If you have to use the carbon, please write in your feedback to others), but you will have to pulverize it or ground it up to make it into a fine powder to increase its absortive surface).

Reviews I read on activated charcoal uses include all kinds of stomach ailments including against food poisoning. I remember I had bought some potting soil once that had small pieces of charcoals in them to absorb the bad smell of bacteria. To experiment, I bought activated carbons from Walmart at the pet fish section and sprinkled a little to put into peatmoss for my potting soil. Results: the plants grew small and skinny dispite all the fertilizers I put in compare to similar other pots without the activated carbon. Lesson: The activated carbon absorbed so well it absorbed the fertilizer as well. The label warns that high absorbancy of activated charcoal may reduce the effectiveness of certain medications, thus take it at least 2 hours AWAY from your regular medications or vitamin/mineral supplements. I take mine right before bedtime so that it can have hours without interference from any food to work it's way through the intestines and absorb all the foul bacterias in there. If your colitis is highly active right now, you might consider increase the frequency of activated charcoal, perhaps up to three times per day. I saw results in mine less than a week. There is also the option of adding the activated charcoal to a water based enema, although I hadn't needed to use it this way. Use filtered water for this as regular water has clorine. Once the colitis is under control, I would reduce the amount and frequency used, again, because it will absorb your food and nutrients as well as the bad bacteria. You might consider taking some probiotics as well afterwards to build back the good gut flora.

If you have an acidic ph and it deems that you take baking soda, I strongly recommend you take a good quality vitamin B-complex, vitamin D, along with extra sublingual(under the tongue) folic acid and B-12 to ward against some of the side effects I read under the Baking Soda section on Earthclinic website. I recommend sublingual because I have read that some people's gut don't have the neccesary bacteria to breakdown and absorb the b-12, and that people with autoimmune diseases usually have deficient folic acid and vitamin d in their blood.

I have also found that both L-Glutamine and Sweet Dairy Whey have a firming quality in that they dry and firm up loose stools. So if you need to take magnesium citrate to alkalize the body( magnesium has a laxative effect), you might add 1 to 2 tablespoon l-glutamine or sweet whey to reduce the side effects of magnesium. While those who suffers from constipation in their colitis may want to add magnesium citrate to see if there is any relief.

All in all, ulcerative colitis is a bugger of a disease to battle! One med may work today but not another day. I hope my personal experience can offer those in active stages one more option to try to get this disease under control. Thanks, Ted! and Thanks Earth Clinic!

Vitamin E Enema

I was diagnosed with UC about 8 months ago and was on corticosteroids and salofalk. After coming off of corticosteroids, my symptoms returned though a bit milder(diarrhea and some bleeding). For some time I played with my diet but it did not seem to have a great effect. I would eat only rice and boiled chicken with no fruits or vegetables but it would only work the first day. Then I came across a post regarding Vitamin E enema. It said use 2 capsules and increase to 10. It also advised not to eat white flour, rice, milk, sweets and fruits but it lots of vegetables. So I started the enema and on the third day all my symptoms disappeared. It has been three weeks now and I have almost forgotten I have UC. The enema gives me a bit of gas but that's about it.

I actually have fruits too like banana, avocado and mango. I have stuck to the 10 capsules a day and I also take 1 orally, vitamin D (2 capsules) together with Calcium and magnesium (1 capsule), Selenium and L-glutamin. However I started those extra supplements one week after I started the enema so Vitamin E has done the miracle and the others I'm taking to help make the healing process faster.

The therapy must be for no less than 3 months. I will keep you posted after 3 months when I stop but I would do it my whole life if I had to given that I would be symptom free and enjoy my fruits and vegetables!!

Hi Kiarah;

If you have still not been able to access Dom's site... He suggests several things you can mix with your rice (I presume for flavor); 1 tsp natural non-pasturised soy sauce, 1 tsp non-pasturised miso, 1/2 cube sofu (preserved bean curd) and 1 cup green or herbal tea with each meal. He also says do not eat or drink anything not listed here. All that sounded like more than I wanted. I ate nothing but brown rice for seven days and it worked!!

Well I have read many times that the ingestion of flavanoids decreases inflamation. Great that you have found something that works, perjaps taking one of the products that contain red wine flavanoids or blueberry flavanoids might be a more efficient route. Just a thought good luck!

Hello,
I have been trying to find natural cures for my daughter's UC, which she has had since age 5. By accident, we discovered that eating large amounts of frozen blueberries would almost stop her bleeding and this was 10 years before anyone started studying them. Also, her Doctor of Oriental Medicine uses capsules of an herb called indigo that also stop the bleeding. As well, she has done well from eating black beans. There really seems to be a connection between these items and a rich purple/blue coloring chemical/nutrient that does something to seriously reduce the inflamation. Just recently her GI specialist started her on something called Floristor, an over the counter with beneficial yeast in a preparation similar to acidopholus in effect. I just read a study that combined blueberries and acidopholus that had some really promising results. After her being on every hideous drug made, I have never stopped looking for natural alternatives and have tried everything, including reiki, angel therapy, prayer, kinesiology, NAET. It is really difficult to find pediatric GI's who are open to any alternative medicine.

I was diagnosed with UC 34 years ago. After initial bout it went into remission for 10 years. NO meds, no doctor, perfect health and three children. Then it came out of remission with a vengence. I was on 6mp, asacol, and a specific carbohydrate diet. Took probiotics, fish oil and other supplements. Went off the 6mp but continued the other things and it stayed in remission NO flares for 6 years. Well, now it is back again. Asacol isnt working. Doctor says that this is the nature of the disease. Remissions followed by active disease. Push for remission but unless God intervenes realize it is most usually a lifetime of cycles of activity and remission.
