14 Natural Remedies to Soothe Tinnitus

Citronella Essential Oil

I had been suffering from tinnitus for about 2 years. I used to hear a roaring-booming noise like "ommm, ommm, ommm, ommmm" mostly in my right ear. Even stroking my right chin towards the right ear aggravated it. I thought it could be phlegm becoming lodged in my inner ear cavity because in the past during a cold or bout of a runny nose I did encounter this issue to a lesser degree and expelling the phlegm by inhaling forcefully and spitting out the phlegm brought about relief. But not anymore. My tinnitus had become chronic and I was desperate and troubled. In enclosed spaces like a restaurant with poor acoustics when family members and many other people were chatting away close by I felt "drowned" and kind of tormented, being bombarded by so much noise even while others were enjoying themselves. I reckoned it could be phlegm stubbornly lodged in the inner ear cavity caused by a runny nose for some time. In Chinese medicine, tinnitus is often traced to phlegm. Yes, so I consulted 2 TCM physicians but to no avail. I also tried other methods like stretching my earlobes, massaging them with essential oils, using a pharmaceutical nasal spray for blocked nostrils without much avail. I also drank Atractylodes decoction to fight internal dampness. That resolved the tinnitus for a time like a few months and I was elated. But the problem returned. Then one day because of sneezing and runny nose I decided to stop it with Citronella Essential Oil instead of taking Chlorpheniramine an anti-histamine pill that although could help my sneezing and runny nose had the side effect of making me drowsy.

This is what I did.

I folded a handkerchief into a 1 and a half inches width and poured a few drops of Citronella Essential Oil on it. I laid down on my bed and placed the handkerchief over my nose in contact with the oil. I breathed in and out through the handkerchief for half an hour. I felt the sting of the Citronella fumes in my sinuses, so I controlled my inhaling to prevent too much pain. But other than that there was no harm experienced by me by inhaling this oil. Anyway, after half hour of such inhalation, I experienced a discharge of watery mucus from my nostrils like having a cold. I sensed something good about it. I cleared my nose. After that my tinnitus of 2 years was gone for good! Imagine after despairing for so long and searching here and there on the Internet for a cure, I bumped into one myself. And this happened like 10 months ago and the tinnitus has never returned. I am completely cured.

Now let me try to conjecture why I got that kind of tinnitus and why the said treatment worked. I believe in the past I had not nipped my frequent runny nose in the bud by taking medicine (like anti-histamine pills which I was not aware of in those days) to suppress it but had allowed it to fester so that phlegm had collected in the inner ear. This, in turn, promoted the rise of bacteria and/or viruses of whatever kinds I cannot tell. And like the BIOFILM which some scientists have found in intestines of IBS sufferers, BIOFILM (aka mucus or phlegm in common lingo) becomes a very strong castle-like habitat of bacteria and viruses.I believe it is the same with phlegm lodged in the inner ear cavity. So when I inhaled the Citronella Essential Oil it penetrated the phlegm and effectively killed these bad bacteria and inactivated any viruses. I write this in the hope that some sufferers might benefit from this testimony. If your tinnitus is caused by a history of rhinitis (runny nose, sneezing, mucus, cough) then it is possible this method might help.

Good Luck!

DMSO
Posted by Alysia (Az) on 05/15/2018

Regarding DMSO: I think it may indeed be helpful as I experimented with it in the early stages of Tinnitus when I was desperate and before I habituated with the hiss noise. I had some liquid DMSO I used for general aches and pains on the body and since I was sticking all kinds of remedies I could think of in the ear, I just poured the straight DMSO liquid into the ear and there was instant silence. I thought I had cured it! But it did come back. I have not tried this again as knowing the DMSO is a solvent I was worried that applying things topically, I might do more damage than was already done to the inner ear.

Over time, the conditioned has lessoned and become bearable with other remedies and watching diet. However, I wanted to share that one moment of total silence might mean something, that I can try this again perhaps once or twice a week, and see if I'm helping it further. Thank you for the report.

Thank you! This is exactly what I was looking for. I have this oil (though it's probably old) and was wondering if this is what I needed. I know my ringing in the ears is from exposure to loud (rock band) noise when I was young. Thus, figured mine was from nerve damage and I do remember hearing from my EO company founder that they had repaired hearing in the deaf ear that was due to nerve damage. Thank you for your instructions!

ACV can help, but you need to dilute it for sure. Put about one tablespoon of Apple Cider Vinegar and one tablespoon of good, clean water in a small saucepan and very gently warm it up. Not hot, just warm enough to be comfortable. Use an eye dropper and put a couple of drops in your ear. Do this 3-4 times a day.

Oh boy did I have a miserable last three days. In my left ear there appeared a whooshing rythmic pulsating loud heartbeat. Had to raise level of tv and turn on music to drown it out at bedtime. My remedy today was hydrogen peroxide in affected ear, ( laid down 10 minutes) then an 8 ounce glass of spring water with tablespoon of ACV. Drank it down in one shot with straw....waited....nothing happened. Lo and behold 3 hours later I am back to normal and joyful. It works, yay!!!!

Posted by Ann (P.s. Ca) on 07/23/2017

Hi Grace, I know this is an old post, however others may benefit. The hydrogen peroxide is dissolving the wax in your ear(s) that is blocking the ear channel, things can sound louder or not, however you may hear your heart more at night when in bed. I had an ear Dr., tell me to use hydrogen peroxide to clean my ears once a month, no q-tip as that can push wax down further as well as remove some. My relief was very sweet indeed. Hope this helps

Hi Ron, You can try essential oil drops. Look up drops for tinnitus, read the reviews to find the best one. You can also make your own by looking up the ingredients on the bottles, you need to however be very familiar with essential oils. You use them behind the ear, not inside. Many people have had success with them. The essential Oils are diluted with a carrier oil as the EO's are very strong. Do some research, and good luck.

I was searching for a treatment for tinnitus yesterday and was told by an elderly phamacist that aspartame, the junk they substitute for sugar to make things like drinks diet, is believed to be one cause of ringing in the ears. Mine started back in 2004 after a ruptured aneurism. I figure that I was lucky to be alive and was told that there is no cure, so I have been living with it for the last 13 years, and now I hear about ACV and think, I have this in my cabinet ALL the time. Cant wait to try it out and see how it works.

Posted by Lotus Blossom (Washington) on 03/04/2017

You can drink Hydrogen peroxide? Even in tiny amounts, I thought it was not supposed to be ingested. I have been suffering with tinnitus with "ear fullness" and "head fullness" sensation, and a slight hyper sensitivity to noise, for over a year. It began after I had gone one full year with no menstrual cycle, thought I had started menopause, but then no - I got one period, then another one, and it was right at the start of this first period after one year without them that the tinnitus began. Because of this I believe mine is due to menopausal hormone imbalance.

I also wonder now if it related to heavy metal build up, although I don't think I have the typical symptoms of that except I drink well water, which has a lot of iron in it (the water is safe to drink, has been tested, but it has a slight "iron" color and chalky taste. So now I wonder if I have too much iron from my well water. But the main ear-hearing problem seems to be related o hormone imbalance. I have been trying to get relief from many things, nothing works, and I am trying two OTC hormone creams (Progesterone and Estriol), both of which contain only very small doses of hormones, so might not make any difference at all. My doctor is no help at all. I would like to try this remedy here with the water, baking soda, and hydrogen peroxide, but I want to be sure it is safe to drink. Thank you for any advice.

Topical Vinegar, Baking Soda and Borax Solution

This was strictly a fluke cure! I have suffered from Tinnitus for about 7 years. From mild to extreme vibration hums and ringing.

My ears were itchy so I decided to spray a homemade solution I use on my feet after showering. In a spray bottle it's 30% water + 30% apple cider vinegar with 15% Borax and 15% baking soda. Put baking soda in after vinegar and slowly as it volcanoes .

Apply with fingers all around outer and inner ear, than a q tip for inner ear. Works after 3 days and I have no idea how or why! My guess could be some Tinnitus may be caused by mites in the ear. After 7 years what a relief.

I tried the ACV treatment for my tinnitus by eye dropping ACV into my ear every night for 2 weeks, and nothing much happened, and I started to think that this treatment might just be an old wives tale. Then after a couple of days of non treatment and I noticed that about 80% of the hissing sound in my ear had gone. I was re enthused so started using it again, and voila!! It went away completely. I'm really quite astonished as my local doctor told me years ago that there's no treatment for this condition, like hell there isn't . If and when it returns, I'll simply resume the treatment. What a relief . Thank you so much Earth Clinic/ Phil

Thank you, thank you, thank you. I've had ringing in my right ear for at least a week now. I went to the Doctor Yesterday to check on wax build up but my ears were clear. Hearing test was amazing for the right ear and good for the left. I've been reading allot, tried the Epley Maneuver, changed my supplements but after reading your post, I used my electric toothbrush to massage around my right ear and, hooray, the ringing has completely stopped. This is wonderful and I'll pass this one on. Again, thanks.

I have found helichrysum essential oil to greatly contribute to the reduction of tinnitus in as little as 3 days. The oil is massaged on the bone behind the ear. DO NOT put drops of the oil directly into the ear canal. A few drops can be put onto a cotton ball and placed in the ear overnight. There is an additional blend of other oils along with the helichrysum that I have not tried yet. So far the straight helichrysum is working wonders for me. A heads up...it's not cheap but a very little is working wonders so far.

I had a humming sound from inside my ear since two days ago. And was very troubled about the noise. Fortunately, the noise is gone once I managed to consult a doctor with the use of a few drop of disinfectant into my ear. (by the doctor)

I was told that it was the inflammation in my ear that was causing all the noise.

Just to share my experience. Hope that helps.

Multiple Remedies to Calm Tooth Disturbances
Posted by Kaya (Uk) on 06/29/2016

Hi, I wasn't sure where to post this, but just wanted to contribute my experience with treating tinnitus. Whenever my immune system needs a boost I have a series of remedies and supplements that I increase. In between times I relax the number of times I take these, but usually stick with ACV and honey as a drink, lemon and sodium bicarbonate just before cleaning my teeth and more recently, diatomaceous earth every day.

I would say my tinnitus is connected to a root canal filling I had years ago before I understood about the effect of these. Since then if my tinnitus starts up I've made the connection with 'disturbances' around that tooth. So I take oxygen, as a liquid supplement, and hold that in water, in my mouth for several seconds, a few times a day. I also take turmeric tincture a few times a day until it settles down again. It seems to help. Added to all of this I take Fo Ti tincture, which really helps my hair! But I think it is very good as an anti-inflammatory.

I hope that helps!

Magnesium and Citric Acid
Posted by Juliet (Austin, Texas) on 04/22/2016

You may want to join the Magnesium Advocacy group on Facebook. The group owner is Morley Robbins and he has uncovered lots of interesting research on magnesium citrate and why it is NOT a good form of magnesium to take.

Essentially magnesium citrate is a magnesium molecule that has been attached to ascorbic acid-- a synthetic form of Vitamin C. This synthetic C has been found to disrupt the function of an enzyme called Ceruloplasmin, which has as an important job the regulation of iron and copper in the body.

In addition, Ascorbic Acid is known to disrupt the healthy gut or intestinal bacteria. It is recommended instead to use a whole food Vitamin C such as found in the Garden of Life Vitamin Code Raw C product or also in Innate Response Whole Food Vitamin C. There are other sources of whole food Vitamin C as well.

As for magnesium-- magnesium oxide is OK-- but, the two most recommended forms are magnesium malate and magnesium glycinate as they are more easily absorbed.

Magnesium is needed for over 3,700 different enzymatic functions in the body and a deficiency can cause a host of symptoms. It is easily lost through stress and is depleted in our soil so, supplementation is usually required.

Last year in April I started having a thumping sound like my heart beat in my right ear while lying in bed at night. It was driving me nuts and I could not sleep. I read on this site that hydrogen peroxide may help stop the noise.

I had my husband with a dropper, drop one drop of food grade hydrogen peroxide 3% in my right ear. After the fizzing stopped everything was quiet. I was so grateful! The noise came back the two following nights and I reapplied the 1 drop of hydrogen peroxide and after that I had peace for 1 year.

Last night, April, I was really stressed over something and could not sleep and the thumping sound returned.

Once again the 1 drop of hydrogen peroxide stopped the noise and I fell asleep. I was so grateful. I recently had my ears cleaned so, I will need to investigate why in April I have this problem.

My brother-in-law had ringing in his ears but, this did not help him. By the way, his ringing in his ears left his ears on its own a month later.

Everyone is different, even the actual sounds are all different - mine sounds like someone next door has music on, so it's good to try the different cures because you never know what will work. For me the Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) in water works well. I take a shot glass and fill it 3/4 w water then top that with ACV, if I know I have been bad and consumed a lot of processed sugar I will take 2 shots. It's almost an immediate relief - within minutes. the funny part is, I tried the ACV drops in my ear and found zero effect - just illustrates how different we all are.

Don't get frustrated if one thing doesn't help, just try a something else. There are so many great tips and suggestions on here and for the most part they are not at all scary. Good luck!!

I'm with Judy on this. Couple of nights ago after watching an item on TV, I Googled the info and found 14 phone masts within 2 km which is the 'safety zone'. I have been experiencing tinnitus for 3 or 4 months now and I have been taking ACV daily for 5 years! Started after learning of the benefits of alkalising and it reduced hip pain of arthritis within a couple of days and got rid of 4 or 5 pounds of Christmas excess in a month. Now I'll stick some in my ear and hope it's equally effective but I still don't rust those masts. I have a mobile phone. Cost me about 9 bucks and I keep it in my purse for emergencies. These things cause neurological damage and cancers yet on the street or in stores every second person seems to have one glued to their ear as if their lives depended on it. Pretty sad when you realise the radio waves also negatively affect animals.

I don't have tinnitus, but came across this interesting piece of information that I had saved years ago. The person who sent it in to a newsletter had noticed one day when shaving that when his electric razor was close to his ear, the vibration gave him some relief from the tinnitus. He then discovered that if he put one of those slip-on pencil top erasers over the tooth brush on his S------- electric toothbrush, and used it every day to massage around his ear, using varying pressures until he could feel the vibration inside of his ear, it relieved the discomfort and the whistling subsided. At the time of his writing his tinnitus had all but disappeared, and he could often go four or five days without needing to re-treat.

The Snapping Method

In looking up some of these remedies for ringing in the ears/tinnitus, I found an article on Livestrong that helped me. Look it up on online, but I also describe it below. Didn't have any ACV, so I tried this for tonight. It helped! I was dancing at a loud venue last night for quite a while :/ So the pressure and ringing was really uncomfortable today. Not sure if this will work for chronic tinnitus or ringing caused by other things but it offered me some relief. "Better but not cured" because the pressure is not totally gone but there is relief! Ringing is less obtrusive. Huzzah!

So - the remedy: The article said to gently place the palms of your hands over your ears (cover your ears) with your fingers on the back of your head, with the middle fingers facing each other. You place your index finger on top of the middle finger then "snap" the index finger off the middle finger so that the index finger thumps firmly against the back of your neck (where your skull meets you neck). They say to do this about 50 times, and repeat several times a day, depending on severity.

I could hear the ringing especially with my ears covered, thumping away, and up to about the mid 40's suddenly there was a sense of calm and some clarity! Peace! That was pretty neat. Like something melted and released in my ears. Like I said, not entirely gone, but I feel relieved so I'll keep trying this (along with buying some ACV). My poor little ears! Love music so much, but yeowch... gotta be nicer to them from now on.

Grateful to find this. Hope it helps you!

I had been suffering rapid ear thumping in my right ear for a couple of months. They would sometimes be triggered off by a yawn or a burp but sometimes they would start seemingly without any trigger at all. The spasms could last about 6 or 7 seconds and occur 3 or 4 times per minute for up to 9 hours. I had also been suffering pulsatile tinnitus in my left ear probably due to a persistent ear infection.

I found that putting a largish piece of cut garlic in my right ear stops the thumping. I haven't had any for a while now. It is important that you cut the garlic to let the active vapours enter the ear. I would keep it in overnight. Also make sure the piece is large enough not to go down far into the ear canal.

I had this Tinnitus for about a year now and it was driving me crazzzzzzzzzzzzy! I think mine was triggered by a Wi-Fi device that seemed to have a particularly strong signal. I did not have this problem before I moved to a new home which had this Wi-Fi. Anyway, that was the start of it, then I moved to a new place and there was no Wi-fi signal, but the condition got worse! I hear the "whooshing" pulse and a few different ringing frequencies. My hearing is impaired and I thought I was going deaf, I can't hear any of the smaller sounds, and I get frustrated talking to people because I am unable to hear a lot of what they say. Anyway after dealing with this for way too long, I finally came here to Earth Clinic.

Upon reading about ACV. I tried it. It worked almost immediatly!!! I am so impressed. I think the causitive factors for this condition can be many, but it is also in large part because there are too many "organisms" inside the ear. They cause swelling and intefere with the normal ear functioning. The ACV. in the ear is anti-fungal, and anti-inflammatory so it works.

I used about a 70% ACV - 30% water solution. I put it in a clean small dropper bottle, and put about 1/2 dropper in each ear. The cool thing was that after I cleared out my right ear with a paper towel there was all this brown stuff on the towel. The left ear was mostly clear. I did this treatment twice a day for about 4 days and now there is no more Brown stuff coming out!!! All clear. I have to be honest, the ringing is not totally gone but it is so much better. I am very impressed with this simple remedy ACV!!!

Aloha from the big island of Hawaii!

What's happening across the board after Smart Meters are installed removing the safer mechanical analogs we once had on our homes, the pulsing of radiation throughout our homes (up to 190K times per day) is causing high pitched ringing in the ears. It's amplified by the amount of cell / receptor towers also being installed throughout our communities. It's EMF (electro-magnetic field) overload. It's jolting people awake as the utility companies download the data (data dumps) during the middle of the night. People are also complaining of being woken up generally on the hour. If our bodies don't get at least 5 hours of uninterrupted sleep, our bodies don't heal and our immune systems are depleted. Smart Meters are not mandatory so you can have an analog placed back on. Make sure it isn't a "trojan" analog, I.e., it still transmits data. Ringing in the ears is the least of health symptoms due to Smart Meters. Check out ~ SmartMeterEducationNetwork.com

I woke up tired, listless, with a horrible headache and the worst tinnitus I've ever had. By the way, my tinnitus is usually constant - less prevalent sometimes; more at other times.

After testing various foods that I'm allergic to yet still eat occasionally, I've found the culprits of my constant ear-ringing: wheat and milk (low grade tinnitus), nuts (high) and diet sugars (extremely high).

Last night, I made almond meal brownies, using lots of diet sugar and milk chocolate chips -- I'd stopped making these but because my husband loves them and asks for them, I occasionally make them for him. I had 5 small cookies. The tinnitus began just before I went to bed.

Here's what I did this morning: I diluted a dropper-full of ACV in 1/4 cup of water and put in both my ears -- no difference detected after 30 minutes. Next, I went with a few drops of straight ACV down each ear. Results: Tinnitus in left ear is totally gone; Tinnitus in right ear lessened to about 70%. Whooopeee! After finding the cause, FINALLY I've found, if not a cure, at least a relief! The cure, it seems, is to stop eating what I'm allergic to even when I'm cooking for others!

Until those allergens leave my body, I plan to spend the day drinking a teaspoon of ACV in every glass of water and, using the straight ACV drops (drained out after a minute), particularly before bed because the constant ringing keeps me from entering deeper sleep. I hope this helps other tinnitus sufferers! Caitlin

1-The one caused by inter ear damage and

2-The one caused by brain's wrongly interpretation (possible inner brain problems).

So for which one ALA or ACV type solutions are helping. Only ear related one? thank you.
