Effective Natural Remedies for Managing Sinus Polyps

Ginger Tea

I have had polyps for years, however they have been agitated recently because of the cold or some other factor I am unaware of. Two months I had intermittent infection because the polyps caused a post nasal drip. I went to three different doctors and finally got the steroid nasal spray. The spray was good for a week. However, my post nasal drip became worse. Tried vitamins, anti histamine etc.. I came across a home remedy website and tried ginger tea. I also tried breathing more with my nose. My polyps are there but have shrunk. I drink at least 2 cups a day with deep breaths from my nose. This technique didn't cure my polyps but made it more tolerable.

Alkaline Diet

Hi Oliver and everyone,

Oliver, it seems very good advice you give here. Doesn't seem to be missing much. Do you follow a low fat diet? I am thinking a no oil, no fat, no dairy diet might be good at least until healed. This means especially no meat, which has saturated fat.

anti-inflammatory omega 3 and antioxidants

boost nitirc oxide levels..spinach and beetroot

Just some further ideas to try.

I burst polyps after no fat vegetarian diet and it took one week.

Eliminate Sugar

You say that you had to revert to carbs because you became so weak.... May I ask what type of carbs? Simple or Complex? Simple Carbs are what are killing America. Do you know that every grain turns into sugar? The rule I give people is avoid anything white; white sugar, white flour, potato, macaroni cheese, fries etc. You can certainly eat COMPLEX carbohydrates and eaten with protein is good. Have an avocado vinagrette instead of a Big Mac meal for example. I buy Ezekial bread - it is made with sprouts of seven grains. The sprout stage of a grain is the most nutritious, therefore this bread is FUEL for the body, unlike the white flour baked goods that go on the arse and hips. Love handles, baloney! Soft flabby bodies (from all the sugar breaking down the minerals in the body) I say. I load the Ezekial toast with REAL butter; either Irish, Danish, Australian or New Zealand (where they still haven't destroyed or watered down the butter with cheap additives) or coconut oil is great too. Second I scrape on a tiny spread of Miso (fermented soy paste that is nutritious) for a little salt flavor, add slices of avocado and pile with 2 inches of Alfalfa sprouts. This is a dieting meal for me. Try it! If you do not know these terms it is time that you researched them and learnt. Food is meant to be UNprocessed, WHOLE and nutritous for our bodies. Eating for our ancestors was not a hedonistic activity, it was an action done to run the body with the purpose of survival. When we get back to basics here in America, the population may heal itself from the diseased condition it has arrived to at present. 13 Nov. 2013

Karen, loved what you said & especially this: When we get back to basics here in America, the population may heal itself from the diseased condition it has arrived to at present.

This week we learned that diabetes is now considered epidemic level around the world, particularly in the United States. Corn syrup, honey, white flour or white crystalline sugar -- it is all the same. As Gloria Swanson's husband William Dufty indicated in his book "Sugar Blues, " sugar (and grains) is as incidious a poisen as heroine & cocaine.... and can be linked to nearly all health problems in our bodies today. Before she moved to another state, a friend once told me she swore off sugar for 1 year at the funeral of her beloved father who died of diabetes complications to his eyes, organs, and limbs. She said, with sugar being the only exclusion from her diet, she lost 30 pounds and she never looked or felt so healthy and beautiful. She said it was like looking in the mirror at another person. Before and after pictures of William Dufty are the same! It is UNBELIEVABLE how sugar DESTROYS our looks, our minds, our bodies! I learned some years ago that most killers in U.S. prisons were/are sugar addicts And, when prisoners volunteered to go on experimental diets that did not include sugar, their rage/desire to kill decreased. Sugar should be labeled a dangerous poisen to all human and animal species on this planet! Dare we go there? We will see....

Peace out, Caitlin

Sinus Papilloma

Hello Ingrid! I was diagnoised with the same thing 4 years ago.... I opted for no surgery, chemo or radiation. Mine was very large at the time and I need a team of surgeons! I was told the same thing it would come back or become cancer too. However I did not have a biopsy so really did not even know if it was already cancerous. Anyway, I went to a holistic Doc and went on a All Raw Food Diet! No junk no sugar! Just fruits and veggies! I juice carrots and beets, celery, cucumbers, ginger etc! I became very healthy and am doing great! My tumor is still there but not growing! Research all you can on holistic all natural ways to heal yourself! It works! :)

I stumbled on this post in researching this subject because I have just started taking massive doses in addition to lecithin. I believe this can work and already started noticing a help in my breathing. Lecithin contains choline which helps move fat. Vitamin A is a fat soluable vitamin and to function in the body is most likely going to need choline. So I think there is real promise here. I'll know more soon as I keep this up but I have had nasal polyps for years.

Anti-Candida Diet

I live on this beautiful unpolluted, tropical island. I have nasal polyps. I'm backing mould as the cause. I had a boyfriend with nasal polyps in Sydney years ago. His doctor suggested it was caused by mould (which backs up the candida connection) and recommended he kept his bedroom clear of dust (which becomes mouldy in hot damp climates) and to get plenty of sun in the room to kill any lurking mould. Swedish Bitters cause temporary relief, but if I miss a day, I can see it getting bigger. I already have a healthy diet which I adopted because of risk of return of cancer. My plan is to ferment. I've started with seeds. Today I'm going to start fermenting carrots and also carrot juice. If successful, I'll move on to pumpkin and then who knows?

I live in a large polluted city.

I have had a sweet tooth all of my life.

I have severe nasal polyps one of the symptoms of a condition called Samters Triad (inflammation of the lungs nasal passages and sinuses). I have tried lots of different so called remedies including the Manuel Richards method, Acupuncture and herbal infusions, nothing has has made any difference other than nasal corticosteroid spray which is no longer effective. I am trying to avoid systemic steroids due to the side effects, but feel now they are the only option left for me as surgery gives only temporary relief as the polyps grow back.

There are some drugs under trial at the moment which have shown to be effective, Fevipiprant and Dipilumab. Fevipiprant is currently available but prohibitively expensive and only prescribed to patients who have frequent admissions to hospital. Dipilumab is only available within a research study.

I have a healthy meat free diet, I have a saline sinus rinse morning and evening and I'm quite active.

I notice a slight improvement when spending time out of London, so living in a large polluted city doesen't help.

I will be trying some of the suggestions made on this brilliant website.

Fiber Supplement, Probiotics, Enzymes

Finally, I am finding relief from nasal polyps! Hello all. Like many of the rest of you on here, I have been suffering from this condition for over 30 years - 1 surgery 10 years ago which got me a year of relief, many courses of steroids and antibiotics (weeks of relief), but the polyps always grew back and I had tried every suggested natural relief on all of these web sites - nasal washes, sprays, anti-fungal treatments (which probably does work if the polyps were caused by a fungus - mine apparently weren't), hydrogen peroxide, tea tree oil and countless others - painful in the application and consistantly without long term success.

Since my theory in the cause of my nasal polyps has been that they were caused by food (I had them year round and in all locations where I travel so any dust, exposure to bedbugs or pets never seemed to be making it any worse) - I figured it was probably food. Recently, I changed my diet to cut out coffee, sugar, salts, wheat, alcohol (like the rest who have stated on here, alcohol is an instant trigger). I had run out of foods to eat... But, it did appear to not be getting any worse. I was due for another surgery and I really wanted a natural cure, but still wanted to eat what I wanted and to be able to breathe through my nose (something I haven't been able to do for years! ).

1 month ago I tried a 'gentle, all-natural fiber supplement with probiotics and enzymes' - as it says on the label. Reasonably priced at under $10 per bottle for 150 capsules taking 6 per day. And OMG, joy of all time joy - my polyps are shrinking and I am able to blow my nose and even breathe out of both nostrils!!! To all of you who have given up on ever finding a long term solution, please try this out (not sure if similar items will work as well, since I had success with this one I have not tried anything else).

I had longed to find something that will work for so many years now and this is shrinking the polyps. I am back to eating almost normally - I still stay away from alcohol. The polyps are not gone but they no longer protrude down my nostrils. No surgery for me now. I will update here again with progress. I pray for all of your speedy recoveries from this relentless suffering. Best wishes.

I've suffered with polyps for nearly 20 years now and have had two operations neitehr of which has been all that successful. Yes, I can breathe, but I cannot smell or taste anything without taking oral steroids. My doctor will no longer prescribe them due to the long term side effects, and I am desperate. I also had a aprtial thyroidectomy four years ago and although I take medication, I am permanently tired and am becoming depressed as a result. I am excited to read this post which theorises on the linking between the two. I shall begin my sugar elimination regime NOW!!! And hope for some relief.

Eliminate Sugar
Posted by Brian (Adelaide, Sth Aus, Australia) on 03/09/2012

Hi Belinda. Sounds like you have done it tough for 20 years but welcome to my theory about the cause of nasal polyps and the 4 week cure. Forget the oral steroids, I tried them too, also expensive steroid nasal sprays. The trick is to reduce the sugar to the barest minimum because it is impossible to eliminate sugar completely from the diet. Here are two more tips I haven't mentioned before:

1) Besides the sugar content displayed on packaged foods, if you google or search 'nutrition data' you will find a site (no affiliations, not even a member) with all the sugar content of natural foods. Don't eat any fruit or natural food with more than 5% sugar content of total weight and the curing occurs.

2) The condition worsens initially and you may think this is a wasted effort, but please persevere. As the nasal polyps shrink and the passages to the sinuses reopen, there is a lot of trapped gunk up there that finally comes out. Take this as a positive sign of healing in action, it will soon pass.

In about 4 weeks time, it would be great to hear about your progress.

Brian.

Eliminate Sugar
Posted by Brian (Adelaide, Sth Aus, Australia) on 05/05/2012

Hi Kathryn. It was unintentional if I implied that vitamin D is produced by the thyroid. My intent was to say that the thyroid controls the production of vitamin D and I did omit the explanation for that in my original post for the sake of some brevity.

You are quite right. When the skin is exposed to ultraviolet radiation it converts a cholesterol derivative in the skin into calciferol, or vitamin D3. The calciferol travels in the blood to the liver where it undergoes a first conversion and then on to the kidneys for a second conversion into calcitriol. Calcitriol is the biologically active form of Vitamin D. However, the link with the thyroid is that the conversion in the kidneys is promoted by a hormone released by the thyroid.

My theory is, when the thyroid receptors are confused by ethanol into thinking there is enough vitamin D in the body, then the thyroid shuts down the release of the hormone which is needed by the kidneys to enable the second stage conversion, which then results in a vitamin D deficiency. Vitamin D is crucial to the proper functioning of the immune system. My theory included affecting the ability of the Eosinophils to battle the fungi residing in the nose - in a weakened state, they accidentally irritate the nasal lining instead, which then causes the polyps to form which then causes the breathing difficulties.

I theorised that the weakest link in this eternal loop of misery was to reduce the ethanol produced by the fungi by reducing sugar in the diet. This would not only starve the fungi but also un-confuse the thyroid, get vitamin D production going again to boost the immune system and thereby give more grunt to the Eosinophils to do their job properly and provide the knock-out blow to them.

I'll now take this opportunity to make an important alteration to my theory and therefore the diet strategy, that being in every post I have made so far:

WHEREVER SUGAR IS WRITTEN, REPLACE IT WITH CARBOHYDRATE.

About 5 weeks ago I had nasal polyps reform with a vengeance, worse than ever before. I was eating low sugar foods but they were high in total carbohydrates. Remembering what Carly from Seattle said, I took her clue and went to the next level and limited the foods in my diet to Total Carbohydrates of 10% of Volume. The body does need carbohydrates for energy, I'm not saying go to zero level, just back them off. I can only guess that being deprived of simple sugars, my body got more efficient at metabolising the sugars in the more complex carbohydrates, the starches.

So out went the pizza, potatoes, oven baked chips and crumbed fish. The fungal die off stage was the worst ever this time - sniffling, snortling and nose blowing 24/7 for about 2 weeks. I persevered through it all, staying with the revised theory and then suddenly in the space of 48 hours, almost miraculously, I went from full blown symptoms to absolutely no symptoms at all.

The result the third time is the same as my first two efforts with simple sugars, cured again. The polyps have either gone or shrunk away and I am breathing free and easy again. Life is so much better without them and I'm not about to invite them back soon - I'll stay with the 10% carbs plan instead.

Eliminate Sugar
Posted by Brian (Adelaide, Sth Aus, Australia) on 06/03/2012

Hi Robbie. That is great news! Cured in 5-days is a truly amazing feat and I too had very early success with just cutting out simple sugars. But I am fearful your polyps will reform as mine did (the fungi that are the root cause are very resilient). Perchance they do, please remember to limit all Carbohydrates to 10% of product consumed and then just persevere for renewed success.

The most successful anti fungal/anti polyp diet should consist of nothing but lean meat, eggs, nuts and low carb vegetables (luckily I love steak or lamb chops & 3 veg, beef & veg stews, mince meat recipes, almonds, strawberries & cream and for breakfast, bacon & eggs alternated with avocado & yoghurt). No other fruit except tomatoes. No cheese. Also limit caffeine which prompts the liver to dump large doses of sugar into the blood stream. I will admit I do eat wholemeal bread at 37% carbs as toast under the bacon & eggs and also for a work lunch sandwich but I offset the bread with low carb fillings so the total carbs in the meal itself is under 10%.

I don't believe this is a lifelong sentence and at a guess may need between 4-6 months before safely reintroducing sugary products again but by then, the yearn for sugar (read poison) has hopefully diminished anyway.

Thank you for the Yea!

My original theory on a yeast infection being the true cause of nasal polyps included the extension that it also caused corruption of the Immune System. It could also be that the reactions to dairy that Lisa described “Mucus, olfactory issues, swelling of the throat, itching ears and more” are also caused by a corrupted Immune System, which identifies the proteins in dairy as an invasion, releases antibodies in response, which in turn release histamines which then cause the bad reaction.

I will further theorise that it should then follow that the ability to consume dairy products without any ill effects would confirm a healthy Immune System. Conversely, a bad reaction would therefore confirm a corrupted Immune System which in turn, must then confirm a yeast infection as the cause of the corruption.

Yeast infection can only be eliminated by diet, by removing their carbohydrate food source being sugar and starch. Low Carb diets abound and can be quite confusing. I ignore them all and apply a 10% Carbs Content Rule to stand alone and products in combination meals. There are only three simple qualifications to apply:

  • Convert the Total Carbohydrates total on packaged products to a percentage by weight or volume. Avoid any over 10% unless to be combined with a lower offset.
  • Determine carbs content in fruit, vegetables, nuts and seeds by researching ‘nutrition data'. The site I use, typing “raw” after a product limits the result.
  • To maintain energy levels, consume protein in moderation and healthful fats without restriction but totally avoid all products containing trans fats.

High carb diets are also implicated in probably all of the major ailments that befall the world today, even including cancer. The only happy people are surgeons and owners of white collar drug companies and their shareholders.

Life is all about choices. People can also legally choose to either smoke or not and one is a healthier option than the other. In a perfect world, everybody would live their life without medical expenses. I have been polyp free and medication free for a long time now and instead of thinking Low Carb as being a restrictive diet, I think of it as a lifestyle choice. It isn't a diet anymore, it's simply a better way of life and easily the best choice.

Cheers.

Hello Brian from Australia,

Concerning loss of sense of smell. I did enjoy your post and your fine analytical style.

If you google "google scholar" and then "reasons for loss of sense of smell" you'll find a number of scientifically inclined papers which discuss a primary reason for loss of smell as

......Infection. And next,

......Lesions from some trauma to the nose/head.

For infections, I use colloidal silver to knock out viruses and for the lesions the use of serrapeptase, the enzyme which seems to have the ability to dissolve tissue structure. For instance, "serrapeptase scare tissue."

Other possible causes but of the articles that come up under the search I mentioned, those two seemed to be the most common.

On the "yeast infection" theory, very close to being "right on" but also might be viral. So if this were me, I'd at least try colloidal silver. I use CS as an irrigation; if it stings, I know an infection is present. I have to repeat many times to completely knock out the infection.

"Cheer" back at you.

WARNING!

With every due respect to Tim's conviction and noting there is no follow up post for over 2 years, it was a dangerous can of worms anyway. About 740 million people in the world are infected with hookworm and not by choice, which is viewed as a disease and not a treatment, mostly through Asia, Africa and South America. Hookworm infections have virtually been eliminated in Australia, Europe and North America. I doubt that it follows that not one of those 740 million people don?t have nasal polyps too. Hookworms have a mouthful of teeth, which is scary enough, and mature into adults in the small intestine where they ingest blood, rupture the red blood cells that carry oxygen around the body and degrade haemoglobin. Diarrhoea, abdominal pain, intestinal cramps, loss of appetite, vomiting and anaemia are symptoms. Possibly it was a loss of appetite and a reduced food intake that gave Tim the results he claimed. As an off topic, cane toads were introduced into Qld sugar cane fields to control a beetle problem. The cane toads are now the bigger problem, impossible to eradicate and infest most of the northern half of Australia, and are killing off the smaller natural inhabitants ? there is a lesson in that. Cheers.

I am 67 and have nasal polyps, sinus disease and asthma for the last ten years. I have had several surgeries for polyp removal, my septum straightened and my left drainage port, (top of the nose) widened. The left side has caused no problems for six years, but the other side makes my life AWFUL.

I do the following self help. Nasal douching, made of warm water and a teaspoon of sea salt. As I pour into one side of my nose, I also sniff it right back into my throat. Then spit it out. That really helps and I've never had a single cold in the last two years. I do this as often as needed. I have so many polyps I have to take steroid drops, but by douching have cut that down to under half the frequency.

I do yoga every day, the inverted positions are invaluable and I eat a diet of 80% fruit and veg. This is a good anti inflammatory diet.

I'm having surgery in two weeks and feel very confident, that once gone, I will keep my nose free of nasties providing I keep up the diet, douching and yoga.

1st of all, thank you all for sharing your experiences and self experimentation. I too have suffered from 25 years of nasal polyps - if I knew then how this would effect my quality of life, I would have cut off my nose. I have had 1 surgery, enjoyed a sense of smell for around 6 months and breathing for a couple of years before the polyps returned. After nasal sprays and on and off Prednesone, I was about to go for the 2nd surgery when I came to this site.

So far, I have tried just about every suggestion here. To summarize -

Hydrogen Peroxide 3% - made my nose burn like crazy and bleed, but seemed to reverse the growth - might be a solution if you can stand the cure.

Sinus Wars 13 - seems to dry me out, but no shrinking of the polyps. Still taking it as it doesn't seem to hurt - been on it about a month now.

Manuka Honey - nice honey, bit expensive and might be beneficial to a nasal infection, but didn't seem to shrink the polyps.

Nasal wash - clove oil, salt, baking soda, warm water - helped to clear out some nasal congestion and like the HP 3%, it burnt like crazy so didn't look forward to those washes.

Tea Tree Oil - Ta Da!! It is now about 2 weeks since I started treatment, and I was really hoping this was the one. It doesn't sting the nasal pasages, but it does make me cry as it gets near the eye ducts. Well, the polyps are not gone yet (they started out as really large pushing my nose out and coming out into both nostrils) but I now have days that I can breathe out of my nose! Just like nature intended :-) I am really hopeful that the polyps will keep shrinking. Initially the polyps fought back and enlarged, but after a few days, they started turning to another consistancy and then shrinking. This was not a few days solution for me, but weeks - keep it up every day (qtip with the Tea Tree Oil up the nose several times a day, as mentioned on here - Thank you! ).

That plus - no alcohol and no coffee (both are important to quit so please just do it - drink tea but not Tea Tree :-) and Exercise - so many people are saying that on here, and it is so true. That keeps the gunk flowing. Drink water, of course.

My theory is that there are several causes of these nasty creatures - dry nasal passages, allergies, fungus. They probably have different cures too depending on your cause. I believe the Tea Tree Oil keep the passages moist and probably kills the fungus too. Avoid whatever allergies you have as best as you can too, because all of these cures are based upon letting the body heal. Best breathing to all!

Hi All

Having suffered from a return of nasal polpys follwing 2 bouts of surgery I consulted an Ayurvedic doctor and have found this regime really succesful in shrinking them and giving relief. I hope it helps some else as this is a really debilitating condition.

Eat 5-7 raw Basil leaves before breakfast and again before dinner

Get a fresh turmeric finger and hold it over a tea light until it smokes. Make a paper cone and inhale the resulting smoke thru the nostrils to relieve congestion and discharge mucus.

A teaspoon of castor oil taken for 4-7 dys also helps.

Avoid sugery foods and diary products as they feed the condition.

Do some yogic breathing exercises every day.

and the very thing is to make a steam bath as follows

Put several broken Basil leaves and 4 crushed garlic cloves in a basin of boiling water. Add a pinch of turmeric. Put a towel over your head and inhale for 20 mins for real and lasting relief if done daily.

Water Fasting
Posted by Vatos (Nijmegen, Netherlands) on 11/07/2010

Water fasting can heal sinus polyps because they are 'eaten away' in the cleaning and healing process. I think that water fasting is the first step. Because, eating 'non-allergenic' foods will only stop the polyps from swelling, but they will always remain because they are not completely removed. So eating those foods will help you only in the short term, AND you are devoted to eating non of those allergenic foods at all the rest of your life

Hi Tom,

I have read that the roots of the upper teeth can extend into the lower sinus cavities below the eyes. If the roots are infected then the sinus can become infected. I notice my chronic sinus problem flares up when I fall asleep without brushing my teeth. I'm not sure if this is because of allergy to the dental plaque or because bacteria migrate up through the dentin tubules into the sinus. Hope this helps, Steve

About me: I have had chronic sinusitis for around 10 years. I saw a surgeon today and my CT scan shows quite a bit of sinus polyp blockage. I am strongly considering surgery after trying many natural options, but am still looking for a natural preventative. The essiac tea seems like an interesting option, which I have not tried yet.

Its been 3 weeks since starting to treat polyps: allergy identification is crucial. My nasal rinse is 1/4 tsp sea salt, 1/4 tsp baking soda, 1 tsp glycerin, 4 ounces of thyme tea (just brew thyme like you would any kind of tea for 10 minutes and strain), 28 ounces boiled distilled water. We use a dropper to put squirts in the nostrils, 3-4 times per day. Once in a while we add grapefruit seed extract 2-3 drops to the ounce. Excellent results!!! The thyme tea is antifungal, antiviral. Also has tannins. On Essiac tea also, brewing it at home for little money.. Its no big deal to brew small batches.

The big winner in herbs is this invention of mine: 3 parts tumeric, 3 parts ginger root, 1/2 part horseradish, 1/4 part goldenseal. (example: 3 teaspoons each of tumeric And ginger , half a teaspoon of horseradish , quarter teaspoon goldenseal) All powder forms. Capped in 00 capsules, 8-10 a day. Cheap to do if you cap your own; you can buy this stuff and the essiac tea herbs at "years to your health" here in the metroplex, or online. I have no affilliation there, just been buying there for 20 years. They ship. Husband says the herbal capsules are a huge help. The food testing is great, and for sure he is eating correctly combined foods. (no protein with starch, etc. )He feels awesome and has lost 14 pounds.

Like many other posters here, i think it may be related to wheat/yeast/dairy allergies that you may not be aware of. eradicating certain allergy-inducing foods from our diets would definitely help the polyp shrink, but ive been tested as having only dust mite allergies, so im not entirely sure why i feel better when im only eating pure, natural foods. i hope someone can provide some better insight.

As a fellow nasal polyp sufferer, i really feel for all the people who post here. i wanted to add my 2 cents, and i really must to say, the most effective cure is the one that most people have been advocating. by no means is it easy, but the root cause of the condition is wheat and dairy. its been medically proven that NOT CONSUMING these products will give you instant and long-lived relief. but the problem is its generally impossible to avoid these types of foods, and so most people continue to suffer from polyps, not knowing the reasons why. following this logic, i've been consuming as little wheat and dairy as possible for the past 2 years, and drinking as much water as possible. whilst my polyps are not gone, they have shrunk drastically and continued to remain that way, and most days i dont even feel them in my nasal passage. so please take this into consideration, for your healths sake. good luck!

This time homeopthy didn't work for me. Everytime something different seems to work though my first aim is to control sinus. Did that with Sudafed non drying medicine. Then drank Job's tears powder mixed in hot water. One tablespoon per day. After 2 days polyp has shrunk considerably. Job's Tears is popular with Japanese and in Asian society. It's made with 'Chinese pearl barley'.

I see mention about diet. In Indian shops you will find Harad powder that taken after food prevents formation of sinus.

Sinus Headache Link

I have been diagnosed by an allergist/ENT with nasal polyps but my symptoms are a bit different from those declared by the rest of you. I don't have a cure or remedy to offer, but thought that my unusual but definitely related symptoms might shed some light for others.I don't suffer from the typical stuffiness and loss of smell, nor from drippiness and excessive tissue use. In fact, I seem to have almost no "nose action" going on at all (other than sneezing, which to be perfectly honest is not bothersome for me usually), until one day suddenly, I get an onslaught of a terrific sinus headache accompanied with debilitating nausea that can only be relieved with finally vomitting. I have been told since my youth (age 10 or so) that I have post-nasal drip (my only complaint then was terrible bad breath). I believe that the polyp causes or contributes greatly to the post-nasal drip and a build-up of mucous in my stomach which is the source of the great nausea. Another reason to instruct your children NOT to snork down the drainage instead of blowing their noses; that stuff builds up down there and the only relief is for it to come back UP!

Anyway, my question for the rest of you cure-seekers and diagnosticians is: does it seem plausible that this is not actually sinus or allergy based, but more of a migraine situation? I have undergone allergy blood tests and the results were very inconclusive. I suffer from this sinus-headache/nausea syndrome in all seasons of a 4-season region. It does seem to be worsened by consumption of frozen dairy (especially at night) and by having damp hair (i.e. not blow-drying my hair immediately after showering).

I appreciate any input!

Sinus Headache Link
Posted by T (Maryland, USA) on 06/03/2009

My son had the bad breath and on occasion coughing to the point of vomiting, which like yours came up with mucous in it. We went through the mill for several years with docs insisting he had seasonal allergies, asthma, etc. A nuumber of rounds of antibiotics were also given for sinus infection flare-ups due to all this. Like you, he generally didn't have dripping or stuffiness or any such symptoms you would think he "should" have by their (mis)diagnoses. When I stopped giving him milk, he stopped having problems.

He didn't have the headache problems you do, but I think it would be worthwhile to try stopping all dairy for a few weeks and see if that changes things for you. During that period, taking some ACV as instructed elsewhere on this site may be good to do just for general purposes. Something else that you might consider - my son recently had several slices of pizza with extra cheese (American cheese is no problem for him, but pizza cheeses are). Within a day, that telltale swampy smell began on his breath. I have a bottle of Atomidine here (it's a type of iodine, available at Amazon). I put a tiny smidge of a drop in juice and gave it to him, and I swear that 2 sips was all it took - the bad breath was instantly GONE and didn't come back! We were both floored. I believe the Atomidine knocked out whatever was brewing there from a dairy reaction. As in all things, you should always research for yourself before trying. Just a tip for something that you might find useful. Best of luck, and please do update us!

Posted by Kieran (Cookeville, TN, USA) on 03/25/2009

In reply to Marsha from Marietta: within 2 or 3 days there was noticeable improvement. They are not completely gone, my post should really have been labelled "better but not cured". I still have quite large polyps, but I can now breathe around them, the fat swollen places on the sides of my nose are now concave again as they used to be. It is a vast improvement in my case and a great relief for me. I can't guarantee it will work the same for you, if you choose to try it, but I certainly wish you well. I will post updates on any further significant changes, whether good or bad. I don't know how swabbing compares to squirting because I chose to simply swab. I look forward to any feedback from anyone else who may try this.

EC: Thanks for the update -- we've changed your rating to Better But Not Cured!

Saline Rinse

★★★★★

A few years ago I was having difficulty breathing through my right nostril. I used a small flashlight to see what was blocking the nostril. I saw a polyp about the size of a good sized pea. It was positioned less than an inch from the nostril opening. I touched it and it was hard. I was a little frightened by it. At age 55 I had never experienced one of these.

I started researching and found that Sodium can shrink swollen membranes. I then found out about Nasal Irrigation. Nasal Irrigation is where you add a small amount of salt to warm water and let the saltwater pass into one nostril and out the other. All I had available to use was a 16 ounce measuring cup.

I boiled about 4 ounces of water, put it in the 16 ounce measuring cup. Then, I added enough room temperature water so that the water was barely warm. In the summer I need to add about 12 ounces of water to the 4 ounces of boiling water and in the winter I only need to add about 8 ounces of water. I then added a little over 1/4 of a teaspoon of regular table salt. I did the following over the kitchen sink.

I turned my head so that my left ear was facing the floor. Then, I slowly poured the salt water into my right nostril and let it flow out of the left nostril into the kitchen sink. When the measuring cup was empty I stopped.

I would then place my finger on the left side of my nose and close the left nostril and rather forcefully blow excess water out of my right nostril into the sink. Then, I did the same with the other nostril. I then went to the bathroom and used toilet tissue to clean the excess moisture from the nostrils.

I did this every evening. After a few days I looked into the nostril again with the small flashlight and the polyp was gone. I was surprised and delighted.

I have continued to do this nasal cleansing almost every day since. I haven't had a nasal polyp since that first one. I'm now 64 years old. I also noticed it helped keep my sinuses clear most of the time = better breathing.

I later got what is called a Neti Pot, which a a little pot designed for the purpose of doing a nasal irrigation. The cheap plastic ones work for me. Most health food stores have them. I noticed over time that the first couple of hours after doing a nasal irrigation, my nostrils tend to be a little dry. After a couple hours they moisten back up. That's why I do the nasal cleanse at least 2 hours before going to bed. This allows the nostrils time to moisten before bed = better breathing.

A couple details:

1. I found it better to stop the cleanse just before the cup was empty. I pinch my nose so as to retain some of the saltwater in the sinuses. Then, I keep the nose pinched and bend down with the top of my head pointing towards the floor to the count of 20. Then, I keep the nostrils pinched and stand up straight and tilt my head back (when the head is tiled back you can stop pinching the nose and the water will not drain out). I would keep that position to the count of 20. Then I would blow out the excess water. This seems to allow the saltwater to get deeper into the sinus cavity.

2. If, after the first cleanse, my sinus cavity still feels a little stuffy, I'll do a second nasal irrigation (I don't have to do this very often). With practice I became more aware of when my sinus cavities were clear or not.

3. One day I forgot to put the salt into the warm water. When I started the cleanse my nostrils felt really irritated and sore. I stopped and added the salt. When I continued with the nasal cleanse the saltwater was soothing. This is how I discovered how salt is soothing to irritated skin and how water alone can be irritating to sensitive tissue.

Hi Julie - I use a saline rinse in a neti pot (just a baking soda and kosher salt mixture) and found that, although it helped my sinus problems, it really dried out my nose. I've started adding a couple of drops of food-grade glycerin (found in the health food stores) to the neti pot. It really helped. Then, throughout the day, I just put a tiny amount of coconut oil in each nostril to keep it moist (the air in Calgary is extremely dry). It's made a world of difference. Good luck!

Bloodroot
Posted by Amanda (Coloma, Michigan) on 11/10/2010

In reference to bloodroot, you must look into the following books:Back to Eden" by Jethro Kloss- one of the best and most reliable books on herbal usage available. It has also much information about food, nutrition, exercise, it also has the botanical names of plants, which is very important. It has information on blood root.

"The way of Herbs" by Michael Tierra. Another very extensive and also talks about blood root.

Well, truth of the matter of it is that bloodroot certainly does work for everything from nose polyps to using it as an ink or dye for clothes. It can be used as an emetic, a stimulate, and as a topical application for pain. Now, when you go to look for it on the Internet, it will probably be expensive. But the truth of the matter is that it grows wild near ponds and similar water ways. It is literally littered all over the nearby woods along the river banks and ponds. I recommend to save yourself some money and also increase your intelligence, get a book with colored pictures for wild flowers and fauna of north America and go out and find some. It should be gathered in the early spring. But, please do get these books, they are wonderful and the authors know what they're talking about which means you are in safe hands taking their instruction, of course if you ask the doctor he'd rather cut into your face than admit an herb ( a natural gift from our Creator) would work. In truth, nutrition, herbs and exercise along with a constructive interest( such as natural medicine) are all you need to cure anything from a sore throat to skin cancer and even aids and syphilis. So, good luck! And remember, let's use all that has been given to use to keep us on the right track.

Dear Mama to Many,

Good afternoon, trust my email finds you well. Been a while since we last chatted in Sept.

Its been a good 4-5 months up until now. The polyps have started to cause issues again. Although this time thankfully the mucosal thickening isn't there but there is congestion like its waiting to be released. There has been anosmia again since 8 days now, just traces of smell in between. Ive restarted the castor oil and TTO oil mix for over 8 days now but waiting for it to fully show results.

Ive ordered for essiac tea as well, and will be hunting for dandelion leaves too as ive read that it can really help with polyps. Read that green tea also helps to shrink them and have started that too. Whats your view on basil leaves? And can basil oil with steam inhalation help? I didnt call for serrapeptase yet but dont know much about it too. Is it a natural remedy Mama to Many?

Any suggestions from your side? Really tired of just surfing for information on this condition, need to cure it now.

Seeking urgent help for natural cure of Nasal Polyps which ive been suffering from for the last 1.5 years. Ive had bouts of healing like a good 2-3 months but when it goes bad it really is unnerving. Ive been doing horsearadish honey mixture last three days. Stings the sinuses like crazy but not seen a major difference. Ive been putting a mixture of castor oil (1tsp) and tea tree oil (5 drops) in the morning and night before sleeping. Started with a mixture of ACV (2tsp) and natural honey (1tsp) in a cup of warm water since last night. Took it today morning too on empty stomach.

To be honest ive had bouts of smell in parts since last 6 days of starting the natural therapies, comes and goes but the gaps are very big. But it is still a blessing after 3 weeks of anosmia 😓. My ENT did a scan and said surgery is needed as the sinuses are infected too. I am against surgery and so is my homeopath who is also working on meds for me. Today morning the nasal inhaler I use which has eucalyptus oil opened a little and my trouser started to smell of eucalyptus oil. My colleague asked me, "have you applied a muscle spray or something?" I said yes tearfully that I have a backache and its a eucalyptus oil based muscle relacant gel. I'm in tears as I write this now 😫😓..please please please friends.....plzzzz suggest how to cure this. I am at an absolute end of fatigue with this now.

No, no one told me anything. I am at my wit's end, as you are. I am going to an ENT specialist in June and I'm sure I'll have to get them removed, which I don't want to go through either. A month ago, I had to go on an antibiotic due to a sore throat and infection I had trouble fighting on my own. Almost immediately, the polyps shrunk and I was able to breathe. It was like a miracle. But of course that didn't last once I finished the pills. I am fed up with doctors either not knowing anything about these horrendous things or not telling us how to get rid of them without surgery. I just cannot believe there is no cure for this nonsense. It is so irritating!!!

I would try to avoid surgery at all costs. I lost my sense of smell, and therefore taste, of course, about 7 years ago due to sinus polyps. The only time I can smell is when I have to take steroids for an asthma flare, or if there are residual effects from a steroid joint injection. The only time I feel decent is when I'm taking steroids, so I must be a flaming blob of inflammation. I had the surgery about 5 years ago and the polyps came back in full force a depressingly short time later. The ENT doc (whom I equate with a used car salesman now) told me I would have to use steroid drops for the rest of my life. I tried that for a year, but they did nothing so I stopped. They can't reach my sinuses and I can't stand on my head to take them. I'm not sure what exactly is causing them. It's probably mold or allergies. I'm thinking of bracing myself and trying diet. I'm spineless when it comes to sugar, so before I try diet I'm wondering about one of the salt inhalers I've seen that supposedly work wonders for asthma. Has anyone tried that?

Posted by Mari (Va) on 08/09/2015

Just found this site.

Was dx w/nasal polyp several weeks ago. I was having nose bleeds and didn't know why, so I went to the ENT who used the endoscope and then sent me for a scan. Left nostril is blocked in back. He Rx steroids, which I cannot take, since I have a reaction to them. He wants to do surgery of course, but I also have a problem w/anesthesia, and he wouldn't do it w/a local. He said they are caused by fungus... he is the same dr who years ago told me that nail fungus, dandruff and candida are caused by the same fungi.

I don't have colds but do have sinus problems often, and for years I have had a problem w/my ears feeling blocked, and not one Dr.has been able to explain that...no fluid behind the ear drum. I have resorted to using hearing aids, but guess what..I don't hear any better w/them than w/o. Till today, I knew of no one else that had that blocked ear feeling, so I am happy to have found this site just to know I am not alone.

I was looking to see if Tea Tree Oil or Colloidal Silver would be a solution, and and happy to see that some of you have tried them and had good results. I also know that when I eat "junk" my sinuses are worse. I love my dairy, and don't really care for the substitute "milks"... have a sensitivity to the casein protein. Even when I gave up coffee and the occasional glass of wine the sinuses did not clear up... so it is back to eating better... someone mentioned eating citrus "acid food" it is not the food being acid that is the problem, it is the "ash" that is created when the food is burned for energy... citrus has alkaline ash.. meats are very acidic...turkey is okay. I will get back on track w/food and try the tea tree oil/CS combo in my little nasal spray bottle.. dislike the Neti pot... feel as if I am drowning when I use it.

Thanks for sharing your comments.. made me feel better that I was on the right track.

I've had nasal polyps and had the surgery to have them removed and the polyps came back. Of course I took steriods and they are gone again. I am going to try the B Vitamins. Did you lose your sense of smell? I would like to know how to get my sense of smell back. Please advise if you know how I can get my sense of smell back.

Over the years, at various times, I have lost my sense of smell from 3 different causes: (1) nasal polyps, (2) congestion from migraine swelling, and (3) zinc deficiency. So, the cure would depend on the cause... By the way, when I get migraine swelling, I do NOT get a headache, instead I get nasal and sinus swelling. When had a zinc deficiency, I took a fairly low dose of 15 mg and took it with food. Otherwise, zinc on an empty stomache can give one a terrible belly ache!

How can I eliminate all sugars from my diet?

Salt, Baking Soda, Black Seed Oil

Hello, I had nasal polyps for 2 years now with no sense of smell or taste, got surgery with no luck. I didn't try eliminating sugar, but I don't really have a sweet tooth. My problem started when I started painting cars with no mask on somtimes, the fumes were starting to burn my nose and stayed stuck.

I started rinsing my nose with 1/4 teaspoon salt, 1/4 teaspoon baking soda, and a drop or two of Black seed oil but if more it burns, all in warm distilled water.

With God's help I started to smell and taste after two or three weeks. But now I stopped smelling and tasting because I stopped after month and a half I got lazy mixing and warming up the distilled water.

Wish you good luck.

If your nasal polyps are swollen or inflamed due to infection etc, a temprorary relief to this is to crush ICE force it up your nose compacting the polyps :-) I had one the size of a marble in my right nostril for last 2/3 weeks Ice has reduced it considerably. I can actually breathe in an out of that nostril today for the first time in weeks, sadly its probably only temprorary , the first time I used the Ice was last night was amazed to wake this morning swelling gone right down , give it a try it costs nothing spread out a tissues or cloth on table lean ur head forward the ice will will obviously melt on to the cloth.. I'm going out to try another ICE session now ...

Colloidal Silver

Yes, I have found Colloidal Silver to be the absolute best thing for my constantly runny nose, and post nasal drip. I have suffered this for more years than I can remember. I don't know about polyps though. I am a blood type O. I use a bottle that has a nasal saline spray in it, and empty it.

Just read most of the comments about Polyps, I think most of the comments were excellent, I think David from Fountain Inn had it pretty well spot on, also some of the remedys might work for some and not others as other people have already said and I have just found out that we have a immune system slightly different from other people and its the reason we get the problems that we have, I have had sinus problems for as long as I can remember, the other day my ears were so bad I went to see the ENT Dr, My daughter said why not check your nose at the same time I thought why not long time since last check, she discoverd a large Polyp in the right side two smaller ones left side, I'm on loads of medication which works (I can smell and taste food now) strange that most people seem to have large one right side, also I would like to say I'm a great beliver in Castor oil and ACV, so when med stops salt bath and some of the others, all the best to every one.

Exactly how do I go about this CS nasal treatment? Do I mix the CS with xylitol or water? Is your procedure similar to sinus flooding? What if I do not make my own CS, which one is best to buy?
