Avoid Cold to the Head

I have a strange problem I've never heard of before. I have noticed that whenever just below the crown of my head becomes cold (about 5 inches below the crown) I get a bad Sinusitis attack! This cold sinus attack can come on with the air conditioner on, very cold weather, or walking in a store that is too cold! To stop the attack I simply have to cover my head with a warm cap or I can get relief by using a blow dryer aimed at the back of my head, face and neck area! But definitely my head becoming cold will start a Sinusitis attack! If I use a hat or warm knit cap during cold weather I usually don't have to use benadryl to help my sinusitis attack! I hope this helps someone.

I snorted a pinch of pepper in both nostrils. BHAM! Within five minutes a lot of mucous was spitted and felt better than even post neti.

Thanks, this was useful for me in the first try. Will keep share the long term effect in my next update.

Note: Mine was a chronic sinus (thick mucous, post nasal drip kind) over 3 decades. Am also experimenting the use of AUM breathing. It is also helping.

I just wanted to share my Sinuisitis tip with Sinusitis Sufferers -something that helped me stop my Sinusitis attacks!

I found that one of the triggers for my sinusitis attacks was a part of my head getting COLD. The part on me was just below the Crown of my head on the back of my head. If that spot gets cold this will activate a severe Sinusitis Attack! This includes an acid type liquid that seeps down my upper nose and burns all the way down to my upper chest! It's a horrible and painful attack! Like hot chili coming down my sinuses into my upper chest!

I was sick almost all the time until I found this trigger! I used to wonder why I got Sinusitis attacks in summer? It was due to the cold air of the Air Conditioner! Causing the back of my head to become cold! If I put on a warm cap this will stop my Sinusitis attack! Even going into a cold store will cause me a Sinusitis attack if I'm not wearing a warm cap.

It took me years to discover this was happening. A blow dryer to the head, face, and neck will also stop my Sinusitis attack. I hope this information helps people with my particular health problem.

Thanks Rita

Apple Cider Vinegar

I have had problems with chronic sinus infections, had sinus surgery which did no good and tubes put in both ears. My doctors had me on round after round of some very serious antibiotics, erythromycin which gave me yeast infections and diarrhea; clindamycin while I was pregnant which carries a pregnancy warning; and doxycycline which had me so sun sensitive, I could not even walk out to the mailbox without using sunscreen. After reading that most sinus infections are caused by viruses, I wondered why those doctors kept prescribing antibiotics without even doing a culture. Now 20 years later my normal flora is resistant to several different antibiotics now. So I don't take them and I don't dare go to a doctor with a sinus infection. I just got a new infection right before Christmas. I got over it, but when I went back to the elementary school where I tutor, I caught something else from the kids that went right straight to my sinuses.

I'm currently using saline rinses and drinking lots of ACV+honey. I also use a Vick's personal steam inhaler with menthol/eucolyptus pads in it and breathing steam throughout the day. I'm taking Turmeric capsules as directed on the bottle. Now I'm going to try the ACV nasal rinse.

Food Allergies
Posted by Kayla (Hawaii) on 10/18/2015

A few thing I've learned from my ND. Some people are allergic to things even though the scratch allergy tests indicates they are not, so the best and safest bet is to get on gluten free, dairy free, sugar free, soy free diet I was put on an elimination diet that really clearly showed me what I was having an allergic reaction too. Everyone is different, anything you eat, smell, touch or breathe in can cause an allergy.

It's important to highlight that sometimes chronic sinusitis is a result of weak adrenals in particular the case of adrenal fatigue. I myself had a blocked nose because of this. I started taking an adrenal health supplement and within days I could breath and no longer use my steroid nasal spray. Not many people know about this link. Just putting it out there for anyone who has tried everything and had no results.

Coconut oil for sinus relief:

I melted 1 tablespoon of cold pressed virgin coconut oil and added it to the warm water and salt in my "nasal irrigation kit". The coconut oil came out of the bottle last and I have a pleasant aroma every time I breathe in through my now clear nostrils. I also ate a tablespoon and gave the dogs some too, they love it.

Whiskey

I have suffered from chronic sinusitis since 2001. I have found little relief from the medical community. Surprisingly over the counter benadryl has worked better for me than prescriptions doctors have written for me as does Tussin/Robitussin for mucus. It is a must that I don't allow my head to become cold! Cold temperatures will cause a sinus attack on me so I use a warm cap on my head during cold days.

My husband recently came down with a sore throat so bad that he bought some Whiskey to drink for the pain. (we are non-drinkers) He told me that a small amount of the Whiskey helped his throat and asked me to try it. Well I'm glad I did as just a few drops down my throat caused a slight burning sensation and to my surprise the warmth of the Whiskey traveled up my ear canals-- soothing and slightly burning them--and the sinus problem stopped bothering me! A nurse friend thinks the Whiskey killed bacteria! I have felt back to normal for 4 days now! I only use about 6 drops of the Whiskey or half a cap-ful. Slowly allow the drops to go down the throat. I thought I would share this with people that suffer from Sinusitis. I hope it helps them like it did me. Mind you the sinusitis is not gone but I feel normal again.

WARNING!

I agree - do not EVER take Levaquin or any Flouroquinoline antibiotic - ever!! I had a terrifying reaction and a holistic doctor cured me, but I was in agonizing pain in my arms and legs. Glutahione drips will definitely help it get out of your system, as the above poster stated. But do not ever take it to begin with and LEAVE your doctor ASAP if he/she is stupid enough to put your life in danger and give you this drug!

Fungal and Bacterial Sinusitis Remedies

REMEDY FOR STOPPING COUGHING DUE TO EXCESS MUCOUS AND FOR CURING FUNGAL AND BACTERIAL SINUSITIS

I was plagued with fungal and bacterial sinusitis. I went to 13 doctors, had three sinus surgeries and tried 25 medications plus acupuncture, homeopathy, herbs and other treatments and nothing worked. I did a lot of research about other options and came up with this mixture, which works for me and has worked for many other people. My allergist recommends it to some of his patients and has had good results with about 55% of the people that used it. It did not help some people at all. I have had some flare ups of fungus and bacteria but the mixture seems at least at this point to get rid of them. A very helpful website in my research was Earth Clinic.

An allergist and the head ear, nose and throat doctor from Stanford hospital, Dr. Huang, approved this mixture. Make sure you get the input of your doctor before using it since there maybe some condition in your sinuses that will be problematic for this mixture. You will probably get a reaction from most doctors like I got which was, "it won't hurt you but it won't help you either." They were so wrong!

You will need a large size Neilmed bottle. You can buy this bottle at drug and health food stores or find them on the Internet. Do not use any other brand or a Netti pot. They don't work as well. The Neilmed packets that come with the bottle are not extra strength. You have to order these from the Neilmed company. You need to use water that has no impurities in it. I was told by an Immunologist that the Dasani bottled water is the purest you can get. Do not use tap water. It has too many things in it. First, put the water in the Neilmed then add all ingredients and warm it up in a microwave for 40 ? 45 seconds before using. This may be too warm for some people so adjust accordingly but warm it up as much as possible. This helps with absorption.

You can get a measuring cup at a drug store with ccs on it for these ingredients.

*3 ccs of Braggs Organic Apple Cider Vinegar. Shake well. If you can't get this brand, get a high quality brand that says on the label that it has "mother" in it.

*5ccs of Kyolic brand aged garlic extract. Keep refrigerated after opening.

*12 drops of Nutribiotic brand grapefruit seed extract. Doesn't require refrigeration.

*3ccs of Hydrogen Peroxide

One extra strength Neilmed packet.

One Budesonide capsule (prescription medication). The mixture seemed to work well for some people without this ingredient, but I use it to keep polyps from forming.

The ingredients with an asterisk can be purchased at health food stores. These apple cider, garlic and grapefruit seed extract brands are high quality brands that may cost more than others but they work and are worth it. I strongly suggest you do not use cheaper products if you can afford it.

After its warm, shake gently to mix up the ingredients. Squirt it in your nostrils following the instructions that come with the Neilmed bottle. This combination may give some people a burning sensation and/or cause more mucous production. If this happens, first slightly reduce the apple cider vinegar amount and if that isn't enough then slightly reduce the levels hydrogen peroxide and then grapefruit seed extract. It may take a while experimenting to find the amount of the ingredients you can tolerate. You want to use as much as you can tolerate. Your tolerance may increase over time. It takes some getting used to and if you cut back too much or too soon, it won't work. But you don't want to irritate your sinuses to the point that they produce mucous. If you over do the ingredients your sinuses will get irritated and produce a lot of mucous.

Do not use this mixture in your nose after swimming or any activity that gets chemicals in the nose (like a nebulizer with a facemask) because it will irritate the sinuses and cause mucous. Wait four hours or more before using the mix. Also it is very important to thoroughly clean the NeilMed with antibacterial soap and water after every use. Put the empty Neilmed in the microwave for 15 seconds to get rid of any bacteria. I was told to get a new Neilmed every three or four months.

You may be surprised at what nasty stuff may come out of your sinuses including chunks of mucous and other disgusting things. The mucous may be all kinds of green and yellow colors and very thick. This is what happens with infections. Eventually the only thing that will come out is the mixture and clear mucous.

This combination used twice a day (two hours before bedtime and first thing in the morning) reduced my coughing over several days. My coughing was eliminated in about two or three weeks. I had been coughing for several years to due postnasal drip that could not be controlled except if I took a lot of medication to dry out my sinuses. Getting rid of the bacterial and fungal infections may take more time and require the use of other medications. In my situation, medications alone did not get rid of the bacterial and fungal infections completely. My last surgery reduced the degree of bacterial and fungal infection and maybe that is why the mixture worked. I'm not sure but eventually I stopped all the antibiotic and other meds with my doctor's permission and then I used of this solution got rid of those problems. It took about a month of twice a day use of the mixture to get rid of the fungus and bacteria completely. I've had a couple of minor bacteria and fungus flare ups over three years but they went away. You can tell because you feel stuffy and the color and consistency of the mucous changes. When I had those, I would flush an extra time in the middle of the day with only water and the Neilmed packet. In a few days I got back to normal. I continued to use the mix twice a day to keep the problem from coming back. Now after about a year I don't do it every day unless I feel something is going on in my sinuses. I have had a complete recovery. I hope this information helps you too.

Probiotics

Hi Sophia,

The probiotic that is specifically thought to help with gum disease, sinus problems and upper respiratory infections is one containing BLIS K12 and BLIS M18. This is the only place I have been able to find this product:

https://www.carotec.com/product/Carotecs-Oral-Probiotic-BlisK12_M18-30lozenges/probiotic

A different probiotic that contains only L. reuteri is one used for heart health and can be found as the only ingredient in Life Extension FlorAssist Heart Health Probiotic.

Best wishes!

Milk of Magnesia

BETTER BUT WITH SIDE EFFECTS

I put milk of magnesia diluted in distilled water in my neti bottle and irrigated my nasal passages. It stung a bit and let a kind of weird smell that gave me a bit of a headache but after I rinsed my nose with pure water it subsided after 10-15 minutes. I think my nasal passages were a bit more clearly. If I do this again I think I'll just use a q-tip and swab some MoM in my nasal passages lightly instead of using the neti bottle. But it makes sense that chronic congestion might be fungus, especially if one has problems with candida. Of course modern doctors just told me I'm allergic to dust. Maybe this is what makes it hard to fly on a pane, the constant congestion makes it hard to clear my ears and I get pain when the plane lands (barotrauma). I did read a few people regularly using a saline solution in the neti pots were able to clear the congestion and fly with less pain. I also read another case when a person stopped dairy and was able to fly pain free too. Dairy is in so much though and even I cut it down there's still congestion.

Acupressure, Nasal Rinse

Diane C.,

Thank you so much for sharing your methods of treatment!

After having been diagnosed with sinusitis, I've found a similar satisfaction and relief in having performed nasal rinses (with the type of neti pot that is able to be squeezed, and thus, used to control the force of sterilized saline) every other day.

I discovered I suffer from food allergies, namely to wheat and dairy. I ditched standard allergy medication and opted for a natural approach. Though I've changed my entire diet to a gluten-free, dairy-free, fully-hydrated, organic lifestyle, I still find the need to use the neti pot to clear my sinuses. Even with the use of herbs and apple cider vinegar (with the mother), it's as though they cannot drain on their own. Maybe it's just my body's composition, but if this information can help someone like myself, I want to give back what the Earth Clinic community has offered to me.

In addition to my success with the sinus rinse and dietary changes, simply one session of acupuncture had helped restore the circulation in my lower back, and I noticed better blood flow throughout my body.

Do it! It's totally worth it. I can't say I am willing to receive acupuncture on a regular basis (as it's not covered by my insurance, and I don't consider it a necessity in my monthly budget), but it is very well worth it when I choose to visit a practitioner.

Good luck with everything, all! If you find you cannot afford even the most inexpensive forms of treatment, prioritize and cut back on something extraneous. I ditched cable, internet, unnecessary foods and luxuries, and I'm so much happier for it! My body feels great, and my mind is freer and more independent, as it's not chained to the advertising-ridden filth on T.V. Enjoy your life- we only have one chance to get it right (unless you believe in reincarnation). :) Have fun, treat yourself right, stay active in mind and body, and remain positive.

I have had chronic sinusitis for years now - years!! I thought it would never go away and was completely miserable until I read on the internet how Niacinimide (B3) can kill candida. I suspected all along that my sinus problems were yeast related. I started taking the Niacinimide about 5 days ago and right now I'd say I'm about 98% clear already!! I estimate that in another couple of days I should be cured of this nightmare! I started out taking 100mg 3X a day and now I'm up to 300mg 3X a day. I'll probably go up a little more and then get a maintenance dose. I would think Niacinimide would help all types of sinus issues. A MUST TRY!!! Good luck out there! Remember, it's Niacinimide, not Niacin!

Strengthen Digestive System
Posted by Sam (Miami, FL) on 09/06/2014

Many of the sinus problems experienced today have their root in the digestive system, especially the stomach and upper small intestine which directly receives partially-digested food from the stomach. This digestive problem is described more specifically as a weakness in the digestive fire; in Ayurvedic terminology (3), the problem is manda agni: dampened ability to transform and metabolize. Why is this a problem in relation to the sinuses? Because the food is not as quickly and as thoroughly digested as it should be, leading to production of byproducts that affect the sinuses. An important step in remedying the chronic sinus disorder is external oeliation, or, more simply, oil massage.

A key to ultimately eliminating the problem of sinus congestion is to invigorate the jathar agni. The total treatment for the sinus problem is to increase the digestive fire.

So many people have said they got some quote off your site that I am making time to join up and help. If you don't want to ever get a sinus infection again, make sure that you don't ingest anything from a cow. The IGF-1, a growth factor, is only present in cow's products (not from a goat, yak, buffalo, sheep, etc.) and it breeds viruses, bacteria, and parasites. I am into prevention, not just treatment, and getting rid of cow's products will rid you of worry about breast, prostate, and endometrial cancers, as well as diabetes and ear infections. You don't get ANY usable calcium from the dairy - all you get is pus and ecoli, salmonella and other unpleasant creatures that lead to infection, in fact in all the nations where the occupants use the most dairy, the rates of osteoporosis are the highest in the world. I am certified in Plant Based Nutrition by GWU Medical Center in DC ("Dr. Neal Barnards Methods for Reversing Diabetes", Dr. Gabriel Cousens, "There is a Cure for Diabetes", eCornell with Dr. T. Colin Campbell "China Study", Pam Popper "Wellness Forum", Caldwell Esselstyn, Cleveland Clinic's "How to Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease", and I teach the cure for diabetes as directed by Drs. Rose Hips powder has been the answer to my chronic sinusitis. If you take the powder, make sure to get an organic brand and start slow - like 1/4 teaspoon. Build up to a higher dose you are comfortable. Keeps me up if I take too much, but that could just be me. I have an extremely sensitive system. Anyway, rose hips has totally cured the wretched sinusitis I've had for years already! I did get a little more stuffy the first few days - I guess it was a detox reaction. For me, I took pure Rose Hip powder alone - no added vitamin C or anything else. Rose hips powder is must try for sinus problems!! I can't emphasize that enough!

Hello Gigi,

Re: Sinusitis condition / AC Vinegar

The ACV as a diluted rinse or irrigation can act as an anti fungal/anti viral so might solve the problem. Some people get sinus help by just diluting one or two tablespoons in a glass of water and consuming over a few days, twice daily and in a week or so, the condition is better.

But if the ACV doesn't help, I'd assume I had a long running sinus INFECTION that needed a stronger solution in the sinus cavities. I use Colloidal Silver, a high PPM, and use an ear syringe to gently squirt up the sinus passages. It WILL sting if an infection is present. Then when I repeat the procedure ten minutes later, the sting is almost gone. I repeat this two hours later and every two hours until the sinus is clear. In case of a bad infection I have had to stay after it for a month, but that is rare. Usually the infection is gone in the second application of CS. I also squirt into ear canals...as that kills the lingering infection in Eustachian tubes also.

If one has had a long running infection in sinus cavity (many months) I'd assume it is system wide in my body and so would DRINK three tablespoons daily, away from meals and other supplements (especially mineral supplements), five days a week for six months.

Levaquin and Fluoroquinolones can cause tendon rupture and pain that never goes away along with other terrible problems! These medications do have black box warnings! If your doctor prescribes a Flouroquinoline drug to you, he/she is irresponsible and risking your life! These drugs are poisons that can be lethal and need to be taken off the market ASAP before they do more irrepairable damage to people! There are tons of message boards online filled with people who have lost their health and are incapacitated because of drugs like Levaquin in the Flouroquinoline family.

Candy Sugar - it's just sucrose (sugar) of that much I am sure. I'm guessing use 10-15 teaspoons of sugar would be fine.

Tulsi (Ocimum tenuiflorum) - I had to look it up, the common name for this is Holy Basil.

Tea for Sinusitis/Sinus Infections

On my tiresome quest to find a cure to end my sinus congestion issues, I discovered that tea is the cure! All sorts of tea have completely cleared up my sinuses - Raspberry tea, Lemon Balm tea, and Hyssop tea are my top contenders for clearing effects. You have to drink A LOT of it - like 4 cups 3-4 times a day! I typically put 4 tea bags in a tall glass and drink all at once, then repeat that 2 or three times. Ideally, you should order the organic version in bulk loose and put 1 or 2 tea balls into a large glass. Let the tea soak for about half an hour so that it's strong. I don't know what it is in tea that has this clearing affect, but it WORKS!!

Quick note: the first couple of days you may go through a detox and feel more congested. Don't worry! That's just detox and the tea (unless of course you are having a real allergic reaction) is just clearing stuff out!

Earlier while I was searching on EC I was drinking apple cruder vinegar, honey, and ginger. That made me feel better too. Going to get some more now. THANKS FOR YOUR POST.

Mmsg Your Grandmother was wise!

I wish someone had told me this about the cold and the head!

I was ill from my sinuses for about 10 years and not one doctor could help me. I had ACID coming down the sinuses! I believe this acid type liquid was coming from my head, at least the head was throbbing at the very top when I had the attacks. Most people says that is not possible? I think it is!

It is awful to be on your own with a bad medical condition!

Isn't is strange that the Medical community insists that cold does not harm us? It does! At least some people are badly affected by the cold.

I have lived in Sunny California all of my life but cold drinks in the freezer devastated my life. I would forget about the drink I had in the freezer and when I drank the drink it was colder than having ice cubes in them! Not Good!

A cold head starts off sinus problems!

I was having all sorts of trouble with sinusitis and found that benadryl works better than any prescription I was given by doctors for sinusitis! And it is over the counter medication and inexpensive. Two tablets can make you drowsy! Don't drive or operate machinery while taking them. And most important DON'T ALLOW YOUR HEAD TO GET COLD!

I wear a double cap at night because if my head gets cold I will get a sinus attack and this leaves me very weak the next day!

Sinusitis attacks can weaken you. Use a blow dryer to warm your head and neck area if you are cold. This routine has me nearly well from Sinusitis!

I believe my sinus problems started by me foolishly placing drinks (of any kind) in the freezer and drinking freezing drinks down. Just my take. This coldness seemed to start my sinus problems off.

Hello, I have been suffering from the same symptoms for 4 years.

I chop up small and equal parts of, white onion, ginger, horseradish, garlic and jalapenos. I place in equal parts into a mason jar and fill the jar with organic apple cider vinegar. Place it in a dark area and shake everyday for 14 days. In 14 days, drain the liquid into another glass jar and keep it in a dark place. I take a table spoon each day and I have not been sick in a long time! :)

The liquid will not go bad, and you can use the pieces for soups etc. It can be kept in the fridge for a week or two.

ACV is apple cider vinegar, you should be able to find this in any grocery store. It is recommended that you use unpasturized vinegar that has a residue called the 'mother' in it--you can see a brown sediment in it. The honey is also regular honey that you can find in the grocery store. It, too, is recommended to use the unpasturized kind. If you cannot find any that is not pasturized and filtered, use what you can find.
