Konjac Mannan

I struggled with IBS type symptoms for 6 months following a c. Diff infection. I tried almost every natural remedy on this site with no luck. Within one day of starting Konjac-mannan, I had a noticable improvement in after meal bloating and distension. My bowels returned to almost normal after alternating between diarrhea and constipation. I read that it helps normalize bacteria in the gut so maybe that's why it helped me. To me it's been a miracle cure.
L-Glutamine

I go to Dr. Frackelton in Westlake, Ohio for cancer prevention. (I already had it once) I have suffered from spastic colon off and on for years. I was really in pain one time when I went for my routine blood work and mentioned it to him. He said, "I know what will fix you up right now. " He told me to take 1 tsp of l-glutamine 3 times a day. I had been suffering with this for 4 weeks. I had already gone to my regular doctor who prescribed a medicine that did give me some relief from the pain. I quit taking that medicine the day before I went to see Dr. Frackelton. I took the l-glutamine later after I got home. I was taking my third teaspoon of it when I realized that I was fine!!! It worked that fast. When Dr. Frackelton told me it would fix me up right now, he was right! The l-glutamine really worked. I hope this helps someone.
L-Glutamine

A natural doctor recommended the powdered supplement l-glutamine for my IBS. He said to take 5g(1 teaspoon) twice a day with juice or water but don't take it with protein at the same time because it will lesson the effect. It works! I have had far fewer attacks. It is inexpensive and easy to find because weightlifters also use it for muscle building benefits.

True. Glutamine works in 2 ways. First, it is the preferred source of fuel for enterocytes- the cells that line the small intestine. Second, it increases sIgA (secretory immunoglobulin A), an important immune cell. If the IBS is caused by an infection such as yeast or parasites, Glutamine will be helpful. However, symptomatic relief from glutamine should make you consider testing for parasites- but not through conventional labs such as Quest or Labcorp. The best lab I've found and use with all of my patients is Metametrix. -Dr. Andrew Brandeis
L-Lysine

I've suffered from IBS for over a year and tried various remedies without success. I read an article on the internet that stated taking L-Lysine tablets could help cure IBS. I started taking one tablet (500mg) each day on an empty stomach. I noticed an improvement within a week and now two weeks later all symptoms of IBS have disappeared. I mentioned this to the owner at my local health store but she was adamant that L-Lysine would not ease IBS symptoms. I feel totally free of all the symptoms that I have suffered with over the past year so would suggest to any IBS suffers just to try L-Lysine for a month in hope that it works for you. Good luck.

This fits in with the virus theories above. Lysine used to increase the lysine/arginine ratio to discourage virus replication.
Lemon Juice

I have suffered intestinal problems for years finally diagnosed by a 'functional' doctor as dairy intolerance. A friend finally convinced me to try taking straight lemon juice from two smaller, greener lemons from Mexico and it has cured my problem almost immediately. Apparently I also cannot handle soy as I had a bad reaction to Chinese food. I have been treated by normal MDs and none have ever diagnosed this dairy intolerance, they only treated the symptoms and never identified the cause.
Lemon Juice, Buttermilk, Calcium

Fresh Squeezed Lemon Juice and Buttermilk Cure.
I've been in agony trying to find a cure for this new malady called IBS. I've been reading what the subcribers here have tried and I was willing to try anything. I have IBS-D. I read about Molasses, Buttermilk, Royal Jelly and I went to the store to purchase these items to try and see if something would work. That day I was only able to find buttermilk, the Organic kind. I was skeptical but I tried it with ____ [600 mg calcium tablet] at bedtime. The next day I woke up prepared to battle the many washroom runs I'd have and try not to look too conspicuous during my marathon leaps to get there. Funny thing, it didn't happen; I was OK however, I did have irritation and sometimes urges that were nothing but still I couldn't be too sure and I'd wind up sprinting for the washroom just in case. After a month of Buttermilk in the evening with the calcium and still feeling irritations, one evening I was so thirsty; water wasn't something I wanted. I spotted a lemon, squeezed it, added a little sugar and bottled water and drank like a camel. The next day there was no irritation but I did not make the connection right away; I thought it was most likely a food item, a trigger, that I had NOT ingested. That evening and several evenings after that, I continued drinking fresh Lemon Water and I think it's the cure. I've been fine ever since...no irritation, no D or C....I'm fine!
Lemon Water

I have had IBS for over a year now and after trying everything that the doctors and friends and family told me to try, nothing worked. Until I finally tried Lemon water. I squeeze Half of a lemon into a 8oz glass of water and drink it over an hour hour or two. If you drink it too fast you are likely to get heart burn. But after two days of drinking this once a day I was regular and no longer felt bloated or constipated all the time. Good luck and I hope it works for you.

Magnesium

After viewing reader comments on your web site, I tried magnesium oxide to relieve IBS with constipation. My doctor had prescribed Zelnorm twice a day, and I had used it for three years. It worked quite well, but I was having to live my life around scheduling my medication and meals so the Zelnorm would be effective. If I didn't allow one hour after taking it before I ate a meal, the constipation along with bloating and nausea would return. I just couldn't see living the rest of my life like that. Not to mention the expense of taking a one-of-a-kind drug. Then while researching IBS with constipation, I noticed your web site. I began taking 250 mg magnesium oxide on an empty stomach first thing when I awaken each morning. By the time I'm ready for breakfast, it has had its desired effect. Thanks so much! I am so appreciative of the help I found.

I have IBS with a tendency toward diarrhea. I can't take supplemental mag. at all because it makes me worse. I try to get my magnesium from the foods I eat.
What has really helped me is a gluten-free diet. It takes 4 to 6 weeks to know whether it will help, so be patient. The other thing that has helped is powdered l-glutamine, about a heaping teaspoon mixed in water every day. It's well known as a bowel healer. Powdered vitamin-C can help too but start out slowly because too much can cause diarrhea.
I have learned to avoid what I know bothers me. At the top of this list are pain relievers (both prescription and OTC), alcohol, milk, horseradish, garlic and raw onion. I have also learned that adding fiber to the diet can make me worse, particularly commercial fiber preparations. I stick with half an apple, a little brown rice, or a very small serving of beans when I need fiber, and I don't eat them every day.
Magnesium Chloride
Hello everyone,
I am writing regarding what I believe is an IBS problem that I developed around 5 years ago, when going through a stressful situation. I was severely constipated for a few months and began noticing the presence of mucus in my stools (until then I never noticed anything of this kind).
Although I have manage to improve a lot my condition, and rarely suffer from acute pain nowadays, I still tend to get constipated when there is a change in my routine or when I am feeling stressed.
What helps me best to "go" in the morning is one or two teaspoons of ascorbic acid mixed with bicarbonated sodium.
On the other hand, the only thing that has helped regarding the presence of mucus in the stool is when I take one teaspoon of magnesium chloride with water first thing in the morning, but it is not as effective as the ascorbic acid + baking soda for my constipation. When I discontinued the use of magnesium chloride and started taking the ascorbic acid again in the morning, the presence of mucus returned.
I read conflicting views regarding the use of bicarbonated sodim so I am uncertain if I should continue taking it, or if it s best to opt for the magnesium chloride. Just wondering if anyone had the same result with the magnesium chloride or has any thoughts regarding this issue.
Apart from this I am healthy, eat a balanced diet and so on.
Many thanks! Leila

Hi, Leila,
Your complaint seems to be IBS with D and mucus in the stools, and you're using magnesium chloride orally to try to clear the mucus. I hope that's working for you and that you're feeling better.
I'm writing about another aspect of IBS – chronic bowel spasticity. Low magnesium levels can contribute to this spasticity. If magnesium levels are low, TRANSDERMAL magnesium chloride oil can relieve the misery of spastic bowels within 20-30 minutes.
To be sure we're on the same page, this is how I would describe spastic bowels. They're contracting constantly and the bowel contents are moving along faster than normal. Transit time is reduced, so the large intestine can't absorb or remove much water from the stool before it is excreted. The stool may be too liquid when passed. A diarrhea-like condition may persist, even after the pathogen that started the diarrhea is long gone. Or, the stool may be solid and just be passed frequently in small amounts. The constant contractions of the bowel may compel the sufferer to run to the bathroom every 15-30 minutes round the clock, even preventing sleep.
Why do the bowels become spastic? Well, calcium is required for muscles to contract, and magnesium is required for muscles to relax. This is true of all muscles -- skeletal muscles, the muscles of the heart and blood vessels, and the smooth muscles such as those of the airway or the digestive tract. Low magnesium levels can prevent the bowels from relaxing.
Oral magnesium supplements are poorly absorbed (we absorb only about 4% of mag oxide taken orally) and can contribute to loose stools. Magnesium taken transdermally (applied to the skin) is better absorbed and doesn't contribute to loose stools. The magnesium ions are taken up by the capillaries under the skin and the whole dose is circulating through the body within 15-20 minutes.
In my case, I had bowel spasticity on and off for 1-1/2 weeks, slowly worsening despite any remedies I tried including oral magnesium, and I was exhausted. Only 20-30 minutes after the first transdermal application of magnesium oil, the spasticity was relieved and NEVER CAME BACK. From this result, I understood that my magnesium levels must have been very low. I decided to apply magnesium oil daily for a month to bring the levels back to normal.
Transdermal magnesium oil WILL NOT kill parasites or other pathogens in the digestive tract; that would have to be dealt with in another way. But it can rescue you from misery forever, if your persistent bowel spasticity is caused by low magnesium levels.
-----
To make your own magnesium oil at home and save money, buy a pound or a kilo of magnesium chloride flakes. I trust the flakes from the ancient Zechstein sea deposits. Other Earth Clinic folks have used flakes from other sources and found them effective. This amount of flakes may last you 6-12 months, depending on how often you apply the magnesium oil. Store the unused flakes in an airtight container. Magnesium chloride is a thirsty salt and will absorb water from the air if left out in the open.
Magnesium oil recipe:
• Fill a drinking glass with magnesium chloride flakes and pour them into a glass bowl.
• Fill the same drinking glass with distilled water and add it to the bowl.
• Stir with a wooden spoon for 5 minutes until the salts are dissolved and the liquid is clear and sparkling.
• Pour the liquid through a funnel into a clean spray bottle; glass is best, but plastic is okay.
Instructions for use:
• Magnesium oil has a bleaching effect on fabric. It's best to apply it to dry skin in the bathroom after a shower but before getting dressed.
• Spray the magnesium oil into your open palm and rub your hands together. Massage the magnesium oil into your skin until it begins to feel dry.
• Repeat until you've applied it to arms, legs, chest and back, a total of about 15-20 squirts. This is a ball park figure; the exact amount isn't important.
• Dress after your skin is completely dry.
• If you have sensitive skin, you can dilute the magnesium oil with up to an equal amount of water, to be better tolerated.
• Most information sources say that low magnesium levels can be corrected with daily application of magnesium oil for about a month. It stands to reason that, if you're diluting the magnesium oil, it may take longer.

Melatonin

This new RCT human study shows that melatonin can be very beneficial in the treatment of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) as discussed here :
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC10131443/
Here are a few relevant quotes from the randomized, double blind, placebo controlled human study :
' Melatonin can be considered an effective treatment for improving IBS score, GI symptoms, and quality of life in IBS patients with and without sleep disorders. It is also effective to improve sleep parameters in IBS patients with sleep disorders. '
' The results of our trial showed that in both groups of patients with and without sleep disorders, receiving melatonin leads to a significant improvement in IBS score and GI symptoms, including the severity and the frequency of abdominal pain, the severity of abdominal bloating, satisfaction with bowel habits, disease's impact on patient's life, and stool consistency'
' In patients with sleep disorders, significant improvement in sleep parameters, including subjective sleep quality, sleep latency, sleep duration, sleep efficiency, and daytime dysfunction, was observed, while in patients without sleep disorders, there was no significant improvement in sleep parameters. In addition, quality-of-life improvement was observed in a significant number of melatonin recipients compared to placebo in both groups of patients. '
Of interest in this study is the fact that they only used a total of 6 mg of melatonin per day in two divided doses of 3 mg each. A fairly simple plan for significant alleviation of IBS. Also of interest in this study was the number of participants, 136, a very good size study.
This is a very significant and important study, given that IBS is one of the world's most common gastrointestinal disorders and current medical treatments are often ineffective.

MSM

My husband and I have had wonderful success for over 6 years taking MSM orally and using MSM topically. We each take a teaspoon daily - about 4 grams. It has stopped irritable bowel syndrome and arthritis and been fantastic help in gum problems (gargle). The gel has reduced scars, insect bites, sunburn and creams are anti-ageing. We are passionate about MSM and will always take and apply it. Results have been so dramatic we started a skin care company.

I hope that I don't sound too stupid here but what is MSM? I have suffered from IBS since I was a little girl but then nobody knew what IBS was, can someone please give me some pointers as to how to get mine under control so I can take my life back, instead of it running my life. I suffer with diarrhea and constipation.

Multiple Remedies

Herx?
I have ibs-d and insomnia. I take 1 tsp Apple Cider Vinegar twice/day, 1/4 tsp each l-glutamine & turmeric in the morning, 5000 iu D3 & multivitamin every morning, 5 peppercorns (for hemmies) twice/day, and (for over 6 months now) 2 tbs dairy kefir/day. I also use magnesium oil 2x/d and take melatonin sublingual for sleep (not much help).
The last month has been so awful--my skin is getting pimply (even my scalp) and very dry (I can scrub off skin like dirt), my ibs d has cranked into overdrive and I just feel exhausted. I work full time, post-menopause, and care for an ill family member. My hope is that my skin/bowel issue is due to a healing reaction, that I turned a corner or something.
Please, tell me if you agree and, if not, make suggestions as to what I can do. Btw, the hot flashes/sweats have passed but now all of a sudden I'm weepy. I went through all that after a hysterectomy 13 years ago, why would it restart? Maybe my hormones are getting weird?
Multiple Remedies

I have had IBS / Chrohn for awhile now. Probably over 10 years or more. I always thought that I was weak and was easily food sensitive or that my intestines were weak and it would constantly get scarred and bleed. I often get diarrhea after eating and my stools would often contain Mucus and Blood. Never knew that it was abnormal. Not until my sister was diagnosed with an intestinal infection that was resistant to anbiotics and displayed the same symptoms as me, and that was when I became aware that probably I had an infection as well.
I read that alot of times, IBS could be caused by a parasite infection. These parasites are very hard to detect in the stool samples and hard to kill, because they live in your mucus membrane of your intestines which is very thick in Fat and the parasites themself also have a very thick layer of cell wall protecting their bodies from regular treatments as well, making them extremely difficult to get rid of. If you want to get rid of these Parasites, you need to strip the Fat off 1st, and a good way to do this is by Sea Salt. and These parasites also live off of carbohydrates and feed off our foods. So we need to cut off their supply of foods as well. So I decided to go on a Flush and Fasting for the next 4 days. Here is what I did below.
1st Day: Drink 2 teaspoon of Sea Salt mix in 1 Liter: Early morning before eating or drinking anything. within 30 minutes, I went to bathroom and alot of diarhea and gunk came out. Then I Prepared 2 Liters of Lemon Mixture. Each Liter contained Water, 2 lemon, 6-8 Tablespoon of Maple Syrup (100%, Grade B), and 1/2 cayenne pepper. Mix well. And drink about 8-10 oz every hour or so for the whole day.
2nd Day: (Same as 1st day). But, I flushed with sea salt 2x. One time in morning and one time before I go to bed. and I also added 2 tablespoon of Applecider Vinegar mixed in 8 oz of water after each flush. I waited for 30 -45 minutes after the Sea Salt Flush to go through, then I would drink my Applecider Vinegar in 8 oz of water. Wait for about 15-30 minutes, and then drink my lemon mixture (8-10oz every 1 hour or so, until I am done with the 2 liters).
3rd Day: (Same as 2nd Day). But, I flushed 3x with Sea Salt (and now, I increased by 1 teaspoon, so each time I flushed, I was using 3 teaspoon in 1 liter of water), followed by 2 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar within 30 -45 minutes after each flush.
Note: The reason why, I flushed 3x istead of 2 (and also increasing 1 extra teaspoon) is because , I want to make sure to do it frequent enough and for the Sea Salt to be strong enough to kill all the Bacterias that are harmful and parasites or anything else in my intestines that are living in there that could be harmful to me. And I want to flush them all out. On this 3rd day, I honestly feel like a hollow tube. Flush, Flush, Flush.
4th Day: I also Flushed for 3 times (with 3 teaspoon of Sea Salt in I liter of water), but now, I discontinued and stop using the Lemon Mixture with cayenne pepper. Instead, I bought 3 bunches of Cilantro at the store and I blend it with 2-3 Tablespoon of Milk Thistle ( you could either use milk thistle seeds, roots, or stems). What I had on me was milk thistle seeds that I ordered online (i already had this a few months before), so I ended up using those.
After I flushed with Sea Salt, I waited for the flush to go through, then I would drink the 2 Table spoon of apple cider vinegar in 8 oz of water and waited for at least 15 minutes, then I would grind 1 bundle of cilantro with 2-3 tablespoon of flax seeds. (I repeat this process every 2 and 1/2 to 3 hours or so, because by this time, I am begining to crave for food and I just wanted to end this 4 day fasting as fast as I could. But I couldnt stop yet, because I wanted to make sure that I got rid of eveything and also I wanted to detox my body from heavy metal and mercury.)
The reason why I chose not to use the lemon mixture with Maple syrup on my 4th day, was because I wanted to make sure that All surviving parasites or bacterias or harmful creatures living in my intestines will finally starve on this 4th day. Also, cilantro and Milk Thistle is a good combo to get rid of all heavy metals, including mercury in my system. So I wanted to also get rid of heavy metals and other toxins in my intestines and body systems as well.
By the time, that I was done with my 3rd and final flush, I got so sick from drinking the Sea Salt water, (Just the smell of it was bringing fear and chills down my spine) That I didnt drink the apple cider vinegar on my 3rd flush, but instead, I just drank the Cilantro bundle blended with 2 tablespoons of Flax Seeds.... And then I waited for a good half an hour to 1 hour before I started to eat regular soft food (I ate 2 big burritos) and NO DIARRHEA OR BLOODY STOOL (usually, I would get diarrhea within 30 minutes or so)!!!
Next day, I ate, and NO DIARRHEA OR BLOODY STOOL... And I was very thankful and It has been that way ever since.... I am just very thankful, and I felt that my prayers has been finally answered. God Luck in using this 4 day method to cure your IBS. You are in my prayers.
Note: There are many times, that I wanted to end this fast early, especially on my 3rd day and 4th day... But I am totally glad that I stuck through it. I dont know if just flushing for 2 days would completely get rid of everything, but I was thinking that I wanted to end this torment once and for all, so I chose to do it in 4 days and slowly built my body up to 3 Sea Salt flushes per day (using starting with 2 teaspoon and ending with 3 teaspoon of Sea Salt). That is alot of flushing though.

Lisa from Bullhead, I'd love to use the lemon peels, but I'm really afraid of the pesticides on it. I've seen an organic lemon and it's not shiny like the ordinary lemons are. I don't have access to organic right now, so how would I use ordinary lemon rind??

Non-Alcoholic Beer

The intestinal problems I'm referring to are caused by too much acid reaching the intestines. I've found that some packaged juices such as grape juice, tomato juice and apple juice, contain a lot of acid and can eventually cause intestinal pain when overdone. I attribute that to the acid eating away at the lining of the GI tract and causing irritation and ulcers. The obvious thing that's called for in those cases is to cut out these beverages. However, even though I used to suffer from such GI tract irritation to where I had to cut out my favorite beverages, I found a way to get around that problem and drink all the fruit juices I wanted without any problems at all and have been doing so for many years now. What I found is that if non-alcoholic "beer" or brew (I prefer Miller or Coors) is drunk at the same time as these juices (I mix them together for a good fizzy drink) I can, and do, drink as much juice as I want without any of the normal problems I used to get. Plus I find it to be a healthy and tasty alternative to soda drinks. I don't know what it is about beer that neutralizes the effects of acid in the GI tract, but it works every time.
Nystatin

TRUST ME, THIS IS ABOUT CANDIDA...
I didn't get over my illness until:
1) I discovered that I had been living with intestinal parasites. My physicians didn't believe that I was ill at all. They didn't want to waste their time and resources testing, don't you know. I was so happy to have them *diagnose* the animalia I presented to them in a box.
(a) the parasites, worms, protected themselves by secreting a biofilm which is both immunomodulating and immunosuppressing. Do you honestly believe my physicians knew / told me that?
2) My physicians explained, (ie., LIED), to me and explained that I had "IBS". Try googling the two words: "IBS" and "TRASHCAN DIAGNOSIS".
(a) "IBS" is a catch all *syndrome* which physicians use to substitute for real medical diagnosis, given that they do not have the time, inclination, energy or desire to solve your health problems for you. They have other things to think about.
3) Once I discovered, after nearly two decades of living in a near constant state of hopelessness, that there was an alternative, legitimate community of health care providers known as alternative, holistic, integrative and herbal medicine, I decided to take the initial plunge into the world of colon hydrotherapy.
(a) This felt great.
4) I went on a candida free diet. I went to an alternative health clinic. I paid $40 for a refrigerated, very fine grain powder, mycostatin. In 3 weeks, I was 85% better. I can now eat fruit, veggies, grains, eggs, etc.,. I had not eaten these things in over a decade. How awful is that!
5) I returned to my HMO with the good news. They were upset. Pissed off even. They couldn't believe that I would BETRAY them like that! How dare I go outside of my HMO! I had gotten off their hook!
(a) I visited a gastroenterologist at my HMO, for kicks. I asked him to take a look at the word, nystatin, which is the generic form of mycostatin. He had never heard of it before but he was willing to do what I asked. It turns out, my HMO's database stated that NYSTATIN WAS INDICATED IN THE TREATMENT OF IBS. Funny thing is, nystatin is a broad spectrum antifungal. And very, very few doctors in mainstream medicine are using it to treat IBS. I met a woman suffering from the same thing I had. She gave me the name of her gastroenterologist. Same dude. I asked her if he had given her a prescription for nystatin. She told me, "No, what is that!"
And so it goes...

I totally agree. I see this all the time with my patients. I treat hundreds of people for symptoms of 'IBS' and test everyone for intestinal infections- yeast, bacterial or parasitic. 9 times out of 10, there is an untreated infection. Once that is appropriately treated, no more IBS.

Better But With Side Effects
I had a lot of success with nystatin powder as well. bloating, gas, and constipation reduced 95% over a couple months. after stopping, however, my symptoms came back. the doc said I might need to continue using periodically. also, I've found a few side effects, including fatigue and pimples
