I had bleeding gums for years and the hygenist always chided me about brushing more and flossing. Brushing, even with a soft toothbrush hurt a lot and flossing was worse. I failed to follow her instructions. Now you can find super soft tapered toothbrushes online or in the health food store. I finally like brushing my teeth! This has made a big difference in my gums. The super soft tapered toothbrush does not clean the teeth well enough, though, so after using the super soft toothbrush on the gum line, then I use a regular soft toothbrush for the teeth, avoiding the gum line, and a couple times a week I use an electric toothbrush over the teeth in any area that doesn't feel quite clean enough. Once again, I try to avoid the gums.

I now use a toothpaste without sodium lauryl sulfate and a rinse without alcohol. The rinse I use already has peppermint oil in it, but I add extra. As a tooth cleaner, I occassionally use calcium citrate powder with a little baking soda. Oh, and I drink my coffee with a stainless steel straw to avoid the kind of staining in the lower front teeth that I previously had.

At night before bedtime, I massage a mixture of oils into my gums.

In the past my enamel had been damaged by over the counter whiteners. They used to say that you can't regain enamel once it is damaged, but this isn't completely so. My enamel isn't as good as it once was, but it has improved from the point of the damage. It doesn't feel dry and rough anymore in the spots that had eroded. It feels smooth again, though thinner. I've tried so many things, so I can only think that it is just time and better hygene that improved the situation.

BTW, I still rarely floss. Sometimes I think it just grinds the food down further. I use a water irrigator, a gum stimulator and small interdental brushes to remove food particles that are stuck.

But I wanted to mention a couple more things. The quality of the water from our tap water is horrible in terms of bacteria. I suspect that a lot of dental problems start with the water. I use filtered or distilled water in my irrigator and add a cap full of hydrogen perioxide.

I have sinus problems and the light dawned that the gum disease and sinus drip are probably caused by the same bacteria. So it would seem that if you get rid of one problem and still have the other, you would be reinfected continously. So that's the other side of the coin I have to work on.

Hello -

Please post this as applicable. I would suggest it be added to the Gum Disease category.

I went to my dentist about my a painful spot on my gums. He said I had some inflammation there, and he prescribed me to apply a bit of ozonated olive oil to that spot using a dental stick. It worked very well! The ozone kills any bacteria and the pain was gone within days.

Diamond I came across this the other day.

This an excerpt, from Dr. Abram Hoffer the full article in the link below:

Niacin, Coronary Disease and Longevity
by Abram Hoffer, M. D. , Ph.D.

Background
In 1954, it was impossible to predict or even to think that my bleeding gums would one day, 31 years later, lead to additional useful life to people with coronary disease related to cholesterol and lipid metabolism. That year, malocclusion of my teeth had broken down the ability of my gum tissue to repair itself quickly enough. Because my bite was not correct there was too much wear and tear on tooth sockets and my gums began to bleed. No amount of vitamin C and no amount of dental repair helped. Eventually I reconciled myself to the idea I would soon have all my teeth extracted.

But at this time I had been treating schizophrenics and seniles and a few other diseases with niacin, and I began also to take this vitamin, 1 gram after each meal, I. E. three grams per day. I did so because I wanted to experience the flush which comes when one first takes niacin and its gradual waning with continuing use so I could discuss this reaction more knowledgeably with my patients. There was also a legal issue - most doctors' defence against malpractice suits is that they were doing what any other similar physician would do it like circumstances. If I were sued (I have never been sued) because of unusual discomfort or because of adverse effects from niacin, I would not be able to use that defence since only a handful of physicians had ever used these large quantities of niacin. I had concluded that if the unlikely did occur and I was charged with malpractice, one of my defences would be that I had tried it myself for at least three months without suffering any serious consequences. I must admit I had not discussed this with any litigation lawyer. My reasons were therefore both practical and paranoid. I had no intention of treating myself or my bleeding gums.

Two weeks after I had started taking niacin my gums were normal. I was brushing my teeth one morning and suddenly awakened in surprise there was no bleeding whatever! A few days later my dentist confirmed my gums were no longer swollen, and I still have most of my teeth. Eventually I reasoned that the niacin had restored the ability of my gum tissue to repair itself faster than I could damage it by chewing with my crooked teeth.

Coconut Oil, Oregano Oil, Hydrogen Peroxide

Not sure what you are referring to regarding the comment about palpatations BUT, sea salt (sun dried) is the only NUTRITIONAL salt for you. It is complete and naturally nutritional, table salt is NOT. Sorry but that is the WRONG choice to make. Sodium Chloride is what your heart needs as it does Potassium Chloride. Table salt is incomplete, nutritionally speaking, and causes more harm than any good. Your heart is a potassium sodium pump, fundamentally speaking, ptoassium chloride regulates the heart and sodium chloride (not table salt) hydrates the blood and is also an integral part of the defense system of your body. Sodium chloride can be a good defense against bacteria and is why it is used in canning processes to prevent botchilism (sp) sorry.

Table salt is sodium chloride. Sea salt is sodium chloride but with trace minerals from salt water. Don't know where you are getting your imformation, but it's scary.

I have a hard time believing that swishing a bit of water with salt in your mouth can lead to health problems. Maybe the mixture you used was the wrong one or maybe the palpitations had another reason. I think that people connect too much of what happen to them to something new they are trying out, no matter how harmless! If you drink a glass of water, for example, and have a headache later on should you connect it to the glass of water you drank earlier on? No.... Exactly my point! If I were you I would try again and see what happens, most probably nothing at all!

Hi again, yes I'm a flosser, I do it every day before bed. How long does it usually take to see results from coQ10? I was taking that 3x a day for a couple of months but stopped. I might have to go to the EC page on it and read up, thanks for the tip! X

WARNING!

WHOA! DO NOT mix 1/2 and 1/2! He is using 35 % food grade H2O2, which is VERY STRONG and can be very harmful if not diluted correctly. From what I've read you can use 3 drops in a glass of water for swishing in the mouth.

IF you are using only the store- bought 3% H2O2, then you could mix 1/2 and 1/2, but the 35% he is referring to is very strong and will literaly burn you!

Hi All, At my last visit to the dentist, I was told that the level 5 pockets which I have had for some time now show blood when poked, which means I need some antimicrobial injections to help save the gum from retrieving from the teeth more. I have been oil pulling daily for three years now and also use 3% hydrogen peroxide as a mouthwash. I am surprised that this is a problem. I have used Bee Propolis in the past and I was unaware that it stained my teeth until the dental hygienist said I had a build-up of plaque in the back area and asked if I changed how I brush my teeth. It was a week or so later that I realized it was Bee Propolis stains not plaque so I stopped using it on my gums because of the problem and just added it to a blender drink until it was finished. I do not really want to get the injections as I would prefer to treat it naturally if possible. I have just changed the Oil I use to Pull to Castor Oil to see if that helps. Any suggestions/recommendations as to what I should do would be appreciated. Would the antimicrobial injections be ok to take? Maureen

Reply to Maureen... For your gum disease you might try olive leaf extract, preferably the liquid variety as it seems more effective than the capsules.

Hi Jay, Thank you for replying to my post and providing the two links regarding Liquid Olive Leaf Extract. It was informative. I went shopping yesterday and bought a bottle of the Liquid Olive Leaf Extract. The bottle says to take 30-40 drops twice a day in water or juice so I have taken it twice yesterday and once so far today. I will update this post when the bottle is finished or I get raving reviews from the dentist whichever comes first! Maureen

This is a follow-up to my last post. It's been three months and I am on my third bottle of 50ml of liquid Olive Leaf Extract as suggested by Jay. I take it daily in water. I visited the dentist last week and was told that I still have bleeding when they poke the gum at a specific tooth. It was disappointing to hear to say the least but I will continue taking Olive Leaf Extract for a while yet. I do notice that I feel like I have the beginning of a sore throat sometimes. It is very mild. I hope it is doing something. I have not given up yet. Maureen

Coconut Oil and gum disease

I tried Coconut oil pulling for gum recession. After having two expensive surgeries my gums continued to recede. After using Coconut oil for about a year my 7 pockets are now 4 and my dentist believes I no longer need to be concerned about receding gums. I credit the Coconut Oil used in oil pulling for the improvement. Thanks for a great site for alternative remedies.

1. Brush your teeth with mustard oil and salt (sea salt or table salt). Use your finger to clean the teeth instead of toothbrush. Do not wash mouth with water.

2. Take one tbsp mustard oil and 1/4-1/2 tsp salt. Put this into your mouth for 20-30 min. Keep on moving this into the mouth. Spit it after time is over. Do not wash mouth with water. You can see the difference in condition of your teeth.
My teeth used to bleed while brushing and pus was forming. One of my tooth became slightly loose at the age of 30. I tried this for 30 days. Now I am 45 and totally free of these problems since.

Are you using food grade hydrogen peroxide or over the counter hydrogen peroxide? Do you just use it as a mouth rinse? I am very interested because I have serious bleeding gums and receding gums that I have been trying to cure with things such as lysine, clove oil, brushing with baking soda and coconut oil. Hoping the hydrogen peroxide will make a difference. Thanks.

I have used MMS for about 5 years. I don't use it continuously but as the need arises. I can say that by mixing 3 drops with 15 drops of citric acid and then adding some distilled water, that I have a very good dental pain reliever. You may pass on this item if you wish, but I can say with certainty that swishing this has brought me pain relieve and kept me out of the oral surgeons and dentist's office. I use it as part of my oral care regimen. If I am experiencing any symptoms at all, I use this concoction to brush my teeth. I have also rid myself of body chills injesting for about 2 or 3 weeks. I believe that I rid myself of a low grade infection by doing so. Lastly I reduced arthitic symptoms by injesting. I use very sparingly and have had good success.

WORKED TEMPORARILY

Hi All

Any feedback to this would be greatly appreciated.

Almost 2 years ago, I had a molar crowned due to the insistence of a dentist (porcelain crown, metal base). Too late to say that I wish I hadn't trusted him. Anyway, since then I have had a regular "gluey" feeling between that upper molar and my eye on the same side. It's not painful, as such, but I can always feel the it and the connection between the crown and the right side of my head and my right eye. I do not want to have any dentist fiddling around unnecessarily in my mouth again, and was wondering if anyone would know what this is about, and what I can do. Also, I don't mind dealing with this for the rest of my life as long as it does not worsen. The ideal would be to get rid of this feeling altogether.

I use castor oil, HP, clove oil etc (haven't tried garlic yet), and they all help, but once I stop the congested, uncomfortable, tight feeling comes back. If it's a nerve, I do not want it to worsen - it's already been almost 3 years of a static situation. (I also had to have the bite adjusted twice, but there's still a slight problem).

Thank you all
Tristan

WARNING!

I want to warn everyone against using hydrogen peroxide orally. I brushed my teeth more than 6 months with it and wound up with 11 deep cavities that nearly cost me several teeth - I don't believe in root canals for the health disadvantages. I went on line and was shocked to read of a study that suggested the h2o2 penetrated the tooth enamel. Wish I'd read the study earlier. Yes, the h2o2 kills germs, but apparently there's no end of germs available in the mouth and they apparently are transported into the teeth where they grow cavities.

My son who followed me in this misguided endeavor, whose gums are not receded as mine are, and who never gets cavities, had two cavities at this time as well. A word to the wise is sufficient.

Oregano Oil

I have periodontal disease and have found that brushing with oregano oil has really improved my gums and to stop tooth pain. I have stopped using toothpaste, now if I use it, I find it doesn't clean my teeth as well as the oil does and my mouth still feels "dirty". The taste does get some time to get used too. I started out by using only one drop, but now use 3 drops on my toothbrush. I bought a good quality oil, not the alcohol tincture. I first discovered brushing with oils when I researched the net and found a product that was quite expensive, I liked it, but didn't like the cost. I tried brushing with tea tree oil but found that to be very offensive, reminded me of brushing with pine sol. The oregano is quite strong, so try not to get it on the back of the throat, I'm so used to it now that I love brushing my teeth with it, then I rinse with an alcohol free mouthwash and that takes care of the oregano smell, my breath and mouth feel clean for hours, even through out the night, in the morning I awake with a clean feeling mouth.

Oregano Oil

I have been battling a gum infection for 2 months. After three courses of antibiotics, I gave up and tried Vitamin C 3000mg. This began to improve my gums, however, the infection persisted. My gums have been aching, sore, dark red, and inflammed.

I decided to try Oil of Oregano. I purchased a brand that was 60% diluted in extra virgin olive oil. Immediately, with a clean finger, I rubbed one drop of it over my gums, and another drop on the other side. Immediately the ache subsided. After 8 hours, my gums felt much improved. There is a slight tingly warm feeling upon initially applying which is normal for Oregano Oil. Before bedtime, I repeated this again, along with placing one drop beneath my tongue, holding it in place and washing it down with water.

I woke up with my mouth feeling more nomal than it has in weeks. Another additional benefit, it cleared my sinuses! They have been blocked.

Caution: Do not use Oil of Oregano undiluted. It is caustic and it WILL burn. That is why dilution in extra virgin olive oil is important.

I'm sharing this remedy in hopes it will help someone else stop suffering today!

Turmeric
Posted by Alexandra (Bay Area, California) on 12/03/2007

I began getting increased trouble with acne rosacea flares (this is quite a different condition from acne vulgaris/teenagers acne). The flares were happening despite my already taking fish oil and an antibiotic ointment from the dermatologist did not help much. Then, I read in the news that acne rosacea is caused by a build up of inflammatory by products in the skin.

At once, I thought of using turmeric. I mixed turmeric spice with water and dabbed it on my flare spots. I had to scrub hard to remove it next day as it stains the skin, but 3 days later, my flare spots were gone. I take 1 teaspoon of turmeric in water each day, internally.

Then, I had to have a dental procedure where they had to do a lot of digging around in the gum to install a temporary crown. I was told my gums would feel sore and to take some ibuprofen. Instead, I swirled turmeric in my mouth after brushing my teeth, letting it reach all my gums, then swallowed it. I did this every night for the next 3 weeks. I had no gum pain at all and when I returned to have the crown installed, the dentist was amazed at how healthy my gums were. I told him I'd used turmeric.

Warning---turmeric stains white cloth and clothing, and it will probably stain artificial dental implants and dentures. But if you have all your teeth and want something extra for healthy gums, turmeric is amazing stuff. Warning..it may constipate in considerable dosages so if you have to use a lot of it, increase both fluid and fiber intake.

I would like to know if anyone that used Bee Propolis with success did Oil Pulling after their gum was healed? Did the Oil Pulling affect the healed gum? As I mentioned in a previous post unrelated to this one. I had "Guided Tissue Regeneration" surgery done in December 2004 above 2 teeth. I came across Earth Clinic in January 2008 and decided to gargle/pull with Hydrogen Peroxide a couple of times before I learned about Oil Pulling. I am not sure how long I was Oil Pulling before I discovered the area that had the surgery done was completely clean, not a good thing for me in this case as the procedure costs just over $2,000. I imagine the Hydrogen Peroxide cleaned my gum but the Oil Pulling might have done the same thing. The dentist was after me to consider having an "Osseous, Allograft" done which is now a type of bone graft. I do not want to get it done because I want to continue Oil Pulling and believe it will wipe the gum clean again. Any comments/suggestions would be appreciated.

Hello Vicki from Tallahassee, I didn't know what stores to find bee propolis so I went online and got mine from Club Natural. I used 25% instead of 30% extract since I couldn't find 30% anywhere. I started using it on the 25th of March every night. Like, you I do have sensitive teeth from where my gum had recessed. And it seemed to me like when I put it on it stings a bit where I had bum recession. It seemed too early to see if there's any results.
It would be great if any one had tried it and if indeed, cured their gum disease (stopped bone loss, regrow gum, erase sensivity) and how long it took to show results.
thanks!

Hello Nina from Tallahassee -- thanks for responding. I went to New Leaf and special ordered the propolis, but haven't got it yet. I ordered the 30%. Hopefully it will help -- at least enough to keep me out of the periodontist's office! I've been oil pulling with Sesame Oil once in the mornings for 10-15 minutes -- have been doing this fairly consistently for about a month now and I've noticed my teeth are whiter and not so sensitive. I also take ACV morning & night - 2 Tbls - and chase it with Mona Vie acai berry juice - 2 oz - and WOW what a kick that is! I have a lot more energy and focus and just generally feel better. I will post again once I've given the propolis a go -- I'm keeping my fingers crossed!

I bought bee propolis tincture at 10% concentration, (made in switzerland), that's what I found at my health food store. Before bed I now do the following: I pour a few drops of the tincture into the lid. I dip the special toothpick that my dental hygenist recommended into the tincture as I clean my teeth. Then I dip a q-tip in the propolis in the lid and paint my gums. When I wake up in the morning, my gums are completely pink!! They are pinkish during the day. Before I started, they were bright red.

I am also oil pulling. I can feel the difference on my teeth. They constantly feel like I've just had them cleaned, instead of feeling furry like they usually do.

In a few months I'll go back to the dentist and see if I still have periodontal pockets. In the meantime, the results seem positive.

I see a lot of people here use propolis tincture for the gums. I tried that but the taste is extremely bitter and I'm worried about alcohol (sugars in alcohol) damaging tooth enamel, so I purchased PURE propolis powder. It only contains 5% maltodextrin to prevent too much clumping, so the rest 95% is propolis (not 30% like in liquid tinctures). I take a little chunk of it (approx. Size of chewing gum) and put it under my tongue overnight. It turns sticky when wet, but not drastically. As long as it's not touching teeth, it's fine and removes easily. When I wake up, I swallow what wasn't dissolved with saliva overnight (so it serves as taking propolis as a supplement as well). I have only been doing it for a week or so, but I started because I had a sore on my gum and it was gone overnight! I also get a lot fresher taste in my mouth in the mourning, like there's less bacteria building up overnight...

I am planning on having this routing to help me with gum recession, so I might post later with results on that...

I have researched all of the known benefits of propolis. My question is regarding the use of pure propolis powder in all my kitties organic food which also includes powdered Garden Of Life and plenty of probiotics. The cat rescue that I run sometimes houses numerous animals, many of which have been homeless, neglected, and abused. Some of these four legged fur babies suffer from periodontal disorders. I am currently using an herbal propolis tincture which I make into a homeopathic tincture so that it does not sting their mouths. But it is quite a job to medicate each one individually as well as impossible to treat the skittish ones. Please if anyone has any information or recommendations, on dosing amounts etc. that can help me help them contact me at the Earth Clinic website.

I am thankful for any help.

My very best regards,

Hydrogen Peroxide

I am glad you are having some relief from the Hydrogen Peroxide ... but IMO you need to get to the "root" of the infection (no pun intended). There is a reason for it! From someone who has experienced more dental work in my lifetime (I'm 64) than anyone should have to (due to bad dentistry), I have been "clean" for years now, due to a very competent biological dentist. The key is to take care and be proactive when it comes to oral health. Dental issues can linger for YEARS, possibly making things worse. Just my two cents.

One more thing I can add - I bought a water pic and even used a bit of hydrogen peroxide in it and it did not do anything much.

Multiple Remedies

Is the only remedy for gum disease caused by a decade-old crown to get it replaced? I might have been scammed a decade ago when I was told by a dentist I needed multiple crowns when I was only 20 years old. I take good care of my teeth now yet have bleeding and painful gums at the crown's locations. I have been trying multiple remedies for gum disease, yet nothing seems to help at those locations.
