In researching the causes of anxiety attacks, I believe it beneficial to note that 'breathing' is essential to physical well being. Shallow breathing which leads to insufficient oxygen appears a catalyst to these attacks.
What does that mean? When an anxiety attacks appears, get up and move, fast if you can, run, walk, whatever, just remember to get those lungs filled with air and gently exhale through your mouth. Repeat slowly and deeply enough to accomplish a replenishment of oxygen without hyperventilating. Hold your intake of air for a few seconds and slowly exhale through your mouth, repeat at least 10 times.
I am giving an update. Holy Basil did not work, all though I thought it had. Just temporary relief. About five days later I ended up in the emergency room for a full blow panic attack and they gave me 1mg of valium, which brought it down. Also a temporary prescription of adivan, which really didn't do anything for me, chilled me only for a few hours. The next day, still anxiety, and so forth. It took me about 5 days of experimenting to figure out what was wrong - took 50 mgs of Dhea, and finally could breathe again, all anxiety left. It was my adrenals all along. Please do research on low Dhea, as there is a kind, I believe call Kudo, that inhibits it affecting other hormones in the body so that you don't grow a mustache, thinning hair. 50mgs is very high to take for any long period of time, check out info on Curezone or other forums.
Awhile back I was dating a heavy beer drinker. I started heavy drinking beer with my buddy. 'bout a 6 pack of exotic beer a night. 'round that time I got horrible panic attacks for the 1st time in my life. So bad I'd go to the hospital. They gave me drugs but the drugs didn't help. They'd give me more drugs util I was a zombie. My family complained & I was taken off. I had also stopped drinking beer cuz your not supposed to drink while on these drugs. So even I stopped the drugs I didn't get panic attacks that sent me to the ER. Lots of sugar can also bring them on a lil' bit. I've been readin here & other places that alcohol & even sugar can deplete the body of nutrients like magnesium. When I rub some magnesium on I feel calmer. No panic attacks. Also helps with my leg cramps and speeding heartbeat I sometimes get at night. IDK why the hospital doesn't look for such. There tests don't seem to pick up borderline deficiencies. My shrink tried to tell me I got me a chemical imabalance and needed the drugs. When I stopped the drugs that made me nutty in a different way, the attacks were gone. Cuz I quit the drinkin as well.
Hello, I have had anxiety issues for about 15 years, the doctors all say is it GAD, but I believe it is social anxiety, issues accumulated mostly as a child that were never addressed, just stored within me. I have taken Paxil, Lexapro, Zanax and Effexor. Effexor is the only one that really helped me and still let me feel normal. Just recently my sister who has similar issues to me went thru EMDR sessions with a professional, no medications used at all. This is eye movement desensitation reprogramming. You are awake, and take no meds. This counseling basically reprograms your brain with good healthy info. My sister has become a confident person and says this has worked for her. I am currently weaning myself off 225 mg of daily effexor and have started using some self help methods and it has already boosted my confidence and my shaky nervous voice is becoming less noticable.
I have used EFT to cure my anxiety, fears, sadnesses, and all types of pain too numerous to mention. It's such an easy technique to learn and use you can try it for almost any issue. If you don't get results there are plenty of other energy healing modalities that will be helpful. Here is a chart I use and with the tapping points and also a chart that explains what each point does energetically: http://www.freewebs.com/stevelevine/efttappingpoints.htm
Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT)
The 3 years fight with anxiety was resolved by remote energy healer (CoherentHealer.com) and EFT ( emotional freedom technic) - tapping. The healer fixed my aura and told me that anxiety is caused by the trauma when you were a baby and did not have any control ( I was bit by a neighbor) and all other emotions that not released by me. I was very sceptical. He told me to do tapping on specific issues. If 4 days ago drive in a car as a passenger was so bad, today I drove to the store myself. Thank you.
For anxiety, improve your digestion system. The gut is the second brain. Haven't you ever heard of the gut/brain connection? If you are not digesting your foods, this can wreak havoc on the entire body. I was getting very anxious with heart palpitations before and ever since I improved my digestive system by taking digestive enzymes and probiotics, I have been calm as can be.
Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing. It can be done by looking left and right, hearing sounds in alternate ears left and right, crossing your arms and tapping your hands on opposite arms, or patting someone's legs left and right to help them. The idea is to stimulate the left and right hemispheres of the brain alternately while dealing with the trauma. I'm thinking it helps the emotional side of the brain and the logical side of the brain talk. You can read up on it on the net easily enough, but it's best that a therapist help adminster it for best results.
I heard that people in the 9/11 attack used EMDR with good results. I used it for getting past a rape and another invasive trauma. EMDR is the therapy that finally helped.
Omega-3 fish oil works great for anxiety

I read a thread here a few weeks ago from Teena about flaxseed oil for anxiety. I bought cold-pressed, high lignin flax oil from the health food store to try it out. Very inexpensive compared to other omega oils, btw. I took a tablespoon and OMG, my anxiety disappeared within an hour. I can't believe it. I have a lot of stress and anxiety, which plagues me at night especially. I have tried other remedies for anxiety over the years including magnesium oil (helpful as well), but flax has been the VERY BEST of all I have tried. Oh I hope others will try it out. The only side effect is that it makes me need to use the bathroom more often than usual. So I take a break every few days. Going to try cutting back to a teaspoon and see if that is equally effective. Gratitude -- Thank you Teena for recommending this remedy!!!!
Flax Seed Oil
I use flaxseed oil softgels of 1000mg or more. Cold pressed! Organic. I take as many as I need like 2 per meal. It helps with my anxiety so much, very quickly after I take them. I take them also prior to getting my period, which helps to balance mood then.
Flax's fatty acid profile: omega 3,6, and 9. Love it!
Flax Seed Oil
I suffer with social anxiety disorder, I'm anxious and have difficulty thinking clearly in general not just in anxiety situations.I got myself flaxseed oil and took a tablespoon.I felt better instantly. My thinking became a lot clearer and my usual confused anxious state diminished. It definitely has a significant effect on brain chemistry. I'll be taking it everyday now :)
Anxiety attack--- a symptom of gaba deficency.
Have you ever wondered why some people always feel great while others always feel depressed or anxious? Scientific researchers have discovered that we are far more dependent on our gut flora that previously thought.
Gaba is an amino acid the body uses as a neurotransmitter to promote a calm sense of well being.gaba is the tranquility in the midst of life's storms. Gaba is what helps us relax and gaba also increases our tolerance to pain. In a deficency of gaba we feel anxiety, fearful, stressed out all the time and unable to relax. In a gaba deficency our pain levels rise.
So how do we make gaba in our bodies? The answer is we dont make it, it is made for us by a certain strain of gut bacteria called lactobacilli rhamnoses. In an absence of this intestinal bacteria our neurological health suffers. We develop anxiety attack and depression. sometimes people slip into such a state of depression they think suicidal thoughts as a result of a gaba deficency.dRug and alcohol cravings are often linked to a gaba deficency
So how do we overcome a gaba deficency? First we can take additional gaba as a supplement. It is available at any health food store for cheap.
Next we need to limit the amount of things harmful to our intestinal bacteria such as crops sprayed with roundup, antibiotics, too much colloidal silver, food preservatives like cancer causing bha and bht. Even coffee has a very negative impact on the intestinal microbiome. We then need to replenish benefical bacteria such as lactobacilli rhamnoses and others . Proper gut microflora is just now being recognized in psychology as having a direct cause-effect relationship on mental health.
My husband has been using GABA for a few years....maybe 5 years and there have been NO side affects at all, except to calm him down...I even take a pill when I'm going to be in a stressful situation, like visiting his mother, for example! lol
Hi, I just want to say that I am so happy to have found this web site. I really need help for my son and I cannot sit here and cry about this anymore. My concern is that my son is seventeen years old. Ever since he was 13 years old I recognized that he started to get anxiety and was a little on the hyper side. When he was in the fifth grade they tested him for A.D.D. and they said that he did not have it so as he grew up during junior year it became worse where he did not want to go at school, his grades were dropping and had no strive for anything. I thought that home school would help him so I started to home school him because I thought is anxiety would become better but it got worse.
He finished his home school and graduated but his anxiety level isn't any better. His moods go up and down. When his anxiety goes up there is no talking to him to calm him down. I just let him be. I want to bring him to therapy but he will not go. I know he needs help but I dont know how to get it for him. He is always anxious and looks like he is very nervous at times. Because of this he will not go out in public if he doesn't look perfect. If one thing is wrong with his looks or his clothes he will not go out the door. He is always in the house. I am a single mom working and going to school and I feel like I am not doing enough for him. He won't go out, doesn't have any friends, always home I like this anxiety is getting worse and I feel like he is going to loose his mind from being home all of the time. It's like he has phobia or something. I feel like he is afraid to go out in the real world and I don't know if it was right to take him out of school but at the time I think it was. I feel like my son is trapped in his own home. I don't want him to be like those people who are afraid to step out of there box because of this anxiety is so bad.
Please!!! How can you help me with this situation. Thank you Abby
