SALT WATER GARGLE

[YEA]  08/16/2007: Beth from Clearfield, PA writes: "I really enjoy this site and have tried some of the suggestions with much success. I have been ready about the Cayenne Pepper for a sore throat. I can't even imagine how that must feel. I am not a fan of spicy hot things so I know I would never try the Cayenne Pepper. If there is anyone out there that is not a fan of this type of remedy, I have one that I have used for years with total success. Gargle with salt water. I can't give you the exact measurements, because I don't make the same amount every time, but I can tell you that the solution should not be any saltier than your tears which is not all the salty. This remedy has worked every time for me and my family. My husband's aunt, who was an army nurse during WWII, told me that they used salt and sugar solutions to cure a lot of things years ago when she was growing up. Both items have healing properties when used correctly. Hope this suggestion helps someone."

[YEA]  03/04/2007: Johnny from Glendale, California writes: "Salt and Water (Remedy): I have a sore throat remedy that i have used for many years now. It gradually reduces strep throat illnesses almost 100 percent of the time. I take one glass of water and i put an amount of salt in it (The amount of salt should be enough to taste like saltwater from a beach). I then gargle it for a couple of minutes, and I repeat the process often. You should see major results after the first time you do it, and complete recovery after a couple of days."

Cough drops don't work because once you eat them they are gone. Salt will actually heal the throat. You can look it up. I think that it kills the bacteria that causes sore throats. I just know that it works. I use warm water and enough salt that I can stand it."

SALT, PEPPER AND VINEGAR

1 YEA

[YEA]  11/30/2007: Elizabeth from Orangeville, Canada writes: "I mix salt, black pepper and vinegar together. The salt helps to dry up phlegm, the black pepper appears to cling to lose phlegm and pulls it out and the vinegar appears to kill the germs. Mix together in a strength you can handle (you can mix in warm water if vinegar is too strong) and gargle about a half a cup for the first time then again before bed or if throat bothers you during the day. It's a very old remedy my mom used on me as a child."

SORE THROAT TEA RECIPE

1 YEA

[YEA]  03/15/2008: Erin from New Brunswick, New Jersey writes: "Hey -
Just wanted to give a yea! to the sore throat remedies listed. I have used a similar tea mixture 3 times over the course of 2 years when I have felt a sore throat coming on, and it has never failed me! I have never gotten a full-blown sickness. In fact, I have yet to miss a day of work for being sick. My tea recipe is as follows:
Boil water in a small pot, once it boils, turn off the burner.
Throw in
- several cloves of garlic, whole (2-4 depending on the amount of water)
- several pieces of fresh ginger
- as much cayenne pepper as you can take
- a flavored tea bag (for taste)
- honey (to taste)
I drink a cup in the morning and one in the afternoon. My sore throat begins to get better, and after about 3 days (on average), it is completely better."

STREP THROAT COMMENTARY

1 YEA

[YEA]  10/15/2007: RJ from Nashua, New England writes: "I was surprised to learn that latent Strep. from Strep. throat can be dormant for years. Strep., not only linked with heart problems, Scarlet Fever or Rheumatic Fever, joint pain, etc., also has the capability to produce a ANA. It's important for a physician to differentiate a ANA from Lupus, or as a secondary symptom of dormant/latent Strep. Check w/physicians re: antibiotics for differentiation. Old days, Scarlett Fever/Rheumatic Fever was treated very different. Old days, treatments were different - like written in the older version of The Velveteen Rabbit. Rubella has similar difficulties - typical MMR shots cause problems for quite a few people. So always keep contact w/your physician!"

[NAY]  06/17/2006: Victoria from Tampa, FL writes: "You need to be careful when eating lemons or the juice from a lemon if you have a scratchy or dry throat at ALL. I am a singer and my doctor advised me to use a cool mist humidifier, drink water constantly, and suck on hard candy. Throat drops with menthol- BAD, lemons- BAD, and soup with salt- BAD. These will all dry the throat."

Now my throat feels much better and it feels more opened up so I don't feel like I'm gagging. I took half of a lemon and squeezed the juice into a glass along with any of the pulp. Then I added some water and a lot of sugar because I don't like sour tastes and it works great and tastes even better!"

[YEA]  04/23/2006: Rob from Houston writes: "A very old woman from Oregon told me about this about 20 years ago, and it's got a 100% success rate so far, at least for me and the friends I've suggested it to.

To permanently cure most kinds of sore throats, you merely need to suck on a lemon. Use either one small lemon or a little more than one-half of a big lemon. Cut it into sections as you would an orange, and suck the juice out of each section. Try one more time an hour later if the sore throat still hasn't passed. If it's still sore after an hour after your second dose, you should strongly consider seeking medical assistance.

Lemon juice is very acidic, and can erode the enamel on your teeth, so I would recommend brushing your teeth soon afterwards. You can just drink lemon juice instead if you don't have an actual lemon handy. On one occasion I mixed about three-fourths of a cup of lemon juice with about 2 cups of water and gulping that down seemed to work just as well. After reading some of the other cures posted here, it occurred to me that gargling with a lemon juice / water mixture might have been a good idea. Merely having a glass of lemonade or two doesn't seem to work very well--I suppose because it doesn't have enough lemon juice in it. I feel that the idea is to assault your throat with the acidity of the lemon juice, and if you get enough down there at one time, the soreness just stops. I am no doctor, but I have not yet had a sore throat for the last 20 years or so that a lemon didn't permanently cure."

TABASCO SAUCE

14 YEA    1 WARNING!

[YEA]  05/08/2008: B from Celebration, F writes: "Amazingly, this stuff works. If you can handle the heat that is. I did what another post advised and slid the teaspoon to the back of my tongue and tipped it down, swallowing. It was a bit rough because of the scratchy throat, but I was already in pain anyway (this was a better type of pain for me). I had tried high doses of naproxen, ibuprofen, tylenol, and aspirin, throat drops too. Nothing worked. In a few minutes after taking the Tobasco I could speak without making a horrible face (it hurt to talk). I had also been up 2 nights in a row because it hurt to swallow. I was able to finally get some sleep. It works!"

[WARNING!]  04/29/2008: Gene (jnkeml/@/ yahoo.com) from Gatineau, QC, Canada writes: "Please post this question on the site. Hi, Having been stuck with a bad flu and an especially sore throat for a few days, I Googled and found this site, read every single post in the thread and decided I should try Tabasco Sauce, which is basically Cayenne but in a liquid form. At dinner last night, I sprinkled a generous amount of the sauce on my steak (20-25 drops) and even though I felt like dipping my tongue in ice water, I could feel my sinuses clearing up and the tenderness in my throat fading away. Mind you, every time I eat spicy food (on very rare occasions), I break out in a sweat and can feel a rush, like my blood is rushing through my body at accelerated speed. An hour after dinner, I sprinkled about 15 drops of Tabasco sauce in a glass of hot water and gargled with it, swallowing a bit at each gargle. A short while after my spicy dinner the gargling session, I experienced a severe panic attack which subsided in about an hour. Capsaicin provokes a rush of endorphins, thus counterbalancing the effect of the Clonazepam (explained below) which I take for chronic Panic Disorder and Epilepsy. "CLONAZEPAM which is a benzodiazepine. Benzodiazepines belong to a group of medicines that slow down the central nervous system. Clonazepam is effective in treating certain types of seizures (convulsions, Petit Mal) and is also used for a mental health condition called Panic Disorder by working on the nerve cells in the brain to enhance the effects of a chemical called gamma aminobutyric acid (GABA). GABA slows down nerve cell activity to cause relaxation and decrease nerve excitement." Later on: "Capsaicin helps prevent and heals stomach ulcers and has anti-inflammatory properties" Contrary to the above, I had severe heartburn in the middle of the night. "Cayenne is safe if used in moderation but can cause problems in people with stomach problems and ulcers." Something I read elsewhere which confirms what I experienced last night and is contradictory to the above quoted statement. "Some practitioners recommend mixing a small amount (starting with one sixteenth of a teaspoon, and working up to one teaspoon) of Cayenne powder in warm water to take 3 times a day. This is so the mouth experiences the hot spice and the stomach prepares itself. The mouth also absorbs much of the goodness itself, giving an immediate effect." In conclusion, I would like to try the experience again but I think I'll follow the above paragraph's advice, go easy at first and observe any reaction I might experience. Thoughts anyone? I don't really want to go to a clinic, wait 3 hours in a roomful of coughing people only to get a prescription for an antibiotic whose side effects are worse than the benefits."

[YEA]  04/20/2008: Kjalvalr Helvetesokeren from Afjord, Norge writes: "Tabasco Sauce cured my sore Throat. I had not had it for long, less than a Day, but usually my sore Throats don't last until I wake up. So, not wanting to take any Pills, I looked up natural Cures for a sore Throat and was led to this Site. I decided to use the tabasco Sauce, since I knew that Item to be on Hand. Unfortunately, I didn't get the Teaspoon all the Way to beyond my Tongue, so some of my Mouth is in Pain from the Capsaicin, but my sore Throat is completely gone."

[YEA]  02/26/2008: Justin from Suwanee, GA writes: "I didn't think that any of these remedies would help much but I figured what the hell. I woke up around 3 AM and couldn't go back to sleep because of my itchy and sore throat so I hopped on the web and found this place. I didn't have any cayenne so I just poured some Tobasco sauce straight into the back of my throat. It burned like crazy at first and I had to take a sip of water, but my throat immediately felt better. I followed that up by gargling some hot water mixed with a teaspoon full of Tobasco sauce. It relieved my throat long enough for me to fall back asleep."

[YEA]  02/04/2008: Kate from Fort St John, British Columbia writes: "I've had a sore throat for 2 days now and today it was the worst it's been. Felt like I swallowed a few razor blades, so did an internet search for rememdies and here I am. Read through the posts and although I do have cayenne pepper in the pantry, it didn't sound too pleasant to gargle it and drink in a tea. So I tried a shot of tobasco sauce ( I wouldn't recomend this if you can't handle hot/spicy foods very well.) I followed the shot with a rather large glass of milk to sooth, and it's been 5 hours now and my throat feels so much better. It's still sore, but not razorblade painful. I think I'll try another shot tonight before bed and see how it goes."

[YEA]  02/04/2008: Dave from Missoula, Montana writes: "4 Teaspoons of Tabasco relieved 55% of my sore throat pain in under 1 hour. I looked at all the remedies and didn't want to try Apple Cider Vinegar. I have been sipping Hot honey tea for days and have the worst razor cutting sore throat ever. It gets much worse when I wake up in the morning, so I just put four teaspoons of straight tabasco down the hatch and my throat is 55-65% better right now. Slide the spoon past your tongue so it goes right to the throat. I took 4 teaspoons full tabasco five minutes apart, then gargled with 1 tablespoon of cayenne, 1 teaspoon of tabasco, warm water and lemon juice-which also helped. I am not cured yet, but the pain is cut in half! Thank you all for posting on this site, thank God I found it because i DESPISE gargling with forsaken warm salt water-I hate salt!"

So I googled sore throat remedies and came to this site. I didn't have the honey, so I decided to do the tobasco. I poured tobasco on a hotdog (which just so happened to be hot wing flavor) and a little apple cider. The first bite was hell in my mouth. It burned back in my ears. I have completed the hot dog, my nose is incredibly runny, my mouth is on fire, but my sore throat feels better- maybe I burned off all the nerves!"

[YEA]  01/01/2008: Alyssa from Cranston, Rhode Island writes: "I've been sick for about three days. I try to avoid medications and doctors visits because I don't really have the money to spare, and I'm not a fan of over the counter medicines like DayQuil (nature never intended anything to be that orange!) Today is my last day of vacation before I have to return to school, sad story, I know. And my boyfriend is home from college so I want to see him, only natural. But the last thing I want to do is get him sick, or feel crappy while I'm with him. I usually just wait out a sickness, let my body fight it off. I don't have time to waste in bed any more though. So I came to Earth Clinic and read about the Cayenne Pepper but I don't have any of that. Then I read about TABASCO! Funny thing was while I was sifting through the medicine cabinet I looked at the bottle and though "I bet that would clear my sinuses" but I didn't want to irritate my throat. So I mixed it with hot water, lemon juice, and honey. It's sweet with a nice spicey kick I love it and in five minutes I can breath out of one side of my nose and my throat doesn't hurt anymore! I really hope that this helps long term as well but if you need instant relief, try this!"

It will also take away the tickle in one's throat. when an allergy attacks. It is a teaspoon of Tabasco Sauce, taken maybe 3 to 4 times a day. Most people can't handle it, and so you would have to built up the dosage, but I had a chiropractor recommend it to me, and I have never suffered the pain of a sore throat since, not even when I had strep throat."

TEA TREE OIL

4 YEA    1 NAY

[YEA]  12/05/2007: Dana from Fort Worth, Texas writes: "I have had a sore throat twice in the last two weeks, probably due to allergies, and both times I have COMPLETELY kicked it by gargling with tea tree oil mouthwash (I found it at a health food store). I would use it maybe 3 or 4 times during the day whenever it started hurting again, but w/each use it hurt less and then was all gone! Gasp! It had felt swollen as well and that also went away... it just seemed to kill whatever was causing it. I didn't even gargle that long, since it has a sort of medicinal, monkey urine flavor --but don't be scared. Hope this helps somebody!"

TED'S ALKALIZING FORMULAS, CLOVES

2 YEA

[YEA]  03/03/2008: Missy from Toronto, Ontario, Canada writes: "Hello, FIRSTLY, I THANK EACH & EVERY ONE OF YOU, ESPECIALLY TED for taking the time from your busy schedules or physical discomfort for sharing and helping all of us in need. GOD BLESS YOU ALL!

My throat was not only like razors when swallowing, horrible coughing from chest with phlegm & fever, but my gums were very swollen especially on the right side of mouth behind the molars. They were seriously infected, sort of cut up, open lesions and extremely sensitive when I tried to eat. My Tinnitus was so loud my balance was affected. My head was pounding, sinuses all stuffed up and face puffy. I'm scheduled for nasal surgery on the 20th of this mth and needed to clear this up asap or no surgery. I need to avoid antibiotics now as I may need them later and less is more. Oh, and my lips were very cracked and dry. (I just threw out my toothpaste as per info re: fluoride poisoning on this site, using baking soda & H2o2 combo)

I read [your] article about the ice cream and lo and behold....that is exactly what I had at my favourite Chinese Buffet two days prior and even had more of it since then. This seems to happen every time I eat the darn stuff, but NOT as bad as this time. My body must have been very acidic due to over consumption of meat & starch from the buffet along with the poisonous chemical in the ice cream.

Ted’s soooo smart and I thank him from the bottom of my heart for his compassion and knowledge. So I began to alkaline my body with the baking soda WITH NO ALUMINUM and 1/2 of a lemon in a glass of R/O water (reverse osmosis). The AVC just didn’t do it for me.
I stepped up the Super Cal Mag Plus (Shaklee), Vitamin B Complex (which included zinc and Vitamin B2) as per Ted & took Emergen-C (best vitamin C around) & 3% H2o2 spray, food grade & CELL FOOD drops in drinking water & vitamins.

I had not read as far as the cayenne cure as yet, so I made a Organic green tea with ORGANIC ginger (huge difference and very potent) and raw honey. Chewing on the ginger really burned, killed me to chew as gums were so sensitive. (even chewing on ORGANIC garlic did me in). I love spicy foods, but this was so unbearable....I quickly took a large spoon of Virgin Coconut Oil & swished it around my mouth. IMMEDIATE RELIEF! Better and quicker than bread or milk. I pushed a chunk of it onto the cut gums and just let it gradually melt, WOW, IMMEDIATE RELIEF. The cuts started to close up. Lips are a lot better too. I kept all this up over the past 4 days. BUT, I wondered why I was having such coughing jags, then I remembered that I turned down the humidifier in the basement furnace during our last cold snap as the windows were full of moisture. I just turned it back on at 3 am last night. Woke up with no coughing & no pain but also no voice. If you live in an apartment, remember, it may be to dry in there, get a humidifier, air moisture very important.

I quickly came back to this site and read more. I started chewing on the cloves (not garlic) and finally I can speak, not great yet, but I can speak.

Ted’s remedy with Green Tea & Baking Soda combo was what got everything in my throat to finally settle down as of yesterday. I used Organic, no pesticide tea. This combo is the best, I even squeezed in 1/2 lemon juice. (Always remember to wash the outside of the lemon with some of your dish soap to remove pesticides and other germs before cutting into it.) Oh, and to aid the alkaline, I made a pot of Organic Black Turtle Bean Soup as per the Gout remedy (I do not have gout) but thought this would feed me and keep everything alkaline.

I forgot to mention, I also started taking New Chapters Holy Basil to reduce cortisol due to STRESS. Do not swallow. Just crack open the gel tab with teeth and let the God awful contents stay under the tongue for a few minutes and then swallow. You can spit out the gel tab after you get all the contents out. Really helps with the soar throat & stress. Take as often as needed. It really helps to calm everything down."

TED'S REMEDY POTASSIUM BICARBONATE

1 YEA

[YEA]  12/10/2006: Daniella from NY writes: "I have another feedback for the sore throat. I am on antibiotics at the moment (I had to take them, my family insisted) but I developed a couple of days ago a sore throat. I was worried it was antibiotic resistant strep, since I have been having strep other times this year. I followed Ted advise: I gargled with potassium bicarbonate (my brother got it in Italy) and the sore throat disappeared magically in half a day! That's impressive! Thanks to Ted! He is the best!"

TOMATO PASTE

1 YEA

[YEA]  09/21/2007: Ninorine from Tampa, Florida writes: "An old family remedy that has been in my family for years is to boil four tomatoes with a teaspoon of salt until cooked then mash them up to form a paste. Then apply this paste to your neck area and quickly rap your neck around with warm moist towels, then lay down for thirty minutes. If you have a vaporizer place it near your head. This should clear your sore throat in about two day. The remaining juice from the tomatoe paste can be used as a soothing throat drink mixture, be sure to add a hint of salt. It works like a charm. Most say it works best on children."

TONGUE STRETCH

2 YEA

[YEA]  02/17/2008: Lauren from Santa rosa, California writes: "Here are the instructions to easing your sore throat pain:

'Stick out your tongue as far as possible, trying to touch the tip of it to your chin. This is an extreme stretch; when you feel you have reached full stretch capacity, stretch it further, and then even further. You should give this all you've got. You should stretch your tongue toward your chin until you nearly gag. That's it! Usually, sore throat pain will be minimized (if not removed!) immediately. Repeat this technique every half hour until signifigant improvement is gained. I have used and shared this technique for over 10 years with family, friends, and clients, with nearly 100% of people reporting moderate to complete pain relief. -richelle hawks'

i tried this and it worked for me."

TURMERIC, GINGER, BLACK PEPPER, HONEY

1 YEA    1 NAY

[NAY]  03/24/2008: Elsy from Singapore writes: "I am having a bad sore throat. I tried your remedy of turmeric, pepper, ginger in warm water. While drinking the water, the pain reduced. But it returned soon after. Then I cut up half a clove of garlic and added a teaspoon of honey to it. I was unable to take the garlic due to its burning taste. But the honey coated the 'scratchy and painful' parts of my throat. The skin has gone off at the back of my throat. So it is still painful..!"

[YEA]  01/10/2008: Ellen D. writes: "Turmeric: An Indian friend of mine gave me a recipe for sore throat, colds, flu, sinusitis: Take about a teaspoonful of turmeric powder, a teaspoon full of grated fresh ginger (or equivalent of dried ginger powder), a pinch of ground black pepper, honey or sugar to taste, and put it into about half a cup of water and bring to a boil. Then add about half a cup of milk, heat to just below boiling point, and drink the mixture slowly, while hot. I also supplement this treatment by inhaling steam and keeping a hot water bottle on my head, throat or chest. I used to have colds that lasted two weeks; now I can get over them within three days."

[YEA]  02/13/2006: Julia from OR writes: "PREVENTING a cold/flu: My mom learned this from a nurse years back. If you take a pea-sized amount of Vick's Vaporub with a glass of water right before you go to bed when you feel your throat starting to get sore, etc., and you'll wake up feeling great. If it starts to come back the next evening, take another. But be careful only to take a small amount. Also, I keep mine jar in the freezer so it's easier to swallow. Whenever I do this, I NEVER get sick."

WARNING ABOUT SORE THROATS

1 YEA

[YEA]  03/04/2008: Jonathan from Allentown, PA writes: "I have not had a sore throat for over 10 years now. For me, Zinc lozenges were the key.

By the way...it seems some people have sore throats for more than 6 days. If you want to know what it feels like to get a heart valve transplant or artificial heart valve, then do not go to a doctor and do not start antibiotics after a week of sore throat that doesn't get better.

The home remedies only work when the sore throat is caught early. When the infection becomes systemic, it can go to the heart valves, as it did to a dear friend and many patients I have nursed through the years.

The one possible exception is Cayenne Pepper. However, it would need to be taken at least three times a day (preferably early so it does not keep you awake).
This is because the Cayenne (if it is cold processed or not cooked) makes the body shift to alkalotic which will kill both virus and bacterial infections in some cases.

Again, this is only possible. It is your life to gamble with.

Good Health to you."

ZINC

2 YEA

[YEA]  01/30/2008: Marie from Vancouver, BC writes: "I have used zinc lozenges (the type you find in the vitamin section, not the type that looks like a candy) and it cured it about 100% of the times. It nips it in the bud. Whenever I feel that "sore throat" feeling coming on or if I wake up with an already sore throat I suck on one immediately and repeat it as often as the feeling comes back. The key is to abstain from eating/drinking for 40-60 mins after you sucked it. Many people whom I've given it to, came back and asked what this miracle cure was. If I think I have a flu or cold coming, I do the same thing with the same miracle effect. I carry a few tablets with me on a permanent basis. I also would drink zinc tablets in the morning and before bed if I suspect a bug is getting at me to help my immune system. I have used up to 6 tablets over a 24 hour period once, but normally don't need more than 2 - 3 tablets."

[YEA]  08/07/2007: Lucy from Athens, GA writes: "No mention of it anywhere. For shame. I found that cure here and now its no where to be found ACV sounds aweful. But really zinc powder in the back of the throat has relieved the worst cases of sore throat I have ever had consistently."
