Hydrogen Peroxide - an Excellent Sore Throat Remedy

Jul 24, 2016

Earth Clinic readers tell us that hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is one of their favorite methods for quickly curing a sore throat. Sore throats are particularly common during winter and cold weather, but a sore throat can appear any time of the year. Whenever a sore throat strikes, people want to get rid of it as quickly as possible. Learn about the benefits of using hydrogen peroxide to cure your sore throat.

Here's what Shawn wrote to us about how he relieved his painful sore throat with hydrogen peroxide.

Posted by Shawn: [YEA] Hydrogen Peroxide: My throat has hurt for 2 days now and it feels like it's getting worse. I am on an antibiotic for sinus infection, but I have NEVER had such a sore throat. My DR. recommended throat spray which works for about 2 mins... ibubrofen, nope, cough drops, nope. I just found this remedy and actually have it in the house. I felt instantly better, still hurts but I will continue to gargle with it. It even says it on the bottle for oral rinse.

Here's another post from Martha explaining how she uses hydrogen peroxide as a gargle.

Posted by Martha: [YEA] The best way to completely heal a sore throat quick is with Hydrogen Peroxide. The regular brand from any store in the brown bottle. Just brush teeth and mouth and as far back throat as comfortably possible, then gargle about a capful or one tablespoon or even dilute it with a bit of water.

Beware of the fizz as your throat, tongue and gums are stripped of all the bad stuff! It will most likely make you gag from all the funk! Rinse and do it again! You will be amazed at the almost immediate relief! Since it is a natural remedy, you can do several times a day as needed but honestly one or two applications should do the trick! It's amazing that something so common and cheap can do such an amazing job! Best and cheapest cure out there!

What Causes a Sore Throat?

A sore throat is painful swelling or irritation in the throat that can be caused by a number of different things. Sore throats are often triggered by the common cold or a viral infection; however, laryngitis, mono, mumps, the flu and bacterial infections such as strep throat can also cause a sore throat. Other possible causes include infection or inflammation of the tonsils, irritation due to environmental factors such as smoke and allergies.

Does Hydrogen Peroxide Actually Help a Sore Throat?

No matter the cause of your sore throat, hydrogen peroxide can help. A natural remedy, hydrogen peroxide is safe and effective for treating sore throats.

How Does It Work?

Hydrogen peroxide is a powerful germ fighting agent. When you use it to gargle, it kills off germs in the throat and the mouth that are causing the irritation. Likewise, hydrogen peroxide helps to eliminate inflammation, relieving pain.

How Do I Gargle with Hydrogen Peroxide?

  • First, you have to create a diluted solution of hydrogen peroxide.
  • Mix 1 tablespoon of hydrogen peroxide with 4 tablespoons of water. Some people use mouthwash instead to disguise the taste.
  • Use this solution to gargle several times a day.

Is It Safe?

As with any remedy, you must take care when using hydrogen peroxide as a treatment option. Be sure to dilute the hydrogen peroxide, and do not swallow even the diluted solution. You may want to cleanse the mouth with several gargles of fresh water following treatment as well.

Treating a sore throat can be difficult; however, with this natural remedy, you can treat your ailment safely, naturally, and quickly. Give this natural remedy a try, and let us know how it works for you.

Just tried my first throat cleansing using the peroxide remedy and I'm already feeling the ease of my pain and irritation. Thank you so very much!

Only 35% Food Grade hydrogen peroxide is recommended for internal use. At this concentration, however, hydrogen peroxide is a very strong oxidizer and if not diluted, it can be extremely dangerous or even fatal. Any concentrations over 10% can cause neurological reactions and damage to the upper gastrointestinal tract. There have been two known fatalities in children who ingested 27% and 40% concentrations of H202. Recently, a 26 month old female swallowed one mouthful of 35% H202. She immediately began vomiting, followed by fainting and respiratory arrest. Fortunately, she was under emergency room care and although she experienced erosion and bleeding of the stomach and esophagus, she survived the incident. When she was re-examined 12 days later, the areas involved had healed (J Toxicol Clin Toxicol 90;28(1):95-100).

35% Food Grade H202 must be

1) handled carefully (direct contact will burn the skin--immediate flushing with water is recommended).

2) diluted properly before use. 3) stored safely and properly (after making a dilution the remainder should be stored tightly sealed in the freezer).

One of the most convenient methods of dispensing 35% H202 is from a small glass eye dropper bottle. These can be purchased at your local drugstore. Fill this with the 35% H202 and store the larger container in the freezer compartment of your refrigerator until more is needed. Store the eye dropper bottle in the refrigerator. The generally recommended dosage is outlined in the chart below. The drops are mixed with either 6 to 8 ounces of distilled water, juice, milk or even aloe vera juice or gel. (Don't use chlorinated tap water to dilute the peroxide! )

I woke up with an awful sore throat today and have been trying to kick it but nothing had seemed to work. I tried the salt water, lozenges, and decongestants with no results. I decided to give this hydrogen peroxide thing a try. As soon as I started to gargle it made me vomit into the sink. (gross! ) Needless to say I won't be trying that again...ever!

35% h202? That's rocket fuel. Are you sure you got your numbers right???

Trust these posts... This really works! Just go to the drugstore and buy the brown bottle of Hydrogen Peroxide and gargle with it full strength... DO NOT SWALLOW. Rinse several times with plain tap water. NOT FOR CHILDREN since they could possibly swallow the peroxide. Note: The directions on the Hydrogen Peroxide bottle says it may be used as an oral rinse.

I woke up 3 mornings gargling a sore throat. It was majorly sore, but I didn't want it to get any sorer. It was only sore on the right side. So, I came to my faithful and trusted site. I couldn't wait to try the peroxide in my ears. I poured a couple drops in the cap and drop it in my ear and went to bed. It did feel a little weird, but not painful at all. The next morning I got up and my throat wasn't sore AT ALL. It's been over a week now and I never got a cold. I shared this remedy with a cousin who was getting over a cold, but it was still lingering. She emailed me today and said "it worked like a charm"!!!! Thanks to EC and all of you for sharing and keeping us healthy!!

Hi there....was coming down with the sore throat and decided to mix 6% Hydrogen Peroxide (H2O2) with regular water at a ratio of about 2:10 respectively (2 parts 6% Hydrogen Peroxide, with 10 parts water). Then gargled with the solution about 4 times (each time a clean solution) then spit it out after each 1 minute gargle.

The sore throat was nearly gone by the evening of the same day, as the H2O2 gargle was done earlier.

TIP: Try to gargle in such a way that the H2O2/water solution gets deep inside the throat. But Do NOT Swallow solution.

TIP: Gargle with the H2O2/water solution directly after it is mixed, as the H2O2 deteriorates/decomposes quickly when left in the open, which could reduce the effectiveness of the process

There was some Very slight discomfort from the Little bubbly feeling of the H2O2....but the gargle is still worth it

Thanks EC, and hope this helps, bye

I have had a sore throat for a week now. I put the 3% Hydrogen Peroxide (no mix)onto some Qtips and then rubbed it onto my tonsils. It completely got rid of the white pus sacs on my tonsils and was foaming. The Qtips actually had pus all over them..Kinda gross but it worked!! I IMMEDIATELY felt better and am able to swallow now without pain..What a miracle that stuff is! I would rate the pain before using the peroxide, a 10, after using it a 1. Slight discomfort but not really noticeable. I also did it until I saw no more pus on my tonsil or on the qtips. Use a clean qtip each time. Also, this can cause you to gag..so be careful with that. Thanks so much for this website!

I have been in terrible sore throat pain for 4 days now. Been to the the Doctors 2xs and was negative to strep. The size of my tonsils measure to golf balls and the are now covered with white pus! This afternoon my mother suggested that I try her old wives tale of gargling with peroxide! I poured a small amount into a cup, approx the amount that would be used to gargle with and instantly It foamed, i began to gag as huge amounts of mucus and began to pour out! I then rinsed with water a few times. As the afternoon has passes I still continue to have to spit out mucus but it seems to be doing the trick.

I have tried many things and so far but Hydrogen Peroxide is the only thing that worked for me so far although warm salt water worked for a few minutes but didn't last. I actually have 100% Hydrogen Peroxide and plan on trying that with some purified water but so far I have only just tried the store bought (3%). I'm thinking the pure stuff with some purified water may even work better but I need to research the proper ratio before I try that one.

Hydrogen Peroxide worked great for my sore throat. I gargled a mixture of half mouthwash, half hydrogen peroxide. This definitely cut the icky taste of the peroxide. It didn't give immediate relief, but my sore throat was cured overnight. I will definitely be using this again!

The 1/2 hydr peroxide and 1/2 mouthwash is what Colgate sells for $6 for 8-oz -- as Peroxyl. Replaced it with drugstore peroxide and dollar store mouthwash for less than 25cts.

I have used food grade hydrogen peroxide, with great success for the bad sore throat. Can anyone help me to rid myself of gallstones, without the surgery?

Hydrogen Peroxide: I have tried many of these remedies that are supposed to work and they didn't. This one really worked. Just gargle it a few times and it will instantly stop the burning and scratching in your throat. Hope this works for you as much as it worked for me:)

Tried both ways, 3% straight and 3% mixed with an equal part of water, and they work! 3% straight works the best overall but tastes aweful. I got instant relief from the soreness, I began sneezing, my nose started to run, and I started coughing up the infection. I'm definitely putting this natural remedy onto my list of treatments!

I recently tried the Hydrogen Peroxide gargle to cure my soar throat. Although there is a bad taste, it is effective. Just make sure you do it a couple of times until the pain is gone. It takes only minutes if you use pure peroxide, but if you can't stand the taste mix half water, half peroxide, it will take longer but it will work just as well.

ILL ADVICE. HYDROGEN PEROXIDE will do more harm and damage to your entire area than provide any benefit to the situation. You throat area tissues are as delicate as your lower private part. Try it on that area 1st to see what happen to your tissues? Totally sick person will tell person to do that.

This will depend on the concentration and if it's food grade or not... In reality it should be less 3 percent concentration.... I know so many people that take hp food grade internally and it has worked for them.... Personally.... I have had a bad experience and would never take it again.... I guess 2 sides to every story...

It never ceases to amaze me how so called professionals "medical doctors" are the first to come against natural remedies. This is because their education is mostly funded by drug companies. I know their are a lot of doctors our there that mean well, but sadly they received the wrong education. Today's drug companies are issuing billions of dollars of modern day "snake oil" to the American people that don't really cure anything. It's all about profits, and not for our well being, and the FDA stands behind their profits more than our protection. You can believe who you want, but I do not go to doctors that often, and I'll stand behind natural alternatives any day. As for using hydrogen peroxide in for your sore throat, this is working for me today. Two days ago I was exposed to a sick person on my job in a smoky house, and this morning my throat felt like it was cut. I started gargling with H2O2 and it is feeling better. It's even helping my nose release junk. I'm using food grade hp, and I don't recommend using the regular stuff as they have contaminated it so people won't use it. I swallowed a little of my food grade stuff, and my throat started feeling better. I'm going to continue this until my symptoms are gone. Can't afford to miss work.

Hydrogen peroxide is not advised for deep cuts, because it will cause healing of the top layers of skin before the lower levels heal, which can lead to serious infection. However, as a remedy for a bacterial infection like tonsillitis or a superficial lesion or scratch it is a very cheap and effective remedy that will speed healing. It is a form of oxygen, and bacteria is anaerobic, which means it does not 'like' oxygen. So, putting hydrogen peroxide on bacteria 'cuts off it's ability to breathe, ' so to speak, thereby killing it.

The best remedy I have found for a sore throat is to gargle with hydrogen peroxide. If you can't stand it full strength, then mix with a half cup of warm water. You can gargle with a mouthwash afterwards if you don't like the taste. I used to have throat problems all the time, now all I do when I feel the least bit of discomfort is gargle with the hydrogen peroxide. Relief in only minutes. Cured in a day or two depending on the severity of the problem.
