03/15/2008: Erin from New Brunswick, New Jersey: "Just wanted to give a yea! to the sore throat remedies listed. I have used a similar tea mixture 3 times over the course of 2 years when I have felt a sore throat coming on, and it has never failed me! I have never gotten a full-blown sickness. In fact, I have yet to miss a day of work for being sick. My tea recipe is as follows:
Boil water in a small pot, once it boils, turn off the burner.
- several cloves of garlic, whole (2-4 depending on the amount of water)
- several pieces of fresh ginger
- as much cayenne pepper as you can take
- a flavored tea bag (for taste)
- honey (to taste)
I drink a cup in the morning and one in the afternoon. My sore throat begins to get better, and after about 3 days (on average), it is completely better."
12/27/2011: Carla from West Haven, Ct replies: "The tea was great! My ginger wasn't bad, but I made it with garlic, tobasco and ginsing tea and added a little honey and lemon. My throat has been killing me and for the first time it feels a little better. Thanks"
[YEA] 01/20/2008: John from Panama City, FL: "Raw Garlic for Sore Throats. This remedy DOES provide a certain "numbing" effect but for those unaccustomed to hot, spicy foods, BE WARNED: raw garlic IS hot! I had no idea just how hot it would be, never having eaten it raw, and my tongue was ON FIRE! Luckily, I had a cup of hot tea handy and this seemed to help soothe it. (Ice water was also handy and this did NOTHING to help."Replies
[YEA] 02/24/2012: Mary from Cordelle, Ga replies: "The reason why the garlic was hot was because you failed to let it sit for 15 minutes. The properties are released upon cutting and then the properties are internalized in the garlic piece. I have been taking garlic for years. I make sure that I have food in my stomach so that I don't get heartburn. Other than that, Garlic is the highest antibiotic that you can take.
My daughter had a uterine infection after having a baby. I was staying in the hospital with her. The hospital put her on antibiotics and said that she would not get relief until 7-14 days. I started her on the garlic 1 heaping tablesspoon 4 x a day. Again, wait 15 minutes to take it and make sure you have bread or something in your stomach so you don't get heartburn. In three days her infection was starting to clear up- so much for the antibiotics. I believe the natural way was the best way and worked faster. Even a nurse commented and said she knew what healed her and that was the garlic. Hallelujah.... "
02/25/2012: Courtney from Granite Bay, Ca replies: "I'm not the original poster, but I can answer that question for you. You chop the garlic cloves into small pieces, and let the chopped garlic sit for 10-15 minutes before you use it."
02/25/2012: Greg from Wichita, Ks replies: "How do you prepare the garlic? Your comment said you had to let it sit (cool down) for 15 mins but nothing on how to prepare it."
[YEA] 07/11/2012: Susie from Perth, Australia replies: "Very true got up this morning with horrible hurting in my throat. Tried the garlic honey remedy. I minced 3 cloves of garlic and added 2 tbspoon of honey. Waited for 15 min for the garlic o infuse and then just slowly ate the whole thing. Believe me my sore throat has reduced by nearly 90%. The pricking has nearly gone. Hence writing this."
[YEA] 11/30/2007: zach from Vancouver, canada: "When i have a sore throat, i usually go straight for the hot liquids, but this time i tried to research all cures. I came across this site and tried the cayanne pepper and apple cider remedies. I have to say, both of them tasted terrible and only provided up to ten minutes of relief. I then came across a post about raw garlic, i was skeptic, but willing to try almost anything. I took two garlic cloves from my fridge and chopped them up into cylinders. I slowly ate each piece one by one, apart from the burning sensation on your tongue, the garlic coats your throat and soothes teh soreness. I have absolutely no pain now!"
[BETTER BUT NOT CURED] 11/08/2007: RandyMandy from London, England: "for the last week i had a sore throat on the right side. So i chewed on some garlic cut some up and swallowed with water it helped & then a week after i had a sore throat on the left hand side when i awoke i had a full blown sore throat, im sucking on a garlic clove raw and it seem 2 be numbimg my throat....it still hurt!"
[YEA] 06/15/2007: Maryam from Toronto, Canada: "Woke up at 5:30 am from a sore throat, a sick "empty" stomach feeling, and sinus problems. Usually when these sore throats come upon me, i'd rough it out drinking hot liquids for days until the soreness eventually cures. Well I decided that since this woke me up from sweet sweet slumber, i'd FIGHT BACK! So I googled "sore throat remedies" and found this site! How sweet it was! I searched through my spice cabinet and found no cayenne pepper, (which is sad, i'm going to buy a small bottle soon) I never have Apple Cider Vinegar on hand, so I decided to go straight for the garlic. I cut up one clove in small pieces, eating them slowly, and the effect is instantaneous! Gives you a nice burning feeling on your throat, and lasts quite a while too. The "stomach sick" feeling is gone as well. I'm going back to sleep, thanks for this idea! I'll be sharing it with family and friends"
[YEA] 02/27/2007: Tanja from Novo Mesto, Slovenia: "I tried garlic cloves. And it was explosion. Raw garlic- chewed without anything... of course i started to stuffing bread in my mouth- garlic numbed my tongue- and the numbness spread at the side of tongue, down to throat. Just after 2 garlic pieces i am able to swallow without pain (and 2 days on honey and lemon didn't help). I am going to continue with this treatment. .. although i am a bit worried what is my social life going to look like in the next couple days"
[YEA] 12/25/2006: Dalla from Cameroon: "This hit me last Sunday, as I was exhausted, after my class. [YEA] 09/14/2006: Chastity from Chicago: "This remedy cures a sore throat, cold, or stomach virus. This remedy was given to me by my mother in law. She is a very old Mexican women. She told me her Grandma taught it to her. Remember in Mexico they cant just call a doctor when they have a sore throat. You will need a lime/lemon a clove of garlic and two teaspoons of honey. chop the garlic into very small pieces and mix it with all the juice of 2 limes, and the honey. Take one teaspoon every 30 minutes. Your throat will be as good as new. You can also put it into your tea, or any other hot or cold drinks (add as much as you like."Replies
[YEA] 08/03/2012: Pat from Chapleau, Ontario replies: "Yea, so far so good with the lime/honey/garlic after 5 days finally getting relief from a viral infection causing a sore throat. Tks"
[YEA] 05/25/2006: Christa from Magnolia, Tx: "The best cure for a sore throat is to mix chopped up garlic with fresh basil, the add some olive oil to it. (best if you eat it with some bread) NOT only does it help the sore throat go away faster it also keeps your chest from getting filling up with mucus."
03/04/2008: Jonathan from Allentown, PA: "I have not had a sore throat for over 10 years now. For me, Zinc lozenges were the key.
By the way...it seems some people have sore throats for more than 6 days. If you want to know what it feels like to get a heart valve transplant or artificial heart valve, then do not go to a doctor and do not start antibiotics after a week of sore throat that doesn't get better.
The home remedies only work when the sore throat is caught early. When the infection becomes systemic, it can go to the heart valves, as it did to a dear friend and many patients I have nursed through the years.
The one possible exception is Cayenne Pepper. However, it would need to be taken at least three times a day (preferably early so it does not keep you awake).
This is because the Cayenne (if it is cold processed or not cooked) makes the body shift to alkalotic which will kill both virus and bacterial infections in some cases.
Again, this is only possible. It is your life to gamble with.
Good Health to you."

[YEA] 07/17/2010: Leriejane from Seattle, Wa, Usa: "Ginger works really well for sore throats and coughs. My family uses the following ways:
-Boil a 1 inch piece or a few slices, then add honey and lemon.
-Drink 'ginger juice' or 'instant salabat'. (Salabat is a not a brand name, but what the drink is called in the Philippines. ) This is a powdered, hot drink mix that you can find in Asian stores and it gives your throat a nice 'heat'. It has sugar in it, so if you don't want that you could probably mimic the powder by mixing ground ginger with black pepper in hot water."
[YEA] 12/13/2009: Praky from St. John, Barbados: "Personal Recipe:
1) 1-1/2 tablespoon (heaped) of freshly grated ginger (main ingredient)
2) 1 tablespoon (crude/pure) lime (or lemon) juice
3) 1 teaspoon honey
4) 2 cups boiling water
1) Put 2 cups of clean water to boil
2) Peel/scrape ginger skin off, then finely grate ginger pieces until you get one-and-a-half tablespoonfuls
3) Squeeze the lime or lemon until you get 1 tablespoonful and put aside
4) Then place the grated ginger in a heat-proof cup and pour boiling water over it. Add lime juice and honey. Combine by pouring this mixture from one cup into another, over and over, until mixture gets ginger-coloured (Steeping).
5) Sip on/drink this hot mixture as much as you could safely bear, WITH the grated ginger pulp.
Tip: Let grated ginger settle a bit in throat area while drinking
1)Check to see if you are allergic to any of the ingredients listed before atempting
2) Fresh ginger and lime are useful because the beneficial Enzymes are said to be more abundant than powder forms
3) Use this tea/mixture at least twice daily (morning/evening) for 3 days and you will notice the difference before the 3 days
..got this from a website who's owner went to India and was told of this tea there, after having horible sore throat.
01/07/2011: Taylo from Bristol, Ct replies: "Ginger and Lemon...Worked amazing on my sore throat... Thank you so much for your personal recipe!!! Trying to get others to believe me, as I sip the tea right now... and it's gentle on my stomach."
06/24/2011: Earth Mom from Spokane Valley, Wa replies: "I make mine a little stronger. I also like to add chamomille and rose hips."
[YEA] 06/23/2008: Megan from Memphis, TN: "For a sore throat:
Cut 2 pieces of ginger root into fourths
Cut 1 lemon into 8ths
Boil together in water.
Add honey if you like.
I usually leave the ginger and lemon in my cup and drink around it. This lets the tea get stronger. I have seen this flavor of tea at the store also."
[YEA] 01/11/2008: Zoey from Minneapolis, Minnesota: "Whenever I feel a sore throat coming or if many people around me are suffering from it, I chew on small pieces of raw ginger, allowing the liquid to drip down my throat and swallow it all up. I keep some ginger in my purse and chew on pieces of it all through the day. It's not very pleasant as it burns (especially if you already have a sore throat) but it works like a miracle! I've recommended this to some of my friends and it worked wonders for them too!
Another great remedy I got from my grandmother years ago is gargling salt water (a full teaspoon of salt per cup) I melt it with some boiling water, then add cold water as needed."
[YEA] 06/10/2007: Sulaiman from Kuwait City, Kuwait: "I think the best alternative remedy is to use the GINGER instead of the red cayenne. It burns nothing but your throat. An old man owns a herbal supplements store told me the secret recipe of the World's-Fastest-Sore-Throat-Remedy:
3 tablespoons of ginger paste
1 cup of water
2 tablespoons of honey
Boil up the water then mix it with the ginger paste and keep mixing for 5 minutes. Add the honey then drink the mixture whenever you feel that you can stand the heatness of the water. Do the same thing for 5 to 8 times a day and I guarantee you that the pain will go away 100% as you drink the second cup, and in the last cup the sore-throat will vanish."
