WARNING!

[YEA]  Hannah from Vancouver, BC writes: "Melatonin has also been beneficial to me for sleep. I also use at varying times: -lavender essential oil rubbed into my skin (with a carrier oil) spray lavender water in the bedroom -take a "tea" of honey and apple cider vinegar (adjusting to taste) with water. (1/4 cup does the trick). -another idea, is to turn off the electrical things (like tv, computer etc) an hour before bed to allow the body to slow down and let it's natural melatonin do it's job. Turn off the lights and light a candle and have quiet time an hour before bed. Sweet dreams!"

[YEA]  05/29/2008: WT from Spartanburg, SC writes: "Insomnia and Milk: I'm ADD and always have been. Also have allergies which peak at night, coincidentally when I do my best thinking... However if I can't get to sleep I will drink a half glass (8oz) of milk, right out of the fridge. {A regular sized glass is about 16 oz.} If that doesn't do it quickly I drink another half glass and repeat until I'm knocked out! Usually about a glass and a half is all it ever takes, no matter how "wide awake" I am. Just for proportion sake, I'm 6' male about 215 lbs. The warm milk we've all heard of is not necessary. Milk contains Tryptophan and calcium, both of which make you sleepy."

But recently I read that a computer's bright lights suppress sleep hormones. I'm not sure if that's true, but not using it before bed sure helps. But then I got unlimited texting and my insomnia was back again. So here's the deal, don't use your computer or cell phone 2 hours before sleeping. It will help you sleep better and better each night."

I took coconut oil for about 4 weeks and gained about 10 pounds, I was really hoping for the reverse; anyway I found your site and a lot of good information. I started oil pulling the very day I read about it, I have tried with extra virg. olive oil, sunflower, I didn't notice any real change after just one try. then I tried Safflower oil, did it in the morning just after brushing, then I felt sleepy, I decided to lay down on the couch, and slept for 3 hours; I didn't make a connection then until this morning I tried safflower oil again, same reaction. I slept so soundly, good thing I had the day off today. I'll try it again tonite, looking forward to a great night's sleep. I took 1TBSP for 20 mins. So if someone out there has problem sleeping, this might work for you. TED, whoever you are, I wish you radiant health and prosperity. Your kindness and generousity is written all over your words. OMEGA-3

[YEA]  09/11/2009: SK from Carmel-by-the-Sea, California writes: "In July I started having a terrible time falling asleep at night. Insomnia, night-time terrors, anxiety, whatever you want to call it, I had it. The minute I lay down, my mind took off on a rampage. I had watch tv until 3 or 4 am, when I finally felt exhausted enough to sleep, albeit erratically, waking up every few minutes. I was drinking a cup of coffee in the morning, but I have been doing that for 20 years now and it has never affected my ability to sleep.

I started researching the net and tried many supplements that people on this site and other sites were recommending like valerian root, sleepy time tea, lobelia, magnesium, b stress. Nothing had any effect. Then I read on this site about Cod liver oil helping someone with insomnia and realized that the only supplement I wasn't taking was an omega 3. I immediately bought cod liver oil at the health food store and took one capsule a day for a week. Unfortunately, I still could not sleep. Luckily my intuition kept telling me to research omega 3 deficiencies further, so I went hunting for more information on the net. I started reading customer reviews of omega 3 on a site and saw that the most popular brand of Omega 3 had much more EPA and DHA than the Cod liver oil I was taking. 400 mg EPA and 200 mg DHA per fish oil concentrate capsule versus 90 mg EPA and 120 mg DHA for the cod liver oil. I bought the higher dosage omega and started taking 1 capsule 3 times a day before eating. I also stopped drinking my one cup of coffee in the morning. Overnight, I kid you not, my night terrors went away and I was able to get 9 straight hours of deep sleep. It's been over a week now and I am sleeping well. What an amazing relief this is. Not being able to sleep was affecting my work and my marriage. I have such sympathy for those with insomnia issues. You become desperate when you can't get a good night's sleep. It is sheer hell. I read that Michael Jackson also suffered from insomnia and that it tormented him so much that he had to take that drug. Poor man, but I get it now.

Hope this helps someone."

POTASSIUM IODINE, MAGNETIC PILLOW

[YEA]  09/18/2007: Laurin from KC, MO writes: "I am writing to say thanks to Ted who wrote me saying that my problem was probably a calcified pineal gland. I have searched for answers to my insomnia for years spent thousands of dollars for both traditional medical and alternative help and only Ted helped me!!!! I know God allowed me to find this answer through him and I want to say thanks to God, earthclinic and many many blessings to TED! After Ted posted the probable cause, I eliminated ALL fluoride from my life (water, toothpaste, mouthwash, etc.). It is shocking how much of this poison has been put into our products as it is present even in health food store brands. I was already applying Potassium Iodine externally (since I developed an iodine allergy, this is only way I have been able to take it.) I also got a magnetic pillow pad which helps sleep but is also said to help the body detox. Now months later I went out into the bright light and did not enter that hyper alert state. Although I also tried the lime juice and ACV drink, I was not faithful but fortunately what I did was enough. To Ted and earthclinic, you are helping many people and offer a great service to mankind. Thanks again and blessings."

QUESTION

12/26/2011: Jim from Athens, Greece writes: "Dear friends, my name is Jim. I am 50 years old and have a very annoying insomnia for many, many years. I try to have a healthy diet and good sleeping habits but not much physical activity because of a slight immobility problem (not particularly anxious too). No herbs seem to work, only sleeping pills. I have not used sleep inducing devices yet. (does anybody know about them?) I am desperately in need for help! Thank you very much!"

Replies
12/26/2011: Jamie from Lake Worth, Fl replies: "Hi Jim, even with an immobility problem, are there things you can do to expel energy? If so, its worth a try.

Sleep aids make you unable to sleep without them. It could take some time to retrain your body. Believe me I know it stinks to suffer insomnia, it comes in bouts for me. Only when I have to work the next morning, I think because I look at the clock and stress.

If you are used to taking a pill to fall asleep, herbs may not work at first. Your body is used to a much stronger way to put your lights out.

Again practice natural remedies, and be patient. Wake at the same time, as well as going to bed. Limit or eliminate caffeine and stop with the unnatural sleep aids. Do what you can for physical activity. Good luck"

12/26/2011: Alicia from Vancouver, Bc, Canada replies: "Dear Jim, I can sympathize with you whole heartedly. I too have been an insomniac most of my life and during particularly bad phases I have used Melatonin. It's Weber's, and it comes in a 90 pill bottle which lasts 3 months, it's not advised to take it for longer than that. The pills are small and minty tasting and dissolve quickly under your tongue. There are many varieties and brands of Melatonin but this is the one that always works for me. It resests your circadian rhythm with a week or 10 days. You simply take it every night at whatever time you want to be asleep by, for example at 11pm. In about a week or so you will start feeling sleepy (but not drowsy) at 11 pm!!! I couldn't believe it, I've tried everything under the sun including sleeping pills which resulted in a serious addiction problem. You have to make sure to take the pill every night at the same time. No drowsiness or dopiness in the morning.

I would also try mind / body relaxation cd's. These can be a tremendous help. Or a sound that you find soothing. I have some great nature cd's with rain and storm sounds, that work for me personally. Good luck Jim, let us know how it goes, I wish you a very happy and sleepy ( in a good way ) New Year! If you need help with any nature cd's or sounds feel free to email me."

12/27/2011: Francisca from Zug, Zug, Switzerland replies: "Hi Jim, for part of my life I could sleep night and day but, one day, I started sleeping less and having problems to sleep too! Once in a while I will take a sleeping pill to put me on track again, especially if I really need my sleep for some reason but as a rule I won't. I saw my parents and a lot of aging people in my country all go on sleeping pills for life and taking ever stronger ones! There are a few things I do to help me sleep: no computer if I wake up in the middle of the night, rather watch a bit of TV or read a book, that invarioubly gets me to sleep in no time! I know that there are also some kind of yoga exercises you can do in bed that seem to be very relaxing but I have never tried them. Research some relaxation and breathing books on Amazon. I have recently bought a book that has helped me big time: More Instant Self Hypnosis by Forbes Robbins Blair. Although there isn't any specific script for sleeping problems I use the induction script, the one used to induce the hypnotic state to get me to sleep. Usually I don't even finish going through it in my mind. You can also read it out loud before going to sleep. He has another book: Instant Self Hypnosis which has a lot more scripts but I have not been able to find out if there is one for insomnia there. In that book he also seems to teach how to write your own scripts.

Here is how the Induction script works. It is about a very relaxing story where you are on a boat, in a lake, you feel the sun and the breeze on your body, hear the birds tweetering, then the boat hits the side of the lake. You get out, see a path leading to a beautiful mansion, decided to go and explore, etc. It is too long to go through the whole story but I hope you get the picture. As you picture the story in your mind you let go of everything else and eventually fall asleep. Worth trying and the book isn't that expensive. There are also many more scripts like Become more attractive, Curvy Slim body, Easy weight release, Eliminate warts, feel sexy, Feminine pleasure, Firmer, lasting erections, Go to the gym, etc. The few scripts I tried didn't seem to work, only the Master Induction but I intend to keep trying!"

12/27/2011: Debbie from Melbourne, Australia replies: "Re the smart meters, electrical appliances in the home etc. You could try a "grounding bed sheet". I think in this site it is under "barefoot remedies". It works by grounding your body back to the earth. You should also turn off all the electrical appliances at least in your bedroom at night. No computers or mobile phones on near where you are sleeping.

You should also try to go outside regularly in bare feet to ground yourself to the earth. Our rubber soled shoes are causing damage to our bodies. Or find some shoes that are leather soled they also ground you to the earth.

Additionally make sure the room is in complete darkness so that the melatonin can build up. No lights on at all.

I would also take an epsom salt bath before bed (magnesium sulphate) and take magnesium supplements. Magnesium helps with sleep and is very calming.

I also have a relaxation CD which I cannot get through because I am so relaxed I fall asleep half way through. May be worth looking into one of those."

12/27/2011: Tina from Houston, Us replies: "Blue chamomile essential oil (mixed with a tiny bit of jojoba oil or other oil as base) and then rubbed onto your front and back solar plexus chakra areas, and you will sleep like a baby.

Also Standard Process Min-Tran, puts you to bed without any groggyness the next day. Contains kelp, calcium and other natural minerals."

Try elevating your body temperature about an hour before bedtime in a hot bath. Exercise (especially weight lifting or long hikes) will make your body seek the restorative sleep. Don't eat 2 hours before sleeping, and no caffeine, even in chocolate, in the evening (I don't drink coffee at all). I use a sleep mask that helps with keeping out the light, too. Now when I hit the pillow, I'm out pretty quickly."
11/16/2010: Kimmy from Secunderabad, Andhra Pradesh, India replies: "Hi,
You could try Pasiflora Q, a homeopathic remedy to sleep better. Have about 15 drops in half a glass of lukewarm water 3 times a day. The last one should be in the evening about 2 hrs before sleeping. You musn't eat or drink anything at least 15 mins before taking this medicine and make sure you dont brush your teeth immediately afterwards as your tongue has to be clean and not have any strong tastes or smells on it."

Chamomile tea mixed with warm milk at night. Slept like a baby for about 6hrs. However, I'm lactose intolerance and the ACV is killing my appetite. I cant afford to lose any more weight. I have lost 10 pounds in the last 6 months from stress and lack of sleep issues, etc. My insomnia was brought about from anxiety, upper back and neck pain burning sensation that radiate to the hand and feet sometimes. My ears and head are constantly buzzing. My muscles are stiff, tight and feels like it a about to break sometimes. I guess I need to treat anxiety."
11/19/2010: Maria from Gippsland, Australia replies: "Hi Surulere, A few years ago I was getting about 2 hours broken sleep a day. This went on for about 6 months then it got down to about 1 hour for a month. Could not even think straight. My Dr prescribed tryptophan. Took it for about 4 weeks. This broke the cycle for me. Then we were able to deal with the issues. We found one was the house had hidden black mould."

12/04/2009: Jg from Wpb, Fl writes: "Insomnia Psychological or Physiological

Any help?

I have been battling insomnia for over 18 yrs more specifically with not falling asleep after a horrific nightmare over my death. I woke in a panic attack and have never been able to sleep right since. I just don't get those groggy hormones that allow us to get tired and doze off. Maybe that experience has traumatized part of my brain (PTSD)? Maybe my mind or subconscious is protecting itself from not wanting to experience that again. I know that it was not real and that nothing is going to happen to me in my sleep.

I thought it may be psychological and tried tradition medicine with anti-dep / anti-anxity various combinations and nothing has worked so I went off those things after trying years ago. I heard chronic stress can cause thyroid issues or thyroid imbalances can cause insomnia. It's difficult to tell where it is coming from physiological or psychological (stress)

Anyway my thyroid panel was such: TSH barely normal(low reading), T3 abnormal (low) T4 normal, Resverse T3 Barely normal (Very High), TPO Antibodies normal.

Graves indicate low TSH with high T3 and T4. I have the low TSH but not the high T3,T4. So I guess I'm clear on that. Hypothyroid is not indicated because TSH should be High. I do know that I'm not converting the T4 to T3 suffiently becasue of the low T3. The test said that Selenium deficiency can cause this or chronic stress or low cal restriction diet. I do have the body stress from not sleeping and take selenium daily. I tried every supplement along with accupuncture, talk therapy, hypnosis with no results. I'm doing the borax mix and sea salt in 1 Ltr of water thinking could be fluoride issue with pineal or thyroid. I do ACV with baking soda and the other alkalize remedies too."

05/08/2010: Lightawake from Auckland, New Zealand replies: "hi,

i see it`s a year later and i dont know if you are still having trouble with insomnia; i have depression and insomnia has sucked the energy right out of me these last 4 years. ive also tried many things, but i suspect there is something psychosomatic there preventing sleep so a lot of remedies have only worked temporarily. be that as it may, some of this info may be of help - these are what worked the best for my chronic insomnia:

1. EFT -emotional freedom technique. there is a free manual on the net, or you can see a therapist. you tap meridian points on your body to cancel out things stressing you out - it`s really easy and effective on many things like phobias too. when i used it on insomnia it immediately helped me sleep for a week before it crept back again.

2. eyemasks and earplugs - there`s a section on this here but i thought id add some info...there`s a book by a japanese scientist about the importance of keeping the body warm, and in it he talks about insomnia. he says when you dont get sleep you are missing out on non-REM sleep (ie. the deep sleep that gets you feeling refreshed), and that is due to lack of melatonin. melatonin is produced by the pineal gland, which wont produce it if it is being stimulated by too much light. i had a small salt lamp going all night in my room for about 5 years (it was a nice atmosphere!) - and according to him this was a definite no-no! the skin of the eyelids are so sensitive that even very low levels of light will be registered by the brain and stimulate the pineal gland - i was keeping it in a constant state of stress all those years just by having the lamp on at night! he suggests getting rid of all lights at night, putting on an eye mask, and also ear plugs. it worked immediately and solidly for 2 weeks. apparently longterm insomnia affects memory because no new neural connections can be made while the glands are in a stressed state - it takes 2 weeks of regular sleep for the brain to be able to start making those connections again; and i certainly noticed that my concentration and memory were better without me having to strain. now in my 3rd week, though i feel confident that my stubborn topsy-turvey sleep pattern has been broken and im feeling sleepy at the right times, the difficulty falling asleep is creeping back. (it may actually be my fault as i forced myself to stay up and finish a book several nights into the second week...)

anyway, i know my insomnia is really chronic and longterm, so hope this might help alleviate yours, and that of any other heavy sufferers :)"

05/08/2010: Ravi S from Dallas, Texas, United States replies: "Please try certain yogasanas (pl do google video search - yoga for insomnia). I have tried and I am addicted to that now. It is giving me good results.

Good Luck,

05/09/2010: Francisca from Michelbach-le-bas, Alsace, France replies: "Lightawake, reading a bit before going to sleep or when I wake up too early always helps me go back to sleep very fast.

You say that now you know that your insomnia is chronic and longterm but the difficulty in finding a solution shouldn't prevent you from going on searching. I have had bad allergies for most of my life, not at 52 I am living without medicines and although not completely allergy free the symptoms are very minor and easy to live with. What I want to say to you is this: don't give up trying, you never know when you will find the answer! It might be around the corner and you might just miss it!"
05/09/2010: Gean from Salina, Ks replies: "I have heard a natural doctor say that 95% of all insomnia is caused by toxic liver. I suspect this is true, since the times when I have gotten insomnia is when I do a cleanse, when a lot of toxins are released into my bloodstream. But then I sleep very well after that. The best things I can recommend for cleansing the blood and liver (besides healthy whole food diet and plenty of water and exercise; no sugar or caffeine) is a whole beet sliced and blended with water, drink this and then eat 4 asparagus spears raw, then a whole carrot. I don't eat an apple since I usually eat one for breakfast. Also, blend dandelion plant, roots and all (make sure they're not sprayed) with water. Drink. The insomnia will get worse at first. You can start with 1/4 beet and work your way up. By the way, whenever depression starts up, a day or two of the beet protocol and it goes away. I believe insomnia and depression are both due to toxic liver."

2. Else, try oil pulling an hour before bed-time using coconut oil. This gives deep sleep.
3. Or drink a tablespoon of extra virgin coconut oil an hour before lunch (yes, dont drink close to night, as it will give too much energy and keep you awake.)...at night you will get good sleep.
4. Have some starch in your dinner (eg. boiled potatoes for dinner or late night snacking), it will give deep sleep.
5. Dont go to bed on an empty stomach, the hunger will keep you wide awake. Dont go the bed with a loaded stomach, it will keep you awake and uneasy. Have a moderate dinner.
6. Examine your diet and see if you have added any foods/supplements that are energy giving (eg. coconut oil, turmeric, tea, coffee); if you are consuming these in the evening/night then they will energize you and keep you awake. Shift such foods to morning/early afternoon times, dont consume in the evening/night."

My teacher was an acupuncturist, and he taught us that massaging the feet at bedtime will bring all the extra energy (chi) from your head down to your feet, allowing your mind to be clear and sleep can come easily. Start at the heel and stroke towards your toes on the bottom of the foot. Do this at least 25 times each foot. Just a gentle rub, you don't have to use a lot of pressure.

Best of luck to you, I know insomnia can be very troublesome!

And after taking sea salt for the past one week I never have trouble in sleeping. Salt should be unrefined to be effective. One other thing I have included and that is oil pulling with mustard oil. It stings a little but in ayurveda mustard oil is highly placed for improving dental and gum problems with a pinch of salt and turmeric. But I do not add turmeric to my oil pulling. Every day before sleeping I take a pinch of sea salt and then water. You can also take it by dissolving in water. And it also reduced my cramps and painful joint condition. I have tried many things like acv, omega 3, wheatgrass etc but sea salt made the effect very quickly.

Earlier I was doing oil pulling with sunflower oil. I have also included green smoothies in my diet and also apply urine on my face and my face glows now. I was always weak and my face never glowed but these things have made the difference."

[YEA]  05/13/2009: Cal from Calgary, AB writes: "I was having problems falling asleep at one point and I resorted to all kinds of things even drinking alcohol, working out hard in the day so I would be exhausted but still wouldn't fall asleep but somehow (don't know how and why) it stopped and I was able to fall asleep. Then I would fall asleep fine but around 2am I would just awake sometimes for no reason sometimes to pee and I would hardly be able to fall asleep again. This happened for months. My eyes would just open and I would like there for hours trying to fall asleep again and no matter what I did it just won't happen. I even got eyebags due to lack of sleep now I want to get rid of them. I had gone to a health store and bought some sea salt - one without preservatives or additives and just sun and wind dried. Somewhere I had read something about sea salt but didn't quite remember what so I decided to try it. Add some to my drinking water and lo and behold that solved the problem. Another thing is I could only fall asleep on my left side so I started developing pain in my left shoulder and I could only sleep in that position. I couldn't sleep on my back or right side or belly but since drinking the sea salts I sleep on my back or right side like a baby. Sometimes i even sleep all through the night and even if I wake up to pee I will fall asleep again. I am sooooo happy. Hope this helps someone. I still take it daily or almost daily by adding about a little to about 1 liter of water - enough to taste it but not be salty. I think I was missing some minerals which the salts provided"

[YEA]  08/09/2007: Barb from Seattle, USA writes: "I have insomnia related to stress and physical pain. Magnesium helps somewhat. Kava has helped. Unfortunately, benadril is what gave the most relief the past few months. But I seem to be able to take less benadril by using a liquid tincture of the herb skullcap. I use one dropperful before a warm tub each night, then go to bed. I have used melatonin but it gave me bad dreams. I will continue to experiment and keep you informed if I touch on anything else worth mentioning."

SLEEP MASK

[YEA]  03/22/2006: Leslie from Toronto, Canada writes: "I tend to forget to wear it, but a few yrs back my friend got me a sleep mask for my eyes. Whenever I wear this mask, I have the DEEPEST sleeps and most vivid dreams. Without the mask, it usually takes me ages to fall asleep, and even when I do, I'm always waking up. I suggest these masks to anyone who has trouble staying asleep. My only concern is that it does such a good job at keeping my eyes in darkness, that I've rolled right off the bed a couple times when waking up, because I'm disoriented and don't realize where I am on the bed. A small price to pay though for some needed sleep!"

SLEEP POINTING NORTH IN ABSOLUTE DARKNESS

[YEA]  02/07/2006: Ricardo from CA writes: "Total darkness allows the iris of the eye to completely relax. Eyes are the only place your nervous system is exposed to the world directly. If you are resting in a partially darkened room, cup your palms over your eyes for a while until it seems totally black. Remove your palms and keep your eyes closed. You will perceive some light or lessening of the black through your eyelids. Closing your eyes to sleep, in any illumination, does not allow complete relaxation. Always use a sleep mask or soft cap pulled over your eyes, doubled if needed, and test with palms over mask to be absolutely sure of total darkness."

[YEA]  08/01/2005: Brad from Wisconsin writes: "Sleeping with your head pointing North can improve the quality of your sleep. Also sleeping in absolute total darkness(no alarm clock lights, no light from the door jam) can have a huge impact on your over all health. It will allow more melatonin release by your body and for a longer period of time during the night, which is vital to living longer and healthier. This kind of sleep quality lifts your levels of attention, energy and motivation, awareness and helps keeping aging down to a minimum."

SOURSOP TEA

01/15/2012: Jacqui from Scottsville, Ky Usa writes: "I have a British Facebook friend who lives in the Carribean. I was telling her I have a lot of trouble going to sleep at night, and I wake up completely exhausted, this friend told me they use Soursop tea, and this will make me very sleepy. I looked up the Net about it, and this Soursop seems to be quite a remarkable tree, the fruits are used to eat with icecream etc, the leaves are for making Soursop tea.

This Soursop sounds quite an amazing tree. I was wondering if any of your readers can tell me more about it, and if it can be bought in USA, I would definitely want to know the soarce of where the Soursop came from too. I read where Amazon sell the dried tea cost around $7.. But some woman had left a review of her disappointment not on what the product can do for our health, but she said of the way it was packed etc, I mean, how would we know it was the real thing. If there was anyone out there who could help me find some leaves I can purchase online from a reputable soarce, I would appreciate please. I am a New Zealander living in Kentucky USA

Thank you, Regards Jacqui
