I have been reading your site about OP and the results some have had. I have only been doing for 2 days after having had a viral infection now for weeks which seemed to have pretty much gone but now i'm feeling back to how I was when it was at it's worst almost! I have also not smoked in the past 2 weeks and am bringing up quite a bit of grose phlem all of the sudden, have a slightly heavy chest and am blowing my nose more regularly also. Is this a normal recation to the oil pulling does anyone know? I have stopped and have not continued with the practise. Thanks for any help you can give on this matter!

Sounds like your body is detoxing. Have you read up on Herx reactions? I think people are supposed to take more vitamin C when they are going through a detox like that. Oh, and drink lots of water too. Hope this helps. Tess

You need to keep doing it so that you will complete the detox. I started oil pulling a year ago and I also coughed up some ugly thick crud. But my thyroid is back to normal and I can swallow dry food again. My vision is clearer and I do not have dry skin anymore. You are just going through the healing process. Also change your oils frequently. I change mine monthly so that I get the best detox. I use sunflower oil and coconut oil from the pharmacy.

Both of the above are correct. Please remember that you quit smoking and this will bring up additional detoxing as well. Please continue the oil pulling.

To the person coughing up phlem etc after performing OP. It is quite natural for this to happen because OP causes you to detox. It is not a bad thing but a good thing. People must realize when you do this and obtain a "detox" result, it is working. How can you expect to "detox without detoxing?"

My partner recently had immense toothache pain. One of his upper teeth had broken away revealing a large cavity, and the two bottom ones, had small black flecks on them - obviously needing fillings. He had seen me doing oil pulling on a regular basis, and although happy with my results, I don't think he thought it was for him. He was writhing around in pain, couldn't sleep and pain killers would not work. The earliest dental appointment was a week away. I finally convinced him to do oil pulling. To be honest, I wasn't sure it would work, as I thought perhaps his tooth was too far gone to be be saved, but he did it every morning for around 5 days. The pain completely disappeared in all teeth. He is now a big believer and is recommending it to all his clients. Thanks for a wonderful site.

PS-to the message i just sent-Forgot to mention the oil I used was "100% expeller pressed Sesame". I did also notice cleaner teeth but wondering if that is because of the brushing teeth with baking soda afterwords and extra mouth hygiene in general?

If you are brushing your teeth more than normally, and of course, the baking soda, this, no doubt, has had a positive contribution.

However, many of the things that stain our teeth (tobacco, tea, coffee, chocolate, wine/dark beer, oral bacteria) are not that easily removed with brushing, even with super-duper whitening toothpaste. Oil removes oil, as well as tars and plaque/tartar. The right oil will not only cleanse, but leave a minute protective layer that helps prevent further staining -- that is if you're not brushing with baking soda.

Substitute one or both of your brushings with castille soap (it does not taste bad at all, and if you get one with lavender, actually quite pleasant) and rinse with a little salt water (sea or kosher). I only brush with baking soda just before bedtime.

I use a little sesame (can't stand the taste) mixed with a little safflower or sunflower oil, and occasionally a little coconut oil. While it is always preferable to get the best one can, I, and the other people I know who dabble in oil pulling, have very little disposable income, and we just get the best oils we can off supermarket shelves -- no adverse effects, and many positive results.

Just one little word of caution -- many people actually start feeling under the weather to varying degrees a few days into an oil pulling regimen. This is part of the detoxification process, and how long a person's malaise will last depends on the level of toxins in their body.

Definitely use clove oil or mix yourself up some Thieves, recipe here:
Equal Parts Clove, Cinnamon, Eucalyptus Radiata, Rosemary, Lemon.
I use a little more cinnamon as I love the taste. Oils from Young Living or Ananda Apothecary. You can get YL oils cheaper using this number 342614. Also, PainBomb on the jawbone over pain. www.PainBomb.com
All the Best,

Oil Pulling. I've been Oil Pulling since December 2007. I started because of dry eyes. I can't say that it helped my dry eyes but some of the benefits are truly amazing, in my case.

I've worn nail polish most of my adult life and, therefore, have yellow nails. After oil pulling for several months, the yellow disappeared. Now that's amazing. Additionally, without prompting, my dental hygienest asked if I was doing anything different. She said I know you drink red wine but you hardly have any stains whatsoever. I go every 6 months for cleanings. I also believe the dark circles under my eyes are much less noticeable. No one ever says... "you look tired." like they did before.

Lastly, to those of you who have asthma, I did too for about 15 years. Chiropractic fixed that. I had an x-ray which showed an old back fracture and my alignment was terrible. After about 9 months of treatment several times a week, I decided to stop my daily inhaler. Very nervous doing so. CURED. Chiropractic cured me. That's all I can say.

Hope this helps.

This is just a wonderful website - I have learned of many natural remedies that work wonders for all sorts of ailments. Oil pulling is a technique that I haven't heard of before, but am going to give it a try - it sounds like it's good for a number of things. This last week I've experienced severe acne (out of the blue) and am hoping this combined with other antidotes will help clear up my skin. Will be posting updates about my experience with oil pulling...

Yea: I was suffering from intense sinus head ache pain from a prolonged sinus infection. I read about oil pulling and tried it twice the first day I felt better that day. The next day I felt like a million bucks. I had been suffering with this for two weeks. I couldn't believe how quick this worked for me. I had tried antibiotics, the netty pot,and decongestants but they did not relieve the symptoms. It is now the third day and I still feel better. I can smell again.YEA! I will continue oil pulling once in the morning.

To Abby re oil swishing:

just want to make sure that you are actually spitting the oil out completely afterwards; the dirrrahea sounds like you may be ingesting some of it and the whole point is the oil collects toxins from the mouth that we can then remove quickly. I've only been doing it for about a week but the oral hygenist will be fascinated to see in 6 months time to see if it has cut down on plague buildup.

Hi Abby from Chicago, I had a similar detox-type reaction when I began to OP. I had a constant severe headache, persistent nausea and real difficulty eating. These symptoms became more severe over a period of about a week and I wondered was I doing the right thing in persisting with OP. Similar to yourself I had an upcoming family event so quit OP, and the symptoms disappeared.

However I re-started OP about a month later and have been doing it daily for the last 6 months. My teeth are whiter and feel less sensitive when chewing hard food such as muesli, and my oral health is generally better.

It is also the middle of winter here in Ireland and I have been less affected by colds than most years, with the last cold clearing up without needing a trip to the doc. My sinuses, which have given trouble over the last few winters have also not bothered me this winter. I have also had a number of people remark on my healthy looking complexion and have even asked if I have been away on vacation - strange because I'm normally milk-bottle white in winter!

One of the reasons I started OP was to see if it would cure the keratosis pilaris on my upper arms. Although I can't yet say as I am still using my last dose of prescription cream, the condition seems to have improved over the results I saw using the cream alone. The real test will be when I stop using this tube of cream!

What I would suggest is giving OP another go and see if you experience the same symptoms - all I can say is that I didn't.
Best of luck

Headaches are often caused by a food allergy. You might try using Sunflower oil and see if you have better results. Good luck!

I was fortunate to find out about Dr Karach's oil pulling therapy over 16 years ago, and my objective was to improve my immune system, as a preventative. And it certainly has done so, for example, the number of colds has gone down a lot. Plus, my digestion has improved very much. Also, I can go on for more hours without feeling the need to eat.

I mostly use sesame oil, peanut oil, and sunflower oil: Once per day, one table spoon in the morning, before breakfast, 5-7 days a week. I have found that it's very important to rinse the oral cavity and tonge with baking soda/salt in warm water, and brush all of the same area - including the tongue, after applying just a little baking soda and salt on the toothbrush.

Basically, my opinion is that oil pulling is one of the very best ways to stimulate the body's natural healing abilities, and that includes detoxification. 15-20 minutes in the morning of oil pulling regularly, while taking a shower or shaving or ... - is one of the wisest things we could to, healthwise.

Why would you add salt to baking soda, it already contains alot of sodium.

General Feedback
Posted by Knute (Sacramento, USA) on 08/30/2008

Why add salt, well it's per the instructions of Dr Karach. Also, note, that we are to spit out the salt and the baking soda, so the purpose of it is not to be assimilated by the body. According to Dr Karach, ..., having spit out the liquid from the mouth, now it's time to rinse the oral cavity.

Add 1/2 teaspoon of salt and 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda to a cup of warm, pure water. With this solution rinse your mouth a few times. Then add a little salt and baking soda directly to your toothbrush and carefully brush your teeth, gums and tongue - even under the tongue. Then gargle with the water that had some salt and baking soda added to it. Leave just a little of this water left in the cup, and add a little cool, pure water to it. The purpose is to dilute its strength.

Then tip the cup under your nose and gently "sniff up" the water to cleanse your nasal passages. Blow your nose gently...

I found your site in June of 2007 because I allowed a dentist to talk me into repairing a chipped tooth, he even claimed he wouldn't do any drilling. But he lied & drilled so deep into my gums a nerve was damaged. I was in non stop pain from the time I left his office dispite the novacane, which got worst after it wore off. I could not sleep & cried every night for a month, almost going to the emergency room but determined not to go back to him and fearful of dentists. After searching the net I tried your herbal remedies for the pain and started oil pulling. And within a few days the pain was gone and the only thing I did to maintain it was the oil pulling. I continued it for about 9 mos and felt the tooth must have healed by then so I stopped oil pulling and about two months later the pain returned but there was swelling this time and I was told I must definately get a root canal asap. Instead I started oil pulling again along with ACV and the swelling went away and the pain stopped again. I also recently found a great book about healing cavities and tooth infections called Cure Tooth Decay by Ramiel Nagel. He has a website I believe is www.curetoothdecay.com. He advises what foods to eat to recover from cavites and pressure tecniques to restore the bodies hormonal balance which I barely tried but was amazed that they seem to work right away and I felt a difference. That tooth is now almost 100%. No sensitivity to hot or cold & I can chew any kind of foods no matter how hard, & the tooth no longer feels weeaker than the others. Unlike before when I had to chew certain foods like steak or nuts on the other side of my mouth.

Thank you for this information. I have been very foolish. I have not been to a dentist since 1990, when I lost the health insurance I'd been using until that time. I have had health/dental insurance for the last 7 or 8 years (through my employer), but my head has been in the sand, because I've been afraid to learn that the dentist will want to pull all my teeth. So that's over 20 years of no professional dental care (yes, I know that's crazy).

I just started oil pulling with Organic Coconut Oil 10 days ago, hoping to resolve some serious health issues. I'm not completely confident yet that it will work for me, but I'm continuing. So far, my back teeth have felt much less loose, and their hot/cold sensitivity seems to be reduced. My teeth look really good (I receive regular compliments on my beautiful smile), but of course, I've been worried about their health. I hope that continuing OP will help to save my teeth, now that I'm smart enough to try.

Shemika, just one question: What kind of oil do you use for pulling?

First, I would like to thank the originator for this web-site. I have been oil pulling for about two months and I have an enormous burst of energy after oil pulling. Previously to oil pulling I was having a problem with my left arm. I had gone to the doctor to have it checked, I had a stress test, blood work etc, results were normal. (it felt like I had some type of pulling in my arm). I have not had any problems with it since oil pulling. My teeth are very white. I am also doing Weight Watchers along with my daily pulling I am losing weight when I started WW I was 247lbs, I am now at 237lbs I don't know yet if I can contribute this to oil pulling yet. I only use 1 tsp of safflower oil and swish for 15-20 every morning. Truly thankful for the energy it gives me. It makes me more active.(which was needed). Thank you. Carol

I started oil pulling for 20 minutes in the morning. I didn't always remember to do it and sometimes I would spit it out and forget to drink water afterwards. I also started using a toothpaste with Thieves oil. One day (now a week) I awoke with my mouth and lips inflamed and full of sores, some bleeding. This has been very painful. I can only drink liquid foods and have a hard time talking.

One other thing. I am not an athlete. I went to an athletic camp for a week from 9-11 and became extremely hot with lots of sweating.

I have a sense that I am going through a rough detox. I swish with HP and drink aloe vera juice along with smoothies I make with papaya/banana or beet greens + beet and carrots.

Any thoughts?

To those who have sores/infections after OP: did you follow the directions closely? It says that you are supposed to rinse your mouth and nose out with anti-bacterial solution (salt and/or baking soda). You are also supposed to drink water after OP, and you are supposed to use a naturally anti-bacterial oil like sesame oil. You are basically bringing up all sorts of germs from your system through delicate mucous membranes, and if you don't clean said membranes after OP, expect problems! As for the tooth alignment issues, most likely you had a preexisting condition (maybe deep pockets from poor oral hygiene) and after the OP removed the bacteria your tooth shifted.

One other note: simple toxicological tests indicate that anything put on the gums will flow to the connective tissues around the organs of the body. This can be shown in a lab! So there is the potential for the health of your gums to directly impact your internal organs and visa versa.

I learned about OP from a nurse at my VA. I thought about it and searched the internet for info.
The reason I used it was to remove the bacteria and poisonous toxins I was sure were under my teeth. I also have diabetes and that causes teeth problems. When I started I was in pain from an exposed nerve.

I used 1T seaseme oil and 1T sunflower oil combined w 5 drops black walnut, 5 drops pepperment and 6 drops cinnamon oils. The peppermint for pain and the cinnamon for the antibacterial. Note: oregano as far as I know is an anti-fungal, not an anti-bacterial.
Regardless I swished my mix for 15 min, keep in mind I was in pain at the time. The first effect I noted, there was no pain even when I drew cold air through the area of my mouth. I could eat hot or cold food w no pain. Needless to say I am hooked for life. Teeth that were rising and becoming loose over the next week returned to near normal and tight in the gum. I don't know about the rest of my ailments. My teeth are much better.

A side obsevation I would like to mention is directed to the lady in India who tried OP for her wrist and arm metacarpule. I had metacarpule and the thing I knew that allowed me to over come it is this. The nevre when damaged will swell in its pathway and this is what causes pain when the joint is moved. Nerves continue to swell if they continue to bump bone which causes more pain. The wrist has a very small passage for its nerves. The swelling that causes the pain is closer to the thumb than the elbow (I mean the swell is trapped). The nerve for the thumb and forefinger extends thru the arm up to the armpit. To releive the pain from my wrist I reach up on a door frame as high as I could. Held on to the frame and dropped my body slowly down streaching my arm until it was fully extended way over my head. At first fire was running up my arm but when I reached full extention of my arm I felt a pop in my wrist and all pain vanished. Now I stretch to insure it doesn't happen again.

I hope this can help someone. It worked for me.
